I hope it will turn out to be this way consistently. Then, we might
have a chance of eradicating it.

My memory of it is that occasionally in the past, smileys in the
middle of lines have been omitted. Although, I can't right now recall
a specific message as an example. Or, Smileys at ends of lines within
a paragraph where the full paragraph was quoted, were dropped.

But, can't be sure. I just have a strong memory of it's having
happened. Unless I dreamed it. ;)

Anyway, I can't thank you enough for taking time with it for me!

Confirmed. And, in fact, I have been using that technique quite a lot
in my TBOT correspondence.

Occasionally, though, even that will fail. :woe:

Still, having that piece of information in the mix--it's never been so
explicitly demonstrated before, to my knowledge, so thank you,
:thankyou: very much for this input!--might help de-bug the bug.

When I get time this afternoon, I'm going to do a search of Bug Track

I can't remember whether I made a BT report. At the time that I was so
upset about it, no one would confirm it.

Then, later, others (MAU here on TBBETA) and Curtis (on TBOT) ran into
it. We had some discussion, but I know that I did not go to BT with it
then.

Either Maxim or Marek--or one of the developers, I'd have to do a
search to say from whom I had the reply--said that it wasn't fixable,
for some sort of technical reason.

I'll try to see if a search of BT will turn up any report. I really
don't remember ever making one; I think if I didn't, it was because of
the reply from the developers.

Confirmed, but I don't think you were experiencing the bug which has
been fixed in 3.51.9. I think not quoting the very last one is an
instance of an old bug which has been too elusive so far to track
down.

This bug has been around at least since v. 3.0.

It happens randomly and, also, for considerable stretches of time will
not show itself. Therefore, I say it is random and infrequent.

Making it all the worse, because one is lulled into skipping the
change to PTV before quoting (the only work-around that I know).

In some replies to messages, this omission of a Smiley leads to
misunderstandings that range from minor to serious.

I *do* so wish that we could hunt this bug down! :(

Up and running, quickly and easily.

My quoting bug in messages decrypted using PGP still exists.

If I choose Reply or Reply to all, only the salutation and signature
are implemented normally from the Address Book Reply Template for the
contact.

Work-around: Use Select (Highlight) text and then either F4 or
Shift-Plus-Reply button.

The problem appears always since v. 3.51.5, whether using RTV or PTV.

In MicroEd.

Possibly similar to the now-closed issue in

Encryption/Decryption problems both quoting and sending [was Re: The Bat! 3.51.6 is now available]

>>> encrypting messages lately (messages have been changed after

>> Are you encrypting using pgp?

Thanks for the information. Hope your bug gets pinned down soon.

I am still looking for someone to test for and confirm mine:

In a pgp-encrypted message that I receive, when I choose Reply/Reply
to All after decrypting the received message, the MicroEd editor
window uses all my template for that contact except for quoting the
original message.

Not a show-stopper, because I can select (highlight) all the message
body and then use F4 or Shift-plus-the-Reply Arrow-button to quote the
entire message or such selected parts as I wish to have in my Reply,
and TB! quotes normally.

But still, quite annoying when I want the whole message quoted in my
Reply. Entails being careful not to quote below the sig delimiter, or
if I miss, highlighting and deleting the original message-sig.

This is now happening for me only when I am Replying to a
pgp-encrypted message that I have decrypted and am viewing in the
decrypted window.

Previously (I believe it was in v. 3.51.3 and then soon fixed) this
type bug was also in messages I had received in the clear. Mentioning
that, in case the present behavior is related. That report is now
closed:

http://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4907

I take it that you have not encountered this new problem which I am
experiencing with PGP, in messages encrypted in GnuPG, Henk?

This information from you might help narrow down where my bug is
located. TIA

P.S. I double-checked my Reply template several times. It is intact
for this contact as well as for all my other Address Book Reply
templates and the Reply template is functioning normally on text that
did not have to be decrypted.

There are quite a few other people who *do* experience this problem
with v. 3.51.1 through 3.51.4.

Did I miss something, that I didn't see you telling them in those
earlier posts that you are not experiencing the behavior?

It's in the charset/unicode new functionality that is only partially
implemented in MicroEd that the bug seems to dwell.

Stefan has said that it's possible they are going to do a complete
unicode re-write, starting from scratch:

mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm going to wait for that beta and run 3.0.2.10 in the meantime.

Too many misunderstandings have already arisen for me from this bug.

Yes, but when you said it wasn't happening to you, it sounded as if
you doubted that it was happening to me--at least, as a result of a
bug in TB!

So, I wanted to know whether you did not see my malformed message and
did not believe me that it is a bug.

Additionally, it will--or did, when I used to run 3.51.4--drop
characters in the View Folder screen without any Reply having been
invoked--drop them on first viewing the message.

Well, Peter Hampf has just cleared that up.

All the same, it's happening--missing characters--and not just to me.

And in my own posts! Above, I distinctly recall typing "I don't really
know in this case" and the rendering has dropped the "in."

A fix may have to wait on Stefan's promised re-write of MicroEd and
Unicode, if that's where the fault lies.

At this point, I haven't seen anyone write that he/she can really tell

I don't really know, this case. The "a" between "tbbeta" and "fun"

However, I am getting a lot of 1 or 2 character omissions in my folder

1280 x 1024--necessary for optimum display on this flat screen.

But, I was able to increase the font size somewhere--I've forgotten if
it was in WinXP or in TB! I need both character size and the contrast
between type and background enhanced over ordinary display, else I
have to put my nose within 4 inches of the screen. And that's not
really fun. :)

MB>> Every day's a schoolday, here. :)

On a different topic: I am getting quite adept at interpreting what
looks like typos in the View Folder and MicroEd's Edit Mail Message
window.

Nevertheless, these missing characters (above, "tbbeta a fun") are
getting to be a real pain. The Bug Report page (4904) asks for
Feedback, but I don't know what is wanted in the way of Feedback
there. :woe:

I'm using a QT combination to replace german national characters (Umlaute)
in the subject. The QT is a "replace" function, and the parameters for that
function (the actual characters to replace, ä to ae, ü to ue, etc. etc.) is
passed in the comment header.

Its a rather old QT (someone on TBUDL gave it to me ages ago, I think it
was Dan Grunberg). I have to rewrite it to use custom (%_something style)
macros one day.

Some listmailers (that tag the subject) will add the list tag over & over
again and can't remove multiple occurencies of "Re:" if the subject is
encoded because it contains national characters - to avoid these problems,
I added the replace function to my signature.

Now, this function is not really required for english messages of course...
so I simply don't use that QT in my english signature QT anymore... it was
that simple, oh my... :-)

I don't understand at all about Comment, having never used it. On my
AB template, below my name, I have the following (without the
quotation marks that I've inserted into this message):

"The Bat %THEBATVERSION on %WINDOWSPLATFORMNAME
"%WINDOWSMAJORVERSION.%WINDOWSMINORVERSION %WINDOWSBUILDNUMBER
%WINDOWSCSDVERSION"

If you're just trying to construct something that works, you might try
that.

On the other hand, you may be trying to figure out what has gone wrong
with the Comment template, and in that case, please just ignore my own
comment. :)

As far as I can recall, I got my template as a copy-and-paste from
Marck D. Pearlstone, when I first got TB!, v. 1.61, in October, 2003.

Greg, just a thought: v. 3.51.4 made a hash of ASK's sig template;
what if it has disabled your Reply template in a similar fashion? And
then, when you went back to earlier versions, that disabling action
was still conserved?

Hi Greg,

In the message which was
apparently written on Saturday, July 16, 2005, 5:26:11 PM. I believe you wrote:

In some respects having it non confirmable by others makes it more
annoying as if everyone can reproduce it, chances are it will be
relatively easily solved. If it cant be, then well where can it
start..

While I dont suffer this one, I have plenty of my own.. I sympathize.

Keep us posted. :)

Problem wasn't there for me in v.3.5.36 or in 3.51; showed up, for
me, in v. 3.51.3.

Thanks for the information. This was exactly my situation in 3.51.3; I
think it's important to find out why it's still broken for you. And I
think the BT issue report should reflect that, for at least one user,
it is still broken in v. 3.51.4.

(I inserted the text to be there in the last message with C&P since the

 %Comment="some text"or

does nothing.

 %Setheader("Comments","some text")

You might like to put a note about your experience at
http://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4907

This issue is reported fixed in v. 3.51.4 there and is in status
Resolved.

But, if you still are getting this "empty message" bug, there's bound
to be a reason, even if others here (including me) can't confirm it.

Could it be (just thinking out loud) that you accidentally got a
faulty download of v. 3.51.4?

Or, is there some other aspect of "empty message" that the fix of
issue no. 4907 did not address? I think it's important to track this
down. It's a near-showstopper so far as useability is concerned.

Greg, this is a bug that I believed was fixed. I can't test with F4,
because the F-keys on this keyboard won't work.

However, Shift-plus-reply does quote selected text for me normally.

Thomas, this is an elusive bug which bites only when least expected
and it will be part of The Bat! from now on, I suspect.

But, just to verify that also you did have "Use Smileys" enabled
(either "Smileys" ticked in the context menu or in
Options/Preferences/Viewer-Editor) -- did you?

In other words, were you seeing a round yellow icon when you used RTV
and not just ";)"?

That's a necessary condition for this abnormality to occur. Something
about having an image overlaying the handle seems to confuse TB!

This never happened in v. 2.12.00 and earlier, right on back to the
time that 9Val's Default Smileys were first added--was that in v. 2.0?
I'm not sure, because I came on board at v. 2.6. Up until then I was
happy as a clam, running v. 1.62.

M>> But I hate it when someone using RTV quotes me and a smiley I have
M>> included doesn't appear in the quoted text.

> I agree, but I just cannot duplicate it.

Thanks for trying.

This bug effectively negates comfortable use of Smileys with handles
that call images.

They have been so much fun to play with, for me, and at times,
actually, so nearly indispensably useful.

But the PTV crowd (of which I was once a member) do win on this issue.
RitLabs might as well remove this feature from TB!, since it is
dangerous to use it. Woe.

Indeed. So, I persevere, trying to identify what are the necessary and
sufficient conditions for it to manifest itself. So far, no joy.

And, as we discussed before, I'm being as careful as I can not to
depend on a smiley in my own posts to round out my intent in what I am

However, this is much less convenient than the old convention of a

Ah, Miguel, I've been too long in the Bat Cave. The lingo is
contagious. :)

I mean this:

1) Read a message with Smileys in it, using RTV and the Smiley
function enabled.

2) Reply to it using the following steps:

a) Highlight (select) the part of the message you wish to quote, using
the left button of the mouse to do the highlighting (selecting).

b) Hold down the "Shift" key with your preferred finger and
simultaneously click the Reply arrow on the toolbar.

3) The highlighted (selected) text will be quoted, but randomly, and
more often than not, for me, great woe will occur: the smiley text
will be omitted. This happens more often when there are two lines of
text, with the smiley at the end of the second line.

This bug simply imposes an extra chore on me, since I do enjoy reading
in RTV and seeing the smiley images. Lest I leave an important one out
in my quoting, I switch to PTV if I want to reply, and quote from a
PTV of the message to which I'm replying.

But, everyone is at risk from being misquoted with this bug in
existence. You never know who will decide to quote from an RTV reading
of your post and perhaps omit your smiley. :(

Sometimes causing misunderstandings. :(

And actually not here because I never use RTV. But I hate it when
someone using RTV quotes me and a smiley I have included doesn't
appear in the quoted text.

Reproduced again, here, using Select (highlight)-plus-Shift-plus-Reply
Arrow. Sad Smiley was not quoted. I was very careful to be sure that
is was highlighted at the end of the line, using RTV.

And especially if used with Select-plus-Shift-plus-Reply Arrow. It has
done so in the above quote, which left your smiley off.

However, when I simply clicked the Reply arrow (I discarded that in
favor of sending the one in which I reproduced the bug), the smiley
ASCII handle for the image was quoted.

It's a very elusive beast so far as tracking down its cause! Which
makes me sad. :(

Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It is a good chance to get rid

It doesn't fail with a single line, or at least not always. It is more
likely to fail with a 1 and a half line paragraph like this one :-)

Not confirmed.

I switched to the RTV and saw the smiley.

Hit reply and saved it as draft.

Opened the reply in the Outbox and saw the smiley.

Then I took the original message and just highlighted the line above
and hit F4. The result is above. All's fine over here.
