RE: Potential bug when creating a new contact from an unknown caller

2020-04-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I had noticed this too, but this in fact has been a bug if you want to call it
that for years off and on. The fact is that as long as you know it double
tapping first on last name and starting there, then go to first name and other
fields becomes second nature and as far as bugs go it’s so minor that for me
it’s not worth the time it takes to write an email about it. I am not saying
those who find it more annoying shouldn’t write that email, but to me it simply
makes no difference if I first enter the first name or the last name.

I have found that if I go first to last name after selecting create new
contact, I can enter the last name then go back to the first name field enter
that, and then hit done.
If that isn't working, then definitely contact Apple.

I have signed up with uber eats. It asked me for my phone number and I
discovered it didn’t want our landline but a number it could text to. Ok, so I
gave it our cell number and it sent the 4-digit code which I entered—well and
good. However the trouble comes now. When I launch the app on my iphone 7 or
ipad, it wants my cell number every time and wants to send a new code. The
inconvenience comes because of this. The device I received the code on is not
the device I intend to order on. My iphone is not hooked to a cell account and
we are using a blindshell phone as our cell phone now and it doesn’t support
apps. The desktop interface seems to work ok but I haven’t delved much into the
guts of it yet. Am I doing something wrong?

RE: Annoying apple music issue

2020-04-29 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Fanus,

A subscription is not required to purchase either individual songs or entire
albums from Amazon.com

I find that the prices of individual titles are identical to iTunes. Album
prices are usually comparable, also.

To be clear, I download my music via Internet Explorer version 11, on a Windows
7 32-bit PC.

I think Amazon offers some kind of desktop music download app but I found it
extremely difficult to use with Jaws; however, this was some years ago and the
desktop app may have improved since then.

When it is all said and done, while I purchase all of my music from Amazon.com,
I manage that content in iTunes for Windows.

Hello Richard, Fanus, and Everyone,

Richard, I love your phrase, “tagging hell.” That is exactly how I view the
purchasing of iTunes music.

Earlier today, I decided to buy a new album. For less than a nanno-second I
considered purchasing it from iTunes, then I remembered all of the problems I
have encountered, en the past, after having done so; some that you described
very eloquently, Richard, and some even more daunting issues, that continue to
occur, with those long ago purchased tracks.

I only purchase music from Amazon, via my web browser, on my Windows PC.

The process is simple, straight-forward, and fast.

For example, when purchasing an album on my PC, the broad strokes are:

1.
Go to Amazon.com and find the album. Select the album to display the various
formats, MP3, CD, Vinyl, etc. Along with each format, you will see the
purchase price.

2.
Select your format.

3.
Purchase the Album.

4.
Select Download purchase. The album will be downloaded to your PC in a Zip
file.

5.
Unzip the file and you will see all of the album titles.

Now here is what I do to get my newly purchased album into iTunes; again the
broad strokes, only.

6.
Open iTunes for Windows.

7.
Add all of the album titles to my iTunes Library, simultaneously.

8.
Select all of the newly purchased album titles and select New Playlist.

9.
Give the Playlist the same name of the Album.

10.
Sync the new playlist to my iOS device.

Again, just the broad strokes but, all things being equal, given that I’ve been
using this method for about 7 years or so, it takes me less than 15 minutes to
go from purchase to syncing songs to my iOS device.

Mark

Welcome to the tagging hell that is classical music, as well as others, but
classical is the worst.
Since the internal tags of classical music often has different artists on some
tracks, or different conductors, orchestras, etc., it gets crazy making.
But, look for a folder called Compilations.
Most of the time, these albums are marked as compilations so they will show up
by either the album name, or conductor.
The tracks will also be scattered into different subfolders, but at least in
the compilations folder they should be all together.

I did buy it, it's a rather expensive app as apps go, $17.99 US and I think it
was $24.99 Canadian for the lifetime purchase. You can try it out for free for
14 days and there is a $0.99 US monthly subscription and a $5.99 annual
subscription.

If you continue to use it in "free" mode it will read the two lowest bills of
each currencies, here in Canada that means it would read $5 and $10 bills since
we don't have $1 bills any more. But our bills are all made from a polymer
matand are marked with braille so usually it's easier to just check them this
way. Sometimes if I have a larger deposit at my store with 20 or 30 bills I may
use Cash Reader since it's faster especially if they aren't sorted so the
braille markings are all facing the same way and I have to look for them.

Cash Reader is in my opinion even more fast and accurate than Money Reader was
and it even read bills which were folded in half and then in half again.

The other advantage (for some at least) is that if you want the feedback
silently or if you are deaf-blind ,Cash Reader can also provide the
identification with vibrations.

As Richard said, it's primary appeal is in how many currencies it supports. It
is not only limited to the major currencies of the western world like USD, CAD,
Euro, AUD, NZD and so on, but it literally can read dozens and dozens of
currencies including a ton of Asian currencies like Philippine Pesos, Thai
Baht, Indian Rupees as well as pretty much any of the South American
currencies, a ton of African currencies and much more. They update quite often
and each time more currencies are added, I actually

just checked the app store description and while they don't say the total
number, they do provide a list and I have put the link for the app below for
those who want to check it out:

Subject: trouble with the uber eats app

Found The settings for what I want the phone to do when it's locked. Thank you

Things on the new photo working much better. And when I said that the screen
wasn't all that sensitive the home button certainly is but I think there was
all kinds of stuff going on in the background. Tweak the settings trying to
turn as much off as I can. Not sure why the phone sounds like it's quivering
sometimes when I hold it and move it around. Not sure if it's switching from
something like portrait to landscape. Sounds like it's got some little gerbils
in there, Or somethings being weighed on a very sensitive scale. Can I get rid
of that?

It only requires that while setting up the account. You don’t have to keep
going through that once it’s set up. I’ve only had to do that once and that
was in the beginning.

Deidre,

I believe this must be your first device running iOS 13.x. What you are
experiencing sounds like the haptic feedback engine at work as you swipe
across your screen and get feedback indicating movement among its various
buttons or controls. If you want to adjust the setting of this haptic
feedback, go to Settings, Accessibility, Voiceover, Audio, sounds and
haptics, and play with the haptic intensity setting found several swipes
down the screen. This took me a bit of adjustment when I first upgraded to
iOS 13.x but I adjusted and really like the feedback.

RE: Impressions SE2020

I think the sales of this phone may help to determine if Apple keeps offering
new, smaller phones. Smaller width wise anyway.
Time will tell.

Hi, I decided to get an SE2020 because it is a smaller phone and would fit my
smaller hands. I received it on Monday. These are my observations so far.

The setup was wonderful and very easy. I put the two phones together when it
was asked if I wanted to transfer data from my old phone. It was perfect except
I had to download an update which at the end put me back in the hello screen. I
could not find the English hello so I called Apple Accessibility and they told
me to shut off my phone and bring it back up. When I did so it asked for my pin
and when I had put it in I again was asked for my apple ID password. Once typed
in there was the whole screen with my folders and apps, some loading.

The fingerprint and home button has been a challenge to remember as I had
gotten used to the haptic swipe. However, the fingerprint is really snappy and
quick. The loading of pages and opening of apps is also snappy. Of course the
phone is much easier for me to hold. At the moment I don't have a case, but
that is on its way. I am hoping it will not make the phone too much bigger.

All in all, this has been a great change for me. It looks very much like Apple
will not go back to the smaller phones so it will be my phone for as long as
possible before I need to get a new one which will likely be much bigger.

Impressions SE2020

2020-04-29 Thread regina alvarado

Thanks. Likewise, I also got a reply that he's looking into it.
Quick question: Would the "reset all settings" require me to reorganize all my
apps on the home screen into folders? If so, I was thinking that I could do it
the coward's way:
1: Turn off iCloud sync and uninstall Voice Dream on phone B; 2: Reset all
settings on phone A; 3: Assuming that the duplicates problem is resolved on
phone A, reinstall Voice Dream on phone B and sync with iCloud;
4: Back up phone B to iCloud and restore phone A from that backup.
Anyway, it's nearly midnight here, so we'll see what happens. It's more of an
intriguing problem than a really serious disaster.

Hi all,
Thanks for your thoughts, experiences and suggestions. Richard, I may indeed
get in touch with Apple Accessibility, but think I'll wait to hear back from
Winston first. I also thought of using Be My Eyes on one phone to examine the
screen of the other!
Alan, in my case I have iCloud sync turned on. I too well remember the
horrendous problems that Mary had with her library. But since my library is
quite small and I make sure I back up anything important, I decided to go for
the "feel the fear and do it anyway" approach and stick with iCloud sync in my
case. My problemis nowhere near as serious as Mary's, as I can access all my
content and haven't lost anything. Famous last words!
I have noticed that a folder that I added about a year ago hasn't been
duplicated, which makes me think that the problem may have happened some time
ago.
You may have spotted that I'm rather reluctant to reset all settings, as I
don't fancy all that work, but I may not be able to avoid it forever.
I'll keep you posted.

Urgent query re setting up my Mac and the log-in screen with VoiceOver

2020-04-29 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via VIPhone
Hi all

Know this iisn’t IPhone-related, but it is Apple-related, so really really
hoping someone can help with this. I have just had my Mac back after having to
send it away for repair as it decided to crash/stop working completely. They
appear to have done a clean install of Katalena. I have spent this evening
re-setting it up with a friend. However, we are really struggling with
VoiceOver. We went into system preferences and accessibility and enabled VO. We
then went into users and groups, log-in options and accessibility options, and
ticked the box that said about enabling VO from the start. However, this does
not appear to have worked. Every time I now start my Mac VO literally says the
word “username” and nothing more. It won’t tell me where I’m navigating on the
screen or anything like that. So I literally can’t enter my password and log in
myself. So was just wondering if anyone else has had/is having this problem
with Katalena? Could anyone please send me a set of idiotproof instructions as
to how I can set up VO properly and fix this problem please??? Any help really
would be much appreciated, as what’s the point in having a Mac when VO won’t
even speak to me to enable me to log in!!!

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

Eleanor

RE: Siri and home button

2020-04-29 Thread Alan Lemly
Deidre,

I believe this must be your first device running iOS 13.x. What you are
experiencing sounds like the haptic feedback engine at work as you swipe across
your screen and get feedback indicating movement among its various buttons or
controls. If you want to adjust the setting of this haptic feedback, go to
Settings, Accessibility, Voiceover, Audio, sounds and haptics, and play with
the haptic intensity setting found several swipes down the screen. This took me
a bit of adjustment when I first upgraded to iOS 13.x but I adjusted and really
like the feedback.

Found The settings for what I want the phone to do when it's locked. Thank you
Allen.
Can I get rid
of that?

RE: Looking for a splitter to use usb head phones and charge phone

2020-04-29 Thread Alan Lemly
Richard,

Well, it won't be the first or last time I make an ass of myself by assuming.
If there exists an adapter that will let one use a set of type A full-sized USB
plug headphones on a lightning adapter iDevice, I'd love to hear about it. If
someone replies, please provide a model name and link.

I wondered if that is what you thought.

You know what they say about assuming, grin.

NO worries. I have one on order to use with the SE so I can charge and use the
lightning earphones.

I don’t have any USB headphones anyway, but Dacia might have some for her
computer that she was hoping would work with the iPhone with an adapter.

My apologies. The Belkin Rockstar splitter I posted about works with lightning

lightning adapter when she said USB since an iPhone doesn't have any USB ports

Re: Looking for a splitter to use usb head phones and charge phone

2020-04-29 Thread Wayne Merritt
Richard,
The Belkin Rock Star Alan mentioned only works with lightning earbuds,
such as the ones from Apple. It does not work wiht USB headphones. I
also have the Belkin splitter and have gotten a lot of use out of it
over the last few years. Another option is to get a QI wireless
charging pad or station. Then you could charge the phone on a pad and
have headphones plugged in at the same time. This assumes you have an
iPhone 8/Plus, the new SE an X series or 11 series phone which support
wireless charging.

Be well,
Wayne

I have found that if I go first to last name after selecting create new
contact, I can enter the last name then go back to the first name field enter
that, and then hit done.
If that isn't working, then definitely contact Apple.

Simply adding a new contact (not from an unknow number) works fine.

Re: Voice Dream Reader problem: Duplicate folder labels

2020-04-29 Thread Richard Turner
It happened to me as duplicate file names and I had cloud sync turned off.
I wish I knew what setting that was reset when I reset all settings that fixed
the problem.
But the fact that resetting all settings fixed it still makes me think its an
iOS VoiceOver issue, even though Voice Dream Reader is the only app that
behaved this way.

Hi, thanks to both, interesting that you've had similar problems.
Richard, I don't have access to physical sighted assistance at the moment
because of the lockdown, but I think my problem may be slightly different: The
duplicate folder names are not adjacent to each other, but spread throughout
the very long list at more or less regular intervals in a sequence. I can move
through the list using a three-finger swipe, and if i do a three-finger single
tap, VoiceOver will say something like "items 95 to 99 of 322", reflecting the
extent to which I've swiped through the list. This leads me to think that the
folder names are actually visible in my case, as opposed to mere figments of
VoiceOver's imagination:
You're definitely right to counsel caution, and I'll contact Winston and wait
for the response before doing anything rash. I'll report back to the list, if
you're interested.

Before you do any drastic in Voice Dream Reader, you may have a variation on an
issue I have had twice now.
Suddenly, Voice Over was saying the same file name twice, when visually there
was only one.
If I deleted one, both were gone.
Somewhat accidentally, I discovered that reseting all settings resolved the
issue.
Now, this is a royal pain, because most of the settings you have customized are
back to defaults, like keyboard, Siri, wall paper, rotor, and on and on.
Since this was clearly a VoiceOver issue, since my sighted wife confirmed there
really were only one copy of each file; mucking around in Voice Dream Reader
probably isn't going to solve it.
I would just proceed with caution.

Re: Potential bug when creating a new contact from an unknown caller

2020-04-29 Thread Richard Turner
I have found that if I go first to last name after selecting create new
contact, I can enter the last name then go back to the first name field enter
that, and then hit done.
If that isn't working, then definitely contact Apple.

I’m not sure which iOS version you have.

I had this problem recently with iOS 12.4. I couldn’t enter anything into the
first name field. I selected another field like last name. I entered
something there. Then I was able to go back to the first name field and
successfully enter the name.

Potential bug when creating a new contact from an unknown caller

2020-04-29 Thread Kimberly
Hi,

It would be great if someone could confirm this or else tell me what I’m doing
wrong.

Whenever I get a call from an unknown number for which I want to create a new
contact, I find I can’t type anything into any of the edit fields such as first
or last name or email. This is true with both the onscreen keyboard as well as
a bluetooth keyboard.

Simply adding a new contact (not from an unknow number) works fine.

If this is a bug I will report it to Apple.

Thanks,
Kim

RE: Voice Dream Reader problem: Duplicate folder labels

2020-04-29 Thread Alan Lemly
I'm curious whether those experiencing the Voice Dream duplicate folder label
problem have iCloud Sync turned on in their Voice Dream settings. I've never
turned this on since I only use one mobile device and I recall a problem Mary
experienced losing her Voice Dream library when she turned on iCloud Sync when
it was first introduced. I'm getting ready to set up a new iPhone and want to
get my Voice Dream content transferred but I'm less than convinced that iCloud
Sync is the best way to do this. I have sent an email to Voice Dream Support
asking about this but I don't think I'm going to get a reply before my iPhone
arrives tomorrow.

Best, Nicky

Hi all,

I meant to post this yesterday, but life got in the way. I have a strange

do not have duplicates of the actual files in the folders, and the “all items”

but in my folder list there are more than 200 items – at least, there were
until I started to clean them up.

If I delete one of the duplicate folder labels, all the instances of that
folder name are removed and the files in that folder are “moved” to the “no
folder” list. I realize that these are not actual physical folders, but they
are more like the labels used in Gmail, I assume. Having all these duplicate
folder names is very inconvenient, as I discovered to my cost when I wanted to

do with their iPHONEs and iPADs. So many people don't realise the power
they have because the information just isn't waiting there for beginners.

I did buy it, it's a rather expensive app as
apps go, $17.99 US and I think it was $24.99
Canadian for the lifetime purchase. You can try
it out for free for 14 days and there is a $0.99
US monthly subscription and a $5.99 annual subscription.

If you continue to use it in "free" mode it will
read the two lowest bills of each currencies,
here in Canada that means it would read $5 and
$10 bills since we don't have $1 bills any more.
But our bills are all made from a polymer matand
are marked with braille so usually it's easier
to just check them this way. Sometimes if I have
a larger deposit at my store with 20 or 30 bills
I may use Cash Reader since it's faster
especially if they aren't sorted so the braille
markings are all facing the same way and I have to look for them.

Cash Reader is in my opinion even more fast and
accurate than Money Reader was and it even read
bills which were folded in half and then in half again.

The other advantage (for some at least) is that
if you want the feedback silently or if you are
deaf-blind ,Cash Reader can also provide the identification with vibrations.

As Richard said, it's primary appeal is in how
many currencies it supports. It is not only
limited to the major currencies of the western
world like USD, CAD, Euro, AUD, NZD and so on,
but it literally can read dozens and dozens of
currencies including a ton of Asian currencies
like Philippine Pesos, Thai Baht, Indian Rupees
as well as pretty much any of the South American
currencies, a ton of African currencies and much
more. They update quite often and each time more
currencies are added, I actually

just checked the app store description and while
they don't say the total number, they do provide
a list and I have put the link for the app below
for those who want to check it out:

Hello Peter,

Currently there is no way to sort numerically. I have been asking for this for
the last 6 months with Spectrum tech support. To change the way channels are
sorted: navigate to the left and when VoiceOver reads the station channel and
call letters click and hold on the SIRI remote track pad. This will pop-up
options to sort the channels.

I hope this helps.

2020-04-29 Thread Michael Feir
That means a lot to me. I hope it can reach people new to the online world
and help them in this time when so much depends on being digitally
connected. I've just used my skills to order some subs from Subway for my
wife Sara and I to enjoy for lunches the next couple of days. Makes for a
nice change. I'd give anything for an evening with friends in a quiet pub
where conversation is possible and food and drinks were good and plentiful.
However, this will make for a nice treet.

2020-04-29 Thread Fred Olver
Hi Kay, I subscribe to that group as well. Thanks. I have money-reader on my
phone. Also, if you want my grocery cards for May please let me know, ASAP.
Otherwise I'll find some other way to dispose of them. Have a good day.

I did buy it, it's a rather expensive app as apps go, $17.99 US and I think
it was $24.99 Canadian for the lifetime purchase. You can try it out for free
for 14 days and there is a $0.99 US monthly subscription and a $5.99 annual
subscription.

If you continue to use it in "free" mode it will read the two lowest bills
of each currencies, here in Canada that means it would read $5 and $10 bills
since we don't have $1 bills any more. But our bills are all made from a
polymer matand are marked with braille so usually it's easier to just check
them this way. Sometimes if I have a larger deposit at my store with 20 or 30
bills I may use Cash Reader since it's faster especially if they aren't sorted
so the braille markings are all facing the same way and I have to look for them.

Cash Reader is in my opinion even more fast and accurate than Money Reader
was and it even read bills which were folded in half and then in half again.

The other advantage (for some at least) is that if you want the feedback
silently or if you are deaf-blind ,Cash Reader can also provide the
identification with vibrations.

As Richard said, it's primary appeal is in how many currencies it supports.
It is not only limited to the major currencies of the western world like USD,
CAD, Euro, AUD, NZD and so on, but it literally can read dozens and dozens of
currencies including a ton of Asian currencies like Philippine Pesos, Thai
Baht, Indian Rupees as well as pretty much any of the South American
currencies, a ton of African currencies and much more. They update quite often
and each time more currencies are added, I actually

just checked the app store description and while they don't say the total
number, they do provide a list and I have put the link for the app below for
those who want to check it out:

Cash Reader – bill identifier

I did not say it is a better app, just that if you want more than US
currencies, there isn't much else out there and people who have purchased Cash
Reader like it.

I don't need it, so hopefully someone who bought it can help.

Yeah that is what I thought ..

I’m working with a guy about a couple of issues with AD on one of my local
channels, so I will mention it to him. I already have suggested a couple of
other fixes in the phone/pad app. Irritates me that from a DVR recording you
can’t turn on SAP…but you can CC.

Re: Siri and home button

2020-04-29 Thread deidre muccio
Found The settings for what I want the phone to do when it's locked. Thank you
Allen.
Can I get rid
of that?

Thank you Simon, I will recheck it. By the way, is there any option in zoom to
mute myself quickly? any shortcut for that. Also any hot key to admit all
participants waiting for meeting room with out breaking the flow of my talk?

RE: the new iPhone SE 2020

2020-04-29 Thread Simon A Fogarty
I was thinking about this type of thing today when using my ipad mini 5,

I wonder why they haven't yet put the haptic feedback button in to the ipad's
Apart frm the pro line which have face id,
The others have touch id which is still a physical button and I just wondered
why that hadn't yet been changed.

I never had any wrong feelings about pressing my home button on my iPhone 8. I
checked with apple and if I traded in my iPhone 8 for an new SE I'd get about
$170 in trade in value. If I did decide to get a new SE, I'd see what I could
get if I sold my iPhone 8.

Re: Voice Dream Reader problem: Duplicate folder labels

2020-04-29 Thread Richard Turner
One thought, if you have not used Apple Accessibility, you could call them, and
they could do a screen share with you and tell you what the screen looks like.
They may say they cannot do this since it involves a third party app, but it
may be worth a try.
Or, make sure the screen curtain is off, and do a screen shot and send it to
someone sighted.
Apple Accessibility is 877-204-3930
I'm curious to know what you find out for sure.
