[TV orNotTV] Re: Late-night upheaval: A six-night-a-week issue
Also consider that Seth Meyers is largely considered the heir apparent to the 12:35 Late Night slot, although it remains to be seen how a probable move to LA would factor into Meyers taking the job. Also, what's the status of Jason Sudeikis? Conventional wisdom was that he'd be done with SNL after the general election, but he's still hanging around (although he's not being used the way he once was - I spotted him in all of one sketch during the recent Timberlake episode). I would think his job as an executive at Bravo would make Andy Cohen a non-starter (plus, yes, he's too HELLO! for the fratboy 12:35 audience). Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: P/T confusion at CBS
CBS was frustrating as hell last night. When I turned over at 7pm, expecting to see SOME delay due to golf and looking to see how late things would get pushed (since I didn't get an EyeAlert), I couldn't believe they stayed with the Masters - or, really, their 'cabin in the woods' postgame show - for almost a full hour into Primetime. CBS really needs a cable outlet so they can shunt nonsense like that over and run primetime as scheduled. Hard to call it a fiasco when it pulled good numbers. And honestly, I didn't think MacFarlane was all that bad. The landscape is very different this time around. There's every possibility that Netflix, Hulu or Amazon would be interested in picking up Futurama. And of course, there's still Adult Swim - they could stand to break up their MacFarlane-heavy early block, and Futurama might make a welcome return. Or maybe I'm just a crusty old fool waiting for the Sunset Squad robots to arrive. Either way, Futurama managed 7 seasons, it's in weekend syndication and will probably find a rerun home somewhere on cable - that's no small accomplishment for a show so steeped in genre humor. [TV orNotTV] New open for Late Show
Not sure if this was brand new tonight or if was in use before Dave's recent vacation, but Late Show has finally ditched the crappy CGI open for actual footage of New York City and (what I thought was) a classy graphics package. They also seem to have changed the shot list following the VTR: 1) reverse angle shot of audience (not sure if handheld or jib - possibly shot from Dave's desk riser) 2) catwalk shot angled down to shoot through the scrim during Dave's dash to stage left 3) over-the-shoulder on Paul as the scrim goes up and Dave makes his entrance 4) back to the reverse angle shot, now at (roughly) floor height, as Dave finds his mark 5) finally to the hard camera for the start of the monologue This may not seem important, since neither is a MATERIAL change (there was still a Regis joke within the first 90sec of the monologue, for example), but both changes contribute to a fresh look for the show...or at least help it feel less dated. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Yes, the dash to stage left happens every night. Re: [TV orNotTV] New open for Late Show
The interesting thing is, Dave himself didn't do anything different. The dash to up-left, the entrance, hitting his mark were exactly as he's done for god-knows-how-long. But it's pretty amazing how a little thing like changing up the camera angles can make a difference. Re: [TV orNotTV] The worst way to start your news anchor career
Melissa - the piece of the story that hadn't come out - that neither anchor had an IFB, and that Clemente wasn't aware they were on-air as he reviewed his copy - changes my opinion significantly. Clemente should have been reprimanded, but not fired - as should the director or floor manager. The Kid (as Letterman kept calling him) says he was nervous and frustrated, and I believe that. I've done my share of cursing in the course of psyching myself up prior to having to speak, so I can relate. Yes, he should have been more careful, given that he was standing on a TV set and wearing a microphone. But he's also fresh out of college, and is bound to make a mistake or two. He just happened to make his in a HUGE way. On Wednesday, April 24, 2013 10:37:36 PM UTC-4, MelissaP wrote: Hour 3 isn’t the Kathy Lee Hour. Re: [TV orNotTV] New open for Late Show
The one thing the new open shines a light on - in a big way - is how dated some of the other commonly-used VTR elements are. On Monday or Tuesday, the Top 10 lead-in graphic was the Space Shuttle flying through various locations in Manhattan; the Times Square shot clearly includes the huge neon Fleet Bank sign that lived on the southwest corner of 46th and Broadway, at the Marriott Marquis. The sign is still there, but it's been long-since rebranded as BoA, which bought Fleet over a decade ago. (See it on Google Maps Streetview: http://goo.gl/maps/dCPO4) Sure, the average viewer would probably never catch it, but... [TV orNotTV] Re: The Season's Damage So Far (Annotated)
ABC would have been better off running Splash The Taste as summer series. Splash, in particular, seems like a good companion show for Wipeout, and The Taste was a serviceable food variant of The Voice, albeit with issues; it was watchable primarily because of Tony Bastard Chef Bourdain. NBC might give Community another frame if they don't see many comedies worth ordering out of pilot season, but now that Chevy's gone, they should really think about bringing Dan Harmon back to help the show rediscover its voice. (And speaking of Chevy being gone...would it be so awful if, should the show get renewed, Pierce is suddenly being played by Fred Willard instead?) As for the rest, my guess is that Red Widow, Splash, The Taste and Wife Swap are dead, Happy Endings is going to USA and Nashville, The Neighbors, How to Live With Your Parents and Body of Proof are on the bubble. Too soon on Family Tools. CBS: The Job's episodes have yet to burn off, the other cancellations have completed. Of the pendings, my guess is that CSI: NY, Golden Boy and Rules of Engagement are done and Vegas is on the bubble. Friend Me has yet to be scheduled, due to its showrunner committing suicide. I am not kidding. CW: All cancelled shows have played out. Of the pendings, I'm calling Carrie Diaries done and Nikita coming back. FOX: Of the cancelled shows, Ben and Kate is burning off in late-night Saturday and there are probably some unaired Cops eps that may air in syndication or on cable first. Fringe has ended. Of the pendings, Cleveland will probably be back, since they don't have anything in the cartoon pipeline for prime time, Touch is done and Goodwin Games premieres May 20 (but already had an episode order cut, which is not a good sign, not to mention that Fox isn't promoting it while they've been promoting Does Someone Have to Go? up the wazoo). NBC: Animal Practice, Do No Harm and Ready for Love all have unaired eps and may show up online or on a Network of NBCU. Next Caller, the Dane Cook sitcom, may be burned off online if they ever let it out. The Office and 30 Rock left of their own accords. In the pendings, Up All Night, Smash, Deception (originally titled Infamous), Fear Factor, Take It All (the renamed title of Howie Mandel's White Elephant--and what a prescient title that one was) and Stars Earn Stripes are all dead or probably dead and I'm guessing all other sitcoms and Hannibal are on the bubble (including Parks and Rec, which may call a final season--Community needs two more for SIX SEASONS AND A MOVIE!). [TV orNotTV] Re: Wrap: 'Idol' Bloodbath?
Connick clearly prefers a more hands-on approach (based on his AI appearances last week) - not to mention that he cares about HOW songs are performed, not just how many notes a performer can cram into a run, so if he WERE to attach himself to any of these shows, I'd think he'd go to *Voice * before *Idol* (barring a massive format change for AI). That said, I doubt he'd be able to work either into his schedule, especially with an album to support. AI has some serious issues to address, but the biggest issue in my eyes is that no one has successfully replaced Simon Cowell as the 'Harsh Voice of Reason'. One of the guilty pleasures of the early seasons of Idol was knowing that Simon would tell a performer exactly what he (and, in many cases, the home viewer) was thinking - none of the current judges are willing to go out on that limb. Contrast that the *The Voice*, where the coaches aren't afraid to let their performers know if they're disappointed in how a song turned out. Re: [TV orNotTV] Nyc
Melissa - I understand what you mean - Pippin, if played exactly as written, can be deadly, which is why most of the better productions take liberties with the concept of the Players and the framework of the show. I went to a theater camp for 8 summers - Pippin was done at least every other summer thanks to the need for a little kid (Theo) and the flexibility to pack in a huge ensemble. So after 8 years, I'd grown weary of mediocre productions; actually, that's an understatement - I straight up hated it. Then I got assigned to a grad thesis production of Pippin for stage management class in college. The director decided to completely change the Players' relationship to the Pippin/Catherine/Theo trio and to the audience. He also took some liberties with casting (Charlemagne and Berthe were played by the same [male] actor) and retooled the finale so that it didn't land with a thud (the original ending literally isn't one), and I fell in love with the show and gained a new appreciation for the score (especially some of the very clever wordplay in the lyrics). So when I saw Pippin on Broadway last weekend, I came in with high expectations. And I was NOT disappointed. I could go on and on - this was a production without a flaw - and trust me, I've been known to spot the tiniest flaws in revivals I hold dear. To kinda get this back on topic, here's a clip of the cast of Pippin' performing on Dave's show last month. It's hard to get a true feel for the production based on this one clip, but it's a start. iframe width=560 height=315 src=http://www.youtube.com/embed/kI7SZnwRCJI; frameborder=0 allowfullscreen/iframe On Sunday, June 2, 2013 11:41:02 PM UTC-4, MelissaP wrote: No no no no! Re: [TV orNotTV] Gallup Sucks - and Now Admits It
I'll second the lack of a 'NOTV' label - Frank Newport appears often enough in the media that it's certainly a media story, if not strictly a TV story. On Friday, June 7, 2013 8:13:11 PM UTC-4, PGage wrote: http://www.nationaljournal.com/blogs/hotlineoncall/2013/06/gallup-post-mortem-leads-to-polling-changes-04 Nobody not named Romney lost bigger last November than the Gallup Poll. They got their ass kicked by the results of the election, which they missed on badly - bigger than any other reputable poll. They have now published the result of a self-study that identifies 4 problems that contributed to their bad performance: 1) how they weighted likely voters, 2) underrepresentation of the East and West coasts in geographical controls, 3) underrepresentation of nonwhite voters, and 4) issues in how it contacted landlines that resulted in an “older and more Republican” survey sample. The problem of course is that most of these problems were pointed out to them last fall, and they were arrogant in dismissing them. The two biggest problems, which are related, was in their estimate of likely voters and weighting of non-white voters. It may or may not have been coincidence, but this is basically the same problem that most Republican professional political operatives had: Their conventional wisdom was that the 2008 voter turnout was a fluke, a result of one-time voter fatigue with 2 wars and a cratering economy. They could not believe that Black, Hispanic and other first-time voters would turnout in anything like 2008 numbers in 2012. Others (including, but not limited to, Nate-the-Great Silver) cited longer term voting and demographic trends in assuming that ethnic and new-voters would turn out, and they were right. Some of this is just reasonable disagreement over polling methodology, but a significant portion of it is clearly based on assumptions about who real Americans are. Do this date, many Republicans believe that Obama is an illegitimate president (quite aside from any judgement about how effective he has been) because he did not get the support of a majority of *real* (read for the most part white, over 40, non-coastal) Americans. Gallup clearly played into these assumptions with their polling model, perhaps because at some level the organization shared them. Some might think this story deserves a No TV label, but I don't think so. As many of the stories about this today have pointed out (and as Silver has been explaining for some time now) the main reason for these kinds of polling inaccuracies is that the incentives in political polling are not really to be accurate, but to get mentioned in, and legitimate, television news pieces. The 2012 presidential election was not a landslide, but it was never really very close, and there was remarkably little movement in the actual numbers from mid-summer through election day. But that does not make for very interesting news stories, so television is incentivized to give more weight and focus to any poll that shows movement or differs from the pack, even though by definition those are just the polls that are most likely to be wrong. The cable networks, which all saw nice rating increases during the election season, are unlikely to care much about how wrong they were, since by now almost nobody who watches them really expects them to be accurate. Thus they have little reason to change. Gallup on the other hand has a business model that goes far beyond simply predicting the presidential horse race every 4 years. Most of what Gallup does to make money is predict things that do not have such a clear criterion of accuracy. When they fall on their ass so glaringly in the presidential prediction game, in undermines customer confidence in the accuracy of the other products that are their bread and butter. There is a chance that Gallup will make changes to be more accurate next time - and if they do, it is likely that we will not see as many news stories about the Gallup poll (or aggregations that are disproportionately influenced by them), and instead will see news stories driven by more interesting and polarizing and (probably) inaccurate polls. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Stewart's show has been been understood as primarily satirizing the media at least since the Bush Administration, so this is really nothing new. My own politics make me sympathetic to the critique that Stewart too often indulges in false equivalency, but again, he has been doing that for a long time. And the last few months have been a satirical puzzle, as the parade of fake and overheated scandals touted by the conservative talking points of the week have not been serious enough to justify becoming the lens through which the executive branch is portrayed, but there has been enough reality to at least some level of concern and inquiry that it would not really due to do nothing but lambast Fox News for bringing it up. In the Williams interview Stewart did hint that if he was going to be around over the next few weeks he might focus in on Holder's criminalization of journalism, which I think is the right instinct. The 33% that is justified is I think a product of two things: 1) Stewart has for a while now seemed to be less energized about his job, enough that I have been wondering since before the election if he really still had the fire in the belly to keep doing it much longer; and 2) as he mentioned last night, Stewart has been spending a lot of time in recent months working on his film project, with a lot of staff doing things that he usually does. From the two or three accounts I have read of how TDS typically works, Stewart is something of a taskmaster, and while he may not be a micro-manager exactly, he does seem to engage in rigorous quality control over every aspect of the show. It seems likely that he has not been doing that as much the last 8 weeks or so. Stewart said several time this week that he would miss the show (the staff, and the audience) more than the show would miss him. I am not sure if that is true. Re: [TV orNotTV] The Post-Dave Late Show (from The NBC Stars' Revenge)
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but doesn't SCG get first dibs/right of first refusal at 11:35 per his most recent contract? (I know Craig has said he doesn't WANT 11:35, but technically he's got the right to it.) On Monday, June 10, 2013 11:33:32 PM UTC-4, PGage wrote: On Mon, Jun 10, 2013 at 1:12 PM, Joe Hass hassg...@gmail.comjavascript: wrote: I over-generalized with the word owns. Your interpretation is correct. My core question is which of these three statements is the most accurate: A. There's one contract that covers Dave and WWP, and it runs through 2014. B. There are two contracts (one for Dave, one for WWP) that run concurrently (through 2014). C. There are two contracts (one for Dave, one for WWP) but they do not run concurrently (i.e., the contract with WWP runs later than Dave's). Here is my stab at an answer; I don't have any one source to cite, but the NYT article on the most recent contract extension ( http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=980DEFDC1E3FF937A35757C0A9649D8B63) and the wikipedia article on Late Show have some clues. I stand ready to be corrected by my betters. I think your option A is the closest to being correct. It seems to me that CBS contracts with WWP for a show. Dave works for WWP, and presumably has a contract with them. Dave also happens to be the owner of WWP. This is what makes most casual reports of his deal with CBS ambiguous - when the NYT says that CBS has reached a deal with Dave to extend to 2014, it is not clear if that deal is with Dave, owner of WWP, or Dave, performer on the Late Show. But I think it is technically with the former. If that is correct, then a further question would be, does the contract with CBS and WWP require that Dave be the host of the show provided to CBS by WWP? I think the answer to this question must be yes. So, if your real question is, can Dave decide to leave Late Show prior to the expiration of the WWP contract, and then insert a different host into Late Night and still have that fulfill the WWP contract? I think the answer is probably no. I imagine that if Dave the performer wanted to stop hosting LN prior to the end of the WWP contract with CBS, then Dave the owner of WWP would somehow owe CBS money, and would also no longer have a deal to produce an 11:35 show for them. But I also presume that the relationship between CBS and Dave is such that if Dave really wanted to stop they would come to am amicable agreement - but one which would not necessarily give Dave, the owner of WWP, any right to name the host of any new 11:35 show. I am also assuming that, whenever Dave retires, by mutual agreement CBS and WWP may want to continue the Late Night franchise, in which case they might make a new deal to continue the show post-Dave the performer, and Dave the owner of WWP would then no doubt have quite a bit of say in who would be the second host of Late Night. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Re: [TV orNotTV] The Post-Dave Late Show (from The NBC Stars' Revenge)
Oliver is an interesting option for the post-Dave Late Show, but it does beg the question whether a late-night blocked helmed by f'rrners. I mean, I'm a huge fan of both Oliver and Ferguson, but...to use a hugely worn-out cliche, will it play in Peoria? (Or, I suppose, really, Omaha or Topeka?) Granted, it gives CBS some options with the marketing (Our late night lineup is classier because it has an accent!), but will it turn off whatever passes as a mainstream viewer at 11:35? Another interesting aspect of the mystery behind Dave's successor - there isn't an established host in the wings who could bring existing schtick with them. Dave brought almost all of his existing segments with him when he left NBC (albeit some segments - and one notable character - needed new titles due to NBC copyrights), Leno's been milking the same desk segments he's used since he was Carson's standby (maybe it's time to give Headlines a rest, Jay?), Conan brought material from his run on Late Night to Tonight and his TBS show, and Fallon will likely bring material with him when he slides up an hour. We know that even if Ferguson decides to exercise his Prince of Wales Clause (which, BTW, I would expect him to do dressed in his Prince Charles costume), he couldn't possibly bring Sid the Cussing Bunny, Secretariat and Geoff the Gay Robot Skeleton to 11:35; of course, like Conan, he could develop new bits, but he could run into the same problem Conan initially faced - his audience wanted to see the material they knew and loved, the 11:35 audience wanted the old reliable, and lots of people changed the channel. Conan was starting to pick up steam when the re-Lenoing took place, but NBC just didn't have the faith in him to give him the time he needed to find his voice as Tonight host. That brings us back to the Late Show - assuming Ferguson doesn't want 11:35, there isn't another experienced late night host with established material ready to sit in Dave's chair. Oliver brings experience in the medium through his time on TDS, but even if he establishes himself with some signature pieces this summer, they won't work in the variety show format. (Remember Dennis Miller's late night run? Not the HBO show - his syndicated late night show. The 'Weekend Update' style only goes so far in that format.) Any new host is going to need time to establish themselves, and that means the network needs to commit to a substantial pickup and get out of the way - and THAT works best with WWP running the show. If it's a new show, then I would think CBS would be more likely to own the property. Well, that is a good point. Obviously, for me Late Night/Show is not a particularly important brand, I care about Dave. I don't watch NBC's post-Dave Late Night's because I really like the Late Night show. I watched it (occasionally) because I liked Conan, and hardly at all now because I don't really care for Fallon. If NPH took over Late Show I would be unlikely to watch more than casually, while if Oliver did (I just threw that out because I thought he did such a nice job last night, not because I have any reason to think it is likely) then I would remain a loyal viewer. Dave, and not Late Show, is the brand. OTOH, NBC seems to think there is a lot of value in the name The Tonight Show - but in my case I watched it when it was hosted by Carson (though to be honest I had already dropped down to occasional viewing in the last year or so before he switched into goodbye mode) and did not watch it when a guy I did not particularly like took over. In the end the host is always going to be the key, but I suspect that there are enough viewers for whom The Late Show might be familiar and attractive to make it a better platform from which to launch a new late night CBS host than some completely new name. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! [TV orNotTV] Re: The Post-Dave Late Show (from The NBC Stars' Revenge)
I always got the impression that Carson owned his show outright, and that Late Night was a co-production (Carson/NBC), with WWP added into the mix around '91 or so. NBC had to have some claim to ownership of Dave's Late Night, otherwise the whole IP issue following his move to CBS (Viewer Mail==CBS Mailbag, Larry 'Bud' Melman==Calvert DeForest, etc.) would have been a non-issue. Also, IIRC, it was after Carson retired and Jay took over that an NBC Studios trademark started appearing on Tonight and Late Night (along with the Big Dog Broadway Video vanity cards, of course), so NBC was asserting greater control over those properties, in an effort to reinforce their lock on the 'franchise'. By contrast, CBS has no franchise. They have Dave and Craig. If WWP continues to produce CBS late night, I would expect the naming conventions to stick for continuity reasons, but also because I'm sure Dave sees value in building a franchise in the spirit (if not the shadow) of the original Tonight Show legacy. Carson Productions produced The Tonight Show and Late Night right up until Johnny retired. After that, Worldwide Pants (which had become a co-producer) got Late Night, while NBC and Big Dog always produced Jay's Tonight Show. Re: [TV orNotTV] Question for Brits about The Fall
IIRC, Torchwood started life on BBC3, migrated to BBC2 for the second series, and then over to BBC1 for Children of Earth and Miracle Day. Presumably the differing standards (and proximity to the watershed) govern what they could get away with in each series, but remember that it was Children of Earth that gave us John Barrowman's bare bottom for several seconds, not series 1. [TV orNotTV] re: today's breaking news
My fiancé gets fixated on breaking news, so I had CNN on for about 2.5 hours this evening. My takeaway: - CNN Anchors don't understand that using the phrase we don't want to speculate, but... doesn't immediately give you license to speculate wildly - As usual, the 24hr news channels spend more time vamping than reporting. At one point, I'd swear they had the international anchor literally reading specs on the B777 from the Boeing website (or Wikipedia) - Wolf Blitzer continues to prove that he's the biggest idiot in news (as opposed to news, which is where I'd classify the Fox friends). On multiple occasions he asked their aviation expert about passengers getting sucked out of the exposed tail section of the plane - which a child could tell you isn't possible since the cabin would be pressurized at sea level for landing; explosive decompression (and the accompanying suck) would only be possible at altitude, when the cabin and the outside air are at different pressures. - Blitzer part deux: in the 4:00 press conference, the SF fire chief mentioned that 60 passengers were unaccounted for. Blitzer harped on this number for an hour. At approx 5pm PDT, he did a phone interview with the SF office of emergency management, who said that at that hour, only 4 were unaccounted for. Instead of asking the obvious question - what has changed in the previous hour? - he basically accused the rep from SFOEM of lying about (or not being honest about) the unaccounted for number, and basically tried to pin the rep down on the hour-old information instead of expanding on the more updated number. After another 15 mn, they threw to the update presser at SFO, where the FD chief updated the unaccounted for number to 1 - instead of reporting the updated figure, Blitzer continued to harp on the 60 figure, and how the number provided by OEM seemed more plausible now - even though both figures were now officially out of date. It was at this point that the fiancé relented to a channel change. (It's worth nothing that MSNBC immediately picked up the 1 unaccounted figure while CNN continued to report old data.) -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Re: [TV orNotTV] Giving Tim McCarver His Due
It may just be the Yankee fan in me, but I really liked the Mariano's moment at the bottom of the 8th. For one, I thought running Enter Sandman* over the PA was a nice touch; doubly so since it's CitiField, and walk-on music for a visiting player is almost unheard of - trust me, this didn't happen during the Subway Series - so points to the Mets and/or MLB. I don't know if the players organically came to the decision to stay off the field during Mariano's walk-on or if that came down from upstairs, but I thought it was a very classy move and a great show of respect for arguably the best closer to ever play the game. My only complaint is that it felt like maybe the moment ran a little long, but that could have been because Mariano walked on directly after Neil Diamond's performance of Sweet Caroline (which, honestly, should have been attached to the 7th Inning Stretch). *Yes, Enter Sandman is Mariano's normal walk-on music. And hearing Tim McCarver trying to analyze the chorus is something I'll never unhear. It looked like they really did surprise him on air with that announcement that they were putting his scorecard in the Hall of Fame. And the only think that makes McCarver tolerable these days is seeing him through the eyes of Joe Buck - that is the kid inside Joe Buck who loved baseball and the Cardinals, and was born the year McCarver left the Cards the first time, but must have been around 4 or 5 the year he came back, and McCarver must be some kind of link for young Buck to his father. Lots of other things I could say that still bug the hell out of me about Fox's All Star game coverage, and baseball coverage in general, but that was a nice moment. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! OK, I've been working longer hours than is probably advisable lately, and admittedly I haven't stayed up to date on this story, so maybe I missed something, but...did the NTSB release the official cause of the crash? The last (credible) hypothesis I heard about had an inexperienced pilot (almost no practical time in the 777, according to multiple reports) on the stick for landing and two senior pilots effectively doing nothing (presumably one thought the other was monitoring the inexperienced pilot and vice versa). As far as shoddy workmanship...the 777 has one of the best safety records in the industry, and it's not really Boeing's responsibility to maintain the aircraft once it's sold; if Asiana didn't perform the proper maintenance on the aircraft that went down, that's on the airline. It makes zero sense as an actual proposal. The article notes that Hope had not been a host of a regular late night show, and that when Leno took over the Tonight Show his predecessor disappeared, but does not explicitly draw the relevant conclusion. Carson has the grace and class to leave the stage clear for Leno to make his own way; one wonders what might have happened if Johnny was doing a 10:00 primetime show the first 6 months of Leno's Tonight Show. If NBC, and Leno, are capable of learning anything from past experience, they will realize that they need to give Fallon a Leno-free environment and 12 to 18 months to find his own way with the show. If Kabletown really wants to still be in business with Leno, they should give him some kind of quarterly or, if necessary, monthly special on Bravo or something. Fallon could have him as a very special guest once a year; hell, in 5 years they could even have Leno come back and host a series of roasts for Howie Mandel and Pat Sajak and the like. But they must keep Leno off of NBÇ for at least 12 months, and never give him any kind of a regular show again. And if Leno had any class he wouldn't accept it if offered. -- -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! I kept thinking to myself At least they're trying harder than ESPN did with 'The Decision'..., but ultimately it was the same thing - a 30min special that could have been boiled down to 5min. Although I appreciate the fact that the Beeb got perspective from past Doctors, companions and fans (Stephen Hawking!), I found myself wishing the uberfans brought up to the live stage were a bit more polished as talking heads and/or that they'd just used past companions (YAY Bernard Cribbins - but where was Karen Gillan? David Tennant was becoming quite famous when he got the part, he'd just appeared in Casanova which was quite a big deal. I think Capaldi is a bit like Eccleston in that he's a respected actor but isn't perhaps a household name, my mother recognised him but wouldn't (until now) be able to put a name to him. Davison was certainly the most famous when he got the part. Very excited by this, anyway, Capaldi is a wonderful actor and I'd be fascinated to see how the show changes. Re: [TV orNotTV] The Story Of MTV And Stephen Colbert
I was wondering the same thing, but given the amount of setup required for that montage - past guests, visits to Charlie Rose/Fallon/AGT, the Rockettes in their rehearsal studio, Jon Stewart via Skype, HENRY KISSINGER! - I had assumed it was always the setup for Daft Punk's 'live' performance. Although...wouldn't they have actually performed Get Lucky in studio? That'd be kinda redundant. I actually thought Robin Thicke was an adequate substitute (if, indeed, he WAS a last-minute substitute), and Blurred Lines is actually a really catchy tune. That being said, I think I liked this performance better: http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/blogs/2013/08/jimmy-fallon-robin-thicke-the-roots-sing-blurred-lines-w-classroom-instruments/ As an aside, I always enjoy when Colbert has some fun with the other NYC-based hosts, my favorite being the three-way rumble with Jon Stewart Conan during the last writer's strike. Re: [TV orNotTV] As I was saying: ESPNOlbermann
Only repeated once *on The Deuce*. But I spotted two consecutive airings (at 1am and 2am EDT) on ESPNNews. Not being an avid watcher of ESPN or sports in general, a few comments: - When MSNBC moved Countdown from NJ to 30Rock, I always felt like the flags in the window behind KO were too distracting for a generally serious program. Well, ESPN decided to double-down on the distraction, because...Times Square, HELLO!. The lights, the LED billboards, and the ever-present Disney advertisement visible over KO's shoulder when he turns to face a guest. Sure, it's more appropriate for sports than news, but I miss the Murrow-style setup from the end of days on Current. - Not surprised to see the return of the old segments - Time Marches On and World's Worst - although I also wouldn't have objected to resting them for a little while. Part of the problem with World's Worst is that, much like the news-y Special Comments, when you do it every night the sting is lessened. - Didn't mind the march down memory lane on night one, especially given KO's past with the higher-ups in Bristol, but hopefully it gets dialed back significantly as he settles in. And I don't mind This Date in KO History, as long as it's kept short. - Kept waiting for him to cross the line re: Chris Christie and the Rex Ryan story, but he stuck to his 'no politics' rule. My biggest gripe was the ...as I was saying... that opened the show (and this thread). I'd have preferred to see KO make a clean break from Countdown and start fresh at the Worldwide Leader, even if the format of the show is effectively the same as what he was doing at MSNBC/Current. ...as I was saying... only serves to remind the audience about his problems with previous employers, and almost makes him the bigger story. On Tuesday, August 27, 2013 2:04:40 AM UTC-4, PGage wrote: I liked it. I still think he needs that other guy at the table with him to really shine, because it takes the edge off of his narcissistic megalomania. But even so the show works. He is smart and funny and fearless - and back in the sports context the stakes are low enough that it is possible to just enjoy and let Keith be Keith. Hopefully the sports setting will finally let some people understand that the Worst Person segment is not to be taken literally (Jim Crane is not really the worst person in the world). I could do with it being somewhat less self-referential, which maybe will decrease as time goes by, but they did note they were going to have a This Night in Keith ESPN History segment every night. The first segment was especially strong - using the silly tempest stirred up by Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News (about Rex Ryan's decision to play Mark Sanchez in the 4th quarter of a recent preseason game as a fireable offense) to illustrate how incompetent and inane most sports journalism (and by implication, non-sports journalism) has become. This was all the more interesting because KO's old partner Dan Patrick had Mehta on his show this morning as a call in guest, and I thought at the time that DP gave him the easy treatment, and seemed to be taking his side against Ryan. I wonder what DP will say about KO in the morning? The piece was similar to a recent bit Deadspin ran about how ESPN used Ron Jaworski's claim that SF 49er QB Colin Kaepernick could become one of the greatest QBs in NFL history to create and hype a fake story over a couple of day period. Perhaps not surprisingly, KO's first guest, Jason Whitlock, noted that sports journalism needed more outlets like Deadspin, to watch the watchers. Whitlock also got off the best line of the show, noting that like prison as described on The Wire - You only do two days at ESPN, the day you go in and the day you come out (like KO, Whitlock has just returned to ESPN after famously leaving under controversial circumstances). From what I can tell, ESPNOlbermann is only repeated once - and that appears to be consecutively (at 8 and then 9 pm), both on the Deuce. That is a bummer for me, as I am most likely to be able to watch something like this at the 11:00 pm hour. I would much prefer Olbermann to the current SportsCenter, but I suppose the point is they do not want to have him competing with SportsCenter. I will try to record it, but once the new tv season begins I suspect I often will not have a free socket. Sooner or later Olbermann will call Skip Bayless an idiot, or John Skipper a coward, and the implosion will begin. But until then I think ESPN just gave us back one of the better scheduled sports hours on television. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Re: [TV orNotTV] now that CBS and Time Warner have settled
I only have TV and internet, and I was able to get the X1 DVR. There's no requirement for a triple play that I'm aware of. And Mark - I'd LOVE to try the voice search, but my X1 box doesn't appear in either the Xfinity Remote or the dedicated X1 Remote apps. Comcast is, I understand, 'working on it'. As much as I hate to say it, Daly wasn't awful when he was filling in on Today earlier this summer.
