Happy New Year folks. I am assuming some of you have an Apple Watch (which
ever revision you have maybe matters) but I arranged a Apple Watch 5 for my
85yo Mum as a means of providing ready to hand communication and the emergency
services call up feature it has. She's slowly getting used to it. I reviewed
the online Apple information about typical battery life and with normal usage
(the online site provides details about what constitutes normal) should yield
around 18 hours before needing recharge from a full "overnight charge" - it
states.

Well, Mum hardly knows how to use it so is basically only looking at it
occasionally for telling the time and the occasional incoming text is about all
of the actual activity and she finds she is getting <10 hours before needing
recharge.

Does anyone have a similar experience and are there some tips about
configuration (pairing with iPhone) to minimise battery consumption so that she
can avoid a during-the-day recharge?

Kind Regards

At least a tenth of your HD space needs to be free to be able to run your
applications. You can keep stuff such as your photos and documents on an
external HD to free up space on your main HD.

After numerous stuff-ups, being on hold for 20 - 40 minutes at a time, not

Finally my hardware arrived on Friday afternoon.
I connected it as instructed on Saturday - guess what? It doesn’t work.
Finally have been told today that it can’t proceed as iiNet are waiting for my

I asked the caller whose job was that - she replied -“iinet’s”
Not satisfactory?

Don’t worry sir it should all be taken care of in the next 2 to 3 days.
And don’t disconnect anything in the meantime
So now I wait for up to another 3 days with no Internet (as i had to disconnect

Deleting in Mail

2019-01-28 Thread Brian Risbey
Hi Everyone

I discovered that Mail is hogging 140gb of my SSD.

So, I decided to a major select and delete.

it wasn’t successful, perhaps these selected emails (maybe 14) going back
to 2005… are now in 'transfer limbo’ now I can’t move them to the trash, as I
get the error message:

“1162275.emlx” couldn’t be copied to “Messages” because an item with the same
name already exists. and yes I can only see one email in Mail Trash, and when I
delete that email it reappears back the folder I just deleted it from.

Yes, Mail Trash is empty, have emptied Mail Trash various ways, but no
improvement.

Tried restarting machine, resetting PRAM… deleting the Mail prefences list.

'What Size’ app. indicated the V3 file in the Library for Mail was the large
file and there is evidence of Rebuilds, which are also large and old.

Bit frustrated,

What is the next step?

2019-01-17 Thread Brian RISBEY
If you turn on ‘invisibles’, looks like a back to front capital ‘P’ icon, it
shows spaces and non printing marks. You should see page breaks. You can double
click to select and delete or place cursor after one the hit backspace.

Look on the file tab near justify ...

No pocket bulge and you can make, receive and respond to any calls, emails,

Loving it. It means the the iPhone can safely stay inside, even when going off

different story. The lessons for me from the Bunnings Episode were always make
sure the phone has a decent amount of charge in it before stepping out the
door, and always make sure the phone is nestled deep within your pocket - I
think mine popped out when I was hefting bags of woodchip mulch.

I have to admit that the SE has been great. It is more compact and seems in
some ways more powerful than the 6 was.

This allows me to Bluetooth music to my choice of FM station. In the car.
Hope this helps. It does lose some volume so you need to tune your radio up a
bit more to compensate.

Rod,

Does the car have a way of connecting anything via Bluetooth? My 2009 Getz does

I found cars pre this era may have a RCA connector hidden away maybe in the
glovebox, but that’ll need a plug to go into your non existent on iPhone X ear
plug hole.

Anything much before 2006 didn’t know about anything connecting to the radio
unless it was via a cassette tape input.

You might be able to find a device that’s reads the phone via Bluetooth then
you play it via an FM RADIO frequency. That’s pretty clunky. What you really
need is a new car :-)

Aberdeen Autos are a good place for one Rod. It’s fun bidding on Wednesday
nights for your new pride and joy.

There’s a really nice Pioneer radio that reads two Bluetooth devices and has
nice quality sound output and voice input for phone chatting if changing cars
is a bit dramatic. About $130.

Cheers

When you get a new computer from Apple, though, it has a specific version of

Due to this limitation, Carbon Copy Cloner recommend that you use the Setup

Once you have migrated your user accounts and applications using Setup

Hi all,

I just purchased a Samsung T3 SSD 1TB with the intentions of using it to move
over to a new MacBookPro soon.

Using TechToolPro version 9.5.3 should I be 'Disk Image Cloning' the
MacBookPro, or 'Volume cloning’?

Or using Carbon Copy Cloner.

I hear what your warning about enough ports and dongles.
I daily need to plug into a VGA projector and play sound using a head phone

I do need the onboard storage so the larger internal drive might be it.

I bought a 2016 15" MB Pro last December.

I decided on the 1TB SSD, because I couldn't justify the cost of the 2TB drive.
I added a 3TB magnetic drive to 'archive' stuff not often used.

I also bought an OWC Thunderbolt 2 dock, with USB, Firewire, and Thunderbolt
ports. This was a mistake, because I overlooked the fact that this was
Thunderbolt 2, not Thunderbolt 3. At the time, I don't think there was a
Thunderbolt 3 dock available. The dock and cables cost me about $500. I guess
there are Thunderbolt 3 docks available now.

Certainly, the 1TB SSD drive boots very quickly, but the peripherals and SSD
upgrades were expensive.

Re dongles - I don't think there are enough ports to connect all the
peripherals you may need with dongles - I regularly use 3-4 usb ports, and an
HDMI port.

then max out internal memory.

If considering going the external memory route, consider if having a drive
hanging off a USB is a show stopper for you. It's not for me, I have 250GB
internal SSD with about half of it in use and my iTunes and Photos libraries
are on the external 2TB drive (totaling ~1.3TB along with some other
miscellaneous data) but it is all, including the external drive data, backed up

Probably some others have some wisdom to share.

Re: Second hand macbook?

Hi Rob
There are non-genuine replacement batteries available for 2008 machines.
I ordered one thru Midland Mac 4 U shop. They work but due to high demands of
new software they only give about 2 hours of run time.
Other than that my 17" starts up and runs quite quickly.
Daniel did upgrade the RAM to 6 GB a while ago, that could be worth
investigating.

"Hi Bill

Just in with client, which is why quick replies (as just wanting for some
software to install and quickly checking email between installs).
After you double click the DMG and then it opens a Finder window. Before you
click anything else, that is where you need to hold down the Option key.
eg. You double click the DMG file. It opens to a “white disk looking icon” on
the desktop. Then before you click whatever icon or installer is there, you
hold down the Control key before you click on it. You’ll then get a pop up
window that you choose “Open” from. the list.
It will ask if you want to approve the Application, and you then choose “open”.
It should then open as normal.

If you want to keep it all the time, and it’s not an installer, but an icon of
the Application itself, you drag it into your Applications folder.
Then go to Applications folder and before doubling clicking it, you then use
the Control key method. Then the same steps to open it.

It should then open after that."

Cheers, David Noel.

PS. On a computer, Chinese characters use the equivalent of two English letters
for one Chinese Character.

Re: Macbook Pro Certificates

2017-05-05 Thread Brian RISBEY
Hi Ronni and Pete

When students and teachers log onto a school wireless network there are two
methods.
First with an id number and password - this gives network access to servers and
internet , second way -students are allowed to by-pass this step and log into a
student network with minimum level of access-just internet, you are presented
with a pop up screen asking you to accept a department security certificate, it
is to do with the Education Department security log in protocol.
So, the pop up screen may be this in place, not anything malicious.
Hope this info helps.

Re: Macbook Pro Certificates

2017-04-29 Thread Brian Risbey
Hi Peter and Ronni

After 25 years or more of using Apple products in a school environment, it is
pretty safe to say that the Department of Ed. is still in denial about even the
existence of non-Windows operating systems and there is very, very little
support for other formats, their Techs barely tolerate or support them at any
level.
Possible solution.
I have been told to completely shut down Apple products, of any type, when
entering a school wireless network zone and then upon restart, connection
issues might sort themselves out. I tend to leave my MacBook on for weeks and
just put it to sleep, this can cause network issues apparently, according to
our ‘tame' apple friendly Tech.
Also, if too many reconnection attempts are made, Apple apparently is very
persistent/notorious according to our ‘tame' apple friendly Tech, the servers
don’t like this, you will be locked out and need your access privileges
re-instated/ reset at a school level.

Hi Brian & Peter,

I agree with Brian that this issue is at the school’s end.
The “Show Certificate” but when James clicked does not show the Certificate,
indicates to me that the Certificate on the School’s Intranet/Internet has been
updated/changed or expired to the certificate on James MacBook Pro that he
accessed with before the holiday period.
I would not suspect it to be a Sierra issue.

I expect the problem will only be corrected by the school’s IT Department.

Are other students experiencing similar issue as James?

Hi Peter

Just as a thought, the Department of Ed is upgrading all school wireless
networks in preparation for online NAPLAN testing, they missed the cutoff and
2017 is going to be paper.
They are adding many more wireless routers. Our school has had issues with
iPads not connecting to the wireless system all Term 1, ongoing. My MacBookPro
has occasional issues too.
So, it could be school’s end with the wireless network.
The Department is also having major issues with access to teacher email
services via Safari and has suggest to use a different application.

Just a bit of ‘insider’ knowledge/ experience.

He has been provided credentials from the school (been in use for a couple of

from El Capitan). He is able to see and connect to the school WIFI network

His recollection of events are upon getting back to school for the first time
after the recent holiday period, opening up his MacBook, a popup presented
saying "Show certificate" which he pressed, no certificate showed and no

On his MacBook, his Security>Firewall setting is OFF.

Hi Peter,

Need to know from James the exact details of what that "Certificate Pop up

Also details about the school's environment network WiFi access.

Re: Wireless band choice

2017-02-08 Thread Brian RISBEY
Hi Neil
That is the extent of my limited understanding, I don't think your modem speed
is an issue here just the wireless transmission aspect.
So, as you said, fixed and close 5 and outside 2.4.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for that feedback.

So might it be better to connect to the 5GHz network for the computers
(fixed location & better speed) and to connect to the 2.4GHz network for
mobile devices - phones and iPads - for better roaming round the
house/garden and also to share bandwidth between the 2 networks - or is the
modem speed/bandwidth the limiting factor there ?

Re: New Macbook Pros?

2016-10-30 Thread Brian Risbey
Hello Ronni, Susan and Rob,
I will be getting one of these MacBookPro 15”. As I mentioned, $6k is expensive
but that has been the same price of the top specced models for the last 20
years when I purchased my last 3 Apple laptops, starting with a PowerBook 5300,
a MacBookPro 15”, then my current 17”. I see that as becoming ‘cheaper’,
factoring in inflation. I get 6 to 8 years out of the machines, which are used
daily at work or at home.
I will wait until the new year, when demand settles and I start back to work. I
think maxing out a machine speed is good idea and it appears that ,in some
initial reports, they may be upgradeable in the SSD storage area but not RAM,
after purchase. A few choice dongles to connect to VGA overhead projectors and
off I go. (Hope they exist!)

Hi Rob, Susan and Brian,

The new MacBook Pros with two Thunderbolt 3 ports on each side, all four of

if you plug in two chargers; it just picks one.)

Thunderbolt 3, which provides throughput up to 40 Gbps, uses the same connector
as USB-C and supports DisplayPort (and thus HDMI and VGA, plus Thunderbolt 2,
via adapters) and USB 3.1 Gen 2, which runs at 10 Gbps and is backward
compatible with older USB devices.
These new machines can drive two 5K displays or four 4K displays.
That’s impressive.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Rob
I did exactly the same sums this morning, $6k+ but then I considered external
SSD hard drives and speed of connection ports and maybe just 1Tb internal drive
might do.
My PowerBook 5300 cost $5k in the early 90s :-)
Over the years all my maxed out MacBooks 15" & 17" have been close to $6k. So,
they are in fact becoming cheaper, relatively speaking. The last, a 17", now 8
years old, is still humming along.
I don't know how upgradable this new one will be. Has ifixit torn one down yet?

Are Apple going to price themselves out of the market?

Do I have to carry around al sorts of cables and 3rd party devices to use my

Any ideas about how to resolve the issue?

Hi Brian,

You could try:
On a backup that contains the deleted network location:
Locate the Network Preference File located at -

1. Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
2. Manually Drag a copy of this file from the above location to the same
location on your Mac /Library/preferences/SystemConfiguration/
replacing the file that is already present.
3. Enter your administrator username and password and then Reboot your Mac.

Network Location erased

2016-10-10 Thread Brian Risbey
Hi All, hope you enjoyed a sunny day,
I mistakenly erased a network location from my system preferences,
I don’t think that TimeMachine is letting me modify the preferences back to
yesterdays backup as Systems Preferences are not able to be modified as they
are required by the system.

Any hints, it is a work setting and not easily fixed.

Re: Full Hard Drive & Mail

2016-07-29 Thread Brian Risbey
Thank you Ronni for checking in,
Telstra and I have had some issues with 'changing account details', which are
now sorted.

I followed your instructions and liberated some space, I am currently creating
an external copy of my Photo library onto a networked drive, that should free
up 360 GB and Music another 200GB.
I am going to use my MacMini as the main home computer and this MacBook Pro 17”
just for work.
September may see it retired, after 8 years of service.

Thank you again,
Brian

Are these Data_Rebuild size 32GB, and Data_Rebuild-1 size 29GB, folders visible
in the User's ~/Library/Mail/V3/ folder?

If so, I would suspect they are failed rebuilds and can be deleted.
1. Quit Mail first (I take it you have a current BACKUP! just in case)
2. Then delete the Data_Rebuild folders
3. Open Mail and check all is ok.

But you do need to clear off some GBs of files from your hard drive, as I also
need to on my MacBook Air which only has 90GB free.

On 21 Jul 2016, at 07:42, Ronni Brown wrote:

Hi Brian,

Are you using Apple Mail version 9.3 El Capitan? If so a couple of things to
check:

1. You have ‘emptied the trash folder’?
Note: Deleting a message in Mail or deleting a folder in the Finder merely puts
the respective item in the Trash but does not actually delete it. You then have
to empty the Trash/Deleted folder.

You can set Mail to auto delete items from the Trash folder by:

Going to preferences in Mail
Click on Accounts at the top
Click on Mailbox Behaviours
Set 'Permanently erase deleted items when - ' to a desired length of time e.g.
One week'
You can do the same for Spam/Junk Mail

2. In your ~/Library/Mail folder
If you see a V2 and a V3 subfolder, the V2 folder is old, stale data left from
a migration. That could be the source of extra wasted space. You can probably
delete V2, though I would STRONGLY recommend you save a backup of it somewhere
to be safe.

3. Note: A common issue people forget is that the Sent messages folder never
throws anything away so far a decent period of time this can actually become
the biggest folder, bigger even than your Inbox.

4. Finally check the following

In Finder from the Go menu select - Go to Folder
Type in - ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads
Then you can use the Finder to delete everything here

The contents of Mail Downloads are all the files attached to emails that have
previously been found and saved. The attachments will still be in the original
emails if the original emails still exist. However over time this folder will
build up a lot of old obsolete stuff.

Kind regards,
Ronni

Full Hard Drive & Mail

2016-07-20 Thread Brian Risbey
Hi All

My 1 TB Solid State Drive is 95% full, time for some pruning…
I am looking at file sizes and noticed that the Mail Folder inside Library is
77.96GB!, I just went through and removed lots of redundant emails, and I
noticed files titled:
Data 65GB
   Data_Rebuild size 32GB
   Data_Rebuild-1 size 29 GB

Does this sound correct?

I am not deleting anything in the Library File, just looking.

It is Music and Picture that are taking up 570GB that I will prune.

Thank you Ronni for the Cloak suggestion, their support page had a lot of
useful information.
If I go ahead, do they allow you to use Paypal or do they want your credit card

Avira Phantom VPN is now available for Apple iOS & Mac!
Protection for people with a mixed-technology portfolio

I’m not familiar with this VPN as it was only released in June 2016.
The VPNs that I do know are 'PIA (privateinternetaccess) VPN’ and Cloak

Public WiFi networks. Are they safe?
Exactly how unsafe are public hotspots?
VERY unsafe!

Airports, hotels… On vacation we also spend the whole day connected to the
Internet. People want to be able to check Facebook, post photos on Instagram,
tweet something they've seen, and answer work emails from wherever they are…
and it’s possible. We mostly do all these things from a smartphone, or perhaps
from tablets or (increasingly less) from laptops.

It is quite common to scan for and connect to public WiFi networks which aren’t
password-protected and let you connect to the Internet cheaply and simply. In
fact, a typical selling-point of many restaurant chains, coffee shops, nowadays
is that they offer free WiFi connections to customers, and in many places there
are public WiFi hotspots provided by local councils.

When I have needed to use Public Wi-Fi Networks (Hotspots) when I’m out and
about I’ve used CLOAK VPN.
The solution is to find a VPN provider with an app that is iOS compatible.
I am very happy with Cloak. They have figured out how to deal with the
limitations of iOS.
Their app can easily set to trust particularly networks, e.g., your home
network, assuming it is protected, & you trust your ISP.
Everything else is untrusted and Cloak will connect with VPN.
<https://www.getcloak.com>

 /Quote:
Cloak secures your Internet traffic without the hassle

Thanks to iPads, iPhones, and ever-lighter MacBooks, we’re doing more work and
play while on the go than ever before.
A caveat of working this way, however, is that most public Wi-Fi networks
(hotspots) are anything but secure, which means they’re prime targets for
would-be hackers, identity thieves, and general do-no-gooders.

If you’re lucky, your company provides you with a virtual private network (VPN)
for securing your Internet activities.
But if you’re like the rest of us, you need to fend for yourself if you want to
hide your login credentials, email, and other sensitive activity from prying
eyes.

That’s where Cloak comes in.

Put simply, Cloak is a VPN that just works. It encrypts all your Internet
traffic so other users on the same network can’t snoop over your shoulder, so
to speak. But Cloak does away with the typical VPN song and dance of digging
into System Preferences and filling in a bunch of cryptic server details and
protocols—not to mention having to shop for and set up your own VPN service in
the first place. With Cloak, you simply sign up for an account at GetCloak.com
and install a little menu-bar utility.

Yes, it does seem to be a problem limited to some ISPs - not just
Westnet/Iinet, since our telstra pre-paid also fails. I tried setting the DNS
to google on one of our machines, but that didn't work either. When I did a
trace route the other day I succeeded in getting to his nameserver.

I'll get back to Michael and let him know that large numbers of people who are
specifically interested in his work can't get to his site because of the
westnet/iinet block. He can take it up with his hosting site.

Re: iPhone data and documents

Season’s greetings Ronni, Pete, Severin and those interested,

I cannot work out where the 35GB of documents and data came from, didn’t show
up in any apps, so
I did a 'complete factory reset' and have started again as I didn’t want
everything re-installed.
I knew most of settings for wireless, Bluetooth Accessories and reloaded the
apps, Music and Books. So, all is well.
Thank you again to those who made suggestions.

Hi Brian,

iCloud documents don’t usually add up to a lot unless you’re a heavy user of
the iWork suite on your iPhone. But when you do, it’s time to make sure these
aren’t occupying a lot of space. You can remove documents individually from
Pages, Numbers etc., from iCloud documents. To do this:

Go to Settings -> iCloud
Tap on Storage & Backup
Now tap on Manage Storage
Next, under Documents & Data, tap on each app
Now tap on Edit from the top-left
Tap on Delete All to remove all documents. Alternatively, tap on the ‘-‘

Hi Pete

Last synced, yesterday and again today.
Documents and Data 35.59 GB
Photo 52 GB
Music 9.8 GB
Videos 1.8GB

128GB iPh9one 6 Plus.

When I look in iTunes I see a green bar named Documents and Data.

A few IOSs ago you could use your phone as a portable HD but I don’t believe I
have done that.

When in iTunes when I look under the Apps tab there is a list of Apps and any
documents that are stored in them, not much there.IOS App scanners and other
apps show that only a small amount of data is on the phone.

Hi Jewels

I didn’t go ahead with CLipWare $$$,
I used Firefox and discovered that I already had a video grabber add-on. Might
have been FlashFGot, and it is signed… Worked a treat. Hope this is helpful.

I've used this for some years now and it's been really useful. Works on
other sites besides YouTube. Occasionally stops working when YouTube change
their streaming details but they are usually pretty quick to issue an
upgrade to fix it.

They also have a chrome version - but I've never used chrome, so can't

I can print to networker photocopier, using all its features, including stapler

Outlook appears happy too, Office 2015 Version 15.15.
Outlook 2011 worked as well before I upgraded.

Re: el capitan 10.10.1

2015-10-28 Thread Brian Risbey
Hi Bill

Both children, El Capitan - Version 10.11.1 & MS Office 2016 - Version 15.15,
are playing nicely together at the moment, latest upgrades all done.

Was some jitteriness (word?) initially as I scrolled up and down in Word 2016,
haven’t noticed it today. Perhaps a little slower to start-up Word app. and
open a document from Finder, if I was being picky.

Menus take some getting used to, different icon groupings and even re-ordering
of commands in pull-down menus.
I notice more keyboard shortcuts available now that were previously only
available to 'the dark side’.

Re: Apple ID log in

2015-10-26 Thread Brian Risbey
Hi All

I took it back to MacWorx Joondalup, and they 'flashed' the correct serial
number.
iCloud all happy again and updates were able to be completed successfully.
Thank you Ronni for your diagnosis and experience.

Brian

Yes Brian,
I had this happen after a new logic board replaced in my 17-inch MacBook Pro.
Normally the technician changes the serial number to match the new logic board,
but some times they 'forget' to :)
Took it back to MacWorx and they 'flashed' the correct serial number.

You'll need to take it to an Apple Technician, or give Daniel a call he might
have the correct tool to do it for you.

My god the fog is thick down here I can hardly see to drive to my next job.
It was clear before 5am when I started work.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: New Macbook

Hi Rob
Do you follow MacRumors.com?

While the 13-inch models moved to Intel's latest Broadwell processors, the
15-inch models continue to use the same Haswell processors from the previous
generation, as Intel has yet to release quad-core Broadwell processors suitable
for the larger model.

That is why it is very similar in specifications!

Hi everyone

I'm a little bit confused/annoyed.

I bought my 15" Macbook pro (2.6 GHz I7 4 core, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD) late in 2012.

Since my 3 year Applecare is running out, and the machine is slowing down, I'm
looking at 'upgrading' to a new laptop.

I went in to Macworx today to see what was available. The top end machine
available was a 15" 3.1GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7, 16Gb RAM and 512GB
'storage'.

Most of the tech specs seem hardly changed - what happened to Moore's Law? The
price doesn't seem to have changed much either - if anything it has gone up.
What is even more disturbing is that the storage has decreased from 1Tb to
512Gb - in the top-end machine! Are they serious???

My current system uses 650Gb - 350 Gb in photos. I can't upgrade without
splitting up photo libraries or deleting old photos. This is 1990s thinking,
and the Apple hardware is forcing me backwards. In almost 30 years of Mac use,
I can't recall storage capacity going down.

What are my options for a portable machine which exceeds to capability of my
current machine? A few years ago I heard that it is possible to install OSX on
non Mac hardware. Is this still an option?

Hoping for some creative solutions...
Rob

Apple ID log in

2015-10-20 Thread Brian Risbey
He all,

I have OS 10.11, running,
I can use my iCloud password on my mobile devices to gain access to iCloud
account and iTunes,
but
I still can’t sign in to iTunes on my MacBookPro, in iTunes or the App Store.
I have deleted and re-installed iTunes a few times, and just tonight
reinstalled the system 10.11 via restart , tone, Command+R, 3 hours later and
no change/ improvement.
I have tried un-authorising the MacBookPro, now it isn’t on the list and iTunes
just hangs when I try to sign in, I need to force quit to get out as menus
just grey out, App Store just hangs too. After all this now change of status.

I can internet search and mail is working perfectly so it isn’t my connection
causing an issue.
Is there a need for a clean system install with expert assistance?

Am I missing something?

Re: Two step verification

2015-10-15 Thread Brian Risbey
Hi All & Ronni,

I have read and been through all this information,
now according to my iPhone 6 OS9:

Cannot set up Two-Factor Authentication
is not available for your apple id at this time.

RE: Apple ID:
I can change password, see list of Devices, but none of them, all current
software updates, have:
This device cannot be used to receive Apple ID verification codes.
I have my Recovery Key but haven’t been asked to enter it anywhere.

Okay, mobile phone number is required, for text message, I entered:
County Code = 61 (correct format, yes?)
Mobile 040…. (Correct format, yes?)

Am I missing something? I still can’t sign in to iTunes or iCloud in system
settings or App Shop when trying to update, on my MacBook Pro OSX 10.11.
programs just hang and require Force Quit.

With two-step verification <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570> turned on for
your Apple ID, you'll always need at least two of the following to sign in:
Your Apple ID password
Access to one of your trusted devices
Your Recovery Key
If you forgot your Apple ID password
Go to iforgot.apple.com <https://iforgot.apple.com/> to reset your password.
You'll need to provide your Recovery Key and be able to receive a temporary
verification code on one of your trusted devices.

Two step verification

Hi All
So
I have upgraded to El Capitan, all good, even Office 2016 is happy.
But, I can't get a trusted computer for my iCloud two-step verification.
I enter password into iTunes and it 'hangs', iCloud too, have to force quit!
Been through the process, changed password, waited 2 days, yippee, still no
change.

My iPhone6plus should be able to receive message with code,Pad can't be a
trusted device, so, is my old MacBookPro 17" too old for all this? My other
computer is MacMini server not running El Capitan so ineligible.

There is any advice in Apple support for El Capitan on this subject just on the
beta issues.

Apple ID is working on iPhones and iPads.
Waiting was fun:
(This email is to notify you that your waiting period has ended and you can now
set up two-step verification for your Apple ID)

Hi Brian,

Two-Factor Authentication in iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan

Have a good read there as it might help you. If all fails you could follow the
instructions under:
How do I regain access to my account if I can’t sign in?

"Account recovery will take a few days—or longer—depending on what account
information you are able to provide. The process is designed to get you back
into your account as quickly as possible while denying access to anyone who
might be pretending to be you."

Changes to two-factor verification for Apple ID

• Two-factor authentication: Apple has beefed up security by adding two-factor
authentication for your Apple ID in El Capitan and iOS 9.

Apple’s current “two-step” system requires users to specify a trusted device or
trusted phone number to which a four-digit code can be sent which you can use
to confirm your identity. Without both the password and verification code you
won’t be able to access your account.

Apple has posted an explanation of its plans for two-factor authentication in
El Capitan and iOS 9, here.
Similar to the existing system, users will set up at least one iOS and OS X
device as “trusted devices.” These devices appear in a list in your Apple ID
account and can be removed from there. They can be found in OS X in iCloud
system preferences, by clicking Account Details, and in iOS 9 in Settings >
iCloud > Account. You also have to verify at least one phone number.

Following set up, whenever you sign in with your Apple ID on a new device or
browser, you will need to also verify your identity by entering your password
plus a six-digit verification code that will be displayed automatically on any
Apple devices you are already signed in to that are running iOS 9 or OS X El
Capitan. If you don’t have one of your trusted Apple devices handy, you can
receive the code on your phone via a text message or via phone call instead.

Tried iCloud and iTunes to re-enter password.
Delete plists and restarted,
Been through Apple support - nothing…
Have I missed something?
