RE: Blindfold, spider, Solitaire games

2024-04-06 Thread Rob Armstrong
I do not play the Blindfold Solitaire games. But I do play Kings Corner, which
is similar. Occasionally, Kings Corner doesn't function properly. When that
happens, I solve the problem by closing the app, using the app switcher to
remove it from storage, and then open the app again. That solves my problem.

You might try this with Blindfold Solitaire games to see if it works.

As a note, with Kings Corner, I don't even lose my place in the game.

Subject: Blindfold, spider, Solitaire games

Good afternoon everyone,

I have been a great fan of playing solitaire for years. I’ve had the Blindfold
Solitaire games for quite some time. When I went to play the game today, when I
attempt to move an ace to the foundation, it tells me it can’t be moved. Does
anyone know if there is a solution for this problem? Also, I deleted and
re-downloaded the game and that didn’t help. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

RE: Phone update question

2024-03-31 Thread Rob Armstrong
You should first take a backup of your current system just to be safe. You can
back up to iCloud. But the better approach is to take an encrypted backup to a
Windows computer or a Mac. I have never had to restore from a backup, but I
always take a backup before a major update to a new release.

You should probably have your phone plugged into the battery charger while
doing the update. Start the update when you are getting ready to go to bed.
You will have to enter the pass code to begin the update. After you enter the
pass code, the update will happen without you having to do anything.

When I did the update a few weeks ago, an error occurred during the download of
the new version. There was an option to retry. After I double tapped Retry,
the update downloaded and installed without any more problem.

When the update finishes, it automatically shuts down and restarts the phone.
It will be on the home screen.

I'm one of those people who update their phones later than most. This morning,
I wanted to download an APP and discovered I'd have to have the latest version.
Good reason to update from iOS 16. Is there a way to do this by having it
happen overnight, instead of putting my phone out of commission during the day
while the update is being installed? Thanks for any suggestions.

Share Your Location In Google Maps

Double tap Account And Settings in the top right corner of the main screen
of Google Maps.

Double tap Location Sharing.

Double tap Share Location.

Scroll through your contacts on the lower portion of the screen.

Double tap on the contact you want to share your location with.

I did not go any further with the process, so there may be another step.

To stop sharing, follow the same process to get into the location sharing
section. There will probably be a button to stop sharing.

Before iOS 17, I was using a text notification tone that I could hear

Be My AI Mentioned Amongst TIME Best Inventions of 2023

The new AI Describer for people who are blind or have low vision is featured in
the AI Category

Michele Paris

Marketing and Communications Manager

Be My AI, the first-of-its-kind digital visual assistant powered by GPT-4, was
mentioned amongst the Time Best Invention of 2023

thanks to the collaboration between Be My Eyes and OpenAI. The annual list
features the most groundbreaking inventions, including new products and ideas,
that TIME editors have identified as “life changing”.

“Be My Eyes is proud to be mentioned among the brilliant innovations included
in TIME’s Best Inventions 2023 list with Be My AI. This new tool is providing
people who are blind or have low vision with a better way to address everyday
needs and acquire tools and visual descriptions never before possible,” said
Michael Buckley, CEO of Be My Eyes. “We are grateful to TIME for this
incredible recognition, as we work to create a more accessible world for people
of all abilities.”

This acknowledgment comes after a week from Be My Eyes’ celebrations for
officially reaching 1,000,000 chats on Be My AI. As of today, over 5,500 blind
people are accessing Be My AI every day, asking over 30,000+ questions daily to
the AI-powered tool.

“The new feature of having an AI assistant, specifically Be My AI, has truly
been a game-changer for me. It allows me to experience the world in a whole new
way by providing detailed descriptions of various things,” says Malak, who has
been beta testing Be My AI since March. “Thanks to Be My AI, I now have the
ability to enjoy visual experiences and share moments in ways that were once
unimaginable. Be My Eyes' contribution has made a significant impact on our
lives, and we are incredibly thankful for their invaluable support.”

Be My AI is currently available for all Be My Eyes users on iOS. We have
already started closed beta testing Be My AI for Android devices and our goal
is to move it to broadly-available open beta status in the coming months. It is
already possible to sign up on the waitlist for Android beta testing in the Be
My Eyes app.

If you need to give the Eero app permission to access your network devices, go
into Settings -> Privacy -> Local Network and look for the Eero app.

Which IP address are you looking for? In the Eero app you can go to Settings
and Network Settings and you’ll see the WAN and gateway IP addresses. If you
want the IP address assigned to a particular device, just double tap on that
device in the home tab.

That message disappeared, so where can I find in the app to connect my other

Thanks.

Yes, you need to do this. The Eero app on your iPhone needs to be able to
connect to your Eero devices over the network.

Hi,

When I tried to open my EERO router on my phone, I got a message that EERO
would like to connect devices to my local network. I've never gotten that
before. Can someone explain that to me and whether I need to do that? My router
has been working fine, so I'm a little confused. It's EERO Plus that I'm using.

Thanks.

Good day to all and a beautiful late Summer day it is here in Toronto.
I've started research on buying a new laptop. I'm using Jaws or NVDA as a
totally blind user.
I'm currently using an HP Envy 11 inch machine that I have not been happy with
from the start, three years ago.
My usage is mostly Internet, Microsoft suite of products including e-mail.
Wondering if anyone has recent experience that you might want to share, be it

RE: My phone announcing Screen curtain on

2023-06-06 Thread Rob Armstrong
I wasn't asking who spoke all the samples to create the Samantha voice. I
asked if anyone still has the list that identifies what the older names were
for the Siri voices now called voice 1, voice 2, ETC. All of the Siri voices
used to have names like Samantha and Aaron.

When trying to choose VoiceOver voices, we cannot be sure the voice we chose is
not a Siri voice since the Siri voice is not identified by the same name.

RE: My phone announcing Screen curtain on

2023-06-06 Thread Rob Armstrong
I have just updated to iOS 16.5. Even in iOS 15.7, iOS frequently jumps back
several screens in both Google Chat and WhatsApp. This happens no matter
whether the screen curtain is on or off. It does not jump back the same amount
each time.

This seems to be a bug with iOS 16.5 and also still with iOS 16.6 beta. I think
what is happening is that there is some sort of brief crash because whenever
this happens for me I am kicked back up the top of the page no matter if I was
just swipeing through Facebook posts, reading a news article or whatever. This
also happens with screen currtain off, but since I think Voiceover briefly
crashes and restarts when screen curtain is on you hear the message "screen
curtain on".
I have been meaning to send this to Apple Accessibilithy and demonstrating with
a screen recording, but I am not sure if a screen recording would do much when
screen curtain is on; just as a screenshot with screen curtain on gives you an
image of a black screen I assume maybe a screen recording with screen curtain
on does the same. I tried a few days ago and of course while I was doing the
screen rec ording all went normally and this didn't happen. Anyways, I am glad
I am not the only one and it would be interesting to know if others experience
this or sometimes are surprised that focus suddenly jumps to the top of the
page even when screen curtain is off. It is a bug for sure as far as I am
concerned; not a dealvbreaker, but quite annoying.

RE: How to take a screenshot on an SE second generation iPhone?

2023-06-02 Thread Rob Armstrong
If you do not have the email thread on your iPhone, create an email to yourself
so you can send the attachment to your computer.

If you have the email thread on your iPhone, start a reply email.

Enter some text in the body of the email. When you finish entering text or
reach the spot where you want to insert the attachment, follow the steps below.

Carefully explore the screen above the keyboard. You will find the following
options: Note that you can flick right to hear each of these options.

Text format button
Insert photo button
Take photo or video button
Scan document button
Scan text button
Insert attachment button
Insert drawing button

You can double-tap on the Insert photo button and choose the photo from the
photos gallery or double-tap Insert attachment button and choose the file you
saved in the Files app.

Below is a link to the Apple Support page describing this process.

Maybe my brain just isn't in gear today because I am usually better with
technology. But I saved the screen shot to files, but I still can't figure out
how to get it into the email string that I already have going with the VDR
developer.

Sorry I'm so dense today.

just took. It will have the current date and very recent time stamp.

Double-tap on the photo to open it.

Near the bottom of the screen, double-tap the Share button.

There will be several options on the share screen. Explore the screen however
works best for you. Explore by touch or just flick right many times to hear
the options.

Among all the options, one option is "save to files". If you have DropBox,
OneDrive, or other cloud storage apps, they will be among the options.

Double-tap Save to Files.

Explore the screen. The last folder you saved something to will probably be
selected. You can save the image there or create a new folder. Be sure to
note what folder the image will be saved to.

When you are ready, double-tap the Save button in the upper right corner of the
screen.

Now you can start a reply email and send the image as an attachment to the
email.

Thanks Rob and Richard. I have successfully taken the screen shot but I can't
figure out how to attach it to my reply to the developer. I could start a
completely new email but I wanted to respond in the email thread we already
have going. Can you help?

Thanks

2023-06-02 Thread Rob Armstrong
Here is how to take a screen shot on any iPhone with a home button.

I don't know if it is required, but I recommend that you make sure the screen
curtain is off before taking a screen shot. Turn the screen curtain on or off
with a 3 finger triple-tap.

Press the power button and home button at the same time. You will hear the
camera click. Wait just a few seconds, and the screen shot will be in the
photo library.

Hi all,

I need to take a screenshot to send to an app vendor for diagnostic purposes.
But I can’t remember how to do it. Could someone remind me? I’m running the

Thanks in advance for your help.

He needs an app in which he can navigate between specific landmarks on his

RE: Important, No Text Verifications

2023-03-04 Thread Rob Armstrong
On most sites, you can choose to receive the verification code by text message
or email. You usually have to indicate every time you log in whether you want
the code sent by text message or email. After you do everything to send the
verification code by text message, do you find the edit box to enter the
verification code? That is your confirmation that the text message was sent.

Here are a few questions to help diagnose the problem. You have probably
already checked most of these.

Have you looked at the messages app to see if the message arrived? If it did
arrive, you may have the sounds muted or the text alert tone volume turned
down. The text message alert may have been turned off. This could possibly
happen during an iOS update.

Do you receive text messages from other people?

Subject: Important, No Text Verifications

Hi,

All of a sudden, I am not able to receive verification codes for logging into
websites like for banking. At first, I thought it might be an issue with the
website, but this happens to me on multiple sites.

These sites do not have apps to access your information, so I am forced to go
through their site. And without being able to receive the verification codes, I
can not access my accounts. Again, this is on multiple sites.

This is what I have tried so far.
1, Restarting my iPhone.
2, Doing a forced restart of my iPhone.
3, Made sure both sms and mms are turned on in the settings.
4, Checked to make sure the numbers are not in my block list. Actually at this
moment, I have no numbers in my block list.
5, Reset my network settings.
6, Made sure I have both wi-fi and cell connections.

These sites send you a verification code by text and that is how you finish the
log in process. And the text message is the only choice.

I am out of ideas, so I wanted to see if anyone else ever had this issue, or if
anyone had any ideas of what else it could be. Getting on to these sites are
important, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

By the way, I am running 16.3 on an Iphone 14 Pro.

Thanks,

Chris

The other volume levels are controled using the volume up and down buttons.

Hi, Group.

When I am on hold for the next volunteer in Be My Eyes, I hear nothing unless I

When I activated a link for a group call in WhatsApp, I did not hear VoiceOver
until I raised the volume.

Is this a different volume from Voiceover volume that we control with
volume-up-/down button? Siri also has a different volume level from VoiceOver
Volume.

How are these other volume levels controlled?

Thanks!

RE: IPhone not announcing callers

2023-02-11 Thread Rob Armstrong
Here are a couple of things you can check.

If you have the ringer volume set too loud, you may not hear the caller ID even
if it is being announced.

Make sure your phone is not muted. Wake up your phone and unlock the screen.
Hold the phone flat with the screen facing up. Use your fingernail to slide
the mute switch up. If the switch moves, the phone should say "unmuted". If
it does not move, you might slide the switch down to hear "muted" and then
slide it back up to hear "unmuted". This will confirm that the phone is not
muted.

Call your cell phone from a land line or get someone to call you to see if you
now hear the caller ID.

If you still do not hear the caller, check Settings. Go to Settings then
Phone. Make sure that Announce Caller is set to Always. Then repeat the test
to see if you hear the caller ID.

I could not consistently get Siri to do this but I was really surprised when it

Entering Patient Information In Ellume COVID Home Test

2022-10-05 Thread Rob Armstrong
I need some tips or confirmation about entering my patient information in
the Ellume COVID Home Test app.

I am using an iPhone SE 2022 and iOS 15.7. My typing style is set to touch
typing. I typically find the letter I want to enter and lift my finger to
enter the letter.

When I enter my first, middle, and last name, I hear a click when I lift my
finger on each letter. But I cannot confirm that I have entered the correct
information.

Here is my biggest problem. There are picker items for the month, day, and
year of my date of birth. I adjust each of the picker items the the correct
value and double-tap to hopefully enter the value. But when I look at the
edit field, the original values of the picker items are still there. The
cursor is positioned at the end of the date (which is today's date). There
is no delete button to delete the value. What do I need to do to be sure
the values of the picker items are used as my birth date?

I appreciate any help that will get me through this process.

RE: Sending Money with the PayPal App

2022-10-02 Thread Rob Armstrong
Just keep entering the digits you want without entering a decimal point. For
example, if you want to enter $75.50 you just enter 7550 and the app will move
the decimal point as you enter more digits. In the example for $75.50, here is
what VoiceOver will say.

When you enter 7 Voiceover will say 7 cents.

When you enter 5, VoiceOver will say 75 cents.

When you enter 5, VoiceOver will say 5 dollars and 75 cents.

When you enter 0, VoiceOver will say 75 dollars and 50 cents.

Subject: Sending Money with the PayPal App

Hi All,

Using an SE2020 phone running iOS15.7. I tried sending money using the PayPal
app for the first time yesterday and found I couldn't type in the amount I
wanted to send.

I was using a K380 keyboard, if it matters, and the field was just called,
Label, that you enter your amount into. It's not a text field that you double
tap on to hear, text field is editing, like you normally hear when you are
entering text.

Anyways, when i typed the number 7, to enter 75.00 , voiceover reported 7 cents
then when i typed the 5 voiceover reported 75 cents, and that's all I could do.
I couldn't navigate this field, or at least I couldn't find a way to navigate
it myself.

I ended up using my PC to send the money. If anyone knows the correct way to
enter the money amount into the PayPal app, would youplease share the steps?
All input is greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. Go Dodgers!

I don't know if you turn your phone often, but really you shouldn't. iPhones
are designed to be on all the time and the don't have to be shut down at all.
From time to time you may end up having to turn it off and back on if you have
strange issues or of course there could be a time when you simply run out of
battery and the phone turns itself off, but I literally go weeks and sometimes
months without turning my phone off and back on and the only time I have to put
in my passcode is when for some reason Face Id isn't working a few times one
attempt after another (same goes for Touch Id) or for some other strange
reason. But typically I again often go days without having to enter my passcode

It's been asking for the Pass Code for months now.

When I power up, it says Pass Code is required when phone starts up. My memory
is that it started asking for it after I had set use Touch ID on the App Store
instead of Apple ID. I turn on the phone much more than I get apps and had
tried to change it to must use Apple ID on App Store in hopes of not being
asked for the Pass Code to turn on the phone, but I still had to use the pass
code. I THINK I could use Touch ID the other day when I installed a free app
from the App Store and did not have to type my Apple ID but it wasn't a good
day and my memory may not be correct.

I don't want to get rid of the Pass Code entirely; having it helped with some
mishap I had. I just would prefer not to have to type it in every time I use
the phone.

Good Evening:

The recent Face ID hit or miss thread caught my interest since, like the
original poster, I have an iPhone SE 2020 and like Touch ID.

The SE2020 is my first smart phone and is my back up with my land line being
my primary phone. I have the cell powered off most of the time and might power
it on for texting or to check the weather app etc. I have Apple ID, Touch ID,
and Pass Code set up and have purchased an app on the App Store. The way
things are set up, I have to type in my pass code when I power up. I can
usually do it correctly the first or second time so typing it isn't the
problem; I'd prefer to use Touch Id instead if possible. I am not in a work or
school situation and my house does not resemble Grand Central Station and I do
not have a lot of personal information on the cell.

The original post did say locked and not powered off. When I first got the
cell and was trying to follow along with a tutorial, the phone kept saying
locked what sounded every 30 seconds and locked became a "dirty"

word and I never investigated what it was good for.

Rotor is about 4 items down in the VoiceOver settings.

The items for Screen Recognition and Navigation Style are the last 2 items in

rotor.

After you have done this, double-tap the back button in the upper left corner

There are some settings you should probably check. I copied these tips from
other emails I had saved.

Go to Settings, then Accessibility, then VoiceOver, and scroll down until you
find a series of settings (Image Description, Screen Recognition, and Text
Recognition. In this case, turn both Screen Recognition and Text Recognition
off. Text Recognition is supposed to sniff text out of images, but I for one
have found it a bit problematic. There are times when Screen Recognition _is
helpful, but in other situations, you want to turn it off. If the app is
already accessible, Screen Recognition should be turned off. You may want to
add this to the rotor or Quick settings so you can turn it on if you encounter
an app that does not have labels on the buttons and fields.

“Navigation Style” is a feature that is new with iOS 15, and has to do with the
way items on a given screen are read. “Flat” is what you could term the
default, and reads all of the items on the screen just as they are laid out.
In other words, it’s the way screen navigation has always been done.
Therefore, in this message, having navigation style set to flat allows one to
read all of the items on the screen in the normal way. If, in this message, I
set navigation style to “group”, only a few items are read—and only those that
relate closely to each other are read. In fact, if you flick around on the
screen with Navigation Style set to Group, you will encounter very few items at
all. _Touching the screen will access a few additional items. Mail is, for
all practical purposes, inaccessible with navigation style set to group. Group
would be a bit more useful if you were in a website that had a wide variety of
items on it. So, as I have stated previously, you always want to have
navigation style set to “flat”, and screen recognition turned off, unless you
find yourself missing a lot of what you know is there.

If Lyft is available in your area, consider downloading the Lyft app and
setting up an account. When you are requesting a ride with Lyft, you reach a
screen where you confirm or enter your pickup address. There is also a field
on that screen where you can include a note for the driver. When you
double-tap the button, you see some pre-defined entries for the beginning of
the note such as In front of, Gate code, and others. But there is also a
choice for you to enter your own note. I think you have 60 characters. After
you finish writing or dictating the note, you double-tap the “Add note for
driver” button to save the note and include it in the ride request.

The next time you request a ride with Lyft, the note you wrote before is now
one of the choices in the list of notes. So you don’t have to write the same
note every time.

RE: No speech on speaker of iPhone 13 Pro

2022-08-12 Thread Rob Armstrong
The first thing to check is to make sure the phone is not muted. The mute or
silence switch is a small switch probably on the left edge of the phone near
the upper left corner. You change the switch with your fingernail.

Hold the phone flat with the screen facing up. Have the phone unlocked with
VoiceOver on. The phone is muted when the switch is in the up position. To
unmute the phone, push the switch down. If the phone is unlocked and VoiceOver
is on, it will say "unmuted".

Nreetings. I'm having a problem with my new iPhone 13 Pro and VoiceOver. When I
have earbuds plugged in, I get VoiceOver just fine. But, when I unplug the
earbuds and try using the phone's speaker, I get no speech or VoiceOver sounds
at all. I have tried toggling VoiceOver speech off and back on, and turning the
phone off and back on. Neither solution works. I'm running iOS 15.6. Does
anyone have any ideas?

RE: help with Kings corner app please

2022-08-11 Thread Rob Armstrong
I have been playing Kings Corner for years. Quite often when I place a card on
a stack, it doesn't actually move. I always double check where I placed the
card to make sure it is there. If it is not there, I simply pick it up from my
cards and try to move it again.

I played Kings corner for quite some time but had the same problem that I’m
having now. When I go to play a card and I double tap on it and hold it and
move it to drop it it doesn’t drop under card that I want to put it on. Is
there a workaround for this? Is it a double tap and hold? Do I have the right
game? I saw a lot of different ones but I chose to download, I should say
re-download, the one that I had before. I really like the game, but I’m really
frustrated with not being able to move the cards properly. Thanks for any help
with us.

Subject: Three questions concerning cell boosters

Hi.

Cell service for me isn’t the best inside my apartment and a small area
outside. I’ve gotten a cell booster that I’m hoping will help the situation.
With this in mind, I have some questions.

First, what I got is supposed to cover up to 4,500 square feet. Does this
include outside where I live? It doesn’t need to do much to fill in the poor
signal.

How difficult is it to get it up and working? I’m hoping I can do it with no
sighted assistance.

Lastly, I know these things are carrier specific. I’ve gotten one that should
work. My question is does it need something like a sim card to work, or is it
like a repeater, just rebroadcasting what it receives?

Those are my questions. Any info anyone has is appreciated.

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

RE: Choosing symbols

2022-08-05 Thread Rob Armstrong
When you are in an edit field, double-tap the Numbers button in the lower left
corner of the screen to bring up the numbers. Along with the numbers are
several of the most often used punctuation and symbols.

While the numbers keyboard is active, double-tap the Symbols button in the
lower left corner of the screen just below the Letters button. I find these
buttons by exploring the screen rather than swiping. I cannot tell you the
swipe sequence.

RE: Another question about notes app

2022-07-20 Thread Rob Armstrong
Double-tap Settings.

Double-tap Accessibility.

Double-tap VoiceOver.

Double-tap Typing.

Swipe right until you reach Touch Typing and then double-tap.

Double-tap the Back button in the upper left corner of the screen several times
until you get out of Settings.

Now bring up any edit field. You should be able to find the letter you want to
enter and then lift your finger to enter the letter.

While you are in the Typing settings, you may want to review the Typing
Feedback section to make sure you receive the feedback you want when you are
typing.

Sounds like you’re doing everything right to me. After you double tap on the
add note button, make sure you’re in the edit field and it has focus. Type what
you need to type into your note, and it should appear. You should see it when
you swipe around or explore the screen. Changing the roter to characters or

I, too, was unsuccessful raising the ringer volume using the volume up button
even though the corresponding setting is turned on. I suggest you go into
settings and adjust the ringer volume up more. When you change the volume in
settings, the phone will play the ring tone at the new volume. Even if you
then lower the volume back to the level it was at before, adjusting it in
settings may solve the problem.

Hi.

I gave my girlfriend an iPhone X. It works great, and when I call her number,
her iPhone rings. Problem is the ring tone volume is very low. I tried to have
her use the volume up button to increase the volume, but the tone stops when
she does that. What I don’t understand is when she goes into the sound

Any ideas? I think this is a simple fix, but I don’t know what to do.

RE: Getting the ring tone volume louder on an iPhone X when the phone rings

2022-07-03 Thread Rob Armstrong
I, too, was unsuccessful raising the ringer volume using the volume up button
even though the corresponding setting is turned on. I suggest you go into
settings and adjust the ringer volume up more. When you change the volume in
settings, the phone will play the ring tone at the new volume. Even if you
then lower the volume back to the level it was at before, adjusting it in
settings may solve the problem.

Subject: Getting the ring tone volume louder on an iPhone X when the phone rings

Hi.

I gave my girlfriend an iPhone X. It works great, and when I call her number,
her iPhone rings. Problem is the ring tone volume is very low. I tried to have
her use the volume up button to increase the volume, but the tone stops when
she does that. What I don’t understand is when she goes into the sound
settings, the ring tone is at a great volume. How do I tell her to increase the
ring tone volume? I called Apple, and they finally recommended making a trip to
the Apple store.

Any ideas? I think this is a simple fix, but I don’t know what to do.

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

RE: Siri and text messaging

2022-05-13 Thread Rob Armstrong
Whenever I use SIRI, I hold the home button on my SE3 down until I finish
talking. That has always worked for me. I don’t use “Hey Siri”.

When writing a text message, I use the dictate icon that is to the left of the
space bar. With VoiceOver, I use a 1 finger double-tap to start dictation and
a 2 finger double-tap to stop dictation.

I have just noticed that in iOS 15, the two finger double tap to start and stop

has a ping sound. Did the ping sound on the iPhone get replaced by a haptic
engine at some point when starting and stopping dictation?
Thanks

Google Maps - Turn Off Extra Speech While Driving

2021-07-25 Thread Rob Armstrong
I mostly use Google Maps to get directions for sighted drivers. I get the
normal navigation directions from the female voice that Google Maps uses.
But I also get much too frequent additional guidance for the next turn from
my VoiceOver / Siri male voice. I have checked, and the setting in Google
Maps for detailed navigation directions while walking is turned off.

I think I remember turning something on some time ago, but i can't remember
what is was. And I can't find any other setting to turn off.

I appreciate any thoughts what I can turn off to stop the extra speech from
the VoiceOver / Siri voice.

RE: Downcast and Alternatives

2020-08-10 Thread Rob Armstrong
I have 3 suggestions for Downcast.

1. At the bottom of the list of unplayed episodes of a podcast there is a
"View other available episodes" button. Double-tap that button to reveal
episodes you have already played. You can scroll down the list to find the
episode you didn't finish listening to.

2. Move back so you are displaying the list of podcasts you have subscribed
to. Double-tap the "More" tab in the bottom right corner of the screen. Then
double-tap the Settings button. Locate the "Episodes to keep" heading.
Double-tap the item just below this heading. It might say "All unplayed, but
it might say something else. After you double-tap, you will be in a list of
choices for which episodes to keep. One of your choices is to keep all
episodes. When you have made your choice, press the "Back" button until you
get back to the items in the More tab. Then double-tap the "Podcasts" tab in
the lower left corner of the screen to get back to your list of podcasts.

3. The choices you make in Settings in the More tab are global settings that
apply to all of your podcasts. You can also customize the settings for a
specific podcast by double-tapping that podcast to open the list of episodes.
Then double-tap "Podcast Settings" in the bottom right corner of the screen.
There you can change any settings that you want to be different for this
specific podcast.

Subject: Downcast and Alternatives

Hi,

I’ve been using Downcast and generally enjoy it. The two features I enjoy most
are the ability to use chapter support as well as the ability to export
episodes to Dropbox, but one thing that drives me absolutely nutty about
Downcast are missing episodes. This morning I was listening to an episode, took
the dog out, and lost Internet connection. When I came back in, the episode I
was listening to had vanished. It seems to get rid of episodes it thinks I have
finished listening. I’m glad it thinks it’s being helpful, but I’d like to keep
the complete list of episodes available regardless of play time.

First, is there a way to fix this issue on Downcast?

Second, are you using an alternative podcast player you know will give me the
two features I love and avoid the feature I despise? I keep hearing Jonathan
Mosen talk about Castro, and my only hesitation to check it out is the
subscription model. I don’t mind subscription plans, but for this sort of
thing, I would rather pay a large lump sum up front.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Joe

Hi,

It would be great if someone could confirm this or else tell me what I’m doing
wrong.

Whenever I get a call from an unknown number for which I want to create a new
contact, I find I can’t type anything into any of the edit fields such as first
or last name or email. This is true with both the onscreen keyboard as well as
a bluetooth keyboard.

Simply adding a new contact (not from an unknow number) works fine.

If this is a bug I will report it to Apple.

Thanks,

RE: Adding a recent call to Contacts.

2020-02-21 Thread Rob Armstrong
Focus on the phone number in the Recents tab of the Pone app.

Swipe up or down until you can double-tap "More Info".

There are buttons near the bottom for "Create New Contact" and "add to Existing

I like to use iTunes to perform iOS updates, especially for a major update.
You get more status announcements during the update process using iTunes.

I do not understand the question about setting a default voice. Please tell us
more about what you want to do.

iCloud - Entering The 2-Factor Authentication Code

2019-12-12 Thread Rob Armstrong
I have received a dialog box on my computer twice in the last couple of days
asking me to sign on to iCloud. After I enter my password, I receive a text
message on my iPhone with an authentication code that I have to enter. I
have done this twice, but the message says that I entered the wrong code. I
am very sure that I entered the correct code from the text message.

I have signed on to iCloud using the 2-factor authentication several times
before. But now it doesn't accept the code I enter.

Any hints what I can do?

RE: ID caller

2019-11-22 Thread Rob Armstrong
These instructions are using the last release of iOS 12.

Double-tap Settings.
Scroll down and double-tap Phone.
The first item under the Calls heading is:
Announce Calls. VoiceOver will say what the value is for the Announce Calls
item. iOS 12
Double-tap the Announce Calls item and choose from the following options:
Always
Headphones and car
Headphones only
Never

Double-tap Always.
I recommend pressing the back button in the upper left corner a couple of times
to get back to the main Settings screen.
Then press the Home button or use the gesture to close the Settings app.

RE: need advice

2019-11-01 Thread Rob Armstrong
I have not updated to iOS 13, so I don't know if things have changed.

This is based on the last version of iOS 12.

Go to Settings.
Double-tap Touch ID and Passcode.

You have to enter your Passcode before you can continue to see the next screen.
The first heading is "Use touch ID for".
Turn off any of the items that are on.

The next heading is "FINGERPRINTS".
There will be a button like "Finger 1" for each fingerprint you have created.
You can double-tap the button. Then you will find a button to delete the
fingerprint.

On the next page of Touch ID and Passcode settings, you will find entries for:
Turn Passcode off
Require Passcode

Hope this helps.

RE: When edit fields are dimmed out

2019-10-15 Thread Rob Armstrong
You probably need to find the tab or link that will allow you to edit the
payee. You probably cannot edit the payee while in the process of making a
payment.

If you can't figure it out, let us know which banking app you are using. Then
maybe someone has the app and can help further.

Subject: When edit fields are dimmed out

Hello again, Friends,

My banking APP, like so many we get used to, in a recent update has made it
very difficult to do some tasks that used to be easy. I want to send some
spending loot to one of my grandsons who's in college but doesn't use Zelle.
But I can't find a way to change his address to the place he's living at
school. I can check the appropriate box to make a payment to his account, but
his name is dimmed out so that I can't double-tap on it as I used to do. When
fields are dimmed out in voiceOver, what can one do? I've contacted my bank.
I've tried to add him again as a new payee, and nothing seems to work. Any
ideas or suggestions will be very helpful. I am reluctant to ask for sighted
help on this, and shouldn't have to. Thanks in advance for any help in this.

Peace & Blessings,

RE: latest itunes update

2019-10-01 Thread Rob Armstrong
If you open iTunes on your PC or Mac, you will most likely get a dialog box
that says a new version is available. There will be a link in the dialog box
to download and install the update.

When you press the space bar or Enter on the download button it may
automatically do everything. Or it may take you to the web site where you have
to download the update.

Play A Folder Of Music Using The Phone Drive App

The only thing I have not figured out is how to play an entire folder of

Does anyone else use Phone Drive who has figured out how to play a folder of

Touch in the body of the email message.
Use the rotor gesture until you reach "Text Selection". If you move through
all the choices in the rotor without hearing "Text Selection", then you need to
first go to Accessibility Settings for VoiceOver and add "Text Selection" to

Now that you are on "text Selection" in the rotor, swipe up or down until you
reach "Select All" and double-tap.
Use the rotor gesture to move to "Edit".
Swipe up or down until you reach "Copy" and double-tap.

RE: Voicemail says no voicemail but when someone calls me it says my voice mail is full

2019-04-26 Thread Rob Armstrong
I am working from memory, so you may have to play around with the screens a
little.

Obviously, start by double-tapping the Phone app.

Double-tap the Voicemail tab at the bottom of the screen.

Double-tap the Edit button in the upper right corner of the screen.

You will probably find a lot of voicemail messages you have already listened to.

Swipe down with 1 finger on voicemail messages from people that you want to
delete. The first time I did this, I did not find a Delete option. But after
I double-tapped on “More Info” and then hit “back” or “previous screen”, then
the “Delete” option showed up when I swiped down on the Voicemail.

Unfortunately, you have to swipe down a couple of times on each message to get
the delete option.

Go through your old voicemails and delete the ones you no longer need to keep.

After you finish, you will find a button for “Deleted Voicemails” at the bottom
of the list.

Double-tap this button.

Then scroll to the end of the list of deleted voicemails.

Double-tap the “clear all deleted voicemails” button at the bottom of the list.

Double-tap the confirmation button.

Now you have freed up space for new voicemail messages.

Good luck.

Rob

Good afternoon:

I am using the iPhone 8. My voicemail says no voicemail however, when

I call and try to leave a message my voice mails says that it is full. I guess
I never actually deleted all my old messages; however, now I don't know how to
get in and do that since I don't have any voicemails. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

RE: moving an app from 1 page to another wasn't announcing direction

2019-04-17 Thread Rob Armstrong
Here is part of a post I found on Applevis.com.

Moving Apps Becomes A Drag, Sort Of

Last autumn, Apple introduced a new way of moving apps around the various Home
Screens via the rotor. The primary change to this method is that dragging of
multiple apps is now an option. In iOS 11, instead of swiping up to “Arrange
Apps,” the touchscreen VoiceOver user must double-tap and hold to invoke “Edit
Mode.” For Bluetooth keyboard and Braille display users, you can still press up
or down arrow, or space with dot 3 or 6, to move to “Edit Mode”.

Once you are in “Edit Mode,” you still will need to first locate the app you
wish to drag. You have the options of delete, drag, or stop editing apps. Note
that if you are in “Edit Mode,” and you wait about thirty seconds, iOS 11 will
automatically exit you from this mode. If you wish to move an app, find it, and
then select “Drag.” Then navigate to the place you wish to “Drop” the app, and
choose the appropriate option. Your options are to drop it before, after, or to
create a folder with the app VoiceOver focus is set to. You can also drop an
app within a folder.

The final option is to “Add To Drag Session.” This option will allow you to
move multiple apps at once. When multiple apps are added, you can still “drop”
them before; after; add the app currently in focus to your “drag session”; add
to a folder if one is in VoiceOver’s focus; or create a folder with these apps
and the app currently in focus. This comes in handy when you wish to drop
several apps into a folder, and wish to add apps at the same time from various
Home screens. I’ve only tested adding four apps to one “drag session,” but
found it worked effectively.

Moving apps around is good practice for using the “Drag and Drop” method on the
iPad. While it works on the iPhone and iPod Touch for the purposes written
above, it’s also possible to, for example, add a file in the Files app to a
drag session, switch to the Mail app, and attach that file to a message you are
composing by “dropping” the file in the Mail application.

Also, here is a podcast that demonstrates moving an app.

So, could you please explain to me what I might have been doing wrong?

RE: Cardio blood pressure monitor

2018-12-21 Thread Rob Armstrong
Yes, the Qardio blood pressure monitor does support multiple users.

Note that the name of the monitor begins with the letter Q and not C. It is
spelled Q a r d i o.

You download the Qardio app and pair it with the QardioArm blood pressure
monitor.

I put a podcast on Applevis 3 years ago describing the setup and use. Below is
the link to the podcast.

does it have it’s own review screen? Does it support multiple users? Any other

Help For Apple Podcasts App In iOS 12

RE: What can cause delays in texts being received?

2018-10-12 Thread Rob Armstrong
I had the problem of delayed text messages a few years ago with AT I found
that AT had closed a small store that was near my house. When they closed
the store, they obviously removed the AT cell phone tower near the store that
provided customers with excellent reception while shopping in the store.

When my contract with AT was up in a couple of months, I switched to Verizon
and have not experienced any text message delays or dropped phone calls.

I use Verizon on my IPhone 5s once in a while a text will show up saying
3 hours ago or 10 minutes ago. It probably happens once or twice a month so
isn't a huge problem but is puzzling. This sometimes happens with voice mails
too. I figured it was a Verizon glitch of some sort I have found no patern to
when it happens. . If it happened consistently with the same person or at the
same time of day, it might be easier to figure out but no such luck.

I’ve seen this happen sometimes too, especially with Android phones. Maybe
their model of phone is slower at receiving texts, or TMobile may have spent
some time sending the message.

You probably need to change the setting for your preferred typing style. Go to:

I think the choice called “Standard typing” will work the way you want. You
move your finger around the screen until you find the digit or letter you want.
 Then double-tap to enter it.

RE: Phone carrier 1 of 4 bars question

2018-09-06 Thread Rob Armstrong
It means you have a weak cell phone signal at that particular location. With
only 1 bar, you may experience a dropped call.

When you are outside or at a different location, check you signal strength
again. It will probably be stronger meaning you have 3 or 4 bars.

Hi everyone! Like the subject line says what does it mean when it says 1 of 4
bars?

RE: 3 important questions

2018-08-28 Thread Rob Armstrong
I will tackle the second question about changing the volume.

There are 2 ways to change the volume.

The first way does not involve the rotor. In fact, I do not have “volume” in
my rotor. Let’s say you want to change the volume of VoiceOver. Do anything
to get VoiceOver speaking. Press the volume up or volume down button on the
left side of the phone while VoiceOver is talking to increase or decrease the
volume. You can use this method to change the volume of the phone ringer,
playing music or podcasts, and just about anything else.

In order to be able to flick up or down to change the volume, you first need to
add “volume” to the rotor. If you are very new to using the iPhone, the rotor
may not be the first skill you want to learn. Follow these steps.

Double tap Settings.

Double tap General.

Double tap Accessibility.

Double tap “VoiceOver On”.

Flick right until you reach “Rotor”.

Double tap “Rotor”.

Now you are in a list of things you can add to the rotor. If an item also says
“selected”, it is already added to the rotor.

Flick right until you locate “Volume”.

If it is not already selected, double tap “rotor” to select it. This adds the
item to the rotor.

When you finish adding other things you want in the rotor, double tap the
“back” button in the top left corner of the screen several times to return to
the main settings screen.

Since I do not have “volume” in my rotor, the next instructions may not be
absolutely correct. But here is how I think it should work.

Twist the rotor until you reach the “Volume” setting.

Then, when you want to change the volume of something that is currently talking
or playing, flick up or down.

Remember that flicking up or down changes or acts on whatever setting the rotor
is on at that time.

Hope this helps.

Rob

listers,

As I am a beginner to ios I need to ask you these questions?

If I get an email with an attachment, what should I do to save it? and when it
is saved, where should look for it please?

The other one is, why evrytime I flick up or down to increase or decrease the
volume nothing happen? Do I have to do something from the settings?

The last one is, how to create a folder where to save the notes, or documentts?

Thanks in advance

Anthony
Subject: 3 important questions

Sad to say, no. That is something I've wanted since I got my first iOS device
in 2009.

You can do this on a computer using outllook and possibly with gmail, and
probably more.

Hello,

Is it possible, on the iPhone, to create a rule so that e-mails from a
particular group, such as this one, will automatically go to a specified

I want incoming messages to land in a specified folder.

Thanks,

Help With iCloud For Windows And Outlook

2018-04-20 Thread Rob Armstrong
I am setting up a new Windows 10 computer. I installed iCloud 6.2.2 since
the first dialog in the most recent version seemed less accessible.

I opened iCloud on the pc and signed in to my Apple ID. I found check boxes
for photos, bookmarks, and iCloud drive. I want to sync my Outlook calendar
and contacts with my iPhone using iCloud. All of the articles I have read
from a Google search say there are check boxes for contacts and calendar,
but I cannot find them.

I did use iCloud for contacts and calendar in Outlook on my old PC. I have
not yet copied the iCloud folder from Outlook on the old PC to the new PC
because I thought setting up iCloud on the new PC would create the folders
in Outlook and copy down the contacts and calendar information.

If I copy the iCloud folders to the new PC, would that enable the check
boxes to appear in the iCloud dialog box? Do you have information or an
article containing the steps to move iCloud to a new PC for contacts and
calendar? I specifically do not want to sync email using iCloud.
