I took the shell off this radio and determined that it's made in Italy, but learned little else. I'm pretty sure the black is ground, as it's commoned with the antenna-plug shielding. So that kills the DIN hypothesis. I've found there are a couple of US aftermarket standards that might apply, though they have striped tracers, and mine has none. Car radios often have a battery-hot wire (30) to maintain memory; an ignition-hot wire (54) to allow operation only with ignition switch on ACC or RUN; and an instrument-light wire (57a or 58) to illuminate at night. I'm assuming (!) this one has four + speaker wires and uses a - grounded speaker installation. So I'll begin careful testing. The truth: I'm planning a concealed mount for the radio/cassette player where it can play a cassette I have of an hour of German police calls. I've tapped into the power switch in the old Telefunken FuG-7b Sprechfunkanlage, and also into its faceplate speaker plus an under-dash communications speaker. Right now I use a remote boom-box for the sound effects at shows, but that's pretty unsophisticated. This is kind of cool. I had a question, though. To complete the whole German Police Car theme, do you have a German Shepherd? If I ever get as far with mine as you did with yours, I'm planning on adding special Disney Herbie features and quirks... [vintagvw] Herbie rides again!
Got my 66 back on the road again with help from a buddy of mine and his buddy at work. Turns out, the distributor from RockAuto was bad. He is back to the quirky self he was before the fire. Takes off in gears 1-3, and doesn't want to idle after running. Still working on getting the fire cleaned up from the body metal itself. I can sand the engine deck lid, and the outside of the louvers below the rear window, but I'm at a loss as how to take care of what is inside of the louvers. Anybody have any experience with that? Re: [vintagvw] Porcelain coating engine shroud
I was wondering more about the thermal properties versus the durability. I know chrome, while it looks cool, actually adds more heat to the equation. RE: [vintagvw] Mysterious electrical issues
No, I haven't fixed the wiper issue yet and they are calling for more rain. A minor question, if the wiper motor still works, would you be able to manually move the wiper arms back and forth? I've noticed when it was working before, I was able to do this, but now I am unable to. I imagine it still is a 6 volt wiper motor. If it is the only thing that is 6 volt still in the car, should I just replace it with a 12 volt job? I will take pictures, per request, zip them up and send them out. No, my horn doesn't work anyhow because of the non stock steering wheel the previous owner had put in. My blinkers don't work, but the indicator light comes on steady, but they blinkers don't. Not sure about my brake lights. They may or may not be working. I drive only around my small suburban town, so I don't know on that regards. I don't live with a flat surface so I can't easily ascertain if the brake lights are working. His right side headlight was NOT working, but now it is again. I guess I will take back the newly purchased one. Wondering what else besides a wiper motor I may need to purchase for it to get it fixed. Interesting thing is the Bakelite plastic fuse cover mentions that being fuse 8, but I really think it is fuse 1 for that's where all of the fuse 1 stuff goes according to the diagram I've seen. Even with fuse 1 being blown, it does still start. Ideas? RE: [vintagvw] VW declaring war on indies -- again
Hey guys. It is troublesome to see vw embrace this way of being. My German is rusty, but could you imagine what the jeep people would do if Chrysler tried to pull the same thing with the original jeeps? People around these parts (the Midwest) would probably take to the dealerships with pitchforks and torches in hand! I have nothing against vw trying to make reasonable amounts of money off of cars that were designed to last a long long time, as long as it fills my guidelines of being reasonable. Shutting out competition, adding litigation recompense into the regularly planned budget cycle, and then have your local dealerships tell you to get rid of your car rather than try and help you find parts for it all strike me as beyond the pale. Obligatory repair topic-has anybody ever swapped out the widow regulator or lifter in a drivers side door of a 66? Is a 65 the exact same part? I've done this (it was way easier on a vanagon) but the bracket at the bottom of the window doesn't line up with the lifter or regulator or whatever you call it. One side does, the side near the rear of the car, but the side near the front is too high and will not reach. The odd part is that the window looks ok in the frame an isn't crooked. Thinking of going to a hardware store and getting some sort of spanner bracket to get the front of it hooked up to the lifting or regulating mechanism. Being as it is winter here, I had picked this up for $20 and they through in an extra window crank handle. I know WW had them for $50, but I needed it right away. What do you all think? I've been running around with the door panel removed simply to save time when I get time to fix it. Also, speaking of Facebook redirects, my car is on Facebook now even though I'm not. Interesting about Rudy's message being classified as SPAM. Anyhow, my second rebuild of the carburetor I put in the extra parts I had neglected to put in before, and also replaced/rebuilt the choke diaphragm assembly. Car seems to run fine now, after it warms up, the idle speed may be a bit high. Starting it, seems to be a little iffy, but if I give it a lot of gas, and don't disengage the starter motor too quick, it isn't a problem. Yesterday, replaced both my headlights. Since it is a 66, there are extra lights within the bucket assembly. I've heard conflicting stories that these are turn signals, or parking lights. I couldn't find the parking light switch. I've tried it as turn signals, and the only thing lighting up in the front are some fender mounted-jobbies that I thought were stock but are definitely not. Car has some electrical issues, thankfully, they don't prevent me from driving it around town, but here they are: fuel gauge-used to work, but doesn't anymore. speedo-used to work, but doesn't anymore. wiper motor-may have worked one time, but doesn't anymore. There is a weird junction box in the trunk Volta Drop, Northridge California the only thing I found out about Volta Drop is they are no longer in business and opened for business in 1966. All of the fuses appear to be in good shape. Yesterday, while fiddling with the headlights at home, some sort of electrical smoke started but I couldn't isolate where it came from and it stopped. Other than that, it is fun to drive around this beetle, even if it needs a lot of TLC. Also, my job in town is going well, however; it may not last because I am temping here. Hey all, First off, let me open with a confession-when I investigated the fuel pump, I reversed the gas lines :-) Hopefully, that didn't mess things up too bad. I rebuilt the carb anyway. Still no luck, but my battery was down to 35% charge for it had sit for a while. Would that preclude a successful start, or did I really hose my carb up during the rebuild? I replaced parts out of the rebuild kit that matched that were new, with the exception of the gasket to the manifold itself for it is thicker than the one that came in the rebuild kit. Hopefully, the fully charged battery will do the trick. Hey John, While I was starting the car, and while he was fiddling with the carb, he noticed the pump at the side of the carb failed to do anything. With the gas we captured out of the fuel pump itself, he tossed into the carb bowl and the car started right up. How big of a deal is it to rebuild this carb? [vintagvw] Update on my 66 and the job front.
Hey all, It stops now. It isn't pretty, but it stops. A buddy of mine verfied that the carb is still bad. Purchased a rebuild kit, and am thinking about bribing my buddy to do it. Don't have a real, full time gig yet, but may be picking up a temporary position in my hometown that pays a little better than unemployment but is within easy bicycling distance, with luck. Sun visor clips. I replaced them, but like an idiot, didn't keep track of which visor went on which side. Anybody got any pointers on sorting this one out? Removed the pesky, poorly installed engine deck lid hinge. Going to replace it when I can, more than likely after the carb has been rebuilt. The people I bought the carb rebuild kit off of said, that, if the throttle body is bad, no way is the rebuild kit going to help and I will need a new carburetor. What are your thoughts on this? Good news, and bad news. Good-the shop I took it to checked out the charging system and it seemed fine. They cleaned out the carburetor and adjusted it. Said that the carb could've been the problem. Only charged me $65. The bad? I lost my job. And, the brake job didn't hold. May end up selling it. It's too bad because we need both cars, but my wife will be quick for me to sell it. Both idiot lights light up. They both show as RED in the ON (pre start) condition. If one of them is supposed to show green, that doesn't ever happen. Before I swapped out the generator brushes, when the car would die both idiot lights would come on. Oil level is fine, however; there is an oil leak. As far as 12 volt and 6 volt components go, here's what I have figured out: Definitely a 12 volt battery. Possibly a 12 volt generator. Definitely a 6 volt coil (I installed that one without thinking-is this going to cause problems down the line?) A 12 volt regulator 12 volt generator brushes (wonder what the difference is between 12 volt and 6 volt brushes?) Original 6 volt starter (I'm guessing here, but that is still my guess.) From near as what I can figure, the owner before the previous owner must have done the conversion to either fix bad starting condition? or put in a really cheap am fm cassette radio. Believe it is moreso the latter, and not so much the former. Me, myself, would be happy with one of those retrosound systems, but first things first- paint job, and the myriad of other parts it needs to look presentable. Also, somewhere along in there, and hopefully before winter sets in, a tuneup. Figure get the points, do all of that, and see how it goes. There is definitely a short of some sort in the electric system. Not sure how or where to track it down, but the dome light doesn't seem to work, nor do the headlights. The brake lights, and the tun signals work, though. Speedo gauge works, that's a good sign. the fuel gauge appears to work, too. When I thought that I hadn't fixed this dying out while running condition, turns out between my boy helping me run the car while I adjust the carb and me trying to start it, it ran it bone dry. Plan on cleaning out the engine area from all oil and grease. Figure that may be a good area to start looking for the oil leaks. Any tips on doing this? [vintagvw] 1966 vw beetle issues
Hey all, Picked this up about four weeks ago. Need to get it running more reliably. It's been in the brake shop for three out of four of those weeks. I've replaced the battery and coil. When I first got it, it was leaking oil but now it doesn't appear like it is. It still has a good oil level. The v belt seems tight, per the idiot book, but it seems to be draining the battery when driving. Could the generator or bilge regulator be bad? Or maybe just the connections? Oh yeah, it was converted to 12 volt, but it would appear to be the most jury-rigged conversion ever. Let me know, what you think, and I'll keep you updated. [vintagvw] Hello again!
I used to be a member way back in the 90s. I've only recently acquired an air cooled bug, so I am joining back. I picked up a 66 beetle. Believe it or not, it looked to be in better shape than two newer beetles I had looked at (both of these were super beetles. My first car was a 74 super beetle. I then had a square back.
