Re: [RBW] Classic Raleigh 3-Speed Sport FS in Sacramento
I didn't think those old bikes were so well remembered. Funny. My old friend who lives across the park has a garage loaded with old Raleighs like this (not step thru) and Pughs. They even have the same frame mounted, painted pumps that came standard on the bikes. He asked me once to try and sell them for him, but I never got around to it. His garage is a gold mine of old collectibles, ranging from these bikes, all the way up to a Delorean roadster. I guess he's kind of a hoarder. Re: [RBW] Busses/Bike thieves
You know, despite these rolling smash-and-grab deals, it's still easy and very convenient to take a bus for part of one's ride. Each day, there are hundreds of cyclists who use the front racks to carry a bike along a section of a commute, or a sightseeing trip. The thefts are a miniscule number of those rack users. I see the rear vertical racks on some of the private commuter busses (Google, Facebook, Genentec, etc.) and see most of those bikes not locked into the rack. Granted, they are not local runs, but still easy to take a bike at a red light or in commute traffic. It's like all things urban; know where you are, where you are going, and use common sense. Re: [RBW] Re: New Kryptonite Bike Lock Idea
I have taught the same sort of lesson twice, the most recent just a few days ago. A worker at our corner deli had been locking her bike to a 2 pylon in front of our house (I placed it there to prevent the parallel parking challenged from backing into our newly planted sidewalk tree). The pipe sticks above the sidewalk only about 4 feet. The other day, I was present as she rode up, said hello, etc., then U-locked her bike to the pipe pylon. I suggested to her that wasn't the best locking practice. She looked puzzled, so I made the point by simply lifting her bike over the end of the pipe. I wish now I that had done it differently, as she was visibly quite embarrassed. I felt bad, as she is a very pleasant person. But, she at least locks up her bike more strategically now to another, much higher pole a bit further down the block. Also, it is capped with a Street Cleaning schedule sign that is much larger than the U-lock. Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis as touring bike: best choice?
I have toured on my Atlantis on the Western Express route and several other shorter trips. It has been a comfortable and wonderful bike, and I had no problems with the bike (other than just one flat tire in Pueblo, CO). That said, I definitely saw more fellow tourers on Long Haul Truckers than I did on any other make or model. The two bikes are very similar. I would not delay a trip just because a certain model bike was not yet available. The trip would be my priority, and the bike a close secondary. I would not force a trip on a bike ill suited for that purpose, but if I had a LHT in hand, or had to wait for and Atlantis, I'd pack the LHT and set off. Re: [RBW] Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers
I use the Thule platform. It is heavy, but sturdy and accommodating for loading. (I have also used it in the folded out position to haul other things, such as kayak gear n lash-down bags.) I also have a Thule hanger that I seldom use anymore. Mainly I loan it out to the kids. I saw a guy driving a Ford SUV with a neat set up. He had a 2-bike platform rack mounted front and rear. Expensive to set up, but it has its practicalities. As for rack wobble and rattle, the Thule has a internal welded nut in the slide that bolts tight against the receiver. Stops all rattle and wobble. I also see these devices on a lot of racks to eliminate rattle and wobble: http://www.amazon.com/Stow-Away-StowAway-Hitch-Tightener/dp/B0001CMUV4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8qid=1395325995sr=8-3keywords=stowaway2 Any of these products would be helpful to raise a long hanging rack: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Dapsfield-keywords=hitch%20risersprefix=hitch+ri%2Capsrh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Ahitch%20riser From: WETH erlhous...@gmail.com To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, March 20, 2014 6:59 AM Subject: Re: [RBW] Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers Thanks for all the helpful responses. That upcoming Sardis does look beautiful and sturdy. Thanks for the link. David, I appreciate the reminder of how far out this rack will extend. The sheer size is a concern. Tony, I like the trailer idea with a custom rack inside. Unfortunately, I do not have a good place to store it when not using it. I think I would also have to register a trailer. (Not a deal breaker, just a hassle) Then I could start a thread about the best tires for a trailer hauling bikes. ;) For a while I have dreamed of an extended cab, full size bed, diesel pickup truck with a custom made, by me, bike rack in the bed! Unfortunately my wife knows that I know this is not in the budget right now. We have at least three multi-night family bike trips on the calendar this year, and I hope to add a few more. Some are less than 5 hours away like Cumberland, MD and Chincoteague, VA. The other, PEI in Canada, will be a longer drive. Again thanks so much to everyone for taking the time to respond. I appreciate all the ideas. I will report back with pics and write-up when I choose. Erl -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. regarding covered bikes and obscuring tail lights. My bro-in-law hauls his bikes around on his Subaru Forester. Re: [RBW] Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers
I use a platform carrier for two adult bikes. I like it a lot. My advice is to absolutely go with a 2receiver for hauling 4 bikes. That is a lot. also, on a smaller car like the Subaru, consider a riser for the receiver that will lift the rack another 4 to 6 inches. With a load of bikes sticking that far out in back, you will encounter scraping when driving in and out of pitched driveways into gas stations and elsewhere. the riser will go a long way toward eliminating that. Also, some states will be picky about using any sort of bike cover that obscures the tail lights of the vehicle. A small car like a suaru is one such car that would be problematic in that regard. From: WETH erlhous...@gmail.com To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2014 3:31 PM Subject: [RBW] Hanging vs Platform Hitch Bike Carriers Apologies if this has been discussed in a thread missed by my addled brain and weary eyes. For some upcoming family bike adventures, I am in the market for a hitch mounted bike carrier for my Subaru Forester. It must hold four (4) adult-size steel-frame bikes most with albatross bars. I am leaning toward a platform carrier as they seem to hold the bikes further apart and appear easier to load. They seem to extend further rearward than hanging carriers do. Also, it appears, from reviews I have read, that hanging carriers hold one fewer bike than advertised. Much like a tent comfortably holds 1 fewer person than advertised. So, I would be comparing a 5 bike capacity hanging carrier with a 4 bike capacity platform carrier. Am I on or off base with the above? Any advice or suggestions on hitch mounted racks that can accommodate 4 bikes? Personal experiences with platform vs hanging? As always I appreciate the wisdom and experience of this group. Thanks, Erl PS: I have a Yakima roof mounted carrier system on my car, but my back dislikes the reach to the roof of the taller Subaru. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Bike Camping. We are DOING IT WRONG
I agree about the bug screen. I didn't experience that on the trip shown -- too wet, except for the giant banana slugs that I had to pluck off the inside of the tent walls each morning. I'll take giant banana slugs over skeeters any day. I hate skeeters. I did not bring a floor as it would get torn up with the bike and trailer. I used a bivy on this trip (you can see it in these pix), which does have a face net. I just never needed it. From: Tim Gavin tim.ga...@littlevillagemag.com To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, January 16, 2014 6:27 AM Subject: Re: [RBW] Bike Camping. We are DOING IT WRONG Yes! That's a cool shelter. Do you lay a piece of plastic down underneath your sleeping bag/mat? I like that you can park your bike inside! I'm not sold on a screen-less tent; Iowa has fierce mosquitos in summer. I have this tent (Big Agnes Emerald Mtn SL3), which is crazy light for a 3-person backpacking tent ~5.5 lbs. There is an optional vestibule that is advertised as big enough to be a bike garage. I may pick one up... As for retro camping gear, I love it so long as it's lightweight. I used heavy canvas/military surplus stuff as a kid in the Scouts, but I've upgraded since. (Modern military gear is pretty good, though; I use my combat boots and gore-tex suit often) I managed to get a pair of home-built, barely used Frost Line down sleeping bags for cheap recently. Frost Line was a company that offered mail-order kits (patterns and materials) to make your own outdoor gear. http://www.oregonphotos.com/Frostline1.html Apparently, in the 1970s it was tough to find good mountaineering gear in the states (probably why Rivendell Mountain Works made such an impression on Grant). So, many folks made their own. The pair of bags I found (plus an additional down insert bag, for those polar nights) are probably built tougher than a modern North Face. They're lightweight (down!) and super warm. Basically for 40 degrees or colder only, 'cause they're ovens above that temp. Kinda like great vintage lightweight bikes. Retro, light, and just as excellent now as when they were made. Re: [RBW] Riv e-bike conversion?
I have very seriously considered it -- several times. I am an old guy (65+) but in relatively good health. I don't need an ebike, but there are plenty of times where I would welcome the ability to use power assist on my pedaling. If I only cycled for health reasons, then I would see no point in a conversion. But I cycle mainly for transportation purposes, and because there is very little free/cheap parking in San Francisco. I carry cargo on my bike, and I have several hills in between my home and my office. I can and do make the commute each day without an ebike, but I would have no qualms at all using an ebike on the commute. Price has been a factor, as well. But, the technology is evolving very rapidly, and there are very reasonable ebikes on the market. I would be more inclined to go for a factory build now rather than a conversion. I see often some very impressive factory ebikes on the streets of SF. Re: [RBW] My new-to-me 'Beamer
Nice! My QB is also the first gen green. I was running drops until about a year ago when I switched those out for Albas with cork grips. I like that riding position much better, and since I climb a lot, the forward bends on the Albas are good for the climbing or aero poses. As I said, I climb a lot, so I switched out the 40/32 for a 32/24. I have a dos eno 16/18 on the drive side, but also a free 22 on the flip side. I'm no blaze, but I can climb Mt. Shifting for QB/SO is by un-bolting the rear wheel and moving the chain to the cog (single or dingle) and/or chain ring (single or double). The not-so-secret is that QB/SO has longer than typical rear fork ends (and they have a slight curve). Chain ring + cog combos chosen carefully as chain slack (like most single-speed or fixed) is accommodated by axle position in the fork end. The curve in the fork end is nice to keep the rim/rear brake position constant-- no need to change the brake shoe position. http://www.cyclofiend.com/Images/rbw/rr31_pg25.jpg Hope that helps, shoji On Tuesday, December 24, 2013 10:38:47 AM UTC-5, Tony DeFilippo wrote: I know this exists somewhere, could some one share a link, hopefully with pictures describing the QB non-derailleur shifting options... Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell SimpleBeam - New Model - Call for the Seriously InterestedB
Not too far off topic. Yesterday it was a beautiful mid-December afternoon and unseasonably warm here in the Bay Area. Since the 49ers weren't playing until this evening, I decided to take a ride over the bridge into the Marin Headlands. I've not done that in a couple of months. I chose to take my QB, more on a whim than anything. I have been riding the QB to the office, rotating between it and the Gomez for several months, now. I didn't even bother to remove the single Swift Industries pannier from the rear rack. I just pulled it out of the back, got on, and headed for the bridge. Very little thought given to it at all. Despite the fact that the QB's engine needs a serious tune-up, the ride was still exceptionally smooth, quiet, and conducive to just riding. Last year I replaced the drops with Alba's and cork grips. What a great riding position, and the forward bends in the Alba allowed for better hill climb position when needed (which, in the Headlands, is always necessary). Anyway, I did not even bother to take the obligatory beauty shots with the iPhone. I just rode, stopped, drank water, and rode some more. Very good ride. I love that bike. At a pit stop by the Pt. Bonita Light House trail, a couple of guys rode up to also use the facilities. Not clubbies or weekend racers. Just a couple of guys riding around. One checked out the QB and was quite taken with it. He asked lots of questions, and was very impressed with the design and the simplicity of it all -- and mine is more cluttered up than many. I showed him how easy it is to switch gears, explained the need to flip the wheel for the low granny set-up. All that. He got it, too. He knew that one would not be in a particular hurry when riding a QB. Nice guy, really, although neither had ever heard of Rivendell. When this topic popped up, it struck me that I didn't want to skew the conversation by talking about my own bias towards the Quickbeam design. It seemed to me (and still does) that the Quickbeam/Simpleone is one of the great designs that Grant has come up with - containing those things which are needed, but little else. Of course, in the years since that first announcement appeared, there have been a number of trends which have come and gone or arrived and stayed. It's incredibly easy to get large volume 622/700C tires, both smooth and treaded. Longer stays are not an outlier. Racks and useful bags more commonplace. Recently swept-back bars and mixte-acceptability have edged into the common arena. So, with those facets gaining more proponents, my thought was really to see if any of them have become more have-to-have features. With ~2500 addresses in this group, even if EVERYONE who ever bought a 'Beam or a 'One is here, that means that ~2100 of them didn't. If there's some reason why, other than a lack of derailleur, it would be interesting if that popped up. None of which may matter, as GP might already have ideas nailed down, lugs, tubes and angles spec'd. But, I will pass trends and comments (both here and the private thoughts and pre-orders which folks have submitted) along to Grant when he has fewer things on his immediate plate. If the next model looks exactly like the last, it would not bother me in the least, but at least it won't be because I didn't ask. ;^) all the best, - Jim On Sunday, December 22, 2013 12:39:41 PM UTC-8, Peter Pesce wrote: Agreed Jim. Wouldn't it just be easier to see if there were 30 people willing to pre-order an actual SO/QB? I know there's no opportunity for creative expression in that, but it does seem odd to try to satisfy demand for the those bikes with a new bike that will explicitly NOT be those bikes! I know GP uses clone in a pejorative sense but to keep making a bike is not cloning it. Besides, aren't there business side advantages to continuing to sell, though perhaps on a limited, pre order basis, the bike for which you already amortized the tooling and development costs? I have a last gen silver QB and love it. If it were stolen or wrecked I'd seriously consider paying custom-shop money for a new one. I'm not the least bit interested in a NewBeam that has the chunky tube set of my Sam, double top tubes, or wavy gravy curved rear triangle bits. Re: [RBW] Re: Get a Betty Foy, old man
I ride my Gomez to work and home every day, and still find it more difficult to swing a leg thru the down tube space than to mount it like all my other bikes by swinging a leg over the seat. I'm 64. I have RA and had to quit riding for about ten years until things got under control. When I first tried to ride again last year it took the better part of the summer before I could mount my Sam. I've been working regularly on hip and leg flexibility and it is getting easier to swing my leg over the saddle. I am however, starting to consider the possibility that the damage to my joints and muscles from RA may not return to the level of flexibility I used to be able achieve. So I'm looking seriously at mixte frames especially for my Xtracycle. Even tho I'm 66 I don't feel it either physically or mentally so it takes constant and conscious attitudinal adjustment focus on where I am now and see my current limitations as changeable with extra work. Having to switch to a mixte frame won't stop me from riding. On Tuesday, April 2, 2013 12:43:08 PM UTC-5, Norman Bone wrote: Study says old men should ride B. I should also have mentioned that all of my bikes are outfitted with the V-Brand Keven's saddlebag. Re: [RBW] Re: Betty's commute... and Riv panniers!
I unabashedly copied the stem shifter idea from Rene when I put my Gomez together last year. I love them, and they operate a wide-range double with 8 speed cas. Initially, it ocurred to me to use Paul's Thumbies since the quill of the stem and the bar are the same diameter, and my first experiments were so succesful I used them on several of my bikes: http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/6118656165/in/set-72157625129486363; though it forced the shifters to be staggered, it was not a problem. BTW, these are the same barend shifters I had, and you can really use any shifter, downtube/barend with the proper adapter that comes with the barend shifters, since the downtube shifters have the adapter that is curved on one end for the downtube. Recently, Rivendell started selling the IRD stem quill shifter mount (http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/sh15.htm) so I ordered a set and used it on the Betty. Aside from the nice polished look, now both shifters are level and it just looks nicer: http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/8370178221/in/set-72157625115263842 Currenly I only have them on the Betty; on both the Atlantis and the Hunqapillar I went to downtube shifters since the Bullmoose bars (regular + Bosco) that I am now using and liking so much create some vertical interference and the design of these bars means that very little quill is now exposed. If you are using a standard stem, then there is no interference. My Hilsen still has the barend shifters mounted on the Noodle bars, being my only bike that still sports them. I really like how the barend shifters work on the quill/stem setup. Give it a try! René On Thu, Jan 24, 2013 at 12:58 PM, Savvas ka...@chariot.net.au wrote: i Rene, nice bike and nice pics! Re: [RBW] Re: New Betty Foy frame: trouble getting bolts into brazeons
I say buy the tap.The advantage to a tap -- VS a bolt -- is the channels on the sides of the tap let the paint follow out as the tap is twisted into the thread pattern. Using a bolt pushes the shaved paint through the threads in front of it. Plus, a tap is tapered at the entry, so proper alignment onto already cut threads s much easier, and the threads will stay intact. By the way, with a properly sized tap, you won't need much torgue to shave off the paint from the threads From: William tapebu...@gmail.com To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Sent: Sun, December 30, 2012 9:28:06 AM Subject: [RBW] Re: New Betty Foy frame: trouble getting bolts into brazeons And for prices, my Ace Hardware in El Cerrito had the handle for $6, and the taps for $5 each. Sebastian -- I own a Canti-Romulus, which is the poor man's version of the Ram. I rode down the Oregon Coast on it a few years ago pulling a BOB trailer. I did not sense any over-load. I have toured fully loaded front and rear panniers on my Atlantis and can tell you it is steady as a rock. The same comment applies to a loaded Bleriot and Sam H. I found the mid 80's frame which I had very well adapted to my needs, a 28' wheeled sports-tourer with room for up to 32mm tires (with fenders), long enough chainstays to have fenders and carry luggage on racks but still with side pull-brakes (47-57 reach) and double crankset, the fork even with eyelets for lowrider though I never used them. Besides doing all my commutes with it I also travelled a lot on it, always with just two panniers and a handlebar bag. I did a lot of brevets and several week-long tours (with camping gear) with that frame, and though not the lightest and maybe a little on the flexy side there was nothing really to complain about. Since the accident I try to find something similar and Rivendell has made some bikes in the past that seem to be what i am looking for, or at least come very close to what I search for. As I hope to find amongst you the real connaiseurs of this brand I would like to know which of the Rivendell frames (also former ones) comes closest to my demands in your opinion so that I can look for an occasion to try to find one in my size (PBH 84cm). While in the current lineup I am not so shure there is such a model, the older Rambouillet seemed to me the role model although I am not shure if there is enough heel clearance to have larger panniers and two eyelets would also be nicer at the rear and front drop out? Has anybody experiences with that kind of luggage on a Rambouillet? I would be pleased to hear some first hand knowledge and if somebody has a frame in my size (~58cm for 28' wheels) he wants to part with i would also like to know about it. Re: [RBW] Are Brooks Saddle Worth the Money?
I'll add an anecdotal story… A couple of years back, I rode a long distance ride from SF to Ok City with an Aussie and a Brit (no, this is not a bad bar joke). Both of those fellows were riding on expensive plastic gel saddles, me a moderately priced Brooks B17 on my Atlantis. It was a 6 week-ride, and I never suffered any discomfort or other butt malady during the ride. I never rode in padded shorts. My companions, however, spent most of the ride in high discomfort if not all out agony. It was very hot most days, and their sweating butts broke out in all sorts of hot-spots and saddle sores. They each tried a new and softer saddle, even more padding, lotions and salves, etc., and nothing relieved their problems. I tried to explain that it was rather counter-intuitive, but the more firm the saddle and less padded the butt, the more comfortable it would be. I explained that the brooks was really a very taught suspended platform that conformed to my butt and allowed some air flow, but neither bought into my explanation, and each just kept salving up at each stop and complaining. Re: [RBW] Re: OT: Advice on trailer hitch mounted bicycle racks
I have used the Thule on my Jeep Cherokee for several years and like it a lot. One big drawback to the Thule is that it is a little on the heavy side. The thing I really like about it is that it uses a bolt to hold it into the receiver rather than a pin. This holds the rack firmly and it does not wiggle around inside the receiver. Re: [RBW] Are Brooks saddles really that high maintenance?
I agree. I sweat a lot, and have never ruined a Brooks. I use Brooks on all my bikes. If I ride in rain, I try to remember to cover the saddle, but often forget. Generally the nose will get wet and darken, but after an air dry, it goes away. I don't even use the goop on them. I just ride 'em. Re: [RBW] Re: Rationalizing a Reduction; Encourage Me
Thanks to all of you who responded. I enjoyed reading all the posts. Beth, my wife would agree and disagree with your reply. She would be adamant in both cases, though: I do have too many bikes, and that proves the second point, having more than one butt, the other being at the top end of my torso. The folder prospect I am respectfully dismissing. I have owned folders in the past, and rarely ever folded them. My entire commute is by bike, and I never incorporate public transit into that commute, so a folder isn't needed. My employer has a large, and very secure and convenient bike cage in the basement garage of the building, so my commuter is never locked out on the street to a pole or meter. My second employer allows bikes to be brought right up into the work space. Many have advised to keep the QB. I admit that I nearly left it on my keep list as well. Last year I removed the drop bars and replaced them with Albas, and that is a wonderful commuting set up. But, last year I also picked up my Yves Gomez, and equipped it with albas, a rack, and a wide-range double chain ring set up. That has become my favorite all time commute/short day rides bike, so it will stay in my garage. I'll need to fender it, however, if I dump the Jamis commuter. For the time, I'll remove the QB from the list. Maybe go back to drop bars. Many urge keeping the Atlantis. I agree. It was never in jeopardy. Several urge keeping the Bleriot. I like it a lot, but it is a size too small, and my Rawland will give me the 650B experience. I will keep the Rawland for the handful of times each year that I ride off-road in desert sand conditions and very occassional day rides up Mt. Tam or in the Marin Headlands. I do have two sets of 650 wheels, and have commuted on the Rawland with a set shod in Fatty Rumpkins. For the road, I like the Canti-Rom, and it was my very first RBW purchase. Fits like a glove. Always welcome more comments. This is a very cool groupo! I recently sold off my singlespeed (Redling MonoCog) after determining that, much as I've anjoyed it, my knees can no longer handle singlespeed mountain biking. That leaves the All-Rounder, the LongLow and the Surly Big Dummy as my remaining bikes that are ready to ride. Between the three of them, my bikes don't so it all, but as a rider, neither do I anymore. Re: [RBW] Re: Rationalizing a Reduction; Encourage Me
That QB recommendation is a great one. Use it as my beater. As it is, the frame is already showing its age, and the paint chips and scratches are too numerous to count. Good idea! My only concern would be locking, but I have locks aplenty. I don't need but one lock at the work place(s) since those are both secure facilities. But the other city errands I must lock the bike to poles or meters, so I need to be cautious. But, it is beat up looking, and that always helps. I could even consider keeping the IGF from my Jamis, and work that onto the QB. Quickbeam - I am prejudiced, but if you had one bike and two wheelsets, this COULD be it... :^) Fixed, with a front basket, this is your new beater. Canti-Rom, set up as fast and light as you can make it. Rawland set up as burly as you can make it. I'd ride three of these on fireroads, or commute on a different three. Flared drops all around. Dick Denning and his father, Dick Senior, with the Country Bike Shop, Celina, Ohio, met me part way (I live in Memphis, Tennessee) to deliver the bike. Photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/51857171@N04/sets/72157629209094990/ The entire process has been great. Dick was on top of things from beginning to end--even though I threw him a curve by switching my frame choice in the middle of things. My wife, who joined me for the pickup and fitting, was amazed at Dick's enthusiasm and expertise. (I was also, although my calls and emails had prepared me for our meeting.) Dick and his dad were great. I can't recommend them highly enough. (No, I don't own stock in the company.) :-) I've only had one ride so far--about 35 miles. Can't wait to get back on the bike. More later. I just wanted to get this post and photos up. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Orrliebs are also very well made and, of course, practical. I have used them as clothes washers and rinsers, water haulers, and kept a turtle in one while riding across a party of a Kansas section. I released it in a safe area. Sent from my iPhone On Mar 7, 2012, at 12:56 PM, PATRICK MOORE bertin...@gmail.com wrote: How do these compare with Ortlieb Packers? I find the Packers excellent; a lot of buckles, straps and drawcords make them a bit fiddly for shopping, but the attachment system is excellent, not only very secure and rattle free (if you set them up correctly) but unlike some other panniers I've had, they stay out of the spokes even with the minimalist racks I favor. I like the attachment system much better than the usual J hook plus bungee. And of course they hold immense amounts. Question two: any practical as opposed to aesthetic benefit for canvas over heavy duty nylon? Re: [RBW] Bay Area Travel/Biking - any place
John -- San Francisco abounds in bike rentals. One can go to very few of the popular routes or places and not see dozens of people on rental bikes. Sometimes, it's literally hundreds. I do not know what they charge, but the bikes look to be well maintained and most if not all are hybrids with fat tires and upright seating. Also increasingly more popular are electrics and electric assists rentals. Most of the rentals I see around here are Marin or Trek, and the various electrics. Most of us in this area have done many times what you are anticipating; biking everywhere in the Bay Area. With the intermodal public transportation system -- most bike friendly and accommodating -- one can easily get around sans automobile. Once in SF purchase a Clipper Card (Start with two cards at $20 each, then add funds accordingly). That allows you ready access and entry to SF Muni, BART, CalTrain, Golden Gate Transit, and other transits. From SF, one can bike all the way to Palo Alto and beyond, or go part way and incorporate CalTrain into the plan. IMO, CalTrain is the most bike accommodating agency around, with dedicated bike cars on each train. You can also take BART to the east bay -- and to walnut Creek to RBW -- or ride it. Of course, a ride across the Golden Gate Bridge is a must, then you also can ride into Marin's most famous areas; Marin Headlands, Tiburon/Paradise, Mt. Tam, Point Reyes, etc. You can ferry back to SF from Sausalito, Tiburon, and San Anselmo. I often bike from SF all the way to Alameda via the Dumbarton Bridge. Much of that route is on the Bay Trail with mixed surfaces. You can also take AmTrak Capitol Corridor express from the east bay which is bike accommodating, and ride up to Davis, Winters, Sacramento and beyond. You can also ferry to Vallejo and ride from there. There's nearly endless opportunities for great rides and accommodating public transit. I'm sure others will also have sound suggestions. Enjoy! We were hoping to do this exploration mostly by bike - credit card style, although probably trains, ferries and even a rental car may come into play (details are sketchy at this point). Any recommendations for how to get a reliable riv-ish ride for that time? I'm considering shipping our bikes (seems cheaper than bringing them on an airplane) but it makes me nervous. I'd prefer to rent, but most of what's out there seems to be offering skinny tired carbon bikes or hybrids, neither of which appeals to me. On a previous similar thread, someone suggests Karim's used bikes in Berkeley but elsewhere on the internet, it's reputed to be a fence for thieves. Bay Area Bikes offers the Big Dummy which is an attractive option but probably overbuilt for our needs (it makes my wife a little nervous). I'd go out of my way for a good rental so if you know of somewhere else in the Bay Area I should consider, let me know. The Atlantis came about around 1999 as Rivendell's Japanese-built version of their legendary All-rounder. The all-rounder is/was a bike-style designed to work well in the following ways: as a road bike for people not set on racing lightness or racing geometry. as an offroad vehicle once you mount some wide tires, and the tire clearance is wide. Grant would shoot for two inches, although the first Atlantis's in 99 through 2001 only got to about 1.9. as an excellent touring bike and in other ways you can think of, because the bike is so versatile. The versatility came through the very high clearances and cantilever brakes which gave no problem mounting fenders and very wide tires. The bike has a pretty long wheelbase and pretty long chainstays (although still shorter than the 80's Trek 720's). It has a low bottom bracket which improves road handling and invites larger tires, especially for offroad use. The other part of the versatility is the rack braze-ons and really nice fender mounting spots. In the earlier part of the 90's, one of the distinguishing features of the all-rounder was basing it around 26 inch wheels. This came from the Bridgestone days, when they were one of the few companies making hybrids based around the more useful at the time 26 inch wheel size when offroading is even considered. When Rivendell started, the All-rounder model would continue this 26-inch wheel design, and that was one of the features that made me want one then. But early in Rivendell's existence, they started not liking the 26-inch wheels on the larger sizes, and began selling the larger ones with 700c wheels and the smaller ones with 26 inch wheel. As a tall guy, this bummed me out until I was convinced that in the late 90's, offroad 700c tires, even 2-inch varieties, were beginning to blossom, mostly from WTB and Schwalbe. In the late 90's, the all-rounder was a model made in the US and was fairly expensive, and Grant wanted to make a version of it in Japan that would cost less. This is where the Atlantis came from. It has those all-rounder qualities described above, the big tire clearance, the great touring behavior, the offroad capability, nice bike to ride unloaded for road rides. It's an amazing bike, and it's still available as originally designed, only now it has more rack braze-ons for added versatility (mini-racks and such). I speak from experience regarding the Atlantis. I got mine in 2001, and it really can do everything I would want to do riding. All my other bikes are specialists in some specific cycling arena that the Atlantis can hold its own: sporty road rides, cross-country mountain biking, commuting, sub-24-hour overnighters, country biking with long days and mixed surfaces. What the Atlantis excels at that the others can't match is touring rides that include camping. 700c in the large sizes and 26 inch in the smaller sizes. Amazing bike. One of the higher price Rivendell production models, but worth it. And the 700c tire options are wonderful now. I don't long for 26ers much anymore. Additionally, the Atlantis was ahead of the mainstream now so excited about these modern 29ers! A Homer Hilsen: Perhaps without the All-rounder, the AHH could not have come about. Let's say you never want to tour, you love country rides, you like to veer off-road, you like to go overnight, just not days on end, you like to be comfortable for a long day. You like to carry stuff on your bike, at least sometimes, and you like road rides. But most importantly, in addition to all of the above, you want to do most of it, including the road rides, on tires that are between 32 mm and 40 mm, because you've discovered what an awesome size that is, including for road rides. Also, because you like that tire width so much, you don't want to scale the tire down just to mount a fender. If so, then the A Homer Hilsen is the bike. Also, the A Homer Hilsen has a cool refinement: dual pivot sidepulls work well and still provide the clearance needed

Bidding good-bye to 2011 couldn't have been any better. In great RBW spirit, I finally met fellow list member Ray Shine who had always offered to take me on rides around San Francisco. It is entirely my fault for having taken so long, but it finally happened. Yesterday I met with Ray at the San Francisco Marina and together we rode over accross the Golden Gate Bridge and then up Conzelman Road into the Marin Headlands to do Ray's loop. Being the last day of the year and with the gorgeous weather we had, the place was invaded with tourists on cars and rental bikes. Luckily, the rental bikes were turning left into Sausalito and not going up Conzelman Road. Ray was amazed at how many cars there were, so we were careful but had no issues. Plenty of roadies on CF bikes passed us, and while no one asked how much our bikes weighed (who would ask that after taking a look at me...?) I got an incredible number of compliments on my Atlantis. Even Ray complimented my bike when we first met. He was complaining that no one was giving him any compliments on his black Yves, although a couple of people complimented us both as they passed. Still, he couldn't believe the number of compliments. After taking some photos of the view of the Golden Gate, the city and the Bay at the highest vista point, we went down the 18% descent that has seen Ray crash twice last year; fist in January when he broke his collarbone and recently when he had his rim blow-out. We went cautiosly with cars coming behind us and pumping the brakes so the rims wouldn't heat up too much and stopped in the middle where more photos were taken. That descent is absolutely breathtaking. It's not just the 18% downhill grade, it's the fact that you have the ocean in front of you and just a guard-rail between you and the breathtaking view. Just awesome. After the descent we continued on Conzelman Road to its end, took some more photos of the two bikes and then Ray got me on the Atlantis with all the silver parts reflecting the setting sun. Having had nothing to eat since breakfast, combined with a few days of getting back on the proper eating plan plus not enough riding in the past 6 months resulted in my legs feeling completely empty by the time we finished the ride. A good soy latte and a chicken sandwich restored me and tasted like glory. Ray's company and guiding was nothing short of wonderful and to me, the first of many wonderful rides that I'll be asking him to take me along. On our way back after crossing the Golden Gate we saw the only other Rivendell bike that we'd see all day, and as luck would have it, the owner ran into us again as we were walking from the Starbucks to find a bench to sit down and eat on the Marina. Words and salutations were exchanged, mutual admiration comments on our bikes (he was riding a beautiful orange Sam) and he and Ray exchanged contact info since both live in the city and Ray has seen him before. For me, the most incredible thing was how incredible the spirit of both Ray and this other rider who is in his 70s is. As a younger man in my early 50s, it's awesome to see how these men contradict the traditional image I grew up with that as we got older we were just not supposed to be doing these things

Re: [RBW] Foggy Morning at the train station on Hunqapillar...
Yes, that was an Acorn saddlebag, but not at all new. In fact, it is Generation One from Acorn. I have divested myself of nearly all of my Acorn stuff, much preferring these days the Keven's V-Brand saddlebags. The Swift Industries stuff is First Rate. I recommend their products very highly. The primary advantage with the Swift stuff over the RBW V-brand Panniers is that they are two separate bags as opposed to two bags joined together, which makes for more versatility in packing and not having to worry over balancing a load, etc. From: René Sterental orthie...@gmail.com To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Sent: Tue, January 3, 2012 3:47:40 PM Subject: Re: [RBW] Foggy Morning at the train station on Hunqapillar... Re: [RBW] Last ride in 2011 and first ride with Ray Shine!
Rene is gracious to a fault, and his company was great! He's correct about the compliments that he received. And I was amazed at the numbers of those compliments. I attribute that to the stunning Atlantis that he rides. To borrow a phrase from my boat-building days, Rene really pays keen attention to detail, and that makes all the difference. Virtually everyone who called out a compliment was passing the both of us on a racing bike. I was chagrined because my Riv went virtually unnoticed behind Rene's gorgeous Atlantis. Even the sole Riv-rider we came across didn't notice that I, too, was aboard a Riv until I commented on the fact after he had announced It's nice to see another Riv rider out here! That's how magnetic Rene's build is. Bike lovers can't take their eyes off of it. After close inspection of Rene's new cockpit set up, we both started to wonder why RBW is apparently putting them on hiatus? They are exquisite bars. (Upon my return home, I went to RBW site with the thought that I'd buy a set. Alas! Sold out!) Good ride, good, company, and great bikes! For me, it was a good end to a not-so-good year. That descent is absolutely breathtaking. It's not just the 18% downhill grade, it's the fact that you have the ocean in front of you and just a guard-rail between you and the breathtaking view. Re: [RBW] Quickbeam gearing for hills and weak knee?
My QB is currently set with a 26/34 chain ring comb, and a 16/18 FW. I do have a 22 FW on the flip which I seldom use. My comfortable top speed on flats is only 14-16 mph. I live in SF, though, and I climb lots of hills of varying degrees of grade. I like the current configuration. From: Tim Whalen whalen...@gmail.com To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Sent: Wed, December 14, 2011 8:03:01 AM Subject: [RBW] Quickbeam gearing for hills and weak knee? Hi All, I love my Quickbeam but the combo of living on a hill and having a deteriorating knee that I want to avoid mashing on is limiting my riding with it. I now have 40/30 front and a 17/19 freewheel. I'd love to get it set up so I could spin home uphill and am willing to sacrifice top speed to do so, but also need to keep enough top end to ride safely on streets with cars. I'd also like to avoid flipping the wheel to get to an even lower outer freewheel. So, any thoughts about how I could modify my current gearing to favor easy climbing yet still have a bike that was geared high enough to be rideable on streets downtown? Thanks in advance. Re: [RBW] New to the group – First Post! Tire Review, Saddle Swap
Hi, Penny! Nice looking bikes! You really have it set up for hauling stuff. Front baskets are so handy. Enjoy, and welcome. From: Penny gopennygo.farth...@gmail.com To: RBW Owners Bunch rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Sent: Mon, December 12, 2011 1:22:00 PM Subject: [RBW] New to the group – First Post! Tire Review, Saddle Swap Hello Everyone, I was incredibly lucky to acquire my first Riv, a 48 Sam Hillborne, a little over 2 years ago as a birthday gift. It has been many gifts in one, the greatest of which may be the wind-in-my-face feeling that I can do anything from the seat of my trusty Sam. So along with this independence, I've really been racking and bagging it up. I have a basket zip-tied to a Nitto mini rack on the front; and a medium Sackville Saddlesack loaded onto the rear (currently rackless, works fine, but may throw a rack on later, don't know; yes it sits on the fender a little). Sometimes I slap on the Sackville panniers, but you gotta have the right kind of wind for those puppies. In short, I've turned my Hillborne into a cargo ship. Mostly for groceries or shopping; but if I needed to haul anything else, I’d take a lot of joy in figuring out how to do that. I’m totally sold on the Function-as-Beauty thing. I got a custom paint job, and for the first few months, I threw a fit if someone breathed on the bike the wrong way; but not anymore, because BTW (though I know I'm preaching to the choir at least somewhat here), though this bike rides like butter UNloaded; boy howdy—load 'er up and glide on home. That smile on your face isn't going to hurt anybody. I don't know how much grocery weight I've put on the thing, but it doesn't seem to mind, so I don't really think too much about it. Love that. http://bit.ly/sqT6he Last year, I also acquired a 50 Quickbeam, which is an amazing bike. Anyone on the fence about getting a SimpleOne should consider that bike more seriously. And not just as a secondary bike, but as your Go- To, Everyday. I’m not what you’d consider waifishly “fit,” and I lived in the hilly Blue Ridge (I’ve since moved), where I’d need to conquer hills to go anywhere—and I totally could on that bike, no big deal—but with Big Smiles. That’s a great, great bike. I don’t feel limited by the 1-2 gears; I feel adequately equipped, self-sufficient, competent. http://bit.ly/vQ2C5x And now, I’d like to put in a word for Col de la Vies. They don’t seem to get a ton of praise, but I’ve put maybe 3000 miles on mine with the Hillborne—road, dirt, gravel, rocky ruts, shallow streams, mud, grass, and now, over glass. Lots of broken glass, going over this one bridge near the stadium in Baltimore. These tires have been completely awesome in my experience. So, just wanted to share. Finally, Saddle Swap: I have a Brooks Swift (antique brown w/ copper rivets) in exceptionally good condition, currently on my Quickbeam. It’s not working out for me on longer rides because I can’t slide it back as far as I’d like. If any of you has a B.17 in similar condition and color and is looking for a nice Swift, please contact me off- list.
