Nurse Mary
Not to make a "moulage" out of the Nurse Mary case (as opposed to the Sam Becker case), I have always assumed the character was the same for both episodes, because the Mayberry.info website identifies the character in The County Nurse and Three's a Crowd as "Mary Simpson." Also this entry from the Mayberry Wikia page: "Minnie "Mary" Simpson is a Mayberry county nurse who appears in two episodes of The Andy Griffith Show. In her first appearance, she is played by actress Julie Adams, as she and Sheriff Andy Taylor try to talk Rafe Hollister into taking his tetanus shot. Sue Ane Langdon plays Nurse Mary in her second appearance, as she and Andy try to go on a date without the interference of Barney Fife." Food for thought... In the Service of the King, Larry J. Alumni Sightings
Hey, Mayberry friends. It's been a while since I've posted on the digest and let me say, I'm proud to be here. There were a couple of posts about Mayberry sightings so I'd thought I'd throw in my measley 3 cents worth. On December 7 we celebrated Pearl Harbor Day (the Morrison Sisters were really busy) and I watched the movie "Tora! Tora! Tora" on TV about the attack on Pearl Harbor. After viewing the movie awhile I discovered there was a plethora (how would Barney say that?) of actors in this movie that had also played on TAGS so I began to write them down: Edward Andrews, the lecturer Professor Hobart St. John, who was enamored of Aunt Bee because she looked like his late wife. Norm Alden played Tom Strongbow and also one of the opponents in Howard the Bowler. William Schallert (Quiet Sam). Ken Lynch, who played several police officers and captains on TAGS. Leon Ames (not the peanut butter sandwich Leon) who was the school principal in 'The Senior Play'. George Neise, Roger Courtney from 'The Club Men". Harlan Warde, the 'Spoiled Kid's' Dad. He also was in the episode 'Barney Fife, Realtor'. Edmon Ryan, who played one of the fake FBI agents (We Defy the Mafia!). Douglas McCairn was in the episode 'The Cannon', where he and his girlfriend were going to rob the mobile museum from Raleigh. There may have been more (it was a long movie!) Alumni Sighting
Hey, Mayberry friends. I watched an old sci-fi movie this weekend on Netflix, The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) with Michael Rennie. I had seen it before a few years ago, but I had forgotten how many TAGS connections there were in this movie. Francis Bavier happened to be a boarder in the rooming house that the unknown alien was staying in. Also, a very young Olan Soule (John Masters) was a boarder. I didn't recognize him at first but when he spoke there was no question. John Marlowe (Mr. Maxwell, 'Mayberry on Record') was playing the boyfriend of Patricia Neal, who also lived at the boarding house. Most of us know that Patricia Neal starred with Andy Griffith in 'A Face in the Crowd' in 1957. There could have been others I may have missed. If you like science fiction and Mayberry, then you should see this movie.Sorry for such a long post, but when I'm talking about TAGS, I get carried away. Mayberry Folks on 'Superman'.
Hey, Mayberry friends. Tonight while watching 'Superman' on MeTV, I spotted some interesting things. Clark Kent and Lois Lane traveled to a small town to do some investigative reporting, and the town looked strikingly like Mayberry. I'm almost certain I saw All Souls Church and the entrance to the courthouse. I say almost because I may be wrong. Also, Fred Goss (Fred Sherman) and Aunt Nora (Maudie Prickett) played supporting roles. The plot concerned some crooks trying to empty the town so they could capitalize on some type of mineral underground. I didn't catch the title of the episode so maybe one of our trained noticers can help me out. Anyway, it sure looked peculiar to me. One more thing: when we see an actor that appeared on TAGS on a later TV show or movie we call them alumni. Just what do you call that actor that appears in something pre-TAGS? Just being curious. Recently, a new gas station opened here in my hometown with regular at $3.03. Makes you think. Speaking of commercials (on TVLand), I love to see the commercials on the TAGS DVD's from the '60s. Takes you back when the stars did the commercials themselves. Not long ago, a local TV station replaced their daily broadcast of TAGS with the Nate Berkus Show. (Who's Nate Berkus?) Anyway, they brought back TAGS on the weekends. I like to think they did it just for me. Happy New Year to all of our Mayberry citizens! Trained Noticer
Hey, Mayberry friends. Just a couple of things I noticed today while watching TAGS on TVLand. In the episode with Goober's talking dog he had two gas pumps labeled 'Premium'. Shouldn't one have said 'Regular'? In the episode with the counterfeiters, when Andy shot out their tires while they tried to escape, I saw train tracks in the street like a streetcar would have. Is a streetcar or trolley ever mentioned in Mayberry? I thought they were only found in bigger towns. I've seen these episodes a dozen times but these things never stood out before. I'll relinquish my status as a trained noticer and see if I can find some retraining at our local community college. Andy: Weaver's, grocery store, sporting goods store and green ink. TAGS on Lassie
Hey, Mayberry friends. We've started receiving FETV recently, it's a religious channel but they also show old TV classics like Lassie, The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers and others. Well today on Lassie, she was accused of biting a little boy and wound up in court. The defense lawyer was none other than our own Ben Weaver (Will Wright, not the newer one), a good guy this time. The mean old prosecutor was Mr. Somerset (Robert Cornthwaite) from Dogs, Dogs, Dogs. He tried to convict Lassie, but she was acquitted in the end. I thought Mr. Somerset liked dogs. Virgil's Visit
My take on that is this, Andy and Barney went back to the last stop the bus made and started retracing the route back to Mayberry, thus when they came upon Virgil, he sure was walking toward Mayberry not away from Mayberry. Ken's Shady Characters
Hey,Mayberry friends. Well, first let me say that I'm glad we have Barney Fife to 'track 'em down'. My first choice would be the 'Phony FBI Agent'. NO. 2 would have to be Melissa Stevens and her 'Daddy'. And No. 3 would be Mrs. Mendelbrights new boarder. Seems to me, all three were out to take advantage of the good citizens of Mayberry. I'll admit that all the others were out to do the same, but I believe these were the worst. I think I find that all the others did at least have just a bit of 'heart' in their shenanigans. A number of years ago a man stopped at my house and offered to clean up my yard (it was fall with a lot of leaves on the ground and my yard did look bad) for $50. He looked a bit down on his luck, driving an old truck similar to Mr.Wheelers. I was working a lot at the time and didn't have much spare time, so I said OK, but he said he needed the money up front to buy gas for his truck and equipment. I told him I had plenty of gas but I'd give him $10 for his truck and pay him the rest when he finished. Well, you guessed it. I never saw him or my $10 again. I think it was my Mayberry heart that did it because I happen to be one of those people that do trust people, but I didn't let him get a look at my wristwatch with the genuine gold band, you know the kind that pinches your wrist.(And I kept my keys in my pocket!) Andy's Home
Hey, Mayberry friends. All the talk about Andy's old home being demolished brought this to my mind. I posted this before but it's been 3-4 yrs. ago so maybe our newer members may enjoy reading this. We spent a week at NC's Outer Banks on a summer vacation in 2009, and it's a great place to visit. The beautiful waterfront, all the historical sights, and seeing 'The Lost Colony' at the Waterside Theater (one time Andy actually played there), was well worth the trip. While visiting the Old Fort Raleigh and museum, I walked up to some of the caretakers there and casually asked if they knew where Andy lived. They told me 'sure,we'll tell you, but remember that Andy is a very private man'. I rode by his home (it's not visible from the highway), saw his driveway, fence and gate. But not being an 'interloper' I wouldn't dare approach it. Just being close to where he lives was enough for this Mayberry 'nut'. Anyway, it was a great experience. We're planning on being at 'Mayberry Comes to Westminster, SC' in April, Mayberry Night in Troy,NC' in August, and 'Mayberry Days' in Mount Airy, NC (the biggie!) in September. I just can't get enough of this Mayberry stuff! Helen Sighting and Claude Akins
Hey, Mayberry friends. I just watched our favorite teacher, Helen Crump, (Aneta Corsaut), playing a nun on Gunsmoke. Claude Akins played a featured character in this episode from 1967. Mr. Akins was a popular tough guy/heavy from the era. I wonder why he never showed up on TAGS? When my daughter was a child (she turns 41 this week, she'll appreciate me saying that), we gave her a pair of parakeets. She named them Barney and Andy, but we never knew if they were boys or girls. A diet of biscuits and honey kept them from flying very well, too. Cast sightings and Sherlock Holmes
Hey, Mayberry friends. Recently, on The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (on the Suspense Network), I spotted Robert Emhart, AKA Malcolm Tucker and also the Foster Furniture Polish owner, playing a small town business tycoon. His chauffer (and muscle) was our own Goober, George Lindsey. It's hard to picture 'Goob' as a tough guy. Anyway, maybe Mr. Tucker/Foster's businesses on TAGS just didn't prosper and he found his fortune in a smaller town. We all know it's very competitive in a big city like Charlotte. Because 'Alfred Hitchcock' and TAGS were filmed during the same years, you can spot several TAGS alumni on his episodes.(James Best comes to mind also). Also, earlier, on the same network, was a Sherlock Holmes movie titled Sherlock Holmes and the Woman in Green (1945). In a quiet moment in his office apartment, Sherlock picked up his trusty violin and began playing Welcome, Sweet Springtime. (Good 'ol 14-A). I was clutched, almost to tears! Even though I not a 'trained noticer', tidbits like these make a TAGS fan get a little excited. I love it! So, when did Thelma Lou punch Barney in the nose?
That would be the episode A Date for Gomer, when a date was arranged between Gomer and Thelma Lou's cousin, Mary Grace. After Gomer had seemingly bailed on Mary Grace and the other four were on their way to the dance, you hear the sound of a whack from the back seat and then we see Barney holding his nose because Thelma Lou had just socked him. Goober Beasley
By the way I noticed that Andy introduces Goober as Goober Beasley to the tv producer for Sheriff without a gun but later on inthe series Goober gets the name Pyle. Curious, curious. David Oberly David, several years ago I had a close friend ask George Lindsey about that, because I had always wondered about it as well. George told her that sometimes Andy liked to use names of his friends on the show, and evidently he was friends with a Beasley family. Besides Goober Beasley, there was Juanita Beasley, Barney's unseen girl at the diner. And one of the suitors Andy sent the way of Miss Ellie to put her on the scent of other game was Charlie Beasley. Maybe there was another reason, but this was Mr. Lindsey's take on it. In the Service of the King, Larry J. Our Miss Rosemary on The Big Valley
Watched our Miss Rosemary (Amzie Strickland) on the Big Valley today. She played a inmate at a asylum where Victoria Barkley was sent when she witnessed a murder. It must have filmed within a few years of her appearance on TAGS. I knew it was her right away, even though her hair was messed up and she was out of her right mind. In the episode Andy the Matchmaker with Miss Rosemary and the alleged Drug Store Robbery. If I saw that correctly when Andy was talking with the Sheriff on the phone and got off the phone, he said we have to drop the charges of the Drug Store Robbery and hold him for extradition. Yet Barney gets a right up in the paper that he solves the Drug Store Robbery. This seems like it should have been, Barney nabs Criminal wanted other state or something like that. Christmas Show
First of all I wish each of you a Happy New Year. I have enjoyed the postings about Christmas Episodes and the Lack of the Same. I have a Christmas Show that I would have liked to have seen on TAGS. This would be entitled Christmas with the Darling Family Andy and the Family, as well as Barney would be invited to the Darling Cabin to celebrate a mountain Christmas on Christmas Eve. This would include Mountain Traditions of course. Ernest T would be invited to because of the Christmas message of Good Will to all, He would bring a Possum for the Feast. Charlene Would have sung Away in a Manger, and at the stroke of midnight, everyone would gather around the tree and hold hands and sing Silent Night. Aunt Bee would even submit to Briscoe's kiss on the cheek after they found themselves under the mistletoe. Andy would have read the Christmas story from the Bible. The Boys would be excited as a box of fruit was brought out and passed around. They would play a instrumental version of What Child is This, with a decidely Bluegrass twist. Well I've been thinking, (didn't have a bucket) so I had to ask you what was your opinion. John Masters informed Andy that the code was only one occupant to a room in the Mayberry Hotel. Since that is the only hotel in the town of Mayberry, If a couple came to visit, would the man have to stay in one room, and his wife in another room. I mean if she got the one with the bath, and he got the one without. It's still not very good that they would have to spend the night in separate rooms, a married couple.
