Re: Thoughts on getting an iPad Mini and other carriers
1, wifi and cellular is about $100 more, or it is over here. 2, audio and video takes up space, buy the biggest you can, memory goes up in $100 stages. 3, don't know about your carriers, but we're at cross purposes. If you don't have a cable link with a wifi router, it eliminates you having a wifi version (not that you can get rid of it), but would have to look for wifi hotspot type service, or use some kindof data plan. YOu can get data only cellular simms for them. You'd need to ask around on pricing of those, we work that all so different over here. Pity you hadn't got a cable connection at home, how do you get TV? it's the same thing. TV/Broadband packages are eubiquitous! Then a cheap wifi router would be a possibility and skip the additional cost of a cellular model, unless you really want to take it out and still browse; and it still doesn't eliminate the hotspot market either. Your own domestic wifi router would allow you to use all the iOs things through it,... we do do that here. R. - Original Message - From: Wayne Merritt wcmerr...@gmail.com To: viphone viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, July 22, 2013 11:01 PM Subject: Thoughts on getting an iPad Mini and other carriers Greetings. My wife and I are considering getting an iPad Mini. I have the following questions for those that have an iPad and/or an iPad Mini: 1. Is there a difference in price between the iPad Mini with wifi and the one with wifi/cellular connection? 2. What size did you get? We are looking at a 16 GB model, and we will be using it for listening to Audible books, playing games, and using other apps. My wife can see so she wants it for the larger screen. We will keep our iPhones. 3. If we get an ATT iPad Mini, will that extend our current mobile share data plans? Also, can we take our iPad Mini to another carrier? I saw several different models of iPad Minis for all of the major U.S. carriers. I wouldn't think it would make a difference which one you get, since the iPhone uses specific frequencies and the iPads don't. We are looking at switching to Sprint next year when our current contracts run out. We don't have wifi or Internet at home, so we were thinking of getting the wifi only iPad Mini. I can also see advantages of having a wifi/data plan model. Any and all thoughts are appreciated. The iPod 5th gen and the iPod Touch are the same. It's just how one calls the same device. As for me I go for the official name from Apple, iPod Touch 5th generation. Hi all, I ended up getting the mofy juice external battery pack for now. (not the case) How long does it take the battery itself to charge via the computer? RE: two ipod questions please
Hello Rex, The iPod Fifth Gen is the iPod Touch Fifth Gen. If you are looking to buy an iPod Touch, do yourself a favour and do not buy a Fourth Gen because the Fifth Gen which was released last October is leagues above the Fourth Gen: Much better camera much faster processor Dual band WiFi it has SIRI It has the new Lightning connecto It has the larger 4 inch screen yet it is super thin and light. Lastly, and very importantly, it is the only iPod Touch which you can upgrade to iOS 7 when it is released in September. Yes, you can read text and PDF files although you may require some apps to do so, some of which are free and some of which are not. Dropbox and iBooks are free and you can read text files in Dropbox and PDF files you can read in Dropbox or iBooks. There are also apps like Voice Dream Reader which can read text files, PDF files, Word documents and many other files with a high quality voice. This app you would have to buy and then you have to buy voices separately, most are $1.99 and a few are $2.99. The app store link where you can read more about Voice Dream Reader is as follows: https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/voice-dream-reader-text-to/id496177674?mt=8 Regards, Sieghard From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of rex wisdom Sent: Tuesday, July 23, 2013 12:17 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: two ipod questions please What are the differences between the ipod 5th gen and the ipod touch? RE: question about the life proof case for the iPhone 5
Hi all, I'm happy to say I bought the case. My Dad and I opened it up and had a look, and the case already had a screw at the bottom. I assume that's the one to seal the headphone jack? There was another screw attached to a cable with what looked like a headphone plug at one end. I'm sure there is a diagram in the manual so Dad will probably see how this works and can show me, but thought I'd ask on here as well, how does this second screw and cable work? RE: Calls on Facebook
Hello Eric, This past weekend, I received a face time call from my son diployed overseas. I didn't get to my phone on time. Re: Audyssey Media Player app for headphone sound optimization is free this week (July 22, 2013)
I installed the app and after a couple tries I got it to recognize my Bose AE 2 headphones. The resulting sound was at about half the volume of using the straight music app. The sound was more like much lower quality headphones. It gave the music a tinny sound and a little distorted. I did not have the volume up very high either. At this point, I would say it isn't a very useful app. I tried it with some classical music, some Judy Collins, the musical Wicked, and some folk music. Later, Richard (Sent from Richard's iPod Touch 5th gen) On Jul 22, 2013, at 10:10 PM, Esther mori...@mac.com wrote: Hi All, The Audyssey Media Player app has gone free for this week. This is an app that optimizes the sound balance for your headphones (mainly to get better sound quality for higher end headphones), based on the specific performance profiles of different models. It's been well reviewed, and it seems partially usable with VoiceOver, but the individual customization controls, beyond the basic headset specific settings don't seem to be accessible, I was wondering whether people could try this out and report their impressions: whether they think this improved their listening experience, and what model of headset they used with the app. • Audyssey Media Player (free, was $0.99) by Audyssey Laboratories https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/audyssey-media-player/id569331902?mt=8 Here's a bit of background. Audyssey Laboratories uses information on the response characteristics of a number of headsets. There's an online database of the individual headset profiles included in this app: http://www.amp.audyssey.com/pick When you launch the app you select the headset you wish to apply equilization adjustment for. First you select the manufacturer's brand, and then you select the model, assuming that you find your headset model listed. For example, I tried the profile for the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro. Annoyingly, after selecting a headset, I couldn't seem to turn on the headset profile. VoiceOver would announce On and Off, but I couldn't seemingly set things to On in the app. The way I got the settings applied was by removing the app from the App Switcher window, and then relaunching it again with headphones connected. At that point an alert window came up announcing Headphones Detected, Are these the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro that you currently have selected? The button options were Yes, use these, Choose New Headphones and Turn Off Audyssey Technology. Double tapping Yes, use these, seemed to activate the headset profile use. You can try playing music tracks from your iTunes library library. The player controls for the track are at the bottom of the screen (buttons for previous track, play/pause, and next track, with a volume slider below). Double tapping a button that covers most of the screen shows or hides the information on track name and artist, time since start and to end of track, and repeat loop and shuffle controls, just above the player controls. You should be able to access custom controls for the app by double tapping the Audyssey button switched button at the top of the screen, just below the time on the status menu. Here the name of your selected headset gets announced, and there is an Audyssey Options Button that takes you to the Settings screen. However, double tapping Your Sound (the second entry) for customizing your sound, brings up controls that VoiceOver can't seem to interact with. Anyway, I'd be curious whether people find these app settings improve their listening experience, even without the further customization options. Also, if there's a way to get the custom controls working, or particular headsets that sound better, it would be interesting to know. This app has gone free for this week, only. There's some relation between the app developers and the Songza app, too. HTH. Cheers, Esther -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Accessibility/readability of google books
When I refer here, in the subject line, to accessibility or readability of Google books, I do not mean Google play books or any other related e-books. Google books seem to be set and I believe are either pictorial representations/graphical representations of the books and therefore are unreadable to screen readers such as voice-over. I have found a book I am desperately seeking but it is only available on Google books, andnot in any other format. Before I give up on it, I wanted to see if anybody has had any experiences of being able to read these books? Often, you canget a Previous page button and next page button but it does not seem to speak any of the actual text on the pages. This is my experience both with jawsand with VO on my iPhone. I just thought I'd check to see if anybody has had any different experiences. Thanks in advance. Hi, I have been using Dijit for about 9 months and find it extremely helpful. My provider is Time Warner and Dijit will list most of the channels. Word processor app comparison
I did some Voice over compatibility testing of a few word processor apps lately. I didn't use any of the apps extensively, but I did find out some useful information. Here are my results. Disclaimer: i did not test every app. Mostly free ones and a couple i got when they went free on a sale. List of apps: Google drive. Smart office 2 Ux write Cloud on Drop box Office plus Pages Google drive (official app) -The google drive app of course connects to your google account, but doesn't support other cloud services. You can view almost any file type in your Drive. However, you can only create or edit google documents and google spreadsheets. -The app worked well with voice over, possibly the best. Documents worked fine with VO on most of the apps i tested. Google drive is one of them, which means you can easily do simple formatting like italics and underlining, change fonts, and change the page alignment. Google spreadsheets worked best with voice over because you could access each individual cell, which voice over identified without a hitch. In my beef testing, this was the only app to support this much appreciated feature. However, there is one major drawback. Because the app doesn't use on-device files, unless you specifically make each file available for offline use, you cannot view non-google files without an Internet connection. What files i could view could not be edited, and i could not make any new files offline. Smart office 2 -Currently, This app is completely inaccessible with VO. However, if you have vision, it works great. Note: if you use 2 step verification on google drive, you need an application specific password. -the app allows for the creation of various file types: .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, and .pptx. -the app allows you to view and edit existing files in cloud services like Dropbox, box, and google drive. The feature set is impressive, with image insertion, as well as formatting like color font, background color, and bullets. -you can also create local files for offline use. These files can later be copied or moved to your cloud service of choice. -this app is one f the best i have seen. Hopefully, the developer will update the app with voice over accessibility. So far, that is the only fault i have seen with it. Ux write (as well as many document creators) -Ux write is a simple .doc, .docx, and HTML file creator. However, it is limited to these file types. That being said, the app is very VO friendly. It is also usually a paid app (although it has gone free before -what sets ux write apart is its rich feature set. Outlining, in-text reference point support, figure and table support, photo insertion, etc. Cloud on -Cloud on is an account based application. This means you sign up for an account, then sync any of several cloud services like Dropbox and google drive. The benefit here is that you don't have to keep reentering your account credentials every time you use or download the app. -However, the app is still pretty sluggish compared to the competition. Even worse, the app is not VO accessible. It spoke some things, but nothing relevant. Not even in a document. I would not recommend this app. Dropbox -this app is accessible, but only seems to allow for file viewing. You cannot create or edit anything in my experience. Office plus -Although this app is free, you can only save text files without making an in-app purchase ($2-6). I dont like this business model because you will not likely ever get these features for free, unlike smart office, which occasionally offers the app for free. If you choose to purchase this app: -This app performed well. It has several features in its document maker. You can undo and redo, color text, change alignment, insert pictures from your camera roll and pre-defines shapes, use bullets and numbering, and more. -The spreadsheet maker was partially accessible. There is a text box where you can select which cell or text box you want to edit, and another box for editing its contents. However, I could not touch or select data boxes, and i could not move in the spreadsheet using voice over. -the PowerPoint maker was inaccessible. I could edit the first slide, but I could not select a template for a new slide, rendering this portion of the app inaccessible. -the app supports syncing with google drive, Dropbox, -because this app uses local documents created and stored offline and on your phone, this app works well if you don't have an Internet connection. -you can create things offline in the local folder, then copy or move them to your cloud service of choice later (i suggest this) -office plus also supports folders!! -office plus is fairly similar to smart office 2, except office plus is a bit faster -if you have vision, this app seems to require less zooming than smart office 2. Pages -My Bestfriend who is completely blind uses the official Pages app for most of her work,

Re: two ipod questions please
Another important difference to me regarding the iPod Touch 4th gen and 5th Gen is the sound. The 5th gen has much better sound quality. The 4th Gen’s speaker is smaller and it sounds very tinny sounding. When I had both in hand, there was definitly a big difference. The 5th Gen, in my opinion, is way superior over the 4th Gen. Hi Shirley, Double tap the button that says Earpiece or, if you have a headset plugged in, it will say Headset. As soon as you do the call will switch to Speakerphone and the button will now turn into a Speakerphone button. If you double tap it again the call will revert back to the earpiece (or headset). The button is the very left button in that row of 4 or 5 buttons right above the End Call button which is first right above the home key. Re: Calendar Versus Reminder
I think notes are for things like: Don't forget to clean the garage. Your brother is coming to town for a visit in 3 months so make sure the dog house is cleaned out. The calendar is for things like: Doctor's appointment on July 23, 2013. Board of directors meeting on August 6th 2013. Etc. In general, notes are tasks which need doing but are not time sensitive. RE: StandScan Pro with iPhone 4 and prizmo.
Hi Jared, Most people get greatly improved results with the Standscan when it comes to OCR with apps like Prizmo and Text Grabber. The Standscan has been discussed extensively back in March and given the unique name a search in the archives for Standscan should allow you to easily find these threads. There is a significant difference between the 5 MP camera of the iPhone 4 and the 8 MP camera of the 4S and 5, but the more steady platform of the Standscan along with the good lighting when you use the LED lights should give you pretty good results even with an ipPhone 4. For what it's worth, I don't have a wifi router or Cable/digital TV service. Re: Calendar Versus Reminder
I use the calendar for everything as well. I trained a consumer recently on using the reminders app and I can see uses for that too. However, I use the calendar to remind myself of pending appointments, bills that are paid the same date every month, to give my guide dog her monthly meds, the monthly payday, and have used it to remind me of TV shows or even the weekly NFL games that I wanted to watch. And the list goes on. It is all about what is important to you and how you want to keep track of those events/things. I like the calendar since I can set an appointment for 1:00 but get a default reminder 15 minutes before it. I have also scheduled a few appointments and set the reminder to occur a day ahead of time, to remind me to fast for the next day's doctor's appointment where they will take my blood. As I say, the list is endless. Regards, Wayne Merritt On 7/23/13, Alan Paganelli alanandsuza...@earthlink.net wrote: I think notes are for things like: Don't forget to clean the garage. Re: StandScan Pro with iPhone 4 and prizmo.
Hello, I am using the SandScan Pro with both Prizmo and Text Grabber. It depends on the task at hand which OCR app I use. I have an iPhone 4 and the results are great. I would think that the camera on the iPhone 5 would give more accurate results, but I have no complaints. Like the last post, the combination of the OCR apps and the StandScan Pro have been discussed on this list extensively, so check the archives. Good luck. Specific GPS app advice
Hi all, I know this topic has been covered quite a lot recently but I am keen to get people's views on my specific requirements. I find myself in a position where I want to buy a navigation app and thanks to a gift have £25 on my itunes account. I could add to this a little but would rather not. So my requirements are as follows. I am looking for :- A walking turn by turn spoken navigation app. Must work well with voiceover (obviously) on an iPhone 4 Must work in UK I basically want it to get me from A to B walking , nothing fancy, don't need to know that I am passing the massage parlour or a kebab house just get me to where I want to go. :) I have been considering Navigon at the moment but was concerned that some issues were raised with version 2 regards performance on the iPhone 4 and didn't know whether these had been resolved in version 2.5. I am keen to hear views of those that have bought apps that fall into my specific requirements. Many thanks Paul -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. One other thing I'd like to point out though is the fact that if you want the case to be fully waterproof yet you may not want to use it with a headset all the time, it is necessary to always carry that little screw-in plug with you since simply unplugging the headset will maintain water proof status, but there will be no Voiceover because iOS still thinks a headset is plugged in. You would have to unscrew and remove the entire adapter which then opens up the hole for the headset and then screw in the little plug. Re: StandScan Pro with iPhone 4 and prizmo.
I will echo what Eileen has said. I use an iPhone 4, Stand Scan Pro, and, Prizmo and Text Grabber and get very good results with this combination. Unless you are scanning some unusual items, you should get decent results, even with the iPhone 4. I plan to replace my 4 this Fall with the new iPhone model, or the 5. I am very curious to see how much different the results might be with the better camera. Re: Specific GPS app advice
Since I don't live in the UK, you will need to do some checking. I would look at the new Google Maps app, which is quite VoiceOver usable. It will give you good turn by turn directions. It is free, so you could then buy Blind Square which will give you information about intersections. You can filter the announcements so it only announces intersections and not all the businesses you are walking by. It seems to me that some UK residents have use Blind Square successfully. It is $19.99 in the U.S., so your 25 pounds will cover it and more. Re: Audyssey Media Player app for headphone sound optimization is free this week (July 22, 2013)
Hi Richard, Thanks for the feedback. I also experienced a drop in volume within the Audyssey Media Player app after making the adjustment. The volume slider when you play tracks within the app has a separate level setting from the iPhone volume controls, so I just adjusted this up using the slider below the player controls in order to compare the sound quality. (It's a pain not to simply be able to access the controls with VoiceOver to toggle this on and off within the app.) With the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones, after adjusting volume so that I could do a reasonable assessment, I'd say that the Audyssey Media Player app gave me a small improvement with slightly more responsive bass. The majority of the reviews I've read for this app report improvements. Some users detail improvements (from small to more substantial) in most of their headphones but not others (e.g. one user said he tried it with 5 headphones, with improvements, and 1 where he thought the adjustment made things worse). The usual complaint was that not all headset profiles were covered, and if you applied a setting that wasn't designed for your headphones, especially if you were using high performance headphones, you'd degrade your listening experience. The general reviews and ratings for this app at external sites seemed positive and widespread enough that it seemed worth having people try this out, especially since I think this app is only going to be free for a single week, based on a promotion that is advertised on Songza's web site. That's also why I provided the information on how to get this turned on (despite the accessibility issues) in my first post. Alternative recording apps?
Hello everyone, this is Chris here. Please can you suggest alternative recording apps? What I am looking for is an app that behaves similar to Dropvox, except the ability to record without an internet connection would just be fantastic. Also, please only try to suggest apps that do not force VoiceOver to go through the earpiece like Dropvox doesn't. I'm asking this as I was going to do my third part of my series on MBraille tonight, but had to let you all down due to stormy weather we have in the Uk, which temporarily took my broadband offline for a few hours. This is also why I would like apps to not force VoiceOver to go through the earpiece? After all, how can I demonstrate apps for the iPhone if that was to happen? I can't! Re: Voice Dream reader and zipped files
Hi, Sandy. If I may ask, can you unzip a file in one of the zip packages for the iPhone and then try to open the contents in VoiceDream Reader? The point is to determine that the reader is failing at the decompression/import stage or at the stage of actually loading the book contents. Before doing so, however, you may want to be sure the file is a Daisy book. As I understand it, and I would appreciate correction if I'm wrong, VoiceDream Reader can only open ZIP files in which text-based Daisy books live. If you are using such a file, try renaming it to .daisy and accessing it, once more, with VDR. Sometimes the .daisy extension works when the .zip extension doesn't. Re: Specific GPS app advice
Your two options are Navigon and TomTom, the UK versions of both apps. As to price, you will need to check the App Store. The price can change at any time, so the App Store is the only way to know when you are actually purchasing the app. The majority of blind people on this list prefer Navigon. I actually prefer, and more often use, TomTom. I like its onscreen layout and presentation of information better. Re: Voice Dream reader and zipped files
Hi aman, These tend to be text files. Yes, I can unzip them using Tyler, however, I am surprised that voice dream shows up in the open in options even though these files can't be opened there. Now that you tell me that daisy books can be opened, things are a little clearer. Thanks, Sandy Sent from my iPhone On 23 Jul 2013, at 20:27, Aman Singer aman.sin...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, Sandy. This is a viable option if you have a data plan and receive mobile data in the areas you will be walking. If you require onboard maps, Navigon and TomTom (UK versions) are your options. You can filter the announcements so it only announces intersections and not all the businesses you are walking by. It seems to me that some UK residents have use Blind Square successfully. Re: Voice Dream reader and zipped files
Hi, Sandy. Remember that the open in on iOS, and indeed on Windows as well, is based on the file's extension and possibly, in some cases, on the file's MIME type. To programs using these identifiers, a zip file is a zip file. VDR registered as being able to open zip files. As I said earlier, I've heard that the author used .daisy, but that wouldn't help very much in many cases because few other providers of daisy books use that extension on the web. I hope that's of use. Aman On 7/23/13, Sandratomkins sandratomk...@googlemail.com wrote: Hi aman, These tend to be text files. Is it worth spending the money to upgrade to the paid version? Is the classic more accurate than the lite? iPad case with built-in bluetooth keyboard for sale
Hi all. I have permission from Raul to post for sale items on this list. Please email me off list at harb...@gmail.com if you have any questions or are interested in this item. I just got in one of the coolest items I have ever had for sale. It is a leather type Apple iPad case with a built-in keyboard. We all know how annoying touch typing can be sometimes and typing on an iPad is even worse than an iPhone. Sure there are Bluetooth keyboards out there but then you have to carry them around with you. This case is perfect because everything is built-in. It is an iPad leather type case that holds your iPad and also has a built-in Bluetooth keyboard. Works for iPad 2 or later. The case closes with a magnetic flap. Very cool! These are brand new. Price is $25 plus shipping. Email me at harb...@gmail.com if interested. These won't last long! Brent Harbolt -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Questions About Skype
Okay, I admit to being a dinosaur and never really using Skype. But I do have it loaded on my Windows XP desktop (which doesn't have a camera) but since I get unlimited long distance with my home phone, I've never used it. I know many on this list use it since I see it mentioned fairly often. How accessible is the iPhone Skype app? Does it work well with VoiceOver? I've already got a free Skype account but before loading the app on my iPhone 5, I want to make sure it's accessible. Do you need a paid plan with Skype to really make good use of it? I know this depends on what the uses are which I assume will be phone calls with and without video. Thanks in advance for any help y'all can offer. Re: Questions About Skype
Yes, the app is accessible with VoiceOver. This explains why it's discussed so much on this list! :-) If you just want to set up calls, video and chats between other Skype users, you don't need a paid plan. If you want a number associated with it, and you want to call and receive calls from others outside of Skype then you'll need a paid plan. On 07/23/2013 05:42 PM, Alan Lemly wrote: Okay, I admit to being a dinosaur and never really using Skype. I can't! Strange Issue with Updating Apps
I am experiencing a very strange issue. The App Store shows that Twitter needs to be updated. However, when I put the update all button, it says it is installing but nothing else happens. Re: undoing a restriction
If you've forgotten your restrictions passcode and you want to modify your settings, you'll unfortunately have to restore the iPhone in iTunes and set it up as a new device. Even restoring from a backup will not disable the restrictions passcode. If you have a backup taken from before you enabled restrictions, you could restore from that one. Note that the same also applies if you've turned on encryption for backups and can't remember the password. Sorry for the bad news. Re: Question about OOTunes and Tunein Radio
If you have a user account with TuneIn, then all of your Favorite stations will be available to you once you sign in on your new device. Any stations that you added to your Favorites before signing in will also be added to your current Favorites list. If you do not have a TuneIn account, then all your Favorites were saved on the actual device so there is no way to access them outside of the device. If you still have access to your old device and you don't have a TuneIn user account, all you need to do is create an account on tunein.com and sign into TuneIn on your old phone once. When you sign in to your account on your new device, all your Favorite stations will be there! On Wednesday, July 17, 2013 6:07:52 PM UTC-7, Marquito wrote: Hi folks, how are you doing? Re: Voice Dream reader and zipped files
Hi Sandy, The developer of Voice Dream is amazingly responsive. I'll bet he would look into making his app able to unzip files that only contain a text file, or group of text files. If I may ask, can you unzip a file in one of the zip packages for the iPhone and then try to open the contents in VoiceDream Reader? Before doing so, however, you may want to be sure the file is a Daisy book. As I understand it, and I would appreciate correction if I'm wrong, VoiceDream Reader can only open ZIP files in which text-based Daisy books live. If you are using such a file, try renaming it to .daisy and accessing it, once more, with VDR. Sometimes the .daisy extension works when the .zip extension doesn't. RE: Can I put IPhone Apps on A thumb Drive? What folder in iTunes would I Copy them into?
Hi Wren, You can look for the .ipa files in your iTunes library and copy them to another place for safe keeping. Then (if you need to copy them back to your iTunes library, on a new computer or if you undergo Windows re-installation for example) you can add them from the iTunes file menu. life proof case speaker on phone
Hi all, One interesting thing I noticed about the life proof case, The speaker is on the bottom of the phone right? But since putting it in the life proof case, the speaker appears to be on the back. There is a little square window on the back of the case and I can hear the sound loudest from there and feel the vibration of sound. What's going on here? Re: Can I put IPhone Apps on A thumb Drive? What folder in iTunes would I Copy them into?
You'll find the apps in a folder call Mobile Applications within the iTunes Media folder which in turn is in the iTunes folder. When transferring them back you can just paste them back into the Add to iTunes Automatically folder which is also within the iTunes Media folder. This is not really necessary, if the worst happened and your computer died, them you'd be able to re-download all the apps again. For example if you have your phone set to back up via iCloud, you can restore a new phone from this backup and not use the computer at all. However, one good reason to backup the applications in a separate location though is to allow you to retain an old version of the apps. For example, if a particular app is updated by the developer and made inaccessible, you can roll back the version of the installed app to the prior one.
