Hi, I don't want to speak for Raul or Cara, but in many cases having at least a few of the emails in a message helps when somebody refers to a previous message in a thread without explaining more. It is up to each person when posting a new message to the list or replying to a message to highlight and delete the rat's tail of previous emails. However, as long as new replies are put at the top of the messages as I am doing here (your message is below) it doesn't really matter. You can just read the new reply and then move on to the next message. Where it is difficult is when people write their reply at the end because once it gets to the list there is then still the message footer underneath it. Fortunately there are not many people who do this and it is not standard email practice to write one's reply to a message underneath the original message. By default every mail program I have ever used including the mail app on my iPhone places the cursor at the top of the message if I use the Reply To function. If you reply from an iPhone or iPad and want to double check, you can always double tap in the message body and Voiceover will say Insertion point at end or Insertion point at start. Obviously you want the insertion point (your cursor) to be at the start so your reply appears before any other messages. Including previous messages in replies to the list

I have been reading rave reviews about the Logitech K760 solar keyboard, and David Woodbridge has a podcast on it in which he demonstrates how easy it is to switch between connected devices using the F1, F2, and F3 keys. Has anyone used this keyboard? I'm particularly interested in learning to what extent its keys and commands emulate the Apple Wireless Keyboard. I believe there is a very high correlation between the operations of these keyboards. One of the reviews I read mentions keyboard software. I assume there may be some kind of on-screen menu in which keyboard options can be set, and I'm guessing it may not be VoiceOver accessible. Anyone know about this software option? Suggestion for getting rid of unwanted items in shopshop history
Unfortunately deleting items from the shopshop history is inaccessible. A workaround I have found is to rename any unwanted item to z1, z2, etc. so they go to the bottom of the list. To do this go to add an item to the list, tap the edit button, and finally tap the item you want to get rid of. A text field will come up where you can rename the item, at which point you put in z followed by some number so it goes to the bottom of the list. Good Morning Robert, Does that keyboard have any iOS specific buttons? I have a Freedom iConnex folding keyboard and while it doesn't have a row of function keys along the top (one has to use the number keys in connection with a FN key), it does have dedicated volume up and down, Play/Pause and Skip/Forward and Rewind/Back buttons as well as a Home key which basically does the same as pressing VO+H. I like the idea of having one keyboard which I can use for my Apple TV as well as iPhone, but I also like these special keys although controls like play/pause, volume and forward/rewind are available via the function keys as long as the keyboard has dedicated function keys. Having a dedicated home key is nice, but not essential. Hi DJ, As Reggie stated, once you double tap on an email to open it, Voiceover focus will be on the first line of the message body, typically the greeting/first line of the message. You can flick up or down with 2 fingers to read the entire message, both works in this case. You can also read the email by flicking right with a single finger. It think from what I tell this reads by paragraph. Lastly, you can turn your rotor to lines, words or characters (the latter is really only important if you want to spell out a particular word) and then flick down with a single finger to read by whichever unit you set. RS Games by and large do a wonderful job, but their Monopoly game does not correctly follow the rules. That may or may not matter to some, but it matters to me. like Any List It not only lets you create grocery lists of your own and be able to share those lists. For example, I can email that shopping list to my wife or share it in real time with her. This is useful because either one of us can add items with out having to waste time placing phone calls. You can also create your own categories as well. There is also an excellent recipe section. If you want to, you can send the ingredients list of the recipe to the grocery shopping list although I have not as of yet tried that feature. The app is accessible with voice over. As far as I know, this app meets your wish list needs. Here's the best part. It's free. Well, it was when I installed it but even if it costs a buck, it would still be very much worth it. I get this behavior occasionally when the message hasn't finished downloading. Are you reading your mail over wifi or cellular data? Have you explored around with your finger or flicked right from the top of the screen to see if the message body is there? You shouldn't have to do this, a two finger swipe up should do the trick, but to find out what's going on in this case, it may be worth exploring the screen a bit. Building computers is definitely an acquired skill, and takes patience, persistence, and perspiration. I know, I've been doing it for forty years, back when you used to buy kits from Radio Shack and build these things on breadboard-style circuitboards and wire them with wire-wrap tools. As technology progressed and got smaller, we all just got used to manipulating smaller and smaller bits. I'm not sure I could place a processor properly in its receptacle, but if you practice with junk and burned-out components that make no never-mind if you break them, you can learn the skill. There are plenty of opportunitites to do it, because there are plenty of folks who have hardware they're just dying to commit to the local dumpster you can play with and learn on. Now, as for your podcast link, thank you so very much for posting it. I've been wondering about iOS7 and what it has to offer, not only the Voiceover-user community of iPhones, but generally. The person who produced it seems to know what they're on about, and I'm sure they didn't divulge anything they should not have, elsewise they'd be in hot water with Apple for sure. I can't believe there were thirty-seven messages written about this topic, none of which would have been necessary if anybody had listened to the program. Thinking that it was one I hadn't heard before, I downloaded it and listened. I got about two minutes into it, and realized I had indeed heard it before. If any of you who complained about Joseph's having posted this link would have done the same, you all would have heard what I heard the first time, and then again just now, that this release was already in public beta, there were no non-disclosure agreements violated, nothing was being disclosed that should not have been, information about it was all over everywhere, and that Shawn was simply going to spotlight, if you will, the accessibility features that had changed, something that most other YouTube videos would doubtfully have covered. All of you people who bashed Joseph for posting the link really need to grow up and get your facts straight before jumping on your keyboards and writing about things of which you know nothing. You wonder why there is so much dissention in the blind community about anything at all? It's because, while everybody has an opinion, nobody seems to have the facts. dice world question for a friend
Hello everyone. A friend of mine had dice world once, she uninstalled it, and i convinced her to get it again. Smile. She got it, and was able to retrieve her password, but, she can't recall her username. Does anyone know if or how she can recover it? I listened to the podcast, and I never heard it stated that this was a public beta. The podcaster also never explained how he got the beta himself. Although he acknowledged that there's a lot of information on IOS 7 available out there on the web, he also admitted that there are people out there who don't feel information on IOS 7 should be distributed unless it's done by Apple or until IOS 7 has been released. It isn't clear to me, after listening to the podcast, whether this is a public beta or whether an NDA has been violated or not. I'm OK with Cara and Raul determining what is and isn't appropriate for the list. I just think our facts need to be accurate, and we shouldn't claim things are publicly available or that NDA's haven't been violated when the source we're pointing to doesn't even address those points. BTW, I don't think there's any more dissension in the blindness community than there is in the general public. We're all people and anyone can voice an opinion without or without facts to back it up and the blind don't have a monopoly on this behavior. I'm curious, does the 37 messages include the half of dozen messages you contributed to the thread? Just curious, since I haven't been counting myself. I don't know what Podcast you were listening to but he did not say it was in public beta. He also told people that if they didn't want to listen to something which was essentially illegal they should turn it off. Regardless I'm glad I was given the opportunity to listen to it. moderator's note about recent list stuff
Hi all. this is a reminder about the list rules. I'm going to implement a system where the list rules are made available to everyone. I would have thought that talking about illegal things was a no-brainer, but I also realize that people's interpretation of that can be subjective. So, unfortunately it will have to be spelled out. Also, below is a copy of a message I've sent out from time to time and it will do everyone good to re-read it if they are a veteran list member, and good to read if they are a new list member. For the record, Cara Quinn is both list owner and moderator, and me, Raul Gallegos is list moderator. So, if you see a message from either one of us asking that something be stopped, that is what that means. It doesn't mean to continue writing even if you try to disclaim it by saying, I know they asked us to stop but... Or, even though the moderator's said stop, I'm adding this ... blah blah blah. Stop means stop. I don't care if you are an outstanding list member, posting something whether you feel is on topic or not even to add something positive or to cheer me or Cara on is still doing what we asked to stop. I know that most everyone's hearts are in the right place and Cara and I both appreciate the support, but as much as it's well-intentioned, it also adds to the list traffic. If you want to say something in response to a message from something that someone wrote, write that person off list. Otherwise, just ignore it and move on. We want this list to be a great resource for information as long as that information isn't illegally obtained. I won't split hairs with some of you who might disagree. Bottom line, if it's about pre-release iOS software which only NDA agreed people are supposed to have, then don't do your illegal part by passing it along. I just have a few things to point out since we have some new users and since there have been some message postings of late which have prompted me to write. So, please read this message all the way since it may contain information which will be helpful to you as a member of this list. The following are several things to keep in mind when reading and writing viphone list messages. 1. Please don't hijack a thread. If you know that you are not hijacking a thread, skip down to the next item. If you don't know what a hijacked thread is, read this carefully because you might be doing this without knowing you are. A hijacked thread is when you are reading a message which talks about topic X, and then you reply to that message and erase all the content, and the subject and replace it with something totally different, Topic Y, and write a new message. This is a no-no because what you have done is basically butted in on an existing conversation. If this was real life, it would be like you joining a group of people who are discussing the new features of iOS 6 and suddenly asking what the best gps app for the blind is. In other words, you started talking about something totally unrelated to their existing conversation. On the iPhone a thread looks like this. The sender, the subject, the date and time, and how many messages in the thread. One thread might have 25 messages and then you think, gee, this is a great conversation about air plane mode. So, as you are reading messages about air plane mode, suddenly, someone talks about the Grub Hub app they just got and how they ordered Chinese food for dinner and what do people think of the accessibility of Grub Hub. This has nothing to do with air plane mode. So, now the 25 messages which you thought were about air plane mode have some messages about it, and some messages about Grub Hub. Not a good thing. The resolution to avoiding this is to not hijack a thread. If you want to write a new message which doesn't have anything to do with the existing message you are reading, simply start a new message and address it to viphone@googlegroups.com and put in the subject and appropriate message. This way your topic will have its own thread and it will keep people like me happy. In short, don't use the reply button to start a new discussion. Instead, use the new button. The reply button should only be used to continue the same discussion. 2. One liner messages. There are several people who are still on moderated status because of their constant one liner messages. These include things like, thanks, I'll try that. or, OK., or, Yes, I'll do that. Of course, sometimes there might be a message where someone for example asks, is iOS 6.1.1 out? To which, there is only one answer. Yes. In cases like this, one liner messages are ok. So, in short, use best judgment. Think before you send, does what you write really contribute to the conversation and will all 1400 plus members really

Looking for mentor
I just got my first iPod Touch and am slowly working through how to use it. I accidentally found I could turn on features from my desktop computer if the device is attached via the USB . Unfortunately I did not notice where I managed that... I could use someone willing to answer my questions. I'm a quick learner... just need apooint in the right direction. I am mostly interested in the various accessibility apps, using the cqlendar and reminders, reading books, email, text. Tips? I promise I will also look through this groujp. I share my Dropbox account with the wife and I have my own folder but I would like to password protect that folder. So that anytime to open it from anywhere it needs a password. Ex... iPhone app, PC folder anytime it opens it needs a password. To me I think Sean was breaking the Nda. Apple has never released betas of iOs or Os X as public, and I can't see that changing. I actually am for this and wished other companies would follow suit. My god! Why does every post on this list end in this type of combative interaction style. This just proves there are many blind people who have an inordinate amount of extra time in their lives to waste on this type of information exchange. Sorry, but that is my tentative conclusion at this point. Look, you win! Ok? What do you want? There are no metals for the wittiest, thoughtful, fact-finding poster who ever existed on this list. This is all getting very tedious. I joined this list to learn and try to give back, but these endless posts are very, very exhausting and unnecessary. I'm not sure where they're posted, but raul Gallegos posts guidelines to the list when he thinks they're warranted. You can check the list archive for these messages. Search for messages from Raul with things in the subject line like moderator, please read, reminder and so on. The link to the list archive is in the footer of every message to the list. BTW, I'm all for having a published set of guidelines and having them posted to the list periodically. Unfortunately, it's often the case that those who need to read such guidelines are those who hit the delete key on such posts before reading them. That's not to say they shouldn't be written down, published and posted periodically. It just means that this won't solve all of the issues on the list. For example, here's something he posted a few months ago. they usually address specific issues, but if you glance at a few of them, you'll pick up most of the list guidelines. Hi all. I use Feeddler RSS. I use it in conjunction with inoreader.com. It's very accessible, has a lot of features, it's very configurable and it allows me to handle quite a few feeds very efficiently. Both Lire and Feeddler are good choices. There is a free version of Feeddler as well as a paid one. Lire is a paid app, but it's quite inexpensive. If you decide on Feeddler or Feeddler Pro, you'll have to create an account with one of the servers that Feeddler uses to obtain its RSS content. This is not hard to do, but it's something to keep in mind. Bear in mind that if the provider goes down, you don't get any content. Lire does not require this step. Both developers are very aware of VoiceOver users' needs, and both have designed apps that work well and are quite easy to figure out, especially if you have used an RSS reader before. I know Lire's developer actually tests with VoiceOver. Several users an I worked diligently with him recently to squash a rather annoying bug. Lire is a relative newcomer to the iOS world; Feeddler is quite established and enjoys a well-deserved reputation among the RSS community. Jonathon, the Monopoly version on the playroom is the British/european version. Which rules are you talking about on the RS games site? The only one I can think of is that you can't put properties for auction once the individual has passed on one. Would love to play a game with you some time, I'm a Monopoly finnatic. Weird behavior
HI all, VO on my IPhone 4S has all of a sudden started saying 89 battery power or 100 battery power and is not saying percentage as in 100 percent battery power. Also, under settings, it's saying weefee instead of WiFi. Anyone else ever have this happen and if so, what did you do to straighten it out? Thanks! Hi. I can't seem to do anything but gather wood and stone. I can't even upgrade the tavern beyond level 2 and can't upgrade anything else past level one. I think I got the farm to level two, but no idea how I did it. I know I have at least 180 wood as well as high numbers for stone and ore, but there never seems to be an upgrade button which actually carries out the action. In the taver, for instance, I see upgrade to level three, but when I double tap on that, I see upgrade to level four and so fourth. I'm wondering if this game is really accessible or not. Thanks. Save your money. Get the Anna Dresner and Dean Martineau book from National Braille Press, comes in lots of different media formats, not just braille. Skip all the junk about the phone, everything else is the same, or nearly so as not to matter a great deal. After you go through the book and decide you want more training, then your money will be well spent. Hi Debbie, You may have accidentally modified your rotor's punctuation settings. 1. Use the rotor gesture to select Punctuation. 2. Use an up or down flick until you select Some punctuation. 3. Use the rotor gesture to select another more predictable setting such as Characters. This last step will help prevent accidental modification of less used settings. Tip: Open settings and focus on WiFI. While on step 2 above, after selecting a setting such as all punctuation, no punctuation, some punctuation, swipe away from the WiFi setting then swipe back. You will find that, depending on the setting, VoiceOver will say the word WiFi in different ways. Hello, At the top of the screne is a Castle Buildings button. If you click on that you should get an upgrade button next to each of your buildings in the main screne of the castle. You need to click on those buttons to upgrade your buildings and people (such as your lumberjack.) You cannot upgrade from within the buildings themselves. I wrote to them about this problem, explaining all the steps I went through to get to the point where it wouldn't read the page of selections. At the time, I had not devised the work around I will outline here. They wrote back and said it wasn't a problem, I have yet to write back and assure them it is a problem, hoping the problem is fixed in IOS 7. In the Meantime, I have come up with a workaround. It is somewhat cumbersome, but it gets the job done. In my case, when I first access ITunes, it reads the initial page, with what I call a miscellaneous selection of music, movies, etc, depending on what tab I have selected.When I tap the genre button, and select a genre, the problem begins. It will read the featured, charts, and history buttons, but none of the selections. At this point, exit ITunes with the home button, remove ITunes from the app switcher. , restart ITunes. The selections in the genre you selected then will be read. If you wish to change the genre, you have to go through the same process to get it to read. If you wish to get back to the initial miscellaneous page, tap the genre button, but do not select a genre. Exit, remove from the app switcher, and restart, and the miscellaneous page is there. I told you it is cumbersome, but it gets the job done. And it proves that it is a VoiceOver problem, not that the ITunes store is not displaying the selections. Fred, yes there's the auction, the fact that a player isn't forced to mortgage to pay a debt until their next turn, which completely changes the game in an undesirable way, and some others I forget now. I really wish the Kitchens Inc Monopoly were Internet aware, as the rules are perfectly implemented in that version. Jonathon, the money the player is forced to pay goes immediately in to the other's account upon landing. One question I always wondered about though is the question as to whether a person can mortgage a property when they wish to buy another. That is to say can a person playing the game who lands on a particular property and wants to buy it, can they at that moment mortgage properties in order to pay for said property. Hi Steve, Apple has never released a public beta of iOS. To obtain a beta, you need to be a registered developer. It is true that during this cycle, it has, as has been reported by several tech publications, been possible to install the beta without the UDID of your device being registered with Apple. Even so, Apple does not distribute the software outside of the Apple Developer website. Therefore, if you got the build without registering as an Apple developer or having your UDID associated with an Apple Developer account, you've pirated the software. When you register as an Apple Developer, you sign an NDA. Do I have it? Yes, actually, I do. And here are the relevant sections. Confidentiality. I'm not at all saying that the originator of this thread acted knowingly to breach a nondisclosure agreement, and I also acknowledge that on various technology blogs, people choose to pay lip service to the NDA at best, flagrantly breach it at worst. But just because some people do it, doesn't make it right. I can understand why the list owner, as an Apple developer, wants to keep material under nondisclosure off the list. I also think regular postings of the rules to avoid inadvertent breaches such as occurred in this instance would be helpful. i think some listers need to consider that NDA is a legal document. And Apple has absolute right to keep it as for developers only. Unfortunately, there are people that do not respect such document and often take advantage of the fact that they got access to betas before any of the initial official release. I think, Kara's email, and the rest of the listers should be respected in this matter. Although some take pleasure on violating NDAs, but like most of the listers, i respect NDA and acknowledge the existant of it's legality. What I've said here are not threats, my statements are alerts or warnings. Sometimes it takes me a while to get back to the list to check in again to see what has happened in my absence. Sometimes people actually do listen. And sometimes people do get banned. You may not know what happens behind the scenes so rather than assume, just ask. :) Not only have I been accused in the past, of being too heavy handed, but now of not being heavy handed enough. lol! Through all of this, please remember, I do have a life and am quite busy much of the time, which is why having Raul here of late, has been such a Godsend. So to the people who feel that I'm making empty threats, ask those who have been banned from this list or who have had their posting privileges removed. For the record, the last thing I want to do is need to ban people or remove their ability to post. It is everyone here who makes this list the great resource that it is. Without you all we'd have no list! Ya know what I mean? No people, no list. Simple as that. :) So rather than continuing to try my, and each other's patience, I'm asking those of you who feel you need to continue the iOS 7 thread to the point of absolute annoyance, to please be considerate of your list neighbors and quite simply, calm the hell down! lol! I get it, you want to be heard and share your opinions. that's great. Let's do that in a context which is productive and relevant to appropriate discussion for this list. I.E. Let's not continue any name-calling, inference about people's lack of legal knowledge, whether the podcaster in question did anything wrong or whether you agree with Raul and I or the list rules. If you dislike the list then leave it. If you dislike the mods, sorry, but we are who we are… If you want to call other listers names or insult their intelligence or what you feel may be a lack thereof, then leave now. If you want to continue propagating information bound under an NDA, then guess what, please leave. Having said all of this, if you want to continue taking part in a great group of intelligent and nice people, then please stay. :) If you want to share your knowledge of the iDevices, then please stay. If you want to do a great service to your fellow listers then stay. -And, if you want to help this community, then please consider staying with us. :) Of all of the list rules which prohibit, the idea I wish to stress most is to be helpful and considerate. It's you who make this list what it is. It is you lending your help and support to each other, it is you sharing your time and patience, it is you offering your assistance which makes this list great. So please, show that you care about this community and be a valuable part of it. YOu will make it what it is, and we'd love to have you. :) If you want to share your opinions constructively, we welcome them. Want to make a point to spur on some good discussion? Awesome! Let's do it. You don't need to like everything, but you do need to be able to discuss your feelings about things in a way that is helpful and brings out worth-while discussion which moves people forward.
