 This one's for you Dee!

JUNEAU, Alaska - About 10,000 Juneau residents briefly lost power after
a bald eagle lugging a deer head crashed into transmission lines. You
have to live in Alaska to have this kind of outage scenario, said Gayle
Wood, an Alaska Electric Light Power spokeswoman. This is the story
of the overly ambitious eagle who evidently found a deer head in the
 landfill.

The bird, weighed down by the deer head, apparently failed to clear the
transmission lines, she said. A repair crew found the eagle dead, the
 deer head nearby.

[WISPA] billing program

2007-01-30 Thread Brian Rohrbacher
I am working with a vendor manufacturer who is half way through a 90 day
project to develop some software for WISPs.
This program will include things like billing, authentication,
monitoring, install tracking, service call tracking, ect.

They are also thinking about integrating site survey into it. They
might be able to put together ground cover data if the interest is
there. The goal is to have it all set up so any idiot (call center, $6
an hour phone girl, ect) can use it for service calls, site surveys,
billing...

Anyways, they are looking for input on features. If you could have a
do it all program, what would you want it to do?

Dear WISPA members and friends (which includes many of you),

I just learned some very good news -- Marty Dougherty, CEO and founder
of Roadstar Internet (http://www.roadstarinternet.com/index.php), based
in Loundon County, VA recently joined WISPA as a paid member WISP. This
is great news and here's why:

Marty operates a high profile and large WISP network that connects over
1,000 homes and business primarily in the challenging exurb edges of
the rolling Northern Virginia country side (all forests, fields, and
foothills). Roadstar was the first WISP ever visited by a FCC chairman
when former Chairman Powell toured the NOC and a few customers with a
large entourage and press back around 2002. Since then Marty, like many
of you, has been a frequent face at the FCC and he regularly hosts
dignitaries from here and abroad.

Marty also has another incumbent asset, shall we say, he used to work
in the telco space. So his insight is fantastic. As well, Marty has a
some staff that he is willing to have assist WISPA, such as is newly
hired PR person who is the former editor of the Loudon Business
newspaper.

Folks, Marty is like you in that he boot-strapped this business from
his own pocket and literally from the garage-turned-office from behind
his house. He has repeatedly turned down major investment offers so he
can continue to grow under his control. Also like many of you he began
with 802.11b, then migrated to another brand, and eventually settled (so
far!) on BreezeACCESS VL.

Maybe most importantly, Marty is a great person like so many of you. I
count him as a friend and I am proud to have contributed to earning his
business.

Please welcome him and make use of his many talents...I know we do (he
is typically a top choice for beta testing and other advice).

Thanks Rick and John, in advance, for humoring me as I introduce Marty.

Bingo. Very nice edit Forbes with one exception: the white space does
not refer to 700 MHz. Technically, it covers a range of more than 600
MHz sub 700 MHz, excluding a smattering of bands that will still be in
use (not expected to be present in more than 120 markets) and a few
other small channels reserved for things like public safety.

You've covered much of it.

I'd also like to turn customers on and off.

Know the max speed the customer hit in the last 24 hours, week, month, year.

Know the bits per day, week, month, year.

Top 10 protocols the customer uses (would help to catch virus' etc.).

Keep track of several ip addys per customer (one per radio, ip and lan ip
etc.).

And I'd like to pay per month per customer, and have them always keep it up

These things are suppose to be included. And to add too it, it looks
like the customer will have their own log in too, so they can up the
speed whenever they want. It would be nice.

They could up their speed and pay and I don't even have to think about it.

Adding to that, it sounds like the software might be available to
purchase outright and then you buy licenses per user, or just access the
program through their servers.
Remember nothing is set in stone, but it sounded like the software would
be almost free to use if your gear was from this manufacturer, and every
time you bought a cpe

you'd get a license.

I don't know much about radius but it is suppose to work nice with it.

Now is the time, throw out your crazy ideas everyone...

when former Chairman Powell toured the NOC and a few customers with a
large entourage and press back around 2002.

Sincerely,

Patrick Leary

Well, he didn't say it was a secret but he didn't tell me to tell the
world. He asked me to send a list of suggestions of anything I wanted
in the program and said he had another guy who just sent a half dozen
suggestions in and they were all added into the latest rev. I don't
think it's my place to release the product. I just want suggestions on
what the perfect wisp program would include so we can get it.

[WISPA] high bandwidth service offerings

If I had a customer wanting 5 meg committed, with burst rates up to 15,
assuming I could provide 15 to him via mikrotik / alvarion / etc etc., how
would you price such an offering ? Not like I could call other ISPs and
check out the same thing

What's the going rate per meg for bandwidth these days if you were to buy

RE: [WISPA] high bandwidth service offerings

2007-01-30 Thread Brad Belton
Simple, you price it for what your market will bear. 15Mbps handed off via
a few feet of CAT5 inside a CoLo center is obviously less costly than 15Mbps
several miles from the central business district.

Per MB prices can range from several hundred (or more) dollars a MB to less
than a few bucks a MB.

Call your LEC and cLEC's in the area and get a few quotes for bandwidth at
your customer's address. You will quickly get an idea what their options
are and this will help you put your offer together.

Best,

Brad

2007-01-30 Thread George Rogato

Hi Patrick.
The member list is actually the member wisps operator private list.
Only people allowed is wisps. It does not include manufacturers,
consultants, salespeople etc.

Just wisps.
It's designed for wisps to be able to openly and freely express
themselves without fear they are pissing off a vendor, etc.

I'm sure you understand, it's just another perk to the wisps who wispa
is working for.

Subject: [WISPA] I'm gonna do the honors without permission -- WELCOME
Marty Roadstar!

Sincerely,

Patrick Leary

I include an introductory email along with the invoice to all incoming
members. It gives them options for payment of dues through either credit
card or check. It also gives them the URL of where to signup for the
lists including the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list if they are Principle Members.
Once they signup and I see that they are paid then I approve their
subscription request. I do not automatically subscribe email addresses
for people because many times they use a different address for their
list subscriptions than they do for billing and such. I leave it to
folks to decide how they want to subscribe.

I use a strict policy on [EMAIL PROTECTED] It is only for WISP operators
who are paid Principle Members of WISPA. It is the only list we have
that is dedicated to that membership class only. I do this so our WISP
operator members have one place to talk where they do not feel pressure
to hold back. They can say whatever they want without fear it will be
read by the general public or anyone other than other WISP operators who
are paid members of WISPA. It also allows them to share information
they would not give to non-paying members. I have sent copies of
agreements I have spent thousands of dollars on. These include water
tower location agreements, land leases, grain leg leases, etc. It also
includes copies of my subscriber agreement. I spent a great deal of time
on that document and paid for several hours to our attorney. It is not
perfect but it has saved a few people some time and money out there. I
share my best ideas for how to run my operations and ideas for ways we
can all profit by working together. The [EMAIL PROTECTED] list does not get
very much traffic but it usually yields high quality posts.

I used your tower agreement for one of the water tanks I'm on.
I read through the agreement, made the changes that need to be, and
submitted it went from there.
Basically, your agreement was good enough to use as a basis and avoid
having to deal with a lawyer until I was down to the end.

Then it was my lawyer and their lawyer who did the redlining.

Thanks. saved me a few hundred in legal fees and lots of time having to
spend with a lawyer to get that far.

2007-01-30 Thread David Wilson
Thanks for the welcome George.

I have been speaking to Marlon on the subject and we are trying to
determine if a Colubris solution will benefit WISPA.

Colubris Networks's focus is to manufacturer high quality, intelligent
line of products for the Service Providers that focus on WLAN for
Education, Hospitality, Manufacturing, Transportation and Healthcare.
We would be very interested in how many of you focus on outdoor fixed
broadband VS WLAN VS mesh VS anything the previous didn't cover.

Bottom Line - If we discover that we can benefit this organization then
we help ourselves by participating. We are in the discovery mode and
open to all comments.

Thanks again George.

I am thrilled to be able to join WISPA and hope to be able to help our

turn that around as quick as we can.

Looking forward to meeting you all in person at future WISPA events!

BTW- I guess Patrick does not get a commission or he would know that we
have
passed the 2000 mark- probably 1500 or so VL's and the rest 900Mhz and
then

a few remaining WIFI...

Subject: [WISPA] I'm gonna do the honors without permission -- WELCOME
Marty Roadstar!

Sincerely,

We've participated in ISPCon, WISPCon, and WiNOG that I can think of off the

I think ISPCon is probably the most well rounded. The others are much more

Hi Patrick.
The member list is actually the member wisps operator private list.
Only people allowed is wisps. It does not include manufacturers,
consultants, salespeople etc.

Just wisps.
It's designed for wisps to be able to openly and freely express themselves
without fear they are pissing off a vendor, etc.

I'm sure you understand, it's just another perk to the wisps who wispa is
working for.

[WISPA] Welcome Kelly Shaw of Pure Internet!

2007-01-30 Thread John Scrivner
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce all of you to Kelly
Shaw of Pure Internet in Southern Virginia. Kelly is a new Principle
Member of WISPA. There has been much activity in new memberships in
WISPA lately and I want to thank all of you including Kelly. Here is a
little background on Kelly Shaw and Pure Internet:

I've been in the ISP business since 1995 when I started a small local ISP
called Halifax.Com, which is now owned by a regional CLEC called nTelos.
After working for them for awhile, I decided that I liked working for myself
more (which I am still trying to figure out what ever gave me that idea :-) .

In 2002, I left nTelos to start Pure Internet. Almost immediately, we
started offering Wireless Service with the Nokia Rooftop product. Aside
from the high costs ($700+) of the CPE, these were great little radios. In
fact, I still have two Nokia Rooftop POPs up and operational with very
little maintenance required.

We now serve three rural counties in Southern Virginia with wireless
service. We use Trango, WaveRider and even Tranzeo products. My wireless
backhaul to various POPs exceeds 100+ miles in total. I have several POPs
that are 20+ miles from each other being connected via wireless. In the
gently rolling hills of Virginia, this is no easy task when only using water
towers.

Our state was part of the Tobacco Settlement with the tobacco companies. As
such, our state receives millions of dollars per year from the tobacco
companies. My state, Virginia, has chosen to use part of this money to
build a regional (23 Counties) fiber-optic network that terminates in
mostly-empty Industrial Parks with the promise of Economic Development. In
2002, when we first started Pure Internet, I spoke in front of the Tobacco
Commission hoping to persuade them to spend less money on fiber and more
money on a hybrid approach of fiber, wireless and other technologies.

I am still speaking in front of the Commission about the problems of Last
Mile and how expensive tower space on the big boy's towers can be.

I am also the President of the local Technology Council. I am trying to push
our area as being a resource for technology and a great place to locate a
technology business.

keep the Congressional pressure on the FCC. We just need examples for now.

2007-01-30 Thread KyWiFi LLC
Kelly, please drop me an e-mail sometime. I would enjoy
picking your brain a little bit about the Tobacco Settlement
funds... I have the same exact intentions with our WISP
but government does not want to talk to us wireless guys
so it seems. Just curious if you've found a way inside. ;-)

Subject: [WISPA] Welcome Kelly Shaw of Pure Internet!

[WISPA] WPA2 Radius Auth on Linux with FreeRadius

2007-01-30 Thread John Scrivner
I have a consulting request. I need a small embedded Linux distro
created with FreeRadius built in. It needs to be able to handle WPA2
Radius requests from access points and authenticate based on username
password credentials only. I have made this work in Windows XP running
FreeRadius but I want it to work in Linux. I have experimented with a
free version of this that I found online and that did not work.

The reason why this will not work normally on the Linux distro I was
using has something to do with issues involving disagreements over
licensing. I think it had to do with the particular Linux distro I was
using did not like the OpenSSL license regarding certificates. I could
be wrong as it has been some time but I think that is right. The Linux
distro I was using was Debian. All I know for sure is that the Windows
version of FreeRadius has the basic certificate infrastructure in place
to allow WPA2 authentication for access points and the Linux version
does not.

I need someone to find a way to make this work in Linux because I cannot
and I do not want to buy a Windows XP installation for each of these I
build in the future. Especially since this requires bigger hardware,
hard drive, etc. Not to mention added cost for each installation. I want
to load it on a flash module if possible. No GUI needed. Web admin would
be nice but not needed. SSH interface for management is a minimum
requirement.

Basically the way this needs to be setup is that each server will need a
certificate installed. The APs and the clients will not need a
certificate. The APs will have the shared secret for the radius server.
The radius server will have client data identifying the IP and shared
secret of each AP. Clients will authenticate using username and password
only. (This does require some modification of the default security
settings for a WPA2 connection in a typical Windows client computer. It
will work though I promise. )

The Radius server will need a basic text editor so I can edit the client
and user files as needed. Logs will need to be kept for client access.
DHCP will need to be supported. I will need detailed instruction in how
to setup the certificate for each installation. I understand the logs,
client file and user file syntax so I will not need instruction for that.

I will pay for this to be done but I will need it fairly soon. Contact
me OFFLIST at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you want to try to do this project
and let me know what you will want to be paid for such a project. I have
been using the Deliberant 2350 Access Points to work on this. It is a
standard WPA2 Enterprise setup though so you can use any AP of this type
I think and it should duplicate my setup.

OFFLIST your questions, quotes, etc.
Kindest regards,
Scriv
