Re: [QUAD-L] Burns
Greg, You might want to get back to your doctor and have him look at it. Sometimes the antibiotic cream prevents healing. I also have burnt myself in many places with heat wrap, hotplate, hot beverages, and accidentally bumping the oven. About a year ago I burnt my finger and the wound wouldn't go away and it became infected. After seeing A GP, a surgeon and then finally an orthopedic surgeon, who cut out the infection twice, it finally healed. Feeling cold and uncomfortable, the warmth is soothing and comforting and I always try to be careful but sometimes it is not enough. Best wishes Dan T. Maybe contacting your manufacturer or someone knowledgeable about the door's and inquire if it is adjustable. I can make a difference and sometimes when you adjust them they resort to their previous difficult condition and need to be adjusted again. Re: [QUAD-L] uti's/mitrofanoff
Jessica, in the last two years I have had 2 UTI's. Prior to that I hadn't had any in a good 10 years. Most UTI's are from bugs that can be found in stool. I read that several years ago and after multiple UTI's every year I became extreme with hygiene. I was always good with hygiene but now I go over-the-top somewhat. It sounds as though you have an infection. If you are running a fever contact your doctor, Go to a quick care clinic or go to the emergency room. Don't let it get out of control. Re: [QUAD-L] Quads and Hospitals that almost killed me!
Darrick, I experienced a similar situation. In 2005 I was experiencing extreme spasticity and my blood pressure was 230/130 and I ended up in the ER where they gave me two doses of morphine and other meds of which I am not sure. It turns out I had a UTI and was admitted. Later that night the nurse could not get a blood pressure on me and couldn't initially wake me up. I don't remember what my BP was what it was but it low and I ended up in intensive care for several days and I had one nurse their from hell but that is another story. It's wise to learn your injury and advocate for yourself medically. Hypereflexia can cause stroke or death. Glad it wasn't our turn Derrick. Dan T. I was to stay overnight because they were to put packing in my rectum to stop any bleeding. Well when I awoke from the sugery and ate something, my blood pressure(bp) spiked to 190 over 130. it usually is around 90 over 70. I showed the nurse the papers about AD and told her that I wanted to see a doctor. I told her to take the packing out and see if the blood pressure would drop. This was around 4pm. She called the doctor and he told her to put me on pills every 15 minutes and IV'ed another blood pressure medications every 1/2 hour. Plus they gave me morphine and other pain meds for my headache. Well, this went on untill 9 pm. My b.p. finally lowered. An emergency room doc showed up at 9:30pm. [5.5 hours later] He asked, Why did I think I needed a doctor. I told him about AD and sked him if he ever treated it before. He said yes and that is all i remember because i was so drugged up. So, around 10pm, i felt funny and i asked the nurse to check my bp. She did and it was 60 over 30. So, they put me on drugs to raise my bp. Around 2:30am, my bp was around normal. They never removed the packing until sometime after this. Then my bp stayed normal and I went home at 11am. There is alot more to the story that blows me away on how healthcare officials do not listen to their patients and they think they know it all. I had the systoms and causes in black and white. Wow! Please let me know of any good website links to info about AD. I am making it a mission that this does not happen to anyone else. Re: [QUAD-L] Vacations
Most of my better vacation memories involve short trips from one to three days. Day trips to Chicago are enjoyable and usually involve less hassles than if I stay overnight. I also have enjoyed 2-4 day trips to door county Wisconsin and Michigan along its Lake Michigan shoreline. Traveling by plane has always been a hassle as my chair has been abused as the personnel don't always know what they're supposed to when it comes to disabled travelers and their wheelchairs. As a quad, all the transferring is a pain especially if you have to change planes or deplane because of mechanical problems. I was actually planning on traveling to Italy this past year with several family members who could assist with transferring, luggage, driving etc. but I had to cancel because of a pressure sore. I've been doing this for over twenty years and I've found students are by far much more honest and dependable than the people you might get from an ad in your local paper. Also, be very suspicious of people that want to help you out! I was told this by my assessment person years ago and it is so true. People that say they want to help you out are doing so to make them feel better about THEMSELVES. THEY are the ones that don't stay around very long. Once they feel better about themselves they'll drop you like a hot potato. They feel they've done their share. The person(s) that will usually stick is the one(s) who really needs the money. If at all possible, meet someplace other than your home. Mostly for safety reasons - you might not want some of the people you'll interview to know exactly where you live ;). If you like them and visa-versa, have another interview at your home. Hire more than one as you'll need people to cover for each other. Once you hire them it will take awhile for them to get things right but remember - praise, praise, praise. Even if they are doing things backwards and upside down at first. Find something to make them feel good about the job and themselves. Gee, you're doing great! You did that like a pro, etc. People love please and thank you. I've found you can't say it enough. And above all, have a sense of humor! Dan V At 05:26 PM 2/2/2007 -0500, Les said something that elicited my response: Hi Everybody, I have a question for the group. Background info: Currently my dad is doing all my care. Getting me dressed, transferred out of bed (surehands lift) and getting ready for work. Comes to my work place and feeds me lunch. Then after work helps with anything I need, then puts me to bed and all that stuff around 10pm. Well I know I can rely on my dad forever, he is getting older (around 70ish). So I need to start the process of getting attendant care. What advice would you guys recommend? Lester C4-5 Quad
Re: [QUAD-L] How Do You Read Books?
You might try a mouthstick to turn the pages on your book stand but that has pitfalls also. A company also makes an automatic page turner but I have not had experience with it. The library of congress has a program of books on tapes but it is antiquated as they are updating their technology and trying pilot programs. My local library has started offering books that you can download on the Web. Its catalog could be better but it gives me more options. Check with your library. I recently completed Shadow Divers my robertkurson and enjoyed it very much. It is a true story is about a German U-boat laying off the coast of New Jersey. Have you read anything good lately? Dan T. This is really driving me crazy, especially since there are so many things I need to read. I would like to know how anyone else manage to read a book. For novels, I get books on tape, if they're available, but some things I need to read, do not come on a tape. I would appreciate any suggestions. Naomi

I'd appreciate if you could give it once again. I was told to start taking a Metamucil by my doctor quite some time ago in order to make sure that I kept regular and so the stool would maintain a certain consistency. I occasionally have problems with loose stool and then inexplicably go to constipation without any change in diet. I have found over the last two years that I have had to do my bowel program every other day, as I was getting too much discomfort (it actually felt like I needed to go all of the time). After consulting a dietitian, she told me based on my food diary that I was getting too much fiber and this was stimulating my bowels to move as if they were getting ready to void. Now I have to watch how often I eat my garden burgers/sausages/chicken substitute and how much other fiber I take in. If I can replace Metamucil with other fiber, that would be fine by me. It would be really great if I could eat my garden accessories and a ton of salad everyday without discomfort. I am just curious to hear what everyone on here thinks about this. Well, perhaps not everyone. :-) Quadius [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Metamucil is designed to make you go, I do not have that problem. Re: [QUAD-L] UTI Prevention Van Insurence
Maybe the UTI was fostered by the yogurt. Sometimes food rich in calcium or minerals are deposited in the urine and slowdown draining of urine. The slowdown could in turn foster UTI. I have read that most UTIs are caused from a bug in our stool. I had always been extremely careful getting cleaned off after bowel care and accidents but then when I learned that most UTIs are caused by bug in stool I became extreme, somewhat over-the-top about cleanliness. It helped. Changing sheets and washing more frequently might help. Dan T. That can't be even close...right? It will cost over $1200 just for hand controls alone. My van itself was $14,000 in 2000 and is now valued about $8,5000. Does anyone know how insurance companies deal with putting a value to handicap modifications? I think my next vehicle will probably be a car untill I can make the payments on a newer minivan. I haven't done it yet, but I have met 2 quads around my level C6-7 or so who did it. They would get in the passenger side of the car, take the wheels off the chair, and pull everything in after them, sliding over to the drivers side. I'd have to get the quad release wheels. What I really need though is just a whole new damn chair and I might try to push for this, but that's really hard. My insurance paid for a new motorized chair a few years ago. Surprisingly, here in Reno, we only have two medical suppliers. For an area that has 300,000 people that seems to be somewhat low. The one company is very difficult to deal with, and in the past have taken my chair in on an appointment to be tested, and didn't even get around to looking at it for five working days! I will check with Wayne the other medical supplier, and see if I can try a Roho for a few days. Good idea, thank you very much. I love my Sony Ericsson 600 I. It has some drawbacks, but so does all voice-activated equipment. Over the 16 months I have had it, I have discovered some little tricks to make it work better. If I'm going to be in a noisy environment, I call a friend or family member to call me and then I don't answer. For some reason, if I have a missed call I cannot dial out. When I'm going to move out of the noisy environment, I just have somebody press the missed call and then press no, and I'm back in business. I have gotten rid of most of the mistakes in dialing out, when I didn't mean to, I moving many of my voice activated calls to voice connect at Cingular. Then I just tell it to dial voice connect and then make my calls through voice connect. I only have six or seven people on my voice activation cell phone, and if I miss dial any of those, well, they are friends and family and I can talk to them any time. Now if I can just learn how to effectively use DragonDictate, I'll be in seventh heaven! I may never find it. I often look in my full-length mirror to check the cushion. I understand your worry of the issue. I am using a Hoyer lift on wheels to get up into my chair and am having trouble getting back far enough in the chair. Is this problem eliminated with a ceiling mounted lift system? or is it still difficult to get far back into the chair with a ceiling lift because of the sling? Thanks, Dan T.

Re: [QUAD-L] Balloons
I have an indwelling catheter and have reduced the inflation of the balloon to 5 cc on my own initiative. When I mentioned it to my urologist he said that any one that cannot tolerate the 10 CC's shouldn't have an indwelling catheter. I have kept using the five CC's for several years and can't quite figure out his argument. I have had the indwelling catheter for 30 years and had various problems including significant bladder spasms which have been a source of hypereflexia and even caused hospitalizations. I have been taking a double dose anti-spasticity medication for the bladder under my doctors orders. He has said it is a matter of time until the medication is no longer effective and then I will need some type of surgery. I have been juggling medications for several years to avoid and prevent the surgery. How is the smaller balloon working for you? Best of luck... Dan T. B. Re: [QUAD-L] My first Bladder Stone ;-(
Danny, sorry to hear about your problems. When I have had my stones my urologist was able to go into the bladder by way of urethra and break up the stones into smaller pieces to pass through the catheter. It's hard to believe that it is the size of a golf ball. It would probably be a good idea to talk to your doctor about prophylactic antibiotics and hypereflexia symptoms during and after the procedure. Get it taken care of ASAP you don't want bigger problems. What hospital where you at ? best of luck, keep us posted... Dan T. David K. Kelmer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Hi Danny, Sorry to hear about the stone. I don't think they need to make an incision to remove it unless it is too hard to break-down. Here is some good info on them. Bladder stones Introduction Bladder stones are small masses of minerals that form in your bladder, the balloon-shaped organ in your pelvis that stores urine. Bladder stones, also called bladder calculi, often form when concentrated urine sits in your bladder. As urine stagnates, minerals in the urine form various crystals that may combine to form stones. Bladder stones usually develop secondary to another condition, such as an enlarged prostate or a urinary tract infection. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/bladder-stones/DS00904/DSECTION=1 Treatment Bladder stones usually need to be removed. If the stone is small, your doctor may recommend that you drink an increased amount of water each day to help the stone pass. If the stone is large or doesn't pass on its own, your doctor may need to remove the stone. Bladder stones are usually removed during a procedure called a cystolitholapaxy. During this procedure, your doctor inserts a small tube with a camera at the end (cystoscope) through your urethra and into your bladder to view the stone. Your doctor uses a laser, ultrasound or mechanical device to break the stone into small pieces and then flushes the pieces from your bladder. You'll likely have regional or general anesthesia prior to the procedure to make you comfortable. Complications from a cystolitholapaxy aren't common, but urinary tract infections, fever, a tear in your bladder and bleeding can occur. Your doctor may give you antibiotics before the procedure to reduce the risk of infections. About a month after the cystolitholapaxy, your doctor will likely check to make sure that no stone fragments remain in your bladder. Occasionally, bladder stones that are large or too hard to fragment are removed through open surgery. In these cases, your doctor makes an incision in your bladder and directly removes the stones. Any underlying condition causing the stones, such as an enlarged prostate, may be corrected at the same time the stones are removed. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/bladder-stones/DS00904/DSECTION=8 I hope this helps. Re: [QUAD-L] Environmental Control Units (mattress)
Dana, is the item you had mentioned to check the Roho a mapping device? In the seating clinic at the rehabilitation Institute of Chicago they have a mapping pad. A person sits on the device and the computer gives you a readout of where the most and least pressure is. It's not foolproof. My generator cost 4500 it is a Generac and it automatically starts up with a power outage and turns off when the power comes back on. That is what I am using for backup for my mattress. My mattress will go flat in a matter of minutes without power. When this previously happened I used to get out of bed as soon as I could as I was laying on metal. What kind of generator are you using Dan and the price? How do you make it automatically begin when there is power outage. What kind of backup do you use if the mattress loses current or just fails to work? We would not know if it lost air just like the Roho. I still will use water bed, because I don't need turned that often and in my air bet I was told I would need to be turned every few hours. I don't know the name of it either. Re: [QUAD-L] Environmental Control Units
Relax, you'll do fine. I'm 30 years post c 4-5 and still have a lot to learn myself. Where did you do your rehab? Dan in Illinois LTeasley [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, my name is Belle. I'm fairly new here, I've only posted a couple of times before. I am a C4--5 as a result of a motor vehicle accident. I am only 18 months out, so I realize I'm really new at this. But boy I sure feel like I have a lot to learn. I know what an environmental control unit is, but as far as the UPS, and other initials and such that are being used I have no clue how to follow them. Can anyone help me? By the way, I came to know of this site through Steve Oldaker; he is friends/acquaintances with my father's cousin. I am very grateful for the connection. Thanks, LJ Belle [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I sure feel silly. When power goes off here I have a flashlight I can shake and radio/cd player. When things get bad, I have a 1000 watt power inverter for the wheelchair batteries to operate my bed and whatever else. (I know it doesn't add life to my batteries.) I try to be positive and name the mice that are wondering What did I do this time? john -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: quad-list@eskimo.com Sent: Sat, 13 Jan 2007 7:57 PM Subject: Re: [QUAD-L] Environmental Control Units .AOLPlainTextBody { FONT-SIZE: 12px; MARGIN: 0px; COLOR: #000; FONT-FAMILY: Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Sans-Serif; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff } .AOLPlainTextBody PRE { FONT-SIZE: 9pt } .AOLInlineAttachment { MARGIN: 10px } .AOLAttachmentHeader { BORDER-RIGHT: #7da8d4 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #7da8d4 1px solid; BACKGROUND: #f9f9f9; FONT: 11px arial; BORDER-LEFT: #7da8d4 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #7da8d4 1px solid } .AOLAttachmentHeader .Title { PADDING-RIGHT: 3px; PADDING-LEFT: 3px; BACKGROUND: #b5ddfa; PADDING-BOTTOM: 3px; FONT: 11px arial; PADDING-TOP: 3px } .AOLAttachmentHeader .FieldLabel { PADDING-RIGHT: 10px; PADDING-LEFT: 9px; BACKGROUND: #f9f9f9; PADDING-BOTTOM: 1px; FONT: 11px arial; COLOR: #00; PADDING-TOP: 1px } .AOLAttachmentHeader .FieldValue { BACKGROUND: #f9f9f9; FONT: 11px arial; COLOR: #00 } .AOLAttachmentHeader A { COLOR: #2864b4; TEXT-DECORATION: none } .AOLImage A { COLOR: #2864b4; TEXT-DECORATION: none } .AOLAttachmentHeader A:hover { COLOR: #2864b4; TEXT-DECORATION: underline } .AOLImage A:hover { COLOR: #2864b4; TEXT-DECORATION: underline } BODY { BORDER-RIGHT: 0px; BORDER-TOP: 0px; FONT-SIZE: 10pt; BORDER-LEFT: 0px; BORDER-BOTTOM: 0px; FONT-FAMILY: Verdana; BACKGROUND-COLOR: white } P { PADDING-RIGHT: 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 0px; PADDING-BOTTOM: 0px; MARGIN: 0px; PADDING-TOP: 0px } IMG.managedImg { WIDTH: 0px; HEIGHT: 0px } IMG.placeholder { BORDER-RIGHT: #dadad6 1px solid; BORDER-TOP: #dadad6 1px solid; BACKGROUND: #f4f4f4 no-repeat center center; BORDER-LEFT: #dadad6 1px solid; WIDTH: 275px; BORDER-BOTTOM: #dadad6 1px solid; HEIGHT: 206px } Yes, it has the automatic lock off control.
