Re: [OSM-talk-be] Touring Mobilis and OSM
It's just a background picture, they don't use our data. That's defenitely an OSM map they are using. At the bottom right you can see: powered by : http://www.giscloud.com/ and they give openstreetmap credit. Of course the layer on top is their own. I don't think it's 'our' data anyway, so afaik. They are perfectly ok to do this That's Touring-Secours/Wegenhulp, isn't it? No, it's not. It's Mobilis. Check the site -again. It's strange to do that without contacting us first. There is no requirement to do this. It happens that I'm going to write them tonight and mention OSM. I'm going to mention this in particular. Why ? Jo It's a weird way to me to create a map like that but they are indeed only using the tiles, but they aren't caching them, quick look in firebug: tiles come directly from: http://c.tile.openstreetmap.org/16/33595/21946.png And so on. Of course it is great they tend to prefer OSM originated maps. I guess it's the way one would use Googlemaps' tiles. Maybe we should contact them to explain the technical details, but I'd prefer we prepare a letter/note on the wiki and send that to them. Otherwise they might get an incoherent cacophony of messages from all of us. I honestly don't see a _REAL_ issue here. First of all, they are not 'our' servers, we should at-least agree on that first. So the OSM mailing list as such have no direct interest nor we are involved in any way. Secondly, we don't know if they talked with the tileserver folks or not, maybe they did get permission? It doesn't look ok for the community to interfere, we should find out more information first before slapping wrists. They do give OSM credit, which is most important from a license point of view. [OSM-legal-talk] GADM and Bolivia
I'm sure we're all overjoyed to have this come up again... Background/refresher: GADM is a global administrative boundary dataset under a non-commercial license. Some people imported data from it into OSM, not realizing (or not caring) that it was incompatible with CC BY-SA, ODbL as well as any open license. At the time of the redaction we found this out and Simon asked about Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Turkey, Uganda, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Syria. We received permission for Turkey, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Ivory Coast, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Syria but GADM couldn't grant the rights in Ecuador, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, and Mozambique. While looking at something else I came across an import of administrative boundaries from GADM in Bolivia. This was not identified at the time by looking at the wiki, so we never asked GADM about it. The one changeset I've identified is http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/3993096, by LLAQWA, the person who imported Ecuador GADM data that had to be redacted. Previous efforts to contact him were unsuccessful, so I see no point in trying again. Simon is skiing, so what I propose doing is contacting the person from GADM who replied before, and if they can't grant permission then it'll need to be redacted. I was unable to identify any way of contacting the Bolivian community, or even if there is one. I don't think that it changes much anyways - if we can't get permission, we need to redact. ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

[OSM-legal-talk] Advice regarding terms from an agency
Hi. The National Land Survey of Iceland has made their data free of charge and offer them as downloads. It spans numerous datasets which would be invaluable to the mapping progress in Iceland. However, there are terms which must be agreed before access can be legally obtained. The terms state that a distribution and publication permission is required for every further distribution or publication. I've talked to them today and the ministry to drop this condition in the terms and the director of the agency offered what I discuss in the next paragraph. The director of the agency responded to an e-mail I sent and has said attribution in the Contributor's page (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Contributors) suffices. The terms as they are now do state all derived works need a copyright symbol and the name of the agency (unless the agency asks otherwise, which I think they will invoke in our case). But the agency also wants the terms to be displayed on said wiki page, including the condition that a special permission must be obtained for every further distribution or publication of those who retrieve data (for Iceland) from the OSM database. I suspect that such a condition is not in the spirit of open data but nevertheless I decided to inquire about it anyway. Would such a condition for data be acceptable for data contributions? If the terms would be on the wiki page, would they be legally binding for whoever downloads the data? The terms are displayed at http://www.lmi.is/almennir-skilmalar/ so you can get the full picture. There should be a Google Translate option at the top of the page. Re: [OSM-talk] POI display on osm.org
Hi, A feature catalogue requires a very different approach to using the map, though: The user has to be quite methodical to first decide what they are looking for, then open the appropriate category in the catalogue. My approach while looking on a card is, searching for information. So I know what I'm looking for and therefore would verry like the a catalog with categories. Re: [OSM-talk] talk Digest, Vol 101, Issue 80
Tobias Knerr: However, the approach with the very large and prominent markers on openstreetmap.ru can only really be used together with the feature catalogue. If every single POI in the map were to be represented like that, the screen would be flooded with markers. A feature catalogue requires a very different approach to using the map, though: The user has to be quite methodical to first decide what they are looking for, then open the appropriate category in the catalogue. Spontaneous spatial exploration would not happen. So it's not a given that it would be the right user interface for osm.org. But aren't we currently rendering POIs on a map layer, with labelled icons? I'm sure those two approaches can be combined. For that the Mapnik grid renderer approach looks interesting. For the POI/data inspection tool I think we would need vector tiles approach instead of a regular fire SQL for given coordinates approach but of course this does not mean that Roland's solution does not apply - if it can be scaled for production and nicely integrated into the Rails Port then why not? Unless of course the argument is that the site should be able to do absolutely anything that a random visitor might ask of it - make tea? mind children? order books from amazon? I don't see what this has to do with the history view either - being able to efficiently explore changes in an area is clearly something of huge interest and usefulness to mappers.

=P Just my 2 cent.
