[videoblogging] Seasons Greetings
Last year at this time we had nothing, buying a $6 ski mask was a big purchase. We didn't have any real connections in Hollywood, and we didn't know anyone in Silicon Valley. Videoblogging (or whatever you choose to call it) changed all of that. This has been the best year of my life (Douglas is still holding out the year he discovered sex as his best year :)). The technology of video sharing has allowed us to find a voice and an audience that would not have been possible two or three years ago. More importantly, we've met so many wonderful people and learned so much from all of them. Thanks for a great 2006 and to even better 2007. :) We still have a couple of episodes to release, one should be coming this week. ps-I'm starting a side project golf blog at a href=http://bucketaday.com;http://bucketaday.com/a, it's just a silly way for me to start golfing and writing more. Yeah, Bill - a bit off-topic - but the Verizon installation tech must have said, They're rolling out FIOS TV next month, so we're all jumping around like crazy, learning... at least half a dozen times. Verizon sent me a FedEx announcement of the fiber optic rollout. They're creaming in their jeans over fiber optic delivery systems because that means TV for the computer masses who've drifted away from the boob tube. Do you think watching television on a computer will solve the masses' problem with television? Jan P.S. [videoblogging] Perez Hilton Lawsuit
Blogging is a little ahead of us video folks in terms of maturity of the platforms and ways to make money. It's also ahead of us in terms of litigation. http://tinyurl.com/yd7fam This sort of litigation will come to video blogs, especially ones that use unlicensed photos or video from the various agencies. It's a blurry line between a video blogger and a production company that can be sued and is liable. I know we're straddling that divide right now. We just got production insurance! Anyway, food for thought.

Here's another reason in my book why site-specific video sites are not the most healthy or sustainable. A authoritarian govt can just block the site. Michael, Thanks for the explanation, I watched (some) of the flashmeeting after it was over and wondered why you would convert such small files to big ones. Your explanation is good. Chris brought up a good point though, archival is important; how do you archive and manage your clips from the xacti? So in iMovie if you create a new DV project (this is the default) and then you drag clips into iMovie you'll notice that iMovie has to import them. Re: [videoblogging] converting from mpeg4 to dv
Here's what I do: I use iPhoto to store all the clips and photos from my xacti. It tells me how much space my library takes up. So I can keep selecting some film rolls until they add up to about 4GB and then I burn them to DVD right in iPhoto. I also export a full DV copy of my edited videos from Final Cut Pro. I do this for two reasons - 1. Final Cut Pro's export with Quicktime conversion sucks because it never remembers your settings so I compress the full DV clip with QuickTime Pro (it remembers your settings). 2. I store all of those full DV clips in a folder until I've got about 4GB of them and then I back them up on a DVD. So the end result is I've got a bunch of iPhoto library discs that are organized by date with the original Xacti clips and I've got another bunch of DVDs with full DV copies of video on them. Usually there are only 6 - 8 videos on those discs so I just write the names of the videos on the discs. -Michael On 12/15/06, Lan Bui [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Michael, Thanks for the explanation, I watched (some) of the flashmeeting after it was over and wondered why you would convert such small files to big ones. As someone mentioned already, if you think that something you're shooting now is going to be tapped for inclusion in HD programming, then shooting and editing in HD is what you want to do. Other than that, it's not worth the time, money, drive space and potential need to upgrade hardware. Another decent option, assuming someone is using an editing system that reads timecode from the tapes and allows you to re-digitize the footage automatically, is to shoot in HD, but let the camera down-convert to SD when you load through firewire. Bill, Your comments on the phone companies PLANS are insightful and accurate and really get to the core of the whole net neutrality debate (another bizzillion channels of TV controlled by one source - or free/open network) ... but, just a couple of things I would add 1) The phone companies have been working on/promised to do this for many years and got a LOT of public support in one way or another and have not delivered, so I wouldn't say this is any done deal for the near future. Of course, they are much more motivated to do it now, since the FCC ruled that they can ignore common carrier laws a year ago - and the year moratorium is over - with the new fiber - so they will have a monopoly on ISP services on the fiber that they control. 2) Now that Democrats control congress, it's definitely far from certain that the phone companies will be able to legally allocate the band width based on where the content comes from, since the chances of net neutrality legislation passing is now very possible. ... I know what you said was not disagreeing with these things - just thought it important to clarify these points. ... The line may not be blurry in terms of the liability, but it is in terms of how you as an indie producer thinks about production. It's easy when it's just you and some friends making video to entertain yourselves, but what happens when it gets seen by millions of people. Watch the FourEyedMonsters.com podcast to see how success or perceived success can destroy friendships and working relationships when there aren't contracts. This lawsuit shows what happens when your indie media outlet blows up into something mainstreamish. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Are You Recommending HD Cameras Yet?
Robert et al., write in favor of shooting HD and I'll concur. Here's my summary of reasons for my own preference to shooting HD, even when the deliverable is 320x240 iPod or web video. 1. Shooting in an HD format like HDV is more future-proof that SD DV. If you edit using a editor that allows you to re-capture media in a different format, then it's trivial to take a show you edited in SD and recapture the pieces you need to create an HD version, for example, using the Media Manager feature in Final Cut, other editors have similar features. 2. We're evolving towards HD in terms of display devices in the hands of consumers. HD looks much better on the rapidly growing number of 1080i and 1080p large screen televisions out there, as well as the ubiquitous large LCD displays on laptops. As prices continue to drop, this will become the new standard for home entertainment. Most laptops are HD capable (1024x768 screens seem to be the new minimum with most screens larger). 3. It's not really a burden to shoot HDV and you need not edit in HDV (which requires a faster machine that DV for editing due to use of MPEG-2 format). You can simply capture SD DV through the camera, edit SD DV and deal with the fast workflow of SD DV. If you need more resolution for a special presentation or whatever, see #1 above. 4. The new generation of little HDV camcorders are almost as small as their DV counterparts. And it's more versatile to have the option of shooting DV or HDV. 5. We're evolving towards HD in production tools. Even digital still cameras with movie modes are moving towards higher resolution. 640x480 VGA is a good baseline right now, and compatible with SD DV, but the resolution is creeping up. 6. We're evolving towards HD in terms of distribution infrastructure. Internet-based television will not only soon equal the quality of terrestrial broadcast and cable HDTV, it will exceed it once Fibre becomes more common. This may not be a concern, but producers are always thinking about future-proofing media that has a long shelf- life, see #1 above. 7. Creative and political expression and the exchange of knowledge and ideas is more important that anything in points #1 through #6 above. The message will always transcend the medium and therefore points #1 though #6 are minor compared to the importance of the expressive work itself, especially in the era of participatory media, we have the option to work with a wide range of tools. RE: [videoblogging] Looking for topics on teaching about social media
Thanks Sean - Actually, Howard Greenstein from NYU (and Social Media Club fame) is also helping with some of the content of the class - and in particular the social media aspect of it. And - the first day of class will be on discussing what is Web 2.0 - and I will be videotaping the class - and crafting the class into segments for people to watch via a vLog from Cooper sometime in the near future. We are working on building a quick-and-dirty development shop to craft these educational videos for others to view afterward. Thanks for the help. It is the intent of the course to give the students an experience of building a product/service that is user-centric rather than engineering-centric (love of technology instead of solving the problem). That's an interesting comment. It made me go back and look at how I posted about this. I wrote: -- Get That Camera Video: The War on Journalism. Police steal vloggers camera. -- Not much commentary. I remember having a problem writing a description for this video. Part of the reason was that the video itself was so well done in telling the story and explaining what happened that I wanted to let the viewer hear the story directly from you. It's very powerful. Another reason the text on my post is sparse is that you don't describe the contents of your video in your blog post. A lot of time I like to copy and paste some text from to post I'm reblogging to help describe it. On your post you say: -- This video is dedicated to Independent Journalists worldwide who've paid a price for seeking the truth ... some more than others. ~presente HOW TO TAKE ACTION It's not like this is the 1st time ... CBS 2 Investigates: Videotape Cops At Own Peril In the last three years, there has been an increase of 25% in civilian complaints against the NYPD. In the last two years, there has been an increase of 12% in lawsuits filed against the NYPD for false arrest, assault, excessive force or other wrongdoing.* -- So to sum up, your video told the whole story and I basically wanted to link to it so people could watch it themselves. I was getting quite keen on the idea of a Z1 until I saw the following, on the DV list: I wonder if any of you have heard or have experience of this problem: I work for a hire shop that has about 20 Z1s (we are mostly Betacams but these little handycams are very popular with broadcasters). We are having an increasing problem with the ingress of dust into the lens assembly, which then seems to congregate on the inside of the front element in a patch that resembles mould (that was my initial diagnosis). We never had this problem with PD150/170s (in similar environments) so I am wondering whether there is some form of 'pumping' action inherent in the zoom/focus mechanism on the Z1s, that actively 'sucks-in' dust. We have a pre-paid service support scheme with Sony but it doesn't cover accidents or 'misuse'; Sony are implying the latter but to my mind and experience this situation suggests a design problem that they ought to be prepared to cover as necessary. The whole lens assembly has to be replaced since it is apparently uneconomic to strip and clean it. Perry Mitchell joly --- WWWhatsup NYC http://pinstand.com - http://punkcast.com ---

I posted the video and links to your site on my vlog this morning. I didn't want to blather on about it, I really want people to see what happened to you without me editorializing about it. It is that kind of video, it doesn't need a set up. Only a fool would argue that what we see didn't happen. I'm far from NY and I have been telling non-vlogging folks verbally about what happened to you. They nod their heads but I don't think it is real to them unless they see it. I'm more saddened that there is not an outrage or major stink about this criminal act by the police. Give it up for content y'al! I certainly lust after an HD television. Our friend has a sweet 42 Panasonic and we're always in awe of the HD experience. So... what does that have to do with videoblogging? Not a whole lot today, not something most vloggers need to worry about. But tomorrow is coming quick. Rocketboom has their stuff in HD. I shoot on a Sony HC1 which is small and not very expensive. However I hardly ever edit in HD - I basically think of it as a really good SD camera with sharp detail. But I've got that footage in HD should I have an opportunity to show a video on TV, or in a theater, or online. Strangely enough, I'm considering ditching the HC1 for a Panasonic DVX. I just love the 24p look, and the gamme curves (or whatever) that just look fantastic. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Andreas Haugstrup Pedersen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: 1) Shoot using the cheapest camera you can find. 2) Embrace compression artifacts. 3) Rejoice, send me a link and spend the money you save on things that actually matter (hint: it's not a green screen). - Andreas Den 18.12.2006 kl. 01:58 skrev Joshua Paul [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Not completely on topic, but not off either. [videoblogging] Re: converting from mpeg4 to dv
I've just gotten a Samsung NV3 which, with a 2 GB card can shoot up to two hours of video. It has three choices insofar as resolution goes:720 X 480, 640 x480, 320x240. I've just used the camera a few times and I've shot in 640X480. This downloads onto the desktop of my Mac as an avi file. No problem there. It is a fabulous tiny and good camera. Only have three power zoom but gives a great image (as can be seen in my video of Visual Arts Against AIDS) with decent lighting. It is terrible in low light. However, I was amazed at how good the sound was when I was filming a subway musician and a public announcement commenced blaring overhead and I just moved in closer (Baby Monroe). In order to edit it, I have to import it into iMovie from the desktop. This takes 4 to 6 times the length of the video. Once in iMovie, I can edit it in iMovie and then convert it using the expert setting I learned at www.freevlog.org into a Quicktime file which I've used to post the two mentioned vlogs on the Internet. I thought about getting an Xacti but this Samsung is supposed to be one of the few able to make videos in an MPEG format that can be be posted directly onto the Internet. I'm use to using a Sony HC42 mini-dv camera (great for dim light portability) and iMovie. I sat on my Sony HC42 the other day and it has been mailed off for repair. Now, all I have is this too big Sony HDV A1U (better than monsters three times the size usually required to take HD quality film) and am learning Final Cut Express from the ground up. I'm an old man who sometimes feels like he is losing the tech marathon to the next breakthrough camera :-). I have one-on-one training by someone who knows Final Cut Express. I know I have to master that and move on to Final Cut Pro. However, I think we must be doing something wrong. When I download any video into Final Cut Express, after it is edited, I have to export it using 'quicktime compression' settings. A nine minute vlog can take a good 45 minutes to export in that fashion and you end up with a huge Quicktime movie (425 MBs). Then, you have to import that back into iMovie (creating another huge file) and waiting 30-45 minutes for that to finish. (Fortunately, I have an old PC which I can use while the Mac is doing all this work.) Finally, I can re-export the 'imported file using the expert settings and get a 45MB Quicktime file to post on the Internet. I make sure I put the huge files into the trash. Fortunately, I have two 500GB internal drives in my Mac and have just added a third external 1 terabyte drive (1000GB). I know I really don't know what I am doing. I'm not particularly gifted in technology. I know I have outlined two different problems here. Focusing on the first, using the NV3, is there something I should be doing differently? Re: [videoblogging] Re: RSS as Relationship Tool
Here are my thoughts... The reality is there is money to be made in aggregating and presenting content. In other words it's a commercial use of people's content. Maybe a site doesn't have ads or even charges money for content but if they get lots of viewers because they have lots of content then, as we've seen with YouTube, they can be valuable. That's value built on the backs of others. Now I think if you opt-in to something that isn't displaying your license or linking to your permalink or is putting ads around your stuff than you've obviously agreed to that. No problem there. On the other hand, if like in the case of Network2, you have to opt-out then that's not cool at all. Some of my content is up there and I've never been asked about it. I have no agreement with them though they are, in my opinion, commercially using my content. Even if you could somehow argue that it wasn't a commercial use, they still aren't displaying the terms of my license. I also noticed while looking around that Fireant.tv has added ads to the page since I last checked. Not cool guys. There weren't any ads when I opted in. So what do I want from a directory? - I want it to be opt-in - I want prominent link to my site - I want a link to the post's permalink - I want a link to my feed (not the directory's feed of my stuff) - I want my work's license displayed I think this is the minimum required. -Verdi
Re: [videoblogging] Volume level problem on Xacti HD1A
Ryanne and I just noticed this with Jay's new camera. He's not here so we can't verify what settings he was using. I remember reading somewhere that, for my Xacti C5 at least, turning on wind reduction when you didn't need it could cause this problem. So I'd start with turning both noise and wind reduction off and see if you still have the problem. -Verdi On 12/17/06, Len Edgerly [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm having trouble with the volume level when I record video on my Xacti HD 1A. I agree (since April 05 ;-) You submitted your vlog in May 05: http://vlogdir.com/permalink/136 I guess the only open issue is about the ability to play video on vlogdir.com. I always looked at it as a way to preview content before choosing to subscribe or bookmark the site. But I will watch this discussion and will consider making the embedded videos from a submitted vodcast an opt-in as well. Since vlogdir is community-drive directory and is opt-in, i assume most are aware that videos are playable on the site and that is ok. But if you login, you can always edit/delete your vlog and/or feed. Also, at some point in 2007, I am going to upgrade vlogdir with a new UI and a few new features. I'd love feedback from anyone who is reading. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vlogdir-users/ Cheers, Sull On 12/18/06, Michael Verdi [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Here are my thoughts...
