Not to mention plans by major email service providers to charge for commercial email.

I have an email subscribe button on my vlog-- it uses FeedBlitz, which doesn't have attachments.

I am glad, though, to see an attachment option, at least, for RSS
feeds. A month ago when I was looking for one to mention in my book,
all I heard were the crickets chirping. With that option, someone could
subscribe to Mortaine's Moblog (3gp format) with their cell phone's
messaging address and get my moblog... mobile-ly. I was hoping for a
client-side option that would put the bandwidth onus on the subscriber,
but this is also good, at least till vlogdir has to put the kabosh on
its free bandwidth.

Re: [videoblogging] Blogs Need Email

Yep email has a dark side, as we all know. It's important for reputable mailing services to work directly with ISPs that may be blacklisting them. Their are some services that can help by doing periodic checks (test mailings and bounce handling) and alert such a service to problems I use to deal with this a lot when i worked for a company that managed fan club sites and we did hundreds of thousands of mailings a week.. and also offered vanity email services. Headache!
But things are getting better and Gmail and Yahoo seem pretty good at this game lately.I do think that it is more important to have email systems improved more so than having people switch to just RSS readers. Some have tried to mimic email using RSS... which is interesting but i dont know if that can be a logical long-term solution. Maybe... and there are plenty of supporting arguments... but spam can infiltrate anything given time. If most people used RSS and not email, RSS would have more spam than email ;-) And people will always need and use email no matter what.

I'm glad Flip4Mac works for you. From my experience, it causes so many
conflicts with other software programs, it's more trouble than it's
worth.

For instance, it conflicts with iSync. Why on EARTH a video conversion
utility would conflict with iSync is beyond me, but there you have it.
It conflicts with iMovie.

Basically, when I need to convert a windows media file to a mac
format, I think long and hard about whether or not I really need it,
because it's going to be such a PITA to install, use, then uninstall.
As with almost everything, I've discovered that if it's only available
in a Windows platform, I really didn't need it after all.

feedblitz has potential but its much to loud and invasive for my taste. i specifically wanted to offer this subscription option to the vlogosphere and is only intended for videoblogs. having the enclosure/attachment was obviously critical and yes, the cell phone/3gp aspect was a motivating factor.
the enclosure could always hook into a peercasting model too.A month ago when I was looking for one to mention in my book,
all I heard were the crickets chirping.oh well, i've had it on vlogdir for about 2 months... just dont do much promoting except through blog posts.i have posted here in the past in general about RSS--INBOX but i too heard those crickets ;-)

In the spirit of Valentine's day we've added some cool features for

your favorites list so that other people can get updates on what you
like on the site. Check it out at www.youare.tv.

It's been just over a month since we've been live (this group saw us
in our very first days), and we are growing pretty quickly with great
content in the film community. We'd love to get more documentary, new
blog content on the site as well.

And as usual, we'd love to get your feedback.

right on.some company's completely over-complicate unsubscribe function. it's ridiculous. but, thats their fault. when done right, all is well. to unsubscribe to a feed using vlogdirs you simply click a link in the message and a page will tell you that you are unsibscribed... and you will be unsubscribed ;-) if it was a mistake, another click resubscribes you. no logins needed.
email is not broken... in some cases its 'too fixed' and obviously it is also taken advantage of by spammers... but email as a technology is a fine thing. just look at us using this mailing list ;-)RSS and RSS Readers do empower the user to quickly subscribe/unsubscribe without reliance on 3rd party service/database but again, it's up to the service provider to make it just as easy as it is in an RSS Reader. It's about the architecture of a service more than the technology itself.
I certainly would have zero interest in using or offering a service that is complex to sub/unsub.sullOn 2/14/06, Pete Prodoehl

I use email for what it's good for, and I use RSS for what it's goodfor. One more than one occasion I've found it nearly impossible tounsubscribe from a mailing list or email newsletter. I can alwaysunsubscribe to an RSS feed. In this way, RSS puts the user in control,
and that's a good thing. I'm not one of those people who think email isbroken because I use it every day and it works pretty well. Ultimately,I want a choice of either email or RSS (or whatever) as a delivery method.

Well, I can start with: uninstalling flip4mac solved my iSync problem.
Reinstall, and the problem recurs. I'm not making that up.

A fairly basic google search brings up:
http://www.unsanity.org/archives/000425.php
and:
http://www.versiontracker.com/php/feedback/article.php?story=20060112160911793#comments

And the Apple discussion forums mention this issue as well, which is
where I found out about it to fix the problem I was having.

It also, by the way, can break QuickTime export to iPod, which I also
experienced:
http://www.tuaw.com/2006/02/06/flip4mac-breaks-quicktime-export/

It seems to me that video software that breaks things that are related
to it (QT) as well as things that aren't (iSync) is pretty buggy and
broken software.

  It conflicts with iMovie.

Can you be more specific about the conflicts? URLs please?

schlomo, yep, a few people i have seen using it... though its actually feedblitzt and they are partnered with feedburner. like i said, feedblitz has got some good tech but i dislike their look and feel.others have expressed this opinion too so i bet they will wake up and clean up. but its a cool service of course. others are out there... and this year i am sure more and more will pop up.
bottom line is many people are less geek than us and many of these people would like to subscribe to you. we cant expect them all to learn how to use new software and web sites, though many will. The email option, whether just for alerts or to receive the entire content of a post, is a good thing that many are going to appreciate.

Yes, their are subscriber metrics... and a few other interesting features. These are not laid out or easily available to you just yet.Part of why i havent promoted it much because it's not fully rolled out. But the subscriber metrics will be available to you and also feedburner will eventually keep dibs on them as well... just as they do with feedblitz.
Their is also the ... 'people who subscribe to this feed are also subscribed to these feeds' etcetera. i have barely even designed the pages for the web side of the service... just very limited time on my end. i pick away an hour here, 15 mintutes their ;-) day jobs suck!

[videoblogging] SXSW - Who is bringing a camera?

Following the success Flavorpill had with their DivX video coverage of
Sundance, we have had another company approach us to do something
similar for SXSW.

Instead of setting up our own group there, I thought this would be a
great crossover opportunity since so many video bloggers will be there
already.

Anyone here going to SXSW with a camera that might be interested in
collaborating on something like the www.flavorpill.net/sundance event,
email me (jvinson at divxcorp.com).

We still have some details to hammer out, but it could be a fun way to
reach a new audience. If you have any questions, send those along too.

Thanks,

Re: [videoblogging] stickam

2006-02-14 Thread Joshua Kinberg
Now to argue my point from the other side... This may be a great
service for some people. The basic step of putting video on a website
can be solved in a number of ways. This may be a nice widget for doing
just that.

But your question was if this service had any value to videobloggers.
To that question, my answer is no. It has little if any relationship
to videoblogging other than it being a way to embed a clip on my blog
sidebar... that's about it. But as for distrbution of media, I don't
really see it there. If I have to come to your website to watch it,
then it ain't really distributing.

   http://www.stickam.com/stickam.jsp

In adition to hosting, they have a live streaming (flash) scheme
   where
you throw an object in your sidebar and broadcast live.

Is there any value for a vlogger to use their service?

[videoblogging] Re: SXSW - Who is bringing a camera?

2006-02-14 Thread Bill Streeter
I had seriously thought about attending this year, but it really
comes down to a choice between this and Vloggercon. So I'll choose
Vloggercon. I had entered (mostly on a lark) my vlog in the
interactive competition at SXSW but I didn't place (no surprise)
but they didn't really even have a video blog category, so I dunno
what I was thinking anyway.

[videoblogging] Re: SXSW - Who is bringing a camera?

2006-02-14 Thread JV
Absolutely.

I am still working out the details of what we are looking at. I should
have it all hammered out Thursday.

Anything we would come up with would be very open. There may also be
opportunities for collaboration with non-vloging media. It is
admitedly a trade-off. There would be editorial input from the
partner, but they would also help with access both to events or
interviews, but also to a new audience.

I also want to make sure that we aren't superceding or competing
directly with existing efforts, but growing the reach as a whole.

I'm here for feedback and to take ideas.

Thanks,

Jim V

To that question, my answer is no. It has little if any relationship
to videoblogging other than it being a way to embed a clip on my blog

Put it this way, why don't I post every text blog entry as a read-only
PDF *and* disallow anyone to download that document. That doesn't
 really help people distribute media.

Re: [videoblogging] Blogs Need Email

On Feb 14, 2006, at 10:05 AM, Michael Sullivan wrote: TechCrunch has posted "Blogs Need Email" I have talked this up as well since I am a big believer in RSS forwarding to email. For the past year or so, i have kept interest in the topic and eventually decided to offer the service for the videoblogging community through vlogdir.com.Here is a screengrab of todays rboom in my inbox.http://vlogdir.com/vlogdir_emailsubscribe_rboom.gif The link to the RSS item enclosure is included too ;-)I plan to vamp up the service and provide a description/help page as soon as i move to new server this month but feel free to try it out. The service runs off my dreamhost server using vastmachine.com, just to avoid confusion.Content creators can also add an email subscribe option on your blogs.I love how currently, we have FireAnt (that is better than iTunes) for download subscription handling, mefeedia for web based subscription management and vlogdir offers email subscription handling.  I think we got things covered in the subscription department ;-)  Sull, I really dig it.My question is how does it work with comment feeds? I've had a particular problem keeping up with the massive amounts of comments on things like evilvlog... because of course RSS is completely unthreaded so comment feeds lack ANY contextual information without going back to the blog and reading from there. My interest would be in if your service or others can put these emails in a format where they can thread in an email client like gmail.com or mail.app? For example, Ideally I'd ABSOLUTELY love to be able to subscribe to evilvlog's primary RSS feed in your service and secondarily it's comments feed and have the entire threaded conversation including original blog posts reconstructed in my mail.app and gmail.com so that the original post was first and then the comments cascaded off of it in chronological order.  This way I could completely follow the conversation in my gmail or mail.app. A huge benifit over following in a blog.In my opinion this would take the best of what a mailing list has to offer and a blog and combine them together into a media rich video/audio communications structure. It would be a new radically fluid, open and media rich communications medium.Though, I'll settle for just the comments feed being threaded in email for now. :)BTW, there are two other services I've been looking at who offer to port RSS data to email.http://www.rssfwd.com/http://www.r-mail.org/I think this is going to become an increasingly hot topic... among other things it offers a mechanism by which you can get RSS on your cell phone or PDA..  because not all such devices have RSS readers yet. But of course it's more than that.  Blogs have many things email doesn't have, primarily public visibility and transparency. However email does have some things such as threading and their "conversational fluidity" that blogs don't have.-Mikemmeiser.com/blogmefeedia.comsull- - - - Sullhttp://vlogdir.com

Re: [videoblogging] stickam

2006-02-14 Thread robert a/k/a r
It's interesting. I find the experience of viewing a video within the
original blog entry more satisfying than moving that video into an
off-line state divorced from the host. When you break the vlog like
that you're unable to comment, you have disconnected the media.

You can argue all you want about distribution meaning put it on a
disconnected device but I call bullsh*t. It's completely valid to use
flv for distribution, in fact I'd argue it's more valid since it forces
the media to remain connected to the source.

Now you know I've tried Fireant on mac (and sent a donation:) from
early on and support your company's goal, however I think we all need
to encourage others to participate and develop tools, not dismiss their
efforts so quickly. I'm not using Fireant any longer, the experience is
not producing any gain for me. That said, I'm not against it and might
come around to using it again at some point, but vlogs feels
disconnected there. It looks like a good tool for transferring media to
portable devices, but when that happens the vloggyness is no more.
Please don't take this as a dis to Fireant, it isn't.

Just my $0.02 today. Let's encourage participation, let's be
constructive when we see TOS items we would like to have a conversation
about, let's be open to flv and connected vlogging, let's think about
the social opportunities for vlogging. That's why I'm always asking
questions and interested in hearing about new services.

[videoblogging] NetVidTheory

2006-02-14 Thread Enric
I've opened up a new yahoo group to work out abstractions for video on
the net, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/netvidtheory/ . If this is an
area of discussion you're interested in furthering, please feel free
to join. The membership is public.

I see forming accurate concepts and abstractions on net media as
important to further it and recognize this is not the appropriate
venue for that conversation. The intent of NetVidTheory is for ideas
to compete and win based on rational soundness and evidence. It is
not for personalizing concepts.

It is not my intent to compete or disparge the VlogTheory discussion
group. But to offer other methods of investigating the nature of net
media.

Richard, though I may be putting words in everyone else's mouth, if you came

Actually, I think they need to add it to the SXSW schedule.

[videoblogging] Public Access TV and Videoblogging

2006-02-14 Thread Jay dedman
After 2 years of pushing and pleading, my Community TV station has
finally embraced videoblogging:
http://mnn.org/vlog.html
I encourage anyone in NYC to come.
Free classes will begin in March.

Public Access TV and videoblogging are a perfect match for me.
Here in Manhattan, we have a public space with great, free equipment.
we also have a place to center organizing and advocacy.

I have started a group for public access workers and producers to
discuss reinvigorating Community TV with what we've been doing in this
group.

I encourage anyone interested in this area to help me push
videoblogging into Public Access TV.

Re: [videoblogging] stickam

2006-02-14 Thread Joshua Kinberg
I'm open to FLV... that's not what is being discussed here. Does
Stickam distribute the FLV files? It doesn't look like it does...

FireAnt is still the only aggregator around that supports playback of
FLV (not many people choose to implement FLash in such a distributable
way though... usually Flash is used to lock content onto the page
instead of letting it flow and become distributed).

FireAnt also supports direct links back to the blog source for
commenting and keeps all the RSS information in tact (unlike iTunes),
so I don't really get your comments there about disjointedness.

Like I said, different tools support different user behaviors. FireAnt
is a great tool for consuming lots of video from distributed sources.
I'm not just saying that because I'm one of the creators. I'm saying
that because its not uncommon for our users to be subscribed to 50-100
different video feeds.

Hey, diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks... your question had to do
with whether Stickam had value to videoblogging, i still don't believe
it does. For other applications, maybe so.

[videoblogging] New to the community!

2006-02-14 Thread Nuno Teixeira
Hey everyone, I just wanted to drop a note saying hi. And call me
maniac, but I just THOUGHT of checking yahoo today for a group on
vlogging... I know, I know, pretty sad. I beat myself up enough
already :).

I started getting all pumped about the movement back in September
and haven't regretted it since. Me and a friend started a website
two months later called Webtertainment.tv. We have a bunch of ideas
for it and have had a lot of fun so far. FireANT was an awesome
discovery back in the day too and XOLO and MobuzzTV were the first
vlogs I remember getting hooked on... then of course, Rocketboom.

Since then my subscription list is almost unmanageable... I just
didn't have the time to keep up with everything...

Then I got the new 60 gig iPod... Joy. Many I can't leave home
without it and I've actually gone as far as let other people drive
my car one long drives so that I could catch up on the backlog of
shows.

Then... because I HAD the iPod I started looking for MORE
podcasts... and in a total of four days, FOUR DAYS, I've managed to
exponentially make my daily intake of vlogs require more of my
attention.

This is almost as bad as when I got into World of Warcraft for four
months... long story, and all I have to say is I WON'T go back...
it's just too pretty in there for an artist to not want to ignore
real life over.

Anyhow, that's my rant and introduction. I'm glad to be here and
look forward to what I've already gathered is an active and healthy
community. With that, I'd like to leave you all with the shows my
team and I are working on. Our main show is called The Lowdown
and is an information dump show about a specific topic each time.
The second show is called The One Minute Show where we constrain
ourselves to one minute creativity windows and get out any random
ideas that come to mind that we think would be entertaining... at
least to some... or at least just us... sometimes... :)

Re: [videoblogging] stickam

2006-02-14 Thread Deirdre Straughan

I think that, once again, we're splitting hairs. If you ask is this useful to the videoblogging community, when some people definte videoblogging as (roughly) having all the features of a blog AND including video, then perhaps Stickam is not useful.
But I suspect that the average citizen (outside this group) who is interested in distributing video online may not care about RSS, portable devices, etc., but is simply looking for a way to share video online with a fairly small group of people,
e.g. video of the new baby going to the grandparents, at least as a first step.If you want to get people videoblogging, perhaps something like Stickam is a good place to start, before you scare them off with the alphabet soup of terminology. When/if they get interested in a wider audience, they'll be back to learn about all the bells and whistles. And they're not stuck with Stickam if they don't want to be.
I did note that Stickam has a nicely designed interface which is easy to use and explains what it wants. My only problem is that it failed to actually upload and process my video, and did not tell me why.

[videoblogging] Re: Public Access TV and Videoblogging

2006-02-14 Thread davecircumnavigator
I got started in video in a Public Access class given by Jay last
fall. I used Public Access equipment to produce my first videos. I
love the fact that Jay is pushing Community TV to embrace video
blogs. It could lead to very interesting times and innovations.
How, exactly, will the video blogger leverage Community TV and vice-
versa? What will that look and how will it be used? I can say for
myself, that having started with MNN classes, I will soon deliver
programming to them that I owe them. With 20+ 3 minute daily
videos on my website, I'm now in a position to cut two 1/2 hour
specials to air on the Community TV station that got me started.
What that does for me is to potentially get my programming in front
of new audiences (potentially 600,000 hhlds in Manhattan). For the
TV station, it gives them more diverse programming about the people
and things happening in the community they serve. Great stuff. I'm
not sure that marries the two mediums to best effect, but it's a
start. I'm eager to see what happens.

[videoblogging] Pricing Media (difficult question)

2006-02-14 Thread robert a/k/a r
Heh. Regarding distribution of media this is interesting.

We know how auctions work, right. Well, AMC is predicting it's coming
to movies (link is to NYT article) at the theatre.

http://snipurl.com/mkkt

Rocketboom's success in collecting USD 40k for a weeks worth (as I
recall, that the correct figure/duration?) of adverts at the end of
each episode is another good example of how efficient the market is
becoming. I'm using RB here only because it's the most visible pricing
in recent history, of course we're talking about any media production.

We live in interesting times. These are old models being applied today.
Why? It's the Internet, it's like why male dogs do what they do.

Media Distribution + Pricing Mechanism = Web 2.0 (well, part of it
anyway)

Obviously such variable pricing works because the number of seats in
the theatre is limited and they have a half life. It's not dissimilar
to the freshness of vegetables on the shelf at the grocer which expire
or the freshness of media. If a seat in the theatre goes unsold it's
not recoverable. If a bunch of carrots go unsold they are not
recoverable.

What happens to the price for a show on the Internet once it is no
longer fresh, can it still be sold as new? Can a secondary market
develop and, if so, how will it work?
