Change of email address bulk mail out
Hi all, I'm thinking of changing from Bigpond to TPG but my bigpond.net.au email address is over 10 years old and I don't want to lose contacts. Thanks for that Ronni. Mail.app in Leopard is what we are using. I was hoping to somehow access the database that Mail.app uses. If so, you can select an email from each recipient, right-click/control-click (on the person's name/email address) to add the email address name to AB. When you have done this for each create a group in AB and drag each name to it. You can then send the email to the group. --- If you are using Mail Address Book in OSX10.4, 10.5, 10.6 you can send Group Mail. 1. Basically you first make a Group in Address Book. 2. Place who you wish to notify into the Group. 3. Then drag the group name from the Address Panel to an address field, or type the first few letters of the group's name and let automatic address completion do the rest. To ensure that recipients see neither each other's addresses nor a bogus To address, enter the group name in the Bcc field instead of To or Cc. The To field in the message each recipient gets will say undisclosed-recipients: If you want all the recipients to see each other's addresses, click the group name in the address field and choose Expand Group from the pop-up menu. Re: Telstra Cable
I've been on Telstra Cable for around 10 years. I don't have any tech problems any more. Downloads can be pretty fast but uploads are slow which is bad if you Skype videoconference. The major problem is the cap. 12 Gb doesn't allow much and I see deals advertised everywhere even on the backs of buses with ISP's with more. I would change for those two reasons. But an advantage is that it doesn't require a phone line which I don't need. I've got 2 PowerPC Macs on airport running 10.5.8 and one iMac PowerPC on 10.5.8 that will need an ethernet cable to the new router, or they will provide a wireless USB dongle to suit. Re: Old Drivers for New Printers / ramifications of bootcamp
I'm afraid the writing has been well and truly on the wall regarding Classic apps for several years, and this current trend with Canon to drop their Mac OS 9 drivers is just another sign that the time to move on is becoming pressing. As an example, an Australian software company, Jamsoft, have just binned two years' worth of Mac OS X code for their medical billing software, and now recommend that to get the beat out of their latest versions you should use an Intel Mac running Bootcamp or Parallels Desktop witn Windows XP, or to wait until they finish their Java version, which will run under Mac OS X natively, of course. While they still do provide a Mac OS 9 version, it is becoming a shadow of the Windows version in terms of features. Is this a good or a bad thing? I think it's a bit of both, but I do think it's a strategy that a lot of smaller companies will adopt in future. I would venture that not only will Classic disappear but 'marginal' Mac apps like MYOB etc will probably only come out in Windows versions with the Vendors saying Just run it with boot camp. Where it will stop, I don't know. I'm thinking that way myself because I've struggled for years with my part-time 'Mrs Doubtfire' book-keeper saying 'it doesn't work like that in Windows' and asking me to do most rudimentary Finder operations. It would be easy to swap to MYOB Windows and leave her a Windows booted machine for when she comes in. Brett Carboni Tsunami No Known taglines today

Re: G4 + Apple 17 + Dell 24 TFT ?
Gary go for the Dell 24 IMHO. I have a 17 Powerbook 1.33MHz hooked up the Dell 24. I works for me like a charm. When I go home I hook up the monitor and put the Powerbook to the side (you could use it as a second screen but I don't) and I use that with Apple's bluetooth keyboard in front of it. The mouse comes in from the side being connected to the PB. When you close the lid of the Powerbook the screen goes off. When you remove the Powerbook you have to turn the screen off. Re: Using SuperDuper to Backup to Firewire Drive
I use Super Duper with an external FW drive. I have bought FW800/400 combo drives but I don't think the speed difference is worth it unless you are working with video in which case there are better options nowadays. I bought Super Duper (well worth the price) and it enables me to use smart backup which only changes the changed files and lets me backup an 80Gb external via FW400 in about 12-19 minutes. In that way it's easy to do daily backups. Buy a 250Gb drive and partition it into an 80Gb backup partition and use the rest to store stuff. The drives can fail (don't buy 'hard box') but you'd have to be very unlucky to have both h/disks fail from normal means at the same time. That said, I have 4 externals. For the extra price for a FW800/400 combo drive put it towards getting an extra cheaper drive. 7200rpm is good. What shall we make / Intel for Mac OSX
ComputerWorld says the new PentiumD chips are shipping with DRM (copy protection hardware) embedded http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.php?id=580672002 is it true ... well maybe Apple have traveled that platform path in the lab to test it as feasible and the hardware savings and massive increase RD would be there though this would only, once again, lead to the speculation of Apple getting out of the desktop/laptop hardware market to concentrate on software and media delivery. Mac OSX running on Intel processors? Bring it on I say. I think there is a greater chance this time of it happening. We now have USB, standard hard drives, and can use standard monitors and printers. Why not a standard processor? The Intel processors always seem to be as fast (they have much more money to spend on RD because of the volume they sell) and maybe we could get something fast in the next 17 Powerbook - they G5 looks like never making it. It's all about the software UI anyway and Apple could IMHO make more money just selling OS and App software like Microsoft does, although it would be a real trick to stop people pirating it and putting it on their Tang or Wang :-) In essence, I like my make because of the way it works and looks on the screen - not because it looks cool on the desk (although it *is* nice, but I could drop the niceness - I didn't like paying $4500 for the powerbook). Maybe I've simplified it a bit but it seems to make sense. Brett Carboni Tsunami Risc free soo-shi (I was wondering when this thread would come up - let's not have any flames boys and girls)

Re: Mobile phone for 10.4?
I'm having a good run with my SE P910. It's the second one I've had. The first only lasted a day or two. Just wouldn't pair a fault with the phone, but I received a replacement quick smart. I can say that it scores 3 out of 3 regarding your requirements. But it fails most people's 4th, that being price. A bit too pricey (I managed to do a special deal). Other than that, it's a great phone. The reception is way better than the P800. Opens pdf's and spreadsheets quite well. The camera is, well, OK. Good for taking rough pics of equipment at auctions to show the chef before you start bidding on it the next day, or how the new cheeseboard looks as a guide to staff, but not much good for anything else. It doesn't look very cool unless you're the type that's impressed by the sunglasses they sell in Memphis. The flip down keyboard is a joke but the HW recognition is OK although not as good as Newton nothing is yet (had to put that in :-). But the main thing is that it works perfectly in 10.4 (downloads a little program to the phone initially), and you'll be able to easily sync Addressbook iCal by bluetooth. Brett Carboni Tsunami On 30/5/05 1:42 PM, Toby Oldham [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all I'm hunting for a new phone. My criteria are that the phone be compatible with OS 10.4, not be too big, have a functional interface (both the operating system and physical form) e.g. buttons made for medium sized fingers, have bluetooth, and have a decent standby time. Before you say anything Shay, I accept that I'll only get the proverbial 'two out of three' criteria met in a single product. :)

Re: Firewire 800 HDD
FireWire seems to be going the way of the wonderful Newton. Wonder how those who bought these pricey, although brilliant, PDAs feel about the abondonment of this platform by Apple? Pretty mad I can tell you :-) But that was Steve vs Skully politics. But I still wish my 60Gb iPod had HW recognition or some type of keyboard because it's too hard to find a particular song when there are 12,000 on it. Just the first 3 letters would be a great help, like in iTunes. end rant I think that Apple should think more than twice before trumpeting some new technologies which they are not sure to back all the way. Boy, did they ever flaunt the superiority of Firewire! Maybe they are right, but commercially a real black hole I guess that with the new iPods coming with only the USB cable, the writing was already on the walls for FW? Yes? I'd feel sorry to see FW go though .. I wouldn't worry about that. Firewire/ iLink will be here for another 4 years by which time your drive will be outdated. You *need* it for vidcams. This could be the reason why. Once it's done that first major scan then it'll be good. The scan time is dependant on how many files you have,, and how big your hard drive is. So will vary. :o) This is because Spotlight has to build an index of everything on your computer! Also worth noting is that at this time it would be good to choose your 'private' folder, ie a folder that you do *not* want indexed as it might be hard to 'un-index' at a later date, ie personal details, diary etc. (I don't have Tiger but I read it in the review) Brett Carboni Tsunami No Tiger sushi, but we do have tiger prawns

Re: 60GB iPod????????????????
A few weeks ago I posted about a problem with the new iPod. I sent it back to Apple. Just over three weeks later, I've got a brand new one back - and it has the exact same problem. This either means there's a uniform problem with 60GB iPods handling large amounts of songs, or there's a problem within my set-up in iTunes etc. I have one and yes, there seems to be a problem with iPods handling 12,000+ songs. I initially synced it to 'mirror' all my songs but it choked on all that so now I set up (a lot of) smart playlists and get it to sync with them. That's the best fix at present. The iPod still may splutter a bit with a big playlist. Also making a smart playlist of all songs with a 4 or 5 star rating will hopefully get the majority of your songs on. A bit sad though because I wanted it to carry all my songs but I think it can't handle it. Perhaps a future software update will fix it but I have a bad feeling it's the internal processor of the iPod being overwhelmed. Hope I'm wrong. Also when you have 12,000+ songs it really really needs an input device like a pen or keyboard to find them. Like a Newton sigh. Even with the best MP3 player interface it is too hard to find songs with a big library. But I can't ever see Apple doing that :-( Brett Carboni Tsunami Over 12,000 types of sushi but no way to handle them
