Re: tonido: how safe is it
The way I see it Tonido is no safer than any other solution that exists. Remember only you can share that personal data of yours, no one else. I haven't used the service yet but I know you don't have to share an entire drive or drives. You can for example share a drive where only music and other media content are stored. As I say the only way to be 100% safe is to completely disconnect from the internet. Christopher Hallsworth On 14/11/2012 07:46, Fanus wrote: Hello list How safe is tonido? RE: tonido: how safe is it
Hi Fanus, I just did a bit of reading about Tonido and it actually does seem like an interesting solution if you want to access the data on your computer. I doubt that Tonido staff coulde access the information as it's pretty standard nowadays that passwords are encrypted and in that respect it's probably as safe as the password you create. If you use the name of your dog or your birthdate then no, it's not safe. If you use something that's made up of random or seemingly random characters in upper case, lower case, numbers and symbols and it's at least 10 or 12 characters long then I'd say it's pretty safe, after all, I use those kinds of passwords for my online banking. The good thing is that Tonido actually doesn't store stuff on their servers as is the case with Dropbox and other cloud sync services. The data is on your PC and you can access it via the app on your iPhone or by going to a particular URL where you would then sign in with your user name and password. Re: tonido: how safe is it
Tonido states that they will not and cannot access user data, and while I suppose I wouldn't trust it with life and death matters it seems reasonably secure. I am sure there are possible security issues but that is true of pretty much any cloud solution, including Dropbox and even Google. Dropbox had an authentication bug for a few hours one day back in 2011 that allowed anybody to login to any Dropbox account with any password at all; there was some publicity of this bug that you may have seen. Tonido states that the technology they are using does not allow the company to find out your password and hence access your data even if they wanted to, which is more than plausible. All in all, it doesn't sound like we need to be too worried. Grant On 11/14/12, Rob Harris bobs...@googlemail.com wrote: I kept asking this question. And when you buy another playlist to play, do you keep those songs from it to add to your music collection, or again is it just something the app stores within itself? Finally, how would I play with others? I know you said you've never played but by yourself, but I thought maybe you could somehow play against people in the game center, or on Facebook? The button you are looking for is the play button which is on the left side of the screen about in the middle. it however isn't clear to the left. after activating the play button you have a screen where you choose your categories. There are several free catagories and then you can buy others at $.99 each. After activating your category, you go to a screen to choose the number of players from 1 to 4. I have never used more than 1 so I don't know what happens if you choose more than 1. then you must type your name and hit the go button at the bottom of the screen just to the left of the delete button. At this point, if you want to type your answers chose expert mode, and if you want multiple choice, choose MCQ. At this point, the songs will be downloaded and you must hit start game on the left side of the screen to start the game. Reading and replying to email, something that I find somewhat tedious on my 4s. On the Mini just as the regular ipad, you have containers so when using it for mail, it is very similar to what you would see in Outlook, or Outlook Express in that you have a list of messages on one part of the screen with the message content on another part so it's a split interface. I find this interface much more pleasant to use. This means I can now use the Mini anywhere in the house for mail without having to spend hours a day in front of my computer. 2. The Mini has very pleasant sounding speakers so it's great for listening to podcasts. For me, it's a nicer experience than on the phone. The speakers aren't' terribly loud, but certainly loud enough. For me the Mini is really a consumption device for podcasts, books, both audio and non-audio. This would also hold true for the iPod but with the added benefit of a larger screen and more reading area. Surfing on the Mini is really nice. I suggest you check one out before purchasing an iPod to see if it suits your usage patterns. Personally, I don't like wearing headphones which is another reason why I like the Mini with its built-in speakers. Best, Rick -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Eric SS Sent: Saturday, November 03, 2012 8:47 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: iPad Mini has arrived - first impressions Rick, I had been considering the Mini as a means of cancelling telephone service and just using Google Voice or Skype for the very occasional calls I make. I had ordered the WIFI and cellular device. I wish the Touch came in a cellular version because it just seems the added screen size of even the Mini is wasted for those of us with no sight. In the meantime, I changed my Verizon plan, which now gives me unlimited talk time. While I do make few calls, they do tend to be lengthy. How did someone who doesn't like talking on the phone end up with friends who use it so much? So, I decided I would cancel my Mini order. It was interesting that I had placed my order within the first 2 hours of Apple taking orders, and I was told the WIFI/cellular would ship mid November, when I looked at the ship date at cancellation it was November 23. All of that might be of no interest, but what I will be curious to see from you guys who got the Mini, the totally blind users, what advantages are you seeing to having it and an IPhone? I have not discounted getting one, but I did think I would wait until I at least got to hold one before ordering. Thanks for comments on how you see yourself using the Mini along with your phone and maybe why a WIFI Mini has advantages over a WIFI Touch. The best! I use Carbonite and think that it is both very good and accessible. I am unsure about why someone thought it less so on the Mac, I use it on the Mac and cannot find a single thing that does not work well on that interface with Voice Over. Its effectively $5 a month to protect as much data as you can squeeze onto as many internal drives as you have within your machine… Options exist to add external drives etc. I have close to 500Gb backed up with it, and its fantastic peace of mind. You can also access your files when out and about, and changes made allegedly work their way back to your machine, although I've not tried this. RE: Carbonite
Hi Christine, While storage has become very inexpensive, it still does cost money and I believe Carbonite simply does not want to offer everybody to back up their external drives for the same cost. It's easy nowadays to buy a 3 Tb drive or even a network attached storage enclosure which can hold 2 or 4 massive drives. People fill them with movies, music and pictures and there is just no way any company could back that all up for probably tens of thousands of customers for $5 a months. Re: Carbonite
Personally, I feel that $5 a month for everything you can squeeze onto as many internal drives as you can fit in your machine is very, very good value indeed. Myself I do not use external drives, I do have a NAS which contains my movies etc, but I just have that set to double disk redundancy and prey it never catches fire etc. It cannot be stolen at all easily as it is in a secure location. Type il and then choose Illinois from the list of states. 2. Type Chic and then choose Chicago from the list. 3. Type kees and then choose Keester Ave from the list. Note that I didn't suggest you type N or S. In short, for the most part don't use the cardinal directions of an address when inputting into Navigon. There are exceptions, but 95% of the time you leave them out. 4. Now type 5221 and you will see in the list of choices. If thare choices with North or South as part of the address, they will display here along with the correct zip code. I'd be happy to demo this on an audio podcast if requested. -- Raul A. How can I simply put in a street and address and expect it to be found. I mean, I am taking the information right from a newspaper, etc., so you would expect something close to that should be found. How does Navigon even know there is no 1492 Columbus street, and maybe there is not but there is 1527 Columbus. The one other thing I wish I could do with any navigation app would be get directions from one place I will be in the future to another. They all seem to want to take you from your current location or nothing. If anyone knows a way around this, I would appreciate it. Maybe someone familiar with navigation apps who is looking to do a podcast has just gotten an inspiration. It doesn't seem that sort of sharing goes on as much anymore. First it's the state, then the city. Don't use spaces. So for example, if you are looking for 5221 Keester Ave, Chicago IL 60638 you would do the following. 1. Will locking orientation affect only the home screen or apply to all apps? Have you found that it helps gesture accuracy to lock orientation? Thanks. And when you buy another playlist to play, do you keep those songs from it to add to your music collection, or again is it just something the app stores within itself? Finally, how would I play with others? I know you said you've never played but by yourself, but I thought maybe you could somehow play against people in the game center, or on Facebook? Are there other games that are accessible like this one? Thanks for all your help so far, Shane. If you have chosen to play using multiple choice the choices will go across your screen and you tap on the 1 you want. You get 10 questions. Re: O.t splitting vcf files
Ramy, I presume what you're trying to do is to transfer the contacts from your previous cell phone to your iPhone. Is this correct? I just accomplished this via iTunes, but had to come up with some tricks to get the contacts to install on to my iPhone via an iTunes sync. If you would, send me your specifics: - current device where your contacts reside - version of Windows (if you have a PC you can work with) - your PC-based e-mail client Here's what I did to get my contacts from my PC to my iPhone 5: - I'm running Windows Vista with a Contacts folder, this folder contains a number of individual contact files (i.e., my info is stored in a file named Bill Gallik.contact - here's what I did to trick iTunes into updating the iPhone contacts: - created a back-up folder for all the existing contact files. (named it Old-Contacts as a sibling folder to the original Contacts folder. - Moved all my contact files from Contacts to Old-Contacts - Went to the Old-Contacts folder and selected the contact files associated with folks I wanted in my iPhone contacts. - Copied those selected contact files to the Contacts folder. I'm not sure if I needed to do it this way, but I wanted to be sure that all *.contact files in the Contacts folder had an up-to-date time stamp to drive syncing. - With my iPhone plugged into the USB port on my PC, I opened the FILE menu in iTunes and selected the sync with %your iPhone% menu item (%your iPhone% is a symbolic name for, what else, whatever you've named your iPhone -- or any other iDevice for that matter) - Just followed the iTunes input sequence and waited for the iPhone contacts to be appropriately updated. One thing I wanted to be certain of was that all files in the Contacts folder on the PC had timestamps with basically right now for them. Whenever I've done this syncing in the past with different devices, it's been based on which file is newer. And, that the Contacts folder(on the PC) had a now timestamp would also indicate to the syncing procedure that any files sitting on the target device (iPhone in this case) that are not present on the PC folder are not wanted so should be deleted. It won't work as a braille display that way, but perhaps it could with a keyboard. Will try this later for fun and let you know. The Control key is the same on both Windows and mac, the Windows key equals the Options key and the Alt key equals the Command key. VoiceOver is Options and Control together, so that should work as Windows key plus control on the U2. It will be interesting to see how that does. As for the commands, I'm not sure of them all because documentation is poor for braille input anyway, and even worse for braille qwerty input, but the keys I've found to work for executing commands are a combination of a key on the keyboard and the fn key. Not sure if the windows key works for some commands or not. Honestly, I haven't played with itt all that much but I have played a bit with my u2 qwerty and iphone4s under ios6. But with respect to navigation equivalents and functionality equivalent to the space plus braille dot combinations, the response was basically vague. It is apparently hit and miss and doesn't make much sense, but they're working on it. I didn't get any specific examples. The controls on the display itself apparently work the same. RE: Netatmo Indoor/Outdoor Weather Station - update; this is a must-read
Hello Jorgen and List, I posted a couple of messages regarding a new indoor/outdoor weather station from Netatmo and the problems I am having to get it to connect to my WiFi. In his reply Jorgen said he also purchased this device and he was able to successfully connect it. What follows is an update, it’s a bit lengthy, but anybody who is even remotely interested in this should read it and monitor the list for additional posts from me or write to me directly because I can only say good things about the company despite the connection issues I am having. They have been awesome and deserve our support. The connection issue I have seems to be a problem specific to my router/WiFi setup although Netatmo agrees that this seems to be software related and that it is something they need to fix and I’d like to point out that I never had problems connecting anything else to my WiFi from my Radio Thermostats to my iPhone and an HP wireless printer. I use identical VPN (virtual private networking) routers from Netgear both at home and at my business. These routers are about 10 or 11 years old and the only reason why I have not replaced them yet with newer routers that are capable of Gigabit speeds is because I really need that VPN tunnel as I sometimes work from home and while it’s a bit slower, this allows me to work as if I was on one of my computers at my store. I then have an Airport Express connected physically to each router both at work and at home. It is set to bridge mode which means it creates a WiFi network, but does not act as a DHCP client and it does no NAT (network address translation) as the router does that. Yesterday I took the weather station to our local store that sells Apple products, the sales person there plugged the USB cable into one of their Mac computers, we ran the wizard and it connected instantly and without any problem whatsoever to their WiFi—the entire process took 2 minutes. They are running an Airport Extreme, so also an Apple product, but it’s a WiFi capable router so no need for 2 separate devices. I think most people do have single unit WiFi capable routers these days and use an Airport Express at best to extend the network or use it for Airplay. I have actually now ordered 2 new Netgear FVS318N WiFi VPN routers which will still give me the VPN functionality, but also include 8 Gigabit ports and are WiFi capable. Netatmo is currently testing my setup with a separate router and Airport Express as WiFi access point to see if they can come up with an explanation why it won’t connect. Next I’d like to point out again that the setup wizard both on the computer and on the iPhone (you can use either one to connect the station to your WiFi) is inaccessible at t his point. But once it’s connected the app does work even though as Jorgen pointed out in his post it’s a bit cluttered and you can’t yet access minimum and maximum temperature readings. I do say “not yet” because after I emailed their support with my findings yesterday about the connection issue, I had an email back this morning which I would like to share here. I want to say that from day 1 they have replied always promptly, I asked some questions prior to ordering it regarding their return policy (it is 7 days) and each time I received an almost immediate reply except when it was a weekend. In my last email I emphasised the importance of accessibility again, offered to help if I could with regards to testing new releases if they would be willing to make Voiceover specific improvements and asked if a senior person in management or development could contact me and let me know if they would consider making accessibility improvements. Here is the reply I received this morning: From: Netatmo Support [mailto:contact-supp...@netatmo.com] Sent: Wednesday, November 14, 2012 6:05 AM To: siegh...@live.ca Cc: 'Laura | Netatmo'; 'Carlos Raventos' Subject: RE: WiFi connection problem Hi, Thanks again for your patience. We now understand better your network configuration. We are currently setting up a similar setting here (with the device acting as a router separated from the wifi access point) to reproduce the issue. As your try at the Apple store shows, the issue looks software so if we can manage to reproduce it, we will fix it. As far as the 7 days return period is concerned, we agree to extend it to any necessary time that we will need to find fix this Wifi interworking issue. The issue clearly seems to lay on our side so that’s the least we can do… Concerning the accessibility of our App, we have discussed internally and have decided to enhance our support of voiceover by adding within the App what’s necessary to have a good voiceover user experience. Those enhancement will probably not be in the next release of our App but in the one after (probably in a month or so). Carlos, here in copy, will send you a “testflightapp” invitation. Re: braille sense u2 qwerty with iPhone?
Scott, According to Jenny at Hims, you should be able to enter text into edit fields without difficulty if you set your u2 to grade 1. Leave it on grade 2, and you could have issues with the back translation of letters into words, as h for have etc. As for function key plus letter combinations to do what you can do with braille dots plus space, all Jenny said was that they know it doesn't make sense, and they're working on it. But she didn't give me any documentation regarding what actually does work at this time in that regard. Good luck. I didn't even have to hit F6, after clickin settings, I did the shift tab and then was able to arrow down to the buttons. I tried tabbing after doing the shift tab, but that didn't work so I had to just arrow down to get to those buttons. Re: braille sense u2 qwerty with iPhone?
Hi marry. Hmm. When I pair the u2 with my iPhone, pressing letters does nothing. Same with jkl and sdf. I'll have to call her and see what I'm doing wrong. Will try rebooting the phone before I do it next time. Thank you for the follow-up! But she didn't give me any documentation regarding what actually does work at this time in that regard. Good luck. Braille Sense u2 QWERTY with iDevices
HI all. SO I rebooted both the phone and Braille Sense, and am now able to type using the standard keyboard. It's also importnat to note, as was done earlier on one list, that you must have contractions turned off on the iDevice. However, the backspace key and enter key do not work. Also, the function key with H, instead of space with H, will actually go in to the app switcher. I thought that perhaps this meant some consistency in the sense that you could sort of use the function key in place of the spacebar, but no. When I press function with M, it mutes speech like other wireless keyboards do when using the command VO plus M, but it also activates the home button. Function with S also activates the home button, after briefly taking you up to the status bar. The scrol buttons work as they should, but instead of the left and right arrows moveing across the screen, they actually activate the current rotor setting. Instead, the up and down arrow keys move left to right across the screen. Hope this info is helpful, Scott -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Another question on Trivia Tunes and a Game Center quiry
Hi All, Thanks to Roger for his assistance so far. So with Trivia Tunes, how do you play other players other than just yourself? Also how or can it be played through Facebook and the Game Center? I'd like to be able to challenge other people like I see people do with Songpop. Secondly, how is the Game Center used? Lastly, do any of you have a list of games that are accessible and that are centered around music games, racing or wrestling, and just fun games in general? Thanks for any and all feedback, Shane. Re: searching in ooTunes tuneInRadio
Hi, that is what I used to think, however I cannot find it anymore. I just tried with the app, slowly moving my finger down from car mode, and there is nothing between car mode and local radio. Re: Checkbook app
Yes, I do have the mobile apps for my banks. I decided to try the mint.com app. I had read about it on applevis. It was said to be partly not accessible because you couldn't see your list of transactions. As of now, however, I can find my transactions; I have to click on places within the screen that make a voiceover sound but don't say anything. By doing this, I can find all my transactions. The parts for adding bank accounts and seeing your balances are accessible without having to do anything that seems strange. It was free so I thought it was worth a try. I also like the fact that when you logout it removes the data from your device. It also sends alerts to your email address which means you can see them on your device and your computer via email. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. RE: Braille Sense u2 QWERTY with iDevices
So, how do you put in a hard return when writing in a document, or Email, etc? Richard -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Scott Davert Sent: Wednesday, November 14, 2012 12:28 PM To: viphone Subject: Braille Sense u2 QWERTY with iDevices HI all. Hope this info is helpful, Scott -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. mint.com for checkbook, keeping track of your accounts, etc.
i've only just begun to play with this app but if you don't mind playing with it, it really is a good app and quite useable though not what one would call accessible. Not only are buttons not labelled - actually most of the buttons you can hear labels for are labeled but you won't hear button so you have to figure out that they can be pressed - but there are many places where you don't even find a button but just know something is there because you hear a sound as you come to it. This may be easier to detect with a keyboard but I wouldn't necessarily think one couldn't do this without one. It shows all your balances and you can find the transactions. You can budget and add transactions. You get email warnings though it's not clear to me if mint.com issues these on some basis or if they are tied in with the alerts on your accounts. It probably does more that I haven't discovered yet. Again, if you use this you will have to play with it but as far as I'm concerned it's a keeper. It isn't really exactly what I'd call a checkbook app but in some ways it's better and really is just what I wanted. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer. If like OS X, IOS is based on Unix at it's core, it is probably much safer than most versions of Windows. At 10:36 PM 11/14/2012, you wrote: Yes it is. Hi. the app seems to crash on me if i try to post to twitter etc. has anyone else had this experience? So with Trivia Tunes, how do you play other players other than just yourself? Also how or can it be played through Facebook and the Game Center? I'd like to be able to challenge other people like I see people do with Songpop. Secondly, how is the Game Center used? Lastly, do any of you have a list of games that are accessible and that are centered around music games, racing or wrestling, and just fun games in general? Thanks for any and all feedback, Shane. What happens if you try downloading a BARD book to an i-device?
I wondered if anybody had tried downloading a BARD book to an i-device? I realize that one can't read them on an i-device at this point, but I wondered (1) does the download result in a file on the iPhone or not? (2) if the file downloads, is there a way of finding out where it is on the iPhone?; and (3) can the file then be transfered somewhow to a computer or reading card or device? I was just curious as to whether anybody had tried this. -- Cheryl May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to You, Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.
