The current one is not really totally bad, it is an acceptable compromise, but by no definition it is cool and it does not give much wow-effect for potential new users and for me (after using Ubuntu from times of Warty) it is a bit boring, about as boring as some old MS Windows-look. I usually switch back to the orange/brown theme when I get bored to incomplete amateurish themes which are halfway broken. But I do not use it because it would look particularly impressive. If compared to competition though, the situation is not much better there currently, most themes in most distributions tend to be boring and very conservative, they do not have any Maccish-shine. most themes in most distributions tend to be boring and very conservative, they do not have any Maccish-shine. S'funny that, I have never sat before a Mac OS X and I am already sick to the gills of all that shine. I can't explain why, it just seems fake and distracting -- as if the bling can replace the quality of the code or the functionality. I just get suspicious when I see shiney stuff. The default theme would then be the best compromise. A theme should consist of everything; window controls, window borders, colours, theming of menus, possible translucency effects (alpha mask), icons, sounds and background image - so that everything plays nice together so that they aren't just random selection of something that happens to exist already. The brown/orange Human theme is consistent enough that there is no doubt that it has been done about that way, but I mean that all themes provided with the installation should be on the same consistency level. Even the high contrast accessibility themes should look nice (nice shapes, etc.) in my opinion. Couple of themes means maybe less than 7, a handy number that people can memorize easily and that one could possibly see at one sight in the theme selection dialog maybe even without scrolling. I use gFtp and find it to be pretty much ok. However, I do really feel it to be pretty limited compared to filezilla which I use on windows all the time. Was surprised that filezilla was already available as a package on nix, looks like it might be on the way though. It's notoriously difficult to say my favourite broadband supplier is, given that most people have experience of at most 2 :-) I've not been an IT consultant for a while, but still keep in touch with former clients: - Personally, I use Eclipse, because they are able to provide me with a block of 8 static IP addresses at no extra charge - (subject to my filling in a RIPE form demonstrating why I need them) - however, they're not so great I'd recommend them for normal home use. - One of my clients uses Nildram for about 200 home-based workers, and seems very happy with them. - My brother uses TalkTalk and finds them VERY cheap, but has had reliability problems. - Another client uses BT Internet and finds them very good (which certainly was not the case about 3 years ago!) I'd suggest a look at www.adslguide.org.uk http://www.adslguide.org.uk/ which is a rate my supplier site and therefore aggregates large numbers of customer experiences. Over the past six months, Virgin has consistently outperformed Orange.. but Nildram has consistently outperformed Virgin on speed, reliability AND customer service. Personally, given the price of them nowadays, I'd always get a router, at which point it really doesn't matter whether they provide Windows software - if your router can connect, then your linux machines can. I loose my broadband a couple of times per week for an hour or so each time. A number of times I have rang customer services about this, but gave up when the person in the call centre, located somewhere in Indian I would guess by their accent, kept trying to 'debug' my livebox despite me saying the problem was with their service. I've stopped using my Orange email address, and as soon as my contract is up, I'm off. I set up a connection with Orange and didn't bother with the CD - IMHO no-one should bother with these things, even if they were to work with Linux. Just remember the people who design those disks are only a few steps up in the same food chain as Customer Support people. Sorry I can't remember the specifics of the setup but, if I can dig something out, I'll get back to you ASAP. Accessing the settings is a doddle, though, via your web browser. Connect the Ethernet cable, get the page up (the address of this I can't recall, though have a look at the orange site for instructions for manual setup or call Orange), enter your username and password and you're in. In short, it can be done. The Orange site should have some info for securing your wireless connection. If you're unsure about this, though, post back. Quality-wise, I can't judge yet. I do know I kept getting an error message when trying to send email with my gmail account via Evolution, which wasn't happening with other connections that I use. Someone's mentioned the high quality of Virgin Media's broadband. As I write, I have a stack of four servers that need to go live next week sitting on the floor next to me. Two web-heads, two database servers - all installed with Edgy about a week ago and working nicely as a cluster. Now the key question - for SERVER use, is it worth doing the upgrade now, or should I just sit tight and stick with an installation that is working reliably and holding up under load-testing? If you were running a desktop or workstation I'd say go for the upgrade, because I'm really impressed with Fiesty. But for a server I'd stick with what's working. I use BT and have done so for the past 3 years. Mainly for their reliability and the peace of mind that not all of the helpdesks are out of country. The only downside is that they are a Windows house. The major problem I get though is contention but unfortunately that you'll get with any ISP that requires you to use a BT Land Line when they quote a maximum connection speed of 8 Mb. Where you see connection speeds above this quoted, that ISP has their own equipment in the local exchange so your traffic is routed directly to the ISP. That being said, unless you are transferring loads of info between users on the same ISP, I wouldn't go there for some time yet, as as soon as your traffic hits the www, it'll hit the same contention bottle necks that the 8 Mb users do, and really give you nothing extra. Unless you need the higher upload speeds of course. And continuing about contention, just because you have the ability to receive at 8 Mb does not mean that you may ever get to that speed reliably as the only place in the entiure route that doesn't suffer from contention is that from your home to the local exchange - no matter what the Sales literature may say. And just to stir it up some more, you could have two ADSL connections from the same ISP sitting side by side and there is no guarantee that they will operate at the same speeds either. I have seen extreme cases where a number of ADSL lines have been aggregated together to provide high bandwidth and the speeds on the actual ADSLs themselves have varied from 1.2 Mb to 6.8Mb consistently! My main confusion was that I'd read on the Ubuntu forum somewhere that there was a last minute bug found and everyone was waiting for it to be fixed (I have in mind a kernel bug related to ATA cards or something, but it is late and I've had a long day). I've lost the tab, and can't really be bothered to search through the forum thread to find the reference now - firstly it is too late, secondly there was rather too much noise on the thread for me, more like a bunch of teenage girls waiting for the latest Take That single than geeks waiting for a code release!. Anyway, I have the iso, so little lost in giving it a go tomorrow. It'll be a clean install next to an existing Windows XP install (I have the alternate CD). With any luck I'll have a usable Ubuntu system this time, although the particular machine hasn't had too much luck with the live CD so far - painfully slow even with 512M RAM on a 1.2GHz (real speed) Athlon; I have an extra 256M in there now, but lack the right size DIMMs to go any higher :( One day I'll get the time to fix my laptop install. It killed my Win2k install (largely my fault when I created space, I think the partition labeling for Win2k has changed so I need to repair the install). The networking also doesn't work, largely down to lack of decent Linux WiFi driver support. The native driver for my first card doesn't appear to support WAP (which I am committed to using on several networks), it also seems that there is a known incompatiblity with this card and the router I'm using (although that should just be down to naff Windows drivers and the firmware since the fix is to upgrade both - which I have done, but to even more recent versions than those that have the fix; so the bug must have crept back in). The second card I have to use doesn't have any native Linux drivers. So far I haven't bothered to jump through the necesary hoops to get the thing working! Anyhoo, I'm now touch typing wiht my eyes closed, so I'd better stop before my fingers get out of sync and this all starts getting to be a mess!! Given a few more months I may yet become a Ubuntu convert - it isn't for lack of trying. I just keep finding that tailoring Debian to my tastes takes less time than tailoring Ubuntu. What is the extension for the file you downloaded? Is it something along the lines of .tar.gz? It could be that you downloaded the source code. I'm not sure how stable Firefox 3 is though, as I have not yet tested it myself. I only know that it is still in alpha testing. Olá, pessoal! Ultimamente, meu Firefox tem se comportado de forma estranha. Quando eu o abro, ele começa ocupando pouco menos de 30 MB, mas conforme vou navegando, ele vai ocupando cada vez mais memória, até travar! Acabei de testar o Epiphany, e o problema persiste. Alguém sabe o que pode estar acontecendo? [Ubuntu-BR] APTonCD, pacotes do beta no release final?
Fala, Galera Ontem passei a tarde baixando programas interessantes no meu Feisty beta, para preparar um CD do APTonCD para distribuir para meus alunos. Minha dúvida é a seguinte: instalando o Feisty final release (faltam apenas 20 min de download), vale mais a pena reinstalar todos os programas e só então criar o CD do APTonCD, ou este CD - que posso criar agora, com os programas para o beta - já é suficiente? O cd fatalmente vai incluir pacotes de sistema, como o kernel, do beta (porque burramente esqueci de limpar a pasta antes de instalar os programas). Olá Alexandre, Se o seu Feisty beta estiver atualizado e voce gerar uma mídia APTonCD apartir dele, poderá sem problema nenhum instalar a mesma gama de pacotes nas máquinas com uma instalacão limpa do Feisty, sendo esta a versão final instalada do zero ou um upgrade apartir do Edgy, desde que seja o 'feisty' :) Ao instalar/atualizar as demais máquinas, adicionando a mídia APTonCD como fonte do APT (botão 'Adicionar CD/DVD...' do APTonCD), o APT automaticamente checará por se a versão dá mídia é mais nova ou antiga do que a instalada e atualizará (os pacotes que não desejar possuir na mídia basta não inserí-los ao executar o aptoncd para criar a mídia. O meu gaim (agora pidgin :P ) também vivia travando, e eu usava a versão 2 beta3. Uma solução que eu encontrei foi abrir um processo do gaim pra MSN e outro pra Jabber, o que fez os travamentos diminuírem em freqüência. Mas a solução definitiva, acredito, é atualizar para o Gaim 2.0 beta6. os travamentos no meu computador pelo menos pararam (me parece algo a ver com o msgPlus! queo pessoal instala). Existe um estudo dizendo que as pessoas sempre acabam visitando os mesmos sites e talz... não sei bem ao certo, ou usando a função voltar... algo assim, como disse não sei ao certo. Pensando nisso o Firefox tem um esquema de armazenar na memória as últimas páginas visitadas para se caso você voltar a navegar naquela página a página seja carregada mais rápida. Amigo Eu instalei o beta do Festy no meu notebook que é 2 duo e foi maravilha! Qualquer kernel novo já tem suporte a processadores com 2 nucleos. flw. Aproveitando a discussão, qual é a vantagem de instalar a partir do CD ? Porque não se faz simplesmente um 'dist-upgrade' (é assim que se escreve ?), até estar tudo feisty, pra não precisar reconfigurar tudo ? Creio que muitos não tem uma conexão boa de internet, usando dist-upgrade levaria horas para atualizar o sistema, fazendo com que seja menos entediante formatar o PC mesmo.
