2020-01-22 Thread Aafia Irfan Beg
Hi

I'm MCA 2nd year student from Integral University Lucknow
I have passed BCA from Integral University Lucknow with overall 9.13 Cgpi

This will be my first time to participate in GSoC. I want to contribute to
Sympy Org as I have interest in python and very passionate to make career using
this language in Datascience field.

I am currently learning from Analytic Vidhya "Machine learning using python"
which cover statistics, linear Algebra and python libraries.
I had Discrete Mathematics, Graph theory and probability and statistics as
essential subjects in BCA.

I more willing to learn new techniques and put full effort if someone could
guide me with how to start contribute to Sympy.

Thanks

2020-01-13 Thread Bhumanyu Goyal
Hello everyone,

I am Bhumanyu Goyal, a sophomore Under Graduate student of Computer Science
and Engineering at IIT Mandi. I have been working with python for 2 years
and have done some minor projects in python related to Data Science and
Deep Learning. I am a Deep Learning and Data Science enthusiast. I
generally use Python libraries like numpy, matplotlib, scipy, sklearn,
Keras, TensorFlow, etc, which made me get in touch with sympy and I was
impressed by how elegant and clean yet powerful the framework is.
I also have a deep interest in mathematics and have had mathematics in high
school and my current undergrad degree also, so I'm very excited to start
contributing to this open-source library which combines both my passions,
i.e.programming and mathematics.

It would be really kind of community to guide me for where and how to start
contributing so that I can get the most out of my skills.

Warm regards,
Bhumanyu Goyal.

[sympy] Introduction to Sympy Community

2020-01-09 Thread Adarsh Kumar
Hello Everyone,

I am Adarsh Kumar, 2nd year undergraduate student in Mathematics and
Computing at IIT Kharagpur. I want to contribute Sympy for this year's
GSoC. Some of the relevant information about me are as follows:
1. I have around 2 years of programming experience, working with Python, C,
C++.
2.I have deep interest in Algorithms, Machine Leaning, Deep Learning, and
Mathematics, have strong hold over Python.
3. In Mathematics, I am particularly interested in Uni-variate and
Multivariate Calculus, Differential Equations and Probability.
4. In the past, I have completed college level courses on Ordinary and
Partial Differential Equations,Transform Calculus, and Design and Analysis
of Algorithms. Currently I am doing courses on Probability and Statistics,
Numerical Solution for Partial Differential Equations, and Discrete
Mathematics. I also have done Introductory course on Linear Algebra.
4. I don't have much experience working with SymPy in the past. But I am
quite eager to learn that.

I also have some queries in my mind:
1. For GSoC, can our proposal address more than one Ideas, as given in GSoC
ideas page?
2. Where to look up, if a particular algorithm is already implemented or
not, other than in Documentation?
3. Can someone please suggest some good sources to develop a proper
understanding of 'Computer Algebra'?

Regards
Adarsh Kumar

[sympy] Introduction to SymPy Community

2019-12-24 Thread mcpl snu
Hello. We are the researchers in Microfluidics and Coating Process
Laboratory (MCPL) in Seoul National University, South Korea.

We have been developing a package for fluid mechanics for a year, which
depends heavily on SymPy.

Our expertise is in fluid mechanics and chemical engineering, and education
level varies from Ph.B to Ph.D.

Our interest is focused on enhancing the extendability of SymPy (which is
already great!).

I asked them for laplace transform to solve differential equations in my GSoC
proposal but I don’t think it’s required. I additionally said to include
residue theorem /Cauchy’s integral formula too.

Hello,

My name is Orestis Vaggelis and I'm a sophomore mathematics student on the
National and
Kapodistrian University of Athens. I have a 1 year of Python experience and I
am very excited, that I
am able to combine mathematics and programming on an open source project, and
(potentially) help other people with my contribution! I am very interested on
expanding the ordinary differential equation solveset and I would love some
feedback on a few ideas that I have!

1) Firstly, I read the ODE docs and I think that, currently Sympy does not have
a way to solve an
ordinary differential equation or simultaneous differential equations
using the Laplace transform.
3) Implement solver for the legendre equation.
2) Implement Sturm - Liouville form, which can apply on the Bessel equation,
the legendre equation and on many other cases.
4) Implement Finite difference methods to convert a linear (non-linear)
Ordinary Differential Equation into a system of linear (non-linear) equations,
which can then be solved by matrix algebra techniques.

I will keep looking for more things to implement, but if you have something in
mind, please don't hesitate to let me know !!

Re: [sympy] Introduction to community

2019-10-15 Thread Oscar Benjamin
Hi Orestis,

It's great that you would like to contribute to SymPy. There is plenty
of work to be done on ODEs. For your suggestions I think that possibly
the simplest would be implementing a solver for the Legendre equation.
I would recommend to start with fixing the simplest thing possible
though and adding a new solver like for the Legendre equation is
possibly not something best to try for a first pull request.

There is a list of open issues for ODEs here:
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/labels/solvers.dsolve
I don't know if any of those should be considered easy.

We also have non-ODE issues that are labelled as "easy to fix"
although not all are actually easy:
https://github.com/sympy/sympy/labels/Easy%20to%20Fix

[sympy] Introduction About Myself

2019-10-07 Thread Radhe Raman Tiwari
Hello Everyone,

It's stated that I Radhe Raman Tiwari is a Computer Science Student who is
having a passion to work towards Open Source Community and SymPy is a great
Community to do so, because I have a passion in mathematics especially in
algebra and calculus, Calculus is the most interesting topics which I like
most and in order to solve calculus problems mostly algebra comes into
picture and in algebra, the basic thing which I like most the equality
between left-hand side and right-hand side which makes the concepts very
clear that's why I like calculus and algebra most in mathematics.

If I talk about SymPy it's awesome because of Sympy does as we do with the
help of pen and paper it makes things like we use to solve the mathematical
expression( *i.e *differentiating *y = x^2* with respect to *x *and it
gives us the result *2*x *which is same as we give.) And the details about
myself are the following.

   - The level of familiarity with python is OOPS concepts and standard
   libraries.

   - The experience of programming with Python is 1 year.

   - The Projects which I did with the help of Python are following

   1. Rice Crop Insects And Weed Detection And Classification Using Faster
   R-CNN

   2. Classification and Analysis of Unstructured Data for Windows

   3. Classification and Analysis of Unstructured Data for Ubuntu

   - The mathematical education understanding level is my undergraduate
degree which is, I am pursuing right now.

   - My familiarity with SymPy is that generating expression by writing
programming tex, solving algebraic expression and finding their root,
integrating mathematical expression and many more.

   - The level of familiarity with symbolic math systems is an
   undergraduate degree.

   - I am native in Hindi and professional fluency in the English language.

And the last but not the list I am looking forward to any such kind of
opportunities from SymPy which makes me an Open Source Contributor thanks
in advance.

Hi all, an introduction first as requested per etiquette: I have been
programming since the early 90s and coding Python specifically since 2001.
I am a dirty uneducated high school dropout but since math is fun I've
studied up to basic PDEs, vector calculus, linalg, some complex analysis
and abstract algebra. I wound up looking into SymPy after playing with my
own CAS (just to learn) and getting up to polynomial factoring before
deciding to adapt the front end for something a little more complete (SymPy
:)

I am posting to present my project for consideration to be included in the
list of projects using SymPy, which is esentially a graphical front-end /
calculator / scratchpad for SymPy. It is at an early stage but functional
enough to be useful for anyone doing a lot of math I think. Bug reports,
feedback and suggestions are welcome of course.

The project is called SymPad and is available on GitHub at:

[sympy] Introduction and GSoC '19 : Expanding the Crypto Module

2019-04-02 Thread Vishnu Bhagyanath
Hi! I'm Vishnu Bhagyanath. I've recently started contributing to SymPy.
I've made a couple of basic PR's so far to get a hang of the workflow. I've
read the student instructions and followed it. On submitting a PR I noticed
the crypto module had been a bit blank and left untouched for months on
end. I felt this could be expanded and improved and have done a bit of
research as to what might be feasible in this module.

When free, could one of the mentors kindly review my application which I
posted on the wiki as a separate page.

 I've
detailed all my experience and project details in there! Kindly suggest any
improvements and suggestions which can be brought to the document!

My experience with the community has been great so far as everyone is
helpful and positive (: . Would love to continue contributing here.

2019-03-31 Thread AADIL MEHDI Sanchawala
Hello, I am AadilMehdi Sanchawala. I am a CSE student at IIIT Hyderabad,
India.
I have been using python for over two years and am quite proficient with
it. I have implemented many game patches, a computer vision project on
Organ Detection during Surgical procedure using OpenCV and a question bank
generator for job interviews that parses the candidates resume and the job
description to generate interview questions. Apart from this, I use python
for a major chunk of my coursework implementing machine learning and deep
learning algorithms.
I have studied in the CBSE curriculum which is known for its mathematical
rigour and have taken courses on Discrete Mathematics, Complex and Real
Analysis, Graph Theory, Linear Algebra and Probability Theory.
I am enthusiastic about computer vision and its applications in robotics
and am doing my honours in the same. I am particularly interested in
machine learning and deep learning applications of problems using
reinforcement learning to program embedded devices.
I have used Sympy for solving differential equations in some of my Course
work projects and am hands on comfortable using it.
I would like to contribute to the organisation because I am interested in
Science and Research in science. Coding out algorithms and making them
efficient is something that excites me. I would like to submit a proposal
for GSoC 2019.

2019-03-22 Thread Mohit Balwani
Dear all,
My name is Mohit Balwani and I am a second year Information and
Communication Technology undergraduate from Adani Institute of
Infrastructure Engineering (Gujarat Technological University) India.

I have 4 years of experience of coding in Python and have excelled in all
mathematics related courses. I have studied (including both High School and
College). I have particularly high proficiency in Mathematics (qualified
for Mathematics Olympiad at the regional level) as well as Physics.
Moreover, I love learning about differential equations and calculus.
Furthermore, I have done a few projects on Machine learning in Python.

I am relatively familiar with the SymPy code base and have also made a
contribution regarding a bug fix. I am keenly interested in ODE and
Solver's projects. I would like some guidance regarding how to move ahead
with these projects. I am very enthusiastic about becoming a part of SymPy.

This is my GitHub profile: https://github.com/Mohitbalwani26

[sympy] Introduction and GSoC 2019 Application

2019-03-21 Thread william_zhang
Hello all,
I am a first-year at Harvard University. I have 3 years of programming
experience in Python, primarily from coursework and competitive
programming.
My CS coursework at my university includes Artificial Intelligence,
Programming Languages, Data Structures and Algorithms.
My mathematical coursework includes Linear and Abstract Algebra, and Real
and Complex Analysis. I also have an undergraduate knowledge of topology
and multivariable calculus.
My statistics coursework includes a course on measure-theoretic probability
and a course on stochastic processes.
My area of expertise is in probability theory. I currently have little
experience in developing symbolic math systems, but I hope to gain some
with GSoC.

A project that I'm interested in working on would be adding symbolic
manipulation with stochastic integration, particularly with Brownian
motion. I noticed that this has not yet been included in the statistics
module in SymPy.

[sympy] Introduction and Project Ideas

2019-03-18 Thread Animesh Sinha
Hello Sympy developers,

I am Animesh, a First-Year student studying Computational Natural Sciences
(A dual degree in Computer Science and Natural Science) in International
Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, India. I have been writing
code in Python and C++ for over 6 years now, and in this duration I have
written a couple Django websites, tried a few Artificial Intelligence
courses, and some other things most of which you can find on my GitHub
profile (github.com/AnimeshSinha1309).

In college I use Scipy, Numpy, Sympy combo everyday as my course is
oriented around Computational techniques to solve Physics and Math
problems. Having just finished a course in *Classical Mechanics* this
semester, pulls my interests in that domain in the Physics module of the
Sympy project. I am relatively new to Sympy development, and have managed
about 5 Pull requests
.

Currently, I am trying to work on Hamiltonian dynamics along with
attempting to put together a GSoC project on Efficiently Generating
Equations of Motion with Python using the Featherstone-Jain method.

Here I would really need some help, for I understand what we are trying to
do, and I know the Lagrange and Kane methods by hand, I am *really unable
to find any good resources on the Featherstone-Jain method* that has been
described in the Idea document. Any advice on how I can make progress will
be appreciated.

Thanks a lot to everyone.

Sincerely yours,
Animesh Sinha.

Re: [sympy] Introduction and a question

2019-03-10 Thread Oscar Benjamin
There probably is a better way of doing this in your problem but I
just want to point out a way to "manually" extract parts of an
expression. Let's create an expression with a few parts:

In [1]: a, b, c, x = symbols('a b c x')

In [2]: p = a*x**2 + b*x + c

In [3]: r1, r2 = solve(p, x)

In [4]: r1
Out[4]:
_
   ╱ 2
-b + ╲╱ -4⋅a⋅c + b
─
 2⋅a

Okay now suppose I want to get the discriminant out from inside the
square root and do something with it. I can use the .args attribute of
each sympy expression to drill down to the part I want like this:

In [5]: r1.args
Out[5]:
⎛_⎞
⎜ 1 ╱ 2 ⎟
⎜1/2, ─, -b + ╲╱ -4⋅a⋅c + b ⎟
⎝ a ⎠

In [6]: r1.args[2]
Out[6]:
_
   ╱ 2
-b + ╲╱ -4⋅a⋅c + b

In [7]: r1.args[2].args
Out[7]:
⎛ _⎞
⎜ ╱ 2 ⎟
⎝╲╱ -4⋅a⋅c + b , -b⎠

In [8]: r1.args[2].args[0]
Out[8]:
   _
  ╱ 2
╲╱ -4⋅a⋅c + b

In [9]: r1.args[2].args[0].args
Out[9]:
⎛ 2 ⎞
⎝-4⋅a⋅c + b , 1/2⎠

In [10]: r1.args[2].args[0].args[0]
Out[10]:
  2
-4⋅a⋅c + b

In my real problem, d is an arbitrarily complex expression I'd rather not type

[sympy] Introduction

2019-03-10 Thread Anubhav Sachan
Hey!

I am Anubhav Sachan, a sophomore (4th Semester) student in the department
of Electronics and Communication Engineering at National Institute of
Technology, Silchar. I was going through a lot of projects and
organisations in GSOC, when I came across `sympy`. Since I have particular
interest in Classical Physics and python, A project named "Classical
Mechanics: Efficient Equation of Motion Generation" and the generalization
of the mentioned project fascinated me, and I would love to contribute in
them.

I have been involved in various projects in the field of python
programming, machine learning and web development. I can consider myself at
the intermediate level of python programming since I've been coding in
python for the past two years, in both competitive and development field. I
have been using sympy for my personal projects (currently undergoing). I
would very much like to contribute to `sympy`. You can have a look on my
github portfolio at https://anubhav4sachan.github.io

Thank You,

[sympy] Introduction and a question

2019-03-09 Thread Mark Juers
I'm a 4th-year PhD student in evolutionary biology at Indiana University in
Bloomington, IN. I've been using Python for about a year for various
biology projects and am working on a package related to my dissertation
work. I am looking to replace Mathematica with SymPy in my workflow. I use
Git and Github for my research projects and for personal projects,
dotfiles, etc. as well.

Now for my question. Suppose I have an expression like the following:

from sympy import *
var('a:d')
w = Wild('w')
test = a * (1 - c) + b * (c - 1) + d

I'd like to rewrite test as (a - b) * (1 - c) + d
I tried test.replace(a * w - b * w, collect(a * w - b * w, w)), but this
does not work.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

[sympy] Introduction to the community

2019-03-05 Thread abishek . seshan2017
Hello everyone,

I am Abishek Seshan, a 2nd year Computer Science undergrad in VIT Chennai.
I have always been extremely passionate about mathematics, and that's
exactly what led me here. I have been programming(mainly mathematical
problem solving) in C++/Python for over 3 years now and have recently
started to learn about development programming and ML.

Calculus(integral and differential) and Number theory are some of my
favorite areas in mathematics and I consider myself to be "fairly" well
versed in them. I chose to be a part of Sympy community for GSOC'19 since
there are many amazing project ideas that piqued my interest, and I'd love
to contribute in any way I can. This is my first time in GSOC and since I'm
new to Github and Open Source, I intend to make the most of this
experience. I haven't previously worked with Sympy but have already started
to get to know about it. I'd be obliged if someone shows me the way so that
I can start contributing.

Regards.
