Seems like you have 2 choices:
1) reflac everything to -5 (can be done with a script)
2) stream FLAC as WAV to remove the FLAC decoding burden from the
Touch back onto the Server.

How do I set the software so the server decodes the FLAC instaed of the
Touch? Thanks in advance. I did try to search but no results were
returned :-(

Found it! Disabling FLAC and forcing the Server to decode to WAV
results in FLAC level -8 playing just fine with minimal PC CPU overhead
(2-3% on my machine).

So two solutions to this:
1. Encode hi-res files to level -0
or
2. Use your server to convert FLAC to WAV and stream WAV to the Touch

Hello Roubil,

I bought myself a SB Touch (french too).
I plugged a hard drive 500 GB Samsung S2 which goes to sleep
automatically
You have to check what is the consumption of hard disk and it has a
standby mode
The SB allows Touch (apparently) 750 mA on the USB connector

get a simple thing like online ordering right and the various

I'm pretty stunned by the overall incompetance of the organisation and
can't work out how it still manages to make a profit. It is such a

[SlimDevices: Touch] Which tags?

2010-04-14 Thread Phileas

I've been attemting to use my Touch with a USB drive.

My music library is mostly classical and all my tracks are tagged to
suit the Custom Browse/Scan plugins. I don't have Artist tags, I use
Album artist and Workartist tags.

I tried putting the composer name in the empty Artist slots but these
don't appear under Artist on the Touch when reading from USB, only
Album artist tags appear under Artist.

On a slightly separate issue, is it difficult for the developers of SB
devices to add some basic menu functionality to suit classical
libraries?
I'd have thought there are by now quite a few users in my situation.

I know there are many ways of doing it and you can't please everyone,
but the addition of e.g. Composer and Work isn't too much to ask is it?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue ( Solution!)

2010-04-14 Thread ncpl

Just to add my 2p

I received my Touch today and have been testing a few 96/24 flac
tracks.

Touch is wired to gigabit router.

All flac are at -5 and some (not all) 96/24 are skipping and stuttering
to get going. Once they get going they seem to play OK. Changing a
track seems to make it stutter again.

Using my server to convert to wav seems a bit like a sticky plaster
solution. Would be helpful to know what the clever chaps make of this
issue.

For me, access to 96/24 was the No1 reason to get the Touch.

cheers

PS...the screen actions look fab. Well done

I don't think the question is what you think the curve should be, it's
which players you'd like this on. :-) Erland is trying to ensure he
reports the correct/actual gain level for each player. Erland, since
each SqueezePlay player can control other Squeezeboxes, I think you
should understand each player's curve. Ideally there would also be an
API for getting non-standard curves. E.G. one of my SB3 players has a
fixed output but thanks to my DenonSerial plugin, its 0 to 100 SB
volume maps to a -80 to 0 dB gain (my amp can go up to +18 dB but I
opted for a quieter top end and more granularity). In the SBS plugin
world, I use a modified MusicInfoScr that adds an API hook to let
DenonSerial report the gain level for players rather than always have
MIS assume the standard gain curve (I also tought MIS the Boom curve
and made alternate volume display work on Boom). It would be nice if an
SP player could accurately report amp gain either for itself or a
remotely controlled Squeezebox.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Sales or discounts?

2010-04-14 Thread mdconnelly

What I will say about Logitech (although the credit should go to the
Slimdevices team), is that our worst fears did not occur. Rather than
taking the Squeezebox line down a low-price/low-quality commodity path
as many feared, instead they significantly expanded the Squeezebox
lineup with high quality, complementary products such as the Boom and
Radio and then came out with the Touch which is a substantial
improvement over the Duet and SB3 in all aspects.

Were mistakes made along the way? Sure. But I for one am a very happy
Squeezebox customer and the Touch was definitely worth the wait.

Can't wait to see what's next!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Amazon shipping yet?

2010-04-14 Thread maggior

I don't know what's up with Amazon. One minute it says unavailable,
the next it says available 4/19 with fulfillment from Crutchfield.
What gives?

I ordered directly from Crutchfield and my order status is that it will
be shipped when available on 4/19. This gives the availability of 4/19
on Amazon some credence. I just don't understand why it keeps
disappearing.

Has the disease that's impacted Logitech infected Amazon? N.
;-).

A lot of what came out after the acquisition were projects that were
already in-flight. What's come out since have been variations on those
themes. The credit Logtech gets, in my mind anyway, is not getting in
the way of those in-flight projects. What happens next I think will be
very telling since anything new coming out now is probably something
dreamed up by Logitech without the benefit of Dean or Sean. Hopfully
the distribution issues we've seen as of late aren't an indicator of
things to come! :-).

I look forward to what is next too! I can't wait for my Touch to be
delivered - it seems like it will have been worth the wait. I'm sure a
boom with a touch screen, or at least a color display, will show up at
some point.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Sales or discounts?

2010-04-14 Thread erland

I think we have to remember a few things:

- The old Slim Devices would probably not be able to produce both the
Radio and Touch, my guess is that the delays would have caused them to
go bankrupt. Logitech's economical strength has probably saved the
Squeezebox product family.

- The people reading this thread is not the people that should read
this critique. This forum is read by Logitech developers and test
personal who have done everything very well. The management, sales and
support people who you guys are criticizing are probably not even
reading this forum. So all you do is creating extra frustration among
community members and the few Logitech's resources that all have done
their job very well.

I feel that its right to critique Logitech when they aren't doing their
job but we might need to think about who is reading the critique. If you
like the critique to have some effect, it's probably better to call your
Logitech sales or support representative and tell them what you think.

I do agree that it's painfully obvious that the Logitech organization
isn't used to launching popular products which people is willing to
pre-order before they have reached the market. It's also painfully
obvious that they aren't used to handle release delays, which are quite
common in software focused projects but a bit less common in hardware
focused projects as most other Logitech products. Logitech is probably
more used to releasing products which you decide to buy when you see
them in the store.

Still, we have to give Logitech some credit, they have actually
succeeded in producing the top audio streaming devices on the market.
Both the Touch and Radio have so much potential and we have only seen
the top of the ice berg so far. Just wait until the third party
community realizes that they are small silent completely open Linux
machines with great audio circuits which you basically can hack to do
whatever you like.

For everyone that's still waiting for your Touch, I feel your pain, but
as already mentioned it's both worth the wait and every dollar you have
to spend to get it. Remember that you are waiting for the best audio
streaming device on the market.

supposed to claim that, You can get the same thing on site B, but it
doesn't sound good. Buy it from us because it sounds better, without
something to back the claim up, which I don't see. Just sounds like
 marketing talk to me.

Phil makes a good point, if it is illegal, why isn't Sony, the feds and
everybody else coming down on the manufacturers of these illegal
 devices?

iTrax is also a recording company http://www.aixrecords.com/
So they do thier own records, most of iTrax releases are AIX records.
And thir mo IS recording new original material in 24/96 or 24/192 .

They embraced DVD-A when thats was the latest thing and have afaik
probably done most real HD Records of any label. They have excellent
5.1 24/96 DVD-A discs.
Note that you can actually get 5.1 24/96 files from iTrax , but the
total lack of such network players makes a very small market.

Most of the big labels have mostly re released some old stuff of
undetermined pedigree.
But you can sell that to, there is also an audiophile myth that there
is something to get from any old analog tape that's been destroyed by
CD.
Most recordings ever made have such SQ that 16/44.1 is sufficient.
You don't need a 5 gallon barrel to hold 1 gallon of content so use
24/192 for such things is a waste.

However there are some nicely done remixes/remasters that takes the old
24 track and does a new final mix and master and also a 5.1 version.
Talking Heads Brick Box is a good example, this is some kind of
renovation of the music if carefully done this can be great.
If done by morons the result is the usual over-compressed aggressive
sound that is the latest trend.

Agreed, and with much of the Logitech product line it's not a big deal
if the -exact- item you want is out of stock. Buy a different
keyboard, mouse, or speakers...

The SB line has no real replacement: it's not something you could
easily get for roughly the same price from some other vendor, and a
given SB model may suit your usage far far better than any other Sb
model. (A Radio or Boom is no replacement for a receiver.. and for
many a Duet is a better match for their needs than a touch.)

That complicates their inventory a bunch since running out of stock of
a given SKU does contribute to lost sales, which the keyboard and mice
people don't have to worry about nearly as much.

And, yeah, few buy a keyboard online. If your keyboard died, who can
wait for a new one in the mail?

the same situation? It's easy to be magnanimous about a deal when
you're the recipient of a companys largess, but theres always some who
will (in this case pretty justifiably) feel conned.

I've completed my customer satisfaction survey, and don't expect to
hear anything back from Logitech, but you've got to admit, placing new
customers at the head of the line for shipping AND giving them a
substantial discount, while older orders are still outstanding is
pretty poor customer service.

This isn't a criticism of Slimdevices Devs, the item or the software,
just the Customer service / sales / marketing departments.

Currently it's just an internal Perl API, but I'd be happy to add a
CLI/JSON API. Perhaps you could subscribe to something like 'ampgain'
notifications, and receive player-specific notifications when the gain
changes, with tagged data like dbgain:-20.5 and mute:0 for -20.5 dB
gain, not muted?

This might also be a candidate for the 'getexternalvolumeinfo'
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15657) notifications that
are provided by DenonSerial, Denon AVP Control, and IR Blaster, but
adding this would mean sending out many more notifications, so I think
it'd be good to discuss with Aesculus and pippin before going that
route. I don't want iPeng to suffer through floods of notifications it
doesn't (yet?) care about.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch in sleep mode and USB HDD

2010-04-14 Thread JohnSwenson

What are you expecting the power button to do? It doesn't actually shut
off the power, it stops the player if its playing any music and it
invokes the stopped screensaver, thats pretty much it. It doesn't
actually turn off the electricity to anything. It needs most of the
system up and running in order to determine that you actually touched
the screen to turn it back on. If it actually turned the power off to
the electronics inside it would have no way to turn itself back on
again.

If what you are after is to have the Touch tell the USB drive to spin
down when you touch the power button, thats probably theoretically
possible but has not been implemented yet.

This is NOT a problem that is endemic to the Touch - it relates to your

 I've re-encoded several 24/192 (!) albums as -8 and they ALL play

 router, wired to Touch.
So the problem is NOT within the Touch.
I am NOT running any plugins by the way.

I think *wired* is the solution.

For some reason you can not do network test with a greater rate than
2000kps with Touch or Radio (1000 on controller).
The Touch can do 2000 all day no problem

So my Theory is that the wifi for some reason is not really that fast
on squeezeplay devices .
Or wifi + flac decoding use a lot of cpu.

it plays 24/96 but stutters when i skip a tune then recovers, I can
listen to several songs wo problems, but starting or skipping stutters
a bit.
But it's functional for listening to an album if you don't

And the song I tested just now has a bitrate at 2785kbps it's 24/96
flac

However i'm not entirely surprised it just happens to be a spool of
cat5 wire at my home right now, and assorted tools.

Just ssh to it and run top made it go completely of tangent and
rebuffer to no end ? cpu use was 93%

This is NOT a problem that is endemic to the Touch - it relates to your
 server and/or network.
 I've re-encoded several 24/192 (!) albums as -8 and they ALL play
flawlessly on my setup which is a 2.6gHz Athlon (single core) wired to
 router, wired to Touch.
So the problem is NOT within the Touch.
I am NOT running any plugins by the way.

Hmm, a 24/192 needs to be downsampled in the server, what format is
then sent to the Touch? Does it send PCM to the touch or does it send
FLAC, and if FLAC what encoding does it use? If its using PCM or low
level compression FLAC to send the downsampled stream to the Touch I
don't think the compression used on the 24/192 file makes any
difference.

I've run a 24/96 FLAC -5 on my system many times and have never had any
problem going from the server, but it DOES do the stuttering when coming
from TinySBS.

I've never had the stuttering when coming from an external server no
matter what the file or stream format is.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/192

2010-04-14 Thread mortslim

This issue wasn’t even known until a few days ago when it was revealed
that “modified” machines and “not published” specs machines were being
used to extract DSD data from an SACD.

Apparently there are one or two boutique companies who are making these
machines (with some employee links between the companies) and one studio
doing the work. It’s low profile.

And the previous various contradictory and inconsistent explanations as
to the method and workflow involved in extracting the data can be
interpreted as:

1. A deliberate attempt at obfuscation because of a conscious knowledge
of these issues.
2. Unawareness or misunderstanding by those involved as to these
issues.
3. A desire to protect a “trade secret” as to the method of
extraction.

Of course whatever the reason, all these possibilities just further
reinforce the need for full disclosure to the consumer as to the source
of a music download and the method for its preparation.

All we can do is ask questions.

Something like:

host fab4wire {

Thinking about this a bit more, this seems like an awfully chatty/heavy
approach. For MIS, the internal Perl API basically allows DenonSerial to
say, oh, you want a dB gain value for volume 50 for the family room
player? I control that, and its range is -80 to 0, so let's call that
-40 dB. Simple math. Seems heavy to rely on Comet/HTTP/JSON to tell an
applet that 50/100 = -40 dB. It'd be easier to either have CLI for
delivering a 100-member array of ampgain values for those few players
that have external amp volume control (and doing so only once per
player). I don't know what a 101-item Lua array of signed decimal/float
values costs in terms of RAM, but I would think using a lookup table on
your side would be more efficient responsive than using CLI.

I'm not sure how best to handle mute state. Currently I use an IR
remote and mute my amp rather than send a Squeezebox mute command, so I
don't know if mute has any affect on a fixed volume player (hopefully it
at least doesn't use that cute fade up/down code that pause tends to do
on normal variable output players), or how an external app would know
that the external amp was muted, turned off, etc.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Sales or discounts?

2010-04-14 Thread carib

Just to spend my 2 cents wisely here; I would have, and could have,
bought the Touch at the original suggested price but really couldn't
avoid taking advantage of the $20 discount offer from a reputable and
reliable dealer ... so I just went ahead a ordered from Crutchfield.
In all honesty, I thought the $225 offer was a little too good to be
true ... and I hope I'm wrong for all those that ordered there.

Anyway ... I just got a UPS tracking number for my order.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Japanese characters not displaying correctly

2010-04-14 Thread e_esprit

Hi,

I am the new (very) happy owner of a Squeezebox Touch, and everything
is running perfectly (did I already say I was very happy ??? :D )
except one thing : I have two albums from japanese bands, which names
are tagged in Kanji, and which are not correctly displayed on the Touch
(got squares, like when you have a missing encoding font on your
system).

The display is correct through the browser when connecting to the slim
server interface, but not on the Touch.

Am I missing something ? some settings on the Touch or server ? or does
the Touch is not able to display such characters ?

Thanks for your help.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Local music service has been stopped due to a problem

2010-04-14 Thread andyg

Local music service has been stopped due to a problem usually means
that the system ran out of memory. The most likely cause for out of
memory errors is during the artwork scan, when a very large image is
encountered. Future versions will refuse to resize very large images
but for now this is a problem. So you should look for large high-res
images as either cover.jpg files or embedded tags. By large I'm
talking over 1MB in size.

Kevin,

Sounds like we both placed our orders around the same time. I am
afraid of calling and them cancelling the order:) Maybe they are just
ignoring the overnight shipping part and will honor the discount and
ship when they are available. As a reference, my other Touch was
ordered on 4/9 and shipped yesterday. I am guessing they take a few
days to process before shipping(of course ignoring the overnight
request).

Interesting, I would actually expect it to shut down the server when the

[SlimDevices: Touch] standalone Touch access to iTunes playlists ??

2010-04-14 Thread michaelday

With the Touch running in standalone mode ( w the music library on an
attached USB drive, accessed via TinySC ) is it capable of also finding
and using iTunes playlists, if the iTunes music library XML files are
also put / copied onto the USB drive?
How is the Touch in standalone mode, set to point to the iTunes music
library files, etc. ? Is the scanning of the iTunes music files ( for
the iTunes playlists, album artwork, and unchecked songs ) a normal
part of the music library scanning that's performed by the Touch that
is running in standalone mode?
This question had previously been posted on the forum, with no answer
given.

I'm a longtime SB3 customer, and long loved the ability to easily build
my playlists using iTunes, which can then later be used on the
Squeezebox.
I'm really looking forward to getting the Touch, for all its many great
new features, especially for its ability to run in standalone mode – and
thus removing the need to have a PC always running to listen to tunes
from the Squeezebox and hopefully still be able to see and
use the iTunes playlists !

Kind Regards,
Michael Day

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] touch 7.5

2010-04-14 Thread aubuti

You could try the following:

1. Make a backup copy of your prefs directory. That will include
server.prefs, plus any prefs settings for plugins.

1a (optional). Make a list of all of your settings. A semi-convenient
way to do this is by taking screenshots of the SBS settings pages with
your existing settings.

2. Install the new Squeezebox Server. If you are coming from 7.3.3 it
probably will overwrite your preferences. (It shouldn't do that if you
are coming from 7.4.2, but then a lot of people had their 7.3.3
overwritten by 7.4.2, so you're neither ahead of the game or behind.)

3. Check to see if your preferences were overwritten. If not, then
you're done.

4. If your settings were overwritten, stop SBS. This is important. Then
overwrite the new prefs files with your the backup you made in Step 1.

5. Restart SBS and see if your settings are familiar. If so, you're
done.

6. If your old settings aren't restored, then you'll have to reset them
manually. This could be easier if you did the optional step 1a above.

Note that if steps 1-5 seem to be too much trouble, you can always do
only steps 2, 3, and 6 instead ;o)

One other important change to note is that in 7.3.3 the program was
called squeezecenter and ran under the username 'squeezecenter'. In
7.4.x and 7.5.x it is called squeezeboxserver and runs under the
username 'squeezeboxserver'. I expect that sstos will take care of
these things for you, but thought I'd give a heads up just in case.

Just placed an order today at 11:53a PST and got both discounts.
I had gone as far as placing one in my cart yesterday at work then
decided to wait to see if my brother wanted one. By the time I got home
the offer expired. When I came back to work today, the discount price
must have been cached in my browser somehow so I placed the order and
it went through, I called them and confirmed it went through.

If it worked for me it might work for others!

They wouldn't offer me a credit for the full price pre-orderd one I
bought though and said the offer expired on 4/13. I still feel it's a
rotten thing to do those who pre-ordered.

I need one more but I think I'll wait this time.

I have an USB stick with the whole music of the Beatles. When I make

Is there something that I missed, or any explanation to this problem ?

Oh wait, it's not released in canada... probably won't ever be.

 documentation elsewhere?

I'm afraid not, but here is a short description.

The main parameters in the upper part:
- name: The unique name of the style
- models: The Squeezebox model the style is for, I'd recommend only
checking one
- background(optional): The background image to use, typically an url
to a png image
- backgrounddynamic: Indicates if background should be re-read at
regular intervals
- backgroundtype(optional): Background color to use, typically only
used unless no background has been specified
- clockposx(optional): Not used anymore, leave empty
- clockposy(optional): Not used anymore, leave empty

In the lower part you define all text or image items that should be
displayed, you can look at one of the predefined styles if you like a
sample.

When adding a new item on the lower part, you might need to:
1. Select New item...
2. Click Apply
3. Specify the itemtype parameter
4. Click Apply

After 4, the rest of the item parameters will be adjusted to those
applicable to the itemtype you have selected.

Many items have parameters like:
- posx: X coordinate of item
- poxy: Y coordinate of item
- text: Text to display in text item, might also be a time format (for
timetext items) or a title format (for track*text items)
- url: The url to the png image to use in image items
- color(optional): The text color to use for text items
- order(optional): Drawing order, higher number will be drawn on top of
lower number, often you can leve this blank

Hopefully this will get you started. You can look at the predefined
styles if you want some samples and there are also a number of more
advanced styles which can be imported on this wiki page:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Custom_Clock_styles

You import by selecting Style:Import... and pasting the text from the
text files linked from the above wiki page.

If you have made something and don't get it to work, you can just click
the Export button to export the style to a text file and then post it
in the forum so someone can help you.

It's a good idea to post this in the 3rd party plugin section of the
