[EMAIL PROTECTED] The Energizer Bunny has been arrested and charged with battery. - Original Message - From: Jimmy D. Moore To: Virtual Fly Box ; Fly Fishing World ; Hill Coountry Fly Fishers Sent: Monday, October 13, 2008 7:22 AM Subject: [VFB] Chunking & Winding vs Fly Fishing - Food for thought I wrote this and sent it to the lists in 2002. Just came across it in my VFB file and thought it might be good to revisit it. JIMMY D Too me, the generalization that fly fishers are looked upon as a tweedy, pipe smoking, creel carrying and snobbish angler is completely off base. Many of us fly fishers perceive this to be the way we are viewed by others who prefer to catch their quary by a different means. Sure, some of the bearded "chunking & winding" good ole boy bass hunters in their $30,000 bass boats feel that way about us, but I don't think the average C&W guy is all that different from fly fishers. I have many friends who are among that fishing fraternity, and have found them more "curious" about my fly fishing and how I do it, than looking down their nose at me. Maybe it's because I still own my big bass boat, have a beard, drink a few beers and still chunk and wind on occasion. I've converted more than one "good ole boy" bass fisherman to fly fishing. All it takes is a good size bass on a 4 wt. or a bull bluegill an a 2 wt. Their next question is, "When are you going to take me trout fishing?" Each September I take five close friends, and my three sons, to New Mexico for a week-long trout expedition. Six of them still do a lot of C&W, but the highlight of their fishing year is the NM trip for browns, bows and cutts using little "flea rods" that I built for them. You recon that we fly fishers have been looking down collective noses at the C&W guy.Kind of like the Pheasant hunter looking down his nose at the Coon hunter. ;~)) Two completely different types of hunting, but hunting just the same. How many of you still do some C&W? Awww, comon - fess up! Have A Great Day -- Jimmy D. Moore, "BIGTROUTMAN" I FISH BECAUSE I MUST! [VFB] Re: Your first fly you tied
I guess I was about 10 years old when I saw some flys in a display case at my local sporting goods store in Union City, N.J. So I went home and got some pigeon feathers and some of my mom's blue and red threads and proceeded to make my very first fly. I still have that fly today and I always wanted to be a fly fisherman. My friends and I always used spinning gear and it wasn't until I moved to Phoenix, AZ. and joined a flyfishing club. A San Carlos Apache Indian taught me how to tie. phxflyt...@cox.net A Freudian slip is when you say one thing but mean your mother. - Original Message - From: John C. What was your first fly that you tied? Do you still have it? Do you still tie that same pattern and use it for fishing. My first fly (I'll have to post a picture of it) was a Mickey Finn Streamer w/ Peacock tied over the top. I still have it displayed in a case in our front room. People once and awhile will ask about it. It was the first fly that a beginner fly tying kit instructed me to tie. Some how my "Main Identity" was being used for my "User Name" phxflytyer. When I started "Outlook Express" it used my phxflytyer name to open it up. I went in and made a new "phxflytyer" user name. I had my Rotator Cuff operated on in Dec and have gone thru therapy. I am starting a strengthening program at home now so I should be good. I follow all the posts and am glad that I can take some time and answer some of them now. I have a trip of a life time planned for Alaska in Sept. I have gotten out a bunch of recepie books and will start with the simple ones till I feel comfortable for Salmon flys. One of the books has Don Ordes mouse in it. Don't think I will be trying that one. It is one that my fishing buddy Gordon Mankins brought back from the FFF Conclave of 1995. This brings up a tool bar right above this text typing area that allows different fonts, bold, italics, etc. Way over to the right is a little icon with a mountain and the sun in it. This is the photo insert icon. Make sure your typing pointer is at the space you want to insert the picture and that you know where your photo is in your files. When you click the little icon it will ask you for the photo name or you can hit browse, find it, select it, and open it into the email body. It may be quite large, so use the drag grips to resize the photo to suit the paragraph width. Self-addressed stamped envelops (MANDATORY), toe tags etc (all the normal rules or guidelines) Again for our friends not in the US, send 3-6 extra flys and I will pay the postage back and fill out the custom forms BUT you still need a self-addressed envelope. Also will need your email address so I can make a group list of all the tyers. This will make it easier to keep everyone up to date. HEY!!! you lurkers and newly signed up to the forum - sign up, get your vises dusted off and get to tying. Note: This is a large swap with 36 tyers as this is being marketed on other forums. We have tyers from Germany, Canada as well as the states. See some new tyers skills. This is the reason for the long due date and why I need your personal email address (not forum address). FOUR more tyers needed!! Make the jump and tie some streamers. There will be a total of 36 tyers (NO MORE). Yes a large swap BUT we have until the end of August to complete them and get them to me and you will get 35 in return plus some of my secret mohair chennile. (Tie 3-4 a day take a break tie some other flys and return the next day and tie 3-4 more. that's approx 10 tieing sessions.) EASY!! Any extra flys given will be donated to Casting for Recovery and/or Wounded Warriors (Vets in VA Hospitals recovering from injuries). Think about it and get on board with the BEST swap on the forum!!! It will be fun. My email address: desert-tr...@hotmail.com May your GOD be your fishing partner. [VFB] Re: Catskill Dry fly update
Thanks Nick. I haven't tied since the SowBug in 2004 so I am a little rusty to say the least. I have only tied about 15 dozen flies the past month trying to get some flies tied for my trip to Alaska in Sept. I have been getting better and faster and they are looking better the more I tie. The biggest problem is getting the proportions correct. Peggy's swap is for Catskill Dry Flies. That is a whole nother ball game. Tiny upright wings and heavy hackle really gets you to be exact. I watched a video of Mary Dettes tying and she does not use a bobbin or whip finisher. I plan on using both and a very strong magnifying glass to even see that tiny a hook. I actually have some 28's but I would never think of tying a dry fly on a hook that small. At least not for a couple of more years of tying. Thanks for the encouraging words, and yes I will do my best no matter what kind or size of swap I am in. Thank you, Alan Di Somma Phoenix, Mexico's second largest city Money will buy a fine dog, but only kindness will make him wag his tail. - Original Message - From: Niclas Runarsson To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, July 27, 2009 6:29 AM Subject: [VFB] Re: Catskill Dry fly update Hoping for noone to get disappointed is not real swap thinking, Mr. Di Somma. Let me tell you about some real swap thinking: Right this moment, I'm hosting 'On the Edge To Nothing Swap 2009' at the (Swedish) 'Edge FlyFishing Forum'... size #20 and smaller. And now I have seen some true swap thinking. This has become something I will use as an example in the future, when it's time for the old "A swap isn't a contest. It's all about effort." explanation. As a fly-fishing forum, this one differs a lot from VFB. Most of the talk is about fly-fishing and not really much about tying. Few of the tyers are advanced tyers. I wanted to see how much they really liked to tie tiny flies themselves so I invited them to a swap, but I took it "easy" and set the bar at #20... with a three months tying time (partly to be able to even fill the list). It took me by surprise, to say the least. The list of 12 participants was filled in less than 24 hrs... and most of the guys went out to buy hooks to even be able to participate. (A few of them didn't even know where to find such small hooks when signing up.).Only one of them chose to tie on a #20, as "large" as possible. The rest went down to #24 and smaller. (This #20 tyer later had to drop out... but less than 15 minutes after announcing it a new guy stepped in, coming in with a #28 PT nymph.) One of them bought #22's... as "practice hooks", so the #26's that he also bought wouldn't come as a shock. All this talk about buying hooks" was really nice to see. It was new, but they were ready to try. But it didn't stop with hooks. Two guys had some problems. But instead of dropping out or going for larger hooks, one of them got himself new glasses... and another bought a new vise!!! "Give up??? - No way!!!" LOL This turned out to be more than checking out the midge interest. It also became a check how people felt about swapping... and here it wasn't any "No, I can't do good enough to swap." Here we had some TRUE swap thinking: "I'm not afraid... it's effort that counts.", "It might not be the best... but it sure will be fun." The swap has been going on for two months now and the talk in the thread is the same: "Holy smoke, this was fiddly... but WOW it was fun!", "WHY haven't I tried this before???" etc. Some of these guys are guys who have complimented the midges I've posted earlier and then said things like "I wouldn't be able to tie in the thread on a hook that size" when I've asked "Why not try it yourself?". It really gives me a warm feeling reading through the swap thread (and I have read it more than once... just for the fun of it). When you WANT to give... then you're ready to swap. Same effort from everyone will make noone give less than the other. /Nick -- From: phxflyt...@cox.net To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Subject: [VFB] Re: Catskill Dry fly update Date: Sun, 26 Jul 2009 07:40:39 -0700 Peggy: I should have my tying skills up a little higher then they are now so I would like to try this swap. Some of these guys are guys who have complimented the midges I've posted earlier and then said things like "I wouldn't be able to tie in the thread o

[VFB] Re: tools now Packing Hair.
Years ago, when I first got into fly tying a lot of the guys in the club gave me some ideas. One of them was to take the shaft of an old aluminum arrow that was bent and cut a 6" length and debur the ends. This way you have a lot of surface area to hold in your hand and still have a big enough hole to really pack the hair tight against the last bunch of hair. Now that I have a wood lathe, I can turn one out in just a few minutes, out of exotic wood scraps. Thank you, Alan Di Somma Phoenix, It's Arpaiolicious!" Will send finger nail clippings next time I trim them. LOL Here is how I do it. After spinning the hair, take a couple of thread wraps in front of the spun hair. Put thumb and first finger, finger nails up against the hair with the hook shank between the nails. Now work your hand in a back and forth twisting motion while pushing the hair back against the last bunch. The wraps in front of the hair when pushed back in that motion will hold the hair in place. When you think you have all the hair you can get in the shank, work it back some more and you will find you can almost always get another bunch on. Another thing, I try to use the thinnest thread I can get by with. Most times it is 3/0. Hope this is clearer than mud. Misako and i had a terriffic day today on the White..we started at the dam at 8 a.m. and killed 'em.we were with Chad (from Mt. River fly shop), and hois wife and Bill Thorn the local TU Chapter President. Chad and Bill were catchin' fish on every or every other cast. Misa and i did well too, and Chad's wife got a fair number as well. She did also however, fall in, twice. Then we all went to our house for lunch, Then we moved over to Cotter and Misa and Tiffinay had a casting lesson while we fished a few more hours. If any of us had caught a Brookie, we'da had a grand slam, because we had all, already caught Bows, Browns and Cutts. My total for the day was approximately a couple dozen Bows, two Browns and bout a half dozen Cutts. Chad and Bill both lost count before we ever had lunch. Misa had maybe 20 or so Bows. Numbers matter not to me, but it was such a successful day..the White is stupid good when the water if off. The fish are just stacked up like cord wood. i easily lost 50 fish today for whatever reason or the other. BIG FUN! Some we're virtually at hand but popped off at the last minute. I try my best not to touch any fish if i can get the hook out without doin' so. It was a day none of us will ever forget. When they came over for lunch, they were litterally speechless when i took 'em downstairs for the tour, lmao. Misa's luch was REDICKALUS!..Chicken Breast, Smoked Ham, Salmon, Spinich, Radishes, Cucumber, Tomatoe, Italian Bread, Avacado, Cellery sticks, Potatoe salad, Onion, Olives, OJ, Beer, and bottled water.OH YEAH! I put the foam in a big cardboard box (to catch the overspray). If memory serves me right (happens less frequently these days), I sprayed each piece separately and let them get tacky (3-5 minutes?). Then I put them together carefully. I layed them on a very flat surface and put a book on them overnight. Worked fine. I even did three layers for the Chernobyl ants. [VFB] Tying Videos
http://www.azflyfishing.net/thewall/?cat=5 Check out these two tying videos from john Rohmer of Arizona Fly Fishing. The products he is demoing are also on sale at his website. Just click on the "Home" and follow for the materials. I have most of the colors in the Diamond Braid. It is almost identical to the Simi Seal dubbing but it has been twisted together and forms a braid. I just hate to dub, so I use the braid. The flies turn out the same but I have to "scrub" a little bit more to get the fibers to pull out on the leach. if you want to tie the monnow you will have to use the dubbing. [VFB] Re: Tying Videos
I will try, but just seems like too much work, when there are other ways of doing the same thing. At least that is my take on it. On his tying supplies wall, there are 24 colors of the new Mega Simi Seal. I'm sure John will send them to you if you order them. He can blend any color you want. He has done that for me. If you want I can send you all the colors he has. Just let me know. For years i had to "blend" all my own dubbings (for artistic flies), because right out of the package they were always to "one thing." If you wanted a blended look to them...you hadda blend them...which was time consumming. actually the blending process is fun, but the Arizona is already blended. [VFB] Re: Tying Videos
He really is a great asset to fly fishing. A couple of years ago at one of the Outdoor/Boat/Hunting/Fishing Expo's Charles Meck was there and I bought one of his books. He and John Rohmer wrote the book. I later had John sign the book for me. It seems as though Charles is a "Snow Bird" and comes to Arizona to fish. Some how he and John got together and wrote " Arizona Trout Streams and their Hatches." Glad to see that you are now able to post directly to the list. Biggest rainbow that I got to within 15 ft. of the boat was well over 30". Had at leat 8 or 10 that took the egg and kept running. Never saw them and broke off almost immediately, Had several that I played for a few minutes and broke off. [VFB] Re: Duh, what do you call this thing?
I used to hunt wild fowl and rabbits in the Meadowlands when we used to call it " Secaucus Swamp" There was a pig farm close by and the smell would just about know you over. One of my favorite Cabelas is in Mitchell, South Dakota on I-90 on the way to Montana. Great place to stop and rest for a while..usually after having left that morning from somewhere just inside the Minnasota line comming from maybe somewhere in Ohio the previous morning.i guess those days are over though. Cause i'll prolly never head to Montana from N.Y. anymore. The newest and biggest (to be) Cabelas is being built in the Meadowlands (N.J.) complex, where the N.Y. Giants and N.Y.
