[OSM-talk] Ito World offers expanded Coverage for OSM Mapper to include Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australasia, South America and Canada
I am delighted to announce that we have now increased 'OSM Mapper' coverage to include Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australasia, South America and Canada. More details available on our blog: http://itoworld.blogspot.com/2008/08/expanded-coverage-for-osm-mapper.html If you don't know what 'OSM Mapper' is then a good place to start is to check out our original announcement: http://itoworld.blogspot.com/2008/07/new-osm-mapper-for-openstreetmap.html Btw, we are only leaving the USA out for now because it is a very large dataset and we need a bit of time to allow this new expanded area to settle down and then the USA is next on our list. Do subscribe to our blog to learn about future enhancements to the product and coverage. For those of you who noticed the problem with our daily update for a few days last week, you might be interested to know that this was caused by a big increase in the size of the European dataset when a new large bulk import arrived which exploded our import process and prompted us to do this work a little earlier than we intended! We should now be back with regular daily updates and sorry about the inconvenience in the mean time. We have also made some minor improvement to the product's functionality: we added a link to the OSM feature browser so you can see more details about a feature and its history, we have fixed some problems with accessing pages without first having signed in our site which caused problems for RSS users in particular, we have improved the map quality by drawing selected features on top and we have improved our bounding box algorithm to stop large features such as long ferry routes from appearing incorrectly in area reports. More details on our blog soon. If you have any suggestions for the product then do please add them on the OSM wiki here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/OSM_Mapper Regards, Peter Miller Ito World Ltd www.itoworld.com ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

I have no particular views either way, just that as maxspeed was already in use I thought that routing applications would understand it, whereas another tag such as time or duration would mean routing applications having to adapt to this. Having said that its much easier to know the time a ferry crossing takes rather than work out the speed of the crossing Yes, best not to try to be too smart. If the ferry has a scheduled departure and arrival time the crossing_duration= should be good enough. The speed can be worked out by computation in the routing app. In many cases you need to consider ferris timetables. Some ferris also have check in or check out times. crossing_duration= is in those cases a valuable information, but does nor say anything about the travel time in total. Same goes for river crossing ferris. Some of them operate only at certain times of a day, and they will only cross the river if there is need for or if they have a minimum load, lets say 2 or 3 cars. In other cases we could find also trains or other means of transport to bring a car from a to b. We should consider them to in some way. I realized that it wouldn't take a great deal of changes to have OSM fill this much needed role. I started to put together some suggested procedures and other ideas that would increase the quality of OSM data and allow it to provide base map layers for a traditional GIS. I'll be trying out some of these ideas and procedures on a OSM mapping project near my home in Stockton, California. Here in the US, we have the wonderful benefit of a great deal of public domain map data, because of federal sponsorships like that. Would it be possible, instead of putting this data directly into OSM, to set up a separate database/webserver/API stack for the collection of data under a public domain license? OSM could then certainly use this data, but the main database's public domain-ness would not be compromised by the viral license. thanks, -natevw ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

The disadvantage here is in renderer complexity, and keeping up with all the rules. Re: [OSM-talk] Connecting ferry routes to roads?
Good point. I would suggest that the cars are carried on public transport along a 'route' defined using the route relation of type=railway. I would suggest that the road network is connected to the railway station at each end and possibly also to one or more railway platforms (but that is not yet an approved feature). A route then needs to be created linking the stations with motorcar=yes. In time we can then define timetables for trains on this route between these stations. We can also define bicycle=yes for routes where bicycles can be carried etc. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Relation:route A similar approach could be implemented for Dover ferry terminal. We would need roads leading to the various quays, each being the start of a route to Calais. The routes would have motorcar=yes and type=ferry. Does that make sense? Re: [OSM-talk] Path rendering in the cycleway
Hi, why fix it later, that creates extra work? and what do you mean 'fixed'? i thought having them mapped with one of 3 different tagging schemes was a good thing? I agree with Dave's responses so won't repeat them. Just a few extra points: no-one's forcing anybody. lots of people use map_features for a reason. they clearly don't want to spend time coming up with new tags, cos it's boring and tedious - they want to map, cos it's fun and interesting and involves being outside. There's nothing against documenting what tags are in use. I'm all for doing that, and if I find a tag in use that's not on Map Features, ord used differently than described in Map Features, I will add it there or make the change. I just reject any normative component - tags are on Map Features because they're used, not tags may be used because they're on Map Features. if people wanted to come up with new (duplicate) tags, they would be. thankfully, there are very few duplicate tags As Dave has said, it really is a matter of your level of abstraction. I agree with you that having two different tags for absolutely the same thing is perhaps unnecessary. But if someone, after having this pointed out to him, would prefer to continue using his tag - that's fine, maybe he has a reason; maybe is an expert in the subject matter and knows that the existing tag is misleading or imprecise. He must be allowed to use whathe thinks is right without people requesting him to justify his actions. But most things are not exactly the same, just 95% the same. You say: i would put a note, and get one of two responses: this isn't a duplicate, it's similar, but different enough (e.g. cemetery vs. graveyard), I think my main point is just that the decision whether something is duplicate or different enough should always remain with the mapper. make 49% of them unhappy and/or unwilling to map the item in question. hold on, what do you mean unhappy? says who? 49% might well be the worst case, but what's the actual case? it could be 10%. or 0.1% As you say, people map because they like doing it. Some like to be told what to do, others' enthusiasm is ruined if someone says to them that they should (for example) use highway=traffic_signals, crossing=traffic_signals, bicycle=no, segregated=no, crossing_ref=pelican instead of crossing=pelican. (By the way: I have removed the notion that crossing=pelican was deprecated from they Key:crossing page - OpenStreetMap does not have a body that has the power to say a tag was deprecated. I thought we had this discussion before?) If someone has mapped 500 crossings with crossing=pelican because he finds this sensible and along comes someone to tell him his tag usage was deprecated because 10 others who, taken together, have mapped perhaps 50 crossings think so - what do you think, will this person really continue to work with the same enthusiasm? In OpenStreetMap, we do not normally sacrifice individuals for the sake of some greater good - at least not if it is easily avoidable.

Habe die ersten Ergebnisse schon bei Openstreetbugs gepostet. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Qualitätssicherung Cheers Gary68 Gerhard __ Do You Yahoo!? Sie sind Spam leid? Yahoo!
