Hello Thomas,

In your Reply or New Message templates, add a macro:

 %Comment=%Folder

This will write the folder name into the headers and you can filter on
 that.

But you still need a filter for each folder, right?

My own position is, we should all sign all our messages and even
encrypt it. I am not the one to tell others what is important or not.

BTW, if everybody encrypted posts, nobody could be prejudiced to be
guilty of anything just because he encrypts (and I am not just

That signing is a good thing is out of the question ...

[SOT] The best filter for SPAM

2002-12-15 Thread Miguel A. Urech
Hello all,

Like many people, I receive hundreds of e-mail daily with a good
percentage of spam. Up to now I have been using a combination of TB
filters plus, at server level with Mercury/32, RBLs, my own Killfile
and local BL, Compliance Control (checking for messages without
subject or date headers, etc.) plus Content Control (content testing
rules giving a weight). But even with all of these I still got a
number of false positives and undetected spam.

A couple of weeks ago someone mentioned POPFile in this list and I
decided to give it try. I installed it, trained it for a couple of days
and it has been running for some 10 days with 99% accuracy, detecting
spam (in different languages, BTW) that had gone undetected by the sum
of the other schemes and with hardly any false positives. It's a
beauty.

Newbie Q: text attachment visibility

2002-12-15 Thread Uwe Zimmermann
Hello listmembers!

First I would like to introduce myself briefly. My Name is Uwe
Zimmermann, I come originally from Germany but chose to go to Sweden
to become a PhD student in Stockholm, five years ago. Privately I have
become involved in the software support of an image database program
which I discovered (after long time searching).

I have converted to Heat! only a few days ago and I am quite sure that
I finally have found my future email client after about a year's
trial-and-error. I was driven to look for a new email client by the
introduction of Opera's new M2 mail engine which I find everything but
useful.

Originally I was using (and still am for my main email account)
Netscape, but when I started as a freelancer in email support for a
small company, I needed a program which could handle
a) multiple accounts separately
b) would offer backup features

Opera has never (in spite of advertising) been able to import my main
email account from Netscape, so it stayed where it was, but everything
else I managed from Opera - until last week.
Therefore I searched the Web for alternatives, I had already tested some of them
like Eudora (at work), Pegasus, but this time I found PMMail and
TheBat!

After about one hour of testing everything was clear and here I am...
I like about everything about the program and whenever somebody asks,
I will recommend it.

Now I come to my questions, I hope somebody has made it through the
blurb above and is still reading this.
In the support emails I often get attached plain-text documents to the
email. These normally have the extension .log, but may also come as
.txt. I wonder if there is any possibility to make TheBat! display
these attachments - it's all plain ASCII text - much like it now
displays attached image files in a tabbed separate window. If not, is
there any possibility somewhere in TheBat! to set, which program is
used to handle which type of attachment? On my system TheBat! does not
open any external viewer when I try to double click on attached .log
files, instead I first get the warning that these files can contain
viruses (it's pure ASCII and a non-macro text editor is associated with the files in
Windows) and when I insist on opening the file I get the error message
that the application for these files was not found...

   Uwe.

Hello Charles,

I use the Selective Download filter feature in TB and it works well.

As no system is perfect, I can't (don't want) take the risk of
deleting false positives that may be legitimate e-mail. I will always
just send spam (possible spam) to an specific folder which, sooner or
later, I will review for possible false positives. Anyway, what
criteria would I use for deleting messages? Those messages flagged as
spam by my own server? No, no matter how much I tweak them there are
false positives every now and then and, anyhow, I've said that POFile
beats them all. At least that is my experience.

Not in TB. TB uses the file associations you've defined for Windows.
In order to associate a file type, you try open a file in the explorer
when there's no association, you get to choose a program and the
possibility to use that program always for this type (check-box).
After you've done that TB will use that program to open that file
type. It might be possible that you need to close and restart TB
before it figures that you've associated the file type.
On my system *.log is associated with notepad and that's what TB uses.

UZ On my system TheBat! does not open any external viewer when I try
UZ to double click on attached .log files, instead I first get the
UZ warning that these files can contain viruses

You can disable this warning in:
Options - Preferences - Warnings - Add *.LOG to 'Enable opening of these file
without any alert'

UZ (it's pure ASCII and a non-macro text editor is associated with the files in
UZ Windows) and when I insist on opening the file I get the error message
UZ that the application for these files was not found...

That's the part I mentioned about Windows file associations.

If the text file has a .txt extension then TB! will display it via
tabbed separate window unless the .txt file is very large. I don't
know the size limit. It just displayed a 100KB text file for me in
its own tab. But I had tested a 6.8MB text file the other day and it
didn't display it in its own tabbed window.

If the text file has other extensions then you'll have to open it
with the associated application by double clicking on the

TB! uses the systems associated application. Therefore, if the log
file is not being opened, it's because there's something wrong with
.log file associations on your system. Do you have .log files
associated with your text editor?

Also for text file extensions, you can disable the antivirus popup
warning by going into Options/Preferences/Warnings. Add .log
extension to the list of extensions that are opened without warning.

If you don't want to get the warning for *.log, go to Options -

In my system (Win2000) I have *.txt and *.log files associated with

ACM TB! uses the systems associated application. Therefore, if the log
ACM file is not being opened, it's because there's something wrong with
ACM .log file associations on your system. Do you have .log files
ACM associated with your text editor?

LOG-files have always been associated with my text editor WinEDT. This works nicely
in Windows Explorer, the LOG file shows the corresponding icon and if
WinEDT is running, the file is opened within the running instance of
the program, when WinEDT is not running, the program is launched and
the LOG file displayed.
However in TheBat! I get the Windows flag as icon for LOG files and
the above mentioned error message persists.

Thanks for showing me how to disable the warning, now it's only the
error message which is left.

Hmmm. Interesting.

I have TextPad associated with .log files and don't get this error.
TB! doesn't really have any control over which application opens
attachment filetypes that aren't supported by it's internal viewer.

It usually just uses the system associated application.

I have WinEdt installed here and am trying to get it to associate it

even though I manually created the association in the Windows

I then switched the association back to textpad ... textpad opens

How so? Do you mean TB! determining which file-types are opened by
which applications? If TB! did more than simply open attachments
then I'd agree. Applications like Opera can handle filetypes in
different ways, i.e., download them, handle them with a specific
plugin or just open them with the system associated application.
Because of this, it's best to have Opera handle filetypes.

With TB! it does seem unnecessary in the main.

If WinEdt's associations were working as they should, then you'd
have been a happy camper.

Is there by any chance a possibility to switch the language of the

Switching the spell checking with the

Miguel,

(got ya name right this time ;-)

MAU A couple of weeks ago someone mentioned POPFile in this list and I
MAU decided to give it try. I installed it, trained it for a couple of
MAU days and it has been running for some 10 days with 99% accuracy,
MAU detecting spam (in different languages, BTW) that had gone
MAU undetected by the sum of the other schemes and with hardly any
MAU false positives. It's a beauty.

Since your original post, I also have finally given PopFile a go - I
have been meaning to for quite sometime, and thought today was too hot
outside to do much else, so it seemed the perfect day to finally try it
out.

I must say, I too am impressed with the accuracy i seem to be achieving
even after only a few hours of training, and 100 odd emails. Of course,
as you would expect, not one email I have received since running PopFile
has been spam...

But I do wonder if I have chosen the most appropriate way to set up my
buckets. As the majority of my mail is sorted based on the sender, I
really only have two real buckets, 'legit_email' and 'spam'. It seemed
to me that only two buckets might not provide enough statistical data,
so I also decided to create a bucket for each mailing list. bringing my
total to 5 buckets. It seems rather stupid to make a bucket for each
sender, as the bat filters take care of that, and work/personal is
already taken care of just based on the sender as well.

So my real question, after all this, is what have you found to be the
most appropriate bucket setup? Should I artificially create more
buckets, or leave it at the minimum.. or am i missing the point
entirely? or.

Also, am I just lucky, or over the last, say, month or so, has spam
really slowed down. The last spam i received through my main account
must have been early last week, and I haven't received any spam in
either of my hotmail accounts for weeks either... Just lucky, or are
other people noticing a similar occurrence...

cheers!

Re: [SOT] The best filter for SPAM

2002-12-15 Thread Miguel A. Urech
Hello Daniel,

snipped a bit
So my real question, after all this, is what have you found to be the
most appropriate bucket setup? Should I artificially create more
buckets, or leave it at the minimum.. or am i missing the point
 entirely? or.

I don't really know what *is* better, but I'll tell you what I did.
For some three days I had 4 buckets and the overall accuracy didn't go
much higher than 80%. Then I thought that the more buckets the longer
the training period would probably need to be and, what the heck!, I'm
only really interested in classifying spam from no-spam. So, as
actually two of the buckets were sub-sets of a third one, I
deleted the to sub-set ones and reset statistics and, after one more
day, accuracy was over 90%.

Aside of that I see no sense in using a Bayesian text classifier (that
is what POFile actually is) to tell me if a message is coming from
John Doe or from TBUDL list, both are legitimate mail and that kind of
sorting is better and more easily done by TB's *Sorting* Office.

Also, am I just lucky, or over the last, say, month or so, has spam
really slowed down. The last spam i received through my main account
must have been early last week, and I haven't received any spam in
either of my hotmail accounts for weeks either... Just lucky, or are
other people noticing a similar occurrence...

I wouldn't know. I get spam everyday, specially in two of my accounts,
and even just one spam message seems too much for me :-(

Attachement showing in a TAB?

2002-12-15 Thread Gerard
Hi Bat Users,

In the thread Newbie Q: text attachment visibility there is a
discussion about TXT attachements showing. Well they only do on my copy of
TB! for TXT files AFTER I have send or recieved them, not while editing

Files with the ext LOG or LST don't show a tabbed view.

For all files I don't have the Notepad Icon but just the plain Windows
logo on a sheet of paper. I do show the icons for Excel, Word or HTML
attachements.

At the risk of upsetting the Moderator I have attached minimal files with
the discussed attachement so everyone can see if it works for them.

Do you have to set an option before this tabbed display starts
happening?
For your information TXT, LOG and LST files are associated to Notebook
on my PC

For mass mailing, you need to create your message as a quick
template and in the quick template configuration, enable 'Use for
new messages/mass mailing'.

You then go in the address book, select the addresse/s or address
book group/s, go to File/Use Mass Mailing with template. Select from
the drop down list which template to use.

An individual message for each selected address or member of
selected address book group/s will be created and sent.

I'm not sure, but I'd examine the headers for something unique. I'd
have to examine a bounced message but I don't have any at present.

The topic is usually distinct, like Message send failure You could
filter on that.

VG Also, I've tested TB! mailing a lot and have filled up where the

I assume that you're referring to the To: drop down history list?

If so, use the up and down arrows to navigate through the list and
the delete key to delete entries. There's no option to clear it as
a single command.

VG Can I cycle through the addresses too?

Yes, but only through the auto-complete option.

If you type a string in the To: field, you can cycle through the
matching addresses in the To: history list using CTRL+ and
CTRL-.

Hi Gerard,

G Files with the ext LOG or LST don't show a tabbed view.

That's because of the content type of these attachments. Hav a look at
the source of your message and you will see that TB! sends the .txt file
as 'Content-Type: text/plain; name=TXT_Test.txt' but the other two
files as 'Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name=LST_Test.lst'.

TB! doesn't use Windows' file associations to determine the type of a
file, it relies on the content-type of the attachment. That's why it
refuses to display it, although -- considering the true content of the
files -- it easily could.

MAU Yes, I started using POFile on my desktop but after evaluation I moved
MAU it to my server and is running next to Mercury and MailTraq (which I
MAU use as a mail to news gateway). All you have to do is configure POFile
MAU to use a different port for POP retrieval and, in TB, set your
MAU Account/Properties/Transport to use that port. I'm using 114, 110 is
MAU used by Mercury and 112 by MailTraq.

yup, that sounds like a winner!! I don't have Mailtraq, but, never mind,

problem: Quicksearch and spamcop filter

2002-12-15 Thread Haico
Hi,

Every time I try to forward spam to Spamcop with a manual filter
(**which is also listed on the FAQ page**) using the command
CTRL+ALT+S the quick search bar pops up.

I don't know why this is happening. I've looked at the hot keys
(shortcuts) and it isn't listed as belonging to the quick search bar.
It isn't listed at all belonging to anything so that shouldn't be a
problem.

I also tried using CTRL+ALT+N to forward spam, but that doesn't
matter.. The quick search bar keeps popping up.

The filter works fine but the side affect is pretty annoying.

It used to work fine in the past with version 1.61. Does anyone have a
explanation/solution for this annoyance?

That's likely a server configuration problem. The server is supposed
to mark successfully retrieved messages as 'read'. When TB!
reconnects, it will then know which messages are new and not yet
retrieved from which have already been retrieved.
