Hi Alan

I understand how to do it but my mirror switch is missing in 9.1.

With 8.3 there is no problem. I am updating the Apple TV software at the moment
although I think the problem is with 9.1.

Hi Ronni

That's all done but no mirroring is shown. It's iOS 9.1 that is the problem.
Has any Wamug member been able to mirror the iPad running 9.1 with Apple TV?

I have been right through the Apple TV settings but I can't see any reason for
the malfunction. I can get videos from iTunes OK.

Re: SBS On Demand

2015-11-10 Thread John Daniels
Hi Susan

I have a new iPad with iOS 9.1 and I cannot mirror it with my Apple TV.

With my old iPad with iOS 8 after selecting Apple TV a box labeled "mirroring"
shows.

With iOS 9 it does not show.

I tried to get some clues from Apple Support without success.

Have you any idea what I can do?

Cheers

Thank you Ronni

This works OK with my old iPad and iOS 8 but with my shiny new iPad with ios9
or with Susan's old pad with ios9 there is no green button and the Apple TV
icon shows connection to speaker only not TV.

Apple Support has a few of this problem listed but I have yet to find a
solution.

Telstra

2015-10-23 Thread John Daniels
I know there have been many discussions about Telstra service over the years
but I'm interested to know if they have improved.
I'm with Westnet ADSL 2 but my speeds vary from 0.5Mb to a max of 2Mb sometimes
being so slow it's frustrating.

Telstra are offering cable connection 30Mb and 25G data signing on for 2years.
Same price within $2 of Westnet.

Can anyone tell me how cable really compares with my ADSL2

Re: Transfer books PDFs to new iPad

2015-06-02 Thread John Daniels
Further to my post, after much experimenting I have managed to transfer the
PDFs to the iMac.

However I cannot yet get them from the iMac to the new iPad either via the
Cloud or USB cable. It seems that if the PDFs were not ex iTunes purchases they
are not included in a backup or Sync.

I wish I had a USB socket in the iPad.

Cheers

You mention 635bgabA called Reader which can convert a page on Safari to a PDFS

Is that Adobe Reader or PDFS Reader or something else? Sounds like a useful

One other thing, when I type the shortened version of application it changes

Reader has been a feature of Safari for several years. I can’t remember when
it first appears , but I think it was around the time of Leopard, but it
could have been even before that. Reader is not a converter to PDF per se. It
is a feature which lets you render the contents of a web page so that you see
just the article content, free of distracting sidebars, advertisements,
popups, etc. You then have the option of export the content to PFD, printing
it, etc. The printed result/PDF has the same clean content as the screen copy.

Until Yosemite, Reader was accessible by clicking a “Reader” button at the
far right of the URL field on “Readable” web pages. If a apage is “Readable”
the button is active. If not, the button is greyed out. In Yosemite, the icon
has moved to the left of the URL field and appears as a pattern of four
horizontal lines. It’s not visible at all if the page is not “Readable”.

Re: Photos on iPhone in iOS8 ?

2014-09-22 Thread John Daniels
Stephen
Just reading the posts on this it seems camera roll is not an album. It is the
pics you have yet sorted into albums grouped by date. It's like having all the
various envelopes full of pics as they used to come back from the chemist all
piled into one drawer.

You can now create albums either of portraits (faces) or in any way you wish,
holidays, work or whatever and drag the pics into their appropriate album.

I still have a quagmire of prints and slides as well as a lot of albums.
Nothing really changes does it.

Photo Library (which is as you describe your iAlbum)

The problem is that numerous photos that were in Camera Roll (if I recall
correctly) do not appear in any of these albums.
However they do appear in various date groups that appear if I select Photos
 at bottom of screen.

The photos I was looking for are some that I took using the iPhone and were
 in the album “Camera Roll”
Some appear in Recently Added and others in the “Quagmire” called Photos !

 Hi John,

Little Snitch is not an evil program like MacKeeper.
But I do still feel the same as my reply below which I sent to WAMUG back on
 9 January 2013.

 Begin forwarded message:

 Subject: Re: Little Snitch

 Hi Tim,

As your question has nothing to do with the Lynn's Subject: just certain
iphone sms restore, I've changed the Subject to Re: Little Snitch.

Little Snitch is not a 'bad' program, a lot of people use and recommend
 Little Snitch... but...
Unless you monitor him vigorously, he can create more problems than he does
 any good!

Little Snitch doesn't stop Incoming Connections only Outgoing Network
Connections. Extract taken from Little Snitch website:
Little Snitch only handles outgoing network connections on all network
interfaces (AirPort, PPP, network cards, etc.).

It intercepts and defers an application’s network access until you decide
to allow or deny the request, or it handles the request automatically based
 on an already defined rule.
Little Snitch does not intercept incoming connections. They can be blocked
with the Built-In firewall of Mac OS X.

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve corrected problems on Mac computers
that have been caused by having Little Snitch installed, I would be a rich
 lady ;-)
Usually my first question to a client who is having Network problems is
“Do you have Little Snitch installed”!

Why do you feel you need Little Snitch?
If you feel you need Little Snitch, my advice to you would be; make sure
you know how to configure and use Little Snitch and 'How To Uninstall'
Little Snitch if you find you need/want to.

 Uninstall Little Snitch:
Open the Little Snitch Installer application and click the Uninstall
 button.
If you don’t have the Installer available on your computer anymore, you can
re-download it from their Download Page.

You still need to check manually delete these files after running the
uninstaller (unless the new uninstaller version has improved greatly and
 now deletes the associated files).

While I believe the list to be complete, if anyone discovers other files I
have missed, please post a follow up with the path to the file.

Note that lines ending with a '/' represent directories that contain one or
more files which are only part of Little Snitch. Note further that the '~'
symbol represents your home directory. Finally, note that the directory
marked with '(*)' contains the Little Snitch registration files, including
a hidden file (.lsd) that will not show up in a Finder window.
Removing this directory will, however, remove all traces of your
 registration from your system.

 /Library/Little Snitch/Little Snitch UIAgent.app/
 /Library/Little Snitch/lsd
 /Library/Logs/LittleSnitchDaemon.log

After removing the above directories, you will need to reboot your machine
in order to boot a new kernel that does not contain the Little Snitch
kernel extension. That is, unless you know how to use the kextunload(8)
command from the command line to do it manually.

In my humble opinion (and I don't have many of those) we elect a committee and

If they have given due consideration to a name change then I think we should

This is just what I do John, and have done for a number of months.

I use Dropbox to sync the 1Password sync file and it works easily and with
 out a problem.

Be aware the iPad version is not as useful as the desktop version.
First, it will not pick up passwords entered on a page and offer to add them
 to 1Password.
Second, to use it, you need to open the 1Password app and then tap on the
website you want to open, your banking for example. Then 1Password uses what
I imagine is it's own browser and opens the site inside that.

Neither of these differences are a problem as such, just as long as you know
the functionality is decreased over the desktop version, and can live with
it. I also have 1Password on the iPhone and it works in the same way as the
iPad. I've never had problems with syncing issues using Dropbox.

 Hi John,

Technically speaking, iCloud does not sync any email from your computer or
other devices, per se. What iCloud does is provide you with a free @me.com
or @mac.com email account in much the same way that any other email provider
 does.

The point, however, is that iCloud doesn't sync your mail in the same way
as it does for contacts and calendars; your mail isn't uploaded from
Mail.app to the iCloud servers and then synced down to your devices. This
would largely be redundant as unlike your own contacts and calendar
appointments, which you create yourself, most of your email came from the
cloud in the first place, so Mail.app on your Mac and the iOS Mail
application simply fetch your mail and sync changes via IMAP in the same way
as they would with any IMAP-based email account.

In fact, the only thing that iCloud provides that is different from any other
IMAP based email provider is that ability to get push notifications on iOS
devices for new e-mail messages; it otherwise works in much the same way as
 any other IMAP account.

If your email provider supports the IMAP protocol for accessing your email,
and you've set your devices up to use IMAP for that email account, changes
you make on one device (like deleting an email, or moving it to a folder)
will show up on all of your other devices.

If you're using the POP protocol to access your email, that's not the case.
Changes made one one device will not show up on other devices.
How I get around this with the one email account I have that is a POP Account
(my Westnet mail account) I have it set to Remove copy from server after
retrieving a message: After one day...
Therefore I can access my POP email on all my devices during the day.
If I was going to be away for more than a day without all my devices (my MBP,
iPad iPhone) I could change the setting to not delete mail from the server
 for a week or whatever.
Of course you have to be careful with this setting if your ISP has a small
limit on how much email you can leave on the server.

At 6.25pm today speed 164KBs
Power off modem for 20 secs, re test showed 290KBs.
15 minutes later it remains the same at 290KBs.

So does the modem get tired, lose interest, or does it appear faulty. It's a

 Hi again John,

When you are doing your Speed Testing.
After picking a test, http://www.speedtest.net/ (this one is ok, I use it
 sometimes for testing purposes)
 follow these steps:

 1. Restart your Mac.

 2. To the extent possible, make sure no other devices on your network are
actively accessing the Internet right now—including backing up files,
checking email, downloading software updates, and so on.

 3. Launch only your Web browser—don’t run any other applications while the
test is running—and make sure your browser has no other windows or tabs open.

 4. Visit the URL for the speed test you chose and run the test—usually a
matter of clicking a single button.
If you have the option to choose a test server location, choose the one
 closest to you.

 5. Make a note of your results, and then repeat with a few other tests and/or
 locations.
Calculate the average download and upload speeds from your several tests.

If the numbers seem reasonable to you, keep things as they are.
If you’re unhappy with the results:
Try unplugging your DSL modem, waiting a minute or two, and plugging it back
in. When it comes back to life, run the test again.
Sometimes a simple restart is all it needs.

Wait for a few hours and try the test again. If you’re testing during peak
hours when lots of other people are using the network heavily, your results
may be slower than usual. With people video streaming etc, evening hours are
 often the slowest.

 4. Click OK.

Re: ADSL2 speed Westnet

2011-06-20 Thread John Daniels

Hi Ronni and RobD

Thank you for your continued interest in this issue. to answer some of the
queries:-

Speed now 5.55pm on iinet mirror down to 164KBs (301KB at 3.25pm)

My neighbour is on wireless and is currently not on line. I don't know if I
share the line with him and I doubt if he would know anyway.
There are no other family members on the network.
No phishing
No malware
No difference in speed with anti virus switched off.
No other program running
Don't have iphone or similar
I'm not on wifi
I monitor with iinet mirror and with ozspeedtest using iinet.
I have updated the router firmware
I have a splitter installed taking the incoming ADSL feed straight to the modem
connection.

I will contact Westnet with the latest speed figures and maybe they will send
the Level 2 tech this time.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the speed drop of at least 50% is
time based since I have checked it for weeks, often every hour all day and
evenings and weekends are the times.

Cheers
John

Yes servers do take a hit, but mainly to the tune of 50-60kb, but this again

AN ADSL CONNECTION WILL MAINTAIN ITS CONNECTION SPEED TO EXCHANGE, give or

Activity from servers after exchange is pending on Bandwidth to Server, then
 its bandwidth coming back.

These are reasons why I was questioning John, and asking for Activity on

Then the most important part where are you monitoring your speed test from?
Same with PING test, try using UWA NTP servers for a consistent measuring
 stick.

 Hi Robin,

Yes and No. John’s problem does appear to be caused by congestion on the
internet at “peak traffic” times and we are trying to get the best possible
results we can for John. Hence all the testing of DNS IP Addresses,
 background activities happening etc. etc.

I don’t agree with your comment that No amount of changing DNS servers
will fix this”. OK, it won’t fix it completely (as we don’t have a lot of
control over Internet congestion), but it can help him achieve better
results than he is at the moment.

Virtually any time an application on your Mac does anything on the
Internet—checking your email, loading a Web page, running Software Update,
using Ping in iTunes, and so on—it must find the IP address of the server it
wants to communicate with. To do this, it uses the domain name service
(DNS): it queries a device called a domain name server, which keeps records
of which domain names (such as tidbits.com) correspond to which numeric
 addresses (such as 184.106.219.205).

If the first DNS server your Mac asks doesn’t know the address, the server
queries another, and so on up a hierarchical chain leading to a small number
of authoritative servers for an entire top-level domain (such as .com).

This system is fairly well known, but many people don’t realize that:
•A seemingly simple activity such as loading a Web page could involve a
handful, or even dozens of DNS lookups.
•DNS lookups take time, and must happen before any data can be
transferred between your computer and the server. So, the more DNS lookups
that must take place, and the longer each one takes, the longer you must
wait for the connection to become active.
•Some DNS servers are much faster than

Hi RobD Ronni

Rob's final suggestion to power off modem and wait 15 seconds produced these
figures:-

Before modem off 163KBs
After modem back on 290KBs

Can anyone explain this? It would be an enormous coincidence if congestion
ceased just then. with only about a minute between tests.

Except one warning if you are an iiNet customer your free bandwidth
(FREEZONE) known as WAIX in WA possibly will not happen, when using other DNS.
One of the largest complaints of customers to iiNet call centres every month.
 WHY have I been throttled.
iiNet utilises dynamic DNS servers, being multiple DNS servers throughout AU,
and the same IP allover. Westnets probably included within.
These then allocate services and Ports to relevant request through regional
 servers.

If iiNet customer visit your toolbox page and crank up your speed to Gamer,
and you will achieve a really fast PING.
But downloads will take longer to come down, as it is impossible to sustain
 such.
Being many timeouts - disconnections, once past initial burst of connection.
Hence, why it is called Gamer an instant response to input of device, but
difficult to sustain except for that ms.
Same as your overall experience for web surfing, VOIP and other services,
become vulnerable, read warnings on page.

John tomorrow when speed fluctuates power off modem count to 15, power back
 on and post results?
Before After possibly : Then 15 Minutes Later, what is speed?

Re: ADSL2 speed Westnet

2011-06-17 Thread John Daniels

Hi RobD

I'm not on wireless no no one is hopping on to my line, but slow speeds occur
when the line is busy. Now, Saturday morning, the speed is down to 50KBs
whereas is should be over 200. There is no doubt in my mind that it is either
a fault on the line or the inability of the exchange to cope with increased
traffic.

I have had my line within the house checked by iinet and by my own telco. I
have a new modem (Billion 7800N) and a central splitter.

Similar problems with Westnet have been reported on Whirlpool so now I'm
waiting for Westnet/iinet to get off their butt and fix it.

Cheers

Then using my mobile phone, I complained again. AAPT trotted out the usual

A while later I was fortunate to find a Telstra tech working on one of those

Uncharacteristically, he was quite friendly and I explained my problem to
him. He said he suspected it could be the joint on my cable in the actual
bollard on which he was working. He said many of the joints on that bollard
were bad because of some dodgy waterproofing compound that Telstra had used
decades ago. He got various details from me and said he would try to do
something one day. Amazing! About two weeks later there was a little note in
my letterbox saying joint found and cleaned, test speeds please.

My speed has been fairly consistent since, come rain, shine, or school-kids.
All the evidence points to thermal expansion and contraction in a bad cable

details so could not thank him for probably breaking a lot of Telstra

Check if your problem in not similar by correlating your speed with air

After all devices have been removed, plug your ADSL broadband modem
directly into the first phone socket into the house, bypassing any ADSL
filters/splitters (just to eliminate these as a possible problem). The
first socket is generally the one in the common area of the house (kitchen
or lounge/front room), but you may have to consider where the line comes
into the house and trace it if necessary – especially if multiple sockets
have been installed. Use the shortest phone cable you have (ie 1-2m), and
try another phone cable if there is no luck with the first. Try various
phone sockets in the house if what you think is the first socket doesn't
work; it's not impossible for a single socket to have a fault, and if the
house has a central filter fitted then some sockets may have no ADSL
 signal at all by design.

Monitor the Internet connection for the difficulty you were experiencing
to see if it clears. If the problem is still there, refer notes below.

Cable modem services can slow down significantly if many people in your

Internet speed ultimately depends on the service provider. Your ISP may
change their network’s configuration, or suffer technical difficulties, that
inadvertently cause your Internet connection to run slow.
ISPs may also intentionally install filters or controls on the network that
 can lower your performance.

I’m not convinced as to why this drop in speed is happening, especially

Re: ADSL2 speed Westnet

2011-06-14 Thread John Daniels
Hi Ronni
Thank you for all that detailed info., I have done some of the things you
suggest and some details are:-
Modem was Netcomm 5 Plus 4 until last Friday and then Billion 7400N. I have
tried both and am currently on the new Billion. There is no difference in speed.

I'm on ppoe with MTU 1492

Line speed at the moment 741Kbps (0.74Mbs), attentuation has been 58, now 60
downstream. Current download speed 93KBs (0.09MB).

I have done an isolation test with different phone sockets, short cable, with
and without filter etc and there is no difference in speed. I have also
installed the latest modem firmware.

My download speeds today were between 167KBs this morning to 3.20pm then at
4.35pm they halved to 86KBs. The speed since then has remained between 88 and
92KBs.

So I believe it is some outside influence causing the problem

A tech from iinet is coming tomorrow morning (Wed) at 8am which is cost free
and I will let you know the outcome.

Cheers

 Hi John,

More details might help you get some advice.
 What Modem?
What sync / attenuation stats is your modem reporting? (Line Speed /
 Attenuation / Noise details)
What MTU setting do you have on your modem router? The MTU setting of your
router will lead to performance issues if set too high or too low.
The normal MTU (Maximum Transmit Unit) value for most Ethernet Networks is
1500 Bytes, or 1492 Bytes for PPPoE connections.

Have you tried an Isolation Test?

 Isolation Test

So, you are on ADSL or ADSL2/2+ and are having some problems, someone has
told you to do an isolation test and you have no idea what that is.

 What is an Isolation test
Basically an Isolation test is when you remove all telephony devices in your
premises from the phone line. These can include ADSL filters, phones, faxes,
answering machines, Foxtel Digital (or any other Digital PayTV), EFTPOS
machines, back-to-base alarm systems, dialup modems, medical alterting
systems etc – basically anything that plugs into the phone line.

After all devices have been removed, plug your ADSL broadband modem directly
into the first phone socket into the house, bypassing any ADSL
filters/splitters (just to eliminate these as a possible problem). The first
socket is generally the one in the common area of the house (kitchen or
lounge/front room), but you may have to consider where the line comes into
the house and trace it if necessary – especially if multiple sockets have
been installed. Use the shortest phone cable you have (ie 1-2m), and try
another phone cable if there is no luck with the first. Try various phone
sockets in the house if what you think is the first socket doesn't work; it's
not impossible for a single socket to have a fault, and if the house has a
central filter fitted then some sockets may have no ADSL signal at all by
 design.

Monitor the Internet connection for the difficulty you were experiencing to
see if it clears. If the problem is still there, refer notes below.

If the difficulty you were experiencing clears, then you can connect one
filter and one telephony device to your phone line, and monitor your internet

What is the purpose for doing an Isolation test
If you are having issues with things like your connection dropping out (modem
losing ADSL sync), noise/static on your phone line, slower speeds than usual,
then this test can help isolate the issue.

All these issues are often caused by some form of interference induced into
line, which could be a result of bad filters, dodgy phone cables,
malfunctioning telephony equipment, or even nearby electrical devices. Ensure
that pest-it and other electronic rodent repellers (like the devices Dick
Smith and others sell) are removed from power points – these often cause
problems with ADSL signals. The same goes for any electrical equipment
capable of generating an electromagnetic field, such as fridges/freezers, air
conditioners, compressors, cordless phones, microwave ovens, flourescent

Re: ADSL2 speed Westnet

2011-06-14 Thread John Daniels
Hi James
No There is no noise on my line but the attenuation is usually around 60.
I am getting about 230KBs this morning (1.84Mbs).
The Westnet contractor has been and finds no fault on my line or at the
exchange and of course my speed is OK.
The drop in speed always occurs when people are home from work or school and
weekends particularly.
Westnet (iinet) are monitoring the line and will send another technician if the
speed drops again.
Thank you for your suggestions and input. I will pass on the final result if
there is one.

A handy run down of the available broadbands

I am on ADSL2 with Westnet and they have a line in Hammersley Exchange which
is about 4km from me in Greenwood.

My speeds go right down to dropout when the kids come out of school and
continue off and on during the evening. On weekends it's the same.

I have spent several 2 to 3 hour sessions with Westnet without a result over
the past month. I was persuaded by their support person to get a new modem as
mine was several years old.

I bought Billion 7800N and Westnet helped set it up today over a period of 2
hours.

Within an hour it stopped connecting to the net. Another hour with Westnet and
they could not get it working. At one stage when setting it up they remotely
operated my Mac.

I have re-connected my old modem and now have download speed of 52KBs (0.45Mbs).

Westnet are reporting a line fault at last.

Long story I know.

 Hi Michael, John, Stephen,

I was trying to follow this thread; Michael originally posted about his
ADSL2+ download speed, then John replied mentioning ADSL2 speeds.
There is a difference between ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+ Broadband.

There is also many reasons why download speeds can vary for different
customers. Location / network setup / Router / wireless signal interference
/ running background applications / faulty network equipment / service
 provider issues.

What’s the difference between ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+ broadband?

 ADSL:

ADSL, or ADSL1 as it’s often called, is the most basic form of broadband
internet brought to your home via an active telephone landline’s copper wire.
Strangely enough, within ADSL1 there are four different speeds you can
purchase, so you need to make sure you’re getting what you pay for. The
maximum speed a basic ADSL connection can run is at 8,192kbps/384kbps. The
four possible ADSL speeds are 256kbps/64kbps, 512kbps/128kbps,
1,500kbps/256kbps and the premium 8,192kbps/384kbps speed.

 ADSL 256kbps/64kbps speed:

ADSL with a download speed of 256kbps (kbps equals ‘kilobytes per second’) is
the most basic form of broadband. As dial-up internet has download speeds of
up to 64kbps, this is a real step up for those who’ve never experienced
broadband before, but when compared with the range of other available speeds
in today’s market, this is still very slow. If you’re into watching YouTube
videos, making Skype calls, or online gaming, it simply won’t be suitable.

*Note: Plan speeds are named after their download speed (the first speed in a
numbered pair like 256kbps/64kbps). The second speed listed is the upload
speed. Uploads are when you add attachments to an email, or put up photos
onto your Facebook account. Everything else you do whilst online uses your
download speed (and download data). Some internet providers charge for both
uploads and downloads, whereas others only charge for downloads, so it’s
worth finding out about each plan’s finer details.

 ADSL 512kbps/128kbps speed:

A 512kbps download speed is of course twice as fast as 256kbps, but it’s
still fairly slow for people who want to utilise modern software programs and
functionality. However, for those who aren’t in a hurry, and who only use the
internet for email, banking and general surfing, this can be a cheap
 alternative.

 ADSL 1,500kbps/256kbps speed:

A 1,500kbps ADSL speed is what most people who can’t yet receive ADSL2+ go
for. This speed of broadband is quick, still cheap, and you can do just about
everything you need to do on the web without having to wait for things to
load up. This will be your first experience of instantaneous access to the
internet, with videos and online TV or podcasts playing as soon as you click
 on their relevant links.

The only instances where a 1,500kbps speed won’t be suitable are when you
have a home network with several computers whose users are all attempting to
watch online videos at the same time, or if your home is so far from the
telephone exchange the speed of your connection diminishes greatly before
 reaching your property.

 ADSL 8,192kbps/384kbps speed:

This is the fastest speed you can get on an ADSL1 connection. Comparable to
ADSL 2 speeds, you will have to pay a premium price, but if ADSL2+ isn’t
currently available in your area and speed is important to you, this will be
your best option. Check out Exetel’s FP-D1 8,192kbps $75.00 plan with 30GB in
the peak time, and 60GB of downloads in the off-peak time, for a start to
 your search.

 ADSL2 speed:

ADSL2 has speeds of up to 12,000kbps, or 12mbps (megabits per second), but
this speed is not common in Australia, as the ADSL2+ market has become the
 dominant speed consumers are demanding.

 ADSL2+ speed:

ADSL2+ is currently the fastest speed you can sign up to in the Australian
 ADSL broadband

 Hi Jon John,

First to John, I can’t remember someone saying to “switch the power off after
 pressing the startup button”?

Are you sure or did it mention:
 1. Shut down
 2. Remove the power cord from the back of the iMac, wait 15 seconds and plug
 it back in.
 3. Startup the iMac

Another fix for the loud fan noise, is to reset the SMC

 Reset SMC (System Power Controller):

 1. Shut down the computer.
 2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
 3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
 4. Release the power button.
 5. Attach the computers power cable.
 6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Re: Your opinions oregarding 1Password

Hi Wamuggers
I find that 1Pasword does not fill in the passwords on sites that require you
to click on a screen qwerty board or similar. Otherwise works fine.

Also sometimes I wonder what would happen if one of the writers of this
software went bad or the program was hacked??.

Has anyone experienced the 1Password application and what is your view on
 this ?

 Regards,

There are two pieces of software out there that I regard as pretty much
mandatory on any Mac that I own: one is 1Password, and the other is Default
Folder (but that's another story). The true magic of 1Password shows itself
when you access a web site that requires authentication. 1Password will
capture your login and password (but only with your permission!) and
automatically create an entry in its database for you. It also puts a very
handy little icon in your browser's toolbar (works with all popular browsers)
that gives you access to many of 1Password's features without launching the
 software at all.

1Password would be valuable enough for its password capture alone, but it
also keeps track of all your software licence keys, credit card numbers,
expiries, etc (with automatic fill-in on web forms), and even private notes.

It is a bit of work to set up 1Password in the first instance with all your
stuff, but it's time well spent. It does base its password directory on, and
works in concert with, the built-in keychain database, so it pretty much
becomes part of the system. The ability to sync with the iPhone or iPad gives
a very handy and effective backup system as well.

1Password is pretty much perfect at what it is designed to do (not much good
 at word processing, though...)

 Hi John,

It is an invisible file that is created by the finder, sort of like the
 thumbs.db on windows.
For some reason it seems you have invisible files being shown on your
 computer.

Do you have TinkerTool installed? If so you can use it to “Hide Invisibles”.
Another option is to download a program like TinkerTool and use the options
in there (there's a checkbox in the Finder pane) to set things
 appropriately.

If not you need to go into Terminal. Don’t panic if you know ‘zilch’ about
 Terminal.
I’ll give you a command you just need to 'copy paste’ into Terminal.

To hide them open up Terminal in Utilities:

 1. Go to Applications Utilities Terminal

 2. Copy and then Paste the following command

 defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles OFF

 3. Press Enter

view in Finder which would emulate this process and allow a bulk zipping

not sure till this evening to check fully.

Windows for all it foibles, does this very elegantly and painlessly in
Picasa (a freebie download) giving the option of compression amount

selected jpg’s) in a conventional way too (as opposed to embedded images).
Not that this helps the Mac users at all.

One thing that seems to work is to make sure that, before you send the
attachment, right click on it (if it displayed as an image in your
composed message) and choose View as Icon from the popup menu, then make
sure that you place the attachment at the very bottom of the message. I'm
still not sure why this should make a difference, but it seems to.

 Hi Severin Peter,

When you right-click on an image choose View as Icon from the
contextual menu, this affects only your view, not the way it appears to
the recipient. Even though a file appears as an icon on your screen, it
may appear inline on the recipient’s screen.

To be certain that a graphic does not appear inline, you must compress the
file before attaching it—Mail, sadly, lacks a built-in compression option.

The easiest way to compress a file (in Windows-friendly Zip format) using
Leopard or Snow Leopard is to select the file in the Finder and choose
 File Compress filename.

In Tiger, select the file in the Finder and choose File Create Archive
 of filename.

Always use Windows-friendly attachments: Sending attachments in “Windows
friendly” format (omits resource forks, if they exist).

To tell Mail to use Windows-friendly encoding for all new messages, choose
 Edit Attachments Send Windows-Friendly Attachments.

Use rich text format for graphics: Although it’s no guarantee of what will
show up on the other end, you’ll improve your odds of having graphics show
up correctly if you use rich text rather than plain text.

Always include file extensions: Extensions at the end of a file’s name.

Place Attachments at the bottom of an email (below your Signature)

To force them to go to the bottom of the message: For a single message,
with that message window open: choose Edit Attachments Insert
 Attachments at End of Message.

For all messages, with no message window open: Choose Edit Attachments
Always Insert Attachments at End of Message.

This does not affect whether an attachment appears as an icon.

I send a lot of images as attachments to Windows Users and have not had
any of the recipients experiencing any problems.

I always use the above recommendations which are

Re: 1Password

2010-12-10 Thread John Daniels
Hi Folks
I have been in email contact again with Agile and here is their 2nd reply
which explains the process a little more. They certainly respond quickly to
emails to the support address:-

The 1PasswordAgent is a background process that kicks off another process
called 1PasswordThumbs. It's 1PasswordThumbs' job to create a miniature
thumbnail picture of the screen as you yourself would see it of any web page
that you have saved as a Login in 1Password, including any backgrounds, images,
etc. This thumbnail capability can be turned off in 1Password's Preferences,
but it's perfectly expected that 1PasswordAgent will get the attention of
Little Snitch. Because the sites it wants to access are the same ones (and just
as varied) as you use in your browser, it's simplest to tell Little Snitch to
always Allow any connections, otherwise you'll be prompted for each one (your
choice of course!).

The web page that you have saved a Login for also may refer to other in-line
images. So for instance, when you go to http://agile.ws/products/1Password the
header image is pulled from
http://aws.cachefly.net/aws/images/1password/home-header-v3-3.png and the
thumbnail process will attempt to load that image also while building the
thumbnail for the agile.ws page.

1Password

2010-12-08 Thread John Daniels

Hi all
I was given a free copy of 1Password and have started using it. It has now
repeatedly asked me (through Little Snitch) to allow connection to
1Thumbs/1Password. It then started to connect me to my bank account.
Am I being hacked or this normal behaviour? Is the security foolproof with
this program?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers
John

Thanks Peter
Maybe I hit the wrong key. Do you regard the security as satisfactory and is
the site 1Thumbs/1Password part of the Agile site?

It is not normal behaviour for iPassword to connect to anything without your
telling it to. It could well ask to be allowed to accept incoming connections
though. This IS normal. Unfortunately, there is not enough detail in your
 post to comment more helpfully.

Are you both using OS X 10.6.5 Firefox 3.6.12 ?

Justin from 'Agile Customer Care' 1Password does not have any problem
working in the above version of OS X Firefox.

Hopefully in Firefox 4 which is in Beta, this recurring problem/bug will

 Hi Justin,

I don't think 1Password has anything to do with Firefox crashing on startup.
There are numerous people using 1Password and Firefox in Snow Leopard
 without any problems.

For sure there is something in your user account and John's that is not
compatible with Firefox. Something that starts when Firefox starts.
A plugin, add-on, extension etc that either needs updating, or deleting.
Starting Firefox in Safe Mode disables all extensions, add-ons, toolbar
customisations etc, but when you Quit Firefox open it normally all these
 settings etc are still there.

 I guess it's a bit like finding 'A needle in a haystack'.
