Re: Getting Started with Audible.com

2012-06-23 Thread Kimber Gardner
The only way I know to delete books from within the audible app, you
have to have the book playing . In other words, the
info/details/delete method can only be accomplished while you are
playing the file. So in order to delete all parts of a book, you have
to go to each part, start playing then double tap the info button, go
to the details tab then swipe to the delete button. It's a bit clunky
but becomes easier with practice.

Questions about the Huffington Post app, was, Re: News apps.

2012-06-23 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi Mary and All,

I just downlloaded the HuffPo app and I have a couple of questions.

There are a couple of buttons at the upper right of the screen that
just say left button and right button. What are these buttons?

Also, I don't seem to be able to move from page to page within an
article with any consistency. There are buttons at the bottom of the
screen for text zoom in and zoom out. I think zooming out let''s me
move from page to page, but sometimes this button is dimmed and the
page won't move.

Any tips for using this app will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Kimber

RE: Cards Alone

2012-06-23 Thread Jennie Facer
You have to double tap the up-side-down card, and it becomes right, so you
can move it into the open slots. The object of the game is to get only four
slots open with all of them in suit order from king down to ace.

Hi, to move the cards, double tap the one you want and Voice Over will say
selected. Next, tap in the slot you want to drop the card into and the card
will move there. This isn't like the double-tap and hold and drag concept
which Kings Corner uses.

Re: square iphone app?

2012-06-23 Thread James Mannion
I have heard that it is accessible. Here is the issue though. Since
the device plugs into your headphone jack on the IPhone, you would
need either a braille display or bluetooth audio such as a bluetooth
headset to hear the output. You also have to pair the bluetooth after
the device has been plugged in. I got all of this from the Tripple
Click Home podcast from Serotalk. It is on currently the latest
edition.

Hi, to move the cards, double tap the one you want and Voice Over will
say selected. Next, tap in the slot you want to drop the card into and
the card will move there. This isn't like the double-tap and hold and
drag concept which Kings Corner uses.

it was my first time calling into the show. I had to hold for about an

Hey all. I let this thread go on for a bit longer than I probably should
have, considering the closeness between Macs and iOS devices. However
now this thread has deteriorated into heated discussions about screen
readers and whether people know what they are talking about or not.
Whatever the case is, it's definitely off topic when it comes to iOS
devices.

So, let's stop further Mac discussions. Please take them to more
appropriate lists.

Thank you.

Subject: Re: THINKING ABOUT A MAC!
I got a macbook pro just over a week ago, but don't want to install windows on
this machine. I've been using it for mail, twitter, Skype and sometimes MSN,
but setting up to play muds takes a lot of effort and playing around with the
terminal. Pretty cool though once you get it up and working.
Yes it was expensive to buy, but it'll be worth it, since I don't have a
licensed copy of Office pro on my windows laptop and you can save things as
word format with text edit on the mac anyway. /the only thing I'm not too sure
how to do is make a table in text edit, although I did see something in the
menus for that.
Just a final point for now, I think the sound quality is better than that on a
windows laptop. I can hear voiceover just fine at 55% on the mac I'm writing
from now, but on the windows laptop, I have to turn NVDA up to 85 or 90% to be
able to hear it properly. The only time I've needed to use earphones is when
talking on Skype or playing games, because the tintin++ sounds are pretty quiet
sometimes. For that though, you can use the earphones from the iPhone if you
have one, since they're apple ones.
Oh, I almost forgot to say, the software for the mac is either nicely built-in
and very accessible (including the chess game), o else free or very cheap. If
you wanted office for the mac, for example, you would only have to pay £89, but
for windows version you have to pay over £400.
The only real thing I don't appreciate is having the @ symbol on the 2 key
instead of the ' key as it's meant to be in the UK keyboard layout, unless
that's just a windows thing.
Hope this extremely long e-mail helps,
Harmony.

I have 2 phones here: an iPhone 3GS and a HTC Dash_3G. I like the

Go to your app switcher. Press the Home button to get to the home screen
then click twice to get to the app switcher. There you should see a list of
yur running apps. Flick over to one of the apps; double tap and hold until
you hear "editing apps". Then double tap the app to delete it from the app
switcher -- i.e., close the app. If you keep double-tapping apps you will
close them and eventually your phone will say that the app switcher has no
more apps; you can then dismiss the app switcher.

FW: receiving pictures as attachments

2012-06-23 Thread John Riehl

In the recent book describing 21 cool apps for the blind is one called
Cards, which lets you create and send cards for birthdays, etc. One of the
features described is that you can use a picture you've taken or that you
have on your iPhone as part of the card.
My question is this: If someone sends me a picture they've taken as an
e-mail attachment, can I save the picture on my iPhone for later use? How do
I do that?
Also, can pictures be labeled: "John at the Beach" or "Fred my dog guide"?
I doubt if I'll be taking any pictures, but I'd like to have some I can send
to friends or use as part of a card.
the app in question, by the way, is

cards and it's in the app store, free, from Apple.

Re: Cards Alone

2012-06-23 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello Phil and all. Below is a message which I saved from a while back
which was written by the Cards Alone developer and he explains both the
games which come with this app.

I hope this answers your question.

> From: Iiro Viitanen
> Subject: Re: questions about cards alone
>
> Hello!
> First of all, thanks for purchasing and contacting me.
> I have made more specific instructions and here they come:
>
> Napoleon's Grave:
> When you begin a new game and start going through the main stack,
first you need to find a Seven to be placed on one of the "intermediate
piles" and a Six to be placed in the middle pile. Intermediate piles are
those on the corners which VoiceOver marks as "North-East",
"South-East", "South-West" and "North-West" piles.
> When you have placed one Seven you can place an Eight on the top of
the seven and so on up to the King. In this game the cards do not need
to be same suit. Again after you have placed a Six in the middle you can
place a Five on top of that and so on until you reach an Ace. After that
you place another Six and start building down again. You have to do this
four times and the last Ace must be the Ace of Clubs.

>
> The function of the "North", "East", "South" and "West" piles are to
store one card at a time. For example when you start and the first card
in the Main stack is an Eight, it's maybe a good idea to place that in
one of those piles. By doing that you can easily move it to an
intermediate pile if you get a Seven quite soon.

>
> In this game you are allowed to move cards back to the waste pile,
which may help in some cases.

>
> Hexagon:
> Hexagon has six equal piles which VoiceOver marks as "Twelve", "Two",
"Four", "Six", "Eight" and "Ten" piles according to their position. The
idea is to start building the piles down so that at the end each suit
will form one pile. For example if the first card you get is Seven of
Hearts you can place that in one of the piles. If you get Six of Hearts
you can place that on top of the Seven you placed earlier. Later if you
get Eight of Hearts and you have one free pile you can place the Eight
there and move the pile which has that Seven at the bottom, on top of
that Eight. When you have gone through the main stack, you can move the
waste pile to be the new main stack. You are allowed to go through the
main stack three times.

>
> Hope that this will give you some tips and yes in Napoleon's Grave
you are allowed to go through the main stack and waste pile just once :).

into the show. I had to hold for about an hour and 15 minutes, but it was worth
it.

RE: Pandora, the free version

Phil, thanks, but I did that before I wrote the message. Should have
clarified that. I'll figure it out. eventually.

Try deleting Pandora from the app switcher, then re-open the app.

The app switcher keeps track of screens and locations and such, and if
you're stuck in some intermediate screen of an app, clearing it out of the
switcher can sometimes help.

RE: Getting Started with Audible.com

2012-06-23 Thread Jesus Garcia
It is actually quite simple once you figure out or as in my case have
someone tell you how to do it see below.
You need to go to the info tab go in there then whichever title you were
pointing to should have a delete and I believe a move button though I could
be wrong about the move. Just double tap the delete button and again when
asked for confirmation.

Hi,

yes. you can download books directly from the app. I actually prefer this
to putting the books on my phone via iTunes. As far as the documentation, I
didn't even know it existed. lol. The app is fairly straight forward.
Just play around with it. The only things that is a bit round about is
deleting books once your done with them.

Hi, to move the cards, double tap the one you want and Voice Over will
say selected. Next, tap in the slot you want to drop the card into and
the card will move there. This isn't like the double-tap and hold and
drag concept which Kings Corner uses.

Rose, there is a help file on the Audible site associated with the

RE: Getting Started with Audible.com

Yeah, I have never quite figured out how to delete books from the app,
generally if he is well, I let my husband do that, seems to be easy for him.

Hi,

yes. you can download books directly from the app. I actually prefer this
to putting the books on my phone via iTunes. As far as the documentation, I
didn't even know it existed. lol. The app is fairly straight forward.
Just play around with it. The only things that is a bit round about is
deleting books once your done with them.

With your earphones unplugged, do a two fingered double tap to get music

  Hi there:

I'm looking for some good news apps. Not necessarily ones that will agrigate
content from RSS feeds, but something like CNN or similar. If anyone has any
suggestions, they would be very much appreciated.

  Best,

  Kevin

Pandora, the free version

2012-06-23 Thread Phil Halton
Try deleting Pandora from the app switcher, then re-open the app.

The app switcher keeps track of screens and locations and such, and if you're
stuck in some intermediate screen of an app, clearing it out of the switcher
can sometimes help.

Hi, to move the cards, double tap the one you want and Voice Over will
say selected. Next, tap in the slot you want to drop the card into and

bragging about Kim Komando show

2012-06-23 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hey all. Just want to share that the other day I saw a tweet from Kim
Komando mentioning accessible ways for blind people to use the computer.
It mentioned iPhones, Macs and Windows. I called into her radio show
today and spoke briefly about accessible apps. It was pretty nifty since
it was my first time calling into the show. I had to hold for about an
hour and 15 minutes, but it was worth it.

FW: Where to and navigation and a VoiceOver question

2012-06-23 Thread Richard Turner
Hi all,
I just wanted to share what a great response I got from the support folks
with the Where To app. I've already written them back to explain how
visually impaired people use the navigation apps, but I thought folks might
want to see what a truly helpful response I received.

  _

From: Ortwin Gentz [mailto:wher...@futuretap.com]
Sent: Thursday, June 21, 2012 1:17 PM
Subject: Re: Where to and navigation and a VoiceOver question

Hi Richard,
please see my answers inline.

Could you add Mapquest4Mobile to the supported gps apps?

Unfortunately, the Mapquest app does not support being started from third
party apps. So we can't add this app.

I could not find a "gigle" setting, at least I think that is what it said in
the FAQ section about setting a default gps app.

Sorry, we haven't written this with VoiceOver users in mind. We'll fix this.
There are two ways to set your preferred navigation app:

1. If you haven't set a preferred app yet, just use the gesture to open the
preferred app: long-tap on the directions button. Using VoiceOver this is a
tap, tap-hold combination. As long as there isn't a preferred app defined
yet, you'll be presented with a popover where you can just select an app. As
soon as you close the popover by tapping somewhere else, the preferred app
is set.

2. If you want to change your preferred app, you have to tap once on the
directions button to open the popover. Then long-tap (that is tap, tap-hold
in VoiceOver) on any app icon to start the jiggle mode. VoiceOver announces
this with "Started editing mode". Then a button named "Set Preferred"
appears on the top-left of the popover which leads you into "set preferred"
mode (unfortunately this isn't announced correctly in VoiceOver in this
version. Currently it just says "Ended editing mode" when it starts the "Set
Preferred" mode.). Now you can select your preferred by selecting it once
and dismissing the popover.

I know this sounds terribly complicated and we'd be glad to make it easier.
We were just not sure whether VoiceOver users could actually make use of
those apps because they are for car navigation mostly. If you could give us
some insight about typical use cases and which apps would be actually useful
for blind users, that would be very helpful to improve the app in the
future.

Also, I'm finding it hard to figure out how to add a place to the favorites
using VoiceOver. It seems like I'm missing something here.
Thanks for the VoiceOver improvements in the latest version.

This is actually quite easy. On the details page, the button in the bottom
right corner toggles the Favorite state. It says "Favorite Button" when not
favorited and "Selected Favorite Button" when favorited.

Then to access Favorites, you'd go to the Favorites tab on the bottom of the
home screen and select the "Places" tab on the top of the Favorites screen.

Hope that helps. If you've any further questions, I'm glad to help!

have, considering the closeness between Macs and iOS devices. However now
this thread has deteriorated into heated discussions about screen readers

Whatever the case is, it's definitely off topic when it comes to iOS

So, let's stop further Mac discussions. Please take them to more appropriate

Re: THINKING ABOUT A MAC!

2012-06-23 Thread John Panarese
In addition to what Ricardo points out, if you actually look at realistic
specification comparisons that have been done between high end PCs by the major
manufacturers, such as Dell, and a comparable iMac, the iMac ends up being less
expensive. For example, the really high end gaming systems that some people
buy are anywhere between $500 and $1500 more than an iMac with equal specs.
When you buy standard PCs, you are getting run of the mill parts. If you start
actually putting in quality components, then you pay through the nose. And
don't use that age old response that you can put a system together piece meal
on your own because that adds up in the end with the cost, shipping and time
spent building it. I've been there and done that many times. It's not like
the old days where it really did make a price difference.

It's a good idea to actually do actual research before making uneducated
assumptions. On top of that, there is an old saying that you "gets what you
pays for". Buy crap and get crap. Yeah, you can buy, for example, a Windows
laptop for $400 or $500, as my sister in-law just bought. However, I'd take my
Mac Book Pro any day over that for the quality of the hardware, the operating
system and the customer service. She has had nothing but trouble with her
laptop, especially in installing software and using it with external devices.
It is, btw, an HP laptop. HP tech support tells her that it's not their
responsibility as their standard line.

And you wonder why Johnny can't read. From Reuters: Egypt find out their

Another headline that caught my attention was Turkey vows necessary action

Of course, my favorite foreign affairs debate is, if Turkey was to invade

Now, back to our irregularly, unscheduled and unnecessary programming...

Hi,

yes. you can download books directly from the app. I actually prefer this to
putting the books on my phone via iTunes. As far as the documentation, I
didn't even know it existed. lol. The app is fairly straight forward. Just
play around with it. The only things that is a bit round about is deleting
books once your done with them.

Hi All,

Speaking of news apps, anyone have the USA Today app? I got it
recently. It says it is vo accessible, and it is. However it always
crashes before I have even read through the list of top stories of the
day. Crashing seems to be vo related though, as when sighted hubby
uses it, there are no problems.

Glad to hear CNN and NPR work well.

RE: Voicebook VO Notice

2012-06-23 Thread Marco Migotti
A feature that would be cool is to have the ability to join and read / post
to a group. Lots of companies are now using the group feature of facebook.

I love the app very much and I am looking forward to future updates and new
features. It's good to know that facebook doesn't have to be this place
where one gets angry and smacks their keyboards or in my case, wack the bed
with my fist.

Subject: Voicebook VO Notice

Hi all.

I'm Ben, the developer of the Voicebook VO app. Due to unfortunate
circumstances, I need to make everyone aware of an issue. I have been
working on an update that will address many of the concerns people have had
with refreshing, number of comments, as well as some enhancements.
Unfortunately, due to some "under-the-weather" days and an unforeseen
Hardware issue, this release is a bit behind schedule.

Being behind schedule, you will soon run into one of the bugs I hoped to fix
before it became an issue. However, I will not be able to get the update
through Apple's review process and into the store in time. The app will
begin prompting you to purchase an upgrade when you with to post your
status, like and item, or add a comment. When prompted, the price will not
display correctly. The price is $1.99, and $1.99 is what will be charged if
you make the purchase, but the screen will show you a mis-formatted string
of numbers rather than this price.

Please rest assured that only $1.99 is charged if you wish to make the
purchase. I'd ask that folks help spread the word about this formatting
glitch if and when people mention it. Also, know that you may continue to
use the app for free if you are simply reading your newsfeed and related
comments.

I hope to have the Hardware issue resolved and the app updated soon. After
these fixes, I've got some desired new functionality coming down the pick.
Please visit www.activeinfosys.com to view the product roadmap.

Thanks for your support!

Ben

All,

A cautionary note, this resolves the immediate problem, the expired

domain.

It in no way guarantees that the service will continue to function
into the future. If some one on this list knows those behind the
scenes with Webvisum, this would be the time to contact them with
offers of encouragement and support. What would it take to fully
restore and maintain the service? If you have a means of reaching the
maintainers please do so and please contact me off list:
len.bu...@gmail.com I would be very willing to directly assist with this

if I knew who to contact.

Hi all.

Here's a way how to make Webvisum working again.

Edit this file c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

At the end of this fyle type this:

204.14.19.231 api.webvisum.com

Save the file and restart your browser...

Now WebVisum will work again normally.

Moderator closing topic - Was Re: THINKING ABOUT A MAC!

2012-06-23 Thread Raul A. Gallegos

Thank you.

Some of the pods don't have compasses, this game uses them (according to
comments made on-list) so it's best to check around and see what applies to

receiving pictures as attachments

Re: THINKING ABOUT A MAC!

2012-06-23 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

With all do respect, I find this extremely hard to believe. Yes. Macs are
more expensive but, not twice as expensive as PC equivalents. An 21 inch iMac
starts at $1100. So, for you to spec that out to 2300, you must have added
some goodies. :). If you tried to build a PC equivalent of a $2300 iMac, you
wouldn't come close to spending under a grand. You would be talking at least,
15 to 1800 dollars. And that's excluding a screen reader of course.

Hi,

I have to disagree about customer service. many people have a Apple store that
they can go to and bring in their computer. Tell me the last time you've been
to an HP store? lol. And, what other computer manufacturer has a line just
for screen reader users? That alone makes their customer service head and
shoulders above their competitors. You also have the value of the product.
The re sale value of a Mac is nearly double that of a comparable PC. You think
not? Check out eBay or, Craig's list.

I also had mobile speak before getting an iPhone and I did pay almost $400 for
it. Not to mention the $150 or there about, to upgrade to 4.0.

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has found a way to create printed musical notation
from the mac/iOS?

I have windows available to me, but I'd rather not use it if I didn't have
to.

I've had a play with Lillypond but it seemed extremely complex considering
what I want to do.

I honestly wish the music programs like Sibelius were accessible. Voiceover
just crashes when I try and use it.

I have used Sibelius under windows and it works well, but under a VM which
is how I have windows set up on my laptop, I'm not sure how it would work
and I need it to be perfect.

Also if anyone has suggestions for an iOS app that might be worth looking
at, I'd really appreciate it.

If no one has any ideas I'll keep researching and let everyone know what I
find.

Thanks.

RE: THINKING ABOUT A MAC!

2012-06-23 Thread Scott Erichsen
Voiceover does not read tables on the mac at all. Therefore, in text edit,
it won’t be possible.

I like the mac, but the lack of decent word processing makes me have windows
installed for serious work.

Subject: Re: THINKING ABOUT A MAC!

I got a macbook pro just over a week ago, but don't want to install windows
on this machine. I've been using it for mail, twitter, Skype and sometimes
MSN, but setting up to play muds takes a lot of effort and playing around
with the terminal. Pretty cool though once you get it up and working.

Yes it was expensive to buy, but it'll be worth it, since I don't have a
licensed copy of Office pro on my windows laptop and you can save things as
word format with text edit on the mac anyway. /the only thing I'm not too
sure how to do is make a table in text edit, although I did see something in
the menus for that.

Just a final point for now, I think the sound quality is better than that on
a windows laptop. I can hear voiceover just fine at 55% on the mac I'm
writing from now, but on the windows laptop, I have to turn NVDA up to 85 or
90% to be able to hear it properly. The only time I've needed to use
earphones is when talking on Skype or playing games, because the tintin++
sounds are pretty quiet sometimes. For that though, you can use the
earphones from the iPhone if you have one, since they're apple ones.

Oh, I almost forgot to say, the software for the mac is either nicely
built-in and very accessible (including the chess game), o else free or very
cheap. If you wanted office for the mac, for example, you would only have to
pay £89, but for windows version you have to pay over £400.

The only real thing I don't appreciate is having the @ symbol on the 2 key
instead of the ' key as it's meant to be in the UK keyboard layout, unless
that's just a windows thing.

Hope this extremely long e-mail helps,

Harmony.

like mac, and it does things what I need (msn, skype, mail, twitter, web
browsing) very well.

i've used it so litttle, that I can't tell much right now.

I've heard that the text processing isn't so good as it is on windows. as I
need to write lots of text at school, I decided to install windows on my mac
book air with bootcamp as second OS to do my school stuff on it.

overpriced they may be, but their quality (and warrantee service) are

for mobile speak or talks on a microsoft device (which, itself, may be
overpriced)?

I have no love for MS products. they were never intended to have any
accessibility built in (again, you need to pay out extra for that and it is
often more than most blind/VI people can afford).

I have 2 phones here: an iPhone 3GS and a HTC Dash_3G. I like the
responsiveness and ease of use the iPhone offers. I had to spend $390 just
to make the dash accessible, and that even required a sighted person to set
it up for me. believe me, given the choice, I would rather use linux or OS X
and to hell with MS products.

Based upon limited knowledge Macs are overpriced. The screen reader

Stop that! Going back and forth is the worst thing you can do! Trust me on

that.

Hi Carol ,

I bought a Mac back in January, and I still haven't gotten the hang of

voice over.

I went to the Apple store, who were not much help, and tried to find

tutorial videos but not much is out there.

I guess my problems stem from me going back and forth between Zoom and

voice over, something I do all the time on my PC. I do have some vision, so

I only want to use the screen reader for a few things. I can not find the

proper settings to run it like I run my PC. Perhaps they do not exist.

I run both Mac and PC through the same monitor using a VGA A B switch.

I am currently on a PC with Zoom Text, which never fails to disappoint me.

As said above, there is a learning curve, it does not seem as intuitive as

the iPhone.

Just my two cents worth,

Chuck
