Re: [QUAD-L] Burns

2007-03-13 Thread Dan Tessiatore
Greg, You might want to get back to your doctor and have him look at it.
Sometimes the antibiotic cream prevents healing.
I also have burnt myself in many places with heat wrap, hotplate, hot
beverages, and accidentally bumping the oven. About a year ago I burnt my
finger and the wound wouldn't go away and it became infected. After seeing A
GP, a surgeon and then finally an orthopedic surgeon, who cut out the infection
twice, it finally healed.
Feeling cold and uncomfortable, the warmth is soothing and comforting and I
always try to be careful but sometimes it is not enough. Best wishes Dan T.

[QUAD-L] SEATING SOLUTION

Bobby, sorry to hear about your friend. Is she enrolled in any of the Medicare
drug programs? At last resort she could make herself eligible for Medicaid.
Did they give her any idea of her prognosis? Ideally it would be good if she
could have an oncologist and a physician specializing in pain management.
Your friendship and assistance to her is the most valuable thing you can give
her. Best regards, Dan T both of you are in my prayers

 Hi Dan.

I purchased the carrier sling that they carry. It is well made, will work
quite well, and their delivery time was very quick. It is almost exactly like
the sling I have for my barrier free lift, but is made of sturdier material and
with handles at the appropriate place. I am going to try to find out more about
their assisted hand device. It would be so fantastic be able to give myself a
drink, let alone be able to feed myself :-) :-) :-).

What is it that you're looking at? That is, if you don't mind my being nosy.

To learn what is possible for myself, I watch and speak to as many
quadriplegics how they live, particularly on a low budget paying to get in and
out of bed at that. After rehab when I was first injured, the hospital nor I
knew what to do with me. My family lived 2,000 miles away in Milwaukee.
Moving from California was not at present an option, nor did I want at that

psychologist refused to allow me be discharged to a nursing home. I am forever
thankful to this woman to have given me a standard and the guts to be creative
in how I live. I know nursing facilities are necessary to perhaps most people
at one time or another, so any person at home in such a facility I mean no
disrespect. Contrary, what you have to do, or found, ya have to d! o it.

My solution was to run an ad in the domestic colomn in a newspaper in an area I
desired to live. The ad read something like, 38 year old quadriplegic
looking to live with caregiver. Offering (at that time $1,300.) A woman with
two old enough to work daughters, CNAs themselves were my best choice. As a
new C/5 injury I pretty much broke myself in with my new found injury survival
ways here. This was working out pretty well.

A cousin I had never met started calling me insisting for me to move in with
her in a house she recently bought. After two months of persuasiveness, I felt
if she wanted me bad enough she could have me. So not involving her in my care
outside of meals, could you, would yours, and the sort, I pretty well cut my
teeth on hiring, working with, training, and firing attendants.

The ground rules have changed completely in the last 17 years regarding SCI
and living the life.
17 years ago, most could expect a minimum of 90 days in rehab, while planning
their eternal future in the real woild.

Today, even C4/5 are kicked out after 30 days of uncertainty. Depending on
the type of insurance you have, can also determine how easy or difficult life
can be. Lawsuits often take 5-7 years before you can expect any reasonable
settlements. Support from one's spouse, family and support group, provide some
interesting insight, during those transition periods.

Then you have the natural survivors. They tend to be extremely rare. Give
them a holy blanket and a feathered pillow and they can sleep in a tent on the
side of a mountain, eat grass and drink dirty water and you can only shake your
head at them... and just wonder.

Its never easy and often not pretty, but I too have seen it done. Paul The
Impossible Only Takes A Little Longer Berg, was one of those people. Ed
Father of CIL Roberts, is another. Curtis Superfly Mayfield, Christopher
Reeve, Judith Human and so many others who faced SCI as a quad, and lived the
life.

No, I don't have the answer. But I know its out there for all to seek
and survive.

Jessica, in the last two years I have had 2 UTI's. Prior to that I hadn't had

I read that several years ago and after multiple UTI's every year I became
extreme with hygiene. I was always good with hygiene but now I go over-the-top

UTI's. Also being careful to keep the catheter sterile when changing it.

As long as I stay sitting the shivers do not begin. As long as I continue to
stay in bed supine and flat, the shivering will not start again unless I sit up
for several hours. As directed by several list members I saw a doctor. Urine
and blood tests were negative.

I have taken to sleeping in my chair sitting, or to sleep in bed at 30
degrees or more to avoid the night long ordeal awake shivering uncontrollable
for fours. So, still not to rule out an infection yet, but I am still
requesting ideas or someone else who has done this.

to, but I am often cold when I go to bed and then wake up several hours
later roasting. That's when my fan goes on, and then a while later it will
have to go off. For those of us who are higher quads, just the lack of
ability to move and warm those muscles is a primary reason for the slowness
in our responding to temperatures. I absolutely love my wood stove, and the
fact that it has a glass window makes it even more appealing. For these last
five weeks of bed rest, the thing I miss the most is my wood stove -- of

When I get it, once I get moved a bit it goes away. Most of my AD is bladder

One time I woke up so cold and shivering so bad, I was sure I had a bad UTI. As
soon as I got up I went to the ER. My arm was shivering so bad I was jerking as
I was driving my chair. My temp was at 94 degrees. The ER line was very long so
I went outside to sit in the sun. By the time they called me, I was warming up

raises you blood pressure. It is a dangerous thing.

more problem solving.

I could be dead tired, temperature comfortable, and blood pressure is low.
With-in half an hour I am no longer tired, urine is caught in bag, I am
becoming cold and soon to be shivering, blood pressure raised, and I am wide
awake unable to sleep until morning.

This has so affected my life. Regardless how tired I am, in half an hour I

Darrick, I experienced a similar situation. In 2005 I was experiencing extreme
spasticity and my blood pressure was 230/130 and I ended up in the ER where
they gave me two doses of morphine and other meds of which I am not sure. It
turns out I had a UTI and was admitted. Later that night the nurse could not
get a blood pressure on me and couldn't initially wake me up. I don't remember
what my BP was what it was but it low and I ended up in intensive care for
several days and I had one nurse their from hell but that is another story.
It's wise to learn your injury and advocate for yourself medically.

I printed out 5 pages of info on AD and took it with me to the hospiital
because I knew that dysreflexia would happen.
I was to stay overnight because they were to put packing in my rectum to stop
any bleeding. Well when I awoke from the sugery and ate something, my blood
pressure(bp) spiked to 190 over 130. it usually is around 90 over 70.
I showed the nurse the papers about AD and told her that I wanted to see a
doctor. I told her to take the packing out and see if the blood pressure would
drop. This was around 4pm. She called the doctor and he told her to put me on
pills every 15 minutes and IV'ed another blood pressure medications every 1/2
hour. Plus they gave me morphine and other pain meds for my headache.
Well, this went on untill 9 pm. My b.p. finally lowered. An emergency room doc
showed up at 9:30pm. [5.5 hours later] He asked, Why did I think I needed a
doctor. I told him about AD and sked him if he ever treated it before. He said
yes and that is all i remember because i was so drugged up.
So, around 10pm, i felt funny and i asked the nurse to check my bp. She did
and it was 60 over 30. So, they put me on drugs to raise my bp. Around 2:30am,
my bp was around normal. They never removed the packing until sometime after
this. Then my bp stayed normal and I went home at 11am.

There is alot more to the story that blows me away on how healthcare
officials do not listen to their patients and they think they know it all. I
had the systoms and causes in black and white. Wow!

Please let me know of any good website links to info about AD. I am making it

Re: [QUAD-L] Vacations

2007-02-05 Thread Dan Tessiatore
Most of my better vacation memories involve short trips from one to three days.
Day trips to Chicago are enjoyable and usually involve less hassles than if I
stay overnight. I also have enjoyed 2-4 day trips to door county Wisconsin and
Michigan along its Lake Michigan shoreline. Traveling by plane has always been
a hassle as my chair has been abused as the personnel don't always know what
they're supposed to when it comes to disabled travelers and their wheelchairs.
As a quad, all the transferring is a pain especially if you have to change
planes or deplane because of mechanical problems.
I was actually planning on traveling to Italy this past year with several
family members who could assist with transferring, luggage, driving etc. but I
had to cancel because of a pressure sore. You have to enjoy the good times
where you are and take advantage of what is close by. Dan T.

What are some of the better vacations you guys have had as quads?

All my ideal vacations are to areas not real wheelchair accessible (Old
places like Tuscany, Pyramids, Etc.,) I’m thinking maybe places with beaches,
but again, not too accessible. If I go only to stay in nice hotels in warm
weather, I can just go to a local hotel here in AZ. Though I’ve seen beach
wheelchairs, but not electric ones. I hate long airplane trips, or Hawaii and
the Virgin Islands would sound wonderful. So I think Mexico might be ok if I go
that direction. As long as I stay in the resort area, but if I’m in Mexico, I’d
love to get out into the “real” Mexico.

I think a cruise is kind of a good way to go. By the water, but not have to
worry about the sand. But I hear getting off at the destination ports is not
always easy in an electric chair. But then I’d have to fly to get to a starting
off point.

Try to keep the area from being overly moist as your wound will not heal if to
wet. Naturally, the more you stay off it the quicker it will heal. I had a sore
in a fold of my skin on my behind and finally decided to stay in bed off of it.
It does help. Possibly look into a cushion that would provide relief for that
area. Have you or your caregiver consulted with a wound care specialist? What
are you sitting on? my wound care specialists recommended using a new products
manufactured by Smith and nephew. Using a product called Solosite on the open
wound and covered with a gauze bandage. On the healed areas and at risk areas I
use a product called Extra Protection Cream Hang in there it will heal. Dan T.

Is there any way you can stay out of the chair long enough for the sore to
heal completely? It would seem that spending even a couple of hours let
alone 4-5 hours in the chair daily would undo any healing that is
accomplished when you are not in your chair. I have had periodic skin
trouble for nearly nineteen years of injury and I have never been able to
heal a problem without staying out of the chair. I also keep a small fan
blowing on my groin area any time I am in the bed, sore or otherwise, to
prevent moisture from building up and creating problems.

If you're allowed to hire and train your own PCAs get advertise at the nearest

Also, be very suspicious of people that want to help you out! I was told this
by my assessment person years ago and it is so true. People that say they want
to help you out are doing so to make them feel better about THEMSELVES. THEY
are the ones that don't stay around very long. Once they feel better about

If at all possible, meet someplace other than your home. Mostly for safety

Hire more than one as you'll need people to cover for each other.

Once you hire them it will take awhile for them to get things right but
remember - praise, praise, praise. Even if they are doing things backwards and
upside down at first. Find something to make them feel good about the job and

If I can replace Metamucil with other fiber, that would be fine by me. It

Re: [QUAD-L] UTI Prevention Van Insurence

Maybe the UTI was fostered by the yogurt. Sometimes food rich in calcium or
minerals are deposited in the urine and slowdown draining of urine. The
slowdown could in turn foster UTI. I have read that most UTIs are caused from

I wish I could answer that for you, but when my friend put the system
together, he found that he needed the cobra adapter in order to make it truly
hands-free. I don't know why, but it has worked very well for 15 months. If you
are interested in the same thing, I will get Christian, who is my electronic
guru, to e-mail me the reasons why, and exactly what he had to do. I am most
grateful for all of my voice-activated things, and I am extremely grateful for
Christian who comes and bails me out when my X10 system goes wrong, and
multiple other things. God has certainly put some very valuable helpers in my
walk, so that I can live life to the fullest. Joan

interresting that the one set up can be used for an environmental control

we go on vacation. Using it, I can be carried out into the water for swimming.

My phone system uses the Sony Ericsson 600 I Walkman, a Plantronics Voyager
Bluetooth, and a COBRA adapter from RadioShack. When I purchased it 15 months
ago, the entire set up with a two-year contract with Cingular was $165. I have
had absolutely no problems with it, and as he mentioned in his letter to you
Dana, Cingular is very disability friendly. I have the free voice dial, but did
not know about the free information. I will look into that. I really like my
system better for just a phone, because it is very un-obtrusive. I have a
telephone mounted on a flexible boom, which attaches to my chair, and a wire
that connects the cobra adapter to my chin controller. The Bluetooth is then
wireless of course. As he mentions in his letter, there is a bug with the Sony
Ericsson 600i, which turns off the voice capabilities, if there is a message
waiting. I use that bug all the time. To prevent me from making outgoing calls,
when I am in a very noisy place, I just have somebody
dial my number and do not answer the phone --voila, no mistaken outgoing
calls. I just have somebody click the phone button when I am ready to make
outgoing calls.

I do not use a headrest on my chair so that flexing microphone would not
work for me. Just my opinion, but I do like my system better for just the phone.

I chose this Plantronics Bluetooth, because it is very unobtrusive, and it
stays in my ear, even when I am outside bumping around.

Have a great day. Joan

Peter, I currently use an x 10 system. It is a simple and basic system. The
plug of the appliance you want to control is plugged into a module which is
plugged into your regular outlet than you can control that appliance using a
control box allowing you to shut it off and on. The control box can be
difficult to operate as its buttons are somewhat small and relatively close

  Dan,
Funny, I was going to ask the list if any one watched this show. We watch it
every week. He did agree with the father that he would breakup with the girl
but after he talked with a guy who also is in a chair that was his rehab room
mate told him he should have told the father 'where to go' mocked the f/u
finger which didn't straighten, as we all know :-). So after talking to his
buddy he decided to ask her. The kid was a quarterback who broke his neck
during a game. I think they've been doing a pretty close job portraying him as
a quad from other shows I've watched. You wrote 'para' but he's supposed to be
a quad. The reason I say this is his fingers are curled up (which is why I say
they 're doing okay for portraying him as a quad). But ...anyway, yes, I 've
watched it from the start out of boredom one night I like the show.

Hi Dana.

Surprisingly, here in Reno, we only have two medical suppliers. For an area
that has 300,000 people that seems to be somewhat low. The one company is very
difficult to deal with, and in the past have taken my chair in on an
appointment to be tested, and didn't even get around to looking at it for five
working days! I will check with Wayne the other medical supplier, and see if I
can try a Roho for a few days. Good idea, thank you very much.
I love my Sony Ericsson 600 I. It has some drawbacks, but so does all
voice-activated equipment. Over the 16 months I have had it, I have discovered
some little tricks to make it work better. If I'm going to be in a noisy
environment, I call a friend or family member to call me and then I don't
answer. For some reason, if I have a missed call I cannot dial out. When I'm
going to move out of the noisy environment, I just have somebody press the
missed call and then press no, and I'm back in business. I have gotten rid of
most of the mistakes in dialing out, when I didn't mean to, I moving many of my
voice activated calls to voice connect at Cingular. Then I just tell it to dial
voice connect and then make my calls through voice connect. I only have six or
seven people on my voice activation cell phone, and if I miss dial any of
those, well, they are friends and family and I can talk to them any time. Now
if I can just learn how to effectively use DragonDictate, I'll be in
 seventh heaven! Joan

The air has gone low and I have gotten a view pressure sores, but they were not
large and mostly just red spots and I stayed in bed for a few days and they
were gone. I keep wondering if there's something they may make that would
attach to the cushion to monitor the air pressure as I know someone posted such
a device. No one seems to remember this post except me. I may never find it.
I often look in my full-length mirror to check the cushion. I understand your
worry of the issue. The roho mapped out really good when I was getting a new
chair the last time it was checked.

How is your magic word cell phone working?

  Just my two cents.

Re: [QUAD-L] Balloons

2007-01-22 Thread Dan Tessiatore
I have an indwelling catheter and have reduced the inflation of the balloon to
5 cc on my own initiative. When I mentioned it to my urologist he said that
any one that cannot tolerate the 10 CC's shouldn't have an indwelling catheter.
I have kept using the five CC's for several years and can't quite figure out
his argument.
I have had the indwelling catheter for 30 years and had various problems

Re: [QUAD-L] My first Bladder Stone ;-(

2007-01-19 Thread Dan Tessiatore
Danny, sorry to hear about your problems. When I have had my stones my
urologist was able to go into the bladder by way of urethra and break up the
stones into smaller pieces to pass through the catheter. It's hard to believe
that it is the size of a golf ball.
It would probably be a good idea to talk to your doctor about prophylactic
antibiotics and hypereflexia symptoms during and after the procedure.
Get it taken care of ASAP you don't want bigger problems. What hospital where
you at ?
best of luck, keep us posted... Dan T.

David K. Kelmer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Hi Danny,

Sorry to hear about the stone. I don't think they need to make an incision
to remove it unless it is too hard to break-down. Here is some good info on
them.
Bladder stones Introduction Bladder stones are small masses of minerals
that form in your bladder, the balloon-shaped organ in your pelvis that stores
urine. Bladder stones, also called bladder calculi, often form when
concentrated urine sits in your bladder. As urine stagnates, minerals in the
urine form various crystals that may combine to form stones. Bladder stones
usually develop secondary to another condition, such as an enlarged prostate or
a urinary tract infection.
  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/bladder-stones/DS00904/DSECTION=1
Treatment Bladder stones usually need to be removed. If the stone is small,
your doctor may recommend that you drink an increased amount of water each day
to help the stone pass. If the stone is large or doesn't pass on its own, your
doctor may need to remove the stone.

Bladder stones are usually removed during a procedure called a
cystolitholapaxy. During this procedure, your doctor inserts a small tube with
a camera at the end (cystoscope) through your urethra and into your bladder to
view the stone. Your doctor uses a laser, ultrasound or mechanical device to
break the stone into small pieces and then flushes the pieces from your bladder.

You'll likely have regional or general anesthesia prior to the procedure to
make you comfortable. Complications from a cystolitholapaxy aren't common, but
urinary tract infections, fever, a tear in your bladder and bleeding can occur.
Your doctor may give you antibiotics before the procedure to reduce the risk of
infections. About a month after the cystolitholapaxy, your doctor will likely
check to make sure that no stone fragments remain in your bladder.

Occasionally, bladder stones that are large or too hard to fragment are
removed through open surgery. In these cases, your doctor makes an incision in
your bladder and directly removes the stones. Any underlying condition causing
the stones, such as an enlarged prostate, may be corrected at the same time the
stones are removed.
  http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/bladder-stones/DS00904/DSECTION=8

  I hope this helps.

Re: [QUAD-L] Environmental Control Units (mattress)

2007-01-18 Thread Dan Tessiatore
Dana, is the item you had mentioned to check the Roho a mapping device? In the
seating clinic at the rehabilitation Institute of Chicago they have a mapping
pad. A person sits on the device and the computer gives you a readout of where
the most and least pressure is.
It's not foolproof.
My generator cost 4500 it is a Generac and it automatically starts up with a
power outage and turns off when the power comes back on.
That is what I am using for backup for my mattress. My mattress will go flat
in a matter of minutes without power. When this previously happened I used to
get out of bed as soon as I could as I was laying on metal. Dan

on a computer that I don't have any more.

  Does anybody remember that post?

What kind of generator are you using Dan and the price?
How do you make it automatically begin when there is power outage.
What kind of backup do you use if the mattress loses current or just fails to
work?

We would not know if it lost air just like the Roho. I still will use water
bed, because I don't need turned that often and in my air bet I was told I
would need to be turned every few hours. I don't know the name of it either.
It was the only thing my insurance with cover, I will have to have someone look
on the mattress, it is on the hospital bed I'm not using.

I, however, I am unable to use a UPS near my ECU as it dampens out the X-10
signals to the rest of the house.
Best of luck in your endeavors.

Do you use an air mattress that is constantly defusing air? Does the inverter
power the air mattress very long? What do something like that cost? Dan

Yes, it has the automatic lock off control. It is powered by natural gas. Dan

Relax, you'll do fine. I'm 30 years post c 4-5 and still have a lot to learn
myself. Where did you do your rehab? Dan in Illinois

at this. But boy I sure feel like I have a lot to learn. I know what an
environmental control unit is, but as far as the UPS, and other initials and
such that are being used I have no clue how to follow them. Can anyone help
me? By the way, I came to know of this site through Steve Oldaker; he is
friends/acquaintances with my father's cousin. I am very grateful for the
connection.
Thanks,
