Cohan's reference to similarities of cultivars reminded me of the article
in the current Rock Garden Quarterly that featured pictures of these
curious plants. I was stunned by them. Their foliage looks more like

Thanks, Jane. You have made me feel better. I have managed to shovel a

I'd also like to thank Bob Nold as well as some others for their

I'd also like to thank Bob for naming his book "Columbines". I refer to
it often. I might know three people who know what an
I have all three types of common violas. My comment did refer to the

there are currently yellow and blue ones out there under the snow. I plant
them every fall and sometimes have pansies. They are beautiful in
Some years ago I established a gardening collection in our local library

That's so interesting, Jane. But on reflection I can see why your climate
would be more like the English climate than it is here. For example, I
never saw pictures of English gardens that didn't feature roses, delphinium
and lavender.
I can't grow any of these successfully. I've failed wi

I have tried two of these and found them to be just as susceptible to

Last summer I was one of four master gardeners who conducted a gardening

was a New Jersey master gardener, and that he had bought property nearby

Thanks for this wonderful discussion on maple syrup. I only know about
this from books. But I wanted to dispel worry about sugar maples with warmer

What a beautiful place! It would be heaven to work with such a lovely
bank. It would be hard for me to suggest specific plants because of the
difference in climates, but my advice would be to start working on placing
plants that you are particularly fond of and see how they work out. Par

I, too, miss the conversations on Alpine L.
I was stunned by the size of the Cyclamen bulbs. I thought my four-inch
