Re: Text Grabber & Image to Text
Hi, I've had Text Grabber on my various iPhones for at least four or five years now and recommend it highly to my students and to friends/acquaintances who are looking for a relatively simple, effective and inexpensive app for scanning printed material. I'm not sure what its price is in the app store; the highest I can recall was ten bucks and I've often seen it on sale for five bucks or under. That gives it a very high bang-for-the-buck factor in my view. I wouldn't use it for heavy-duty scanning chores; that's when I use my PC. But for a quick and easy scan of several pages, especially for someone who can't shell out 100 bucks for KNFB Reader, Text Grabber's hard to beat. Go for it. Happy scanning! I find it text grabber to be a very effective app, I use it for screening my snail mail. That is, I use text grabber to check the return address on envelopes that I think may be worth scanning with my computer. Re: Text Grabber Not Capturing The OCR With The StandScan Pro
Hi Eileen, Obvious things first: are the lights on? Are you using mains or battery for the lights and, if the latter, do you have the 12 V battery supply? Next, positioning the phone is crucial! I presume you have the stickers that came with the stand Scan Pro, these are useful for positioning the phone correctly every time. I did kind of cheat with mine, I got my partner to check on the best position before applying the stickers. However, I know that other people have managed this without any sighted help. Once you have your stickers in place, the lights on, you should be good to go! Because I have a case that is easily removed, I tend to take the phone out of it for best results. Finally, it is also worth buying Prizmo. Sometimes, one or other of these apps has problems or, perhaps, a faulty update, in which case, you will have an alternative. HTH and I hope you will keep us posted as to your progress, Sandy Sent from my iPhone On 13 Jul 2014, at 05:00, Eileen Misrahi eileen.misr...@gmail.com wrote: Hello All, I finally sat down to organize my paperwork using Text Grabber and the StandScan Pro. Eileen, Her Majesty's following your posts! Now I understand that something seems to have changed and that you are, of course, already very proficient with the OCR apps and the stand ScanPro. I will go in forthwith and check I had the latest TextGrabber update and tried out. If I have similar problems, I will let you know. HRH, Sandy PS if TextGrabber is broken We shall not be amused! Re: Text Grabber Not Capturing The OCR With The StandScan Pro
Hello again Eileen, Well, it seems I have the latest versions of both TextGrabber and Prizmo. I just put them both through their paces with the stand ScanPro and then again Freehand. Firstly, let me say, I find a little bit of erratic behaviour in both apps. Prizmo, four example, keeps bouncing me out back to the home screen. I emptied out my app switcher and found things improved. TextGrabber seems to be behaving okay here. However, particularly TextGrabber, gives me that error message when I take a free hand shot more often than not. By the by, I leave the flash on in TextGrabber. Can I suggest two things for you to try, if your problem with TextGrabber persists? Firstly, reset your phone, by this I mean, either turn off completely leave it for a bit and turn it on again or do the press of the home button and power button held for 10/20 seconds etc. Secondly, delete TextGrabber and download it again. I have experienced, with Prizmo, problems after a faulty download. Two other things to think about, perhaps… is your camera lens nice and clean? And do you have a nice lot of space available on your phone for the processing process? Re: Text Grabber Not Capturing The OCR With The StandScan Pro
Hi Sandy, I want to thank you again for all of your suggestions to troubleshoot this. After reading all of the threads, I wanted to double check and perform some general maintanence on the phone. I am using an iPhone 4 with 32 GB. The storage left on the phone is 9.6 GB, so there is still plenty of storage. I started only with turning off the phone with the power switch and then back on. I have one of the original StandScan Pro, so it didn't come with stickers back then. I used pennies at first to measure the correct position of the phone and camera through the aperture hole on top. My method of stickers are 3/8 inch clear velcro that I use for my clients. In a sense they are stickers. I do have a battery pack, but I usually use the AC adaptor and plug in for the best results. With the first version of the StandScan, I don't think the 12 volt was offered until later on. This all said above, I just tested out the StandScan Pro with Text Grabber. All is working like it should except when there's no text to OCR. It was you who inspired me to be persistent so I could perfect the ability to OCR to capture written materials while I was at a clients home and needed to obtain essential medical information. Oh by the way, I do have Prizmo and several other OCR apps installed on the phone, but the two that gets my votes for productivity are Text Grabber and Prizmo. Thanks again for brainstorming and getting me back up to stuff. It's happy scanning now Best, Eileen Sent from my iPhone On Jul 13, 2014, at 7:11 AM, Sandratomkins sandratomk...@googlemail.com wrote: Hello again Eileen, Well, it seems I have the latest versions of both TextGrabber and Prizmo. Re: Text Grabber On Sale
Hi, The Store News app will breakdown into different categories that are listed in the app store. In each category, it indicates free apps, as well as apps that have been reduced. It's a way to find all sorts of things that one would like to purchase for their iPhone or iPad. I use to open the app on a daily basis, but now I am lucky to review the categories for new apps maybe once a week. The app is free to download. Re: Text Grabber: Is it broken?
Yes, when you're in the share menu area, the closes the menu button does not work with voice over on. In the history area, to delete items, to the left of each item is a checkbox. Double tap each item to engage the check. You can check as many items as you want. Once you have selected the items you want to delete and go to the bottom and hit the delete button. This way you can do multiple deletes. Chuck (mobile) Pleez x cuze enny tie ping or spelin air ores. One thing you can do when you were in the share menu, is use the copy command which will close the menu. Unfortunately, this will also put the text on your clipboard, but if you're not using the clipboard it should be okay. Chuck (mobile) Pleez x cuze enny tie ping or spelin air ores. Re: Text Grabber: Is it broken?
hi Chuck, When I was in the history menu, and flicked left, I didn't hear VO announce a checkbox. Is this just a given and that we are suppose to assume this? I will check this out a little later when I have some time. Thanks for pointing this out. Oh by the way, I use my clipboard fairly frequently with MBraille, so I don't want to make an error to close out Text Grabber that way. Thanks. I just tried this this is what happened. I went to history, and then went to edit. I flick right and got the following message. Delete September 16, then the title of the document then switch button off. I double tap the screen which put a checkmark in the box. And then I can delete it by hitting the delete button at the bottom of the screen. The problem is, if you flick right again it really doesn't tell you what's happening. It is a better system because you can do and multiple document delete, but it needs some work with voiceover. I think you and I should both right to TextGrabber and tell them our problems. Re: Text Grabber: Is it broken?
hello Chuck, Thanks for confirming this. In the morning when I have a clear head, I will compose an email to the developers. At first, I thought I was missing something in the history menu, but I guess not if you are getting something similar to my observation. In the previous version, you didn't have the option to select more than one scan, but the delete button was there with a confirmation screen that followed it. Well, I haven't decided if I will place this on my roll back app list until it is fixed. The list is starting to grow quickly. Unfortunately, the update description before pressing that button didn't state if there were any UI enhancements. I guess we all live and learn. I'll take care of this tomorrow. The best way to find out current cost for any app is to open the App Store, double-tap on search on the bottom, double-tap on the edit field at the top, type the name of the app, and double-tap search in the lower right corner of the keyboard, or press the return/enter key on the bluetooth keyboard. RE: text grabber and prizmo
Hi Larry, I haven't used Prizmo or Text Grabber for rounded labels, but I find that another fantastic app and one I use almost more than Tap Tap See now is Talking Goggles. It has a video mode which means it continuously recognizes things as you move it and it will do short bits of OCR. I have used it very successfully on cans or medication bottles. As for QR codes, here is what Wikipedia says followed by the link to the full Wikipedia article: QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional barcode) first designed for the automotive industry in Japan. A barcode is an optically machine-readable label that is attached to an item and that records information related to that item. The information encoded by a QR code may be made up of four standardized types (modes) of data (numeric, alphanumeric, byte / binary, Kanji) or, through supported extensions, virtually any type of data. The QR Code system has become popular outside the automotive industry due to its fast readability and greater storage capacity compared to standard UPC barcodes. Applications include product tracking, item identification, time tracking, document management, general marketing, and much more. A QR code consists of black modules (square dots) arranged in a square grid on a white background, which can be read by an imaging device (such as a camera) and processed using Reed-Solomon error correction until the image can be appropriately interpreted; data is then extracted from patterns present in both horizontal and vertical components of the image. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_Code Regards, Sieghard From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Larry Lumpkin Sent: Monday, June 10, 2013 6:24 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: text grabber and prizmo I was reading on the app store site and it seemed that the newest release of prizmo was a step backward and got a very negative review. RE: text grabber versus text detective
Hi Larry, Both of these are OCR apps, another popular one is Prizmo. Text Detective apparently doesn't recognize an entire page in portrait mode and most people on the list prefer Prizmo and/or Text Grabber. You can find reviews for many of these apps on http://www.applevis.com. Here are the app store links for Prizmo, Text Grabber and Text Detective: Prizmo: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/prizmo-scanning-ocr-speech/id366791896?mt=8 Text Grabber: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textgrabber-+-translator/id438475005?mt=8 Text Detective: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textdetective/id541494875?mt=8 By the way and to use Prizmo as an example, it is super easy to find these app store descriptions, just do a google search for the following: Prizmo on iTunes Then if you are using Jaws or another screenreader with quick navigation, go to the top of the screen, then type 2 for heading level 2 followed by 3 for heading level 3. This takes you to the first search result and I don't think I ever came across a case where the first search result wasn't the iTunes app store page for the app I was looking for. Once you press enter and the page loads, use 1 for heading level 1 or simply h for heading to find where the description starts. This is just as easy and quick as to write a message asking about what a particular app does, you usually get a better, more complete answer and you can read the description, see the price and read reviews all at the same time. Hi Esther, Thanks very much for the detail email. That help. looks like Prizmo it is then. :) Cheers On 08/06/2013, Esther mori...@mac.com wrote: Joanna asked about CamScan, which David identified as being an inaccessible app, but in fact, the app that was recommended on the ScanBox Kickstarter page is not CamScan, but CamScanner+. This app also has a free, lite version. It is partly accessible, in that a number of the controls can be used with VoiceOver, but many of the processing buttons are just labeled as button. In addition, the layout of this app is more like the arrangement of Prizmo before the last version update in terms of the number elements to navigate through. Unlike Prizmo and TextGrabber, but similar to many OCR apps, including Text Detective, you must have your text in the proper orientation in order for the OCR to work. So if you do not have vision, you will have to try rotating the image that was taken, either with the processing control buttons in the app, or by taking another picture, and then reprocessing the image. Please understand that the features that make a a good scanning/OCR app for sighted users may be different from the ones viphone list members would prioritize. CamScanner+ uses OCR to create searchable PDF files. For many users, the image format of a document is the primary format they will use, and they only want it to be a searchable PDF -- meaning that they can type in some words in the document to pull up the image file. For many purposes, like travel receipts for business purposes, they have to submit an actual image of the document. In any case, CamScanner+ is optimized to provide searchable PDFs with the OCR (a feature that Prizmo also has), and to optimize the automatic adjustment of color and background of scanned documents to make the images more readable. It is not designed to optimize providing a text version of the material. I suspect that we have all tried other scanning apps. Some that have been used and discussed on list include Perfect OCR and Say Text. Some that were suggested but addressed as to why they are not suitable for visually impaired users, although they receive good ratings by sighted users include Genius Scan. You can search the archives for other examples. The apps that are most discussed and recommended on list are usually the result of having tried (many) other app options that do not work well. A large number (if not most) scanner apps for the iPhone require interactive adjustment of the image area, which blind users cannot perform HTH. I like the fact that you can easily edit the text to correct any errors if you intend on saving the scanned document. On the other hand, if it's just a pizza menu from the local pizza joint you might leave it as is but at least the choice is yours. I should say too that this is my first OCR program but I was impressed with it not to mention I grabbed it awhile back when it was free for a day. CamScan has a free version. I tested it last year and it was not accessible. I just downloaded and tested it again, and it is still not accessible with VoiceOver. When VO is running, none of the buttons appear to activate, even when using a double-tap and hold pass through gesture. As there are a few accessible alternatives which work quite well, I did not try turning VO off to activate any buttons followed by turning VO back on. Also, it could be that the ads on the free version may be causing the unresponsiveness. However, as there are accessible alternatives, I am currently not willing to purchase one of the two alternatives which cost. Text Grabber is an OCR app like Text Detective. For Text Grabber to really work properly, you really want to use the StandScan Pro device. Prizmo is another OCR app. The developers of Prizmo have recently added page aligning features for people with visual disabilities. Re: What other scanning apps? was: Hi,Re: text detective and text grabber was: RE: text grabber sale
Joanna asked about CamScan, which David identified as being an inaccessible app, but in fact, the app that was recommended on the ScanBox Kickstarter page is not CamScan, but CamScanner+. Re: Text grabber
Ciao Sandy, unfortunately, I must confirm the Gabriel's comment. The quality level of translation is not acceptable. I even doubt it could give the sense of the original text. All the words are litterally translated without paying attention to the context where they are part of. Some verbs are translated at the infinitive form that in italian language sounds different than the right one, while some expressions, despite they are very simple, are translated in a wrong way, such as little bells clang against the door translated a poco campane fragore contro la porta something like a few bells clang against the door or something similar. Summarizing, this translation sounds very similar to others coming from many automatic translators. Even myself, in spite of my very poor english, I guess I'd have better done. Thank you very much indeed, for your precious work of testing, comparing, informing all of us. Don't hesitate if you need further help for italian language. Warmly, Mario. Thanks for the scans, Sandra. Once the beast and I become good friends, I'll most likely get this, especially as I have net friends who do me the courtesy of using English when they write to me, even though it isn't their primary language. I'm monolingual (forgot the French and German I studied long ago) but I think it would be nice to return the favor. Re: Text grabber
Ciao Gabriel, Thanks, I was hoping you would cast an eye over this for us. So, is it your impression that this would be the sort of thin one might expect from a basic translation app? or do you think that it is worse than that? I got the impression that, in a case of need, it would convey the literal meaning, but not with any sense of style of the target language. So, for anyone considering using, at least the Italian option of the Prizmo translation functionality, the advice must be, don't expect too much and that the final result will be obviously the result of a translation app. Wonder how the Swedish did! Re: Text grabber
Grazie a te Sandra. I think the translation might be with a good quality, compared to the average quality of the automatic translation apps, running at present. I've not a large experience with this kind of apps but, assuming the Google translator is not bad, then, also this used by Prizmo isn't. Anyway, as you correctly said, there is no style at all... Those are the literal translated words, liked together with a few grammar. Buona serata. Gabriel. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: text grabber version 3 is released
Hi All, I posted a detailed summary of version 3 TextGrabber changes in the app's entry at the AppleVis web site. As Eileen says, the OCR is faster and there is a single camera button for taking pictures, just above the home button. All labeling is much, much better, and includes hints. There's an earlier comment post of mine describing the buttons on the main screen and their functions, so you can get a feeling of the before and after labeling. Basically, I think that this app is now usable by someone who is an entirely new user, who is just following the information in the app. Here are some other changes beyond the better labeling, hints, and the better navigation of the menu options for what you can do with the recognized text. There are enhancements for low-vision users, such as the ability to select larger size fonts in Settings for the displayed recognized text. VoiceOver speaks directions for using the interactive cropping feature, for those with sufficient vision to apply this feature. The organization of the Settings screen has been simplified. There are no longer entries to turn linked services like Facebook, Twitter, and Evernote on or off for you to enter login information. Instead, the user who selects one of these options from the menu of available options for the OCR'd text will be directed to Settings to enter the login and account information. The info vf button contents with version number and email contact has been integrated into the about entry on the settings screen, and this button has now become user manual with recommendations for use. Re: Text Grabber and Prizmo have different strengths.
Hi Sandra. Is this scanning done with textgrabber or prizmo. I have been scanning books for many years, and I can tell that cookbooks are the most difficult books to get a sensible result from. I am really impressed that you can get such results with a IPhone and standscan. Best regards Annie. In fact, you couldn't follow the recipes because the quantities were illegible. Now, in many ways, the apps we have available to us on the iPhone, are in their infancy. obviously, they are a fraction of the size of, say, Kurtzweil and, also obviously, a fraction of the price. plus, now we are dealing with a portable solution. When you want to read a letter, something simple with no columns etc, both Prizmo and Text Grabber will do the job, especially when using the StandScan Pro. However, imbedded columns and symbols for grammes/ounces/fractions etc can prove daunting for these pocket sized OCR packages. Now that we have a way to position the phone exactly, and we can ensure perfect lighting conditions, when things go wrong it is more to do with the scanning/OCR capability of a given app rather than the physicality of scanning. Also, there is one other variable: to wit, when we use a flat-bed scanner, the book we are scanning is facing down onto a flat surface and gravity alone will heple with ensuring the flatness of the text. Now and again, we may use pressure on that book to make sure that the text nearest to the spine is readable. This we cannot do when the book is facing up toward the phone. So, until apps such as Prizmo or Text Grabber get really clever and learn to deal with distorted text, we aill always have trouble scanning two pages of a book, apart from when we are scanning roughly half way through, because only half way through will allow you to hold the pages equally flat. With all this in mind, I tried both Text Grabber and prizmo on my The Big Book of Tomatoes. I wanted results that would mean I could follow the recipes with ease. However, this was my second shot, the first showed the half frction for the lemon, but was less good elsewhere. So, why did it mistake the fraction in one scan and not in the other? Why is it that when you keep the book in precisely the same position and the lighting the same, is it that you get differing results? This is, obviously, more to do with software than the physical nature of scanning. There wasn't much between the two, but I would suggest that having both apps will afford the best chance of getting perfect/near perfect scans depending upon the layout/formatting of the text. Also, if you are away from your StandScan pro, prizmo is still much easier to use, it is more forgiving of slight skewing of the text. Now, i am also interested to see how i can improve on rounded surfaces. E.G. tins/bottles. Thus far, they prove difficult with tins doing better than bottles of wine, this is because the diameter of a wine bottle is less than the usual tin, so less curvature and less distorting of the text. What is nice here is that we are beginning to speak of more difficult aspects of scanning and not of the simple stuff which is very doable now with these apps and the StandScan Pro. I think I have read that you are awaiting yours? If I am right, please do let us know how you do with recipes etc, will you? Many people here may not be interested in recipes, but may be interested in, say, mathematical formulae or scientific symbols etc, getting good results with recipes will help in working toward this IMHO. In the end, for good enough results, I had to use only single page shots. These pages all have paragraphs of text plus columns of ingredients. Below is my best result, there are two significant mistakes, where you will hear 'tilda it should read half (so half a lemon). Also, when it says s minutes it should read 5. The rest is perfect, it starts wheE. half way through a sentence and finishes at the bottom, half way through a sentence. We are getting there, these results are much, much better than those obtained by me and my expensive Kurtzweil and flat-bed scanner all those years ago. I do know that

Hi Sandy, I am not sure that my comment will be off topic, but here goes. Way back when I was in grad school, I would have a book that would not scan very well with either OCR products. I would pull the binding off so I could lie a single page flat down on the flatbed scanner to get the optimal result. I only bring this up is that this step may need to be used again until you or someone else will figure it out. I punched holes in the margins, so I could preserve the book for later use. I will be receiving my StandScan today and I am looking forward to getting perfect or near perfect scans of various written materials. Once I have some confidence with the device, I will begin to experiment with recipes. Thanks for all your hard work in making it easier for all us us to use Ocr on our iPhone. Fred, I don't think so. I think, were they to do so, it could work against us, as they might find themselves on tramlines, so that when we changed the nature of our reading material, they might try to turn Sherlock Holmes into a deep-pan pizza! Re: Text Grabber and Prizmo have different strengths.
Hi Eileen, You are, of course, right! Dismembering books is sometimes the only way to go, even when using the full Flat-Bed plus PC option, but if we can manage to scan without the destruction, then so much the better! One way to scan from a new paperback without causing too much damage to the spine, is to shoot one page at a time while keeping the other side of the book virticle, which is what I did in the sample I sent. This is all getting very exciting! So, while we are in nostalgia mode (and I do hope not to be put back on moderation for going off topic!) I was, about 4 years ago, prior to the emergence of the iPhone 4, my first iPhone, attending a special adaptive technology fair in Cork. I moved from stand to stand, playing with the various items for sale. Scanners, GPS devices, Braille displays, book readers etc. At each stall I asked howb much? and, always, the answer was somewhere in the thousands! I was assured that they were ll as cheap as possible given the special nature of their application. Well, I got mad! I had heard that the iPhone 4 would, potentially, do all of these things for me as an almost invisible fraction of the price and so I said I'll be back! And my iPhone will do all this firtually for free! They smirked and wished me luck. It was for this reason, among others, that I have dedicated so much time to making this work and not only work for those of us who were fortuante enough to be able to use the Apps free-hand, but for all of us! I reckon that, at last, we have got there! Things can only get better from now on. So, to anyone here who receives their StandScan pro and can't get good enough results, please contact the rest of us, or, if you like, me off list, and between us all we will be able to help, because this is doable, that is for sure! Hope your SSP comes today, Eileen, and that it is what you expect of it. Sandy. Re: Text Grabber and Prizmo have different strengths.
Hi Sandy. It was very good, I guessed that it was prizmo that has made such a good result. I can tell a funny thing about scanning, a little offtopic, but interesting too. I had a very difficult cookbook, and my finereader pro 11 for windows, did not do very well, finereader 11 is one of the best programs for scanning. I bought prizmo for the mac for half of the normal price, I think it was about 150 dkk, I had saved that terrible cookbook as a picture, I scanned it with prizmo, I got some amazing results with numbers e.g. 1/2, other things where not as perfect, but that had more to do with the size of the scanned book, it was a3. Prizmo is an app that both on the mac and also on IOS has been developed a lot over short time, I expect a lot of that in the future. I hope my standscan pro will arrive some day, I will love to play with it. I hope that some days the scanning apps for the phone will scan perfumes creams and such things, that can be really difficult to get any results at all. Yes and tins too. What about barcodes? Can the standscan pro be of any help for locating and scanning barcodes a little quicker, it takes me a long time to get them located and scanned. Best regards Annie.
