[RBW] SEA v PDX... and the winner is...

2013-06-03 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt

Five of us met at a campground in the shadow of Mt Adams for the *Seattle
vs Portland Country Bike Rumble*. We got things squared away at camp and
set out for the Rumble Ride. We headed up The North Fork Cispus River for
about about 10 miles…. a fair amount of climbing, lots of breaks, bike
talk, and we found a nice view point to hang out for a snack and some
hanging out before heading back down. The Portland crew whipped up a
spaghetti dinner then we settled around the camp fire until well after
dark.

In the morning the Seattle crew (aka Brian) was the first one up so he got
a fire going and cooked a big batch of eggs. After breakfast and cleaning
up around camp, Charlie had to head home, but the rest of us headed out to
investigate the snow level. We figured we'd eventually be stopped by the
snow and have to turn around. The snow ended up being mostly melted. We got
crazy close to making the connection to connect to our 40 mile loop. We
implemented the Manny Principle (keep pressing forward despite not really
knowing what's up ahead and even though it's likely to cause you to be late
getting home). The loop turned out to include a spectacular 5 mile descent
down a jeep road. Following the ride we loaded the bikes into the cars and
headed our separate ways.

As for who won the Rumble… I't wasn't exactly clear. We were so
pre-occupied riding, telling stories, geeking out on bikes, and generally
having a great time that the Rumble part of it fell off the radar. Perhaps
we'll have to do it again and be more on top of it.

Meade,

Was that 98F on the cyclo-computer? If so I know that feeling, Saturday
rode 40 miles in near 100F weather drank lots of water. Great ride
description and all the pics were fantastic.

Saturday, Dan, Paul, and I took off from historic Scottsville with a
general route plan in mind, nothing set other than to go down one side of
the James River, cross somewhere and to return to Scottsville and then
swing into the James River Brewery for a quick post ride recovery
beverage. We had hardly gotten started but the constant hum of the Brood 2
of the 17 year cicadas began and stuck with us all day. The critters were
humming, flying around, and catching rides on the bikes and one even
managed to get into Dan’s helmet. We ended up taking the Hatton Ferry, the
last non-motorized cable ferry in the US across the river; I had tried to
catch the ferry for years but low water, high water, not operating,
mechanical or whatever and always thwarted this river crossing. So it was
all of our first crossing at this historic ferry and Paul even knew the
ferryman, Craig…great experience and addition to a bike ride…we crawled up
the hill into Buckingham County from the river bottom and somewhere along
the way decided to make Yogaville our destination. The heat made us feel
like we were on a pilgrimage through India but a picnic pavilion at a
country church complete with ceiling fans made lunch much more
pleasurable. The Lotus Shire at Yogaville with its pastel colors is always
an interesting sight in rural Buckingham County and quite a contrast to the
usual local color. We paid our respects and got an all too brief respite
from the heat and sun and then had to hightail it back toward Scottsville
because I had a dinner schedule to meet. Well, the nasty hot headwind we
had been fighting all day didn’t do a 180 on us but remained constant,
steady and strong at our backs. We buzzed through Glenmore and grabbed a
quick break for water and calories and then hit the pavement again. My
route hopped onto Route 20 for just a short distance but the traffic so
fairly low and the wind perfectly behind us so we opted for speed over
scenery and must have averaged about 21 +/- mph (at times much more) most
of the rest of the ride which was way above our average so far. We rolled
into Scottsville, threw the bikes on the car and headed straight to the
best recent additional in Scottsville, the James River Brewery to sample
their finest and catch some music in their beer garden. Following are a few
shots from all three of us…at times different then at times amazingly
duplicative. Bike content, we were spinning on a Bilenky, a Rivendell,
and a Salsa…and all wearing Keen biking sandals…

[RBW] Re: ISO Tektro or cheaper Linear long pull Interrupter Levers

2013-06-03 Thread clyde canter
I just got around to installing the long reach Tektro interrupters this
weekend. It seems to me I was correct in my assumption that the quick
release works off the reach adjuster screw.
The farther in the screw is, or the closer the lever is to the bar
determinshow much slack
is in housing you get by turning the little red knobs. On the ones I have
if you have the maximum amount of reach, or the screw backed out as far as
it will go there is zero amount of slack generated by turning the red
knobs. I have mine set up with the screws about half way screwed into the
holes and this gets me 1, maybe 1 1/2 mm of slack. The rear brakes on
this particular setup are slack enough that I can get the noodle from its
cradle by simply pushing the q/r button on the main brake lever (also
Tektrobranded, don't remember the model number). The front falls short
of this by
what looks a little over 1 mm. I can twist the red knob on the interrupter
and get just enough slack for the cradle to release the noodle. I can see
very little that the knobs actually do. IMO they
are not very good as a q/r nor as a reach adjuster as the amount is
extremely minimal in either case.
You DO get some, if very little of both. I haven't gotten to test them
much other than a couple of trips around the cul de sac but they seem to
work very well.
I should probably note that turning the knob doesn't always put the levers
into q/r mode.
Sometimes you might need to push the lever outward as you turn the knob to
get it to click into place.
Also it might spring back on its own. All in all nice levers with nice
feel. I don't see why
they bothered with the knobs as they do very little (IMHO) . I think a 1/4
turn on the barrel adjusters would accomplish the task just as well. Now
if only they modulated as well as caliper/ cantis.

Best,
Clyde Canter

I've been on ibob since '96, guess it took me quite a while to finally nab a

was just about all that existed, then flirted with aluminum at SunTour, then
carbon at Trek. Started looking at steel again after trashing my very first
Trek OCLV frame on its maiden voyage, first or second front shift dumped the
chain and sawed through several critical layers of chainstay carbon. I was
honestly Just Riding Along (JRA). Frame was toast and I started thinking maybe
carbon wasn't a great bicycle frame material.

Started reading ibob, Grant/Riv and the Sheldon Chronicles, grew increasingly
disenchanted with aluminum/carbon. My steel epiphany/satori was my first
lunchtime ride on a '99/'00 Fuji Roubaix Pro, tig'd Reynolds 853, when I
realized it was the rightest feeling bike I had ridden in more than a decade.
Dove back into steel in a big way, got rid of all my non-ferrous steeds and
haven't looked back.

So now I find myself an old cuss, fatter and weaker than ever, but I've never
been happier with my bikes. My love for lugged steel has been rekindled (I'm
also OK with fillet-brazed and even tig'd) and I seriously jones for
small-volume American handbuilt frames from the '70s-'80s---a weird full-circle
thing for me because some of these builders were customers of mine or
show-buddies from my SunTour days. I made it to NAHBS in Richmond 2010 and
Denver this year, also finally just made it to Cirque. Left behind a
period-correct components phase and now often run semi-modern parts where it
makes sense to me; also ride only spiky platform pedals these days, no more
foot retention.

Although my riding mileage is still pitifully low, it's generally on a slow
upswing. I re-connected with the Bicycle Touring Club of North Jersey (BTCNJ),
which had a couple hundred members in '82 and now has a couple thousand, and
getting back out on club rides has been fun. Not a lot of steel out there,
though, especially higher-end steel.

Took a few piccies of the Riv today, did a flattish 25mi fixed ride w/500' of
climbing, my legs are toast. Here's a small flickr set, you'll also find some
other bikes, and some overly-large sets from NAHBS 2013 and Cirque:

Looking forward to some Rivish dialog

[RBW] Re: SEA v PDX... and the winner is...

2013-06-03 Thread Mike
Dude, that sounds and looks like a great time. Was it buggy at all? Sure
would have loved to have been out there with you all. Looks like there were
3 Hilsens, 1 Hillborne and an LHT.

There's no *good *reason why rides like this shouldn't happen more
frequently with PNW Rivsters. Gifford Pinchot NF makes a fantastic meeting
ground and offers so much in the way of paved and unpaved roads. While I
doubt I'll spend time there this year, next year we should shoot for some
kind of three day ramble in July. Obviously for folks that have the ability
to do it this year, go this year. It's also real easy to ride between
Gifford and Mt Rainier NP. There's a great little Forest Service road out
of Packwood that's perfect for connecting the two.

I imagine others on the trip still have images to post, looking forward to
them.

[RBW] Re: Ride Report - The Cicada Ride (Brood 2)...or the Hatton Ferry, Yogaville, and James River Brewery Spin...

2013-06-03 Thread Jeremy Till
Soundtrack for this ride report:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-hmhF9cn_k

On Sunday, June 2, 2013 8:34:04 PM UTC-7, Meade Anderson wrote:

I led a 68 mile ride on Saturday in 90 degree heat that definitely
qualified as a ramble. It's really all a matter of mind-set: it's not
the length that makes it a ramble for me, it's the enjoyment of scenery

distinguish from the sort of group ride where it's all inward-facing,
all about the pack and the pace. That kind of ride might as well be on

I nose breathe all the time (except on climbs over 10,000 feet, where bugs

I've got close to 1,000 miles on my (new) Brooks B 17 Select. It has
darkened to a nice honey color now. But it has never stained my clothes,
not even my white shorts. I have put two light applications of Proofide on,
with no ill effects. Very comfortable saddle. I love it!

[RBW] Re: Start the summer right. Mixed terrain June 2nd

2013-06-03 Thread Jeremy Till
Think Manny is still out camping so I'll start with the ride reports

Normally any ride where I get three flat tires and am plagued by a
saddlebag rubbing on the rear wheel would seem pretty frustrating to me,
but this ride was so awesome that all of these minor problems paled in
comparison to my stoke. Manny lead us on an awesome ride starting from the
Fremont BART station, pretty much the southern extremity of the East Bay
line. I'd never really biked in Fremont before and I was quickly blown
away as we blasted up Niles Canyon to Sunol, a beautiful and fast stretch
of road. Stopping in Sunol for supplies and to pet Mayor Bosco for good
luck, we headed up driveways and fireroads towards Pleasanton Ridge, which
seems to favorite with local MTBers. From there it was rolling fireroads
and plentiful singletrack detours as we made our way northwards, through
increasingly deserted lands. Somewhere in there I got the first of three
flats, which seemed to be related to a bad rim strip. Popping out on
Palomares Rd. we bombed the paved descent (who says you can't get aero on
Albas?) into Castro Valley for a Safeway lunch. From there Manny took us
up on trails around Lake Chabot and the golf course (golf balls!), where
the second flat happened. Manny had to get back home to get his camping
gear for the evening's S240 so he took as far the southern extremity of
Skyline Dr. before dropping down into San Leandro. I lead the rest of us
up Skyline and down Joaquin Miller through Montclair to the Rockridge BART
station for the rest of the folks to get home to the city. Leaving the
BART I felt my rear going flat for the third time, luckily there was an
open bike shop right there so I bought another tube and a new Velox rim
strip. Got it fixed and rode home, pretty stoked to arrive on my doorstep
in Berkeley after riding all the way from Fremont, mostly on trails. An
epic day all around.

We had a good mix of bikes on this ride, everything from a full-on
(monster) cross bike to a couple of well-setup Rando machines, and of
course Manny's Hillborne. I was on my new LHT with Albatrosses and 42mm
tires, and it was perfect for this ride.

Pics to prove it happened, although I seemed to stop taking pictures after
Pleasanton Ridge so you'll just have to believe me about that part:

talk, and we found a nice view point to hang out for a snack and some
hanging out before heading back down.

2013-06-03 Thread Deacon Patrick
This is fascinating! I see all kinds of wildlife running trails. Running
barefoot or in moccasins is so quiet they just don't hear me coming. I've
jumped over rabbits, foxes, turkey and nearly run into deer and bear. I see
much less on my bike. Tires make a lot of noise in comparison to bare feet.
It's also interesting that many of the wildlife photos are in urban
settings -- perhaps the animals are accustomed to ignoring human noise,
peddles cranking, tires on dirt, etc.?

The deer stood there as I passed him, and stayed as I fumbled around

The heat made us feel
like we were on a pilgrimage through India but a picnic pavilion at a

pleasurable. The Lotus Shire at Yogaville with its pastel colors is always
an interesting sight in rural Buckingham County and quite a contrast to the

from the heat and sun and then had to hightail it back toward Scottsville
because I had a dinner schedule to meet.

[RBW] New-to-Me Saluki

2013-06-03 Thread Michael Hechmer
Really enjoying this bike!I bought a new Ram in 2005 and after 25 years
of riding didn't ever expect to have a bike I enjoyed riding more than the
Ram, but this Saluki is challenging that. For years I read the posts and
claims for the benefits of 650B, in this case Pari-Moto's, with some
skepticism but wanting to try it out for myself. I still love riding the
Ram and it does quite well even on dirt roads with Grand Bois Cerf tires
but the extra comfort factor definitely goes with the Saluki. The Ram is
lighter, a little (but not too much) quicker on acceleration and climbing,
while the Saluki is a bit more stable. Equal in the speed category. They
both downhill fabulously but the wider tires give more confidence. Saluki's
longer TT completely eliminates the slight TCO I get with fenders on the
Ram. Biggest problem has been deciding which bike to ride but both bikes
very quickly feel like extensions of my mind.

Here are some pics: https://www.icloud.com/photostream/#A2532ODW4XTk4

I rode the bike as it came to me for a few weeks but knew I would need a
shorter stem, so had to sacrifice a gorgeous 13 cm Pearl. (FS) I also liked
the Mafac Levers. They are well made, very handsome, comfortable,
especially standing up, and work great; but I decided I didn't want to go
back to non-aero levers. I kept trying to rest my water bottle on the bars
and found the cable in the way. So I figured while I had the cockpit torn
apart I would swap out the 8 speed BE Shimano for 9 speed DT Silver. Also
nice Superbe pedals were too small so my White/Bruce Gordon went on. But
they may get replaced with Speedplay Frogs. I've never gotten 100% into
Riv clipless riding.

I'm going to post a separate review of the new levers and a question about
a small quirk in the Specialized cranks.

[RBW] New Tektro TRP Levers - Review

2013-06-03 Thread Michael Hechmer
I splurged on the new Levers with Gum hoods. I had to swallow a bit on the
price, especially since you can get the older style Cane Creek version with
gum hoods for a third the price. I have no regrets.

The levers come with a little insert that goes under the hood, depending on
where on the bars you want them - and an instructional picture that was
useless. It was a little awkward getting that on but after that the
installation was a snap. The brake cable goes over the lever and you get a
really good view of the hole you are trying to hit. That's important for
my old eyes.

The levers are very comfortable, perhaps a tad narrower than the ones they
replaced but very pleasing to my hands, both sitting and standing. They
pull a lot of cable, which makes set up with canti brakes very simple. They
have a very light touch and a nice feature on the quick release. Instead
of resetting the QR pin manually these automatically reset when you
compress the lever. Again nice for us old guys who often say the Senility
Prayer:

God grant that I only forget the people I don't like, only bump into the
ones I do, and the eye sight to tell them apart.

[RBW] Crank Design

2013-06-03 Thread Michael Hechmer
My new Saluki came with a classy, classic Specialized crank. But I kept
hearing a little clicking noise when in the big ring. Eventually I figured
out that the crank arm was just grazing the edge of the (Campy Triple) FD.
Adjusting it made it graze the chain. I went back and forth with this a
couple of times. Stared at it and considered raising the FD a couple of
mm. Then I measured the difference between the tooth and the inside of the
arm - 8.5mm. Raising the FD should align it next to a thinner part of the
arm but would also degrade shifting.

I went around the shop measuring all the cranks on my and my wives bikes.
 Here's what I got:

Shimano 600 -10mm
Alpina 11.5
Ultegra 11.5
White VBC - 15mm
DaVinci - 15mm

Any suggestions, short of grinding the back of the arm?

[RBW] White horse tavern

2013-06-03 Thread Michael Hechmer
I went looking at the Riv Blug to see if I had perhaps won a Betty for
Patty. As I scanned down the post on old crowns I came to a picture of
the White Horse Tavern in NYC. I used to drink there when I was an
undergraduate back in the 60's. There was a waitress who always wore
backless dresses. It made me want to order another Black Tan just to see
her walk away!

Front is ok Tiagara Hub 32h laced to a Velocity Synergy Rim - purchased

Both wheels are true and round, The rIvy hub was spaced for 6spd meaning
absolutely dishless.

I will also include the Col de Vie tires pictured and tubes.

Looking for $400 plus shipping (for US figure around $50-60 shipping cost,
Canada about $35), pay pal preferred.

On the Rivy hub you will notice a single speed freewheel as I was running
it 2x1 with a paul Melvin, I will leave that on its easy to take off, was
greased up, if interested I will throw in the Melvin for $50 no extra
shipping costs.

Since I am shipping anyways, again if interested I will throw in Moustache

I was introduced to Rivendell Bicycle Works and Grant Petersen's writings
almost two years ago and was very intrigued. I bought my first adult
bicycle, a Trek Multitrack, in 1995 and rode it for twelve years and then
gave it to my dad and bought a 2007 Trek 7.2 FX. I was riding the FX when
I discovered RBW and because I wanted to test some of Grant's ideas, I gave
the 7.2 to my dad and got my old Multitrack back from him. I rode it for a
bit and discovered it was too small so I started watching Craigslist for a
replacement and about 3 months later I scored the same year and model
 Multitrack in a larger size.

I've spent the last year or so upgrading different components on that
bike and reading about frame geometry and comparing that to the ride
characteristics of my bike. I quickly discovered that my bike had too much
trail so I bought a new fork with 1cm more rake and dropped the trail from
74 to 66mm. This was a vast improvement. I also decided I wanted to try
longer chainstays, a lower bottom bracket and even lower trail so I started
searching for appropriate frames and finally found the Handsome Devil.

Handsome Cycles was started in Minneapolis by a couple of guys who work
in a bike shop where there is a great deal of reverence for Bridgestone
bicycles. With Grant's blessing they recreated the XO-1 and then designed
the Devil as a 700c version of the XO-1.

The Devil has 73 degree seat and head tube angles, a 45mm rake fork
(trail of 60), chainstays of 43.6 + cm, and 70mm of bottom bracket drop.
The Devil's trail is right where Grant has stated he likes it, the bottom
bracket is higher by Rivendell standards but lower than what I was riding
and the chainstays came out to 44.5 cm with the forward facing dropouts.
All of my bikes have had 73 degree seat tube angles so the more shallow
angles are still an area to be explored for me. Otherwise, this bike is a
solid middle-ground between what I was riding and a Hunqapillar. In fact,
it has the same basic geometry as the Legolas and the 1994 Bridgestone
 RB-T.

I've only ridden it a couple of miles but my initial impressions are very
positive. I don't feel a huge difference from the additional chainstay
length but the bike feels much more stable and smooth and surprisingly, the
front end feels more stable with 60mm of trail than it did with 66mm of
trail. The overall stability I attribute to the lower bottom bracket (an
maybe the longer chainstays) and the more stable feeling front-end I'm
guessing is a result of 60mm of trail being in the so-called neutral
steering range. I know I never would have take my hands off the
handlebars of my Trek but I was completely comfortable riding this bike
 with no hands.

The plan now is to eventually make my way out to RBW headquarters so I
can actually test ride a Hunqapillar. If the ride quality improvement from
the Devil to the Hunqapillar is equal to the improvement from the Trek to
the Devil, I'll set my sights on eventually getting the Hunq.

 Specs:

 55cm Handsome Devil
 Deore 48/36/26 crankset
 11-28 9-speed cassette
 Deore V-brakes
 Velocity Dyad rims
 Schwalbe 40mm Dureme tires

A more creative spirit than I will be able to adapt these both to cycling!

[RBW] Re: Oiling a Select saddle

2013-06-03 Thread Matt Beebe
There is no consistent frequency for leather treatment, since the condition
of the leather depends on so many variables. The foremost consideration
is probably how often you ride your bike, but also whether your bike spends
a lot of time outdoors, climate, etc. I think the best policy is to
just go by the appearance of the leather. When it starts to appear dry
(the color/texture begins to look mottled, and the leather has no 'pull up'
or does not discolor at all when you press on it, it may be time for a
little sparing treatment. Also, if you have an old saddle and no
proofide (or ran out), you can make your own conditioner with beeswax and
vegetable oil.

[RBW] Re: Crank Design

Jeremy is right. You could try to squish the outer cage of your FD or get
one that has a flatter outer cage to start with. Old front derailers are a
dime a dozen, so you should be able to try lots of things on the cheap. My
mid 80s Stumpjumper has a Deore deer head front der and that same crankset.
 Works nice.

The test case for such a narrow gap is the old TA Pro 5 Vis -- I hear that
the new ones have a wider gap. I have an old one on the Ram and use an old
7400 Dura Ace FD, which works fine. The downside, such as it is, is that,
at least with the small gap on the TA, it requires great precision in fd
adjustment to ensure, together, proper angle, proper height, and proper
throw, and, at least for me, I reached this precision only through much
experiment. Installing an old early '90s XT drivetrain, or an old
Stronglight 99 with any '80s or '90s road derailleur, on the contrary, was
always perfectly easy by comparison.

I'm running a Velo Orange Grand Cru 50.4BCD crankset with a single chainring
(http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/components/cranksets/grand-cru-50-4bcd-crankset-mkii.html)
on my Quickbeam, and I'm at a loss to see how it would work if there was a
derailleur in the mix. Even an old-style Campy Record no lip front mech
wouldn't fit in the very small gap between the chain and the crankarm.

Mine is the first model, so perhaps they've addressed this issue in the MK II
version.

Patrick, guess I got lucky with my Cyclotouriste. Never had a hitch with
it, with a Shimano 600EX FD. I did have to change my bottom bracket to get
the chainline (to get the escape gear to clear the chainstay), and I used
the SK 126mm. Everything dialed right in on the first try, and never had
an adjustment squirm.

8.5mm sounds really really tight, because even the largest 9-speed chain is
6.8mm - add the cage thickness, and that only gives you about 2mm
adjustment freedom in the FD.
OK, I started measuring gaps. - my cyclotouriste has 10mm. Even my Campy
10-speed Centaur crank has a 12mm gap there.

And here's the kicker. My Nuovo Record crank would have 8.5 mm, but I have
recent TA chainrings on it,and it has a 10mm gap between the chainring and
the crankarm.

I was able to run the FD really snug, with half step chainrings, 46/41,
which was a nice combination on a 6-speed rear.
The thin TA 144 bcd chainrings added significant gap.

My daughter is about to build up an old Team Fuji frame this summer, and
she gets this crankset, but with 52/ 41. I have the 46T outer hanging on a
peg in the garage, in near-perfect shape.

Here is the cyclotouriste, which also required the Cyclone GT derailleur
for chain wrap.

Re: [RBW] Re: Crank Design

2013-06-03 Thread PATRICK MOORE
My setup is made easier because I am running only 7 cogs with spacers at
front and back. (Segue: with a spacer just behind the lockring, you can use
any size cog as the outer. I plan to build a 18-20-22-24-27-30-34 six
speed to use with a 53 t inner. Just kidding, but the 14-23 is great.) Even
with 7, the chain on the 14 comes close to rubbing the cage. (But that's
such a high gear (44/14X27=85) that I hardly ever use it.)

Question (serious one): how does the quality (as far as you can tell) and
the look of the VO crankset compare to the Pro 5 Vis?

On Mon, Jun 3, 2013 at 4:49 PM, Eric Norris campyonly...@me.com wrote:

I'm running a Velo Orange Grand Cru 50.4BCD crankset with a single
 chainring (

on my Quickbeam, and I'm at a loss to see how it would work if there was a
derailleur in the mix. Even an old-style Campy Record no lip front mech
wouldn't fit in the very small gap between the chain and the crankarm.

Mine is the first model, so perhaps they've addressed this issue in the
 MK II version.

at least with the small gap on the TA, it requires great precision in fd

Perhaps using a vintage derailleur of some kind might help?

out that the crank arm was just grazing the edge of the (Campy Triple) FD.

I went around the shop measuring all the cranks on my and my wives
 bikes. Here's what I got:

 Shimano 600 -10mm
 Alpina 11.5
 Ultegra 11.5
 White VBC - 15mm
 DaVinci - 15mm

Any suggestions, short of grinding the back of the arm?

It's satisfactory now and, frankly, even tho' my gears (44/30 X
14-15-16-17-18-20-23) give me between 85 and 35, most of my riding is in
the middle cogs (60-64-70-74 is such a lovely progression), so chain rub is
far less of even a potential issue. Putting 10 cogs on would definitely
make adjustment harder.

Oh, and 8 sp chain, btw.

126 mm bb? Mine is an asym 115 with the Ram's 132.5 rear spacing, and it
works fine. You must have a triple?

the SK 126mm. Everything dialed right in on the first try, and never had
 an adjustment squirm.

8.5mm sounds really really tight, because even the largest 9-speed chain
is 6.8mm - add the cage thickness, and that only gives you about 2mm
 adjustment freedom in the FD.
OK, I started measuring gaps. - my cyclotouriste has 10mm. Even my Campy
10-speed Centaur crank has a 12mm gap there.

And here's the kicker. My Nuovo Record crank would have 8.5 mm, but I
have recent TA chainrings on it,and it has a 10mm gap between the chainring
 and the crankarm.

good!

I found it linked to a MSO review I was reading. I think I'm down to the

One big thing not well represented on the list are 650B tires... we need

talk, and we found a nice view point to hang out for a snack and some
hanging out before heading back down. The Portland crew whipped up a
spaghetti dinner then we settled around the camp fire until well after
 dark.

In the morning the Seattle crew (aka Brian) was the first one up so he
got a fire going and cooked a big batch of eggs. After breakfast and
cleaning up around camp, Charlie had to head home, but the rest of us
headed out to investigate the snow level. We figured we'd eventually be
stopped by the snow and have to turn around. The snow ended up being mostly
melted. We got crazy close to making the connection to connect to our 40
mile loop. We implemented the Manny Principle (keep pressing forward
despite not really knowing what's up ahead and even though it's likely to
cause you to be late getting home). The loop turned out to include a
spectacular 5 mile descent down a jeep road. Following the ride we loaded
the bikes into the cars and headed our separate ways.

As for who won the Rumble… I't wasn't exactly clear. We were so
pre-occupied riding, telling stories, geeking out on bikes, and generally
having a great time that the Rumble part of it fell off the radar. Perhaps
we'll have to do it again and be more on top of it.

 interesting/spooky thing...

I'm a bike biz vet/refugee, wrenched at Fuji Cycle Center of NJ '80-'83,
then went to SunTour USA '84-'88, Maeda Kogyo/SunTour Japan '89-'90, Trek
Japan '90-'99, Fuji America '00-'01. I was bobbish when lugged steel and
wool/cotton was just about all that existed, then flirted with aluminum at
SunTour, then carbon at Trek. Started looking at steel again after trashing
my very first Trek OCLV frame on its maiden voyage, first or second front
shift dumped the chain and sawed through several critical layers of
chainstay carbon. I was honestly Just Riding Along (JRA). Frame was toast
and I started thinking maybe carbon wasn't a great bicycle frame material.

Started reading ibob, Grant/Riv and the Sheldon Chronicles, grew
increasingly disenchanted with aluminum/carbon. My steel epiphany/satori
was my first lunchtime ride on a '99/'00 Fuji Roubaix Pro, tig'd Reynolds
853, when I realized it was the rightest feeling bike I had ridden in
more than a decade. Dove back into steel in a big way, got rid of all my
non-ferrous steeds and haven't looked back.

So now I find myself an old cuss, fatter and weaker than ever, but I've
never been happier with my bikes. My love for lugged steel has been
rekindled (I'm also OK with fillet-brazed and even tig'd) and I seriously
jones for small-volume American handbuilt frames from the '70s-'80s---a
weird full-circle thing for me because some of these builders were
customers of mine or show-buddies from my SunTour days. I made it to NAHBS
in Richmond 2010 and Denver this year, also finally just made it to Cirque.
Left behind a period-correct components phase and now often run semi-modern
parts where it makes sense to me; also ride only spiky platform pedals
these days, no more foot retention.

Although my riding mileage is still pitifully low, it's generally on a
slow upswing. I re-connected with the Bicycle Touring Club of North Jersey
(BTCNJ), which had a couple hundred members in '82 and now has a couple
thousand, and getting back out on club rides has been fun. Not a lot of
steel out there, though, especially higher-end steel.

Took a few piccies of the Riv today, did a flattish 25mi fixed ride
w/500' of climbing, my legs are toast. Here's a small flickr set, you'll
also find some other bikes, and some overly-large sets from NAHBS 2013 and

Re: [RBW] Introduction

2013-06-03 Thread Paul Brodek
Thanks, Patrick. The Roubaix Pro had nothing on any Rivendell, but the
geometry was a bit more sport-tour than race, and it did just kind of
disappear underneath me like no aluminum or carbon bike had.
Those early Rivendells hearken back to a few decades of pre-crit classic
road bikes, which is my touchstone. Back in the day I didn't really know
rando-ish bikes existed, my only exposure was a few catalog pages in some
late-'70s Fuji Japan catalogs lying around the shop. There were some
French-inspired (I suppose?) rando/touring models in the lineup, and to my
eyes they could have been designed by Martians. There just seemed to be so
much darned stuff on them, everywhere, and I couldn't comprehend any of it.
My outlook has widened since then. When I look at a lot of the current
Rivs, I do grok them, I think they look cool, they even trigger a little
desire. But they don't quite resonate as deeply with me.
No matter, though, it's all good stuff, and it has been a pleasure watching
what Grant has accomplished as an independent entity, relatively
unleashed.
