[RBW] FS: F32 Rich-built wheel, MKS touring pedals with power grips, Kelly kettle

2014-02-10 Thread Brencho
Got a couple things for sale:

F32 Wheel, Velocity Dyad rim, Shimano LX hub, build by Rich Lesnik a bit
under 1 year ago: $150

MKS Touring pedal with tan colored power grips: $40

Kelly Kettle Scout. Brand new in box with pot stand: $70

I'll ship the pedals and kettle for a few extra buck, but the wheel I'd
rather stick to a bay area local exchange to avoid shipping.

Let me know!

[RBW] Chain Line

2014-02-10 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
I've got my Sam Hillborne set up as single speed at the moment, using a
track cog, spaced and rear derailler.
The setup looks straight enough to my eye, but it does rattle a bit. I'm
wondering if I've got the chain line a bit off or maybe the spacers are no
sufficiently tight.
How does one go about measuring chain line? I can't see a simple way to get
an accurate measurement with a ruler, what with all those pesky pieces of
metal in the way.

If it helps, I'm running a Sugino triple up front with 40/26/bashguard, 113
mm BB and a shimano 9 speed cassete hub. I use the 40T chainring pretty
much exclusively, as there is no FD installed.

Thanks,
Jay

[RBW] Re: Chain Line

2014-02-10 Thread blakcloud
I just eye ball it, If it looks straight it probably is.

Sheldon Brown has a great article on measuring
chainlinehttp://sheldonbrown.com/chainline.html.

If the chainline is off it doesn't rattle, it just makes some noise but it
has to be really off to do this. Typically 8/9 speed chains are quite
flexible side to side so you have lots of leeway.

These are the things that I would check.
Is your track cog 3/32 to match your chain.
If using a spacer kit is everything tight and snug including the lock ring.
Some spacer kits are better than others. I tend to like the ones that use a
bunch of spacers in different sizes so that you can mix and match to get
the lock ring on tight.
Check to see if the chain has enough lube.
You might want to eliminate the derailleur by using a half link in the
chain, sometimes you get lucky.

One product I really like is the Surly single speed cogs. They have a wide
base at the cassette. They are just better cogs than the stamped steel you
usually get with a spacer kit.

Hope you figure out what the sound is.

[RBW] Saved by Stans

2014-02-10 Thread Ron Mc
Posted to Michael on another thread about getting out over the weekend in
spite of mountain cedar pollen. Yesterday, took my go-fast Moser over to
my buddy's house to ride from there. We had a plan for a 35-mi ride, but
ended up cutting it short. About 8 miles from home we were following the
shoulder of a near-rural road that goes only to a park and military
reserve. I'm not sure what his plan was other than a pit stop at the park,
but I was following. Heard a new ping-ping-ping and immediately thought of
broken spoke. Instead found a piece of 14-ga bailing wire impaled in my
Parigi tubie. It was a little weird, because right when it happened I was
looking up the road at a bridge where I had picked up a piece of wire last
time we were on this road. Yes, I don't plan to ride this road again. It
made quite a hole, but I had a new bottle of Zap-a-gap, a 2-oz.Stans and a
Tufo valve core tool.
 http://www.biketiresdirect.com/product/tufo-valve-tool
After pulling the valve core, I opened the Zap-a-gap and filled the hole in
the tire. Note - I should have waited a few minutes, because I didn't
quite seal the cut in the tire, though did improve it - it was pretty big.
One ounce of Stans in the tire, and pump.
No question the white liquid latex was leaking through the puncture for
awhile, but after a few more minutes and borrowed air from an auto tire
store, it sealed up fine and got us home. So while the adventure cut our
ride it half, Stans was all the rescue we needed. I was actually trying to
get my last few miles out of this tubie anyway, and I guess that was
accomplished.
And I put my clinchers back on when I got to my house.

2014-02-10 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Thanks, Blakcloud.

I'm laughing at the term spacer kit. I raided a bunch of worn out
cassettes for spacers and a few cogs to fill in. I did the lockring like I
would for a cassette and it seems tight to me.
Cog is Shimano XTR, this one
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000R39902/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00?ie=UTF8psc=1
Chain is 9 speed and new. Cleaning and lubing yesterday helped a lot, but
it's still noicier than I would like.
I almost bought a used Melvin, but the seller backed out.

[RBW] stem length for Albastache

On the previous M-bars, if one were to use a technomic stem, it was
recommended to go short. Does that still ring true for the newer version

I think they come back a couple more inches. If one were to use a 7 cm
stem on the originals, what would the recommended stem length be on the
Albastaches?

The simple answer is that if it was 96 hours anyone could do it.

I think there is a a minimum speed you are expected to ride plus a minimum
number hours of sleep you are allotted and this adds up to 90 hours.

I have completed two 1200k Randonnees on my Rambouillet, BMB 2006 and PBP 2007.
It takes a huge commitment to train and qualify for a 1200k and life has
caught up with me for the last few years. This year I am in the hunt to do a
1000k and shoot for PBP next year and I will still be riding my Rambouillet.

[RBW] Re: Chain Line

2014-02-10 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
BMX single gear sprockets will fit onto a Shimano splined freehub.

It should run reasonably quiet, but if you have a derailleur in the mix to
maintain tension, it's not going to run silently. Also, if the chain has
been degreased and is a bit dry, it can tend to clatter a bit.

One thing I do is bring it up to speed in the stand and watch how it
releases from the front chainring and rear sprocket. Wear on the teeth
will tend to make the chain release later, which seems to increase noise.

hope that helps!

[RBW] Re: Chain Line

2014-02-10 Thread Jeremy Till
Measuring chainline on the rear cog can be tricky. My preferred method is
to put a straight edge of some kind across the locknut on the driveside and
measure the distance between the straight edge and the centerline of the
cog. Then, chainline=(Over locknut spacing of the rear hub)/2 minus
(distance between locknut and cog centerline)

Another reason that once I made the commitment that I enjoy SS/fixed
riding, I've vastly preferred to use dedicated fixed or SS hubs which have
a standardized chainline (usually 42mm for track hubs, 52mm for SS MTB
hubs). It's much easier to measure and dial in chainline at the front with
the proper crank/chainring/BB spindle length combination than at the rear.

The setup looks straight enough to my eye, but it does rattle a bit. I'm
wondering if I've got the chain line a bit off or maybe the spacers are no
 sufficiently tight.
How does one go about measuring chain line? I can't see a simple way to
get an accurate measurement with a ruler, what with all those pesky pieces
 of metal in the way.

If it helps, I'm running a Sugino triple up front with 40/26/bashguard,
113 mm BB and a shimano 9 speed cassete hub. I use the 40T chainring pretty
much exclusively, as there is no FD installed.

ended up cutting it short.
After pulling the valve core, I opened the Zap-a-gap and filled the hole
in the tire.
And I put my clinchers back on when I got to my house.

mostly-dirt loop up there. My new Krampus will prefer dirt to
pavement, unlike my beautiful Atlantis.

Any suggestions?

As soon I get my Krampus, it's going to start burning a hole in my
pocket. I'm thinking bikepacking in Henry Coe, bikepacking at the
trail camps in Big Basin, and definitely a return to GGNRA, this time
with the 3 Tires of Confidence to allow me to ride all those
singletracks and the disk Brakes of Confidence so I don't have to keep
replacing rims.

It isn't a contest. Enjoy the ride.

Re: [RBW] Re: Best Rainy footwear/boots

2014-02-10 Thread Shoji Takahashi
I use my hiking boots (old-style Vasque Sundowners) for cold and cold+wet.
In warmer conditions, I use the MUSA Splats, which work well, but are a bit
large for my shoes (Men's US10).

Anyone use gaiters? I'm thinking of getting a set for hiking and cycling.
The biggest problem for riding in heavy rain is water getting into my boots
or shoes, which maybe the gaiters could help alleviate. (I'd go for the
MUSA ShinShields, but I'd rather spring for rolls of Saran Wrap.)

[RBW] Re: Saved by Stans

2014-02-10 Thread Ron Mc
the beauty of it is exactly what I used it for - it makes a great flat kit
with the 3 basic components I described. I take this kit along with
clinchers as well, even with a spare tube - it's just nice to have the
option to seal the flat on the bike. I honestly was surprised this big
hole completely stopped leaking within 10 minutes or so.

Posted to Michael on another thread about getting out over the weekend
in spite of mountain cedar pollen. Yesterday, took my go-fast Moser over
to my buddy's house to ride from there. We had a plan for a 35-mi ride,
but ended up cutting it short. About 8 miles from home we were following
the shoulder of a near-rural road that goes only to a park and military
After pulling the valve core, I opened the Zap-a-gap and filled the hole
in the tire.

[RBW] OT: trade resume/LI work for website work?

2014-02-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Not wholly entirely completely OT since I've had a few list clients. Anyway:

I need some very simple text changes to my website. I also may add a photo.
I'd like the help of an experienced and talented web tuner in exchange for
expert resume or LI help. My resume + LI package costs $800*, which is for
the quality of the work provided cheaper than many other sources. So, that
on one side of the balance.

Anyone?

Please reply off list -- DO NOT simply click reply because that will post
to the list. Email me at:

patrickmo...@resumespecialties.com

Thanks.

*I am presently considering new pricing; just for the record. $1K for
resume, letter, LI profile, to bring my prices to current levels.

Re: [RBW] Re: Best Rainy footwear/boots

2014-02-10 Thread Tim Gavin
+1 for gore-tex hikers. The lighter-weight ones are just dressed up
sneakers, and will last you about as long. Quality boots are generally
heavier, but can last forever. Like a Rivendell.

I wear my Belleville gore-tex combat boots when it's cold rainy. I was
issued 3 different pair, so that's the cheap easy solution for me. But
they may be found at surplus stores, usually for less than most other
gore-tex hiking boots. And all US gear is MUSA.

Another MUSA option: Red Wing boots (you can filter their website by
country of origin!). I have a pair of 953's I've had for 20 years (I'm 36,
so my entire adult life) that are almost as comfortable as sneakers. Any
quality leather boot can be made reasonably waterproof with enough
Newbaum's, or silicone creme. The current Chukka or Moc Toe boots could
make great all-rounder shoes for wet weather. Think of them as Brooks,
fenders, and Marathons for your feet. :) (Red Wing owns Irish Setter and
Vasque as well)

[RBW] FS: 58 Rambouillet Green complete bike - $1400 shipped - bump and price drop

Some tire kicking but nothing solid so far.

$50 off for local SF Bay Area sales.

Open to parting out if someone is interested in the frame or some group of

Thanks for looking!

After lots of pondering I have decided to offer up my green 2006 58cm
Ram for sale.

Need to thin the herd and prep for an unexpected arrival in 6.5 months
or so. Not a bicycle arrival, either.

It is a great bike. Nice but not perfect shape. Beausage but not too
much. No dents. I bought the bike from the first owner - time to move
it forward with a few upgrades.

Some original and some new parts. I had just gotten into replacing the
bar tape and brake levers when I made the decision so decided to leave
the brake cables bar wrap for the new owner to complete. I am
including new brake cables/ black housing and a package of the natural
cork tape from RBW to complete things. The brake housing run from the rear
TT
stop to the rear brake is fine and recent so I am leaving that as is.

Here are the build details:

58 cm Rambouillet:

Mavic Open Pro / Ultegra hubs
Grand Bois Cypres 30 tires - recent
Ultegra headset
Origin 8 brake levers (Tektro R340) - new
Tektro R539 brakes - recent
Shimano 105 triple front Der
Deore LX rear der
Sugino triple crankset 48/36/26
Shimano HG-61 11-34 cassette - recent
Shimano 9-speed chain - recent
Shimano 9-speed bar ends - indexes properly if you want to go that way.
Nitto Noodles 46cm
Nitto Technomic Deluxe stem 8cm
Nitto 65 seatpost

Not including the saddle, pedals/clips, or bottle cages.

I am including an extra pair of new in package GB Cypres 30 tires. So 4
tires total.

[RBW] Re: Loving Tributes to Betty Foy

2014-02-10 Thread grrlyrida
Six years ago I went to Riv HQ and rode a Betty Foy for half the day. It
was one of the best experiences I've had at a bike shop. I guess I was
hanging around so long and riding every size of the Betty Foy that I met
Grant and he said I should get the larger size. I didn't want to leave. I
never bought a Betty Foy. I bought a custom Riv mixte instead. But I
remember what a smooth enjoyable ride that Betty was. I was smiling while I
rode around Walnut Creek. I was a Riv convert before I rode Betty, but
afterward I became a devotee.

On Saturday, February 8, 2014 6:58:58 PM UTC-8, Cecily Walker wrote:

I've read many loving tributes to Sams, Hilsens, Hunqapillars and other

Lovely Bicycle's faint praise, and I've read and re-read the posts (and
seen the videos) from the women of Let's Go Ride a Bike, but I've always
found it odd that there isn't a lot out there about the history of the
Betty Foy, the fun people have had in the saddle, or musings about what the
Foy has meant to the lucky woman (or man) who owns one. Even Rivendell's
site is scant when it comes to copy about the Foy, saying only that you can
do equally well on a Betty Foy what you can do on a Sam. That's the
equivalent of saying Yeah, so's your sister.

And now that Betty Foy (and her brother Yves) are nearing the end of their
model lives, I fear that I'll never learn all there is to learn, or read
all there is to read about this bike that I've come to love so much. Unless
I write it myself, of course...

Feeling thinky on a Saturday night,
 Cecily

[RBW] Re: Chain Line

2014-02-10 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Thanks for all the input.
I tried the magic gear thing and couldn't make it work. Looking at the
calculator, I think I now understand why. It shows my 40/16 gear as a
perfect match with a 100 link chain and the Sam's 45.5 cm chain stays, as
long as there is zero (0) chain stretch. It's way off with just 0.05 inches
of stretch over 12 inches of chain.

On Monday, February 10, 2014 7:18:10 PM UTC+2, Jeremy Till wrote:

Measuring chainline on the rear cog can be tricky. My preferred method is
to put a straight edge of some kind across the locknut on the driveside and
measure the distance between the straight edge and the centerline of the
cog. Then, chainline=(Over locknut spacing of the rear hub)/2 minus
(distance between locknut and cog centerline)

Another reason that once I made the commitment that I enjoy SS/fixed
riding, I've vastly preferred to use dedicated fixed or SS hubs which have
a standardized chainline (usually 42mm for track hubs, 52mm for SS MTB
hubs). It's much easier to measure and dial in chainline at the front with
the proper crank/chainring/BB spindle length combination than at the rear.

 sufficiently tight.
How does one go about measuring chain line? I can't see a simple way to
get an accurate measurement with a ruler, what with all those pesky pieces

[RBW] Re: FS: 58 Rambouillet Green complete bike - $1400 shipped - bump and price drop

2014-02-10 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
This would be perfect for me if I needed a bike at the moment. As it is I
already have as many as I can (am allowed to) fit in my apartment.
I would have thought this to be an easy sale though.

Good luck, and enjoy the baby.

After lots of pondering I have decided to offer up my green 2006 58cm
 Ram for sale.

Need to thin the herd and prep for an unexpected arrival in 6.5 months
or so. Not a bicycle arrival, either.

It is a great bike. Nice but not perfect shape. Beausage but not too
much. No dents. I bought the bike from the first owner - time to move
it forward with a few upgrades.

Some original and some new parts. I had just gotten into replacing the
bar tape and brake levers when I made the decision so decided to leave
the brake cables bar wrap for the new owner to complete. I am
including new brake cables/ black housing and a package of the natural
cork tape from RBW to complete things. The brake housing run from the rear
 TT
stop to the rear brake is fine and recent so I am leaving that as is.

 Here are the build details:

 58 cm Rambouillet:

Mavic Open Pro / Ultegra hubs
Grand Bois Cypres 30 tires - recent
 Ultegra headset
Origin 8 brake levers (Tektro R340) - new
 Tektro R539 brakes - recent
 Shimano 105 triple front Der
 Deore LX rear der
 Sugino triple crankset 48/36/26
 Shimano HG-61 11-34 cassette - recent
 Shimano 9-speed chain - recent
Shimano 9-speed bar ends - indexes properly if you want to go that way.
 Nitto Noodles 46cm
 Nitto Technomic Deluxe stem 8cm
 Nitto 65 seatpost

Not including the saddle, pedals/clips, or bottle cages.

I am including an extra pair of new in package GB Cypres 30 tires. So 4
 tires total.

[RBW] SKS P55 fenders

2014-02-10 Thread Michael Williams
Hey group, I have a question. I have a set of the SKS P55 fenders and
run them with 650bx 42mm tires, is there any reason I just cant extend the
stays a little and run a 700x 45 tire under there on a different bike. On
the Riv site and the SKS site they recommend the P50s for for 700x45 and
the P55s are specifically for 26 wheels/tires. I would think you would
just be able to extend the stays a little. Thank you in advance. -Mike

Re: [RBW] SKS P55 fenders

2014-02-10 Thread Tim Gavin
That's a pretty big difference in tire size.
650b x 42 mm = 668 mm diameter
700c x 45mm = 712 mm diameter

Difference of 44mm diameter, 22mm radius. So you'd have to extend the
stays 22mm. You probably don't have that much extra length on the stays.

With longer stays, you probably could make the P50s fit; they're pretty
flexible. But if you're buying new stays you might as well buy new fenders.

[RBW] Re: SKS P55 fenders

2014-02-10 Thread Jeremy Till
The SKS fender size isn't just a matter of the stay length but also the
radius at which the fender is curved. The SKS fenders designed for 26
wheels make a tighter circle than the ones designed for 700c wheels. Of
course, SKS fenders are relatively forgiving in that they can be flexed to
fit more than metal fenders, but too much inbuilt stress can still cause
them to crack and I think that such a modification would mean that they
would fatigue fairly quickly.

[RBW] Re: stem length for Albastache

2014-02-10 Thread stonehog
J - I would go short with Albastaches, as well. They come back a bit more
than the originals, but it's not as noticeable a difference as the width -
maybe only a cm or two. They are more stretched out width-wise, which
gives more leverage, and more hand positions. I use the 10cm Dirt Drop
stem, and it works great. I would use a shorter technomic, but the real
deal is to measure where you want to be based on where you will be holding
on most of the time, and getting the right stem for your needed fit. I
mostly hold on near where the bar starts the curve, but still on the swept
back end. Great bars, BTW - I like them better than the Albatross due to
the ability to stretch out and have a more natural angle when I'm in the
hooks of the bar.

I think they come back a couple more inches. If one were to use a 7 cm
stem on the originals, what would the recommended stem length be on the
 Albastaches?

Cecily, I can't say enough, get whatever bike makes you comfortable out in

is just magical. You don't have to get a full on North Shore approved bike,
but that is your neighborhood! You would be amazed what a solid 90's MTB

It's partly paved and partly unpaved. There are good BLM maps of the area

also the Paradise Royale loop, which was built by mountain bikers and

Saw this movie tonight, not as good as I was hoping but still entertaining.
The important thing for this forum though is that there are several prominent
bicycle scenes in WWII occupied France... Stupid things I never would have
taken much note if 2 years ago! The bikes always get rather roughly dismounted
and tossed around... But it's cool that a hi profile movie like this portrays
how important bikes were at that time in Europe.

I'll tease one other tidbit... Guess who stopped in at Waterford Precision

I love riding in the dirt. I was surprised by how much I loved it, but
maybe I shouldn't have been - before my osteoarthritis got really bad, I
used to love trail running, too.

I think with a different set of wheels/tires, Betty could take me on most
of the trails I'd be happiest on in the area, but I'm pretty sure she isn't
North Shore ready. To be honest, I'm not sure I am, either. But I do love a

site is scant when it comes to copy about the Foy, saying only that you
 can
do equally well on a Betty Foy what you can do on a Sam. That's the

And now that Betty Foy (and her brother Yves) are nearing the end of

Right. That was the route we were planning to take, and I had pored
over that very website. But when we got there it turned out to be
pouring down rain (the only rainstorm all year) and we didn't think
our smooth touring tires were up to the job. That's still the route I
want to take, down the Lost Coast. What I want to know is how to get
back again without backtracking. Something to the east of Highway 1,
perhaps? I'd like to avoid the section ON Highway 1-- there's quite a
nasty narrow twisty section in the southerly part with lots of
traffic. It's a country road, but with freeway traffic, so it's
unpleasant and dangerous.

Here's a work-in-progress itinerary for Rivfest:
2 nights China Camp/1 night on Mt Diablo -- I will reserve campgrounds and
send a link for some non-camping lodging. China Camp should be pleasant.
Diablo could be 90+ temperatures, so I'm thinking camp high on the mountain
for the view and breeze.

I'm thinking group dinners all 3 nights (I've got at least 2 volunteer
cooks so far), but bring your own breakfast/beer/bourbon/Oban.

Rides of varying gruel factor led by Manny and some other
as-yet-to-be-identified volunteers (I'm hoping our listmaster can lead a
ride; Marin's his turf.).

I'll also point out that not only is this Riv's 20th, but it is also a
decade-marking anniversary for Grant. Maybe one ride will go by Grant's
house and we can serenade him.

So how about some input, por favor. Volunteers welcome too.

This is a follow up to yesterday's albatross related post. Since I am
taking my noodles off my CC to add the albas I'm gonna move the
interrupters that are installed there over to my Samuel Hillborne where I
also have noodles installed and mated to 10 cm dirt drops. Sooo I need to
remove the Mark wrapped and shellacked twine. I'm sure I could figure it
out but would rather not take any pokey things to my riv and just go off of
collective wisdom. Also, if anyone has two arm lengths if hemp twine
lying around please consider sending it to me in exchange for some
interesting surprise trade. I'm trying to have less stuff and just
getting your scrap twine would help. Thanks in advance!

It sounds good to me. I live in San Rafael and am happy to help facilitate from

2 nights China Camp/1 night on Mt Diablo -- I will reserve campgrounds and

Diablo could be 90+ temperatures, so I'm thinking camp high on the mountain
 for the view and breeze.

I'm thinking group dinners all 3 nights (I've got at least 2 volunteer cooks
so far), but bring your own breakfast/beer/bourbon/Oban.

Maybe one ride will go by Grant's house
 and we can serenade him.

So how about some input, por favor. Volunteers welcome too.

 happy winter

Last summer a buddy and I did a trip down the Northern California
coast. We planned to include the Lost Coast, but unluckily, we managed
to be riding during the only rainstorm of 2013, and our smooth tires

I still want to ride the Lost Coast. But now, I'm looking for a
mostly-dirt loop up there.
