[VFB] Re: QFTD

2015-10-02 Thread Neville Gosling
I feel that things have changed since Haig-Brown wrote this or maybe it is just
me, but I am not as hopeful as I used to be. 2015 has been a poor year for me -
rivers have been closed due to high temperatures and low water, lake fishing
has not followed the norms and my friends and I are in agreement that the
insect hatches are not what they used to be, yet the fish are still there. One
river in particular went catch and release many years ago but the bull trout
which is treated as an endangered species in USA are now much more common and
this has I believe affected the lies and habits of the wild rainbow trout,
especially the juvenile trout. We now have to search for trout in different
lies and places and not the familiar old spots.

ibuprofen( a popular over the counter inflammatory drug).  Seventy to 80
percent of this drug is not used by our bodies and excreted.  It has been
detected in surface waters as well as in various fish tissues.  Fish exposed to
ibuprofen in the lab can have abnormal spine and bone growth.  A study a the

Mark: Yeah, It's the first fly fishing/tying book I ever bought and I have read
mine probably a dozen times. In my book, I do my level best NOT to talk about
the exact things they talk about, but it's hard not to , cause so many things
overlap. I just really do think there is room for another bluegill book on the
market..Don't get me wrong. The Wilson's is an AWESOME book. I just think that
if Trout can have thousands of books, then a bluegill should be able to have at
least two, specially since it is the MOST sought after fish species (at least
freshwater) bar none. Thing is, there's not so many zillions of money in the
latest and greatest (expensive) tackle lures, fly patterns etc as there are for
other species to make all that money off of. And, I have wanted to write a
book all my life, so it was a perfect fit. I was just waiting for a subject
(cause all I wish to write is non fiction) that I felt strongly enough about to
write a whole book, and that happened to be fly fishing/tying for bluegills
(the working title is How to catch 100 Bluegills per day on a Fly Rod). Man,
thing that slows me down is that I'm a redneck hillbilly trying to write a
book without murdering the king's English too bad LOL. Plus, I get to put great
pics of my kids and grandkids fly fishing (and catching bluegills) with me in
the book, and that is a great feeling. Good thing I have a great editor (Mr.
Fish) who stays on my A$$. I think he has worn out about three red ink pens
making corrections and the book is just over half finished LOLOL. Sorry for
writing a book here LOL.. Chuck

This is absolutely true. Bluegills say, unlike bass who will see something,
inhale it and taste it later. Ppl have told Me I don't fish for bluegills
cause they are too easy to catch. The tiny butterbeans may be too easy to
catch, but for the hubcaps that my book is about, they can be as picky as any
fish that swims. They check out EVERY piece of food before taking it. 90% of
the hits we get, we don't even realize they hit it cause it happens sooo fast.
I am also one who believes that ounce for ounce, pound per pound, the bluegill
fights as hard as any fish in the water. The reason is simple. Look at his body
shape. ROUND. And when hooked, he don't jump out of the water like a trout or
bass, but rather turns his flat, round body at a 90 degree angle to the
anglers, making him the fightingest son of a gun in the water. IMHO of course
LOL, Chuck

In clear water, you can sometimes watch bluegills rise to the fly, then stop
and observe it for several seconds before sipping it in. Consequently, your
retrieves should be extra slow with long pauses. Some anglers claim bluegills
are the strongest fish in freshwater.

2009-10-08 Thread J Balmer
It wasn't here, it was up on the Minnesota side of the Boundary Waters 30
years ago. I was flinging a beetle spin in top of lily pads dropping it
into open water trying to catch dinner on a camping trip. I thought I had a
northern until I got it close to the canoe. It was a little bigger than a
dinner plate, 3 lbs 14 ozs according to the spring scale. Biggest I've
caught on a fly rod was a pound 12 ozs, but still a lot of fun on a 5 wt.

[VFB] Re: QFTD

2009-10-07 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
Since we have very few Tail Waters in the deep South and therefore few
trout, I'd say Bluegills would be the most popular inshore fly rod
species. I grew up in Alabama and fished the backwaters of Pickwick and
Wilson Lakes. My first fishing was with Heddon fly rod that Dad got me
for my 8th birthday. With it, I fished for every Alabama species
imaginable, but especially the Bluegill. Tied my own flies with my
Herter fly tying kit. There's nothing quite like hooking a 3/4 pound
Bull Bluegill on a light weight fly rod. In late Spring when the Mayfly
hatch comes, Bluegills by the hundreds will lie in wait under the
branches of willows waiting for the fall. I witnessed this first hand
many times. The most fun I ever had was my Dad and I catching over 100
Bluegills in a little over an hour. That was before C R, so we took
all home and I cleaned them. BTW, the world record 4 pound 12 ounce
Bluegill was caught April 9, 1950 in Keytona Lake, just outside of
Birmingham, AL. Considering how hard even small Bluegills fight,
imagine the battle that monster would put up on a fly rod. If you've
never tried Bluegills, you're missing out on some really enjoyable fly
rodding.

[VFB] Re: QFTD

2009-10-07 Thread chuckalexander
Chuck

Mark.

Actually, Wayne said it correctly by inherently inferring that flies are tied
to impress people. Very subtle. Very astute. Nearly poetic. Very nicely
done.

a.

Wrong, a fly fisher can be impressed..a fish can only be fooled, or
tricked. Wayne needs to choose his words better.

It's frequently difficult to maintain correct color one dubbing becomes
wet and translucent. Thank the hook shank: it's in the middle of
everything, soaking up light like a dark heart defeating every effort to

partially solves the problem. My solution is to start tying the body

2009-08-28 Thread Don Ordes

OK, Skunked again. :o(

Went over there, and the program would load up, then crash in 3 seconds.
Tried a few different ways to load it, and all crashed. He was in it
yesterday OK, so he couldn't tell what was wrong. He will work on it, burn
a new DVD, and bring it over later this weekend. He says it looks really
good now with the new video pieces added.

Rene, dog and cat fur are great for rope-dubbing.

On that, I'm headed over to do what should be the final review of the DVD.
Summer is the busy time for the videographer, so it's taking a little longer
than I planned.

I've had a couple of guys view it, and it's all been double-thumbs-up so
far.

2009-08-19 Thread J Balmer
Just read my past posts on the Fish Slappers of Lake Taneycomo. I've also
had to move on other occasions because someone encroached while I was
wading, people in boats pulling up next to me casting across where I was
fishing worst of all, speed boats personal water craft flying by.

It's not just fishing, either.

I couldn't tell which brand of caddis they might be, and didn't take
time to collect any - one gets into these choices, when the travel schedule is
a bit heavy and the fishing time is a bit short, between the desire to collect
the insects upon which trout are feeding, or the conflicting desire to collect
a tithe of the trout that are feeding on the insects, based on a guess about
what the insects might be, and an estimation about which fly might match them.

[VFB] Re: QFTD

2009-08-12 Thread J Balmer
I used to keep a journal, but I haven't had that kind of time for a while.
IT was helpful when I tournament fished, but most of that info I keep in my
head now. Sort of. Halfsheimers you know. If you fish long enough, like
everything else you do long enough, a lot of that becomes ingrained. One way
it would help fly fishing is matching the hatch w/out capturing; if you have
enough data from the particular water, or type of water, weather conditions,
time of year food sources for that location you'll have enough info to
come close. Knowing the terrain is more helpful to me now.

There’s a reason why we call it our Annual Trout Kicking Expedition besides the
time I tripped over a rainbow. In the upper mile a half, when the water’s low
enough to wade, there can be twenty to thirty fish using you as a current
break. If you stand still too long, the larger fish will bump your ankles
trying to get you to move so you’ll turn the rocks. Last year the water was
high most of the time except for one day the only time we could wade was from
5 AM until 7 or 7:30. Still caught lots of fish, so you should have fun. Watch
for the fish slappers in the outlets near the dam, you’ll know what I’m talking
about when you see them.

water was high most of the time except for one day the only time we could
wade was from 5 AM until 7 or 7:30. Still caught lots of fish, so you should
have fun. Watch for the fish slappers in the outlets near the dam, you'll
know what I'm talking about when you see them.

Healing Waters is a GREAT ORG. I have sent them over 1000 flies from swaps
of the last three years. Any extras are sent as well as most of the ones
swapped. Also have donated over 2k in supplies, books tools for the VA in
Reno. When I get better, I plan on teaching tying some simple flys (buggers.
streamers, the usual, elk hair caddis, bead head nymphs and some mini jigs).

Just a side note: Over 1/2 of all veterans in the VA medical system have or
have had Hep C.
There are other disibilites that agent orange is responsible also.

TKX. for the warning J.B. Misako and i are going to be part of a team
working for Project Healing Waters from Sept. 18th thru the 21st on
Taneycomo and in a classroom of some sort. We're teaching fly casting, fly
fishing and fly tying to bout 50 vets.
Should be fun and our lodging and food are bein' taken care of. Was a
definate no-brainer when they contacted us.
I've heard the stories of big browns smackin' into people night fishin'
there. We're in Branson farily often, but it'll be our first time to fish
Taneycomo. Hope the vets do well.

FISHING HAS A REPUTATION as an innocuous, fairly mindless pastime enjoyed
most by shiftless people. Perhaps that impression would be lessened if
nonfishers understood more about wild water. Calling fishing a hobby is like
calling brain surgery a job. The average visitor driving through Yellowstone
sees no farther than the surface of the water. At best the lakes and streams
are mirrors reflecting the surrounding scenery. For the alert fisherman,
especially the fly fisherman, the surface is not a mirror but a window.
