I used to DJ overnights on WDBM East Lansing. I major segment o my
audience was guys working the overnight shift at the GM plant. I would
often get calls from those guys complimenting my musical selection-
everything from Kraftwerk and Speedy j to Blonde Redhead and Mudhoney.

Yes, I agree. Just because it is popular doesn't mean it shouldn't be
relevant. People forget that Kraftwerk had top 40 hits. I really adore a lot
of the 'French touch', and French house, I think the overall quality is v
hugh and the French have a wonderful eccentricity in the music. Discovery is
a sublime album! Homework is a classic. This latest just disappointed me,
however.

DP is as 313 as you can get mn!

ok, jokes aside, i always thought Homework was some sort of tribute album to
Detroit, Chicago and New York...i mean, the references were pretty clear to
me, and thats what made it enjoyable.
to be honest, i used to listen to it when it had just come out, and this was
when i was *just* starting to investigate electronic music, and way before
listening to incunabula (which for me was like an epiphany)

Technasia may be techno - but they do hooky songs. There's a concept and

The new DP is very much track after track and sounds like them doing

I think most people would think of them as house, but these things are
fluid.
This one is v, v, v tracky.
I loved Discovery, hype or not, it was a joy to listen to, and I recently
pulled it out again and my love of it was undiminished. I love how they had
that 70s type feel to it. This I am not feeling.

but havent they ALWAYS been pretty techno? i wont even bother to
listen to their new one, or the last one really, but their first
record is one of the great techno LPs ever IMO.

and i guess i can see technasia being kind of hooky, but daft
punk's melodies (at least on homework) are just on like that whole
 other level of goodness.

Tracky as in more tracks than the songs - and downtempo forays - of
Discovery - it could actually be a return to that earlier techno ethos.
One of my colleagues said it sounded like Daft Punk 'jammin'.
They are probably more DJ oriented than listening oriented than Discovery.
They did it in a v short period and it just doesn't work for me, but I am

RE: (313) save me, I think I'm going over to the darkside...

2005-03-23 Thread Gil Yaker
(sorry for the techish review, but)

Agrd that the new Daft Punk is lousy. This album sounds like it's '97/98 and
the Daft Punk guys just bought their synths that acknowledged people wanted
to hear resonant-filter-based sounds - from the first wave of subtractive
analog filters and digitally modeled distortion. The sounds are harsh and
digital. Every listen makes me think they're biting off their countrymen,
M83...

There's a second dimension in that Daft Punk are doing the whole
rock-on-synths bit. Besides the fact that they are late to the scene,
there's no panache in their execution. Unfortunately I'm tainted - Every
time I hear a guitar power chord sound that's pitched up or down only by
changing the playback frequency (i.e. no sophisticated modeling, etc), I
can't help but remember in 1988/89 downloading tracker songs on the Amiga
and listening to demos - these underground tracks were all about the
rock-vibe recreated electronically. Sure they hold a special place in my
memory, but we're 15 years later. If there was some kind of nostalgic angle
to their songs, I might think otherwise.

I could rehash why Discovery and Homework are so great and how high they set
the bar with those albums, but it's just frustrating.

-Gil

NB: The track Robot Rock liberally (i.e. the whole damn hook) samples from
Breakwater's Release the Beast (1980), check out the original it's pretty
cool.

Just got sent the new Moby 10.and it's actually OK!

/ducks/

The LP is utter, utter cobblers, without a doubt some of the worst cash
in chart/stadium techno I've heard for a long time, but the two tracks
on the 10 (admittedly after one very quick listen) sound like quite
reasonable minimal techno tracks with a nod to the 'german' clicky
style.

I suspect that in blind listening conditions many would say: OK track,
maybe on Perlon?

not that I'm trying to justify myself or anything;)

Is it too late for me, or can I still get help?

I know..heard some of the tracks and they are quite weak..still, it's
New Order you know?

Grew up listening to them so it's a 'must have' for me...

They seem to be getting called 'legends' by almost everyone in the
musicbizz nowadays as well as in the musicpress..

Godlike geniusses from manchesta!

Re: (313) save me, I think I'm going over to the darkside...

2005-03-22 Thread Kent Williams
Moby is not without talent. He is a careerist who likes to make
money, and is willing to put out commercial stuff to formula and
frankly I don't blame him. He makes a lot of money, without killing or
cheating anyone, so he's causing a lot less harm than most rich
people.

He will occasionally rise above the level of commercial product as the
mood strikes him. Maybe if we praise him for those rare rise-abover
tracks, instead of always slagging him off as a sell-out, he might do
more of them.

I do have it on good authority that he is kinda smelly in person, if
you want some dirt on him. He showed up at a friend of mine's studio
for a photo shoot, and at the photographer's request swapped shirts
with my friend. My friend was so grossed out , he threw his shirt away
when he got it back.

This is why you read 313 list isn't it?

which tracks are on the 10? I've had a promo of the double CD sitting
around for a while now and have just now opened it and listening to it...
my first impressions? If he didn't already have an established name in the
music business this release would never have gotten him one. Comment on
Love Should - hopefully it should never sound like this song! His slowed
down melancholy take on New Order's Temptation is interesting. Probably
the only song I would return to.
Still, the second CD is all ambient tracks so I'm hoping he maybe put more
effort into that. I'll post my reactions when I get a chance.

I'm one of the biggest JD freaks in the world, from Day One.
(How many geezers do you know who bought FAC 2 - A Factory

As far as I'm concerned, JD was The Greatest Band To Ever Walk
The Face Of The Earth, bar none. No other band comes close, for me.

So, for me, it's pretty hard to listen to New Order (or watch
'em, like on the DVDs) without this bias kicking in. (Especially
when I see Atmosphere on a DVD and later on they play World In
Motion - my God, what utter cack. How could the same 3 people
have played on both of those tracks?!?)

Anyway, erm ... right, the new album. Utter rubbish. You can't
hear Bernard's vocals as noise when the lyrics are so utterly
pedestrian (Ian was a tough act to follow, but nowadays, Barney's
stuff is just plain embarrassing). And the music is mostly
Rock-by-the-numbers, too. There's even a bloody Reggae-sounding
track - and, what's scary, it's one of the better tracks on it.
It's just so ... so lackluster, so dull, so uninteresting musically.
The funny thing is, I was just listening to Adult.'s Anxiety
Always the other day, and a few tracks made me stop and think how
well sonically they do the 80's New Order sound in places ...

In short - this record is an embarrassment, and they should retire.

Completely agreed...there was a time Stateside where they were one of the
few distro/labels that you could consistently find in a variety of
retailers

CD bins. Them and SMILE filled my head early with their releases.

instinct holds a big spot in my heart as a label that *used* to completely
own the electronic music universe from my perspective. so many good
albums and comps..

LOL, all the Moby lovers coming out of the woodwork

Kent's right though, he does occassionally rise above the commercial
cobblers, 'Myopia' from the 'Ambient' LP springs to mind + the mix of
'Move' that's on the first vol of Trance Europe Express is very nice
- pretty deep actually.

The tracks on the Moby 10 are called 'Bed' and 'Mulholland'.

Also, just received Fred Giannelli's new 12 on Dust Science - nice work there

Love Should - hopefully it should never sound like this song! His slowed
down melancholy take on New Order's Temptation is interesting. Probably
the only song I would return to.
Still, the second CD is all ambient tracks so I'm hoping he maybe put more
effort into that. I'll post my reactions when I get a chance.

Just got sent the new Moby 10.and it's actually OK!

/ducks/

The LP is utter, utter cobblers, without a doubt some of the worst cash in
chart/stadium techno I've heard for a long time, but the two tracks on the
10 (admittedly after one very quick listen) sound like quite reasonable
minimal techno tracks with a nod to the 'german' clicky style.

I suspect that in blind listening conditions many would say: OK track,
maybe on Perlon?

not that I'm trying to justify myself or anything;)

Is it too late for me, or can I still get help?

i saw New Order on Moby's Area One tour (way to tie a thread together) a
few years back. They were magnificant! they opened with Atmosphere and
half way through Barny stopped playing and pointed at the sky behind the
audience. We all turned around and there was a giant rainbow in the sky.
Magical!

Oh- and there is an utterly offensive lounge singer version of
Temptation on the new Moby album. Which is tragic, but at least I got to
take this thread around the block... twice.

[Warning: Extreme biases present.]

I'm one of the biggest JD freaks in the world, from Day One.
(How many geezers do you know who bought FAC 2 - A Factory
Sampler when it was brand-new back in 1978? Martin? :) )

You have no idea how hard it is for me to say that - but they should.

And how is the Daft Punk album??? I am sooo disappointed. Loved all their
past stuff.
Sounds like Discovery outtakes, very loopy.
I always thought that Technasia were the techno Daft Punk - and they do
techno better than Daft Punk.
