[RBW] Re: steps to mount a tire / tubeless is easy?

2020-04-16 Thread Joe Bernard
" Now I can't quote anybody saying tubeless setup is trivial and as easy as
using tubes, but I feel like some proponents sort of imply something close to
that. Am I wrong?"

You're implying that "proponents" are implying this with no quotes to back up
your implication. What *I* got from James' tutorial was if you want to go
tubeless, there's an initial setup you can learn which then shouldn't hardly
ever be repeated because you won't be removing tires to fix a flat. And he did
it with a floor pump.

I don't think anyone has to accept it as The Only Way, but it sure appeals to
me now that I feel I understand it.

[RBW] Re: steps to mount a tire / tubeless is easy?

2020-04-16 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'd add: hassle of a field flat with latex goop and tube (unless hauling a
compressor). I've dealt with goop in a tube and that was bad enough for me.
But I only get 2-4 flats a year.

Patrick

Hey Conway!

How does 35 shipped sound? I was going to buy them new the other day but
figured I’d ask the group first. I think they are usually 40 or so? Let me know
if I’m off-base though.

Thanks

I don't use the soapy water, mounted a tubeless tire the other night without a
single drop dripped. Not that it's easier than tubes, but it's not telemetry

[RBW] steps to mount a tire / tubeless is easy?

2020-04-16 Thread ted
Someone I won't name, because he should be gratefully honored for his
contributions and definitely never hectored about such trivia, wrote he
could think of at least 11 steps to mounting a tube in a tire off the top
of his head.

I only think of 10.
Put a layer of rim tape on the rim
Put one bead of the tire on the rim down in the well
Put talc on the tube or the inside surface of the tire.
Put just enough air in the tube to give it some shape
Put the tube inside the tire and around the rim (with the valve through
the hole of course)
Push the other bead of the tire onto the rim and down into the well
Make sure the tube isn't stuck under a tire bead anyplace
   Inflate to seat the beads
Make sure the beads are seated
Reduce pressure to what you ride

What am I missing?

Now for tubeless its (assuming no difficulties/hiccups)
Put n layers of tubeless rim tape on the rim
Install the valve stem, pull the core
Slather soapy water al over the place
Put the tire on the rim
Use a compressor to blow air through the valve body to seat the tire
(may spray soapy water about doing this)
Put sealant in through the valve
Put the valve core back in
Inflate the tire (may have sealant spraying about doing this)
Check that sealant isn't coming out around the bead
Spin the wheel a few times
Let it sit overnight (reminds me of gluing tubulars)
Re-inflate to riding pressure because it probably got soft overnight

Now I'll agree that that doesn't sound too bad, only a dozen steps. I also
agree that anyone who works on stuff, and has a shop or a garage, should
get a compressor. Well worth the investment (can you say air tools, fun).
But with the potential for spraying soapy water and/or sealant about, and
the risk of significant difficulty seating/sealing the beads etc, I don't
see how an honest appraisal can really conclude its not significantly more
trouble than installing tires with tubes. Kinda like gluing tubulars. Now I
can't quote anybody saying tubeless setup is trivial and as easy as using
tubes, but I feel like some proponents sort of imply something close to
that. Am I wrong?

[RBW] Re: WTB: 66 or 68cm Quickbeam frame set

2020-04-16 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Och! Isaac, my heart goes out to you. I found a new way to (attempt) to go
tubeless with my Hunqapillar: my drive-side chain stay broke in a way
neither Grant nor Mark N. has ever seen before (figures: I get that a
lot.). I still need to clear the parts from the frame and clean it so they
can see what may have happened, but with fixing and paint et al, it is
pricy. So, you are not alone in your simultanious woe that the frame broke
and delight that it was well loved and steel so broke in a way that loved
you too. Grin.

2020-04-16 Thread Joe Bernard
Well I can't help ya with your concerns about "tubeless proponent", I started
on the side of not wanting to ever bother with the damn things again. I'm not
now suddenly a tubeless evangelist who thinks all tubed tires are evil, I'm
just trying to learn and be open to new stuff that might work for me.

As of today all my bikes have tubes, including a Frank Jones with 700 x 38
Compass Barlow Pass and lightweight tubes. It rides like buttah and I'll
probably get flats. I can fix them.

Re: [RBW] Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-16 Thread ted
Sorry, I guess I'm just too dense to grasp implicit assumptions in 160 post
threads that wander about a bit. Some of the recent posts have an ok boomer
feel with a side of righteous certainty about the absolute superiority of
tubeless over tubes the denial of which could only be explained by the
stubborn crotchetyness of the denier.

If the assertion is that you can get a virtually flat free experience with
a tubeless setup that is lighter and rides nicer than an uber stout
impenetrable tire (thereby assuring a similarly flat fee experience) and
tube, well yea I guess I get that.

I wish all tubeless proponents should take a tip form P. Moore and stick
with something like:
Hey you want imperviousness to goatheads without riding tires that have a
quarter inch of latex under the tread? Then try tubeless.

In the context of who started the thread, do you really think Leah has to
worry about pinch flats on her Clem?
I bet she weighs less than i do, and she has room for fatter tires than any
bike I own. No pinch flats is at best specious here.

Now can somebody point me to a 650b 38mm tire that rolls as easily as a
Compass/RH extra light that won't weep sealant through the sidewalls if I
set it up tubeless?

Re: [RBW] Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-16 Thread bruce.herbit...@gmail.com
I helped a local friend spec her Clem L purchase recently, and we went with
upgraded lighter Velocity wheels and the Conti "Basketball" tires instead of
the usual Schwalbe rubber.  The bike is of course not light, but it rolls like
a dream and she (an oboe player in her 60s) cruised a hilly loop today (17
miles, 1,200') and was NOT the last person in (all spaced out 100' or more)
So, tubeless may have some benefit, but there are good, ligher choices with
conventional set-ups too. To quote  Queen, "Get on yer bikes and ride!"

[RBW] Free Clinic Schedule on Instagram Live

2020-04-16 Thread James / Analog Cycles
Join the fun. Our first clinic had about 160 different people stop in, and
I learned that I shouldn't repeat questions! Joining the clinics is super
easy. Follow @analogcycles on instagram, and in the stories section,
you'll see our name with a glowy glowy ring around it when the clinic goes
live. You can ask ?s by typing them out, and we'll answer them as best we
can. You can only do a live feed for 30 minutes, but if we're not
finished, we'll pause while we restart, and wait a few for folks to
rejoin.

Please feel free to offer suggestions for clinics or talks. All clinics
will start at 8pm EST so more folks can watch.

4/20/2020: We don't smoke weed, so why not have a clinic on 4/20? Candice
will show you how to wrap handlebar tape. She's demo it on a tape that
requires a bit more from the person wrapping it, so if you get this
technique, you can do ANY tape. She'll also cover twining the end,
benefits of different types of tape, and the mysteries of GEL... This was a
submitted idea.

4/22: Drivetrain cleaning and lubing, the Analog way. I'd say most folks
are either doing it wrong or are trying to hard, or both. Come watch our
simple presentation on drivetrain cleaning and lubing. We'll also cover
cleaning rims and rotors. Notice: our way to do it is fast, simple and
affordable. No tricks, no special tools.

4/27: Headset and bottom bracket installation. We'll do a few different
types, and talk about bear preload and maintenance and why Chris King
headsets are over rated. Submitted idea.

4/29: Normal derailleur adjustment. Front and Rear. We'll also talk
about cables and housing, installation.

5/4: 1x derailleur adjustment. Also talk about chain tension, chain
length, quick links.

5/6: Open! Who wants to come up with something

5/11: What goes into frame prep? A talk by Candice about how she preps
frames before building them. Not a clinic so much as a, hey look this is a
lot of work but it's important, talk.

We'll keep going as long as people are stuck indoors, or if it just stays
popular. Maybe go back to one a week once COVID lets people get outside
more.

Let us know what you want to see!

James / Analog Cycles / Tanglefoot Cycles / Discord Components / Fifth
Season Canvas.

Re: [RBW] WTB: 66 or 68cm Quickbeam frame set

2020-04-16 Thread S
Yes, it's a good deal. I emailed with Will at Riv about it and he wrote
back that as long as they can find the blueprints, Mark Nobilette can build
most any past frame in a standard size for that price. In the case of the

[RBW] Seen on the road: A fire engine red Rivendell step through

2020-04-16 Thread Bill Lindsay
I was on a leisurely ride on my Roadeo in the East Bay hills yesterday
evening. There were lots of folks out. Among the bikes I saw there were
quite a few Rivish and a few genuine Rivendells. One was a bright fire
engine red Rivendell Glorious. Given the obsession that BBDD has shared
for a red Rivendell step through, it got my attention.

Re: [RBW] Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-16 Thread Joe Bernard
Yes, you can ride lighter/plusher tires at lower pressure with tubeless for a
similar 'no flatting' result than what something like a Schwalbe with a tube
and puncture protection would offer. Sure, if you're light yourself and want to
ride thin tires with thin tubes then maybe the benefits are negated. I believe
we're talking about flat protection, too, in the context of this conversation
and who started the thread.

Re: [RBW] Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-16 Thread ted
"But the reality is tubeless has weight and tire advantages that are
noticeable on a ride, ..."

I keep reading assertions like this, but I don't see how its true.
Re weight:
I have two 650b bikes. One is tubeless the other has tubes. The tubes I use
are 108gr (aka 3.8oz) schwalbe SV14 extralight. I presume my tubeless tires
have 3oz of sealant in them. Apparently I should add 2oz to each tire after
6 month or so. I don't see how there is a weight savings here. Certainly
nothing noticeable.
Re tire advantages (meaning better ride?)
If you are big/heavy enough that you are forced to use higher pressure than
you otherwise would to avoid pinch flats ok fine. But that is not my
situation, and I suspect it is not a factor for a lot of riders.

The only advantage of tubeless that I believe is real is not flatting when
pierced by thorns or staples/wires etc.

Re: [RBW] WTB: 66 or 68cm Quickbeam frame set

2020-04-16 Thread Birdman
Thanks for the good points and resources above.

The 66cm Quickbeam is a rare bird indeed. This particular one has been well
cared for and seems to have relatively few miles, considering it's age.
Like many here, I have several Rivs and other bicycles; the Quickbeam is my
favorite ride. On top of that, after many years of reading the Reader and
drooling over the website, the Quickbeam (an orange 64), bought new in
2010, was my first Rivendell, so there is a great deal of sentimental value
involved. If I can get the BB shell replaced with fresh paint and new QB
decals for around $1000 total, I may go for it. There isn't anything on the
market today that can replace it and my Bantam custom (someday) will not be
a SS.

I'm thinking pink, like Mark's custom...

2020-04-16 Thread S
You can buy a new Mark Nobilette built Quickbeam frame, in any original
size, from Riv for $3,000. Same frame, same ride, much better workmanship.

If the repair and paint cost, say, $1,200 or less, then I might do it, but
above that price I think OP might want to consider putting the money toward
a down payment on a new frame, especially as the brazing quality on the
original Quickbeams seems poor in general.

I don't recall ever reading an opinion by Grant regarding tubeless vs.

"tubeless ready" rims these days do not come with brake tracks...though
some must. Pacenti. Probably others, for the short term anywho.

I think the argument James is presenting applies to folks like me, a 57yo guy

As I've expressed before (probably in this thread, definitely on this forum), I

But the reality is tubeless has weight and tire advantages that are noticeable

Well, Mark you read that correctly; back in the day I read articles Grant wrote
promoting the idea that one could ride skinny tires offroad and you didn't
really need big fat tires.

That's true, but big fat tires do make it more enjoyable. 

So, yes the new hilly bikes and even the Clems are really throwbacks to 25
years ago. That's not an indictment, those were great bikes/times and I'd like
to go back to that time if I could!

Just sayin; progress happens.

2020-04-16 Thread christian poppell
I would agree that the cost of repairs is high if the frame in question was
a stock, in production frame. The Quickbeam however is a fairly rare bird
and I would argue that it has no contemporary in the current market,
especially in this larger size (66-68 cm). I bet the cost of the repair
would be less than a new custom frame built around the same Quickbeam
specs. In the end, the custom option might not have the same ride quality
of the Quickbeam you are trying to replace. This is possible with the
repair as well but there are far fewer variables.

With regards to brazing quality on these frames, I own a 64cm orange and I
can see gaps where the brazing material does not fill the lug to the
shoreline. This is visible on the head tube downtube joint (downtube
socket), and the bottom bracket (seat tube socket). Both areas are about
1cm in width at the shoreline. The DT/HT joint appears to have more filler
closer to the shoreline than the one at the BB. FWIW

Please go through the webshop to purchase - checkout process uses Paypal

What I like is the single mounted cantilever in the photos -- other than
the headset there are no other parts on the frame, just the one lonely
cantilever arm and seller says "Caliper pictured is not included."
Sort of a post-modern art statement. Ha!

Oh... it looks like the price is now a low, low $1695

The seller has a variety of "optimistically" priced frames and parts listed
($500 for an old Schwinn cruiser fork!) but they did recently sell
a Rosco Bubbe frame for $1379.99 -- so...

[RBW] Clem H + Xtracycle

2020-04-16 Thread Bones
Not sure if this has been discussed here or not, but I'd like to hear
people's thoughts on this. I spent all of last year carrying both of my
kids on my Appaloosa (one in front, one in back). They are getting too big
for that setup now. Though I can still handle the bike with ease, I think
80lbs is a bit too much for the bike, and it is only going to get worse. So
my options, so far as I can see, are the following:

1) Get a bike trailer (Burley or Thule or whatnot)
2) Big Dummy or Big Fat Dummy.
3) Add an Xtracycle to my Clem H

I like the idea of using the Clem the most because I really don't want to
bring another bike or trailer into the house if I can help it, and I really
like the Clem. So far it has been used as a trail bike, and with a few
small children around, that means it doesn't get used that often. And that
is a job my Appaloosa can easily fill. I have no experience with the
Xtracycle leap kit though, so any suggestions here would be greatly
appreciated!

[RBW] Re: Analog Cycles: Free Tubeless Clinic on Instagram Live

2020-04-16 Thread j.schwartz
Maybe headset installs and maintenance? also BB install and removal.
 (also the associated tools needed)
I guess most people on this list are using threaded headsets and sq.tape
bb's.
It's sort of the last frontier of home mechanics since the frames often
come with the headsets and bottom brackets installed.

[RBW] Re: First(ish) impressions of Sam Hillborne

2020-04-16 Thread j.schwartz
looks pretty much perfect. Congrats.
I've had a few Rivs come in and out of my life and currently have 4 (Sam,
Joe, Clem, SimpleOne)
The only one that I've never thought about moving on is my very first Riv.
 A 2009 first generation 56cm Sam.
If I only kept one bike, that would be it.

[RBW] WTB: Small Clem L, Cheviot, or other Riv Step-Thru or Mixte

2020-04-16 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I know this is a long shot considering the popularity of these bikes in
these sizes, but we're looking for a Riv step-thru or mixte (frame or
complete) for my wife who is ~5'4". A 45 cm Clem L would be ideal,
obviously, but we'd also consider a 50 cm Chev or one of the older
step-thru or mixte frames in similar size (Clementine, Glorious, Yves
Gomez, etc.).

Anybody got something they've been thinking of selling or leads on online
shops that might have something in stock? Riv is all sold out of the above
mentioned and no clue when the next shipment of Clem or Cheviot frames will
land. I've even thought about building up a Soma Buena Vista but not crazy
about the color options and overall aesthetics compared to a Riv. Let me
know if you have any other recommendations? Thanks!

John,

Congratulations on acquiring a Sam. They do rock! Love mine. Only wish it
had canti brakes.

What saddle bag are you using?

[RBW] Re: Analog Cycles: Free Tubeless Clinic on Instagram Live

2020-04-16 Thread James / Analog Cycles
Hey thanks to everyone who showed up yesterday evening. We had a really
good turn out. Thanks to Leah for putting it together. Now that I can
post in real time, I'll be able to easily add more clinics. Holler with
ideas, we'll try to get to them all. Right now we are thinking:

   - How to wrap bars / shellac / twine. It's easy, but we'll break it
down so you KNOW it's easy.
   - Basic wheel truing
   - Basic derailleur adjustments
   - Adjusting Canti brakes and installing new pads
   - Adjusting mechanical disc brakes, truing rotors
   - Adjusting V brakes, installing new pads
   - Clean your drivetrain and re oil
   - Drop bar and saddle set up
   - Customize your cloth handlebar tape

We can also do talks on things, rather than just clinics, IE geometry
talks, fitting talks, gearing, wheel building, loading your bike, ways to
make bad coffee taste good, top 5 melvins albums, early american gardens,
etc.

I'm thinking we'll push the clinics back to 8pm so folks out west can more
easily join in. Probably try to do two a week, Mondays and Wednesdays.

Again, this makes it sound as though Grant is stuck in the past but, given
enough time, will eventually come around to see the light. However, just as
an artist might use oil paint her whole career, even as her style develops
and changes, a bicycle designer's approach to designing bicycles will also
change and develop, though the basic ingredients remain essentially the
same. Hilly bikes are the product of a long career thinking about and
designing bicycles, not a new technology in and of themselves. (And,
ironically in this context, harken back to the mountain bike designs of the
1980s. So what you are saying in a sense is, it took him 25 years to go
back to where the cutting edge of bicycle design was 35 years ago!;^)*

*Obviously HilliBikes are more than just a revival of vintage mountain
bikes, and riding my Clem L is a different experience than riding my 1980s
Trek 830 or Peugeot Express, but that certainly is the foundation, the
inspirational jumping off point.

will say my rack light that is battery operated is ok, but it’s cheap plastic

Peter White Cycles (https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/lightingsystems.php) is
really the place to look for solid lighting, both battery and generator style.
My 1st good light was an Ixon IQ from there many years ago. I like Dinotte
lights best personally, in the battery style. Their proprietary rechargeable
units go a long time and are very bright. Even their older stuff is good. I
bought an old Dinotte headlamp from Eric "Campy Only" on this list a while
back. It uses 4 AA cells. I ordered 2900 ma rechargeable batteries and a
couple of extra AA holders. I can swap out on long rides, but on a typical 1
1/2 to 2 hr ride don't need to. Generator hubs are now available with very low
friction drag. You can also use a solar power set up on one of your racks to
run/charge.
