This morning I was tying hare ears nymphs, thus afternoon it will be

Re: [VFB] re: Whiting hackle bad colors

2016-07-03 Thread ashley strutt
Hi Joyce,

It might also be due to the company that you bought them off. A friend of
mine ordered from them last year and asked for specific colours of hackle.
What he got was way of colour and when he contacted them the person who
runs the company was what can only be described has nasty so I won't deal
with them. Personally I also like to only buy hackle I can see and examine
my self.

I just got an order of Whiting rooster saddles from Lakeland Flytying
in the UK> These were to be black/claret dyed, fiery brown and lake olive.
I was amazed at how bad the colors were. The black claret has no claret,
just straight purple on the black. The fiery brown has no brown, rather a
red/orange color, and the lake olive is yellow gold, no green in the mix. I
have compared this hackle color with the same hackle colors that I had on
thiss colored hackle from Whiting before, This dye job must have been done
by someone who is color blind. I am wondering, does Whiting do the dying
or is this bad color job done by Lakeland flytying? I would appreciate any
input at all. This has really put me off on Whiting dyed rooster saddles.

I tend you only use about six anyway, black, white, yellow, red, orange and
brown. I could also add mono which is clear and doesn't count to the six
because it doesn't have colour.

2015-11-12 Thread ashley strutt
I would agree that the older issues are of a higher quality. I still get
it in case I can pick up any new ideas. For example, the autumn issue
has an article on coyote fur for saltwater flies which I want to try.
Got to get some quality fur first, just try that in the UK!

I have actually stopped subscribing because they kept messing up my
subscription through incompetence so get mine through ebay which
actually turns out to be slightly cheaper and I get my issues earlier
than if I subscribed. I think that the Editor and the company who own it
are at fault for its degeneration.

Re: [VFB] Soft hackle Streamer

2015-04-01 Thread ashley strutt
Hi Jack,

I saw Jack tie it several years ago. He tied the hackle in as if tying a
sift hackle fly and then combed the hackle back with an eye lash comb to
get the effect he wanted. I will double check his book in a little while
but I am sure that is how he did it.

I had problems when last time I subscribed to the print version so I
cancelled, then went to digital and no problem for a couple of years then
they changed software or new service or something which switched me for
some reason to print again, plus not being able to log in and I was left
owed 3 copies hence cancelling and buying of eBay. I rang them several
times and told it will be sorted but it never was.

told them that I had not received it. They said they would add another
issue to my subscription. I told them I did not want that I wanted the
Winter issue as I have every copy from Issue #1 and I don't want to miss an

Re: [VFB] Dying feathers with Rit dye ???

2014-11-21 Thread ashley strutt
Hi Chuck,

Black is notorious for being very difficult to dye with fabric dyes such as
Rit (and dylon). From experience, I wouldn't bother wasting your time with
black Rit but try and find a black dye that is stronger, when I get around
to it I will be searching for one myself.

Personnally, I would always add the vinegar.

the salt but not the vinegar as it said to only use the vinegar with salt
if the material is silk or wool and not cotton. Brought the water to a

jet black like the dye is.

Now is my problem in that. He saved the water as I have a ton of grizzly

Ashley
On 21 Jul 2014 02:00, Neville Gosling nev.gosl...@shaw.ca wrote:

One of the pleasant problems of living in British Columbia is the diverse
fishing opportunities that it offers the fly fisherman.

I start my season in March April tying chironomid or buzzers as they are
known in the UK. This is lake fishing for rainbow trout with usually starts
late April for me. Hook sizes from 12 to 18 with 14 the most common.

As the season progresses, the rivers which in the early season are high
due to seasonal snowmelt drop and river fishing for rainbows and bull trout
   dolly varden come into season.
This requires weighted flies such as stoneflies and prince nymphs for the
rainbows and large heavily weighted attractor flies for the bull trout.
Later as the rivers drop further, the opportunity for fishing the dry fly
comes usually in sizes 12-16 while smaller lighter nymphs soft hackles
 are also useful.

When August comes around, the opportunity for summer run steelhead occur
in mid northern BC, and another lot of flies are required from surface
skaters to wet flies, intruders and tube flies dependant upon conditions.
Also, at this time of the year, there are runs of pink (every 2nd year)
chinook salmon in the ocean which require different flies from very small
 to very large.

October is coho salmon time in the rivers, and again the most suitable
flies are usually a different size and style.

Finally, in the winter, there are winter run steelhead which generally
require large attractor flies fished deep. I do very little of this,
because don't like taking a rock to stand on!

As a result, in the past 40 odd years of fly tying, I have built up more
tying materials than I have room for, but I never have exactly what I need
to tie the particular fly that has caught my eye for a certain fish or
 application.

How do you store your materials?

How do you find the materials that you need right now?

How do you keep them organized?

I have tried various ways i.e. by material type - synthetics, foam, fur
feathers etc. - By excel spreadsheet and numbered plastic shoe type
boxes, sets of numbered plastic drawers - but it is still less than
 satisfactory.

I try to organize my fly boxes by fly and fish type, with one large drawer
of trout fly boxes with sub categories for chironomid, dries, nymphs etc
and another drawer for steelhead and salmon flies.

My fly tying tools also need more organization as I can never seem to find
what I want without a search sometimes, not even then.

I would appreciate any ideas that the list members have.

Re: [VFB] BEWARE OF PICASSA AND GOOGLE PLUS!!!!!!

2014-03-23 Thread ashley strutt
Hi Chuck,

99% of people don't even read the terms and conditions before clicking OK.
Think I may have been one of the few who actually realised all my pictures
would be uploaded. Picassa now seems to be a part of Google plus which I
have disabled on my phone (no auto upload) and won't allow it on my laptop.
Basically just use the email.

Ashley

Folks: Just FYI. If you use Picasa, or Google plus, be aware that every
photo on your hard drive might be being shared with the world (or at least

WAS a legit offer. I have been playing the free sample game: for yrs.
But on this one, as I read the Terms of Service and of course in the tiny
print it said something like by clicking agree you are agreeing to
 install picasa and/or Google+.

So, I went to Google+ just to check it out, and what did I find??? only
8.3 GIGS of my own pics. Now, none was anything I wouldn't share with the
world, BUT, that should be MY CHOICE, not some lawyers lingo and his
terms of service and tiny print. And even if I inadvertently clicked I
agree on some terms of service on something as innocent as free samples
of Tide detergent for example, don't you think either Picasa, and/or
Google+ could have the decency to pop open a whole screen for you to fill
in your personal info, click what you did and did NOT want to be shared,
like photos etc?? Any up and up company would have done so IMHO. I think
Google has Gotten too big for their britches and my wife has had me using
Bing as a search engine for a some time now, and it's actually a better
 search engine IMHO anyway...

I would still use Google at times, as old habits die hard, but you can bet
I won't use it again unless my life depended on it. How many pp, even if
they do read the terms of service ACTUALLY understand them fully?? 1%
MAYBE??? Come to find out that I guess Google owns Picasa, and it's just
another way of sharing photos, like Photo bucket etc. But, at least I was
FULLY AWARE when I created myself a Photo Bucket acct.

Then, I had to get my wife to UNINSTALL all that junk, and she works for
MICROSOFT as a support tech, and even she had to study it for an hour to
figure out how to turn it off/delete it. Anyway, if you use either Picasa,
and/or Google+ and find out your pics are being shared with the world and
don't want them to be, just write to me and I'll give you the step by step
(because there is ONE step (ie I Agree) to get the program, but MANY steps,
which must be taken in the right step by step or you'll never get rid of
it, or at least turn off the photo sharing part of it. I was sooo mad
when I found out I'd been tricked, if I could have reached through the
screen and choked whoever was/is responsible for this, I would have LOL...

[VFB] magazine swap

Hi All,

I have been having bit of a clear out this week and before I put some
early issues of Fly Fishing and Fly Tying Magazine on ebay I am
wondering of there would be any interest in swapping them for recent
issues of FlyTyer.

I was subcribing to Flytyer digital version but they have massively
messed my account up and I cann't get my issues so I'm going back to
paper (its actually cheaper to buy new through issues through ebay as I
recently discovered). But I do need some back issues to make the
collection complete as I use it more as a library and reference

WHy not? Nobody has stepped up yet so I'll volunteer to be swap meister.
Or is it swamp meister after last week's Florida trip?

 Swap are rules simple:

 *ROPE DUBBED SWAP RULES: *

 (1) Tie a dozen of ANY rope-dubbed fly. MUST be rope-dubbed, preferably
 with ice dub or equivalent.

 (2) A MAXIMUM of 13 swappers. Each person ties 12 flies. You don't get
one of your own back. If you want one of your own, tie it but don't mail
 it.

 (3) Christmas is always a busy time and January is the doldrums
 month. Therefore the line*:
Get the flies *to me* by February 7, 2014. That means *get them
mailed no later than January 31.*
*(At my antiquated age I don't like any word with the subword dead in
 it!)

 (4) When mailing, include return postage, or a SASE envelope.

 My address:
 Allan Fish
 614 Brushwood Way
 Greenwood, IN 46142

I reviewed all the replies to Don. Here are the entries so far:
 1. Don Ordes
 2. Allan Fish
 3. Mike Bliss
 4. Pete Gramp
 5. Peggy Brenner
 6. Chuck Alexander - maybe
 7. Alan Single-L DiSomma
 8. Ashley Strutt
 9. Rick Zieger if he can find his dubbing
 10. Wayne Blake-Hedges
 11. Bob Haering
 12. J. Balmer
 13.

*ONLY ONE OPENING LEFT - REPLY QUICKLY IF YOU WANT IN. And, no, I will NOT
expand it for late-comers. First come, first swapped! *(There were at
least three requests for keeping the number of flies small - I'm including
 myself)

Now hoping to spend more time working near home so I can tie flies and
train hard for my black belt grading/test which starts in February.

I like the idea of a swap. Not sure about Polar bear use and sending. Ice
dubbing is fine. I see an Arctic theme here...penguin feathers? :-)

I’ll start. Got my diabetes on the run. Off insulin now (un-officially)

key for me. Up to a mile on the treadmill now- walking, jogging, and
wind-sprinting up to 6 mph so far with incline. Two months ago a 5 min. *2

and after the cool-down. Have lost 45 pounds so far (less of me to love).
 Who-hoo!

Anyone interested in *fly swaps* now that winter is here? Something with
 ice-dubbing? or polar bear?

Re: [VFB] Kamasan hooks - equivalent needed

Hi Pete,

From experience I would go for any wet fly hook you have. The B175 happens
to be what is easily available.

pond. Does anyone here know of a substitute hook that I may have? I have
lots of daiichi, dai riki, mustad, tiemco, gamakatsu, and a handful of

 Any help is much appreciated,

The wing is Congo hair and is supported with EZ tubing to help flair it a

might change this to fabric paint with sparkles.

Very interesting look- very 'buggy'. But you'll need a tool- a copper

synthetics. Works with rope-furled natural fur dubbings= leeches worms.

Re: [VFB] re: skinning mallard question

2012-10-17 Thread ashley strutt
Hi Joyce,

I've skinned a few ducks. Basically I slit the bird along the breast up to
the base of the beak. Cut around that then carefully peel the skin back.
When you get to the wings try and peel the skin back along the wing to get
the bulk of meat and cut the wings when you can get no further. Continue
with the peeling until you reach the tail and cut. I use a craft knife as
I have found it better for skinning for tying.

After skinning, sock the skin in mild detergent for a couple of hours to
try and get the grease out. Rinse the soap out and dry with newspapers. Saw
dust may also be worth a try.

Lay flat and rub borax into the skin with extra around the wings. Replace
this borax after a couple of days with fresh.

Hope that helps

best to get out the wing bones and meat while saving the feathers, is there
a best way? Also how about the head..the bill is still on it as well. Do I
slit it under the neck or from the top of the head and attempt to remove
the skul with the bill? How about the legs..slit down the front and remove
the feet? Inquiring minds would like to know how to best save every feather
of these birds. When they are completely skinned, I'm planning to bury
them in Borax for a time until the skin is all dried out. I await advice.
 Thanks. Joyce

[VFB] Tying light set up

2012-09-24 Thread ashley strutt
Hi all,

Seeing as though I no longer have uni assignments I find myself with alot
of tying time. I've been thinking recently about upgrading/restocking my
tying area. The only I think could be alot better is the lighting set up. A
moment I have a angle-pose desk light with day light bulb but I think for
the amount of tying I plan and to prevent eye strain I want to improve it.
So I am wondering what others have as there set up.

I'm considering 2 options. The first is a second light as before for dual
lighting. The other is a new single light.

What are the lists thoughts/opinions on tying lighting.

Also, whats the general feeling towards back boards?

Hi All;
Speaking of swaps, do you save your swap flies or use them?
I recently got all the swap flies I've recieved over the years(yeah
I just saved them) and laid them out on our dining room table. I
know but my wife is out of town all week and I have the house to
myself, have to clean them up completely tonight. What I found was,
I DONT NEED TO TIE ANY MORE FLIES FOR A WHILE! Unless a very
specific pattern is required, I pretty much have all my bases
covered, trout dries, nymphs, soft hackles, wets, warmwater-
deerhair bass bugs, streamers, poppers, panfish poppers, wets,
nymphs, etc.
I filled a soap box with just chilipeppers, one with soft
hackles, one with panfish poppers, it goes on and on. I have two
plano 3650 boxes crammed full of various wooly buggers/worms.
Anybody else see this trend? Oh, by the way I decided I'm going to
load them in fly boxes and fish them this year.

deer hair and stripped bass flies. If I find a picture or something
connected with the swap name then I will mount them. But this will not
happen for a while.

Hi Ron,

I think what a splitback nymph is, is a nymph such as a hares ear tied
as normal BUT it as a wing which comes out of the thorax area with the
wing case pulled over as normal but with it goes eother side of the wing.

I had one which had a small wing of snowshoe rabbit.
