It ended up being due to the disposal VMs for each AppVM not being set
properly. Figured it out by running a qvm-run command manually, such as:

qvm-run -q -a --service --dispvm=personal --
qubes.StartApp+org.gnome.Terminal

returning:

Refusing to create DispVM out of this AppVM, because
template_for_dispvms=False

Once I corrected the DispVM option, rerunning the command produces no
error, but still nothing happens.

Maybe the services aren't working within the VM?

Thanks,

Check the syntax for the launching.
Manually enter the command into a terminal and see what happens.
Then run the command inside the guest and see if it works.

if none of that works, then it's the actual run command from Dom0 you will need
to investigate.

[qubes-users] Qubes 4.0 Desktop file no longer working

2018-04-08 Thread Andrew Morgan
Hey there,

The upgrade to Qubes 4.0 was mostly painless, with a few things needed
to be set up and worked-around here and there. I did do a backup from
R3.2 and restore to R4.0.

The only issue I'm still facing is that none of my .desktop files
(application menus under the XFCE menu) seem to work. When I click on,
say, Personal - Terminal the Personal VM is started, but no terminal
shows up. Doing the same thing results in nothing happening.

Running `qvm-sync-appmenus personal` results in no change. The .desktop
files are in dom0 and personal, but for some reason the application
still isn't launching. I have to manually launch everything from Qubes
Manager -> Run command in VM -> gnome-terminal.

Is there a way I can debug this further?

Thanks,
Andrew Morgan

X5600 series.

"they" as in the CPU(s).

Yes, the Intel ones. But if it's not turned on in the CPU, then it won't be
available.

You were right about that, the version of the tool I was using was the wrong
one, and didn't know about EPT/SLAT. So I'll try it again with that CPU when I
get to that location next week.

Well, I'll use Qubes 4 when I get hardware that Qubes 4 is compatible with.

So until then I just have to edit the XML file?

Does Qubes 4 still use Python for everything? Or has it been upgraded to
something less resource hungry?

Re: [qubes-users] Qubes 4.0 and Private Internet Access? Tasket VPN solution...

2018-04-08 Thread velcro
Correction to instructions I followed:

Create proxy using VPN template:
sys-VPN
Green
Provides Network  Checked
connect to sys-net
Launch settings  - Checked

Settings:
Add files and Terminal to Applications
Initial memmory = 500mb
Max memory = 4500
Add “vpn-handler-openvpn” to services

Open a terminal and file manager in new proxy appVM:

cd “Then drag qubes4 file into terminal from tasket/github”
sudo bash ./install

Enter VPN name and password

Close terminal

Reopen terminal

Transfer XXX PIA config files into your new VPN AppVM:
Change your PIA config file to “openvpn-client” and add DNS if wanting to use a
DNS service other then PIA
setenv vpn_dns 'IP of DNS provider'

Move PIA files by running this command:

sudo mv “Then highlight the .pem, .crt and config file (renamed to
“openvpn-client.ovpn) and drag them into the terminal” /rw/config/vpn

Final terminal commands to create .conf file:

cd /rw/config/vpn
sudo ln -s openvpn-client.ovpn vpn-client.conf

Restart VM!!! Wait for “Ready to Connect” and “Link is UP”

Re: [qubes-users] Qubes 4.0 and Private Internet Access? Tasket VPN solution...

2018-04-08 Thread velcro
Once again Tasket/Chris thanks for the help...got it working with both Debian
and Fedora in 4.0 running as a Appvm. The issue was in the .conf file/password
linking and the order I was doing this. I think my debian issue was not having
openvpn in the debian template.

Is Qubes4 still the file to use?

Great work and thanks again.

V

I followed these specific directions (kinda of a hybrid between terminal and
GUI...inline with your instructions on github):

Create new appvm Qube:

For Debian proxy, add OpenVPN package to your VPN template:
su
apt-get update && apt-get install openvpn unzip

Create proxy using VPN template:
sys-VPN
Green
Provides Network  Checked
connect to sys-net
Launch settings  - Checked

Settings:
Add files and Terminal to Applications
Initial memmory = 500mb
Max memory = 4500
Add “vpn-handler-openvpn” to services

Open a terminal and file manager in new proxy appVM:

cd “Then drag qubes4 file into terminal from tasket/github”
sudo bash ./install

Enter VPN name and password

Close terminal

Reopen terminal

Transfer Tasket/Qubes4 file and PIA config files into your new VPN AppVM:
Change your PIA config file to “openvpn-client” and add DNS if wanting to use a
DNS service other then PIA
setenv vpn_dns 'IP of DNS provider'

Move PIA files by running this command:

sudo mv “Then highlight the .pem, .crt and config file (renamed to
“openvpn-client.ovpn) and drag them into the terminal” /rw/config/vpn

Final terminal commands to create .conf file:

cd /rw/config/vpn
sudo ln -s openvpn-client.ovpn vpn-client.conf

Restart VM!!! Wait for “Ready to Connect” and “Link is UP”

[qubes-users] Re: Removed/renamed VMs are not completely removed from system configuration data

2018-04-08 Thread cooloutac
I had same thing happen to me but only when restoring appvms of the same name
installed on installer. or cancelling a restore halfway through and restoring
again.

I also noticed you can remove them from system, but they will still be looked
for on bootup. I ended up just reinstalling this time choosing not to install
any default appvms and letting restore completely finish.

You have to change it to https if using sys-whonix updatevm for the templates.

[qubes-users] Removed/renamed VMs are not completely removed from system configuration data

2018-04-08 Thread Andrew David Wong
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Hi all,

I'm sending the following question at the request of Achim Patzner
(CCed):

```
What I did: I restored (among other machines) sys-net, sys-firewall
and work from a backup. These machines were marked as auto-start. They
were automaticaly renamed to *1 on import, their (auto-start) flags
were kept. I immediately used qvm-remove to get rid of them except
"work1" which I renamed to "work-32" using the qubes-manager.
What I expected: I expected the machines to be completely removed and
the name change being appropriately recorded in the database. I forgot
the auto-start feature at that time.
What I found:
Re: [qubes-users] [Qubes 4.0] Updating migrated templates from 3.2
2018-04-08 Thread p . o . mosier
That's odd.  It doesn't work for me with templates that I have with non-default
names.  That's why I was asking this question.
There's no instructions out there about which qubes packages need updating or
installing, nor are there instructions about how to update the Qubes
repositories.
This is the kind of thing that I was asking about.  Without knowing all that
info it doesn't matter if the template has a non-default name or not.
[qubes-users] Just a data point -- RC4 installs fine on Dell Inspiron i5759-8835SLV laptop triple boot
2018-04-08 Thread billollib
Just as a data point, I installed RC4 on my Dell laptop as part of a triple
boot setup (Win 10, Netrunner linux, Qubes 4.0), and it installed fine with one
exception (which I'll get to below).  I have the BIOS set to UEFI with secure
boot disabled.
I had to install three times, but the third time was a charm.  The first two
times, I got an error saying that it couldn't install sys-firewall.  I don't
remember what the first error was, but the second one was that it said it was
already running (go figure).   The third time, it installed without a hitch.
All three times, I used the default configuration setup.  The primary
difference was that the third time, I unplugged my usb mouse and let it install
with nothing attached.
I don't know if there'a any reason that having a usb mouse plugged into my
laptop would cause a problem, but there you go.
I haven't started trying any fancy configuration of my setup yet (I'm going to
try to move to KDE and do some personalization), but networking works fine,
windowing and desktop works fine, and all is right with the world in that
respect.
It takes about 45 seconds for a vm to come up and show a console or browser
window, and just a second or so for a new window to come up once the domain is
up and running.
ok thanks for your input. Ill just reinstall, I suppose. I do have backups!!
Cant
get them unless I boot into rescue because the usb no longer works without my
sys-usb being able to start. I will try to recreate this and see on my second
HDD.
Ill check the dnf log too.
I couldn't recreate this. I installed Kali light to /dev/xvdc (which is
"-volatile" according to lvs), rebooted, and everything seems fine. Did
you install an update lately? Check /var/log/dnf.log*.
Maybe this broke it somehow.
Not exactly sure on how to fix it or what else might be broken, so a
reinstall is probably safest right now.
That is by design. Review this mailing list to see where the same question
If you don't get any other suggestions from this list, probably best thing
to do is to add your own note to that issue saying you also have it in
debian-9 templates. That way, you will get notified if there is any
progress on it...
Go to Qube Settings on your cloned VM, then Applications, then hit the
large Refresh button at the top.
[qubes-users] TemplateVM clonning returning a cube with blank Applications - Available field and no terminal
2018-04-08 Thread qubes-fan
My laptop is Asus UX305F, running Qubes-OS 4.0
Hi, I have an issue with a TemplateVM cloning. When I clone a template
(debian-9, fedora-26, whonix) the clone gets completely blank field under
Applications - Available. There are no apps available. Also there is no
terminal available for the clone.
When I go to Start - debian-9-clone, I get an option only debian-9-clone: Qube
Settings, no terminal available.
I tried to clone all 3 default Qubes templates, through terminal commands or
through Qube manager, but still the same output.
Thank you in advance for your support.
p.s. as my first post here, hank you guys for your excellent job you do!
[qubes-users] Template VM, Only terminal has internet
2018-04-08 Thread Anyomonous Z
Hi, I have internet in my created vm's ( both terminal & firefox ) but not in
my template vm's. Only the terminal seems to have internet. Clicking edit qube
firewall settings gives me an error message saying that 'this qube has
networking disabled. Basic > Networking' . Sys-net also comes up with this
error, while firewall doesn't.
Please help! Thanks =)
