Wow ! I didn't expect so many responses!

I guess I need to explain it betterdon't know
the buzzwords.
On the left of my Mail window is a pane titled
Names.
In that pane are my e-mail accounts and Local
Folders and News.Outlook.Express.
Under (within) News.Outlook.Express is
m.s.seamonkey - this group to whom I am
messaging.

A LONG time ago, I used to be able to get a huge
list of various newsgroups (?) with all sorts of
subjects in them to choose from - except I forgot
HOW to get to them.
This News.Outlook.Express has Mozilla and
Netscape as subgroups (right term?) - that is
all I can pull up with the subscribe function.

To be honest - I don't even remember how I got to
this Newsgroup ! It was set up ages ago and still
survives - as I do at 71.

I am trying to get to a group like this that can
explain why Windows XP keeps asking for a program
password w/o the program being activated.
It is like Win XP remembers an unrelated action
and repeats it ad nausium.

DoctorBill

Better explanation.
I have a lot of stuff stored as Screenshots (jpg
files) of Bank and Stock Market data.
I have a program to view and manipulate these
files (Graphics Workshop Pro - [GWP]).
I have Hide Files and Folders (HFF) which
conceals whatever folders you set it up to conceal.
I have set HFF to hide the folders that the GWP
can read - so only I can access them with a
password.
I invoke HFF and it asks for a password. i
provide the password.
HFF opens and I click on Unhide - now I can
open GWP and access my secret files.
When I am done, I invoke HFF, enter the password
and click HIDE. Then exit HFF.
Back to no one can see them - hidden (how I
don't know!)
Better ?
I know this is not for this Newsgroup - I'm only
asking HOW to find a Win XP newsgroup !

As mentioned by several people, first add a

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

From help, I found. (But first you will need to pick a newssaver.)

Open the Edit menu and choose Mail Newsgroups Account Settings. You
see the Mail Newsgroups Account Settings dialog box. You can perform
these tasks:

Add Account: Click this button to set up a new mail, news or blogs
news feeds account. Be sure to type the account information exactly as
it is given to you. Move through the screens with the arrows, or click
Cancel to stop account creation.

blockage

2014-02-08 Thread Not@home
I have Vista with SeaMonkey 2.24 (this problem has been present for
quite a few versions prior).

When I turn on the pc and load SeaMonkey, it goes to my homepage very
promptly. However, when I click on a link from my homepage, the new
page loads about 90 percent (the page is visible, but I can't scroll, or
do anything else). It says it is waiting for xxx (this varies) and is
frozen for anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes, then completes loading. Then
the problem apparently resolves, and I can browse normally with no delay
for the balance of my session. I don't have the problem on my other pcs
(one with Vista and one with Windows7).

Where should I look for elimination of this problem?

Browsing technique

2014-01-06 Thread Not@home
Here is my problem: A number of sites (CNN.com in particular) are like
an index in that they will contain a number of links to articles I want
to read. Assume the links are to site A and site B. When I click on
the link to site A the browser opens that site and I read the article;
then I select back to go back to cnn.com and select the link to site B,
but when the browser opens cnn.com, the link to site B is gone, having
been replaced by a list of other links.

I don't know how to find the link to site B, unless it makes another
appearance. Usually these are just items of minor or temporary
interest, so an internet search would not be an effective way to find
the story, since I usually don't remember the name. Is there a
technique in using SeaMonkey that will solve this problem? It would be
nice if SeaMonkey had a tool that would open both sites A and B, perhaps
in separate tabs, so I could read each site.

How long is your home page? If it is much longer than the view port
(the display area), can you scroll it immediately?

In my primay profile, I have a long home page (the result of exporting
my bookmarks to an HTML file); it takes 61 uses of the Page Down key to
scroll from the top to the bottom. On launching SeaMonkey, I can't
scroll, find, or do much of anything for a few seconds after the initial
display. (Actually, I can scroll about 10 lines before it refuses to
scroll farther.) I suspect this is a result of having very many
bookmarks. In another of my profiles, I have only 8 bookmarks; I don't
have any delay there.

My home page is CNN.com. It usually loads fairly promptly and I can
scroll in almost no time. It is when I go from there to a news item
that I get the delay, and my curser is frozen until the next page
finishes loading.

I'm no expert, but I have an extension named CheckPlaces 2.6.2 that I

help with what you want to do.

I agree that it would be useful to be able to search for a bookmark

When SM has finished trying to collect your e-mails, could you try
File-Delete Trash then File-Compact Folders and then try to download
you e-mails again??

Normally, SM downloads all you e-mails into a file called Inbox
(without the quotes) and these emails are indexed in a file called
Inbox.msf. When you delete an e-mail, it isn't really deleted, it's
just marked for deletion and doesn't show up in your inbox any longer.
It is not actually deleted until you do what I suggest above.

It maybe that your SeaMonkey is having probs because the files have
gotten too large.

If this doesn't fix your problem, report back and someone might suggest
something else to try.

After posting here I got through to my ISP and they checked to insure

My experience is that there are very few Java applets left on the normal
web. Most developers seem to have moved on to Flash or HTML5 presentation
-- with of course the over-abundance of JavaScript we see every day.
(Java and JavaScript are two entirely different things.)

You can see a safe Java applet here. If your Java is enabled, the time
display will tick-tock away; otherwise it's a static display:
http://time.gov/timezone.cgi?Eastern/d/-5

So the answer is: unless you know of a specific web site(s) that actually
do use Java applets, you can safely remove it - or at least disable it,
possibly via the use of the PrefBar extension (also makes it easy to
manage many other things, including en/disable JavaScript).
http://prefbar.tuxfamily.org

Now I'm puzzled. I went to the site you provided and got a static
display. I then went to a site I use (washingtonpost.com,
entertainment, crosswords, daily crossword, and it displayed a Java logo
while loading, and advised that if it doesn't work, you should update to
the current version of Java. If this site is using JavaScript, would it
display the Java logo?

All that is a function of the Web site. In general, the site is timing
how long it has been since the last time you accessed its Web server,
how long you have been inactive on the site. Some sites even allow you
to set the allowed duration of inactivity.

For financial and sales sites, this is a safety feature. You are logged
out after some period of inactivity to prevent someone else from using
your login. After all, many bank transactions or consumer purchases are
done online from the work place where other individuals are present.

I go to a web site daily, and it is often slow. I assumed this is
because they have a relatively small server. So would keeping yourself

Bookmarks

2011-11-28 Thread Not@home
I have a lot of bookmarks, most organized. But some I only want to keep
temporarily. When I want to keep one temporarily, I use bookmark this
page and the bookmark appears below those I have filed. For permanent
ones I use file bookmark. Since my touchpad skills are deteriorating, I
have taken to keeping bookmark manager open, as it is easier for me to
navigate. My problem is that the temporary bookmarks do not appear when
I open bookmark manager.

Is there a way to make them appear, or should I just create a folder in
the hierarchy to keep them in?

Not really a SM problem.

2011-10-21 Thread Not@home
I have three pcs. Two use Vista; one uses Windows7. I have the same SM
2.1.4 on each, and the same firewall/anti virus.

On the Vista machines, some we sites refuse to remember me, so I have to
log in each time I visit. On the Windows7 machine, the same websites
remember me, so I am already logged in when I revisit.

Is there some setting in Vista that I have wrong? Or could this be a
firewall problem (I use FSAV and I'm not really clear on what the
settings are, so I use defaults)?

Sync advise

2011-10-15 Thread Not@home
I have three pcs, two using vista and one using win7. While I have
always used them independently, they are networked. I want to be able
to coordinate my mail, bookmarks, addresses. So my question is if I use
Sync, will the end product reflect the data from my most heavily used
pc, or will it somehow use the data from the less heavily used pcs? In
other words, will sync allow me to select which profile to use on all
pcs, or do I have to copy my favorite profile to each pc before signing
up for sync.

A further complication. In looking around, I found that I have multiple
profiles on my primary pc. How do I find which is the one I am
currently using?

Validating bookmarks

2011-10-02 Thread Not@home
My earlier versions of SeaMonkey had a feature I could set to check a
bookmark periodically to see if it remained valid. That appears to be
gone in 2.4 and 2.41. I had a separate program that did the same thing,
but it no longer works properly with the latest SeaMonkey. (AM Deadlink
is the program; it will still check the bookmarks, but will no longer
correct them).

Is there an efficient way to validate bookmarks. I have about 2000 and
doing it by hand is a lot of work.

Is the PDF file opening with the same method between your wife's pc and
yours ? I think about this: On one pc the pdf file is opened inside the
SM screen. On the other pc, the pdf file is opened inside Acrobat
Reader
started by SM. The way of managing a pdf like this 2 possibilities
is an
option inside Acrobat Reader.

I make SM to open pdf outside by acrobat and no problem

Did you say that now your problem is solved ?

no, that was not me.
I suppose pdf take the same amount of cache regardless they are viewed
in a window of SM or not

I cleared the cache (under preferences, advanced, cache) and barred that
site from setting cookies, but the problem remains.

On my wife's computer, which works, the site opens as if it was another
copy of seamonkey showing the pdf. I.e., at the top of the screen is a
tab for seamonkey, and a tab for the pdf.

On my computer, the pdf opens as if I had gone to another site. I.e.,
the pdf is the only open screen and to get back to seamonkey I just use
the back key.

(A lurker is someone who reads the messages in a newsgroup but never
posts there. Lurker is NOT a disparaging, negative term. Indeed,
everyone is encouraged to lurk in a newsgroup for a while before staring
to post. Some estimates indicate there might be as many as 10 lurkers
for every individual who posts.)

A lurker in this newsgroup sent me a private E-mail. He suggests the
following (in my words):

1. Open Adobe Reader.

2. On the menu bar, select [Edit Preferences].

3. On the left side of the Preferences window under Categories, select
Internet.

4. On the Internet pane, uncheck the Allow fast web view checkbox.

5. Select the OK button.

I have NOT tried this. When I reached step #4, I noticed that the
Connection speed selection indicated 56 Kbps, the speed of my dial-up
connection. I changed that to 1 Mbps; my cable modem supports 1.4 Mbps.
When I then went to view the hotel guide for Madrid, the entire page
downloaded to SeaMonkey in one continuous operation, unlike the way it
downloaded in my prior reply in this thread.

You might try the lurker's solution, but I suggest you also check what
Adobe Reader thinks is your connection speed.

Thank you and the lurker. I made the changes to adobe reader (including
the speed), then went to the site to check it. It loaded so quickly I
sat there for a few minutes waiting for it to start, then realized it
had already finished.

So I am all fixed and can get back to planning our trip to Spain.

Log in change

2010-11-11 Thread n...@home

I use Seamonkey and currently have 2.0.10, with windows vista.

Until the last few updates of Seamonkey, when I went to a site I had had
Seamonkey remember the password, my id and password would be inserted
with no action on my part.

Then something changed and I had to enter the first letter of my id to
get the memorized data. This was a little inconvenient (I have a lot of
ids and tend to forget them), but I learned to live with it.

I was also able to select remember me at the site, and I would be logged
in already when I visited.

Now remember me no longer works, so when I go to a site where I have
asked to be remembered, I'm not, and I have to log in (Seamonkey does
remember my data, if I can remember the first letter of my id.

This hassle is happening on multiple sites; fodors.com for example. The
sites do not appear to have changed anything (not that I could really
tell), but that I am having this problem at many sites makes me think
there has been some change in Seamonkey that prevents the remember me
function from working.

What can I do to get this to work?

I just started up seamonkey and got a warning (I didn't notice whether
it was from Vista or my virus protector) that someone, who they couldn't
identify, was trying to install a program. They gave the name of the
program as, I think, installer.exe, and suggested I not allow it to
install unless I knew the source. So I crossed my fingers, sacrificed a
chicken, and let it install. It was the seamonkey update.

My suggestion would be to change the generic name of the program to
something like Seamonkeyinstaller.exe, so I would know it was safe to
install. The media is full of stories of people attacking our pcs, and
anything that would lessen our worries would be most welcome.

If you can't get the rayv sorted out (I use linux so have to resort to

http://www.cupinfo.com/en/ac33-tv-schedule-and-webcasts.php

The snippets I have read said the first two attempts were canceled
because of light and shifty winds, although I saw one report that the
second was canceled because of rough water (3 foot waves; apparently
these racers are too delicate for any wind or waves). Anyway, I got up
this morning and decided to check my email before turning on the RavV,
and there was email from cox saying that they had added ESPN360 to my
package, so I went there, loaded their video player, and voila, they
were showing the third race, which had been postponed a couple of hours
because of light and variable winds, but said they were starting to pick
up. The race soon started, and except for some rather major mistakes at
the start, was well sailed. Alas, the US boat appeared to outperform
the Swiss in every aspect, and won by a couple of miles. I don't really
have a favorite, but I like tight racing and it doesn't look like this
series will have any.

So I am about to rid myself of the RayV, and see what else ESPN360
offers; I think I saw something about Formula 1 on there.

But I fear I have gotten far off topic with this, so I will close by
thanking the community for its help.

What is the ISP involved? Is this a POP account or IMAP? I don't suppose
you were trying to access the same account from two computers at the
same time?

Lee

The ISP is cox cable. It is a POP account. And I only use one computer
at a time. After posting my problem, I tried to email a friend and
could not send email either.

I have blundered into a solution. Because I use email daily, I was able
to conclude that something I had done the day before was the likely
cause. I am a fan of America's Cup racing, which is going on now. They
don't televise it in my country, but they have a website that you can
watch it on, if you install a program they offer: RayV video player, and
I had installed it, and it worked well. After installation, when I
boot, my FSAV reports that the RayV video player wanted to act as a
server, which they indicated might not be a good idea, but I authorized
it anyway. I didn't want to remove RayV until the regatta was over, so
I rebooted and when FSAV asked if I would allow RayV to be a server, I
said no.

That solved the problem. So when the wind picks up and they start
racing, I'll allow RayV to act as a server and do without email for a
few hours, then reboot and not let it act as a server until the next race.

Thanks for the suggestion about IMAP; I'll see if cox provides that
capacity.

Re: test

2010-01-09 Thread n...@home
I apologize for making the above post. In the past, when I travelled, I
was unable to receive email or newsgroups directly. I had to go to the
website of my provider and read email there, and just do without
newsgroups. That was the status through years.

Now I am away from home and was visiting a website when the email alert
went off. It surprised me! I opened the news reader and somehow all my
email was there. I have no idea whether this is due to a Seamonkey
upgrade, or to something my ISP did.

I went ahead and read my email, then read this newsgroup. I didn't look
at the other newsgroup server I use for some other newsgroups.

I was happy, because it is a lot easier to read news and mail here, than
on my ISPs web page. To see if I could use the newsreader to send
email, I sent the above to myself, and erroneously to this newsgroup.
The email failed, but the newsgroup posting worked. This morning I
tried to use my other newsgroup server, but was denied access as I
needed a password. I'll look it up when I get home.

But for now I can read email and read and post to this newsgroup, but
cannot read or post in other newsgroups, nor send email from the reader,
which I can work around by sending it from my ISPs web page.

I'm not technologically adept, and have no idea why this change has come
about.

Welcome to the SeaMonkey Support newsgroup. f you have any issues in
using the Seamonkey internet application suite, by all means ask here,
and we will try to assist you.

There is a specific test group on this server, mozilla.test. It would be
best to post test messages there.

Try Philip Chee's modified version at
http://xsidebar.mozdev.org/modified.html#scrapbook. Note that you
also need his xSidebar extension installed. Philip hangs out here, in
case you run into any trouble.

Thanks. I couldn't find the xsidebar extension, but when I downloaded
the scrapbook file it went ahead and installed, so either I unknowingly
had the xsidebar extension, or it is automatically loaded with the
scrapbook version. Now I'm off to find some sites to copy for our next
trip.

Would such a program that is compatible with Firefox also work with SM?

If not, what is a good method to capture some websites so I can use the
information on them when I am away from the Internet? My technical
abilities are limited.

I use a program called Local Website Archive. I install it on a flash
drive and carry it in my pocket. That way I have it wherever I go and on
any PC that has a USB port

You can get it here: http://www.aignes.com/lwa.htm

Danny,
Thanks. I downloaded the program but haven't installed it yet as I'm
going to try the sidebar first, since I have worked with it before and
won't have to be trained.

Auto fill in SM 2.0

2009-12-05 Thread n...@home

I'm not sure auto fill is the proper term.

In prior versions of SM when I had to enter a username and password, it
offered the option of saving them (except on some financial sites where
that authors had apparently blocked it). When I next went to the site,
the information was automatically entered, if I had authorized saving it.

In SM 2, the information is not automatically entered until I put in the
first letter of the user name, a minor hassle when one has multiple
usernames, and not, in my opinion, an improvement.

My real complaint, however, is that SM now is memorizing what I put into
other fields, and I cannot find a way to control this. My aged fingers
often make mistakes, and I now have about five versions of my address,
one of which is spelled right, and anything else I have ever entered
that has the first letter of my address: my user name, once I guess the
right first letter, is an embarrassing litany of every misspelling I
have made, and this apparently will keep growing like a cancer. So how
can I delete the many misspellings and the extraneous words that pop up
now, short of going back to an earlier version of SM?.

Re: Anti-Virus Suites Compatibility

2009-11-24 Thread n...@home

I've had good results (as far as I know) with F-Secure, but it is not cheap.

Hello all, I Am trying to figure out which anti-virus suites work well

IE and I cannot figure out how to change that.

Then it came to mind to find out here, who uses what and a consensus is
on the better suite. I was using Kaspersky, which was fine, I wanted to
find if something else out there is just as good.

Re: help with seamonkey installer

2009-08-15 Thread n...@home
When you boot the computer, does it boot into safe or normal mode. I
seem to recall that once you are in safe mode, you have to reboot and
select normal mode to get into normal mode.

I'm not sure, but I think you cannot install programs in safe mode,
probably because is has minimal capabilities and is primarily for diagnosis.

Updating bookmarks

2009-06-29 Thread n...@home

I have Vista and SeaMonkey 1.1.17.

Over the years, I have built up a collection of bookmarks organized by
subject, which works for me, but makes it a bit difficult to find a
specific bookmark by name, rather than by subject. I didn't bother with
updating them, mostly because when I established one, there was no
apparent way to set it up to update.

Recently, when I manage a bookmark, I set it up to update late at night
on a given day. Alas, the options to mark the icon when there is an
update do not appear to work, or at least I cannot find any of these
markings. Now I set them to notify me, but if I am not online when the
check is run, I get no notice.

Recently I got a laptop and as I travel a lot, I am often online when
the update runs, and I get a slew of notices, but I can't find a way to
OK them and have the bookmark updated, so I make a bookmark of the new
site, but not knowing where I put the original bookmark, I end up with
extras.

I am wondering if there is a security reason that I would not want an
old bookmark updated automatically, and if not, what would be the best
way to have the bookmark automatically updated without interrupting my
browsing, possibly annotating the bookmark that it was updated from XX
on this date.

So what is the most efficient way to keep bookmarks updated?

Re: Saving web sites

Thanks for the advice. Both methods worked, but I like the scrapbook
system a bit more because of the bookmarking. I should have asked
earlier and saved myself a lot of time.

sites be updated, nor that their links work, I just want the information.

I've been taking screenshots of each page, making them into a jpeg file,
and storing that, but it is a lot of work as many sites I like have
multiple pages.

I use Vista and Seamonkey 1.1.16. Internet explorer is on the machine,
but I don't use it enough to be familiar with it. Is there some way to
save web-sites so I can read them when off-line, or would this use too
much of the limited storage on the typical laptop?
