Update on Lightning Cable Purchase to Avoid This Accessory May Not Be Supported Message

2015-02-20 Thread Alan Lemly
Hello List,

I posted several days back about getting the error message This accessory
may not be supported when charging my iPhone 6 by plugging its lightning
cable into a 6-foot USB extension cable attached to my computer. It was
obvious that the USB extension cable caused the error because it did not
appear when plugging the lightning cable straight into a USB port.

I wanted a cable at least 6 feet or longer with a USB male connector on one
end and the Apple lightning connector on the other to provide an easily
accessed charging point since my mid-tower computer is on the floor. I
checked the Apple Store first but they charge just under $30 for a 6-foot
lightning cable and I thought that was too high.

After getting comments on this list, I purchased from Amazon the [Apple Mfi
Certified] / ZerolemonR Lightning to USB Data and Charge Cable/ 3m for
Iphone 6 (4.7) / Plus (5.5) /5s / 5c / 5, Ipad Air / Mini / Mini2 / Ipad Air
/ Ipad 4th Generation, Ipod 5th Generation, and Ipod Nano 7th Generation [2
Year Warranty] - White. Sorry for the long title but that's copied straight
from the Amazon website. This 3 meter ZeroLemon cable which is Apple Mfi
Certified is about 10 feet and has a 4.4 Amazon reviewers rating and a
2-year warranty. I'm very happy with its fit and finish as the cable is
thicker than the Apple-provided one and it charges my iPhone 6 quickly with
no recurrence of the this accessory may not be supported error message.
Here's a link to it at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M5JG8ZK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie
=UTF8
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M5JG8ZK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?i
e=UTF8psc=1 psc=1

It sells for $14.49 from the default vendor listed by Amazon but I ordered
mine from Bastexwireless who was one of the other suggested vendors and paid
$13.68 and got free shipping without having to have an order over $35. I can
highly recommend this cable.

Many thanks to Sieghard and others who posted guidance on my original
thread.

Hi Sieghard,

Are those cables you're referencing longer lightning cables? Sounds like
they must be based on your Amazon Basics description. If so, have you used
them with an iPhone 6 since this problem only began with my new iPhone 6?

Thanks.

Hi Alan,

I doubt it is a problem, but why not spend $10 or $15 instead of $30 or more
and get a longer cable from Amazon or Monoprice. I have a couple of 10 foot
cables from Monoprice and also one of the Amazon Basics Lightning cables
(I think it's 8 or 10 feet as well) and they all work great. I believe the
Monoprice cables are around $12 and the Amazon maybe $15, can't remember.

Hello List,

I reported a day or so ago that I'm getting a This accessory may not be
supported message from my new iPhone 6 when I charge it using its lightning
cable plugged into either a USB extension cable connected to my computer or
one connected to the Apple AC adapter. At least one other confirmed this
message and got a 2-meter lightning cable from the Apple Store in order to
avoid it.

I can now confirm that I only get this unsupported accessory message after
my iPhone is fully charged. I believe others have also reported this same
result. So, I decided to save the $30 on the 2-meter lightning cable and
continue to use my USB extension cables to provide more length since the
phone does charge with this arrangement.

If anyone thinks my approach could be detrimental to my iPhone, I'd love to
hear your comments. Thanks.

I don't like the practice, but I don't see how it could be made illegal.
Companies have the right to use proprietary components. Companies can
also void warranties if approved peripherals aren't used. Apple doesn't
have a monopoly on smart phones, and if you want a smart phone that uses
an industry standard connector, you have plenty of options.

What I was saying is exactly what you're pointing out. Other posters are
saying, I think, that Apple puts the chip into their cables while other
manufacturers do not, thus causing the error to be triggered. But that
would create so many complaints that it would really cause a ruckus.

I'm not sure what you're saying in this message. It is the case that
approved Lightning cables have a microchip in them to authenticate that
they are Apple approved. This is easy enough to look up on the web with
a Google search. The wikipedia page at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_%28connector%29 for example says
the following:

Official Lightning connectors contain an authentication chip that makes
it difficult for third-party manufacturers to produce compatible
accessories without being approved by Apple.

I've seen this discussed on this list multiple times. I suspect the only
reason it doesn't come up more often is because most people are probably
using the cable that came with their Apple device or they're getting an
Apple approved cable.

I have no idea how many complaints Apple gets, but I'm sure it's easy
for them to turn them away and just let those people know they need an
Apple approved cable.

On 02/12/2015 11:22 AM, Charles Rivard wrote:

If that were the case, every cable that did not have this chip in it

I doubt it is a problem, but why not spend $10 or $15 instead of $30 or more
and get a longer cable from Amazon or Monoprice. I have a couple of 10 foot
cables from Monoprice and also one of the “Amazon Basics” Lightning cables (I
think it’s 8 or 10 feet as well) and they all work great. I believe the
Monoprice cables are around $12 and the Amazon maybe $15, can’t remember.

trigger such a message, and there would be hundreds of thousands of complaints.
On this list, anyway, this has not come up often.

  Hi Charles,
You are right, there is a difference between the two cables. The Apple
product has a little chip inside that lets the phone know that this is an
approved cable. The non-Apple cable does not, hence the triggering of the
unwanted announcement.

2015-02-12 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alan,

I doubt it is a problem, but why not spend $10 or $15 instead of $30 or more
and get a longer cable from Amazon or Monoprice. I have a couple of 10 foot
cables from Monoprice and also one of the “Amazon Basics” Lightning cables (I
think it’s 8 or 10 feet as well) and they all work great. I believe the
Monoprice cables are around $12 and the Amazon maybe $15, can’t remember.

Re: Update on USB Extension Cable and This Accessory May Not Be Supported Issue

Hi Alan,

Nah it’ll work fine. Just remember if you have too many problems turn the
phone off let it charge for a couple hours and then recheck. You’ll be fine.

Re: Update on USB Extension Cable and This Accessory May Not Be Supported Issue

2015-02-12 Thread Charles Rivard
I don't think that this is a scheme to make money. There must be something
different about that particular cable that causes the alert.

In order to give flexibility and strength to cables, they are made of stranded
wire, and if only one strand breaks, it can cause problems. This might be what
is happening, although this is conjecture on my part, based on my past workings
with making cables using a soldering iron, electronic solder, wire and jacks.

Update on USB Extension Cable and This Accessory May Not Be Supported Issue. Neal's additions

2015-02-12 Thread Neal Ewers
Charles, I have not experienced this at all. Obviously others have. I don’t
know if this is done intentionally, but if so, I am of your same opinion. This
is not the first proprietary thing Apple has done. The fact that their
headphone/microphone jack is wired to have the microphone portion of the jack
not work with just about any standard microphone on the market is another case
in point. I guess companies have a lot of room to do this kind of thing. There
was a day when a popular reel to reel dictating recorder actually reversed the
right and left channels so no other recorder could play their recordings.

I will investigate this more when I get my iPhone 6, although I hear people
saying that it also happens on the 5 plus. I am using a 5 and have, as I said,
not had this problem.

Neal

Purposefully making either a device that detects differences in a cable, or
making the cables in such a way to prevent the triggering of such a message
would be a money making scheme that should be illegal.

Messages?

  Hello List,

I learned through experience with my iPhone 5 to only use Apple cables and AC
adapters for charging my iPhone. However, I've always used a 6-foot USB
extension cable to plug into the back of my mid-tower desktop which sits on the
floor in order to make one rear USB port accessible from the top of my computer
desk.

I never received any messages from my iPhone 5 when charging it by plugging
its lightning cable into the USB extension cable. With my new iPhone 6, I've
gotten the This accessory may not be supported. error message on my phone
several times when doing this. I don't get the message immediately when
plugging in but only after a few minutes and the times aren't consistent. The
USB extension cable must be the culprit because when I plug the lightning cable
directly into a front USB port, the message does not recur.

I've decided that the iPhone 6 must be more sensitive to extension cables and
was wondering if anyone else had experienced this.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

This typically happens when the cable is not certified by apple. Often,
non-certified cables will work for a short period of time and then this error
will come up. I have also noticed that this error comes up shortly before the
cable does not charge the device. I recommend the AmazonBasics lighting cables.
They are certified and a lot stronger than the Apple cables. You can purchase
3Ft or 6Ft cable lengths, the 6Ft cable is really nice.

iPhone 6 More Sensitive to This Accessory May Not Be Supported Messages?

2015-02-10 Thread Alan Lemly
Hello List,

I learned through experience with my iPhone 5 to only use Apple cables and
AC adapters for charging my iPhone. However, I've always used a 6-foot USB
extension cable to plug into the back of my mid-tower desktop which sits on
the floor in order to make one rear USB port accessible from the top of my
computer desk.

The USB extension cable must be the culprit because when I plug the
lightning cable directly into a front USB port, the message does not recur.

I've decided that the iPhone 6 must be more sensitive to extension cables
and was wondering if anyone else had experienced this.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

2015-02-10 Thread Charles Rivard
What results do you get if you use the extension cable in a front port, or when
you plug the lightning cable into the rear port? Could the rear port be the
issue? These results would confirm. I'm just thinking as I type, here.

Hi,
I absolutely can corroborate your findings almost to the letter though my
extension cable a well-known name brand one to boot was plugged into Apple’s
own AC Adaptor.
As soon as I took the USB extension cable out of the mix I have never gotten
that message since. My work around for this was to purchase the 2 meter (6
ft.) USB to Lightning cable directly from the Apple Store. It by the way seems
to be slightly thicker and thus sturdier than its shorter sibling in my view.
I hope this helps.

Judy,

If your iPhone 5 is still under warranty with either the apple provided one or
through purchased AppleCare, apple will replace the lightning cable at no
charge.

Thanks so much for this corroboration. I guess I should also invest in one of
those two meter lightning cables from the apple store but I'm almost afraid to
ask what they cost.

Re: iPhone 6 More Sensitive to This Accessory May Not Be Supported Messages?

2015-02-10 Thread Donna
I only get the message this cable may not be supported once my iPhone has
completely charged. I'm using an iPhone 6 and experienced the same with my
iPhone 5. Yes, I'm using an Apple certified charging cable.

 Hello List,

I learned through experience with my iPhone 5 to only use Apple cables and AC
adapters for charging my iPhone. However, I've always used a 6-foot USB
extension cable to plug into the back of my mid-tower desktop which sits on
the floor in order to make one rear USB port accessible from the top of my
 computer desk.

The
USB extension cable must be the culprit because when I plug the lightning
cable directly into a front USB port, the message does not recur.

I've decided that the iPhone 6 must be more sensitive to extension cables and
was wondering if anyone else had experienced this.

Thanks in advance for any comments.

However, I'm now starting to get it from time to time when charging using

Is anyone else getting this message and under what circumstances? How well

communicates with the battery system in the iDevice to best manage the

not have this chip, and will shorten one's ultimate battery life. I only use
Apple certified cables for this reason.

Also, Apple certified wall adaptors have regulator technology which stops
current flow if there is a strong power draw as well as surge protection.
This system communicates with the lightning chip to best manage the iDevice

Re: compressed air, was - This Accessory May Not Be Supported

2014-08-13 Thread Alan Paganelli
As a note here, for those who can't see to read the label on cans of
compressed air, the air in these cans are compressed but there is also a
chemical in the can that is very poisonous to small children. Children
think that all that's in the can is air and want to stick the straw that
these cans come with for getting in to tight areas in their mouths. As they
say, keep out of reach for small children.

That having been said, cans of compressed air works great for blowing off
dust on computers, and external keyboards.

You can try the compressed air, but a friend of mine kept having this message
come up on his iPhone too. He took it to an apple store and they said the whole
speaker to the top of the phone wake-sleep button needed to be replaced. He has
a 4s. The person helping him took off the back and took out a piece that goes
through the phone from speaker to wake-sleep and slipped another in. It has
never popped that message again. He said the cost was about 90 dollars, but if
you have insurance on your phone it will probably not cost at all. Hope this
helps.

Do you carry your iPhone in your pocket a lot? I heard quite often from people
on the Today in iOS Podcast that those who do may gret lint and stuff into
their port and that this could cause issues. You can use compressed air to blow

I'm used to getting the above subject error message when charging my iPhone 5
using the third-party lightning cable I bought from Amazon on the cheap.
However, I'm now starting to get it from time to time when charging using the
Apple cable that came with my iPhone.

I'm curious with what others have experienced with their Apple cables and how
long they've lasted. I take extremely good care of my stuff almost to the point

Is anyone else getting this message and under what circumstances? How well are

Well, I've had my lightning cable sense I got my iPhone 5s on October 20, 2013
so it's just months short of a year. I got my iPad Air in January of this
year. Both cables are still in perfect condition. I too take very good care
of my equipment and cables and connectors. Even when I traveled on the road
with a band I did the same thing. I guess when it comes to cables and
connectors I just hate to have to buy another one if I can at all help it. I
did buy an extra lightening cable though as a backup. It's still in it's
packaging it came in. I never opened it up.

Hi, Alan,

I just recently acquired an iPhone case with a battery charger in it and it's
really neat. However, from time to time, I also get that error message with
that. I can't remember the brand name of this case, but a lot of the time I
have to press the charge button on the case to activate the charge again.
However, I turned Bluetooth off tonight and I got the phone to give me a full
charge in the case. I don't know if that has anything to do with the error
message or not. I know someone who has the same case as I, but I don't know if
he had ever gotten the same message.

RE: This Accessory May Not Be Supported

2014-08-11 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
David,

Can the older Apple wall jacks that came with the 30-pin connector be used with
the lightning ended cables?

The Apple certified cables with lightning adaptors have a special chip which
communicates with the battery system in the iDevice to best manage the battery
charge and condition. Non Apple certified lightning adaptor cables do not have
this chip, and will shorten one's ultimate battery life. I only use Apple
certified cables for this reason.

Also, Apple certified wall adaptors have regulator technology which stops
current flow if there is a strong power draw as well as surge protection. This
system communicates with the lightning chip to best manage the iDevice or Mac
battery condition and charging.

I take extremely good care of my stuff almost to the point
of being OCD so I'm concerned that this message is starting to occur too
frequently.

Is anyone else getting this message and under what circumstances? How well are
your Apple cables holding up?

Thanks for any comments.
