Just for closure, I returned a few days ago from holiday to find the
replacement Pi from PiHut (who handled the exchange with speed and
minimal fuss), booted it up with the previously configured SD card, and
all seems well and stable. It has been playing without issue for three
or four days now, so I think we're home. Thanks for all the patience and
help in getting there. You're all great.

@THEMICKSA

Pi Hut are pretty good

They have replaced a couple or so rpi 4b for me.

They have even replaced replacements that have failed

I'm pretty sure I used the correct string in the Output Settings but
managed to copy and paste the wrong one in my msg. For the last
successful effort I was using -front:CARD=E30,DEV=0- as suggested by
@Man in a van.

All a bit beside the point now as the Pi appears to be dead. After a
good few hours last night of playing, the music just stopped and I've
not been able to boot it at all. On restart I was getting a red light
followed by three maybe four green flashes. I tried reformatting and
re-flashing the card with the PCP OS and now I'm getting eight green
flashes followed by nothing--I gather that's serious. I've asked PiHut
about exchanging the Pi. All being well I'll be able give it another go
then. Thanks for all the support.

Where did "hw:CARD=Audio,DEV=0" come from?

Should be "hw:CARD=E30,DEV=0". Are you clicking on the list under the
"more> help" to select it?

Deleting the "Output setting" field means ALSA will use the default
settings (ie CARD=0,DEV=0) which may be OK, but depending on your RPi
and setup, it might default to the Headphones or HDMI output.

I wonder why my E30 works perfectly?

I only bought it for testing/developing USB DACs on pCP but
unfortunately I set it to DAC mode, set pCP up in a couple of minutes,
and it has worked ever since.

I have only ever used pCP8 betas and pCP8.0.0.

I wonder if its the E30 firmware.

I would recommend stop using the E30 remote.

no mistake. expanding to 100% is perfectly ok (that's what I do). And
the message you are getting is correct (can't expand any larger after
100%). And once expanded, one cannot downsize the card. So all is as

The "Add a Topping E30 USB DAC" topic was written by me and is what I
have done on my system. It's been working perfect for me.

The E30 needs to be powered before pCP starts. There is no automatic USB
detection of the DAC. That's why I power it via the RPi4B USB.

Once the E30 was configured, I haven't needed to use the E30 remote
control.

I've used both remote and manual means of controlling the E30. Is there

My first attempt was with the Pi's USB port. But suspecting that might
be an issue, subsequent efforts have all been with the E30 powered
separately.

That said, the advice at the Topping setup page
(https://docs.picoreplayer.org/projects/add-topping-e30-usb-dac/)
suggests otherwise:
"Step 4 - Connect Topping E30 USB DAC
Connect the 2 USB cables (supplied) from the Raspberry Pi USB2 ports to
Topping E30"

On temperature, good to know that overheating shouldn't be an issue for
now.

As of now, if I connect pi without the USB cable output to E30, it will
start, with IPs for both LAN and wifi visible on the network, but
Squeezelite will not run. Is that because the Output Settings for the
E30 are reading hw:CARD=E30,DEV=0. i.e Squeezelite finds no device and
can't load?

If I start up with everything connected, the music flows for a few
minutes then stops and the Pi disappears from the network entirely.

Might there still be issues with IP addresses? I've set no static IPs,
but maybe that would make a difference?

Throughout the process I have left the pi connected via Ethernet
directly to the router? Is that correct procedure?

Any logs I can consult or forward that might suggest the problem?

thx

Are you providing separate power to the Topping? Do not try to power
this from the Pi's USB ports. If you are supplying a separate power
feed from a separate power supply, then this would have no impact on the
PI. If you are powering the E30 from the pi, voltage issues would most
definitely cause the pi4 to crash.

Pi4's should not crash if they overheat.they have an internal
throttle mechanism for thermal management. You can monitor your pi4

OK, so I'm back again sorry to say. Not a pCP problem this time, so
maybe I should take this elsewhere. As I mentioned previously, I just
got a new DAC (a Topping E30) and I set it up as per the instructions
here https://docs.picoreplayer.org/projects/add-topping-e30-usb-dac/. It
sounds fabulous, and a great upgrade for me, but I've had repeated
crashes. To be fair I've been cranking up the volume but after ten
minutes or so nothing. So I'm wondering if overheating is the issue as
I've read that pis (in this case a 4B) are prone to that. I'm happy to
buy a suitable fan or heatsink to resolve the issue but wanted to check
that overheating is indeed the issue here--it's been running at a lower
volume for quite a while now and hasn't yet crashed again. But there are
days when you wanna party, you know!

So, to be specific, is it possible to verify the issue, through
diagnostics or otherwise? Do pis just crash when they get too hot? And
if so, any recommendations for the best solution? My setup is simple: pi

created a simple custom /wpa_supplicant.conf. I've no idea if that made

So you are connected with Ethernet, but trying to switch to WiFi?

What do you get when you run wifi diagnostics?

Did wifi work before, with the linksys router?

Is a "fixed IP" the same as Static address? Either way, no is the
answer. There is a facility on the router to "reserve" IP addresses but
I have not added the pi to that list yet.

I spoke too soon. Everything was playing nicely until suddenly the music
died. After a bit more fiddling around I discovered that my Linksys
router was misbehaving. After various resets etc. it turned out it was
actually bricked, and following a long session with Linksys support the
firmware was upgraded and wifi was restored. However when I come to run
pCP I find that I'm unable to connect to wifi.

The IP addresses of everything in the house got changed in the process
but I can see the pCP page at its new home on the network. I've
faithfully followed the instructions at
https://docs.picoreplayer.org/how-to/setup_wifi/ but it keeps resulting
in the message Wifi IP: is missing - [Reboot] or [Save] to connect. The
router can see the wifi pi (with a different MAC address from the
ethernet one) but I'm stumped as to how to continue. I've checked and
rechecked the SSID, pwd etc. but to no avail. I've even consulted the
boot and wifi logs but can't really understand what I'm seeing. If it
would help to post any of that I'm happy to do so. Can anyone suggest a
solution?

No don’t call me Ronnie :)

How to stop LMS on VB2.3 - from memory it’s - “systemctl
squeezeboxserver stop”

On VB2.4 it’s “service logitechmeduaserver stop”

Then you need to switch the Zen player to the new LMS. Easily done via
the web gui.

Once you’ve got it all going investigate Material skin, Music & Artist
Information and BBC Sounds plugins.

Thanks for the generous feedback and suggestions. I'm happy to report
that PCP and LMS are up and running, although I've still had no luck in
mounting the Zen to the LMS media library. That said I'm able to see and
play all the files on the drive via the Remote Libraries plugin--It's
just another click away. Unless any of the below info makes the
difference, or there are other drawbacks I've not envisaged, I can live
with that. And stop bothering you all with dumb questions. Your patience
is much appreciated.

I have set no pwd on the Zen, so I have left Username and Password
blank. But might cifs-utils be relevant to constructing a valid
pathname?

very convenient.

This is the path to my main music collection:
smb://192.168.1.145/files/music/flac
Though this also works: smb://Zen/files/music/flac
and yes there are also a few read-only folders which are addressed like
this:
smb://192.168.1.145/music_readonly/flac
I've never felt the need to use the read-only path, and haven't set a
password for music/flac. Might permissions be an issue? They appear
identical to me as Admin user.

Yeah, I think this is the long standing problem. I'm only on 2.3, which
if I recall could not run the later versions LMS I need for Spotty, BBC
sounds, Mixcloud etc.

LMS is now turned off on on the VB, and Squeezelite shows (and plays) on
the Mac. Curious to know what you mean about "depending on the version
installed."

Thanks, I tried those settings to no effect, though curious about your
mention of using something from the pathway for Share Name. The more>
advice says to not use "/". I tried using the folder name of flac, but
no good.

If I was starting out again that's probably what I would do but that
would leave me with a £700 CD ripper! If I knew what I was doing (and as
noted, I don't really) I'd upgrade Vortexbox so it could handle LMS or
install some other OS on there (presuming that's possible). Also I was
curious to have a play with the Rpi--it's a lockdown thing I expect.

I'm just thinking that the full pathway may help in connecting by CIFS
from the raspberry pi - if it is at all possible

If the op has a back up disk I would say use that, connected to the pi

Or copy them onto a disk via the Mac

I don't see the sense of running LMS on a pi and keeping the files on
the ZEN, either run the Zen or get rid of it.

Ronnie

By default VB puts music into /storage/music but it’s exposed by SMB as
“music-readonly” or “files/music” IIRC. The latter is editable, the
former isn’t.

(I’ll check in the morning)

VB 2.4,includes LMS 7.8 but it can be upgraded to 8.3 - not sure why he
has not gone this route.

LMS on the VB will need to be switched off but fortunately the
instance(s) of Squeezelite are completely separate to LMS and are not
“local player plugin” so should continue to work. How you switch LMS
off depends upon the version installed.

Before troubleshooting the sound I’d get the pCP reading the VB files
correctly. I don’t think VB has NFS server running so the mount will
need to be CiFS. The default admin user is root/vortexbox.

Oh dear. Sorry to say but it appears you really don’t know what you are
doing.

Let’s go back a bit.
The Innuos box is just a PC in a fancy case that runs a version of Linux

Sorry but I don't know the technicalities of the difference between a
NAS and an external hard drive, nor what a "Vortexbox appliance" might
be. I was under the impression that a NAS could run software and be seen
on the network as as a separate device, without being connected to a pc,
but I may well have that all wrong.

I've been rummaging through user manuals at home and online and there's
not much relevant detail*. It came preconfigured with Vortexbox as the
OS and LMS running on that. On the mac I can reach Vortexbox via browser
at the Zen's IP address, and its version of LMS at the same address on
port :9000. In the Mac finder, smb:// mounts as Volumes/files/ with
various subfolders for /music/flac, /music/mp3 etc.

Innuos stopped using Vortexbox a few years back in favour its own
operating system. I'm sure it's great, but I rather resented the fact I
would have to ship the box back to them for an OS upgrade at a cost of
£75 each time.

Meanwhile I've still not been able to mount via CIFS. Interestingly
perhaps I just noted that the main page of Vortexbox lists its
"Filesystem" as /storage. Might that be a clue?

In other news, I tried turning off all other LMS players except
"piCorePlayer", reserved its IP at that address, restarted everything,
including the router, but we're still pretty much where we were. I can
connect to the Zen via Remote Libraries, see all my music listed and the
LMS appears to be playing them and streaming from various sources.
Should I be able to hear that through the Pi's mini jack output? Cos
right now I can't.

PS what's the deal with the slimdevices site? One minute it's there, the
next it's gone. Or have I broken that as well?

Cheers and thanks

Paul, you nail it when you talk about being confused between players and
servers on LMS. I've been using LMS for 12 years or so, but it still
bends my mind sometimes.

I'm going to spend time today trying, as you suggest, turning off
everything (including wifi) except the Pi. From the rest of the
conversation (thanks for your advice everyone) I'm going to concentrate
on mounting via CIFS/SMB, though I'm not sure I understand your later
advice on that Paul. I'll be back!

DESIRED HARDWARE STATE:

The NAS box sits with the main hifi system and is connected via DAC and
RCA jacks.

At the top of the house I have a Squeezebox Touch that I use only to
play out to powered speakers.

Right now the functioning LMS server is running on my MacMini desktop,
which is not ideal. But I do still listen music on the mac (with powered
desktop speakers), via the Local Player plugin and would like to
continue doing that.

In all, I had envisioned the Pi as the single LMS server for the above
players(?), using the NAS drive (or whatever it is, technically
speaking) as the library.

PS does this forum's server regularly fall over? I haven't been able to
connect for some hours until now.

His NAS is in fact a Vortexbox. Initially referred to as a NAS but later
revealed to actually be a VB which he was trying to connect to his Pi by
USB.

I don’t think NFS is installed on VB so he will have to connect his Pi

cifs-utils will handle the SMB versions automatically. The reason that
it is not included by default...it adds 30MB of dependencies..
pCP is the minimalist approach to an OS.

I don't think I see an option on the NAS to do that. As mentioned that's
running VortexBox SW Version: 2.3 and the interface for that only has a
System Config page to set the IP of the NAS itself. Don't think I can
see a way around that.

I will do as you suggest on the Wifi bit and report back

for CIFS, vers=3 is not valid. This the way the kernel developers
chose to do this, so please don't shoot me.

And are you sure your NAS supports SMB version 3 protocol? Have you
tried vers=2.0 or even vers=1.0?

Lots of distractions so lets start with some basics.

Players do not "See" music. It is the LMS server that "Sees" the music
library, and then sends it to a player. You could very easily have the
piCorePlayer player device connecting to your Mac LMS server. If you
are getting confused with multiple LMS servers shut them all down except
one.

Also forget about players at this point. Players not playing music is a
completely different set of things to work on, and they are not really
related.

Please describe your desired hardware state.

Thanks for the reply Paul. The more> links have proved very useful in
the setup process, but in the case of the network mount I'm not sure I
understand what it's trying to tell me. After a bit more fiddling about
I can now see piCorePlayer listed among the available players in the LMS
web interface. But I also see listed a second player named Zen, that has
the same IP address. (Would that name have been picked up from the mount
point I set: /mnt/Zen ?) Any idea what that means?

Both players are able to see the contents of the NAS by using Remote
Libraries (there's a very old instance of LMS running there, that I
can't update, but is obviously still able to manage my FLAC library)
With the Zen player selected, when I try to play something, nothing
happens. With the piCorePlayer selected, the tracks do appear to play
but I'm unable to get anything through the Pi's USB output to the
amplifier (via a USB Dragonfly DAC).

Presumably if things were working properly I should be able to see (and
scan) the NAS files directly in the My Music screen?

On the subject of IP addresses, I'm also confused that there appear to
be two points of connection, in my case 192.168.1.133 and 192.168.1.135.
Is that normal behaviour? One for wifi one for ethernet?

On the samba question, yes I misunderstood its purpose. I presumed it
was to enable Pi to cope with SMB addresses. That's one blind alley I
can cross of the list.

Questions, questions. I'm sorry to appear so clueless.

Thanks again

USB ports on NAS will probably only power the Pi. You won’t be able to
access drives on the NAS that way.
Instead mount the drives via CIFS/NFS not as USB as you do with your Mac

First issue is. For NFS, vers=3.0 is not valid, it is only vers=3

Samba is only for sharing files on the pCP device to other computers.
It is not used or needed for connecting to your NAS.

piCorePlayer a small player for the Raspberry Pi in RAM.
