[QUAD-L] experiences with robaxin and tylenol 3...?
I have been taking 500 mg of robaxin and tylenol with codeine (don't know mg) for the last week for neck, shoulder and back pain. I take them 3 x day and if I don't I am pretty much miserable. I just got acupuncture and cupping, which usually works for me but the students I had sucked and I have to go again. I will have to go a couple more times, along with some massage, as I let the pain and stiffness build up for a while. I feel like a junkie asking for more next week. But I need it or I will kill the next person that irritates me when my back is in pain. Has anyone here quickly built up a tolerance to these? I know all the regular precautions with this stuff. It doesn't make me sleepy or weird. I just would like to hear any personal experiences you would like to share. Thanks! Check for yourself. Who is Barack Obama? Probable U.S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white ATHEIST from Wichita , Kansas . Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii. When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced. His father returned to Kenya. His mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a RADICAL Muslim from Indonesia. When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia. Obama attended a MUSLIM school in Jakarta. He also spent two years in a Catholic school. Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim. He is quick to point out that, 'He was once a Muslim, but that he also attended Catholic school.' Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that he is not a radical. Obama's introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this influence was temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya soon after the divorce, and never again had any direct influence over his son's education. Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Dunham, introduced his stepson to Islam. Obama was enrolled in a Wahabi school in Jakarta. Wahabism is the RADICAL teaching that is followed by the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world. Since it is politically expedient to be a CHRISTIAN when seeking major public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim background. ALSO, keep in mind that when he was sworn into office he *DID NOT* use the *HOLY BIBLE*, but instead the Koran. Barack Hussein Obama will *NOT* recite the Pledge of Allegiance nor will he show any reverence for our flag. While others place their hands over their hearts, Obama turns his back to the flag and slouches. Do you want someone like this as your PRESIDENT? Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential candidacy. The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the US from the inside out, what better way to start than at the highest level - through the President of the United States, one of their own! [QUAD-L] car dilemma
Anybody drive a car out there? I am getting a car after having driven a van for about 13 years. I'll get a car topper put on it, a new folding chair, an adapted gear shift (if the shifter is the kind that sits between the seats), the usual hand controls. I've been eyeing this '04 Malibu that has 30k miles and is still under warranty for the rest of the year. Here are my two biggest problems: The seat and parking brake. No seat is perfect, in fact, no seat seems to work for me and will need some kind of modification. I have driven in a car with no drivers power seat. It was fine but at that time I had more assistance and don't remember too well. The power seat was necessary in the van, with the swivel seat base because I HAD to move it around to get in and out. So, I may be able to get away with having a seat that is not power. THEN I will have to build up the seat somehow (a pillow?) to get it at the perfect height and then cover it with a leather or vinyl cover for easy transfer. Any good methods on building up a seat and making it easy for transfer? The parking brake situation...I think I can deal with the kind that sits between the seats with the little button on top. This Malibu has a pedal, though. So I would have to pay at least $900 for an electric brake. maybe twice that much. So I'm thinking to maybe go with some sort of manual device. I had something like this with my Astro- a rod with a big ball at the end. I rarely used it though because once you push it down, once you release it again, it would smack your hand really hard. I don't know yet if there have been improvements on this. I just don't want to pay $1,000k for something I rarely use. Anybody do any home jobs for thse pedal brakes? This is driving me NUTS thinking about all the what ifs! Why can't independance be easy?! Now I had a hard time pulling the plastic lever to release the brakemy dad drilled two holes in the plastic lever and attached a zip tie through the holesthis allows me to put hand in the zip tie and release the brake. If you can use a swivel transfer seat in a van, you should be able to transfer into the right car no prob. 1) you really need a two door car for the extra room to bring chair up close and pull legs in 2)you will need a folding chair, with a sling back because the chair topper cant pick up a rigid chair. 3)possible adaptation on the gear shift depending on hand function. 4) leather seats would be a plus , and a power seat( standard equipment) 5) if you get cloth seats, nylon pants can be worn The drawback to a car with a topper is in bad weather all the transferring is done in the rain. A van once your inside and you close the door you are safe and out of the weather. The car will handle a bit better and get somewhat better gas milege. Re: [QUAD-L] God, and Heaven-Hell
we didn't get kicked out of our church, but people sure acted different towards us. And then I had the whole you are a bad girl for having premarital sex and that's why you were in an accident comment. I agree with the whole notion that things happen as an effect of a cause that was made (like two people deciding to race on the highway) rather than because it was supposed to happen. I must say that although I wasn't exactly religious after my accident, I learned a new meaning of what faith means. Not faith in God but just plain old faith that you can effect your environment with work, good deeds, bad deeds, etc. also that there are things that happen that involved us that we can't explain. The Mystic law of cause and effect can be applied to any situation in the universe. It makes more sense to me than God and gives me the courage to want to affect my own environment. It fits in with evolution, but then so does God if you talk to the right person. I don't think the whole God thing is a bad idea, I just happen to view my universe in a different way. we all use whatever works for us. And whatever makes sense. I can't really say what happened to me after my accident that turned me off of the church. For my entire life I had gone through the motions and never really acquired something in my heart that went along with the faith I grew up in. suddenly, it occurred to me how much of a waste of time all that stuff was -- doing what other people wanted me to do. And that was my little awakening after my accident. Then I became quite rebellious, including exploring other spiritual practices. Re: [QUAD-L] tendon transfer
The doc who did my tendon transfer also put a pin in my thumb and really tightened my index finger so that my thumb would supposedly pinch against the index finger. The pinch never really occurred. Instead the straight thumb just got in the way, the index finger was too curled and the pin broke. Yeah ouch. So I had a surgery to correct that problem and now my index finger is still pretty tight. Not all the way against my hand or anything, but the stitching went up the inside of my finger so there is scar tissue there. The pinch works in a way, but not the way the doc thought it would. I need that thumb to bend. Now I just have a really strong grip and it allows me to grab something with one hand when I bring my wrist back. I was able to open my hand a little more and i lost that and now my hand is a little tighter, but for me it was worth it. I used to use my left hand to shake hands with others because I could open it more but now that index finger gets in the way. Oh well, I can hold a bottle of beer at the neck with no problem now! [QUAD-L] shower commode seat
I hope this isn't a repeat of someone else's question. I have a shower/commode chair that used to have a very soft cushy seat. The problem with that one was that the lining would crack and expose the wood underneath. Now Invacare has discontinued that replacement seat with one that is harder. It is too firm, but made so that the cracking problem does not occur, I suppose. Have you guys come across this, and how do you deal with a compromise? I have been duct taping a thick piece of foam, cut in the shape of the seat. Still not as perfect as I would like it to be. I think it is still a little too firm. Re: [QUAD-L] Caffeine and protein
I haven't had skin problems, just really disgusting bladder problems. My approach was to start from the bottom up. Vitamins, and cutting out sugar and caffeine, along with other supplements. Boosting the immune system. I eventually, after gradually working on this for a few years, just got used to not eating so much sugar and stuff and I had less to worry about as far as bladder stuff. It sounds like you aren't drinking tons and tons of Pepsi, but the amount you are drinking might make a difference in your health. Maybe just start finding other things to drink, if you want to quit, and do it gradually. The skin does like a healthy body. Maybe you can get your aide to massage you? When I couldn't find an answer I tried everything. As far as protein goes, I wish I knew myself. I have a nutrition book I need to get back into while I start my physical therapy. I'll try to remember to share what I learn from that, but maybe you could google daily proportions or something. It's a start. Women don't need problems, we have them already -it's called violence and rape. It's why we have to be carefull. I think any woman who gets the creeps from someone who has a fetish that involves her disability better listen to her instincts and use her best judgement. We don't need to choose from the bottom of the pile. I'm sure there are some nice devotees out there but it is an entirely different matter for women. The chair turns heads and attracts attention. But once that happens, there are fewer women than men who will pursue someone because they think they might be able to take advantage. I have found great people through ads in the paper. We have a great rehab facility in Washington. Physical therapists can be good resources for ideas for this sort of thing. When I was still living off of settlement money I would pay someone for just the basics, so not much housecleaning and such so my place was a pigsty. Now I have dshs and found an agency. They were paying for one person to do bowel care (a nurse) and one to do housecleaning and everything. I trained the woman who was doing the housecleaning and had it supervised throught the state's nurse delegation program, now she helps with everything. It does seem women with children do enjoy the flexibility that the job can bring. There are all kinds of people out there and I hope you find a great match! Contrary, what you have to do, or found, ya have to do it. My solution was to run an ad in the domestic colomn in a newspaper in an area I desired to live. The ad read something like, 38 year old quadriplegic looking to live with caregiver. Offering (at that time $1,300.) A woman with two old enough to work daughters, CNAs themselves were my best choice. As a new C/5 injury I pretty much broke myself in with my new found injury survival ways here. This was working out pretty well. A cousin I had never met started calling me insisting for me to move in with her in a house she recently bought. After two months of persuasiveness, I felt if she wanted me bad enough she could have me. So not involving her in my care outside of meals, could you, would yours, and the sort, I pretty well cut my teeth on hiring, working with, training, and firing attendants. After ten years it was time to move on. Again I ran my ad for someone to adopt me so to speak. Luck again, I moved in with a woman who recently gave birth, and not wanting to return to work was looking for someone just like me. Now after seven years I need to move on again. Long story short, how are other's living? Please share your stories with me direct, or to the list. I am so interested how others have met the challenge, particularly those on their own without money. I guess I am looking for encouragement and creativity. Thank you. Re: [QUAD-L] Where Is This Minority
Good point. Our experience is what I think make us a group. Everyone has their own way of framing their own perception of this and deciding where they do or don't belong. Obviously, SOMETHING has brought us to this group, as anyone reading this has not yet unsuscribed :-) I don't know when your paper is due, Nicki, but I just looked up disability studies books at Amazon, and there are a few. I think one that I liked was by Sharon L Snyder. People have degrees in this very subject(s). Another book I read was No Pity, which was pretty good. If the paper is just on what you think, then go for it. We do have the opportunity these days to read up on it since we are gaining understanding of the way social constructs work for or against us. It's deep. Ghettos? I like the term my Vietman vet friend used when referring to the building we were living in as a low rent storage bin for the elderly and indigent. Occupants were supposed to have some sort of disability. Most were elderly and/or mental. It was a zoo. But seriously, Washington's ghettos are not as bad as others around the country. At least Seattle's. I went through Seattle Housing Authority back over 10 years ago to get help finding an accessible place. The waiting list was maybe 1 1/2 years long. Now I know better. You can get the county to make your apartment reasonably accessible. If you own a home you can get an interest free loan that you pay back when you sell the house. This would not be for a major remodel, though. I know there are disabled people in nursing homes, how they get there I do not know. I'm sure though that Washington is not as bad as many other states. My complaints can only mirror my own experience. I would like to learn more about how it is for others. There is one particular building in Seattle that I avoided and fought to stay out of when going through the housing authority. I would consider it a ghetto. Huge depressing dark cement building for disabled people. I think of this when my friend in Korea describes the place they put disabled people near where he lives. The acidophilus that is in yogurt is what is good- especially when you're pushing lots of antibiotics. The idea is to replace the bad bacteria with the good bacteria we need to digest and prevent candida (yeast infections) from growing. The problem with yogurt is all the sugar! Ok, this is new and fascinating to me. I have always wondered what the white stuff is composed of. I have always had some sort of sediment off and on and really want to know what it is. Re: [QUAD-L] The sediment in my urine
The best thing that has worked for me is cranberry capsules or gelcaps. You can get them in as much as 1000 mg per cap from a supplement store and take a couple 1000 mg a few times a day. They even have some at some grocery stores. I have also gone to the naturopath (bastyr university in Seattle has sliding scale for low income), a few actually, who have made some awesome tinctures with concentrated herbs that worked. I have been told that vitamin C can irritate the bladder, but that is controvertial and depends on your body of course. It did work for me at one point. I learned a lot in the past year, especially not to lose hope. Instead of being sad or withdrawn this year on the second anniversary of my accident, I spent it with my new love. It was her birthday and I told her I had to go to work, even though I usually work from home on Wednesdays. I had her convinced that I wasn't going to do much for her birthday. Instead of going to work I went to a few stores, purchased several presents, balloons, cards, flowers, two cakes, and a bunch of her favorite foods. I decided to make the most of the day and be happy to be alive. Just thought I'd share, since somehow I feel like I know most of you guys. Thank you for being there in your own way. [QUAD-L] medical insurance, COBRA...anyone know about this stuff?
I was laid off from a seasonal job at the end of April. I did not, apparently, read the fine print because although I have earned $951.74 in benefits on my medical debit card, I cannot use this money because it has been over 30 days since I was laid off. My option is now to lose the money or pay a COBRA premium for two months of $237.45 each month to use that money. The money from the premium payment will go to my debit account, except for 2% which will go to them for administrative costs. Essentially, I will be paying over half of what I have in that account in order to have access to those funds I already have! Then I must use the rest quickly before I am terminated (I would not pay for another month). Has anyone heard of this craziness? I'm sick over it. Seems like a racket to me. I though I had untill october to use the money I already have in that account.-Kaye

Re: [QUAD-L] Work from home
I worked for NTI this past tax season and last year. I have mixed feelings about working for them. Your hours are based on call volume, so the season lasts about 3 months. If you're on benefits you have to be careful (I wasn't) that you don't go over the amount you're supposed to have. If you do as advised and make your schedule as available for all or most working hours during the day, they will give you large breaks so that you are invariably sitting at home all day (what can you do with two-1 hour breaks that are spaced apart? No time to even leave the house to run an errand) and waiting to clock in. Then if the call volume drops, they ask you, then plead with you to take time off. Of course you don't have to take it off but it's annoying. If you're interested, I would give it a go. I still have about $1000 on a medical debit card I still have to use. That part worked great for me since I have no dental coverage and need to get my teeth fixed. Just don't have any illusions that you are going to be one of their star performers and stay on the whole year. They probably keep less than 25% of the people they hire...but it could happen ;-) -kOn 6/19/06, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi everyone, Did anyone hear of National Telecommuting Institute? [QUAD-L] in response to the guy whose wife cheated on him and stuff...
I have deleted the original request for input on quaddom, and people's strange ways. Un/fortunately, whichever way you look at it, we have been put in quite the observance deck when it comes to watching people and how they respond to a huge phenomena like a spinal cord injury. Not that we're stuck in observation. We are dealing with a rollercoaster inside of ourselves and watching the circus outside. I was injured 13 years ago, when I was 16. My boyfriend was racing someone while I was asleep in the passenger's seat. And well, you know, lots of blood and broken stuff. He died 5 days later. Then I went in for rehab for three months. I was defensive of him because he was dead and my parents hated him and I figured he probably wouldn't have been proud of what happened to me. I was also defensive of my morality or whatever because the incident occurred while I was being dropped of from having snuck out of the house to spent the night with him (a guy 2 years older, for shame!). And my huge family is Catholic on both sides. People at church were whispering. Then I found out my boyfriend had been sleeping with my arch enemy. Ouch! Then the deacon at our church says to a close friend that the accident happened because I was having premarital sex. Huh. After all that happened that's one thing that really stuck with me for obvious reasons, but I'll point them out. If there's a God, I don't think God punishes people. Otherwise everyone in my confirmation class would also have been struck down. What the hell does an accident have to do with morality? And someone else's, at that. I didn't believe that crap for a nanosecond. That was such an injust thought, that I could have been to blame for such a horrific thing. I went back to school and I had new friends because some people were comfortable being with me, a couple really stuck by me, and the others just got weird. But human nature being as it is, I guess I can't exactly blame them for not knowing what to do. Then I go to college, meet cool people, experiment with anything I could, and learn more about how to deal with my body and other people. Now, I look at my life and feel like I'm watching a movie sometimes. I mean, the things people do and say, the way everything has turned out, the things I've done and said...I just shake my head and laugh. I am sometimes flabbergasted when I think about the relationships that have developed from having to have someone help with my care. I mean, who in their right mind would want to be my friend after being so up close and personal with my shit? It happens. And although my physical state has been a magnet for some serious freaks, I've made some beautiful friendships. I mean, f*%k, I've even broken a couple hearts (unintentionally, I'm really nice). And soon after my injury I thought I would never have sex or a relationship again. I wasn't interested and was so sure no one else was. So much life has happened since then. The same kind of stuff that happens to other people, and then there's this whole other dimention we have to deal with. It's just weird. I'm not sure I have a point other than encouragement. You know, perseverance and open mindedness, that kind of thing. Deep breaths. Humor. Find out what you want to do and don't let people rent space in your head. The drug and alcohol thing doesn't really help long term, but you know this. Those pain pills will getchya! I don't know what you're into but when I was smoking a lot of pot and eating a lot it was difficult to figure out what was going on with my body. And pills and alcohol just help me be depressed and constipated and stuck mentally. Don't hang out with people that are screwed up and thus good company (the whole misery loves company trap). And don't be a captive audience for too much of people's crap. Actually, that's what I have to still tell myself! Btw, I'm not saying all this because my life is cake right now. It ebbs and flows. You'll see that many people have it worse off than you do and many of them are able bodied. Keep your head up, bro! Hugs, Kaye-- Life is 440 horsepower in a 2-cylinder engine. -Henry Miller

Turnaround space in a bathroom. Grab bars aren't enough for me. In fact, I don't even use them. But I need to get in, turn around and close the door for Christ's sake. KnowwhatImean?-k-- Life is 440 horsepower in a 2-cylinder engine. -Henry Miller
[QUAD-L] Hi, new member, supra pubic, etc...
I hope I'm doing this right! I've been injured for 13 years, C6. Six months or so after my injury I had a procedure called mitrofanoff where the surgeon used my appendix to make a tunnel that goes from my belly button to my bladder. So I cath via my navel. Less chance for bacteria to be introduced, being that it's away from the vaginal area and all. I can do it anywhere so long as I have a catheter, empty bottle and betadine swabs. I have had my share of Utis and have minimized reoccurance (and symptoms which are enough without having the actual infection) by sticking to sterile catheters drinking lots of water and stuff and staying away from caffeine and taking cranberry capsules. That's my experience.-k-- Life is 440 horsepower in a 2-cylinder engine. -Henry Miller
[QUAD-L] Thanks for the warm welcome!
I live in Seattle and am lucky enough to have found a wonderful woman who lives only 3 houses away who helps with my care. Thanks for the link, going to check it out now...-- Life is 440 horsepower in a 2-cylinder engine. -Henry Miller
