It's the same importance for computer-management as TB! for mails

I'm almost beginning to regret buying PGP9. No, that's not strictly true,
I don't regret buying it, I just wish there was some degree of consistent

didn't cause so many problems with it.

I'm toying with the ides of joining a PGP mailing list. Trouble is I don't

You need to install a plugin (this is one of TC's strengths.

Go to: http://www.ghisler.com/addons.htm look for Packer plugins on the
page and then find the MSI plugin extension.

Then (this is from the installation file included with the plugin):
- unzip the msi.wcx to your Total Commander installation directory
- choose the menu configuration - options
- choose the packer tab
- click the configure packer extension dlls button
- type msi as new extension
- click new type, and select msi.wcx
- click ok
- type msp as new extension
- select msi.wcx
- click ok

Clear?

Did you extract it from Home MSI or from Professional MSI?

Home. However, I did get the Exception on exit (Windows error report window
popping up), just didn't notice it because I did not quit it before I went
to bed.

Nothing different to .16 by the way, same error message on exit.

Cascading AVs Mail Dispatcher transfer button; also, Outbox AVs [was Re: 3.5.0.14]

2005-05-24 Thread Mary Bull
Hello Maxim!

On Tuesday, May 24, 2005, 12:26 PM, you wrote:

Please try the updated version from the download page
 http://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/download.php

Sending mail went fine.

On attempting to download 6 messages by clicking on the Transfer
button in the Mail Dispatcher, got an AV (just as has been happening
randomly in a succession of RCs and in 3.5).

What's different: I clicked OK but the AV was replaced by a different
one, which cascaded until TB! 3.5.0.14 closed itself, with no further
dialogue.

Mail Dispatcher AV:
Access violation at address 00A85F68 in module 'thebat.exe'.
Read of address 0009.

I clicked OK. Got cascading AVs:
00A85DFA, read of

The Bat! v. 3.5.0.14 then closed itself.
I relaunched. Mail fetched via Mail Dispatcher with no AVs.

Before trying Receive Mail, I saved this half-written message in the
Outbox.

I went to the Outbox and clicked on the file (the only saved message
at present). Got doubled AVs for that,
Address 00A85DFA, read of address .

Clicked OK. Got yet another and different AV; clicked OK, still
another. With the AV window up, could not close TB!

Invoked Task Manager. Ended TB! Relaunched.

This mail loaded in the Edit Mail Message window without problems.

I'm afraid this is going to turn out to be another unreproducible (at
will) set of AVS. :(

Just thought I'd report these two problems, the only ones encountered
so far with 3.5.0.14.

Seems to work fine, although thebat_home.msi contains a newer

thebat_professional.msi's thebat.exe (dated 2005-05-23 20:02:38).

Was this intentional? In any case, both thebat.exe files say they're
version 3.5.0.14, and both the old and new file run correctly as a
professional edition, AFAICS.

No, but probably you installed your old version of the bat in a
similar way: by downloading the .msi to your desktop, double-clicking
it to install, and subsequently doing what all normal users do,
throwing away the msi. Or maybe moving it to your Stuff folder
somewhere.

And this is precisely what MSI can't cope with: it needs the old msi
to be able to do ANYTHING with your installation, even upgrading or
uninstallation. (In fact, I've understood that MSI deals with
upgrading by doing an uninstallation of the old version first, which
often fails miserably, and then a normal install of the new
version. This usually forces you to reboot twice or even more times
for a simply upgrade...)

I just downloaded it and double clicked it and got the error
the first time I tried it as well as subsequent times.

You could run it a 1000 times, and you'd still get the same error.
First you need to get the old installation to uninstall in some way.
You can put the old .msi file back in exactly the same folder, with
exactly the same filename as you initially used, and then run the
uninstaller, or (recommended) use Microsoft's MSI cleaner tool to get
rid of the old cruft.

bug in the installer script. Try uninstalling completely and then
reinstalling. :)

No, but probably you installed your old version of the bat in a
similar way: by downloading the .msi to your desktop, double-clicking
it to install, and subsequently doing what all normal users do,
throwing away the msi. Or maybe moving it to your Stuff folder
 somewhere.

Nope, have not moved or renamed any file relating to msi files.

Can someone give a short summary on the *advantages* of releasing software

What I've read so far means that its uncomfortable to deal with, a waste of

IMHO an installer (and its corresponding uninstaller) should be made
according to the KISS principle. This reduces the changes of anything
going wrong during installation or removal of a software package. MSI
is a clear example of a way over-designed installation system. :)

Anyway, we're getting offtopic now. I guess RITLabs chose the MSI

Yay! But, you got it from ASK, if I read your earlier post correctly.
And *he* said that he had not used the msi to do the install--he just
extracted the file thebat.exe and removed his old thebat.exe from
his The Bat! directory folder and dropped this one in.

What I don't know is, how to extract only the thebat.exe from the
total msi package.

Anyway, this proves that the developers code-writing difficulties are
in the rest of the msi compressed dowload file, and not in
thebat.exe per se.

Exactly. Alex sent me just the exe file and a few dll's. I didn't use the
msi installer. That's just another point to back up Alex' argument about
msi files. I had terrible trouble with the msi file. It forced me to
install MS software to correct a problem that shouldn't have happened in
 the first place.

So without the msi file, 3.0.0.5.19.14 or whatever it's called, is running
beautifully. So well in fact, I've not jittery about it's IMAP ability and
gone running to Mulberry for cover.

So far, I'm impressed. Well done RIT :)

Apologies for answering ...you can do it with TotalCommander and the msi
plugin installed... You can easily extract the exe file from the cab file
inside the msi.exe..the only thing you have do afterwards is to rename the
 file from thebat.exe.BBD4A38C_B875_4E46_B27C_5CAECB0257C4 to thebat.exe ;-)

Is Total Commander very hard to learn? I've seen knowledgeable people
swearing by it, but I don't have it, as yet.

I do not have WinRAR, but I know, you have. :) As far as I know, you can
easily open the msi package with WinRAR.

Right-click context menu and choose Open with WinRAR. That should do it.

I use TotalCommander with a plugin which works fine, too.
