Tracking cookies

2012-08-12 Thread Larry Bush
Hello,
I use SeaMonkey every day, and I send thanks to the people who develop it.
Whenever my pc starts having slow to very slow responses, I run
Superantispyware, and it usually finds tracking cookies.   After these are
removed, it runs more like it should.
So I'm writing to ask if code could be added to the program to prevent the
tracking cookies from being added.   While they might be regularly updated, it
seems like there should be some commonality that could be detected and
prevented.
Thank you.

SeaMonkey 1.1.14

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.19)
Gecko/20081204 SeaMonkey/1.1.14
The About SeaMonkey box reports what the browser actually is. The
user-agent string is what the browser tells a web site that it is. If
the user-agent string names FireFox, then many pages will display as
they would in FireFox.

No. If you go to the menu bar and select [Help About SeaMonkey], you
get the user agent string that SeaMonkey currently sends to Web servers.

In one of my profiles, [Help About SeaMonkey] shows
 Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4)
Gecko/20091017 SeaMonkey/2.0 NOT Firefox/3.5.3
I use this profile only for those financial institutions that
incorrectly sniff for Firefox instead of Gecko.

Using the PrefBar extension in all of my profiles, I can make [Help
About SeaMonkey] show the same Firefox spoof or show
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1)
or
Opera/9.10 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en)
or
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US)
AppleWebKit/525.19 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/1.0.154.48
Safari/525.19
or even blank.

Hmmm, it seems you are right. Sorry about that.

So now I am puzzled by what Bush is telling us about his wife's computer.

About WHAT ?

Simple ... I went to my wifes computer and pulled up the About Seamonkey
and it Showed she was using 1.1.14 and her computer can view the sites
that Seamonkey 2.0 Cannot View .

like the TV guide website .

Did I start a Can of Worms on my original POST ?

Note that there is no about:SeaMonkey for the address area.

What do you mean by this?

It is not that she is using SeaMonkey 1.1.14, but rather that the user

It's not an error. You had to have set a preference to say that you are
using Firefox 2.0.0.7 on Windows XP (which is the meaning of Windows NT
5.1).

ps...

When I had Xp and Seamonkey 1.1.18 I was able to get into the Blm

I first went to Blm site Way back in 2002 when I started Research on

that site and even printed out a copy of the Deed , So I guess I SPOOFED
seamonkey to read as seamonkey 2.0 . SEVEN years before seamonkey 2.0
was released .

Way back in 2002, the site had to be different. They upgraded (??)
the site sometime in the past 7 years. You never noticed because, when
that happened, you were already telling Web servers that you were using
Firefox.

Does not make any Sence that I could So Called SPOOF an earlier

What about Win 7 and Win xp thing ? I will have to Check and see if

You got right in because the UA string which *you* reported in another
thread is incorrect. Someone, either you or someone with access to your
machine permanently changed the UA string. SeaMonkey will not do this
by itself.

SeaMonkey is not going to report a UA of an antiquated version of
Firefox without user intervention. If it was not you, it was someone
with access to your machine.

I dare you to try creating a new profile in SeaMonkey 1.1.18, and see if
you can get in.

Create this new profile, and report it back here. It *will* show the
correct UA for SeaMonkey.

Lee
I already created a new profile and it Reads the Same . I even
uninstalled 1.1.18 and Deleted all files and even wiped the folders .

And dowloaded Seamonkey 1.1.18 again and installed it .
Remade the profile . and here is what it says

SeaMonkey 1.1.18

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.23)

Yes you did - you spoofed Firefox just fine:

Gecko/20090825 Firefox/2.0.0.7

Now, toddle along enjoy your ignorance.

But if you'd really like to understand what/when/where, why not try
being such an ass and work with the folks who are _trying_ to help you?

Please click 'Help|About SeaMonkey' and tell us what shows under
'SeaMonkey 1.1.18'. Don't be afraid, you can copy and paste the result
here. My guess is that it will show:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.23)
Gecko/20090825 Firefox/2.0.0.7

and you'll find that Firefox/2.0.0.7 is *not* a valid/normal UA in a
standard SeaMonkey install. Somewhere along the line you, or whoever
installed SeaMonkey for you, added the Firefox/2.0.0.7 into your
profile for Firefox spoofing. That's not necessarily a bad thing
(subject to some debate), but just understand it is *not* standard and
is there for Fx spoofing.

Seamonkey 1.1.18

It only works because your user agent string reports Firefox, not
SeaMonkey. Heck, here it is from your headers:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.23)
Gecko/20090825 Firefox/2.0.0.7

Blast it, it says Firefox, not SeaMonkey. That is the only reason it
works for you.

Open 1.1.18, click ToolsSwitch Profile. Use that to open Profile
Manager. Create a new profile, call it Test. Open 1.1.18 in that test
profile, and try to get into the sites you say work. You will fail.
Click About SeaMonkey and check the string. It will say SeaMonkey
1.1.18, not Firefox 2.0.0.7.

Try it and lets put this nonsense to rest.

SeaMonkey does display the site. Note the OP's post, click o one of the
shows in the listings at the bottom. It is supposed to give information
on the show. Without UA spoofing, it shows a block white box.

Nice Red colors ... as stated it works fine .

Is that working for you? Also, try your government site on your wife's
computer.

Yes there are no problem with the Blm site .

And by the way All my wife does on her computer is Read and Send email

AHA!!

Note, *userset*!!! Note that the pref is probably in bold.

That tells us that a user has changed the default setting.

Right click on the pref and choose reset. That will set it back to the
default setting.

Lee

yes the whole line was in Bold ... Everyone in my home Has their own
computers . I am the only one who uses this one .

Could it Be that Win 7 uninstaller left seamonker 2.0 setting in the
Registry ?

look at my answer when I went to my wifes computer that has Seamonkey
1.1.14

I Sent her about seamonkey to me

SeaMonkey 1.1.14

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.19)
Gecko/20081204 SeaMonkey/1.1.14

http://www.tvguide.com/listings/default.aspx

and the above link works on hers. I almost got Killed for waking her up.
Almost hat a tiger wood situation ..

You think I am a Dick or pulling your chain. But in No way did I So
called Spoof Seamonkey .

I admit, I am getting frustrated, but I sense we are getting some light
at the end of the tunnel.

The SeaMonkey UA will say SeaMonkey 2.0. Here is mine, note I am on a Mac:

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4)
Gecko/20091017 Lightning/1.0pre Mnenhy/0.7.6.0 SeaMonkey/2.0

Your wife has SM 1.1.14. I suggest updating that to 1.1.18, by the way.

The TVGuide page does seem to work without spoofing, but note Danny's
original post, with the following:

When looking and the program listing if you click on a show it will
display a opening that show a description. However, in Seamonkey if just
show a blank.

Just tried my computer at tvguid and clicked a show showing on HBO and I
get a RED box with a desription of the movie .

So, rather then just opening the page, you have to go to the program
listings, then click on a show to see details. If SM has its proper UA,
it will show a blank space. If it is spoofed as FF, it will work.

I wish it were Daytime.. I would go try it on my wifes computer . But I
do not need her Chasing me down the driveway with a Golf Club .

You, or someone using your computer did change the UA. There is no
other way for this to happen. I can see how SM *might* reset to its
default on its own, but there is no way it will change the UA to an
antiquated version of Firefox on its own.

Sorry .. I do all the computer repair here . And no way did I mess with
any setting other That What is in the Menu's .

FF 2.0.0.7 was released over two years ago. It is certainly possible
that you had a problem viewing a site, were advised to reset the UA to
the then current version of Firefox, and, over these more then two
years, forgot that you had done it. I know that I can not certainly
swear to things I did over two years ago.

I got interested in my Family history, After I lost my hand. on April 1,
1998 . And I created a cd that I gave to all my relatives ( starting
around 2001) with the info I discovered . and a lot of that info came
from the Blm site

I only started having problems when I installed seamonkey 2.0 , It
looks suspicious to you, But I have never installed Firefox or
thunderbird on any of the computers Here . But that is Beside the point
Because when win 7 was released ( I bought it From microsoft ) I bought
a new Sata Drive . installed win7 pro and then Seamonkey 1.1.18 Then I
saw that 2.0 was on the seamonkey site as the Current release ..
Uninstalled 1.1.18 and installed 2.0 . Had too many problems access
e-mail and certain sites, So I uninstalled 2.0 and reinstalled 1.1.18
and Now u say I spoofed it ...

Anyhow, if you reset the pref in about:config as I described elsewhere,
you will find that reverting to 1.1.18 is not an answer to these kind of
problems.

Right now I donot think I should mess with something that is access
all the websites . I know u are trying to figure out WHY . and I hope
your Conversations May help the develpers figure this out in the Future .

Thanks for the help Lee .I may answer some more of you inquiries later.
But typing with one hand makes the good Hand Hurt .. I already lost one
hand and do not want to loose the remaining one .

From here if I select to hide the tab bar when only one tab is open,

This is an obvious case of faulty browser sniffing.

When I go there with SM 2, I get a three-line display:
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a000d'
Type mismatch: 'CDbl'
/Frameworks\Classes\Browser.cls, line 134

This is bug #419907, submitted almost two years ago (27 Feb 08) and
still not fixed. See
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=419907.

If you (JAS) can view this site okay with SeaMonkey, you are likely
spoofing Firefox. If so, you are not helping to fix the problem because
the server logs for that site do not indicate attempts to access via
SeaMonkey.

This is in SeaMonkey, right? Those confused directions are for Firefox
on Linux. (EditPreferences as opposed to ToolsOptions.)

EditPreferencesPrivacy SecurityCertificates

Click the Manage Certificates button.

I always did think the traditional Preferences window was far superior
to the Firefox/Thunderbird version.

However, I got right in with SeaMonkey, no cert warning, no exception
stored.

When you got the warning page, was there not a link to add an exception?

NO... Only a OK button. The older version of seamonkey gave me a
choice to accept or Not.

I already used the info in Seamonkey . And did notice that the steps
were different . But in the End I did the Exception.

Now off to Fix the Blm error... I seem to think that there was an add-on
to the Versios 1.1.1X that let me Emmulate IE for certain Sites from
within Seamonkey . The pull down was VIEW IN IE .

I am using Windows and XP PRO and SM2 and have browsed around the site
with no problem.

This is an obvious case of faulty browser sniffing.

When I go there with SM 2, I get a three-line display:
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a000d'
Type mismatch: 'CDbl'
/Frameworks\Classes\Browser.cls, line 134

When I go there spoofing Firefox 3.5.3, the page displays.

SeaMonkey.

As I stated when I created this post .

Win Xp Home
Seamonkey 1.1.18

Was able to access this site.

Upgraded to

Win 7 professional
Seamonkey 2.0

Cannot access the site ... Both are the Same computer

Tryhttp://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/. It did not give me a
certificate error.

On the other hand, I removed Quicktime more than a year ago. I was
tired of having to upgrade to correct security vulnerabilities. The
capabilities of Quicktime are found in a number of other applications
that don't seem to have so many dangerous bugs.

IE 8 even tells me the Certificate has problems . The issuer IS NOT a

Downloads and installs okay on SM 2 and Win XP SP3

IE 8 also has a problem with the Certificates at apple ( HTTPS is not
configured properly ) . But it let me download quicktime, But I have not
tried to install it, I want to fix the problem with Seamonkey 2.0
I reinstalled Seamonkey 2.0.. Now it Tells me that The Plugin Docs
site certificate has problems, Just as seamonkey 2.0 completed the
installation .

There are other sites that give me the same error that I originally
posted here .
Must be a win 7 problem because IE 8 also doesnot like the
Certificates or the Site Have Bad configuration .

Looks like I made a Big mistake by going to Seamonkey 2.0 and
Installing window7 professional .

That may sometimes happen when you try to load a msg the news server
isn't responding or your connection to the news server times out.

That is not necessary. It can happen when you have checked the box
'Don't delete any messages', which can lead to an increased load while
looking for new postings. Can last several seconds.

If you try to read a posting in that interval, the body will be empty.

I've noticed this on more than a few instances w/2.0 haven't
figured out what the issue is.

The issue is gone since i use 'Delete messages more than 60 days old'.
Infuriating, though, that this setting is needed. The behavior was
caused by https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=311774.

More often than not, if you close the newsgroup reopen and/or
restart the msgs will fetch and appear properly.

Clearing the cache should suffice. At least it was so for me.

to change it that I know of. Reset it to none and it connected
immediately so that leads me to believe for some reason it is resetting
itself thereby causing my problems connecting for mail. The newsgroups
though are OK.

Just thought I would pass it on in case others might have the same
problem.

It cannot be a Seamonkey problem , Since we have been using SSL since
2.0 Was released . And Then BANG it quits working with No 2.0 updates .

This has been a problem, but, unfortunately, only those with that
ISP can give specifics. I hae ATT Worldnet iservers set up, and they
are working without issues.

So you have SSL enabled on the account?

Lee

Yes, SSL is enabled

Now its working again, for how long?

Seems to be an att issue. For a work-around, switch the incoming port to
110, which will also uncheck ssl. The issue is intermittent, seems to be
regional and affects more than just seamonkey, so you should use the
work-around for now, until att gets whatever issue they have with
pop.att.yahoo.com fixed. Switch back to ssl/995 on occasion. If the
issue recurs, go back to 110.

Not just a mozilla thing .

Mailwasher cannot get the att yahoo mail with ssl enabled .

As stated it is an area problem. Even outlook Gets rejected Now !

Yes there is a tab bar, but only one tab is open. From here, if I
choose to hide the tab bar when only one tab is open, Mail/News honors
that, so if tabs are not being used, it should not display.

See other messages for possible uses of tabs in Mail/News. Actually,
this has been a much asked for feature, and has great possibilities.

The SeaMonkey team urges users of older SeaMonkey versions,

strongly urge people still using the old Mozilla Suite or Netscape

older software packages suffer from a large and steadily increasing
number of security vulnerabilities because they are no longer being

Sorry to contact you this way. You just responded to my post about
1.1.18 having problems. Because the View menu has disappeared from my

Also, I cannot click on anything in the browser as nothing happens.
Can't get to any sites.

I did and have been deleting the old SeaMonkey before installing a

By the way, I had this problem in previous releases but somehow it
went away.

This time, I am almost out of business. I have tried going back to
1.1.16 and 1.1.17, and reinstalling 1.1.18.

Any help is very appreciated.

Is the entire menu bar missing? Or just parts of it?

If the entire menu bar is missing:

1. You might be in Full Screen mode. Try using F11 to exit that
mode. F11 is a toggle for both entering and exiting that mode; you
might have accidentally hit F11 while reaching for the Backspace key.

2. You might have accidentally clicked on the nubby area (name unknown
to me) at the far left of the menu bar. If you see a small area
beginning with a right-pointing triangle, click on it once. This too is
a toggle. There is a toggle of this type for each bar at the top of the
window. Because of anomalous motion of my cursor -- resulting from my
use of a laser mouse -- I occasionally click on one of those toggles
when I meant to click elsewhere in the window.

first of all, its not a flashplayer box where you type your comments.
Flash has nothing to do with it. Its just an ordinary text box. Second,
the backspace works just like that in IE. I tried it and it works.
Therefore, there is something wrong at your end. Close SM, then click
on the windows start button, then run and enter:

seamonkey.exe -p

this will bring up the SM profile manager. Create a test profile. Start
SM using that profile. Does the problem continue in this profile.

When I try to write a comment to one of the stories , and Make a
Typo, And I use the Backspace Seamonkey CLoses the Blog.

Internet Explore lets me USE the Backspace to Correct the Typo.

I See ( In Seamonkey help) That the BACKSPACE is Used for a Shortcut
to Back... IE also uses that Shortcut..

Why doesn't Seamonkeys version of Flashplayer Turn off the
Backspace Key shortcut , Where The IE version Does?

first of all, its not a flashplayer box where you type your
comments. Flash has nothing to do with it. Its just an ordinary text
box. Second, the backspace works just like that in IE. I tried it
and it works. Therefore, there is something wrong at your end. Close
SM, then click on the windows start button, then run and enter:

seamonkey.exe -p

this will bring up the SM profile manager. Create a test profile.
Start SM using that profile. Does the problem continue in this profile.

then its probably one of those little glitches that happens every so
often, and it corrects itself with a restart of SM.

Thanks for the Wonderfull Tip .

Using SM .14 and just recently started getting the messages:

Mail server pop.att.yahoo.com responded: problem retrieving message.

I am still able to send emails, send/receive on newsgroups, just not
receive emails.

I checked the internet side of SM and my emails are at my homepage is

SM is just not transferring email to the mail/newsgroup side of SM.
Not sure if I have explain this well enough, but any help would be
great.

Auto is Off

try selecting Universal. I had the same problem and when I selected
that, all my problems went away.

Seems to work right now .
