RE: will voice dream reader play epub and mobi text files?
Hi Aman, Thanks for letting me know. I'll use zamzar and convert the mobi files. I used to use it to convert youtube videos to mp3. Pitty that feature is disabled on that site but I have other software to do that. I'll keep the epub and use them with voice dream and see how I go. Hi. Epub will work fine with Voice Dream, it is actually better than TXT/RTF, divided into chapters/sections and otherwise a much pleasanter experience. Mobi will not work with the format but there's nothing easier than converting these to Epub See, for example http://www.zamzar.com/ for an online tool and http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/cli/ebook-convert.html for one that you can use locally. To use it, you will need to download the Calibre suite. Obviously, if these books are protected, the whole situation changes. RE: question about the life proof case for the iPhone 5
Hi all, I'm happy to say I bought the case. My Dad and I opened it up and had a look, and the case already had a screw at the bottom. I assume that's the one to seal the headphone jack? There was another screw attached to a cable with what looked like a headphone plug at one end. I'm sure there is a diagram in the manual so Dad will probably see how this works and can show me, but thought I'd ask on here as well, how does this second screw and cable work? Hi Siegard, Thanks heaps for your recommendations, I'll look these up. Do you know if any of these like the incredicharge for example can be bought in an actual store rather than online, I'm going overseas in a few weeks and prefer to grab something from a store rather than wait for something to be sent. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Friday, 19 July 2013 11:04 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: external iphone 5 batteries Hi Andrew, There are many, many of these things out there. The MyCharge line of batteries is very good although the new models I think lack one of the nice features of the older ones which announced the battery level at the push of a button. Anyhow, you only mention the Incredicharge brand as a whole and no specific models. I had a quick look on Amazon and they do have quite a few models and some of them like the I-10 definitely mentions the iPhone 5 although it shouldn't really matter all that much. Most of these batteries have a USB plug just like on a computer or a USB wall charger so you just plug in your iPhone 5 Lightning cable and all should be fine. One thing reviewers mention is that you seem to get a fairly good product for a relatively low price. Another well-known brand is Mophie and between MyCharge, Incredicharge and Mophie I am sure you can find something that works for you, I would just look this up on Amazon and go by rating and reviews. Here is a link for the IncreditchargeI-10 model on Amazon which has 10,400 MA, that is a high capacity and you should be able to charge your phone at least 4 maybe 5 times on that. Keep in mind that the larger the capacity the larger the battery, this one apparently is about the size of 2 iPhone 4S on top of each other. The I-10 has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 and that is certainly very good: http://www.amazon.com/Incredicharge-External-Battery-Capacity-Motorola/dp/B0 0AT5W8SI/ref=pd_sim_cps_1 Regards, Sieghard Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Andrew Head Sent: Friday, July 19, 2013 5:04 AM To: blind iphone list Subject: external iphone 5 batteries Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has some recommendations on a good external battery for the iphone 5? ubidisk tutorial
Hi all, I've been reading the adds for phone drive and ubidisk in the app store. It looks like ubidisk is the better app, considering the add said it's optomised for voice over. Just wondering if anyone has done a tutorial of this app? I'm thinking of using it when I'm overseas to unzip files downloaded to dropbox from sendspace etc. Kind regards, Andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Sendero's i-phone gps app
Thank you everyone for your positive words on this issue. This was forwarded from an Australian email list. There has been quite a bit of negativity regarding Sendero on that list in the last couple days. I agree with what everyone has said, and have already written to the Australian list, giving a more positive angle. I have nothing but praise the Sendero for providing a great service in providing accessible GPS. Sent from my iPhone On 05/07/2013, at 6:44 AM, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Mr. Kearney compares Sendero's strategy with a Bait and Switch which is unfortunate since it only means he has apparently not read the app description or any information about the app on the Sendero website. As somebody else pointed out, it clearly states on the Sendero website that a subscription is required and this information is also contained in the app description. In any case, here is the definition of a Bait and Switch which typically applies to retail products, it involves false advertising as well as 2 products, one as the bait and one, more expensive one, as the switch: Bait-and-switch is a form of fraud used in retail sales. first, customers are baited by merchants' advertising products or services at a low price, but when customers visit the store, they discover that the advertised goods are not available, or the customers are pressured by sales people to consider similar, but higher priced items (switching). The intention of the bait-and-switch is to encourage purchases of substituted goods, making consumers satisfied with the available stock offered, as an alternative to a disappointment or inconvenience of acquiring no goods (or bait) at all, and reckoning on a seemingly partial recovery of sunk costs expended trying to obtain the bait. It suggests that the seller will not show the original product or service advertised but instead will demonstrate a more expensive product or a similar product with a higher margin I find it unfortunate that so many people have so much bad stuff to say about a company and a product which most of them haven't even tried and which has been keenly anticipated by a lot of blind iPhone users. Let's hope that we will soon hear testamonies and reviews from people who are actually using the app and who point out its good sides for a change. This almost reminds me of all the bashing of apple that has been going on especiallhy in the tech media, it seems every time somebody comes out with something good somebody else feels they don't deserve recognition and success. Feedback and criticism can also be made in constructive ways which contribute to improving the product. RE: facebook messenger online friends
Thanks Patrick I'll turn read receipts on I didn't know about that little trick. *smile* I know IMessage automatically does this telling when it was read, but I am sure read receipts is off so this is a nice automatic IMessage feature. Yes Simon, facebook messenger on the IPhone is very much like msn, particularly the fact you can switch between multiple conversations like you used to be able to do in msn and which is harder on the facebook mobile site. But back to my original question, how do you know who is online and who isn't? If I see a friend or want to message someone I prefer to know if they are online. While messaging them anyway and waiting for a reply is good, I prefer if I want to chat to chat when they are online too and have a flowing conversation, rather than one that is broken up over the course of a few hours or even days considering we all lead such busy lives these days. I dislike conversations this way because everything is disjointed and you have to keep looking back to be reminded of what was said. First, if you are messaging someone who is online, FB messenger works like the regular message on the iPhone if you have read receipts turned on. If you send a message to someone and they read it, voiceover will say something like seen at and then show a time. Second, if you send a message to someone who is not online and you leave to go do something like sleep or grab a snack . there is no way that I know of that you are able to tell when they read the message. again, similar to the messaging app on the iPhone. ICloud backups
Hi all, I am in the process of using ICloud and restoring my iphone 4 to use in a couple of months when I go overseas. I checked the ICloud settings and it appears everything is turned on to be backed up, accept notes and mail. Does this mean my notes and mail won't be backed up to ICloud and I'll have to manually set up my gmail and bigpond accounts again on the iphone 4? And I'm guessing that is if I leave mail off. If I turn it on then all mail settings and accounts will be backed up and able to be restored to iphone. Also, after my settings were restored, the iphone said it would automatically restore my apps. What if I don't want certain apps, what if I just want the ICloud back up for my contacts, mail and settings, but only want to put certain apps on my 4? sending sendspace files to dropbox on iphone
Hi all, I heard if you use sendspace on your iphone, you can send files you want to download directly to dropbox. I went on sendspace on my iphone using a link to a page where a file was to download and didn't see this option. There was the usual click here to start download link, Just wondering where this option to send to dropbox is and do you need a sendspace account for this to work? automatically saving photos to specific albums on IPhone
Hi all, I was looking around in the photos app and saw you can create multiple albums, not just the camera role that comes as the default. What I want to know is, can I, once a new album is created, set the phone up so any photos taken automatically go into a new album and only that one and not into the camera role? Or can I set it up so photos automatically go to the camera role and any other albums created? Many thanks for this, you talk about things here that I've never thought of. grate explanation of all.that has surely helped me out I can tell you. What kind of experience do you want? This will tell us a lot in what you are seeking for in a set of headphones. Also, keep in mind that everyone has different types of aids that will react in different type of situation! So this will be tough to answer. For me, I have tried a lot of them. Some of the biggest problems I had are feedbacks from the aids to not being able to contain the music directly to my ear for a better experience. Obviously, we can just toss out the idea of the In the Ear headphones. :) So this leaves us with the following items Around the Ear, On the Ear, Bone Conducting, and Bluetooth headphones. So here are my problems. So let start with my Bose headphones. This is the Around the Ear style headphones. The problem I have with any Around the Ear headphones is that if you directly place them around your ear. You will have that lovely squealing feedback noise we get from our aids when they get to personal with an object that they are telling us that they need personal space. ;) Even though they had advertised how my aids were not supposed to squeal in tight positions. The pair I have decided that no matter how or what settings we have tried. I just can't seem to escape from this ordeal. So I had two choices for this. Either raise the headphones a bit higher so they set centered with the Aid themselves. This for me prevented the squealing. The other is that I have to raise the volume quite high before the aids would shut up. So having them at a low volume just won't work. However, this gave me the best natural sounds of my music playing. Now moving on to my Sony headphones. These are the On the Ear style headphones. These are great because they don't smother my aids and give them a fit that they had with my Around the Ear headphones. The only problem I have with this is that the fact our microphones are outside of those headphones. So the music is going directly through the ear mold of our aids. So you will get the surrounding noises. So I use this for work. This is great because I can hear if someone is coming or talking to me. Plus, the fact I can hear my computer screen reader talking to me at the same time. Not so great for the music experience but good for the screen reader and audio books. Moving along to my latest set of headphones. This is a Bone Conducting style headphone. These headphones really vary from one person from another. It is not consistent from my experience with other friends with aids. There are advantages as well disadvantages for them. These are the most favorite set of headphones. The advantages of these headphones are that no matter what situation I am in. They work better than I had expected them to do. If I have a loud environment. The On the Ear headphones will be worthless because of the surrounding noises are bothering me. These headphones do great for all situations for me. Now for the disadvantages. Sadly, there are more disadvantages than advantages. The first thing I had issues with is they vary from people to people. I think it may have something to do with a couple of things. The hearing loss that you have. If you have a lot of hair. Lastly, the type of cheeks you have. You see these headphones are placed on the cheek bones. They have to be snug on the bones. With a lot of hair. There have been a few cases that this prevents the ideal snug fit you will need for them. People with a lot of loss of hearing don't really get much out of them. Plus, the biggest problem is the noise bleed. Noise bleed is that everybody in that room where also hear what you are hearing. Except, for those really loud environment I was talking about. So for being by yourself. I love them. If you have people around you. It may annoy them. So this leaves the very last option. Some people are lucky to have the option to get the iCom. These will only work from those Bluetooth hearing aids. The device goes through the iCom which we wear around the neck. It then transmits the music or audio directly to our aids. These are very nice. The bad news is that not all of us can use this and it is not cheap at all. Plus, as much it is great for the audio. They really suck when it comes to music. They also put a huge drain on the battery in your aids. Lastly, they have the older Bluetooth technology which has a slight lag between your devices to your aids. So there you have it. Those are the experiences that I have had. None of them give me the perfect experience I would want in a headphones. So also keep in mind that I have the
RE: using IMessage and face time with both phone number and email
Hi Grant, Thanks for the info, so I guess I'll have to select my email to start new conversations when overseas as my number will be unavailable, however that doesn't matter to my parents? They can still message and face time me even if my Australian number is the only contact info in their phones? That correct? *smile* Andrew -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Grant Hardy Sent: Saturday, 11 May 2013 5:03 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: using IMessage and face time with both phone number and email Hey Andrew, The start new conversations from setting for iMessages determines the ID that will be shown when you start a new conversation with someone. If you select your phone number, it'll look a lot like traditional texting where your mobile number will show up (and in fact, you'll have the option of falling back to traditional text messaging if the iMessage server isn't reachable). If you select your Email address, people won't see your mobile number. Yes, only one of these can be selected, likewise for the caller ID setting for Facetime calls. One advantage of selecting your Email address as the default ID for Facetime and iMessaging is, as you've noted, the fact that messages will reach you even when you're traveling and are using a different phone number. A disadvantage, for iMessaging at least, is that there's no fallback to traditional text messaging if you happen to be without data for a while, or the iMessaging server isn't reachable. Note that people can reach you using your current phone number and any of the Email addresses you've associated with Facetime and iMessaging. You don't have to just pick one! This is only the ID that will be used for new conversations that you start. mantis bible study app and frotz text adventure games
Hi all, Firstly, Tonight at Church I tried using the mantis bible study app. I haven't used this app in a while but thought tonight I'd give it a go. When I double tapped to open the app, it appeared to open, but when I next moved around the screen I discovered I was still in my bible folder and not in the mantis bible study app itself. When I went to the app switcher, it showed up as if it was running, but I can't get it to open properly so I can view the contents of the app. I am running the latest version of IOS and I checked the app store just in case and I have all apps including mantis up to date. Anyone know what is going on there? Secondly, using the frotz text adventure games app, I saw if you add games to dropbox, they are synced to your phone. However, when I copied games on my computer into the frotz folder in dropbox, and pressed the sync button on the phone, nothing happened and the games on my computer aren't showing up on the phone. Does anyone know how to fix this? There is also an option to use a server between your computer and the phone using the frotz program, but the frotz for windows is inaccessible and the whole server thing sounds rather complicated. If anyone has used that and can give me some instructions on how to do it that way, I'd give it a try. *smile* Thanks in advance, Andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. tips for scanning lables with text detective
Hi all, I was using vizwiz and taptapsee to find out the what flavour drink I had in the fridge. I while I was able to determine the flavour using both these apps, I thought I'd have a go at using text detective to read what the rest of the label showed. However, this proved difficult. What I do is turn the bottle on its side so the label is facing up and position the phone above the label. When I tried this with text detective, I kept getting bits of words only. I'm guessing this is because the bottle is round and therefore the label curves around to follow the bottle, but was just wondering if anyone was successful in reading an entire label on a bottle just by scanning it. I do realise this must be difficult as it's not a flat surface. I haven't used text detective much and just thought I'd try this, but I guess I should stick to flat paper documents. So if you're quite sure the download will finish in 15 minutes or less, you can switch apps and not return to the first one; otherwise, you'll want to return to the first app in less than 15 minutes to keep the download going. There are also apps, such as the Learning Ally one, that require you to keep the app in focus during the whole download. Learning Ally tells you this when you start a download. I would imagine other apps that work similarly would also inform you since this is not typical behavior. audio within apps, the cloud, and updating time overseas
Hi all, I just had a few more questions relating to overseas travel. A friend of mine suggested just taking my iphone 4 and leaving the 5 behind and just downloading the apps I would use while overseas. I must confess I had forgotten about the fact that the you can have your account on multiple devices at the same time. Lol silly me. Anyway, I was just wondering, If I have apps that download audio content, such as audible and downcast, Are the audio files synced when I automatically update to ICloud and if so, could I turn on my iphone 4 and download these apps and will my books and podcasts previously downloaded be automatically redownloaded, or will I have to redownload them onto the 4? Also, I have my clock set to automatically update time, so I'm assuming when I turn on my phone in England, the local time is automatically updated and I can view it on the phone? Hi Bill and list. Chiming in on this discussion, as others have already stated yes you can have more than one email account configured on your favourite i-device. I have several accounts configured on my iPhone 4S. And, when you open the native mail client you can pick which account you would like to view so the emails from each account are separated, they are not all lumped together such as they are if you configure multiple email accounts in a program like ms outlook express on windows. However, as the native mail app on the i-devices configures itself so that the password for each account is saved by default under settings/mail contacts and calendars another concern which may be important to bring up in the context of this conversation is that of security or the lack thereof, I.E., user 1 could quite easily view the email, contacts, and calendar belonging to user 2. Of course, depending upon the relationship of the two users in question under this setup security may not be a concern, however; as we don't know such finite details I figured I'd toss this issue out for discussion. I am pretty sure of that because when I went to Thailand recently I first flew from Vancouver to Beijing, China. As soon as I arrived and turned off Airplane Mode, the time set itself even though I still had my Canadian SIM in the phone and it said No Service. When I then flew to Bangkok the next day once again the time set itself correctly when I arrived in Bangkok even before I bought and put in the Thai SIM card. I usually turn all the system services off because I found that in iOS 5 having especially the Setting Time Zone set to on, really seemed to use up a lot of battery. Even now when I am looking at it, it says Requested your location within the last 24 hours. I think if this is set to On it constantly checks your location, probably using the GPS. If you don't have a local sim in your phone, which would allow you to use your phone a lot more effectively, then you can manually select a network to rome on and hopefully find one that pushes the time for you. Hi all, I have 2 gb of music I want to delete from my iphone, but can't find how to do it using the music app on the phone itself, and den I go into itunes and plug my phone in, then navigate to where I can see my songs on my device, select all and press delete, nothing seems to happen. RE: deleting music off IPhone
Hi Sieghard, Thanks *smile* I've had the iphone for a while but had forgot about the action rota. I have also listened to the fs casts and found them very helpful. *smile* God bless, Andrew -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Sunday, 5 May 2013 12:51 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: deleting music off IPhone Hi Andrew, You can delete songs, albums or artists directly on the phone. If you open Music and, for example, select artists at the bottom. Then let's say you have Air Supply listet as an artist and want to delete it. Just swipe until you are on Air Supply, now do a single finger swipe up or down. Voiceover will say Delete and then you just double tap anywhere. This is a new iOS 6 feature and it's called the Action Rotor setting. In certain apps like in Mail, Messages, in the Favorites part of the phone app etc. the rotor automatically switches to this setting and the single finger swipe up or down toggles between Default and Delete. It is on Default by default so to speak which means if you are on Air Supply and do a double tap it will open this Artist and display any albums or songs. But if you flick up or down to change from default to delete, then the double tap will delete. Now, if you connect to iTunes and want to erase all music, just make sure you go to your Device, check Music and then say you don't want to sync any music. Then do a sync and all music should be gone. Keep in mind that in iTunes it's not really like you can delete something, you have to uncheck it and then sync to your phone. It sounds as if you are quite new to the iPhone and I highly recommend you listen to Jonathan Mosen's 2-part series of Podcasts on the Freedom Scientific website. I don't know if you are a Windows or Mac user and, if you are a Windows user if you use Jaws 14 with iTunes 11, but Jonathan does a great job explaining on how to use iTunes with Jaws and even if you were using a different screenreader you would still get something out of this. You can find the Podcasts here: http://www.FreedomScientific.com/FSCast If you use a Podcast app like Downcast or iCatcher on your iPhone, you can also subscribe to the Podcast from that app. I think it was the January and February FS Casts, so there would be 2 newer ones since the April FS Cast was just released, then there is March and then February. January would be the first part of the series. RE: Can I have more than one e-mail account on an iDevice?
Hi Sieghard, Thanks for the info, once an account was set up, how would I switch from one to the other to check mail? Is there something like switch account, that I'd double tap on and then accounts would be in a list and I just select the one I wish to view and it takes me to the inbox of that account and starts automatically downloading mail? -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Sunday, 5 May 2013 1:00 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Can I have more than one e-mail account on an iDevice? Hi Andrew, Yes, you can have as many as you want, well, I guess having 10 may not be practical and if you had them all set to Push it would use up a lot of battery. Anyhow, I have both my business email and my one personal Hotmail account set up, you can either see all emails in the All Inboxes folder or you can go to each account separately. You would set one of the accounts as your default account, typically it's whichever one you create first that is set as the default account by default. If you compose a message and want to send it from the other account, you can double tap on the From field, then a pop up control becomes visible where you can flick up or down and select whichever account you want. The iPhone has predefined account types such as Exchange, gmail, Yahoo, Windows Live Hotmail or you can choose other and then you can choose whether you want to set up the account as an IMAP or POP account. If you want your mail to be kept in sync between a computer and your iPhone or even have other devices, I highly recommend you use IMAp or, if you use a Hotmail or Outlook.com account, use the Windows Live Hotmail account which sets up the account using Exchange Active Sync. I just looked at your email address and I don't know what the Bigpont.net provider offers, but obviously you would need to have the correct information handy as far as IMAP settings are concerned or if they only support POP, you need incoming server, outgoing server, user name, password etc. I personally like Outlook.com a lot which used to be Hotmail/Windows Live because Microsoft has done a lot of upgrades to the service and it's top notch. RE: BeMyEyes: A ground braking product I'm a part of
Vizwiz already does this. You take a photo record a question and it uploads to a server and volunteers send answers back. This is just my humble opinion, but if you skype or facetime a person just to get the answer to a question like what can is this or the expiary date etc, using vizwiz or even a scanning app such as text detective seems much quicker and more efficient, and if you were to call a stranger ask your question and have them answer you probably in less than a minute, seems a bit pointless use of data and time consumption when there are already other apps out there. I agree when you have sighted family and friends as well as other apps I've mentioned and others, I personally feel there isn't a need for this one. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of John Diakogeorgiou Sent: Tuesday, 30 April 2013 12:35 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: BeMyEyes: A ground braking product I'm a part of Hi: Hi: Their are people who don't have access to family or friends that can help them sometimes. I'm involved in this cool project. Read more here: Be My Eyes is a non-profit initiative that aims to equip blind with a pair of eyes which fits into your pocket. This can be done by the blind at any time, on his/her smart phone: you start an application, and can through this be put in direct video connection with a voluntary sighted person. The sighted volunteer helps you through the camera in the blind person's smart phone to see (video transmitted to the helpers smart phone) what the blind person is pointing at with the smart phone camera and can solve a given task. The task could, for example. be: Reading the date on a milk carton, see if two socks are alike, read the buttons on the washing machine, etc. It is the blind who has control over what the volunteer sees, while the volunteer can for example say a little closer or date is on the other side of the milk carton. This way the blind and the sighted volunteer help each other to solve the given task. The technical part of the project is, first, to develop an application available for the blind that can connect the users with sighted volunteers - here is so far developed a prototype. The second part is to develop a system on a server that all Be My Eyes will run on. When you create a user account on the system, you could choose whether you are the visual impaired who needs help, or if you are the sighted person who wants to help. The sighted help to be able both to use the system on an iPhone (or other smart phone platforms), an iPad tablet (or other tablet platforms) with a larger screen so it's easier to see

is there a way to delete all text messages?
Hi all, Just wondering, I have a large back log of text messages on my phone, and am wanting to delete them. Just wondering if there is a way to delete all messages at once, or do I have to manually select each message before deleting? If the answer is no, then Apple should really put this feature in and would question why it isn't in already. Re: question Iphone 5
Hi Sieghard, Wow many thanks for all the info. I wonder if you know if the voice on the Iphone 5 is louder than what was on the iphone 4. I ask this as I ware two hearing aids and find the voice hard to listen to some times. You've surely given me plenty to think about. Thanks once again Regards Andy S -Original Message- From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Friday, March 15, 2013 4:22 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: question Iphone 5 Hi Andy, I won't list all the advantages of an iPhone over any other phone if you happen to be a blind user, but here are the main points: Blind or not blind, the iPhone is the most popular single phone, it is one of the fastest, best designed and, in the case of the iPhone 5, I think it is also the thinnest smartphone currently available. It also has one of the best cameras, not necessarily in Megapixels, but it has been proven many times that pictures taken with an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 are better than those taken with another phone which has a camera with a higher Megapixel sensor. This is because just the sensor isn't responsible, it also the quality of the lens and the way the image is processed. For a visually impaired person, the iPhone has by far the best accessibility. Android accessibility is definitely better now than it was a year or 2 ago, but while iPhone accessibility is being improved as well, the iPhone was just as accessible 3 years ago already as it is now. Because Apple has such control over both hardware, the iOS platform and the app store, everything just works. Of course there are bugs as well, but Apple's commitment to accessibility is probably stronger than Google's and while Google seems to improve accessibility as well, the many differences in the hardware from so many manufacturers and the stuff they do with Android to customize it to their liking simply makes it more difficult. In total there are many more games on the iOS side than the Android side. iDevices are the biggest mobile gaming platform and you can listen to last week's Today in iOS Podcast which you can find at www.TodayInIOS.com if you want to hear more on that topic. The iPhone may not have as many cool and cutting edge features as Android nowadays since Apple takes a more conservative approach, but keep in mind that it was because of Apple's integration of SIRI into iOS and the iPhone 4S why nowadays Android and other platforms are also doing this. When SIRI first came out some tech pundits laughed it off as a gimmick just as many thought the iPhone itself when it was first released in 2007 was a temporary phenomena and fad which people would soon put aside and forget about. Android may have happened anyways, but to a large degree Android came about because of the iPhone and because of the vision Steve Jobbs had. Whether you buy an iPhone or not is entirely up to you, it's not up to me or anybody else to convince you beyond pointing out the facts, but if you do your homework you will probably come to the conclusion that unless you reject the concept of the iPhone and maybe Apple as a whole for whatever reason, the iPhone is the best choice if a blind person wants the most accessible smartphone. If you don't mind fiddling around and going through a lot of frustration then an Android phone maybe right for you, but if you don't like Apple's control you can always Jailbreak the iPhone which gives you a lot more flexibility as to what you can do with it. Beyond that I would encourage you to search the list archives if you have questions first as after years of list traffic just about everything you can think of has been discussed on here and, as I already said, the Today in iOS podcast is one of the best sources for information about the iPhone and the iOS platform. Greek language in language rotor on iOS 6.1
Dear Listers, In iOS 6.0, one could not use the Greek voice as it would only spell the Greek text rather than read it as normal. In iOS 6.1, this behaviour appeared to be the same, much to my dispair. However, I've played with it a little more and I discover that if I make the Greek voice my default voice in settings / international, then I can read Greek text as one should. The problem is however, that having made Greek the default voice, all the icons change to the Greek localisation as well. The Greek voice can read English but with a degree of distortion which makes it very tiresome. Therefore, in english applications, Greek voice will read the English icons and text but in a ditroted somewhat distorted way. It is a solution for me but not very satisfactory. I don't understand why it is that when I choose Greek using the rotor with English being the default, then the Greek doesn't work properly, but when I make it the default voice, then it does. Has anyone else noticed this with other languages? It seems to me that it is a bug since no other voice behaves in this fashion. Even when you go to the languages options and flick through the list of all available languages, all languages are spoken by their full name, i.e., Francé, but when you land on Greek it says, epsilon, lambda lambda iota, nika, rather then ellinika which is a full name. So it spells part of the name and part pronounces it. Feel free to write of list, if you wish with your experiences, comments. It's frustrating to be able to choose French let's say when I need it, or Russian, and read a piece of text easily, and not to be able to switch through language rotor option into Greek to let's say browse a website in Greek or read an ej-mail from a Greek friend. Choosing Samantha as default voice
Dear Listers, Someone on the list has helpfully suggested that if I'd like to have Samantha as my default voice instead of Daniel, I could do so by changing my regional settings to the USA. I've tried to accomplish this but I'm not quite sure how to do this. Could someone please give me step by step instructions? I feel such a fool. I've changed my region to USA but Daniel is still my default voice. How do I switch to Samantha? In the language rotor I can choose English and it is a female voice but it does not sound like Samantha used to sound. It's rather strident unless she has changed her personality. How do people download Samantha if they do at all? I look forward to any suggestions. Thanks in advance Andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Introducing BrailleTouch - an iPhone app for typing in braille on your touchscreen
Caleb, Are you planning on releasing Braille Touch for iPad, or is it not possible? Andrew On 31 Dec 2012, at 14:25, BrailleTouch viph...@brailletouchapp.com wrote: Hi Kawal, With BrailleTouch, you type each braille chord on your touchscreen with the same six fingers you would use on a Perkins Brailler or similar keyboard. BrailleTouch reads each character as soon as you lift your fingers off the touchscreen. Grade 2 is our top priority for a future update. How different will this be, will the keys instantly come up as if you were typing on a perkins? How will we know that a letter has been completed, will Voice Over just anounce it and we know that it's been done? I encourage you to get grade 2 out as soon as possible. Re: arabic language
Dear Mary, To chime in on your comments on an accessible Arabic/English dictionary, I use translate.google.com page where you can set your language to whatever you wish. I use it primarily for Greek but with my macbook air - I haven't tried it with an iOs device. But if you want to use it with your iMac, you can easily do so. I set hotspots for the text box where I type my query words and another as closely as I can to the result box, and it works quite well. You need to familiarise your self a little with the page but it is not terribly cluttered. There may well be other web based dictionaries for Arabic which I am not aware of. There certainly is a good one for Greek, and it is an invaluable resource for me. Hope this helps. Best wishes Andrew On 30 Dec 2012, at 18:03, Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Aman, I am interested in your comment about writing in Arabic. So if I have a braille display connected via bluetooth to an iPhone and I set input for grade I braille, I assume I'd also have to set the input method/keyboard to Arabic, and then I could type in Arabic braille on my braille display keyboard and have the proper text entered? I can't conceive of trying to actually type Arabic litters either on screen or with a bt keyboard, as I have no clue where they are. I'm hoping to find an accessible Arabic to English dictionary and would need to be able to search for words in same. Re: arabic language
Dear Mary, I hope you will be able to upgrade your system. Whilst upgrading to Mountain Lion has brought more languages for me, certainly a decent language for Greek for free and Russian of course as well as others, iOs 6 upgrade - as I've often and boringly said before - has broken the Greek language on iOs devices for me so that I can no longer use Greek on any of the iOs devices with iOs 6 operating system. More to the point, the impressive thing on translate.google.com website is that it recognises in most situations the language which you enter your query in. So if I type in a Greek word or phrase, or sentence, it will automatically recognise the Greek language. Now I have to bear in mind the fact here that the Greek script is different and probably readily recognisable as Greek, so should Russian. I'm not sure whether Arabic script would be so recognised. Secondly, the software on the website is very intuitive, so if I make a mistake in my spelling - even of some greater proportion - Google will suggest a correction. This is very useful to me because it helps me learn the spelling of Greek words more efficiently. It is like having a teacher tell you, this is not right, this is the right way of spelling the word. It is not always correct, certainly when grammar is concerned, but as long as you know the grammar, you can work out a lot of what it gives you as a translation. With best wishes Andrew On 30 Dec 2012, at 19:18, Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Andrew, Thanks for that hint. I'm still running Snow Leopard on my 3-year-old Mac mini so I don't have the voice for Arabic here as is present with Lion and Mountain Lion. I also think there were improvements to braille support for languages other than English introduced after Snow Leopard. So this google translate idea may have to wait until I get a newer Mac. Out of curiosity, when entering Arabic words into google translate, do you have to enter the root or do you enter the word you want directly? For example, I use to have access to a dictionary where I worked, and to do searches you entered the (generally 3-letter) root, e.g. ktb even if the word you wanted was a noun based on that root, e.g. kitab. Hope that made sense. Mary Mary Otten motte...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: reading in braille on the iPhone in different languages
Hello Mary, I have just switched to the Russian braille table on my mac computer which has Voiceover. The Braille table seems to work fine. Re: Ultralingua dictionaries at discounted prices. Fwd: Cyber Monday at Ultralingua: Everything is on Sale!
Yes, Anna, I have used them for quite a while. They are aware of accessibility issues and open to comments. and feedback. I've mostly used the mac application rather than iOS version but I know from some users on the macvisionary list who have used the iOS version. I've found the mac version very helpful, and it has a number of language modules. On the mac side, when you open Ultralingua, you are presented with a familiar layout of toolbar, then table of various choices of functions starting with dictionary (where you choose the dictionary you wish to search, ie. in my case, English Collins dictionary, French Dictionary, English-French, French-English, etc, then swap dictionaries button which is originally unlabelled but I have labelled it myself, through which you can reverse the dictionaries from say English to French to French to English, then another unlabelled button (I can't remember what it was now but have never needed to use it), and then the html section with which you interact to read your results. You need to navigate with vo+arrow keys to read the results. Press command+f to jump to the search box which is located in the toolbar. The table of various functions of which I spoke above, is a bit buggy under Lion but I can see that under the go menu item in the menu bar, there is a number of useful shortcut keys to change the function, i.e. command+1 for dictionaries, command+2 for conjugations, command=3 numbers, command=4 for flash cards (never used this function. There are also other shortcut keys if one wishes to explore the menu bar. Hopes this helps somewhat. You need to check under get info in iTunes where the book appears before you sink it to the iPhone whether under info' and options tabs the book is marked as audiobook. Hope this helps a little. Registering devices with Apple support website
Dear Listers, First, I'd like to thank Esther for explaining the importance of registering whatever Apple devices one has with the support site in the profile section. However, I have a problem. I have an Apple ID which I use for iCloud and another ID which I use for iTunes store. It would now appear that my mac computer is registered to my iCloud ID and my iPad and iPod nano to the iTunes store ID. My question is, could I somehow combine the two registration/profiles together? Can one at this late stage combine the two IDs into one without jeopardising one's purchase history and messing one's iCloud account? Maybe it's best to leave things as they are. I don't remember actually registering my i.s devices under my iTunes store ID. It must have been done automatically because I purchase through the iTunes store and sink my i.s devices with iTunes. Any thoughts would be welcome Andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Registering devices with Apple support website
Dear Kawal, No, I did not take out Apple care for any of my i.s devices. They must have automatically been registered in my profile associated with the iTunes store credentials. I've been researching this subject since I asked the question - a neurotic thing to do - and i am beginning to understand that there is no way out. I'm stuck with two IDs - one for iCloud and one for iTunes. My i/os devices must have associated automatically with my iTunes store ID as soon as I started sinking them and configuring them in iTunes. Maybe the whole thing doesn't matter. I just have to remember which device is registered via which ID. Hm! Not very clever but that's how it seems to be. Andrew On 13 Nov 2012, at 21:46, Kawal Gucukoglu kawa...@me.com wrote: Hello Andrew. When you bought your IOS devices, did you enroll for the Apple Care? Textilus is an iPad-only word processor designed for the editing and importing of documents in Rich Text Format or RTF. In fact, the app used to go by the name RichText Edit. But perhaps realizing how generic, although appropriate, the name was, app developer Knowtilus decided to change it to the more brand-specific Textilus. And Textilus aka RichText Edit is one such app. Thanks to the updates it has received since its launch last July, Textilus continues its growth as a notable word processing app. The app’s latest update, for instance, is typical in that it brings a considerable number of new features: User defined paragraph line spacing. Seriously, so we went to Best Buy because I wanted to see if they have any of the headphones I've been reading about, but also because I'm a geek and just like going to Best Buy even though I normally don't buy from there. In short, after asking about various headsets and all that, the rep told me about the new ones they just got in from Motorola. The S11-HD. I had read on Amazon the reviews of the S8 and S10 and they seemed ok, but hadn't jumped out at me. However upon doing a quick web check while I was there, I saw they were supposed to retail for $129. Best buy had them for $59. I figured that since I'd be paying around $40 or $50 from Amazon to get the others I was looking for, I might as well snag myself one of these since they seemed to be half off. Later the rep confirmed that they had the wrong price, but since she said $59, and since that's what was shown on the display, she got the manager to override the price and sold it to me for that plus tax. So, $64 later I walked out with my new Bluetooth headphones. These are awesome. For starters they come with extra ear buds so in case the default attached ones are not to your ear's liking, you can switch them out. The specs claim a range of up to 150 feet. Although I'm a bit skeptical of that, I can confirm that walking around my house while the iPhone was charging in my bedroom didn't cause the music to drop out, turn into static or anything like that. The phone call I was on also stayed clear. I was able to cause interference by closing the doors to my bedroom and walking into the garage across the house and also closing the door behind me. Still though, that is awesome! Pairing them was a snap, when you power them on, a pleasant female voice walks you through the steps and the pairing mode was automagically enabled. So all I did was go into the iPhone's Bluetooth device section and they were there. I connected them and wasn't asked for a pin, but the nice girl inside the headphones informed me that if a pin was asked of me, the code is . Once paired, she informed me that the pairing was successful and then told me how much talk time I had. The iPhone shows the battery status of the headphones as well, so that's a neat little feature. While the girls went for more shopping and later when we ate dinner at the mall, visited more clothing stores, and played at the ATT store, I wore them and didn't feel uncomfortable. I can push the ear bud tips all the way in my ear to seal off outside noise, or I can leave them just outside my ear and that way I can hear people and things around me. Even if the phone locked and went to sleep, I was still able to hear the occasional sounds my phone makes if I get a push notification. I was able to easily receive and make calls, and I was easily able to start and stop the music. There is more I can write about this new purchase, but these are the basics. Cheers. -- Raul A. Re: RTF DropBox editor
Dear Esther, Thank you so much for this review of Textilus. It sounds like an attractive application, better than Pages. I shall give it a go. Best wishes Andrew On 28 Oct 2012, at 09:30, Esther mori...@mac.com wrote: Hi Jane and Others, Jane asked: Is ther a good ERTF file editor for the DropBox to install on an iPod? What is it, if there is sucha thing? I've just come across an app that might be usable for editing Dropbox RTF files for the iPad, but there's no version for the iPhone or iPod Touch. It's called Textilus Word Processor and the developer is knowtilus. Here's the URL at the iTunes app store: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textilus-word-processor/id537818639?mt=8 I found this because it just went on sale today for $0.99, and I haven't had a chance to play around with this much yet. The way this works when you create or edit a document is that there's an extended keyboard with an extra row of buttons above the top row of letters. The buttons on the top left of the keyboard are for alignment, bold, italic, underline, special characters, other commands, and tabs (which weirdly gets announced as capital A). Then at the top center is a Magic Cursor button that you have to use the double tap and hold gesture to bring up, which does actions like select all or move to the start or end of the document. On the top right are the buttons for font type and size. The top row buttons let you handle formatting and special characters. For example, Other Commands lets you select options like title, subtitle, heading 1, heading 2, ordered list, or unordered list in addition to subscripting, superscripting, and the default body style. Special Chars lets you insert web links, date time, as well as several classes of special symbols, such as bullets, currency, arrows, punctuation, math symbols, etc. These lists are pretty extensive, and there are more symbols than VoiceOver on the iOS device will read, especially in categories like pictographs, arrow variations, or some of the math symbols, but most special character options are announced. There's also a recently used category of special characters. One feature I wasn't able to change with VoiceOver was the line spacing. Double tapping the Helvetica button brings up a Text Style pop up menu, but the size and line spacing of the font don't get announced here. Font size is announced and can get changed with buttons to the right, either by choosing common font sizes, or by increasing or decreasing the current font size with buttons. Dropbox linking can be set up using the App menu toolbar button on the My Documents titlebar. There's a document that appears in your list of documents named How it works? when you link with Dropbox. It explains that it creates an Apps/Textilus folder under your Dropbox, and that only documents placed ther will sync and show up in the Textilus app. You can place RTF, .TXT, .DOC, or .DOCX documents in this folder. Empty folders in this location will be removed from the document picker and unlinked. Textilus also supports syncing with Scrivener, which is a Mac writing application that also now has a Windows version. (The Mac version of Scrivener is very accessible, but I don't know about the Windows version. However, there are free trial downloads of both from the Literature and Latte developer's site.) Maybe some Windows iPad users can try this app out and report back. HTH. Cheers, Esther -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. problem quitting applications with home button
Dear Listers, I seem to have a problem trying to quit certain applications by pressing the home button. Similarly, I can't seem to be able at times to call up app switcher by pressing the home button twice quickly. I am talking here about the iPad 2. The trouble is that this behaviour is erratic. Sometimes the home button works immediately, other times I have to press it several times. Sometimes I can't quit an application and I can only do so by performing the five finger pinch that takes me to the screens with my applications listed. Has anyone else had this experience? Re: question about the lg hbs730 bluetooth headset.
A slightly side question. When you use a blutooth earphones, do you have to pair them every time you want to use them? What happens if you don't want to use the earphones but listen to the internal speaker? How does the speaker know that you don't want to use the earphones? Is it just by turning the earphones off? Can one turn them off? I know it all sounds rather simple but I've never had a pair of bluetooth earphones, and I'm researching them with a view to getting a pair. Thanks for any tips. Re: VoiceOver Focus Problems With iOS 6
It does the same occasionally for me in Tune-in radio pro. Is it Voiceover or the app itself? On 25 Oct 2012, at 12:13, MamaPeach mamape...@charter.net wrote: It is very annoying, especially on the net Flix app. I can double tap on a show to continue watching and it will always go to a different show instead of the one I double tapped on. Noticed this other times too, but mostly with the Net Flix app. -Original Message- From: Ivan Cardenas (BraillePluss) Sent: Sunday, October 14, 2012 8:34 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: VoiceOver Focus Problems With iOS 6 That is a huge setback. It only started to be able to retain this information a few IOS versions ago, I don't remember which one, but its current behavior has reverted to before that was enhanced. Probably the best way is to touch somewhere on the screen that might be close to where you want to be and then explore for the correct spot or swipe to it from there. No configuration options are going to put back what you are missing right now. I searched the archives for information but without any luck. Whenever I move from one screen to another and then back to the original page, focus is returned to the top of the screen. An example of this is writing a message and selecting to add an address from the contacts list. When returning from the contacts list, focus is moved to the top of the message screen. This is time consuming and annoying. Is this a problem with iOS6? Have I set some values incorrectly in settings? Any help is greatly appreciated. Re: Greek voice in I/os 6
I am beginning to have a dreadful suspicions that the responses we get from Apple become more and more mechanised, i.e. issued by a computer or similar means. The thing is that the Greek voice used to work fine in the previous version and is broken in I.Os 6. I've been informed of a response from Apple on this issue that it will be solved in the release of i/Os 6. The point is that number 6 has been released already and the Greek voice has been broken in it. So I;m not sure whether we are being heard here or just given a standard answer. I imagine somebody spending a few hundred pounds on the strength of the knowledge that I/Os has a Greek voice and then not be able to use it. Don't they test the voices with native speakers? Anyway, sorry for this. I'm a 100 % Apple person but this is upsetting and somewhat unfair. Greek voice in I/os 6
Dear Listers, In case there are some Greek speakers on the list, I have to say that much to my disappointment the Greek voice in the new I/Os operating system is broken. That means that it is actually unusable. It attempts to spell in Greek rather than read. In fact, it spells out some of the letters and then attempts to pronounce the rest in chunks. It makes it totally unusable. I've e-mailed accessibility about this. It is very upsetting as I have to study through the medium of Greek. It used to work alright in the previous i.os system. Please warn anybody who needs to use the Greek language. Best wishes Andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group.
