Will you be naming "Naked Appaloosa" Lady Godiva? (Sorry, it had to be
said.)

But yes, I was impressed with RBW's attention to details. I got a complete

remember a million little things (this is the second time I've put together

Everyone else:

Thanks for the congrats and good wishes! I guess it's not a coincidence
that the bike arrived at the same day my therapist told me that I had more
or less completed my grief journey. Seriously good timing, RBW.

Jeremy-

The grips are Ergon grips (GP1, I think). I love the look of shellaced
corks but NC is notoriously humid and sweaty palms are always a hazard,
plus I never quite figured out how to make cork grips not move/slip out.
Ergon grips are the only ones that are grippy, easy to clean, and fairly
easy to install. They're even a bit cushy.

Fenders and racks are definitely on the list. Or at least a small saddlebag
with the tools and spare tubes. I'm also thinking that maybe a sturdier
rack would be good for carrying 6-packs...

Evan-
I think it's a cross between sam hillborne blue (closer to sky blue) and
atlantis aqua green-blue. It's not the same blue as Betty Foy, I think, but
somewhere in the same family. Those frames aligned together would probably
make for an interesting paint chip sheet.

Re: [RBW] Re: Saddle Advice Needed, Especially From the Riv Chica Warriors

2016-03-19 Thread Eunice Chang
Hi Cecily,

Yay on riding your bike again! I know that feeling well!

I haven't ridden much in the winter (and late fall), so when I went back to
riding, I was definitely a bit saddle sore. But my recovery was like 1-2
days, provided I kept on riding everyday. Like you, most of my riding is
short- anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes to my destination.

However, I don't know if this would be helpful or not, but I have generally
found Brooks women's saddles to be more uncomfortable than men's saddles. I
can barely tolerate Brooks women's B17 but am very comfortable in a men's
B17 (my favorite saddle). I can tolerate women's B67 but I have to remember
to keep the nose up or I slide off it. Brooks Flyer in men's size is
another okay-ish saddle for me- not as comfortable as men's B17, but
definitely far more preferable than women's. I suspect it may be a YMMV
thing, and there's probably a lot other factors going on (for example, the
women's saddles were probably not broken in, but the men's were).

And if it helps here's the saddle/tire/bike combo:
men's B17 // nomad resist 700 x 45 // AHH
women's B67 // hetres 650b // custom mixte
men's Flyer // panaracer pasela 700 x 32 // Quickbeam

All on Albatross bars and relatively similar saddle height.

Also, my pain tolerance is crazily high, so you might not want to listen to
me. I was riding uncomfortably on that women's B17 with the worst handlebar
position ever (lots of stress on wrists) for about 17 miles in 97%
humidity. On the other hand, I did get to ride on the tandem again as a
stoker in the cool summer night, under the stars, so it was worth every
mile and ouchie, but...

[RBW] Oops, I did it again: 2016 bike calendar

2015-12-08 Thread Eunice Chang
Hi all,

Thought this might be of interest to the list:

I made another calendar featuring mostly Riv bikes (AHH and quickbeam) for
2016. Proceeds go to Bike Durham, a local bike advocacy group. Here's the
link if you want to see the calendar and order one.

https://squareup.com/market/justshiny/bike-calendar-1

Just for folks on this list (because you are good enablers and I thought
I'd return the favor), there is a discount ($5 off calendar plus free
shipping). The code is:
ENJOYTHERIDE

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: The Mysterious Homer

2015-11-12 Thread Eunice Chang
I sort-of inherited a 61 cm Homer that I named Thumper Buttercup.

My only problem with it was that it rode so well and beautifully that it
practically sang, and got me to buy another Rivendell, a QB. So that's my
warning about Rivs, it's a slippery slope and then it's like trying to pick
your favorite child when you go to your bike stable. First world problems,
I know.

But seriously, it's a great all-rounder - I've used it for short distance,
long distance, errands with heavy loads, being a lousy ride leader (I kind
of left my followers behind). It's my most comfortable bike in the stable.
And it grows on you- and I suspect like most of us who have AHH, it becomes
a part of us.

And it's very, very photogenic. Here's proof:

Re: [RBW] Darning wool socks

2015-10-14 Thread Eunice Chang
Here you go:

http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer08/FEATsum08TT.html - it tells you all the
equipment you need, such as a darning egg (or mushroom) and tapestry needle.

I don't know how thick the yarn is, but you can probably use sock yarn if
you go to a yarn shop. They're wool reinforced with a bit of nylon so they
can stand up to wear and tear. You probably can weave in yarn as many times
as you want. Avoid short-lived fibers such as merino or angora or cashmere-
they'll just result in more holes.

The other option is to get thin (but flexible) felt squares and to sew it
to the heel. The felt will mold to the heel and might last longer than the
sock yarn, though it may also stretch the existing area it is connected to.

Mostly, though, I just stuff the sock with batting and knot it and give it
to my dog.

That looks like a great ride though it seems like a completely different

Mine was coffee without walls (thanks to a fellow coffeeneur!). Beautiful

Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Riding Charactertics

2015-09-13 Thread Eunice Chang
I have 2 riv's- AHH and QB. I love them both, but I purposefully built QB
to be a bit different from AHH (less racks, thinner tires, lighter). QB is
my bike of choice for longer commutes/rides that don't require me to carry
anything. What everyone says is true- there's something about QB that is
pure magic. I don't know how to describe it - it's more of a feeling and a
state of being. it might just have been the right time, but QB was the bike
that really, really helped me be more confident about biking, especially in
traffic. It's incredibly stable, handles well, and manages to distinguish
itself from other bikes, while at the same time seamlessly becoming an
indispensable part of you.

I think the only time I'll ever sell a QB is if I really can't ride it
anymore. That will be a very sad day.

MacAusland's lap blankets are a fave of mine. I have two, one from the mill
itself, another from a sheep farm near Charlottesville, VA (Juniper Moon
farm). I even use them in the hot humid summers here.

Juniper Moon farm blankets are in limited supply, but MacAusland has a
direct site (http://www.macauslandswoollenmills.com/products.html).

If you aren't worried about money and want a MUSA option, you could get a
Swan's Island blanket. Not cheap, but their blankets are woven by local
weavers and the wool is all from sheep on Swan's Island off Maine.

[RBW] tandem captain advice?

2015-07-20 Thread Eunice Chang
This might be somewhat OT, but I thought I would ask the few of you who are
tandem captains what advice you would give to a new captain. It has been a
while...

A charity ride is coming up this Saturday, and it's at night, and since I'm
night-blind, a friend of mine has offered to captain the tandem. I fixed
one up, and we rode around a few times.
Here's what I know:

On starting:
-captain gets on first, feet on ground
-stoker gets on, puts feet on pedal
-captain starts

On stopping:
-captain puts feet down first?
-stoker puts feet down, and gets off
-captain gets off

On turning:
both lean, right?

Part of the problem is that my friend is shorter than I am by 2-4 inches,
which may influence her handling. We have no problem riding around, just
not so great on starting and stopping.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Most of you know Seth Vidal, who frequented RBW list and who was killed
in a hit and run two years ago. One of the things he liked was the ride
reports. He'd share them with me and we'd plan rides.

I joined the list a few months after he died, mostly just to update the
group, but I've also read some of your ride reports, and they were very,
very helpful on getting me back on the bike and rediscovering a new, but
different, kind of joy that only bicycles can provide. I thought I'd
contribute as well. It's also my small way of saying thanks for your
 support, intentional or not.

I've organized rides of remembrance on the day he died, and I rode his
Hilsen in both cases. This year, a friend of mine borrowed my QB for the
memorial ride so two Rivs were well represented. :)

The ride was roughly 2 miles- it was just a slow roll through the
neighborhood to the area where Seth was killed, to where the ghost bike
was, have a moment of silence, and then through a very short trail along
Ellerbee Creek and back to the starting point. We went to a pub later. The
most amazing thing was that when we all lined up in front of the ghost
bike, traffic actually slowed down (it almost never does- it's a 35 mph but
since it leads to highways on both ends, most folks go 45-50).

I led the ride, but I am a terrible ride leader. Last year, I rode really
fast ahead of the pack and it became a joke (after years of riding the
tandem and having Seth tell me to pedal harder, it's kind of hard to break
the habit). This year a friend took me for an impromptu 14 mile ride the
day before and another friend made sure I had a few beers in before the
ride. I apparently still went too fast, and someone kind of had to chase me
down to make sure I waited for the group. And honestly, I tried to slow
down. It's not my fault Rivs are extremely efficient machines.

And I would have taken photos, except I managed to destroy my camera with
the water from the bouquet of sunflowers (Seth's favorite) that I left at
the ghost bike. So I've collected others' into this album:

 https://www.flickr.com/photos/ejchang/sets/72157655728650855

Keep riding and writing. You never know who you might reach.

[RBW] on spreading the joy of Rivs...

2015-07-03 Thread Eunice Chang
I seem to recall a post on this list that said the best way to sell (or
advertise) Riv was to let someone ride your Riv.

Well, I was riding with a friend who hadn't biked in a year, and she was
getting faint on her Jamis commuter so we stopped and then got some coffee.
On the way back, she comments about how pretty my QB is, and since she's
slightly taller than me, I figure she can ride my bike without having me
readjust the saddle size.

I nearly didn't get my QB back. :) She was surprised by how stable the QB
was (it was a bit lighter and had skinnier tires than hers) and rode it
again and again and just one more time around the parking lot? please?

Seriously, though, it was fun watching someone discover the joys of a Riv
bike for the first time. It's like a lightbulbs/fireworks/amazeballs
moment.

So would it be risky if I told her she could ride the QB while I rode AHH
next time we go biking? (I would point her to the Riv site first,
naturally...)

2015-05-03 Thread Eunice Chang
This thread may have gotten me inspired to get eggs and bacon from the
local butchery. I just carried 'em in a plastic bag in a messenger bag.
Despite the bag slipping and hitting my legs and the bumpy, pothole-y path,
they made it all intact.

Re: [RBW] Spousal Conversion stories: they love biking after riding a Riv

2015-03-09 Thread Eunice Chang
Well. You could always ask her to ride a Riv frame that's just a wee bit
too small for you, Like, say, an Atlantis. Let her enjoy it and discover
that not all bikes ride like that- that it is possible to have a bike with
this much personality, style, and smooth handling.

And then, to her horror, sell it to someone else. Without asking her. (If
you have to have a good reason, say it's to buy another Riv.) That may be a
good time to fan the Riv-lust or start a Riv-wish-list or, gasp, join the
RBW-owners-mailing-list. Assuming she is still speaking to you, of course.

[RBW] calendars

2014-12-17 Thread Eunice Chang
Hi all,

Thought Riv folks might be interested:

I've made a calendar full of my bike photos (including a hilsen) and am
offering it for sale. I don't make a profit - I'm donating the calendar
sales to a local bike advocacy organization, Bike Durham.

If you're interested, take a look here:

https://squareup.com/market/justshiny/bike-calendar

(there are other things for sale too, like prints- but sales of these go to
a local animal shelter).

Thanks,
Eunice

Re: [RBW] Re: Sacks for Cats?

2014-12-03 Thread Eunice Chang
Hmm.

Has Nico tried a thundershirt? They are supposed to help with anxiety.

Have you considered putting into one of those pet carrier backpacks and
riding with that? This might sound kind of silly, but if Nico is strapped
to your back and you start biking and he realizes that this is a One True
Good Thing (tm) he might actually find the basket to be more comfortable :)
It's how I convince shy dogs to get out of their kennels- because being
lifted outside is much more inconvenient for them and they realize that I'm
not ever going to take them elsewhere and that outdoors are indeed most
excellent One True Good Thing (tm).

Some believe the North/South designations are designated by Mason-Dixon

Maryland is just right below the mason-dixon line, and therefore southern.

In reality, it doesn't matter as all of 50 states (even Hawaii) were below
freezing Monday night!

Title Nine, a women's clothing store, features Betty Foy in their
catalog. A few years back they only had spandex and jerseys as cycling
clothes. They've come a long way now featuring clothing that looks
quotidian. In fact their catalog had eight bike models! This is a first. If
you or your significant is interested in clothing that's stylish,
comfortable and moves well on a bike--Title Nine is the best. I might have
to buy those cycling pants, though.

Addison, mid-June sure seems like a late end to the school year!

I retired from teaching a year-ago-May. Retirement is a much better

classes, attending workshops or helping run workshops. And always in the
back of one's mind was the ongoing analysis of how the previous year had
gone, and what might be tweaked up a bit to change or improve the next time
around, while trying to decompress from the school year.

My current activities (besides constant grass mowing) include,
gardening, cycling, hand tool woodworking, blacksmithing, helping my Mom
after recent heart surgery (she's doing fine).

Riv content: I had a nice 80 miles or so on the Riv yesterday, with some
rain here in s.w. MO. Fenders were nice. Too warm for a rain shell, so
you just enjoy the rain. I wear a visor (cut up ball cap) under the
helmet. It provides shade when sunny and keeps rain out of my eyes. I
notice I hardly drink any water when it's cool and raining. Also, I'm
usually nibbling on food out of the handlebar bag, but zip it closed during
rain. Yesterday's food; swiss cheese and pecans. I'm trying to eat less
carbs - including when riding - and I notice that on long rides I have much
 less tendency to bonk.

 Enjoying the endless summer . . .

Re: [RBW] Re: OT - RIP Ezra Caldwell. Bike builder, photographer, cook, dance instructor, blogger, husband, and all around cool dude.

The last time I talked to Ezra was in November. We talked about Seth,
bikes, and how to deal with the aftermath. He made me a special pill flask
(brass and steel) for Seth's ashes and I roped a piece of bike grease
stained twine through it. It broke my heart how unbelievably kind he was
knowing what he was facing.

Interesting tidbit: when I decided to go for a custom mixte, my two choices
were either Riv or Ezra. Ezra won out if only because his timeframe was
only slightly bit shorter. I'm glad I made that decision, though my heart
is a little heavier when I ride Pilot (a Fastboy) or Thumper (aka AHH)
these days.

He will always be missed, and be forever an inspiration.

I really like my helmet mirror. It is the type that attaches to

addicted to my mirror that I am stuck wearing my helmet whenever I am
riding near cars. Off road, I prefer my Tilley Hat, but on road, I need the

assuage my guilt and “Riv my helmet” so I could tell myself that I’m not
really a geeky Fred. But truth be told, I am a geeky Fred; and no amount of
Rivendell hempen twine is going to fix that.

Now I have a handlebar mount for my phone! Is there any hope for me? Can
 I escape this gadget addiction?

At this point, I think it's more important that we encourage people to
bike, rather than scaring them out of biking. That alone will help
awareness and hopefully change transportation infrastructure. And it's safe
to say in my experience, helmets WILL make a difference in *head* injuries
but won't protect you from dying. To be fair, nothing will actually prevent
us from dying...

[RBW] 30daysofbiking

2014-05-01 Thread Eunice Chang
I thought I'd share my experiences on 30 days of biking last month here:

https://sleepyneko.exposure.co/30-days-of-biking

Warning: it's kind of long and well, teary. But if you read it all the way
through you might be rewarded with glimpses of Thumper Buttercup, aka
Seth's A.H.H., which I tweaked for, er, emergency purposes. :)

And I meant it when I said thanks for the ride reports. I couldn't imagine
riding a bike post-death, and when I could two months later, it was a
relief. But your ride reports created an itch so bad I had to absolutely
scratch it, fears and grief be darned. My morning coffee rides are really a
thing of joy.

Anyway, thank you again and keep writing those ride reports. I'll keep
pedaling along...

Re: [RBW] What does rollerblading in slow motion have to do with Rivendell and riding?

2014-04-04 Thread Eunice Chang
I can't watch the video- it isn't captioned, so I don't know the details,
but I get the gist of it.

For what it's worth, I ride my bike first thing in the morning if I can,
and it's usually the only time I get to ride. I just go to the coffee shop,
fill my thermos, and go outside and watch the sun rise or people going in
and out and have a small cup (it's a big thermos). Sometimes I write,
sometimes I just sit there, sometimes I read the poem of the day in
writer's almanac.

Seth was the one who did the coffee ride- he'd ride every morning to bring
us coffee, and he'd try to do it daily with exception of some very frigid
mornings (he's a Southern boy after all). Sometimes it would be his only
ride the whole day. I thought I'd try it out, and I've found a route that
works for me (low key, very little traffic, wide roads, some hills). It's
only 2 miles total, but it is definitely my happy place. When I ride to the
coffeeshop, I ride into the sunrise, and when I'm ready to go back, the sun
is behind me and has warmed me up. Most mornings I feel like singing at top
of my lungs (though I stay quiet out of respect for my neighbors).

And always, I feel like I'm riding with Seth when I ride my bike. I get to
see dogs being walked, say hi to my neighbors, watch flights of birds, try
not to run over inexperienced baby squirrels, and see the trees in bloom
(currently, dogwoods, redbuds, magnolias, though thankfully, bradford pears
are done for now). Soon it will be honeysuckle and jessamine time. I'm
beginning to understand why he liked the morning rides.

And no, there's no reason to ride to the coffeeshop other than that it
feels like a sacred ritual that is both fun and invigorating and well, just
brings me joy. The rare, unadulterated kind of joy that can coexist with
the ever-present grief. And I'll always have Seth to thank for that (he
taught me to ride a bike uhmm, 9 years ago).

Enjoy the ride.

Well, it gets really interesting around 8:45. There, Slomo talks about the

Re: [RBW] Re: Leaping onto an Atlantis

2014-03-20 Thread Eunice Chang
Emily,

I'm going to quote someone who was wiser than me. If it makes you happy and
enjoy the rides more, the cost is trivial. If it makes you ride more,
that's a bonus. It's more of a quality thing. And if you can afford it, go
for it. If you can't, you might want to look for an used Atlantis or a
cheaper frame (Surly LHT comes to mind).

The first time I rode an Atlantis, I wanted to ride it forever.
Unfortunately it was on temporary loan, and I regret not buying it from the
owner when I had the chance.

Due to personal circumstances, I ended up with a custom mixte that cost
about as much as a fully equipped Atlantis, and it was set up in Riv style,
and it's been worth every penny. Never mind that I ride a mere two miles to
the coffee shop, and not even everyday; every time I ride it I always want
to ride more and look for new routes.

Good luck with your decision.

Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell Riders use for tandems?

2014-01-31 Thread Eunice Chang
I haven't been on a tandem bike for over six months so I'd forgotten all
about that.

The bike friday does have something called thudbuster, and I liked that. I
used a sprung saddle for a while and hated it, but that might have to do
with the actual saddle/seatpost than anything else (it kept slipping down
and tipping back and forth). And yes, the bumps can be worse on a tandem-
which is why I usually paid more attention to the road than the captain
(our deal was he talked to folks in group rides, and I looked at the map
and the road). It becomes less obvious on more frequently traveled roads
b/c I got used to where all the bumps were and muscle memory kicked in. :)

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for tandems?

2014-01-30 Thread Eunice Chang
As a stoker, I have to chime in. I've tried like 5-6 different tandems and
here's what I know:

It does make a difference in how fast you want to go- the lightest frame
will go very fast. However- you really have to check your brakes because
when you go downhill on a tandem, you go much, much faster and can easily
burn out your brakes. Bike Friday tandems are different from regular
tandems (I find them a bit more rickety; my (sadly, now deceased) captain
found them more fun to bike). Riv-style tires (ie the wide tires) are a
pain to put in most tandems (I know, because I once asked if I could put
hetres in one of them). And, if you're over 6' and your stoker is over 5'6
a majority of tandems are going to be too small for you. Bike Fridays get
around the height issues because most of them can be adjusted for varying
heights, but IMO, they feel very different from the solid frames.

There really is no such thing as no pedaling, unless you have independent
pedaling systems. Also, you really don't want the stoker to not pedal,
because otherwise it will be like biking with a er... dead weight in the
back. And don't even think of not pedaling as a captain unless you want
your stoker to really, really hate you. (Don't ask me how I know :) It's
really more about working together more than anything. In the long rides,
one of us (but not both) would inevitably get tired, and it really helped
that the other one had a bit more energy than the other- the tired one
would just lightly go through the movements while the other one would pedal
harder. That way we sort of took breaks without stopping. You cant do
this as a captain, but a stoker can pretty much ride without really having
to lean weight on arms/hands (unless you are planning on racing).

In short, the captain does all the steering and balancing - looking out for
traffic, braking, stopping. The stoker provides the engine - pedaling.
(My least favorite question is does she really pedal? she really isn't
pedaling, right?). It took me a while to let go of not being able to
brake- I like to go more slowly and take less risks- but eventually I just
trusted the captain to do things right. (And he, more or less, trusted me
to pedal when I should be pedaling.)

I've done 33 miles, 45+ miles, and a metric century (about 66 miles) on a
tandem. The last one took about 6+ hours and that may be a bit much for a
stoker. i know it was a bit much for me- mostly because I could not
*imagine* spending more than 6 hours on a bike. Plus, staring at back of
one's helmet or bum for 6+ hours can get a little tiresome...one thing that
helps on such ride is having the stoker read maps/be the backseat rider.
In the winter, one advantage as a stoker is that one never really has to
face the wind chills as the captain is a good draft blocker...ha. My
favorite thing as a stoker was being able to take photos that I otherwise
would never be able to take on my single bicycle.

I would suggest trying out a rental or borrowed tandem first, doing a few
city rides, and if you do get one, try using it for commutes or nights out,
and then gradually moving to longer weekend rides. And if you end up hating
it, don't feel bad. You won't be the first couple who hates it- everyone
has a different cycling style. I know one couple who tried a tandem and it
took them a while to say that it was not for them and they're still
together.

Here's a list of tandems I've tried:
vintage Gitane (sold)
Burley Paso Doble- best for long distance
Bike Friday Family Tandem Traveler (sold)
vintage Santana (so old they didn't list it in their catalogue) - best for
city rides
Bike Friday Tandem Traveler XL - best if you want to fly around and take
your tandem with you

rentals/test rides:
Burley Duet
Hase Pino (this is a weird tandem in which the stoker is a recumbent in
front and the captain steers in the back. This is fun until you go downhill
and the stoker realizes that trying not to fall off the bike might be more
of a challenge.)

Stoker cam (as I like to call it) pics at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ejchang/sets/72157624509288453/

Also, I don't know where you are but if you are in Maryland, Mt. Airy
Bicycles might be worth going to test out a bunch of tandems. They aren't
the cheapest but iirc, they have a lot of variety- new and used and you can
try out a bunch of them. Here's the link:
http://www.bike123.com/

Hope that helps,
Eunice

Sort of off topic...not so much about specific Rivendell bikes, parts or

I thought some of you might be interested in an update about Seth's case.
Yesterday was the sentencing/verdict.

 Hi-

You don't know me, but I'm Seth's partner Eunice. I have debated sending
this, because I'm not really a Riv owner but thought you all might want to
 know.

The bike he rode when he was killed was his Romulus. I don't know where it
is, but it's probably being held for evidence.

The other Riv bike he had, the Hilsen, was displayed prominently at his
 memorial service.

I also wanted to thank you for your condolences.
