Good morning. Sometimes memory does kick in. A number of years ago I played around with a program called autohotkey. It may very well be what you want. Re: from window eyes to jaws to NVDA
I guess that depends on what you use. It's just down right terrible with Thunderbird. NVDA at this point is the best screen reader with TB. Tom has already commented about the UI. It still amazes me that FS's stupid installation program overwrites the shortcut every time forcing us to reset the shortcut hotkey. I have WE, JFW and NVDA on this machine with none of them starting automatically. At this point in time I use NVDA the most which does surprise me some. It seems reasonable to me to receive some support for costly programs. I decided to put Jaws on my laptop. I'd forgotten that I needed the code instead of my serial number to activate Jaws on the laptop. The email with the code came from a different address from the order so I was having difficulty finding it so I thought I'd try to call for help. I chose activation help from the menu. They had wait times so theyir system gave the option for them to call me back. Guess what, they never called me back and I finally found the code. It looks like their was a bit of a support honeymoon period once they dropped WE but it seems to be over already. VFO doesn't seem to be any better than FS. They could have learned from GW and AI since they bought them out but they just don't seem to be interested in any ideas that don't come from their old group. Re: Upgrading to win10
Hi. This isn't Rod but I have an answer. Your files stay where they are. All my Thunderbird folders, desktop items, data folders, etc are exactly where they were before the upgrade. Note that if you have the computer item on desktop it will be renamed to "this pc." The only problem I had that took a long time to fix was Window-eyes being in startup programs. I did not have it start after going into Windows but it would come up on the login screen. The WE sound kept crashing my machine. The MS answer desk rep helped fix it once I figured out that it was the WE sound that was crashing the system. Good luck. Re: typing passwords with jaws
Sorry to be a bit of a crab but a novel idea might be to practice typing until you get good enough to type passwords accurately. I've been working with blind students for over 10 years. They know from the beginning that they need to get good enough with the keyboard to correctly type passwords. They do the work to get better which pays off for them in doing all of their computer work. The copy and paste method of enterring passwords is interesting. However, if people have enough skills to do that they may be close to being able to type them in. Re: window-eyes open source?
Hi. What you said makes sense. For me there are things that actually work better in NVDA than they do in Jaws which surprises me quite a bit. If you use Thunderbird's message list NVDA does a far better job than Jaws does. If you delete an unread message from the list Jaws rereads the information from the message you deleted. I tried using the Jaws convoluted UI to try to fix this but gave up after close to an hour. NVDA does not do this and also tells you how many messages there are in a TB folder. I so far haven't found a web page in Firefox that works better with Jaws than it does with NVDA. I'm still hoping for pleasant surprises from Jaws but I'm not holding my breath. I believe in having a commercial screen reader because those companies have more resources to keep up with Microsoft. However, at this time I'd find it hard to recommend the purchase of Jaws to a friend or student who has limitted financial resources. On 9/11/2017 2:09 AM, David via Talk wrote: You know, I too am tempted to believe, NVDA will take over some screen reader users. For one thing, as NVDA becomes yet more powerful, and widely known, it might happen that paying authorities or cherities, will refuse to pay hundreds (or in translated version thousands) of dollars for Jaws. And due to the dominance VFO currently has on the asistive market, they can raise the price as they desire. No. NVDA is far from good enough for a professional run, in a work position where effeciency counts. It does come short when comes to certain pieces of software, and it takes some modification and scripting, to have it up running. Jaws is, like it or not, a full-fledged screen reader, in many cases working somehow right out of the box. Sure, I did say somehow. Not even WinEyes did always work right out of the box; or why did we get the app feature of WinEyes, do you think? But for the general home user, who wants to write and read emails, who has already invested in a scanner and OCR software, and who needs to perform general activities on the net (paying bills, checking the weekly offer of their favorite store, and lookup something on Yahoo or Google)... For those users, I am ready to say NVDA already will be close to good enough. I don't really see too much that Jaws performs, or does better, than NVDA on that front. VFO bought AISquared, and in effect GWMicro. Since the agreement of the merge is not publicly known, we do not know how that all came around, or what was the thought behind. Who initiated and so forth. < IF the intension was to grow bigger, they really managed; for the time being. Was the idea of it all to control the market? Well, somehow maybe they have currently managed. But there is something about being the biggest and only one in town. You also will have to deal with ALL the queries. And, though the world map looks far more International today than two decades ago, many customers are facing ecconomic issues that might affect their chances of buying a wildly priced product. Somehow, we could think this to be some of the consequences of the WEForOffice program, which did open up for even the less bolstered wallet to provide the needy one with a full-fledged screen reader. Now that this program eventually will be obsolete, NVDA might be the choice -even the ONLY choice - for many a private user. Or, they might - if their activity does not rely solely on Windows - leave the whole computer world together, and go mobile. The somehow dominant position VFO has taken at the moment, might hence not be the fact we see tomorrow. That will all depend much on what happens in the electronic world all generally. A decade ago, prior to the first IPhone, everyone would have claimed that Windows was here to stay. Then came the first IPhone, then the IPad, and today many a user does not even own a computer any longer. Recently, I did see a relatively up-to-date Android device, straight from the store shelf, with all warrantees intact, advertised well under 100 dollars. Turn it on, hold two fingers anywhere on the screen, and your device is fully loaded with a screen reader, in less than five minutes. Just HOW well will Jaws face that figure? Buy yourself a computer for anything from 300 to 1500 dollars, invest another 1200 dollars of software, add on 1200 for the screen reader; spend an hour or two in installing, licensing and updating your brand new pet. Guess you see my point. You do all of this, should you need to. But for the user who doesn't need to? Further, keep in mind, that many who turns blind today, already are quite familiar with Android and Phone/Ipad products. Being the kind of equipment many - even school kids - now aday are acquainted with, they might not even have the skills needed for starting out with a computer. Turning blind today, you don't have one or two years to spend in a special institution for the blind, hoping to learn something old-fashioned, then imagining yourself getting back into

Re: Reciprocal Idea
You've made a good point here. In WE it was quite easy to use the mouse move by clip commands to find the graphics to label yourself. It also has a feature to pass the mouse over graphics to pop up tool tips to auto label those graphics. You can label graphics in Jaws but I have no clue how to go about doing it. Since VFO now owns WE it would be nice to think that they would look at it carefully to find some of the good Ideas that went into WE. However as of now there seems to be no evidence that this might happen. It seems that in the FS world that only good ideas come from inside the bubble. Over time I'd love to be proven wrong. I'm not holding my breath. There's really nothing reciprocal about this situation. It's up to us to figure things out. I've found that Jaws and Thunderbird don't work well for me. I have tried to adjust some Jaws settings to make it work better without success. I'd like to figure out what I need to do to use Jaws with TB. WE crashes TB on my system while NVDA seems to work like a champ. Try NVDA with WLM and see if you can get it to work more to your liking. For me it's easier to work with all three screen readers than it is to figure out some things in Jaws. Re: Thunderbird message amounts
Hi. I don't know of a way to do this. WE and NVDA do this without making changes but Jaws just doesn't seem to handle this list in the same way. I've actually stopped using Jaws with TB because there are also other issues that are there. At this point in time it seems to me that NVDA works the best with TB since on my system WE crashes NVDA if you go too fast with key presses. Re: move to jaws
I'll have to agree here. Using JFW with Thunderbird is quite disappointing to me. JFW can't give message counts or indexes in message folders. NVDA does this very well. WE in my opinion works better with TB than JFW does except for the fact that TB often crashes when using WE. For me the commercial screen readers have problems with TB that NVDA overcomes. I'm glad I now have all three screen readers to use since each of them has deficiencies for some programs. Re: Jaws hot key undefined after update
That's how they do! It's always been that way so why should they adjust what they do? Their installation rewrites the shortcut even if one already exists. In my opinion this is just lazy on the JFW's team's part. How hard would it be for them to check for an existing shortcut and at least keep the existing one? When you install NVDA there's a checkbox where you can decide to keep the existing shortcut or have a new one created. It's not hard for us to reset the hotkey but it's a little annoying to have to do it when all other screen readers handle this in a much more convenient way. Re: Migration of Features?
We'll have to see if pieces of WE find there way into JFW. Don't hold your breath. In the first place there would have to be some recognition that WE has some things that may be better than they are in JFW. I'm not convinced that there's such recognition. They didn't buy AI Squared to pick up WE features or ways of doing things, they wanted ZT, WE was just there. I hope they'll consider changing things like their page navigation scheme. As we know in WE the insert-tab brings up the list of elements but we can shift-tab to a list of elements to change to. In JFW you use insert-f7 for links, insert-f5 and insert-f6 for different elements. Even NVDA has used the WE logic in this. We'll just have to see if they have any intention to really look at WE features and implement them. I won't be surprised at all if they just follow their existing course. I think most of us feel like strangers to JAWS and that would go along way in feeling at home with JAWS assuming they want to keep the customer database as satisfied customers. Afterall, Window-Eyes already has a Jaws keyboard layout. How difficult is it for VFO to have created a Window-Eyes keyboard layout which would make learning Jaws and getting up to speed with it a whole lpot easier? I'm missing how this whole flipping thread is directly related to Window-Eyes! Is this the WE discussion list or a general Windows list now? So principles have their limitations. Virtually all of the privacy issues can be disabled. I'm not a fan of what Microsoft has done. It's not as if Microsoft is making us pay for the upgrade! It's free for Heaven's sake! IE11, Firefox and Chrome are still there, so access to the internet will stay the same, as will word processors and e-mail programs. "My Computer" or "Computer" is now called "This PC". So? There are so many options that allow a person to configure settings, the Start screen and menu, the Search box, the Taskbar, This PC... The Desktop is still there. Privacy settings and Cortana can be turned off, indeed, Cortana is not available with all the privacy settings turned off so that Microsoft cannot get its eyes, ears and fingers into the computer.. I had sighted help for the actual upgrade, and I did ask my tech to take off all the stuff on the right side of the Start screen, only because he could do it far faster with the mouse than I could with the keyboard. When I called the Microsoft Disability Desk with a question about something, the guy commented that my screen looked exactly like Windows 7, which is how I want it. If I have to tab or arrow around five times to get to something on the right side of the screen, that's not an efficient use of my time. Get it off my screen! Smile. If someone does not know where something is, or what it's called precisely, the Search box is a wonderful resource. Google is still my Home Page, and Google is still my Search Engine. And the Search box on the Start Menu in Windows 10 can be set to exclude the internet, so do I care if Microsoft uses Bing to bring up internet results. If I want the Internet, I go to my Google Home Page and ask Google. Smile. A sighted person may want Cortana, but Window-Eyes already talks to me! I Don't even remember, I am so raddled by this whole sudden thing, I cannot for the life of me keep it all straight. But the latest is, that since I downloaded and installed the latest toolkit, Weather or Not now runs. But here is where things get very frustrating. When I go to the apps menu, I only see apps that are running, not the ones that aren't. Now, that is probably the way that it is supposed to be, I'm not sure because I hardly consult the apps menu unless I need to make a change to either Winamp, or Weather or Not. After all I, like many of us WE users like to set and forget. But the point is, that I only see apps for four programs, Weather, Toolkit, Winamp, and Tb enhance. And yes, now I actually hear the Thunderbird logo when starting the program. However, I do not have Windows enhance, or any number of apps that were listed. I guess all I want to know now, is just what to do next. I'm thinking of just uninstalling WE, and doing a completely clean install. surely that will set things aright. But then again, I really want to avoid this if at all possible. I really can't figure out just what I did, that is if I did anything, to make this happen. My toolkit was up to date, because I have WE to notify me when updates are available, and I'm very good about that. But obviously something just went haywire round here. Hopefully things can finally return to normal with all of your kind help. If all of the above makes very little sense, please check the time stamp on this message . I really did feel a kind of elation when at least the weather app actually started to work, but WE sure seems a bit lame without the full functionality that it has with all apps and engines working on all Cylinders. Re: how to hide search box in windows 7
Hi. I agree here. It is very useful. I'm curious why hiding this would have any purpose at all. It only comes up when you hit the Windows/start key and disappears with the escape key. And now Doug and Dan are with their third company together. I remember that I really wanted a Sounding Board from Computer Aids Corporation which Dan designed. Here's a thought. Did you ever consider that it really is more prudent to put out support when it's much more ready for prime time? Re: Opinion on moving from paid version of WE to free version
Hi. Actually you would need to purchase a license for Dectalk. Actually you've already made the large investment by buying WE in the first place. For me the cost of an SMA is worth it for the tech support and the delivery of cds for upgrades that use an SMA count. You also can get your licensed upgrade quickly. Ok, the servers got hammered at first but you've had WE for a while and probably have had quite a few upgrades while you've had your SMA. I would rather have an agreement with GW/AI for my screen reader. MS has nothing to do with it this way. The free option is really fantastic for people who can't make the initial investment in their screen reader but in my opinion its value decreases for those of us who are working with the licensed full copy. Listers, I have been intending to post this question for a very long time, but just never managed to do it. Maybe having a rather out of date system With WE 7.2, and somewhat bound to IE 6, if I remember precisely, I thought this might have been attributed to some new quirk, or an Inadequate aspect of the old browser, but I ran into this issue this morning on the following URL. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3069645/Jimi-Hendrix-s-drum-kit-memo rabilia-sold-pittance-repossessed-lock-wife-didn-t-pay-fees.html The issue is constantly repetitive lines throughout the reading of the page. I also gave some consideration to the idea that WE was at fault here, but after taking a look around, it turns out not to be so. Therefore, I guess my question is as follows. Have any of you found a way to filter out these instances of repetitiveness, or do you, like me, just grit your teeth and suffer through them? These kinds of pages aren't the kind I find myself visiting all that often, but some times a story catches my ear, and like everyone else on the Web, one link can so easily lead to another - you get the picture. But this is not all that unusual in my experience. And it doesn't matter all that much what news service you might look at, this issue pops up periodically. If anyone could shed some light, or give me some kind of work-around for this issue, I would really appreciate it. Re: Changing rate on the fly
Good morning. The WE hotkeys have not changed. However you must have an Intel display adapter with its hotkeys enabled. Prior to WE 9 the Intel keys override the WE hotkeys. If you upgrade to WE 9.1 your ctrl-alt-arrow keys should work in WE. If you stay at 8.4 you'll need to disable the Intel hotkeys. There is an article in the knowledge base explaining how to do this. On 3/20/2015 7:34 AM, Mike Rogers via Talk wrote: I think I remember somebody on the list writing about different hot keys to change rate temporarily. It use to be control-alt-arrow keys. Re: bluetooth issue.
Hi. Another thing to try is to activate the backup synthesizer. You can do this without speech with the following key strokes. 1. ctrl-backslash to go to the WE control panel. 2. alt-h for the help menu. 3. s for speech and braille recovery 4. a for activate backup synthesizer. I can't try this with a bluetooth dongle because I don't have one. The only possible problem could be that Windows forces the bluetooth dongle to be the default sound card. If this happens the only way to use this thing is to pair it with headphones or a speaker. Good luck. On 3/16/2015 9:00 AM, Rod Hutton via Talk wrote: Hi Billy, Did you ever have a pair of headphones or speakers paired with it? There's no trick. Have you opened different pages with similar results? Are you loading a page where you're automatically put into a search box so bm is turned off like the default FF start page?
