It might be better if the whole zope project is handed over to somebody willing to move it forward. The whole Zope project is as open as an open-source project can be. It’s not that Zope isn’t as open source as it can be, it’s that anyone building a new application will not use Zope, which is clearly a problem for longevity since in another 3 years there will be even less people using Zope as more and more legacy applications get rewritten. Personally we are very embedded with Zope 2.11. It’s excellent for what we are using it for and we are incredibly grateful of the community that built that product over the last 10 years. We use Zope in a very simple way for just holding python code, handling roles and connecting out to a Postgres DB but there are other frameworks which would do the same thing in a leaner way now. Still, we are not looking to rewrite because it does what we need well, although the version control is more hassle than it should be. What is the problem here? The problem is how to attract new developers to rebuild a Zope fit for life from 2015+. That would mean making the framework more modern in every sense but still retaining the features that made Zope great in the past like excellent security handling and a quick development cycle. This is not an easy task and would probably involve some rebranding as the Zope name is now associated with an old framework. The decade of the large application servers and frameworks is over. Possibly but Zope could have moved with the times and evolved with the momentum it had 5 years ago instead of being usurped by frameworks like Django and Turbogears which any python dev would choose over Zope in a heartbeat these days if they wanted to build a scalable application. This is what needs to be addressed - or is it your opinion that Zope will die and there’s nothing we can do about it? That seems a shame to me. Plone is going the same way of declining usage and development over the last 3-5 years. Apart from that: the project live from the contributions and contributors. The Zope world is kind of a legacy and it is unlikely at this will change. Keep it alive somehow to the point as you need by taking over responsibility. Do you step up for a particular task? Good response:) No I don’t step up right now, too busy with our own codebase. But we would love to take the project forward in the future when we are a bigger company. You were misunderstanding me, I am not claiming that. That wasn’t very clear, apologies. [Zope] Zope.Org: Not a good example...
I've been looking around for examples of certain objects and such. One simple example is a URL object. Zope.Org *has* this object (Link) and it is fairly nifty, even if it isn't documented (ie, it's usage etc.) but I can't find the *source* for this object anywhere! All I want is to be able to have a Link object on my Zope engine, with possibly a minor change or two, but I can't find out where to get it anyplace. This isn't the only example. I have software that I want to distribute, but I can't get the source for the Software Product/Distribution objects either! I can get the source for DTML Documents, but it doesn't do much good if they make extensive use of objects that I can't get the source for. I would like to enter a plea for *someone* at DC/Zope.Org to fix this situation! This would not be remarkable except that the response times from zope.org seem to usually be 10 seconds or so. I am on a T-1 line and 13 hops and 80ms from the zope.org server. My current tracking shows that zope.org is pretty snappy until the server gets attacked from a bunch of spiders. Because zope.org has a huge quantity of pages (500+MB of (packed) content and climbing), and because objects get loaded into ram as they get accessed, accessing *everything* on the site multiple times causes zope to load things in out a lot, causing it to slow down. IOW, if you have a zope running with, say, 100 mb of content (that's 2048 50 kb pages) on a box with, say 256mb of ram, and you have your caching policy set very liberally, then you should be able to hit 30 requests per second, or 2.5 million hits per day. Zope.org will be on hardware that stretches the notion of "commodity" soon, but it will be sufficient such that all 500mb of our objects can be floating about in ram if need be. Yup... the ZODB does grow with each hit. Not much of course, but some. I am sure for a site such as Zope.org it would not be unmanageable. They most certainly have automated ways of packing the DB. The problem is slightly more complicated than this: We have Apache cache file and image objects. This is a bad thing, because direct requests for files don't ever make it to Zope. Nonetheless, this doesn't affect the /view method. This would be somewhat canonical, except for the fact that because we have cache headers set on the file objects, they are cached downstream, and so many requests for cache objects will never make it to our Apache at all. ~ethan p.s. Re: [Zope] Zope.org Feature Request - Product Download Counter
Yes Apache and caching adds a whole new layer of complexity. But most simple Zope installations dont use it and for quick rough counts it can be useful, of course its rare to be able to replace the log files in terms of accuracy. - Original Message - From: "mindlace" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, October 10, 2000 1:15 PM Subject: Re: [Zope] Zope.org Feature Request - Product Download Counter Andy McKay wrote: Of course the only problem with a hit counter is that high traffic requests mean continually writing the object into the ZODB each time it gets hit / downloaded, whatever. Re: [Zope] Zope.org Hidden Stats
Hi all, under /Software this is shown. The machine is running RedHat 6.1. The Zope installation is a CVS checkout with fairly conservative updating. The content is served completely out of the Zope database. Apache is used as the web server in front of Zope.org, using PCGI to integrate with the Zope server. Soon we will migrate to using FastCGI. Can someone please clarify something for me here. (I've been Zoping for 15 months and *still* don't know the correct answer) If you're running Zope from behind Apache/PCGI then you *have* to run Zope single threaded. Am I correct? Therefore, that implies that Zope org is not using ZServer to serve up documents. Still correct? If this is the case then I'm even more impressed, but would like to ask why not use Ansers 'Apache/ZServer HowTo' and get the best of both worlds?
