This is particularly annoying when I'm updating a website (15-20 changes) based on information in a long message. RITLabs made some changes to the way it interprets codes from the Logitech MX500 to correct another problem a few weeks ago. There may still be some lingering incompatibility. Antivirus problem noted and solved
This morning I received a message from a friend who began using The Bat after reading my recommendation of it. Here it is, edited slightly. I signed off TBUDL a while ago because The Bat had moved from being a major part of my thoughts to being a program which just works. However I hit a problem with the latest version of Vet anti-virus software which may also mean that it will turn up in new versions of eTrust and other Computer Associates anti-virus software. I now have an answer, thanks to the local Vet support staff here in Melbourne and you may like to pass it on to TBUDL. It seems that because of the way TheBat works, with attachments hidden in the file until saved, email scanning from Vet is best turned off. The Vet's normal file scanning will then find any problems if an attachment is saved. That worked for a while but then a still newer version of the Vet engine started to find every occurrence of the URL or JS spoofs in The Bat's temp files every time the temp folder was accessed -- which meant every time there was a mail download, and sometimes more often. Up would pop a warning dialog from Vet. Cancelling that dialog had to be done every few minutes. It took a while to persuade the Vet support crew that it really was as bad as I said but eventually after many emails, I got a phone call from them, and the answer was actually created while I hung on and listened in as he described step by step what he was doing -- files in the Bat's temp file name format in the temp folder being in an exclusion list in the XP Registry. Disappearing progress indicator
After I installed 2.04.4, I noticed that the progress indicator no longer works. Instead of a clock (or, if you prefer, a pie) there is only a black circle. Now instead of a plain black circle, I have a gray circle that displays the size of the document and shows progress as expected. Back in the old days when the big (40MB shared by 35 people) hard drives on the DEC PDP-11 RS/TS system reached 80%, we got warning messages from the IT folks. If usage got above 90%, we received personal visits who helped us audit our usage. Translation: Let's see what you can delete. On rare occasions when we hit 99%, they started deleting things on their own. This is know as the Next time they'll pay more attention principle. Disk space is so inexpensive now that I try to keep the disks half empty or more. So far, with two 120GB drives, I've succeeded in doing that. k Windows doesn't even like to defrag without 15-17% free space. I can k imagine the performance issues one would encounter with a 95% filled HD. Doesn't Windows start carping when free space drops below 85% or so? Within 3 months, this group would develop guidelines and standard for implementing a hot-fix, which would then be handed over to the staff programmers. Two months after that, the hot-fix would be released and it would break 4 other important functions. RIT Labs, on the other hand, receives a report and fixes the problem within 24 hours. What kind of way is this to run a company! My only choice is to close the add contact window, go to T the e-mail, copy the info I want and add it. Sometimes I add it to the T Other/Memo field if it's, for example, address, telephone and fax and T then cut and paste from there, otherwise I am opening and closing and T opening and closing and...well, you get the picture. :) A rather T tedious way of doing things, I think. I can save you one (small) step. Copy the text you want before you R-click the address. (I did try it with a message that had a scroll bar). In the editor, cruise up/down work as expected. So that's 3 out of 4. Ah, now I understand. I mis-read. This is a Windows feature and it's one of the dumbest things Microsoft ever did. In Windows Explorer, Folder Options, View, turn OFF Hide extensions for known file types. Microsoft apparently thinks that it's more friendly (more Mac like?) not to show extensions so that if you have AFile.exe, AFile.doc, AFile.xls, and Afile.txt, the Explorer view will be: AFile AFile AFile AFile The icons will differ, of course. This feature means that someone can receive a file that may appear to be safe, yet not be so safe. Example: ItWouldBeUnwiseToOpenThisFile.txt.scr will display in the Explorer as ItWouldBeUnwiseToOpenThisFile.txt, which looks safe. It's probably a bad idea to send someone a file with a double extension, anyway, because double extensions are considered by many antivirus programs to be hostile. What kind of file is filename.xls.asc? XLS suggests an Excel file. TB problem with PC Mag StartUp Cop
I recently upgraded to 2.02.3 CE and have observed an odd new feature. Whenever I start TB, it attempts to add an entry to the Registry (run once). I'm using StartUp Cop Pro from PC Magazine to monitor changes to the Registry's start-up keys and to the StartUp folder. When TB attempts to do this, StartUp Cop steps in to ask what I'd like to do. I've tried allowing it, disallowing it, enabling it, disabling it, and ignoring it. The results are always the same. I've not encountered this problem with any of the other 40 or so applications StartUp Cop is tracking. POSSIBLE solution: I disabled StartUp Cop and let TB start. Then I closed TB, started StartUp Cop again, and ran TB. This time it didn't trigger a warning from StartUp Cop. Anybody else using this little PC Mag utility? I do not speak for the list owners of this list, but I think I understand where they're coming from. As a list owner, there is one thing I never, ever, do -- and that is question the operating methods of a list owner. I imagine the administrators feel that public reminders are worthwhile. The problem with lists is that when people see something done wrong and no correction is issued on the list, the lesson learned is that the inappropriate behavior is correct and accepted. These reminder messages follow a format, so it's a trivial exercise in filter building to create a filter that eliminates them before they can bother you. For me, the answer was easy. TB is so powerful, so adaptable, so configurable, and so full of features that I can't live without that I'm willing to spend the time needed to learn how it works. I've been using TB since early version 1 and it takes no more than a glance at other products' feature sets to convince me that they might be prettier or better documented, but they will also be disappointing. Documentation has always been the weakest part of the application; I, too, hope that changes. If it doesn't, TBUDL does a fine job. I have been adamant about telling companies that I advise NOT to use such a system. It sends an extremely negative message to potential customers. I've also tried a lot of PC-based systems. Thanks to comments made here, I took a look at SpamPal (which is no pal of spam) and have installed it for a test run. No-show messages
Is anyone else seeing this surprising feature in v.2? I have about half a dozen accounts that TB checks. Messages are sorted into about 100 folders. All of that works properly, except that for ONE account, the list of accounts doesn't change to indicate new mail is present. This happens on both the home and office machines. It's a different account in each case, but both of the accounts are about 3/4ths of the way down the list. The account in question never lights up until I select the inbox. Most of the accounts have a specific sound attached, so I know where to look even if the account doesn't light up. IOW, it's not a killer, just a minor annoyance. Import the message back into TB. Now you can delete the original message. There might be a better way. A new user asked about the ability to edit received messages. Without testing, I replied, Try Ctrl-E. So today I tried it and thought I had provided bad advice. Ctrl-E opens the message for editing as I said. But when you try to close the message, TB asks if you want to save it and, if you do, demands an entry in the to field. Then it places the saved message in the outbox. It's a pending message, so it won't be sent unless you send it. (I specified [EMAIL PROTECTED] just to give it a valid-looking address.) The message is parked (although it's marked with a pending message icon instead of the usual parked P icon). I thought that was the end of the story, but it's not. You can then click the icon in the PARKED column to change the icon back to a blue dot and drag the message to a folder of your choosing. TB will try to check mail and ZA will begin using 99.9% of system resources. Occasionally the ZA process can be killed, but often the computer must be powered off. I think there is a low limit on how many anon ftp users can be connected simultaneously. * Ray4x6.tif: Single standard TIFF that somehow became a 2-page TIFF with non-standard colors. * scampi_test.jpg - successful scampi_test9.jpg - unsuccessful * progress_test.jpg - successful progress_test9.jpg - unsuccessful * Inbox.zip - See below for explanation of what is there. Now the observations: I created a test file with 4 attachments and sent this message to another of my accounts 9 times. The account I sent the messages to was set to store attachments in a separate directory. Mangled attachments
For quite some time, I've seen a problem that I thought was a bug in TB, but now I'm not so sure. Maybe it's something that I should be blaming on NAV. When a message with multiple attachments arrives, if the attachments are Word files or JPGs, I can count on some file corruption. The JPGs will be unreadable or partly readable, for example. This is virtually guaranteed to happen if there are 3 or more attachments. When the attachment is a zip file, it always seems to arrive intact. Is this a problem anyone else on the list has seen? I'd really like to retire Eudora, but I can't until I solve this little problem. Thanks! I used 'Help E Feedback Bug Report' to submit a bug (an even included my zip file of E the corrupted Test folder) but never received any acknowledgement or E any sort of response from RIT Labs. I've been hoping that it might be something other than TB, but since others see similar problems with and without firewalls, with and without AV software running, TB appears to be the most likely suspect. The fact that I can send a single message to two accounts on the same server, retrieve one with TB (corrupted) and one with Eudora (not corrupted) or with any version of Outlook (not corrupted) or on a Mac (not corrupted), that further suggests it's something TB is doing. I can also add this: I see the same problem on a W2K desktop, a WXP notebook, and a WXP desktop. Further, I can leave a message with attachments on the server and use dispatch mail to retrieve it several times, with varying results. One of my jobs involves receiving a message with 5 to 20 attachments each week (dog and cat pictures for an animal shelter website). In more than 75 weekly attempts, I cannot remember even ONE time when all of the attachments arrived successfully. Sometimes only 1 or 2 of the attachments fail; sometimes they all fail. Fortunately, I have very little hair left, so pulling out what's left is less painful than it might otherwise be. Agreed, but would it not have the same effect when the message is being reconstructed in Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express, Pegasus, Netscape Maill, or SOME other program? I have never seen one of these programs corrupt an attachment. If memory was the problem, wouldn't I see some evidence of it in other programs? Wouldn't I see BSODs on a regular basis? I agree absolutely that it's probably happening when the attachment is being reconstructed, but if it's bad memory, would the same image fail in the same way every single time? Wouldn't that be memory dependent? Wouldn't you expect the attachment to open sometimes and to fail sometimes? That's the nature of a memory problem -- transient. But once an image fails, it always fails. If an image is good, it's always good. I'm really not trying to knock you back or to be a smart ass, but I'm not about to take apart three computers (or even one) on what looks to me like a wild goose chase. A Also you mentioned ZA and mail checking - well I had to rebuild an exchange A server with a 12gb database because a virus checker was silently corrupting A attachments due to what is called (oh how I laugh) Known Issues Both ZA and NAV were out of the picture when I received a fax attachment earlier today -- it was corrupt. Fortunately my jFax account is set to leave mail on the server, so I retrieved the attachment with Eudora -- no problem. A So there are several angles to try. A Me - I'd isolate the easy ones first. Change the RAM - try it. Still the same? A then strike ram from it. Check to remove overheating from the equation. Many A people just slam in any old RAM into their PC's without a second thought for the A issues. Mismatching RAM is a big troublemaker I can't say that the RAM is perfect, but I pay extra for quality, matched RAM when I build a machine. I see no other indication that there is a RAM problem with any of the 3 computers. One of these is a computer that has been replaced during the time I have used TB. The problem occurred with the previous machine, too. So that would be FOUR machines (two that I built with known good components and two from decent manufacturers -- Sony for the notebook and Compaq for the desktop) with bad RAM. That's just too coincidental to fit. Possible, yes, but very unlikely. A If you have three machines then strip one down to windows and TB!. Remove all A extraneous software from it. You may, for example, have an esoteric bit of A software that conflicts. NAV and ZA were on all 3 machines (different versions). Except for that, running apps and processes differ quite a bit. Removing ZA and NAV had no effect, as others have already said. Trust me -- I *really* would love to find out that it's not TB because I really like this program. I've used it for 18+ months and, even with the problem I see, am not seriously considering any other program. There simply is no better or more configurable e-mail program than TB. That's common among all machines (although some check only 10 or so). A Only real DLL in the folder are the PGP ones (present) and the Spell Checker. So A DLL hell is possibly out as it looks like TB! is pretty self contained (and I A got out of programming 10 years ago!!) Spell checker only. A Write caching on or off? Varies from one machine to the next. A Ultra DMA on? (possibility of some conflict between TB! A and something?_) On this machine, yes. Office machine, probably not. Notebook-possibly. What I like about TB is its quickness and its ability to be molded into the tool I need. It's simple enough to operate that a new user won't have much trouble with it -- no more than with Outlook or Eudora or Communicator. Following discussions here, poking through the help file, and experimenting with regular expressions will reveal functions that aren't immediately apparent. TB does more with a clean, simple (this is ugly?) interface than any pretty program. Give me functionality and power. And maybe a little more time. I've been using TB for a little over 2 years and I have mastered probably 1/3 of its tricks. Check your local library. Books on Unix sometimes have a good introduction to the subject. I can't even begin to explain the regular expression above, but I can read some less complex ones. Perhaps you should export to CSV and import from there. If M you do so then I should point out that CSV import works best when you M have a row of headings at the top of the data. I've also heard that M Outlook's impression of CSV export doesn't match up to what most of us M techies would call a CSV data file though, so don't take it for M granted that it will work. I had a reason to do this a week or two and I eventually got it to work with only minimal editing. The problem is that I did it so many times that I forgot how I got from one place to the other. I remember experimenting with which fields were output and what they were called when they were output. I might have taken it to or thought Netscape and at one point it was an LDIF. When I finally got the file imported, all I had to do was tinker with the groups (they didn't import at all). Sorry Andrea and Marck -- I just don't remember which steps I took or in which order. I do remember that it wasn't neat or easy.
