Re: NFB Convention -- who is coming

2012-06-28 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi lists, I'm allowing this discussion here as long as it doesn't get too out
-of-hand. I think this can be a good opportunity for Mac / iOS users to connect
up and say hi.

Please do keep this thread under control, K? What I mean is please let's just
stay with networking here and not get into side discussions about the NFB / ACB
or the conventions themselves. Okay?

I think if we do that, then this thread can prove to be quite a valuable
resource for those attending the two upcoming conventions…

Thanks so much!

accessible pedometer

Hi everyone

I've tried to find an accessible pedometer for my iPhone and have come
across one called StepTrakLite on the applevis site. However, I cannot find
it in the itunes store. I have ITreadmill but there are quite a few buttons
which are not labelled. Basically all I kneed is something which counts my
steps. Does anyone have any ideas of any other apps which I could download?

Thanks

Re: Wonderful customer service!

2012-06-28 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
I find it amazing how different store reps will have varying
experiences. The last two times I went into an ATT store to update
stuff, I was the one teaching some of the reps about Voice over. I
wonder if it depends on the blind user population of a specific area.
Here in Fort Wayne Indiana there aren't as many blind people as other
cities, like, umm, home, where's that for me? Denver Colorado. Now,
there's a city one can call home. Anyway, I digress. I would venture a
guess that finding someone at a cell phone store who knows more about
Voice Over is more likely in Denver.

Hello list, I wrote a post to the list on Sunday, asking for help,
trying to
get a piece of an audio cable out of my iPhone four. This is a
followup! I
took my Iphone down to the Apple store today, without an appointment.
I got
to see one of the guys at the Genius bar within half an hour. He took my
Phone, went to the back, and tried to get the tip out of the jack. He
then
brought me the phone, was very apologetic, about his not being able to
get
the thing out of there! He then told me about a company called I
fixit, and
found their website, filled out the form, that would have them call, or
email me, instead of just writing down the information, which I
offered for
him, since I thought it would make it easier for him. No, he wanted
to make
things as easy as possible for me, seeing that I was blind, he was very
polite, and was as helpful as he could be, even after I told him my phone
was out of warranty, and I didn't have Apple care, since I couldn't
afford
it, when it came close to the time for my warranty to run out. I then
told
him I wanted to look at a couple of things. He said he'd hook me up
with a
sales representative, and for me to just stay where I was, while he took
care of it. He then came back, told me I was third in line, and that I
should just hang out right there, until the man got to me. I waited,
probably 15 minutes more, watching the very large crowd of customers!
Then
I met Chris. Again, he was very polite, asked lots of questions about
what
I wanted, and needed in a computer. Now, I told the guy right up front,
that I wasn't going to buy anything that day, and probably wouldn't be
buying from that store, but buying something on EBay. He was totally fine
with that, saying they didn't work on commission anyway, and he wanted to
give me all the time, and information I needed, so that When the time
to buy
came, I had as much good information as I needed. He even told me
where the
ATT store was, right in the same mall, in case I decided to try and
get a
simm card adapter, to put into an old phone I had. He then took me
around
the store, showed me an IMac, a mac mini, and a macbook air. There was
a big
crowd around the Macbook pros. He then asked me about buying a
refurbished
computer, and I told him that probably wasn't an option, but to tell
me more
about it. He then showed me all the computers, read the special deals on
the site, about refurbished machines, demonstrated speakers, sound, and
other things I wanted to check. I even looked at a couple of docking
stations, to make sure that I could still hear voiceover through the
dock,
if I ended up buying one. He even showed me a snazzy Bluetooth
speaker. We
had to take my Otterbox case apart, and he wanted to wipe the phone
and case
completely clean, before putting it back in it's case. I said Ok. He
then
took the phone, then came back, and said he wanted to try one last
time to
get the tip of the plug out of the phone. I said sure. He took the
phone,
did some working around, came back, all smiles, and said it was indeed my
lucky day! He had gotten the stupid piece out of the headphone Jack. I
spent quite a bit of time with him, and he was really fantastic! This
is a
totally different experience than I have ever had before, from any
computer
store! After all this, they didn't charge me one penny, for the time,
and
information I received. He

Re: accessible pedometer

2012-06-28 Thread Suzanne Wilson

Hi Raul,

One thing I have been wondering about iTreadmill is how to adjust it to your
pace. Out of the box so to speak, does it just assume that everyone walks a
twenty-minute mile? I find that it sometimes under- or overestimates how
far I have gone. For instance, if I'm in a more traffic-intensive area or
one that's got tricky footing, I walk slower, but the app still seems to
think I'm going at my regular pace. Hope I'm making sense.

Re: Maybe I'm dense, have a couple of questions.

2012-06-28 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi
I don't have experience with jaws 11 and iTunes but that aside, the basic
iTunes interface in windows is very similar to how you would be use to it on
the mac. For example to add music you can just go to the file menu and arrow
down to add folder.
Btw you have the same add to iTunes automatically folder on your mac as
well. You will find it in the iTunes Media folder. If you like you can just
dump the ringtones and music straight into this folder and they will all be
aded to the iTunes library ready for syncing to the phone.

make a complete backup of my iPhone?
 2. I have several files, that are already the ringtone format, how do I get
them from a compact flash drive, where I put them just for storage, into
 iTunes?
 3. How do I get music into iTunes, so I can then synch it, and get my music

automatically put into iTunes, or something to that effect. I need very
detailed, very simple directions please? I hope this isn't off topic for

would be to copy the files into a folder called automatically add to

Hi. By default it will show you the temperature as a badge icon on the home
screen. To look at the forecast, just double tap the program on your home
screen and when it opens it will show you the list. It uses location services
to determine where you are. So if you have those enabled then it should work
fine. If you disabled your location services, then you will have to add a
location manually from within the app.

  I hope this helps.

Re: Hi there I have a problem with downloading apps and games, once I download it does not finish to download...can you help me

2012-06-28 Thread Paul Ferrara

How do you know the download does not finish?
Best way to see if an app downloads correctly is to flick through your list
of apps until you reach the one you are downloading.
Listen for VO to tell you its download status, and when the name of the app
is spoken and it says double tap to open, the download is complete.

Re: accessible pedometer

2012-06-28 Thread Rob Harris
Where do you set those details? I've had it a while and not found them yet.
And yes, I think it thinks of a fixed length stride, and I don't; all
depends on mood, temp, footing like someone said, and so on. But since I
pound the same route a great deal, once it was fairly consistent about
distance, I stopped using it and just watched the clock like before.

Hi, I highly recommend iTreadmill. I use it all the time to walk outside

set it to your height and weight. If you check the list archives, you
will find past discussions about this great app.

Good luck.

Hi, did you customize it with your height and weight? I'm not sure, but I
think adjusting the height might help it better auto-adjust the distance
traveled.

One thing I have been wondering about iTreadmill is how to adjust it to
your pace. Out of the box so to speak, does it just assume that
everyone walks a twenty-minute mile? I find that it sometimes under- or
overestimates how far I have gone. For instance, if I'm in a more
traffic-intensive area or one that's got tricky footing, I walk slower,
but the app still seems to think I'm going at my regular pace. Hope
 I'm making sense.

Hi, I highly recommend iTreadmill. I use it all the time to walk
outside or on the treadmill. It doesn't use gps and it's very accurate
once you set it to your height and weight. If you check the list
archives, you will find past discussions about this great app.

 Good luck.

Ringtones

I don't have experience with jaws 11 and iTunes but that aside, the basic
iTunes interface in windows is very similar to how you would be use to it on
the mac. For example to add music you can just go to the file menu and arrow
 down to add folder.
Btw you have the same add to iTunes automatically folder on your mac as
well. You will find it in the iTunes Media folder. If you like you can just
dump the ringtones and music straight into this folder and they will all be
aded to the iTunes library ready for syncing to the phone.

make a complete backup of my iPhone?
 2. I have several files, that are already the ringtone format, how do I get
them from a compact flash drive, where I put them just for storage, into
 iTunes?
 3. How do I get music into iTunes, so I can then synch it, and get my music
onto it. There was a post earlier, saying to put music in a folder, called
automatically put into iTunes, or something to that effect. I need very
detailed, very simple directions please? I hope this isn't off topic for
this list, but I'm hoping it isn't, since my ultimate goal is to get these
 things onto my iPhone.

Hi, a badge icon is the number which shows up after the name of the app.
The mail app is a good example. So, if you have 55 new messages, it will
say, Mail, 55 new items. The Fahrenheit app uses the badges to show the
current temperature. So, if it's 85 degrees out, it will say Fahrenheit,
 85 new items.

 Hope that helps.

Hi. By default it will show you the temperature as a badge icon on
the home screen. To look at the forecast, just double tap the
program on your home screen and when it opens it will show you the
list. It uses location services to determine where you are. So if
you have those enabled then it should work fine. If you disabled
your location services, then you will have to add a location

 I hope this helps.

RE: Wonderful customer service!

2012-06-28 Thread Gail the U. S. Male
True, but I believe Denver is much larger than Fort Wayne. I live in
Denver, and have relatives in Indiana, but have never been to Fort Wlayne,
but I've still had to educate some of the ATT people here, about voiceover.
They've kind of heard of it, but have no earthly idea what it is, or what it
does.

I find it amazing how different store reps will have varying experiences.
The last two times I went into an ATT store to update stuff, I was the one
teaching some of the reps about Voice over. I wonder if it depends on the
blind user population of a specific area.
Here in Fort Wayne Indiana there aren't as many blind people as other
cities, like, umm, home, where's that for me? Denver Colorado. Now, there's
a city one can call home. Anyway, I digress. I would venture a guess that
finding someone at a cell phone store who knows more about Voice Over is
more likely in Denver.

He took
my
Phone, went to the back, and tried to get the tip out of the jack. He
 then
brought me the phone, was very apologetic, about his not being able to
 get
the thing out of there! He then told me about a company called I
 fixit, and
found their website, filled out the form, that would have them call, or
email me, instead of just writing down the information, which I
 offered for
him, since I thought it would make it easier for him. No, he wanted
 to make
things as easy as possible for me, seeing that I was blind, he was very
polite, and was as helpful as he could be, even after I told him my
phone
was out of warranty, and I didn't have Apple care, since I couldn't
 afford
it, when it came close to the time for my warranty to run out. I then
 told
him I wanted to look at a couple of things.
He was totally
fine
with that, saying they didn't work on commission anyway, and he wanted
to
give me all the time, and information I needed, so that When the time
 to buy
came, I had as much good information as I needed.
He then asked me about buying a
 refurbished
computer, and I told him that probably wasn't an option, but to tell
 me more
about it. He then showed me all the computers, read the special deals
on
the site, about refurbished machines, demonstrated speakers, sound, and
other things I wanted to check. I even looked at a couple of docking
stations, to make sure that I could still hear voiceover through the
 dock,
if I ended up buying one. He even showed me a snazzy Bluetooth
 speaker. We
had to take my Otterbox case apart, and he wanted to wipe the phone
 and case
 completely clean, before putting

Hi lists, I'm allowing this discussion here as long as it doesn't get too
out -of-hand. I think this can be a good opportunity for Mac / iOS users to
connect up and say hi.

Please do keep this thread under control, K? What I mean is please let's
just stay with networking here and not get into side discussions about the
NFB / ACB or the conventions themselves. Okay?

I think if we do that, then this thread can prove to be quite a valuable
resource for those attending the two upcoming conventions.

Thanks so much!

  Hi,

JAWS sometimes reads information that's really not on the screen, since the
status bar changes every time you add or remove things from your library. From
what I can see, jaws has trouble keeping up with the changes, so it reads bits
and pieces of the status bar the way it was rendered previously. Unfortunately,
there's no real way to fix that, either.

shows I have 943 songs but when I look at the status line jaws insert
pagedown it shows

  1429 945 songs, 3.3 days 6.5 gbmb

What does the 1429 represent and where are the 2 songs coming from that
aren't listed in the music playlist?

The best part of it is that the app seems to be fully accessible with VO.

Another accessible Browser hits the App Store. Google Chrome.

2012-06-28 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi all.
If you are looking for an alternative to Safari, Google's Chrome Browser has
hit the App Store. It seems to work extremely well with VoiceOver.
The only thing that you don't get is the ability to open linked items in the
Chrome app, and the page loading noises that you have in Safari.
Don't get me wrong. I love Safari. However, it is nice to have alternatives.
Enjoy,
Matthew Campbell.

The thing I cannot figure out is how Chrome is really any better at least on

Hi,

The biggest difference on the Mac is no busys. Not a one. Never. It also
feels a bit snappier when browsing. Their are some accessibility issues with
chrome on the Mac though. The biggest one for me being, You can't jump to
elements such as buttons, links, and pop up menus contained in tables with the
rotor, item chooser or, Voiceover commands.

hellow,
normally voxer will say a number after the unread messages. Zellow is ok,
althought not necessarily better, since you've got to wait for people to
accept your contact. I like the fact that you can talk on public channels
though. To delete messages from voxer, double tap and hold your finger on
a

message, and swipe to the right. Take your finger off and look for confirm
delete whatever that message is. Once you delete messages you've read you
won't have so many to look through to find teh unread ones.
Hope that helps,
Harmony.

that has changed with updates to the Voxer app? My main complaint to

So, I'm asking for a comparison. I know I can just download and try it.

2012-06-28 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I won't pretend to know if they care or, don't care but, I think who ever told
you that last bit is mistaken. although I'm firmly in the Apple camp, its only
fair to point out the improvements made to accessibility in Android in 4.0 and
now 4.1. It might not be as good as an iPhone but, Google has not been
twiddling their thumbs in regards to accessibility the last year.

If you disabled
your location services, then you will have to add a location
 manually from within the app.

 I hope this helps.

2012-06-28 Thread Cristobal
One of the bullet points I read in the Jelly Bean news yesterday with all
the tablet and glasses buzz was that it would have improved accessibility
and Braille display support.

I guess we'll have to see what exactly improved accessibility means, but
Braille display support I am interested by. I currently have an iPad and
have been considering getting my sighted wife a tablet and if this new
Google tablet will in fact have serious accessibility baked in similarly to
how the iOS devices are, then that's probably going to tip the scales.

Apple so far is still the the gold standard, but if Android 4.1 is really
going to be an improvement, I'm all in for just $200.00 or $250.00 as a
secondary device.

I just downloaded 10 items which is a simple to-do list that supports an
unlimited number of items. When reading the description on the Applevis web
site, it said the app was free; however, it turned out to be $0.99 when I
found it in the app store. The app is very accessible and very easy to use.
I really like it, though, and am not at all sorry I got it.

RE: google chrome?

2012-06-28 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi,

This brings up a really interesting question. Has anyone noticed that when
performing a search for an app yields different results on an iPhone as
opposed to an iPad? Also, what methodology does Apple use to sort the search
results by?
Just an interesting observation/question to ponder.

Manual of the United States second edition

2012-06-28 Thread Scott Howell
All,

The developer of the Manual of the United States has developed a second edition
to the popular app. Although most of the content is accessible, there are a
number of unlabeled buttons and some with unusual labels. I contacted the
developer, Clint Bagwell, and he said it is likely because the original buttons
were sort of uninteresting and VO is now reading the image title instead of the
label for the button, which of course no label exists. So, CLint will be
working on labeling the buttons, but he is also interested in hearing from
folks on what they would like to see in the app with regard to accessibility. I
have provided him information about the resources at APple Vis and this mailing
list. So, if you choose to purchase the app or have purchased the app, please
drop him a note via the web form on the site. He is very responsive. I just
picked the second edition up, so I have not explored everything yet myself.
You can submit any requests by going to,
http://cbagwellconsulting.com/iphonesupport.html.

Here is a description and link to the app in the iTunes app store.
We followed up the popular Manual for the United States of America app with a
Second Edition, redesigned for the next generation of the iPad. Along with the
documents and presidential/state facts found in the original version, we have
added more visual and timely information presented with higher resolution
images. New features include news headlines, contact information for government
officials, an interactive U.S. map, and a 2012 Election Center. We encourage
you to explore different areas of the app to find special sections about the
flag, the founding fathers, and important government buildings. BRANCHES OF
GOVERNMENT: Find facts and bios of Presidents, contact information for Senators
and Representatives, bios of current Supreme Court Justices, information about
current cabinet positions, landmark Supreme Court cases, and Rules of the U.S.
Senate/House of Representatives/Supreme Court. 2012 ELECTION CENTER: Track
election results for Presidential, Congressional, Gubernatorial races and
special initiatives on state ballots. Search congressional elections by
district along with a chart showing total seats per party. Get more info about
Presidential candidates and count electoral votes by state on our election map.
DOCUMENTS: Read the following documents with notes: Declaration of
Independence, Constitution, Articles of Confederation, Federalist Papers,
Anti-Federalist Papers, Washington's Farewell Address, Emancipation
Proclamation, Gettysburg Address, Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Address, How Our Laws
Are Made, Civil Rights Act, and more. Special sections about the Constitution
and Declaration of Independence include images of the original documents,
paintings depicting their signing, and biographies of the original signers.
STATE INFO: Use our interactive map to see how state and national boundaries
have changed over time from the end of the Revolutionary War to the present.
Get facts about states, territories, and the design of their flags. INFLUENTIAL
WRITING: Explore ideologies that influenced the nation's founding with writing
from Thomas Paine, Adam Smith, David Hume, and John Locke, Thomas Jefferson,
and John Adams. A special section highlights Patrick Henry and his passionate
plea for independence from Great Britain. THE FLAG: View a diagram, historical
designs, and handling instructions. This section includes U.S. Code about the
flag and an informational pamphlet. The First Edition of the Manual for the
United States of America is still available (separately) for iPhone and iPod
Touch on the App Store.

Ah!

I see. These rules /folders are only contained to Apple Mail on your Mac then.
As far as I know, there is no way you can sink these with dropbox. You need
to set up folders and rules in your IMAP or exchange account, mor than likely
on the web, to have your folders synced across all computers and devices.

gps:questions

2012-06-28 Thread Littlefield, Tyler

Hello all:
While I know a bit about them, I've not used to much in the way of gps.
So here's my question.
I'm headed off to ACB in about a week or so, and I'd like to be able to
go walk around and get where I want to go. So, a friend told me about
around me, which she really likes. What else do you guys recommend?
Someone else mentioned blind-square, how useful is that?

Also, one of my biggest issues is intersections. I do ok when I know
what they are and all that, but it's hard figuring them out--is this a
stoplight stoplight, double stopsign, stopsign stoplight etc. Is this
something I'm just lacking in terms of mobility, or is this generally an
issue? Does the gps tend to help out with stuff like that?

Re: Using HeyTell on an iPhone 4

2012-06-28 Thread Wayne Merritt
Thanks for the suggestions. I got an answer from someone on Twitter,
and in case others were wondering the same, here's what I found. If
you double tap on the name of the relay, or I assume the name of the
group (assuming you have been approved to join the group), then the
messages will start playing. There after, messages automatically play
when people post them to the group, as long as you are in the HeyTell
app. I'm not exactly sure what a public relay is either, other than
being a central group that people can join so they can post updates or
follow the group's activities during an event. I've heard that as of
tonight, there are over 100 people part of the group already, and the
convention doesn't really get tgoing till Saturday. Looks like this
could get quite busy. There doesn't seem to be a way to skip through
messages, so I guess once you're in Heytell, then you have to listen
to all messages, or perhaps you only hear a select few. Either way, it
seems like a great way to stay up to date on what's going on with a
group, or to follow the group's happenings if you can't be there live.

In case anyone is interested, go to the following link if you are
going to the convention or want to follow from afar:
http://heytell.com/nfb

Have fun,
Wayne

If I can't get this running by tomorrow afternoon, then I'll abandon
it for the convention. Not worth the time and effort, IMO. If I
uninstall the app, will I automatically be removed from the public
 relay list of participants?

find any user names or other spot where I can double tap to listen to
messages that have been posted. I have also tried double tapping
someone's name in the notification center, thinking that would let me

Re: Fahrenheit app

2012-06-28 Thread James Mannion
No because there is absolutely no way for anyapp to get the
temperature of the room you are in. The IPhone does not have the
hardware to do that. Would be cool if it did though.

The Current Temperature Push app does the same thing. I wish mine said
85 new items, grin. As it is, yesterday it said 100 new items.

If you disabled
your location services, then you will have to add a location
 manually from within the app.

 I hope this helps.

How can I stop unwanted Twitter text messages

2012-06-28 Thread Kathy Blackburn
For the last several days, I have been bombarded with text messages from
Twitter from accounts I do not follow. Some are obviously spam, others are
just juvenile silliness. For every account I report as spam, another
appears. Short of cancelling my Twitter account, what can I do? I am forced
to keep my iPhone in airplane mode for much of the day and night just to
save my sanity. My cell phone service is from ATT.

RE: turning on data plan on iPad

2012-06-28 Thread Joseph Lee
Hi,
To enable and use data plan, be sure you have the SIM (micro SIM) inserted
to the iPad. To check from iPad side, go to Settings/General/Usage and go to
cellular data screen (if I remember right from my iPhone 4S) or check the
left side of the status bar (top bar on the screen), which should show you
ATT icon and signal strength, and in case of iPad III and iPhone 4S,
whether you are using 4G (or pseudo 4G) connection - 4G LTE for iPad III,
HSUPA (3.75G) on iPhone 4S. Once data plan is active, check the usage
regularly (Settings/General/Usage/Cellular) so that you can regulate the
data usage stats (it conveniently shows you the data usage (sent and
received) amount in megabytes).
Cheers,
Joseph

Re: dropboxRe: GoogleDrive IOS app hits the App Store

2012-06-28 Thread James Mannion
I am not certain of the answer to your question, but you might try
double tap and hold on the file name for a few seconds. If you have
your sound on you will hear the rising tone sound after you hold for a
second or two. It's just the most common way of getting to options if
they are there that would be the kind of thing you would find in a
context menu. There is no risk in trying this because if there is
nothing it will only result in the double tap action anyway.

iCloud verifying password

2012-06-28 Thread Kim

Hi,

Yesterday something catastrophic happened with my iPhone and
forced me to do a reset. All went well except for 1 thing...now,
each time I unlock the screen I'm asked for my password, which is
fine and what I've set it to do, but then it tells me that
iCloud needs me to verify my password. I've gone into setting
and then iCloud and I noticed that the password field had 8
characters and my password has 10. So I corrected that and saved
the correction. But next time I unlocked the screen it was the
same thing all over again. I checked my password and it had 8
characters, again, so I corrected it again, and the next time I
unlocked the screen...I think you get the message. What else can
I do?

Thanks in advance.

Kim
