[videoblogging] prevloggercon meetup June 7, 7PM in NYC w/special guest kitykity!

2006-05-30 Thread jonny goldstein

NYC area vloggers:

Susan Kirkpatrick is going to be in down from Texas before Vloggercon,
so we're getting together at Rudy's Bar and Grill at 7PM on Weds in
the beer garden in the back.

And you are invited! If you can't make it to Vloggercon, this is a
great chance to hang out w/your fellow vloggers, and if you are going
to Vloggercon, this is a great chance to get the party started early!
Either way, I'm psyched to hang out w/Susan, one of the most prolific
and active vloggers out there.

Come on down!

Rudy's is at:

Rudy's Bar and Grill
627 9th Ave
Between 44th and 45th streets
Look for the giant pink pig out front

just a few donations short of his target. I've just donated and I

come on Brent! thanks casey!

please help out if you can folks

if someone is planning to cab it from the airport, please consider
donating all but $5 of that to Brent instead and take the subway (it's
so much more fun - from oakland you actually go under the bay! - BART
trains are fast and clean (hell, even carpeted) - far better than a
cab).

[videoblogging] Engadget Upset At E3 Video Appearance

2006-05-30 Thread LeanBackVids.com

This is slightly (a few days) old, but it is a good story...

Andru Edwards, Gear Live's Editor in Chief writes Over the past day
or so, I have been putting a little too much time into dealing with an
issue brought to me by Engadget's Managing Editor, Ryan Block. Let me
first say that in my previous dealings with Ryan, he seems to be a
good guy. I don't have a deep-seeded hatred for Weblogs, Inc.,
Engadget, or any of their staff. However, yesterday put a different
spin on how I view these guys.

2006-05-30 Thread Laura Moncur

I looked at the wiki for the events. It would be really helpful to the
people from out of town if the addresses for the events were included.
For example, I have NO idea where the Apple store is. According to the
rumors in SLC, there is an Apple store on every corner in San
Francisco just like the churches here.

Are we supposed to call the names of the people on the wiki to RSVP?
Should there be an RSVP thing on the wiki?

Thanks...

Jay- Will there be a way to get on the Saturday night guest list at

when you're not sure if there's something else going on... is that the

It seems to crash often, with a buffer overflow problem.

How do you Windows people work with QuickTime files?

Are we supposed to call the names of the people on the wiki to RSVP?
Should there be an RSVP thing on the wiki?

[videoblogging] How often should I post new videos?

2006-05-30 Thread greg

Hi.
I have just started my vlog last month, and have posted around 7 videos so far.
I have a few more "Waiting in the wings". (actually, they are starting to stack up)
How often do people post vlogs? Is it daily, once a week, a couple of times a week? I have not been in the community long enough to figure this out yet by following the RSS feeds.
I have been checking out my "visitors" via sitemeter, but I don't seem to have that many.
I don't want to post videos faster than they get viewed, but if I have no viewers, should I still post videos?
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Greg.

[videoblogging] Idea: New microformat: rel=media:thumbnail

2006-05-30 Thread David Meade

an idea just hit me out of the blue ... it may be stupid, or it may be already done, but I figured this group could let me know on either ...You know how we have rel=enclosure for links in a post that should be enclosed in a feed ...
how about a new micro-format for rel=media:thumbnailrel=media:thumbnail could be added to an image in a post so that this image could be included as the still image for the MRSS extension.services like blip which cross post to your blog could include the rel=media:thumbnail automatically and feedburner could then insert that image into your MRSS info (feedburner already inserts some MRSS in there).
I've got a few cool ideas in the back of my head on ways to consume a feed, but a few of them would work far better if I KNEW what image the blogger wanted to use to represent thier video/audio file. This sort of solution would allow for a much broader adoption of the media:thumbnail element in RSS.

Re: [videoblogging] Idea: New microformat: rel=media:thumbnail

2006-05-30 Thread Andreas Haugstrup

It is unnecessary. I have never met a blogger who have put up a thumbnail
and then not used it as a link to the video. All you need is
rel=enclosure - if that link points to a video resource then you can
safely assume that the first image contained in the link is the thumbnail.

e.g. a href="" rel=enclosureimg src="" //a

Re: [videoblogging] How often should I post new videos?

2006-05-30 Thread wlight

I have just started my vlog last month, and have posted around 7
 videos so far.

Wow. And here I am with three in one month and feeling pretty good! :)

How often do people post vlogs? Is it daily, once a week, a couple
of times a week? I have not been in the community long enough to figure
this out yet by following the RSS feeds.

There is no major rule. It seems people post to their vlogs when they
have something they feel like posting. I was pulling a post a week for a
while, but the last post faced both technical challenges and challenges to
my skills, and it's been six weeks in the making at this point.

I have been checking out my visitors via sitemeter, but I don't
 seem to have that many.

Well, the only way to improve that is to get out on more directories and
syndication systems.

I don't want to post videos faster than they get viewed, but if I
have no viewers, should I still post videos?

Making them is always good practice, and if you are feeling good about
making them, then keep making them.

I haven't checked my site statistics in weeks, either.

Re: [videoblogging] How often should I post new videos?

2006-05-30 Thread David Meade

This varies a great deal from vlogger to vlogger. There's no rule except do what feels right for you. Some post daily, some once a week, some every other month. :-) I myself aim for 2-4 vlogs a month ... and if I go over great! If I were doing some sort of 'show' (themed or episode based content) then I might personally want to make it a more predictable and frequent publishing schedule, but for my lil' personal video blog I've decided (for me) one video every few weeks is ok. (although I do get a nice warm fuzzy feeling when I post video more often than that).

Yes but I'm talking about feed here not a post.Imagine a blog a post lists 3 or 4 different formats. If the enclosure in the feed is QuickTime, but the default link on the post points to WMV or Flash ... a link to the Quicktime file might not have an image within the href tag.
There are all sorts of times when an enclosure in a feed cant definatively be tied to a particular image file in the body. the rel=enclosure is not always the default link in the body.

some people post everyday, some a few times a week, others a few times
a month if that. I started hot and heavy with a post almost everyday,
but that's tough to keep up (we had so many technical difficulties it
wasn't funny, ok mildly funny)I have been checking out my visitors via sitemeter, but I don't
seem to have that many.
I don't want to post videos faster than they get viewed, but if I have no viewers, should I still post videos? For sure, 'post them and they will come view'at least some will :)
Everybody videoblogs for their own reasons. Some for fame, some for speaking their mind, some for connections and conversations, others for experimentation with the video/'net medium...and some for all of the above. In my opinion, you should always be doing it for yourself, then you'll never have to worry about satisfying someone, 'cause at least you will be satisfied.
Chances are pretty good that someone else will find what you are posting interesting and will come watch.I find that interacting with other videobloggers is a great way to get your site seen a bit. Interacting with this list a great start. going to other videoblogs and watching, commenting, interacting, maybe even collaborating will help to let others know that you are around and you may see your stats grow.
Just my two cents...I don't have that many viewers either and I've been doing it for a year now :) But I have come to think of the viewers that I do have as my friends (interacting with them through comments, conversations, etc.) and wouldn't trade those 20-30 people for a 100 more.
Anyway, enjoy and welcome :)Any thoughts?

Re: [videoblogging] How often should I post new videos?

2006-05-30 Thread Markus Sandy

hey greg

interesting question and i imagine that you will get lots of
interesting responses

many people may say that you have to post regularly and often.

as a "viewer". i disagree.

in fact, i never delete feeds from fireant or itunes because of a lack
of posting

truth is: i'm more likely to delete a feed right after watching a post
than at any other time

of course it all depends what you are looking for

there is much more to vlogging than just the numbers

you should be aware however that there is some funky stuff going on
with itunes where it stops pulling a feed if "you" (the viewer) don't
keep up with it and this of course can affect your (the publisher)
numbers.

another point: your feeds could be easier to work with. i love that
you have a mefeedia feed, but it would be great if you had an mRSS feed
that was easily accessible (i.e., a feedburner or similar rich media
feed) for us itunes and fireant users. the tiny little atom feed (no
offense) does not help most of us here and is hard to find on your
page. i recommend that you at least burn a feed at feedburner and put
the link prominently on your page. itunes buttons are also nice.

see freevlog.org for more info on feedburner (is it still step 6 these
days? lots of great additions lately and it's so hard to keep up with
that electric verdi - he's always doing something new).
congrats on your new vlog and not buying gas for 7 months - would love
to see that car sometime

are you coming to vloggercon?

also in California

Markus

Jay- Will there be a way to get on the Saturday night guest list at
the last minute or do we have to RSVP now? It's kind of hard to RSVP
when you're not sure if there's something else going on... is that the
 ONLY thing?

for all thes events, its fairly loose.
we just like to know if we should expect 20 or 100 people.
its all good.
just come to SF and wear flowers in your hair.

[videoblogging] Re: Blogger timeline tips needed - solution Grokker

2006-05-30 Thread bordercollieaustralianshepherd

This is something I was trying to figure out myself once. Some time
back I found this grokker.com a great graphcal SE and think that this
is the ticket.

So for example I entered your domain:
http://tinyurl.com/o38sn and can view results in a list. Your site is
among the results. You should see a tab for map view. Here you will
click the graphical refrence to your site. It too expands as it drills
down. This is what I think could solve navigating the archives on your
site. For my purposes, I realized I would need to have a way to attach
keywords to the clips. I envisioned all clips in a kind of internet
snow bubble. The snowflakes (video clips) are seperate but form the
whole = the clips are days from my life. Or another annaolgy my clips
are like flakes of dandruff on my head.

Some content is rleated to other clip's content; friends, location,
time of year, occassion.

I thought and still think that this would be the best way to display a
immersive video experience so that the visitor is exploring rather
then following.

a class=video href="">In the next version, it allows for more semantics, so that you can add thumbnails (as well as width, height, etc), like...
span class=video a class=video:href href=""> img class=video:thumbnail src=""
/ (span class=video:width640/spanxspan class=video:height480/span) /a/spanAfter that, I'm adding the ability to specify alternatives (of the same thing... like if you were to offer a video in mutliple formats or different resolutions, etc). And being able specify a series (where the show is made up of a series of videos,... for example, part 1 or 3, part 2 or 3, part 3 or 3.)

Re: [videoblogging] Idea: New microformat: rel=media:thumbnail

2006-05-30 Thread Charles Iliya Krempeaux

Hello Andreas,Although rel-enclosure is enough to tell you it is an enclosure (for all or part of the document it is contained within) is NOT enough to tell you that what it points to is a video. To do that you'd could use the a type attribute, as in...
a href="" type=video/mpeg.../aHowever, that is NOT even enough. Consider this example
a href="" type=application/ogg.../aIn this case you don't know if the Ogg file contains video, audio, text, or what? (Ogg, like QuickTime, Matroska, 3GPP, ASF, and others, is a container format that you can put all sort of different types of things into it. And not just video. Thus, another means of semantics is needed. With a _javascript_ thing I have been using I use class-video to mark a video. For example...a
class=video href="" type=application/ogg.../a(Note, rel-video would be wrong. In this case class-video is appropriate. If you would like me to elaborate on that let me know.)

Re: [videoblogging] Idea: New microformat: rel=media:thumbnail

2006-05-30 Thread Joshua Kinberg

It is unnecessary. I have never met a blogger who have put up a thumbnail
and then not used it as a link to the video. All you need is
rel=enclosure - if that link points to a video resource then you can
safely assume that the first image contained in the link is the thumbnail.

 e.g. a href="" rel=enclosureimg src="" //a

I only wish people were so consistent and reliable. Truth is that
there is vast inconsistency in the wild.

Many people use text links to point to videos, sometimes they use
special play button icons to link to videos (not exactly a
thumbnail). Sometimes people link to an HTML page with the media
embedded and somtimes they just embed the media and do not use an
image to link to it. In practice relEnclosure is rarely, if ever used.

We run into all sorts of problems like this trying to parse HTML
descriptions when we aggregate feeds on FireAnt.tv.

I don't think adding additional semantic HTML attributes would help
much either. Often the bloggers who post with strange HTML conventions
aren't the type of people who know much about HTML. I certainly
wouldn't expect them to grok a Microformat like rel=media:thumbnail
... but then perhaps broad acceptance is not really the goal of this
proposal anyway.

comfortable using the fundable deal, it adds a level of
assurance. Also, with fundable, you have to meet your goal before
the funds are distributed, so a direct donation wouldn't actually help
my particular cause anyway.

And on that note - I only need three more contributions! Thank you all

I am (was?) planning on demonstrating/announcing a system I've been
working on at Vloggercon. A few people on the list have helped me
test it, so I might as well seek out a few others...

One really cool feature is that any comments made will follow your
videos, even when viewed in an aggregator. I'll let the testers
discover some of the others (gotta leave something for the demo!).
The requirements to enable your video are that you're using OS X
and distributing QuickTime files.

So, if you're interested in allowing people to video comment your
videos, please contact me.

[videoblogging] Our first real documentary

2006-05-30 Thread J. Rhett Aultman

Well, our first real documentary post was finished today. Boy, did I
ever learn more than I wanted to about managing large amounts of
footage, working interviews together into something coherent, etc, etc.
I learned all of it the hard way this time, so hopefully that'll never
happen again.

Thanks for the help in getting the size down. I didn't have the
personal wherewithal to play with 3vix this time around, but I was able
to get the vid down under 120 MB, which is good given how many scene
cuts there are, which probably drove up the number of keyframes and whatnot.

I don't pimp out the vlog very often, but this is a step forward in our
production, so I'll do it this time.

Hello Joshua,I think that for most vloggers, they won't bother adding semantic HTML (like rel-enclosure, class-video, or anything) unless they get something else out of it. (Or unless it comes out of some tool.)
I've been working on a _javascript_ thing that creates a little DHTML player if you use class-video. For example...a class=video href="" type=application/ogg.../a
So, people who would use my _javascript_ thing would be incentivized to add a class-video so that the DHTML player works. (That of course would have the added advantage of letting other software understand what is and isn't a video.)
But that assumes the vlogger has the skills to do the HTML coding (to add the semantic HTML and bring in the _javascript_ thing).Alternatively, the tools vloggers use to create posts could automagically produce the appropriate semantic HTML.

I think that for most vloggers, they won't bother adding semantic HTML (like rel-enclosure, class-video, or anything) unless they get something else out of it. (Or unless it comes out of some tool.)

Absolutely! Its very important to show that you can *do* stuff with
semantics. That's why we support the image thumbnail format on
FireAnt.tv the way that Andreas described it with the hopes of
encouraging people to post images of their videos...

However, its still early days, and I think the tools for supporting
such standards are still very new. Witness the recent issues with
Technorati tags during Videoblogging Week. Even though its a
standard there still seems to be much chaos and
non-interoperability.

That's not to say that these things won't grow into something more
tangible in the future... I certainly hope so, that's why I'm doing
these things.

I've been working on a _javascript_ thing that creates a little DHTML player if you use class-video. For example...

 a class=video href="" type=application/ogg.../a

Why not go with the existing Microformat, rel=enclosure ?

[videoblogging] Re: How often should I post new videos?

2006-05-30 Thread greg

Hi Markus. Thanks for the tip on the buttons, that is good stuff. So in response, I have decided to make it "video blog week" this week on my blog and try to catch up and post all my footage.I am glad you thought my car was cool, so to kick off the week, I have posted a vlog about my Veggie Car.This however brings up an interesting point... How much text description do you post with your video blog post? People want to view the video, but some background info is good too.I have posted the video with minimum description text, and I have "announced" my Video Blog Week on my regular blog (the regular blog gets more traffic)You can see the video blog here And view my regular blog here As far as Vloggercon... I have not decided yet.Thanks.Greg.--- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Markus Sandy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: hey greg interesting question and i imagine that you will get lots of interesting responses many people may say that you have to post regularly and often. as a "viewer". i disagree. in fact, i never delete feeds from fireant or itunes because of a lack of posting truth is: i'm more likely to delete a feed right after watching a post than at any other time of course it all depends what you are looking for there is much more to vlogging than just the numbers you should be aware however that there is some funky stuff going on with itunes where it stops pulling a feed if "you" (the viewer) don't keep up with it and this of course can affect your (the publisher) numbers. another point: your feeds could be easier to work with. i love that you have a mefeedia feed, but it would be great if you had an mRSS feed that was easily accessible (i.e., a feedburner or similar rich media feed) for us itunes and fireant users. the tiny little atom feed (no offense) does not help most of us here and is hard to find on your page. i recommend that you at least burn a feed at feedburner and put the link prominently on your page. itunes buttons are also nice. see freevlog.org for more info on feedburner (is it still step 6 these days? lots of great additions lately and it's so hard to keep up with that electric verdi - he's always doing something new). congrats on your new vlog and not buying gas for 7 months - would love to see that car sometime are you coming to vloggercon? also in California Markus greg wrote: Hi. I have not been in the community long enough to figure this out yet by following the RSS feeds. I have been checking out my "visitors" via sitemeter, but I don't seem to have that many. Re: [videoblogging] Idea: New microformat: rel=media:thumbnail

2006-05-30 Thread Joshua Kinberg

From: http://microformats.org/wiki/rel-enclosure
-
By adding rel=enclosure to a hyperlink, a page indicates that the
destination of that hyperlink is intended to be downloaded and cached.
E.g. with the following hyperlink:

a href="" href="http://homepage.mac.com/kevinmarks/wwdc2005.mov">http://homepage.mac.com/kevinmarks/wwdc2005.mov
rel=enclosureWWDC 2005 Keynote with chapters/a

the author indicates that the movie should be downloaded.
-

Doesn't matter whether the link points to a video or a PDF (should
it?). The type can be specified with the type attribute, or using
correct Mime-types on the server (preferred).

I would stick with established Microformat class attributes rather
than create new ones and thus more deviation and noise.

Seems like application/ogg is quite a fringe case (not even sure if
its generally playable in the browser, unless you are playing it with
a VLC browser plugin... which is also pretty rare).

You could probably modify your _javascript_ to filter based on accepted
list of type attributes including video/* and application/ogg and
perhaps a handful of other embeddable video formats that use
application/*... not sure what those might be?

Thanks, Josh! I'm doing the animations in Poser, using pre-made,
customized pre-made models, and original models. The original models
are made in Lightwave. I did not know of the 3dwarehouse... looks
very promising so far. Thanks for the tip. I usually prowl around
http://renderosity.com/ and http://daz3d.com/ when shopping for
pre-made models.

I agree, Casey. Pre-mades are the only way to go when time is a
concern.

I've been using live footage with the animations at times, which
usually speeds things up a bit, but mostly I use the live footage for
reasons other than speed.

At this point I am only posting about once every 2 weeks.

About the amount of text in a video blog. Some folks say there
shouldn't be any. Others give a brief introduction.

Me - I yammer on and give paragraphs. I like to create an place where
the context of the video is understood. I have a story to tell that is
sometimes related to the video but often I give my feelings and
opinions about a topic that is a part of the experience.

I'm long winded. I can't help it. I've tried.

So there you have it. I saw your blog and it seemed to be the right

the author indicates that the movie should be downloaded.-Doesn't matter whether the link points to a video or a PDF (shouldit?). The type can be specified with the type attribute, or using
correct Mime-types on the server (preferred).Like I mentioned before (and as you mention later), a MIME type is NOT always sufficient to tell if something is a video or not. This is because not all videos have a MIME type of the form video/*.
One example is Ogg (application/ogg). Although container formats in general will have this problem. (Some container formats have video/* forms though.)Also, systems that shunt themselves via the web will also have this problem. For example, consider this BitTorrent link...
http://example.com/show.torrentIt's MIME type is application/x-bittorrent. Now let's say it contains one video:
video.mpegNow consider this URI that refers to a video coming from a torrent...http://example.com/show.torrent#video.mpeg
Note that I'm using a URI fragment to access what's inside the torrent.I think that this type of thing will continue. Also, given that we are trying to put semantics in the HTML it would suggest to me that keeping a list of non- video/* video MIME types is antithetical to the goals here. Having such a list takes the semantics out of the HTML.
I would stick with established Microformat class attributes ratherthan create new ones and thus more deviation and noise.
Which Microformat class attributes would you suggest?
Seems like application/ogg is quite a fringe case (not even sure ifits generally playable in the browser, unless you are playing it witha VLC browser plugin... which is also pretty rare).
I've found that VLC is actually pretty common. (At least in BC, Canada. Everyone seems to use it here. Things may be different globally though.)But I think the whole topic of videos having MIME types NOT of the form video/* is an important one to deal with. (Shunting things via new protocols seems to be out of favor due to the nature of the underlying operating systems. Instead, shunting seems to be done via MIME types now. And this will lead to new non- video/* video MIME types.)
You could probably modify your _javascript_ to filter based on acceptedlist of type attributes including video/* and application/ogg and
perhaps a handful of other embeddable video formats that useapplication/*... not sure what those might be?My motivation for class-video is to
learn fromSMIL. SMIL has a video element. Thus class-video copies that. (This is the Microformat process. Either observe what being done in the wild with HTML and create a
semantic HTML specification -- a Microformat -- for it. Or mimic XML paradigms out there. In this case I'm mimicking the XML paradign of SMIL.)See ya

I think that for most vloggers, they won't bother adding semantic HTML (like rel-enclosure, class-video, or anything) unless they get something else out of it.(Or unless it comes out of some tool.)
Absolutely! Its very important to show that you can *do* stuff with semantics. That's why we support the image thumbnail format on FireAnt.tv the way that Andreas described it with the hopes of
encouraging people to post images of their videos... However, its still early days, and I think the tools for supporting such standards are still very new. Witness the recent issues with
Technorati tags during Videoblogging Week. Even though its a standard there still seems to be much chaos and non-interoperability. That's not to say that these things won't grow into something more
tangible in the future... I certainly hope so, that's why I'm doing these things.I've been working on a _javascript_ thing that creates a little DHTML player if you use class-video.For example...
   a class=video href="" type=application/ogg.../a Why not go with the existing Microformat, rel=enclosure ?
As far as I can tell, rel-enclosure conveys a totally different meaning than class-video. rel-enclosure essentially says the thing, at the end of this link, is attached to this
