Re: Monthly chat October

Well, not to be something of a wet blanket here, but my first week of October hasnt been a good one. In fact, it has been fairly miserable compared to the last couple of months. The local antiques festival was rained out, and even if it hadnt rained the weather would have been too cold to really enjoy it this year. As a result one of my annual and seasonal activities wasnt possible this year which was sort of a bummer. However, the thing that bums me out most is I have been having some difficulties with the people who manages my apartment. I was apparently reported for not keeping my apartment clean enough so I got written up for that, and they looked for my paperwork allowing me to have my dog. According to them they claim they could not find the paperwork, have no proof I paid my pet deposit, and threatened me with eviction proceedings. Rather than be evicted I ended up giving up my dog which has been an extremely emotional and painful decision. As
a result I havent really felt like doing much the last few days, and have been very bummed out. Of course, the dog I am talking about is not a service animal, not a guide dog, so as a standard household pet I didnt have much legal ground and felt I had little choice in the matter.Still, despite having a pretty crummy week I hope things will get better. Ive started making plans to take my son out for trick or treat later this month assuming his mother will let him go. Trick or treat is still something I can still enjoy at my age, because there are so many fun things to do that night for adults and kids. Even though adults dont really have to I often like to get dressed up in costume and walk around with my son as he goes trick or treating. Along the way we will stop off at one of the public facilities where they are handing out cookies or fresh cups of hot cocoa for both parents and kids. Sometimes it is just fun to go around and admire the decorations
the people have setup for Halloween.Over the years I have encountered a lot of really cool ones. For example, for a few years there were Halloween doorbells that looked like Frankenstein, Dracula, or some other movie monster and when you pressed the button to ring the bell it would give you a prerecorded message about beware because he is coming to get you. Really cool stuff. One year I remember there was this woman dressed up as a witch and she was seated in an old rocking chair outside her house. What was cool is she had this candy dish that looked like a witchs caldron next to her chair. When you reached in side to grab a piece of candy out of it a bony hand would pop up out of the caldron and grab your hand. I love stuff like that.Unfortunately, I have actually encountered so many cool decorations over the years it would take me forever to describe them all. Never-the-less it is one of those things I really enjoy about Halloween time. Everyone bot
h children and adults can have a bit of fun with it, just dress up, and have fun decorating their apartment, their houses, or their yards with creepy and ghoulish things. So I am for one looking forward to it. Especially, after the upsetting week I have had.

Re: Books by Stephen King

Well, as far as Stephen King goes he was once one of my favorite authors, and I have pretty much read everything he has wrote. However, as time has gone on I have found other authors I enjoy more in terms of the horror genre, but I cant remember any instance of anything I absolutely didnt like by King. Of course, as with any author there were books I enjoyed much more than others though.Probably my favorite Stephen King book was It. It was very interesting because it was a shape-shifting creature from outside the universe that preyed on children. Plus I do think there was a good deal of humor mixed in with the horror and gore which offered some comic relief.Another book I really enjoyed was Needful Things. Its basically about this demon that pretends to be an old antiques dealer who sells people what they want in exchange for evil favors. Like a lot of King the book starts off slow, but once it gets going it becomes quite interesting.Salems L
ot is another favorite of mine. It is probably Stephen Kings best work to date, and actually gave me nightmares. Very few books give me nightmares, but that one did. So it gets a 10 out of 10 in my opinion.Under the Dome started off good, but I thought the end of the book sucked. It suffers from what I think is the problem with alot of Kings newer writing in that after becoming clean, giving up the booze and alcohol, Stephen King no longer writes stories that are weird, strange, or particularly scary. Under the Dome reads more as a standard work of fiction, and the only supernatural aspect is the mysterious dome that is keeping everyone inside the town. So when King ends up revealing both the source of the dome and how everyone gets free it is a massive let down.Doctor Sleep was definitely not one of my favorites. While I enjoyed getting some insight what happened to Danny after the Shining I felt seriously let down by the book over all. There were a number
of things about the book I didnt like, and felt could have been done much better.A book I did find interesting nobody else has mentioned is Black House. I liked the idea that it was a dark house where one could travel between dimensions, and found the alternate dimension with the slave children very interesting. If you have not yet read Black House it is an interesting work. More a piece of science fiction than horror.I know most of the comments here have been about Kings more well known works, his full length novels, but I must say I have read and enjoyed all of his short story collections. Nightmares and Dreamscapes was pretty good as well as Different Seasons. Just After Sunset wasnt my favorite collection, but it did have a few short stories that were not too bad. At the moment I dont recall which collection was my favorite since I forget which was which, but I actually find Stephen King is often at his best writing smaller stories than he
is at busting out thousand page novellas.I think the reason I like alot of his short stories better is it doesnt take King pages upon pages to get into the story. It often takes a dozen pages or so to establish the basic story, and it quickly gets spooky or chilling from there. Plus many of his short stories are sequels to his larger novels meaning you often get a bit of extra history that didnt make it into one or more of his major novels, and it fills in some gaps you might have otherwise missed.

Apple say they dont use drivers? Thats the first Ive heard of that. I always just figured they include such a large range of drivers for peripherals that you almost never need to install them yourself, with the closed format of Mac hardware meaning they can easily include the appropriate system drivers anyway. No system can run without some kind of driver.

I know that Android Studio wont be accessible soon, but, fortunately they used first Eclipse as IDE.I started programming for Android and it is not so easy, of course BGT is better to start coding.

@Tom, sorry to hear about your Dog I do appreciate the business. Though Reever is indeed a guide dog, the reason I was 27 before I got her was because I had a Dog called Jess who was with me from when I was 13 and she was four weeks old until she was 12. She lived at my parents while I was at university, but she never stopped being my dog. Its a pain your rent agreement gets in the way. Haloween isnt as much a thing over here as I said earlier, but some of those decorations and activities sound rather fun, although usually in Britain that sort of stuff doesnt happen accept for around Christmas, occasionally during specific town festivals or sometimes at guy forks night, though rarely with that one. i also confess I tend to miss off the festival stuff if Im on my own sinse I just find crowds difficult to navigate and somewhat depressing. Re: Books by Stephen King

@Cinnamon, I found King hard enough to read in braille let alone with a synth! One thing about King is his writing has a distinct rythm and flow especially on the scary bits, and you just dont get that with a synthetic voice even a good one, plus of course there is the sheer time King takes to build up to things which can drag if youve not got a human to listen to. Doctor Sleep was okay, but as I said earlier in this topic, I disliked how Danny sort of became sidelined for Abra, and Abra I just didnt like at all, she felt totally cardboard, indeed the only interesting thing about her was! her powers. The true Knot had the makings of convincing enemies, but I wanted more background on them or at least more hints of what theyd been up to and where they were from. @Tom, Id agree on It being one of Kings best, and that King often does well with short stories, although I have trouble separating out which story belongs where. I par
ticularly enjoyed his story in the death room about the executioner, especially the cheerful man with his electricution machine, and I still think Crouch end is a favourite even if King does make some quite amusing mistakes with English culture, I love how he writes Tenpence! as though it was the old sixpence from the Imperial currency days, when actually we call them ten pence! (two separate words), or more commonly ten p. I wouldve said his cockney slang was a little off, accept that I did really meet a cockney cab driver who used the phrase lovely jovely! Though to be honest what I enjoyed in the story was that sort of twisting of reality which King was so good at in many of his books, just taking something ordinary and exaggerating the angles and descriptions until its extremely creey before the monster even appears. It did this wonderfully, but so have several King novels. Black House again I really
want to read for the Dark Tower links, however I only got a copy of it recently. On the bachman stuff, I enjoyed the running man, though i wanted to read that more because of how much I remember liking the Arnald Shwartzanigger film than anything else, and while the book was naturally very different I still really liked it. I also appreciated The Regulators for how quickly that jumped streight into the story. I remember hearing somewhere that King himself was experimenting under the Bachman name and in some ways it seems his experiments worked better than some of his usual stuff.

Id suggest probably dealing with locations on Slo rather than moving to Kordon sinse generally audio walkthrus are a good thing for newbies and helping out with the newbie type zones is a good idea. maybe do the blue marshes quest for instance, or if your going to do Kordon do the Goblin caves or some other location at the very start of Kordon.

The drivers cover all the hardware Apple has, of course. Sometimes builds of the operating system diverge briefly during the intro of some new hardware while Apple has not yet released an update, but largely it will converge again once a mainstream, generally-available build succeeds it. This means everybody has more drivers than they need, but also that most installations of the OS will run on any Mac. Its still nothing compared to Windows though, and of course Apple does drivers right, i.e. without installers or bloat, so you largely end up with a leaner OS anyway. That is, of course, unless you try to build a Hackintosh. Honestly, why bother? Virtualise; its much easier.

If you could have a realtime version of the game then it certainly should be playable alongside the current version. My current park is on around week 100 and is going fine but I sure as hell wouldnt keep checking in every day on a park every day for 2 years in realtime. An interesting idea though. There only seem to be a small number of events. Food poisoning (seriously nasty! - My business has only ever survived it once) and the fires get kind of repetative after a while. Also, I feel that the legal costs when your employees sue you because of health and safety should be a set figure - as should the cost of fixing the books when the auditors find a problem. Its unfair on the employees themselves if one only gets 20% when you have £50,000 in the bank while others get 20% of £1.5 million. The harsh events also seem rather more severe than the good ones are positive. These arent supposed to be real criticisms though, the game really is wonderfully adictive. I really love setting up specific zones with themed rides and food stalls - along with their own gift shops, of course.

Yes, if you go bankrupt you should just get a game over message where you can read your final stats. There should be a funny sound where all the employees are sadly saying goodbye to one another and an option to view the final message in your in-box or leave the office. You then go to the main menu where you can just start a new game or exit.

I dont have a particularly good relationship with my iPhone, especially because of how poor the battery life is compared to the ancient and venerable phone I had before.Im getting on much better with 6th sense now but it does have a tendency towards sensitivity. There seems to be something you can do which switches you to another ap. 6th Sense pauses but you have to go back to it with Voiceover on. When you start your game up, there still seem to be more zombies than when you left and you get munched. I think this probably has more to do with how bad I am at using touchscreens though, in all fairness.

Im going to stick up for the Braille slate here. I completely agree that it isnt particularly relevant in most western countries but even when I was at school in Worcester, where every class had a dozen Perkins braillers, we had a visitor from a school in Africa where slates were all the children had for writing Braille. Also, we shouldnt forget that they were how Braille was written by hand for decades. They may be an old skill but why do people still learn blacksmithing when we have factories? Why do they still learn flint knapping or how to make dry stone walls? Its because its still a skill. Braille is revolutionary in the levels of accessibility it gave blind people and we shouldnt forget its roots. Maybe this should be voluntary though and not the key part of an 8 week programme.@Dark, Im quite out of touch with the Big Finish stories but I love cybermen and the idea of a story where Jamie and Rob Roy get all physical wi

Most of the rest of them are far more involved with the Culture itself rather than dealing with the war with the idirans from a soldiers perspective. Like his other fiction, the series is really political and inciteful. He was a splendid writer!

The Dark Tower, Talisman, Black House, Dreamcatcher and Under the Dome are some of my favorites.I really enjoyed listening to Frank Mullers readings of The Talisman, Black House and the first four Dark Tower books. It really sucked that he had that motorcycle accident. In my opinion, George Guidals readings of the last two books were shit in comparison. If you dont know, Black House is supposed to be the sequel to the Talisman, so definitely worth reading, though...(SPOILERS SPOILERS)... it kinda sucks what happens to Jack in the end.

Re: mud: the eternal wars

Thoughts:The general atmosphere and people are certainly more welcoming than those found on other space oriented muds. I was able to get up and running within half an hour and had no real questions other than trying to figure out the differences between this and say Miriani. It was somewhat disorienting to not see any sort of map system that would give me directions to well known places on planets or the like, and Im not sure how many credits one is supposed to start out with, but I only had 200, which was quickly fixed but might provide an inconvenience again for someone else in the future. At the very least, it should be possible to borrow credits from somewhere, a banking corporation of some sort? And now for a possible bug: Ive noticed that when salvaging and looking at the cargo hold there are times when debris seems to disappear. Im not sure if this is intentional, but I am more than certain I salvagaed some 13 pieces
only to return with 7. When I checked the cargo, I got an error of some sort that claimed that the admins had been notified and the error would be resolved as soon as possible. I do hope that gets fixed soon.all in all, I can honestly say good job and keep it up.

Also, we sincerely appologize for this, but unfortunately the map command we cannot add since our exit system does not currently allow it, but we will add signs, for instance, at the end of each Malacia corridor which tell you where you get what. Also, the lack of a map command is the reason why our planets are built as they are, even if you get lost you always will find an easy way to return to where you started from.

Re: Some Programming And Android Questions

Its java or nothing, basically. I have a lot of problems with java, but being hard to learn is not one of them. The other option--using JNI via C++--is wildly impractical for a huge number of reasons, and they dont include C++. Getting other languages to run on it is not worth the trouble. You can, but most are conceptually harder than java. Im assuming language power is not a question here-Java is intrinsically less powerful, but anyone who has done BGT can probably pick it up in an afternoon. The harder part is learning the audio libraries-you dont have the ones from BGT, as it were. They will let you do more, but you have to write the more, and thats not so easy.As for development environment, it can be done from Eclipse. You can also set up command line tools, but I dont know how to do this. I know that a friend of mine who recently wrote an ebook reader found Eclipse to be worse th
an the command line tools, so your mileage may vary. Working out the command line tools the first time might take a bit, but Eclipse has a lot of small accessibility bugs, at least in my experience. And theres two things to remember. First, 80% or so of blind people are on iOS. This is because its really that much better, over all. You *can* be on android, but youre going to have to instal alternative apps for most things. If the goal is getting to blind people on phones, doing iOS will let you ultimately get to a lot, lot more. Secondly, phone app development is a whole different ball game. Its not like Windows where you can write a 10-line test case. Youre going to have to write the entire framework of your app first, and then start coding your game. You have no console, for example. Debugging involves copying files to and from the phone. Android is not an environment in which I
39;d like to learn programming, to put it quite simply. And on a side note, Im working on getting Libaudioverse running on it. I dont have the JNI bindings, but Im close to getting the C API to compile.

Re: A really good Dr. who related Youtube series

Well just seen the Caretaker and Kill the moon, so dire and evil spoilage ahoy for those who havent seen those episodes, read on at your own peril lest your viewing be spoiled by the spoilers!. caretaker was actually not as bad as I expected from the He who mones review, while I agree with Stewart, why the hell would the doctor be so bad at fitting in with humans after hes spent the last thousand or so years with them, at least the Doctor existed as more than a commic foil for Clara here, I really disliked all the occasions Clara basically told the doctor off in this episode! it made him look like an idiot. Clara and Danny I really didnt get as a couple at the start sinse their dialogue is so forceably witty and doesnt really seem to have much behind it,and Claras I love him just came out of left field, however Danny did surprise me here. Rather than coming across as a moron I really liked his reaction to the Tardis, Clara
39;s lame excuse and I surprisingly liked the way he stood up to the Doctor and actually characterized how stupid the Doctors hatred of soldiers really was, despite the fact that this was yet more oooh look, the Doctor is really stupid type of characterization. The thing that got rreally up my nose here was the ending. Danny summersaults over the random robots head and distracts it. With the fact the only thing we knew about the robot was that it was a soldier from some war or other and the hole thing about soldiers, I was expecting Sergeant danny to turn around and start shouting parade ground orders at the thing and it obey because it recognized him as a soldier, that wouldve really hit the theme of the episode, and perhaps put this irrational business of the Doctors to rest, but no! The business with Courtney I cant say much about, I likeed the Doctors streight forward interactions with her, very nice and no
t pandering, but it just seemed to go no where really in that story and she just seemed to be there to tick the teenager box, And The hole thing with Clara going off with the Doctor during the day and coming back to Danny? really, this is getting old, micky, Rory, now Danny, what is it with new who and actually having compitant men in the Tardis! especially given this series habbit of basically showing the Doctor as an overgrown schoolboy who needs his teacher with him to keep him in order! Over all Caretaker wasnt quite as dreadful as I thought, and I do surprisingly see a point to Danny Pink now even though Clara is sort of getting on my nurves more. Regarding Kill the moon, to be honest Cx2 I actually didnt mind the moon is an egg plotline, sinse basically it was the only major idea in the episode and was actually given room to breathe. Yes, its a big sf idea, and it wasnt adequately explained but at least the ramifications
were dealt with, problems for earthwith the tides etc, rather than what I expected after that point which was that the things parent species would show up, there would be a huge upping of stakes for no reason, more monsters and running around etc. I therefore give the episode credit on just having one screwy idea, which actually did serve a point, oh and I think the spider germ things actually did! kill people, sound the trumpets!I didnt mind Courtney too much for some of it, I loved the teenaged winjing about being special to which the Doctor responded with well you can be the first woman on the moon! and I loved the bit where she said quite honestly I want to go home I didnt buy her after that point, she was supposed to have been traumatized from just being almost killed yet instantly starts complaining about being board and playing with Tumblr! Honestly, if you locked me in the Tardis console room Board is the la
st thing Id be . I also really didnt like the woman kind makes the decision line, this seemed pretty telling of Mophs thinking in a really nasty way, as did the oooh lets have a democratic vote but then ignore it entirely! if your going to have someone else make the decision, why the hell vote? The turning off of lights across earth was a nice metaphore, but come on! Again, the implications of this one are really rather disturbing if you think about it. That being said I did think the make humanity look up and considder space exploration was a nice social comment, even though it was a bit throwaway and we couldve done more on that one.The thing that really! however annoyed me about Kill the moon, more than Courtney, more than the moon being a creature, more than the h how convenient
instantly another egg to be the moon plot was the end! So the Doctor trusts clara to make the decision, and turns out to be right, and recognized Courtney as a future president, and Clara throws a Hissy fit! For Gods sake! So the semi immortal thousand year old timelord is actually right for once and miss perfect throws a wobler? The 7th doctor manipulated his companion into blowing up an alien

Yes things might have happened in the time war that changed his opinion but it still feels rather too prejudgemental for someone of the Doctors experience. Hes seen humanity at its worst and at its best, he should be better than to fit someone into a neat little box like that.

Some thoughts on she noire

2014-10-08 Thread AudioGames . net Forum — General Game Discussion : Dark via Audiogames-reflector

Some thoughts on she noire

So, on the train back to my flat this evening I decided to start of She noire. I havent finished the game yet, (I have just got to the part with the poison gas), however I thought Id share some thoughts. First, love the atmosphere and charater, very noire indeed! from the sort of harpsicord score to the mysterious life. I know some people cryticise the object hunting but I actually liked it, sinse it gave several portions of the game some quite needed interest and intensity. The one issue I have with the object hunting, is that sometimes the object you used werent referenced in the searching, which made the solutions to several situations a bit strange beware! spoilers of evil spoilage below! For example, the Juke box and strange coin just appeared in your inventory after you talked to the count. Id have preferd if you saw the juke box in the description of the lounge, and found the strange coin while hunting. similarly, where on earth did Sop
hia get that secret password to open the pannel? This keeps happening through the game and is a trifle frustrating, for example when you are in the armory and trying to get into the cabinet containing the experimental weapon, suddenly Sophia has a pass from somehwere! the starting audio track of Sophia introducing herself cut off slightly, so I do wonder if some audio is missing, or maybe Im just not paying attention. I didnt mind the many objects to pick up when searching, sinse the search gave some idea of the investigation and unlike all those bits in the first Inquisitor where you must just put a couple of things together and listen to Eymerich solving the puzzle it did give you an idea of progression. Indeed to me it didnt seem sophia was picking up the objects so much as she was just taking note of them and investigating her environment in more detail like any good detective, however it was a bit frustrating when I went through the cell So
phia supposedly having been captured and having lost all her gear, me wondering how a rag, a clock, some stale bread, a newspaper and the various other things in the cell would be used by her to formulate an escape, yet she seemed to still have her lock picks from somewhere! eh?This makes the plot feel probably more disjointed than intended, and gets in the way of believing Sophia is the sort of super police officer or assassin and high tech cat burgler that your supposed to think she is. Apart from this I am liking the game for its ambience and the mystery elements, and I look forward to seeing what this Opophis business is and how the count and his wifes murder fit into things. Btw, last I checked the Egyptian snake God who was destroyed by Horus was Set. Opophis was the dragon who attempted to swallow the sun during the hours of night and who Rah battled on his way back to earth, and wasnt connected to Set, or at least
that was the idea I got although Im no expert in egyptian myths.

Re: Help: I've broken my Sixth Sense game

Well Sixth sense is a game that requires sensative finger work it is true, though to me that was what made things more interesting. I suspect what your doing to switch out of sixth sense is hitting the very top of the screen where the notification center is and then accidently using the gesture to bring up the notification area, that would switch you out of the game, and likely the extra zombies that turned up while the ap court up with the fact youd lost focus on it are probably why you get mangled when returning. All I can say is stay away from the very very top corners with your gestures and try to be a little more precise, short finger swipes in the various directions are all it needs. I personally love the Iphone touch screen, its a great way of accessing a number of things that would not be doable otherwise, although I do not like using it for things like reading e-mail or accessing the net sinse I find interface wise its a bit cl
unky with those traditionally texty tasks, still for custom made applications or for interface elements that its used to I like the system. If your having trouble with the learning curve you might want to try the look tell voiceover tutorial. This explains Vo and the gestures in a very streight fforward way and has several practice games for you to get the knack of commonly used gestures. Just search for looktell voiceover tutorial in the ap store and youll find it, oh yes, its also free.

Re: Monthly chat October

@Welshweyr, Im afraid I disagree on slates, simply saying its a skill that was used for years is not a reason to continue doing something, likewise the fact that people in AFrica must use slates says to me we should donate more perkins braillers and also bennifits of our more afluent and technological societies to the Africans so that they have the opportunity to try the convenience of them too if they wish, not that we should continue to use slates just because they do.To go back to my fire example, if you were teaching a cookery course, you wouldnt force people to learn to lay an open fire, butcher animal corpses or cut up vegitables with stone knives just because that is what was done previously. Yes, these are skills that are still used in several parts of the world, but thats no reason to throw away your electric or gas cooker. I wouldnt say such things are valueless, only that if a person wants! to learn how things were
done in the past, say for historical research, reenactment or just for pure experience, that should be an optional extra , not an absolute requirement, and for something as important as learning to write convenience and ease of communication should be the imporant values, not some sort of clinging to an old legacy for the sake of it. After all, why was the stainsby, perkins brailler, screen reading software etc developed in first place? Regarding Big finish, the stories with Jamy, the Cybermen and the sixth doctor are the trilogy City of spires, Wreck of the Titan, and Legend of the cybermen. You really have to hear all three stories to get the epic nature of what is going onn. As to the Dalek Empire and Cybermen series, Dalek Empire is great, well maybe the first three series, series 4 went off somewhat sinse it basically was a return to series 1. some people dislike series 3, sinse series 2 ends with a major defeat for the Daleks (well thats h
ardly a spoiler), and a time jump to series 3 of a recovering galaxy about a thousand years later and yet the Daleks invade again, however I personally really liked series 3. The ending to series 3 was also my favourite ending, and not just because it has David Tenant playing a very charismatic genetically modified human in a very philosophical conversation with the supreme dalek! --- -actually Tenant sounds so much like the Tenth doctor there it is sort of scary . Cybermen is an interesting beast, sinse basically its a very different thing to dalek empire. Where Dalek Empire is all about the huge galactic wars of the Daleks and showing events from a very sweeping scale, Cybermen is a more subtle, political story, particularly sinse it is set against the background of the human and android war mentioned in stories like Sword of Orion or Kingdom of Silver, series 1 e
nds on something of a cliff hanger but series 2 finishes the series off in a rather nice way. One reviewer accused Series 2 of finishing on a deus ex, but I personally disagree sinse I really liked the way the conclusion to series 2 fell out, it seemed very appropriate to Kit Pedlers initial idea of the cybermen as logical, rational beings who have removed all emotions and seak only to survive and convert other life forms. My absolute favourite spinoff has to be the I Davros series. This is very awsome if you can get it, telling the life story of the creator of the Daleks on scaro up to the events seen in Genesis of the Daleks, one of the best character studdies bf have ever done and Terry Molloy is fantastic as Davros before and after his major accident. What I love about I Davros is that it really gives you a sense not just of why Davros is the way he is and how the Daleks came to be piece by piece, but also it gives you a look at Kaled society and how slowly over Dav
ros life things decayed through the war of attrition. It also features one of the most hilarious speeches from Davros mother (who is very awsome and has to be heard to be believed): Oh yes DAvros I heard about poor Councillor Matros. Crushed by a tank on maneuvers. He never did appreciate your genius, foolish man, he shouldnt have got in the way! of the tank I mean

Re: A really good Dr. who related Youtube series

Well even if it was the time war, its rather weerd and all too late given that the Moph retconed the time ar because oooh will someone please think of tthee children! (sorry but that plot point really gets up my nose given how much prominance the Time war had in the new series).I also have never seen this tendency before the twelth doctor either, sinse doctors 9-11 encoutnered plenty of soldiers, and only tended to object to the ones who were actually doing bad stuff like Torchwood 1 or the humans and Hath having their clone war in The Doctors daughter. Hell, in Mophats own episode A good man goes to war the main theme as far as I could work it out was that the doctor was supposedly going to war against the headless monks or whoever and inlisting everyone from the series as his army, or something! So, what the hell? Ive got a nasty suspicion that its related to that comment you saw about the young Doctor not wanting to j
oin the army on Galifrey, which is just wrong on so many levels! Indeed if we go meta a for a second here, I wonder if the Moph, or the bbc has some sort of political agenda here, sinse in the last few series weve seen the Doctor go to war, and there was all that stuff about demons runs when a good man goes to war or whatever, work for the British airforce, and now we have a companion whos supposedly been inAfganistan and has killed people, and is making out to have been a social outcast because people dont like soldiers.I bet even the time war will play into this with the recognition that the Doctor in retconing Galifreys destruction actually destroyed the Daleks and insured victory, this combined with the three women over ride democracy message from Kill the moon is politically heading into a very sticky wicket, especially for the Doctor who has always been an absolute libertarian and against tyrrany whether econom
ic, political or religious. Of course I could be reading too much into this and it might just be a bad writer plucking themes out of the air and sticking them together irrispective of whether they fit or not and trying to embue them with a false sort of gravitas in place of actual character development. After all it wouldnt be the first time something gets pulled into New who just because the show runner thought it was a good theme, like russel T Davies the Atheist deciding to suddenly make the Daleks have a religion and start spouting off about blasphemy for no reason, something which really didnt sit well with their usual modus operandi of species hatred, not one of Russels cleverer decisions.

Re: Some Programming And Android Questions

What I dont understand is why people use BGT so much. Sure, BGT is nice for simple audio games, but what about if you want to get a little better and do things like 3D audio, advanced joystick support, very high-level library usage, and so much more? BGT isnt beginner friendly, and the tutorials are not as simple as they seem. PureBASICs language is very simple and very beginner friendly, although the docs can be a pain to read. However, if you read books and learn from the code examples provided in said books or in the docs, it is relatively easy to learn. BGT uses object oriented programming, which, again, is hardly beginner friendly at all. It is also more C++ oriented than anything; the only thing it doesnt have is namespaces, generic programming and templates. And the auto keyword it doesnt ahve s well. BGT is completely crushed when PureBASIC enters the game. PB just completely outclasses, overpowers and outranks BGT in many diferent ways. One o
f these is no OOP. OOP actually can make someones life a hell of a lot harder than easier. Sure, classes are easy, but not using classes is more efficient than using them. Classes just make lives a lot harder because you have to learn things that you shouldnt have to learn, and the C++ reference manuals you find out there are wayy to much to hold on ones head. Thats why other languages like Go, Java, Pascal, PB, and others are used: they are used because they are simpler and easy to hold in ones head to always remember; you can remember parts you need to remember and parts you need to forget. With C++ and all the other languages that are just as complicated as C++, you have to remember the entire reference manual in order to do anything.

Re: is coding in python easy? just interested

You cant. Not in a time period less than 3 or 4 years. This is a project that people have earned doctorates with and its still not done. Grad students work on Pypy all the time, and the only real reason that Pypy works is because its a JIT (otherwise, it would be much too slow to actually be worth the gains). If I need to talk about this more, I will. The project youre looking for is Nuitka. This is actually a trick: it asks Python to implement the functionality, removes the Python main loop, and applies *some* optimizations. Also, I ran it on a real app once. 8 hours later (i.e. the next morning), it still hadnt finished running. I gave up at that point. Nuitka has been undergoing development for 2 years, minimum, and my understanding is that the guy doing it is a compiler expert.Going further than this is not really possible due to the nature of Python
 and languages like it: your code can self-modify at runtime, types arent fixed, class members arent fixed, functions are effectively garbage collected (really), functions can be assigned to other functions (you can replace sys.exit, if youre insane), and theres no actual language spec (problem: how do you be 100% compatible without a standard?). Even getting this far requires masters level computer science or higher; compilers are half programming and half mathematical proof. Some optimization A must be provably correct in something not dissimilar to the mathematical sense; you cannot test it on all inputs. Optimization A is usually not simple, though there are a very few low-hanging fruit like constant folding.I personally do not know of any programmer capable of even starting this project. I cannot name anyone except the biggest names in computer science. Doing this project is a topic of ongoing computer science research;
being able to handle languages of this type efficiently would be a boon beyond belief. But at best, you still have to include an interpreter with your compiler (handling eval is fun), and at worst--say, because you dont know how to implement optimizations and do this as a learning project--its slower than the original language in the first place. But as usual, Im sure everyone is going to say Im wrong and well be beginning another game of disbelieve the Camlorn. To that end, know first that starting with the command line frontend is a mistake of epic proportions: once it compiles something, then worry about it. Argparse is literally the simplest part of the project; if you cant underestand it, stop now and save yourself a huge headache. Should you actually manage to produce a compiler for Python that can compile a significant subset of the language (say, significant enough that I can make an audiogame in it), Il
l maintain your argparse interface for as long as you like. But, if you can make it across the giant gulf of conceptual lava in your way, youll look at argparse as the most trivial thing ever and wont need me. Ill also write everyone I know who is involved with academia, because they will probably want to descend from the heavens and bestow on to you the wonders of a degree in computer science (or at least a great many scholarships).I have been through this phase. It is an interesting phase and youll learn a lot from it. Leave it behind as soon as possible. This phase of learning to program yields no useful code. Take the knowledge of basic computer architecture, what you understand of compilers, etc. Use them for something, anything, else. Theyre worth a lot, but they arent worth a compiler. If its something you truly want to do one day, get into college for computer science as soo
n as possible, make sure its a program with an emphasis on compiler and language design, and stick with it through at least a masters.

Re: Some Programming And Android Questions

You may wish to look at ruby motion. Ruby motion was working on Android support. You cant share all the code, but you can maybe at least share the language. This is not free, but its possibly the least painful approach to iOS development. Im suspicious of anything with the word basic in its name. basic usually means exactly what it says-programming language minus stuff to make it simpler but less expressive. Java is at least as easy as BGT, possibly easier. Just learn java. If nothing else, its a marketable skill and its not that hard. And the rant about object oriented programming. I have to address this, because its wrong. If we call this my opinion, were going against the overwhelming majority, so please keep that in mind.Upwards of 50 years of people getting it wrong and figuring out that we need something better should just be thrown out, to
 o. I mean, pointers are annoying, so lets get rid of memory allocation. Passwords are annoying, so why not kill those too? C++ is not object oriented programming. C++ has problems, sure. But having a hard-to-remember manual? Not really-unlike many languages (say, java), theres a lot of consistency in it (i.e. every container that can support iteration is going to have a .begin and a .end, and every iterator looks and works the same). Also, documentation for it is much, much better.Object oriented programming is exactly three features, nothing more. You may implement this much with macros, but 99% of object oriented programming languages allow you to automatically run code when objects die and, in many cases, you dont even have to worry about when this happens. They also typically offer other stuff that makes life easier--for example, interfaces. Heres a pretty typical thing in C++, other languages like BGT and Java make the syntax much cleaner and the semantics much simpler, but Im not set up to trivially test code in them and I dont know the syntaxes off the top of my head://this class represents tickable things.

If you then implemented a mainLoop function, you could create your ticking game objects and call it, and theyd all automatically just work. In java and most other languages, the distinction between pointer, object, and reference to object is all gone-its even simpler there and, for example, youd not need to unregister. The biggest point here from a practical standpoint is that you dont have to remember to unregister objects anymore-in a language with a GC, you neednt even remember to delete them. For a really good concrete example of why object oriented programming is good, look at Diku: almost every function has at least 10 or so ch- in it. nice way to not have to put all the ch- in. Wrap them in a class and remove all of them, no problem. The other benefits can come later when you understand why you want them. Its pretty clear that you dont see why a bunch of stuff would be useful, and are consequently assuming that that means that they arent. Lack of understanding is not lack of use. If I said that algebra was useless because I didnt understand it and then refused to even study it at all, Id be missing out on a great deal. Having conceptual difficulty with something is not the same as that something being pointless and, in this case, 90% of programmers will disagree with you.But really, since at least 80% of programming languages are object oriented and since at least90% of them support it in some manner, I feel very justified when I say that youre wrong in the objective case. Do you always need or want object oriented programming?
no. But do you want to live without it, especially since 50% or so of problems are trivially cleaner when written using classes? I doubt it. Until you get it, you can just look at it as very helpful syntax for a very common task.Object oriented programming is not C++. I think that everyone agrees that C++ is really bad, in a way. C++ and all the languages like c++ are two very different things-people realized this and most efforts these days end up with

If nothing else, its a marketable skill and its not that hard.Edit: Im putting this here because the rest is kind of off topic. Lets see what I can find that talks about why android is bad. O, I know, how about this: 30 days with Android? Especially see day 18. This is by someone who is very high up in Mozillas
accessibility department and who was involved in getting Firefox on Android. Or this one, by a former Freedom Scientific employee Testing Android Accessibility: I Give Up. And as for things I can do better than you? Reliably turn on accessibility in the first place, select text, use my phone without installing an alternative web browser, home screen, ebook reader, and probably a few other things I dont know about, crash accessibility services by turning them on in the wrong order? And thats not even getting into the bugs that exist in the core accessibility APIs that developers are supposed to use. I do not count install the 15 alternative apps, I do not count but theres workarounds if you do x, y, and z. But thats moot anyway-most blind people are on iOS, end of story. And the rant about object oriented programmin
 g. I have to address this, because its wrong. If we call this my opinion, were going against the overwhelming majority, so please keep that in mind.Upwards of 50 years of people getting it wrong and figuring out that we need something better should just be thrown out, too. Classes: a method for grouping related functionality together in such a way
that we can basically make multiple copies of it. Inheritance: a method for saying that a dog is an animal and can do all the things animals do. Polymorphism: the ability to treat dogs as animals in all places of the code wherein an animal is needed in such a way that the code has no idea its a dog (all animals can move, for example). Re: Making Memory Train in Pure Basic

Hi Orin.Yes you can use pureTts but it only supports sapi which sucks. In the purebasic reference manual there is a section about menus just use menu_create() to create a menu then do all of your sound stuff. But be sure to open a window before you do anything else otherwise you cant have keyboard input. You can also use the input function to do cool stuff like ask a players name and things like that.If you created this in bgt then doing it in pb is really easy.

Get all shop buttons to express their intent (Use Phone, etc). Also, now that I am typing this, I can see that there is no way for you to go into a building or activate the terminal with VO. Oh uh ... let me think on that and talk to Cory and we will try to have something in for the next release. This is the biggest disadvantage to CK right now - you cant really play the game til you can activate the buildings. So -2. Enable entering buildings / accessing data terminals with VO

Re: anyone play lostsouls?

by any chance, did you install the mushreader, output function, and other plugins when you played. it sounds like your playing without any plugins active, so thats why Jaws is not reading incoming text. Im going to assume you havent played any other muds as this seems to be a common thing most people who branch out of Altar tend to find out. Many of the plugins are what enables jaws, NVDA and etc to make the mud readable and playable. Without these, even altar aeon would be reduced to what your doing. hit control+shift+p to open the plugin box and go to add. then find the mushreader plugin, output plugin, and any others you like. Also yeah, there is no way someone would be able to make a soundpack for everything. maybe someone could go make a basic soundpack for the natural stuff like movement, and basic combat, but lets give an example. The breath attacks of some races/mobs. T
here are literally hundreds of combinations of elements a breath attack can come out as. Fire,, ice, electric, chaos fire, chaos lightning, chaos frost, entropic, dispare, burning decintergration (chaos+entropic+fire) and etc. all these many combinations for 1 attack. And breath attacks are not the only special skill that can be heavily changed by your affinities/certain skills. My Elf Lords (err Lady) temporal aura can extend now to do holy/temporal instea dof just temporal. As well, the quess/Phaethon race would have Water/fire;heat affinity respectfully and they would have a modified version of the aura attack. this is sort of the downside of a mud that gets quite descriptive with their combat, the standard prompts to issue damage change from attack to attack and it makes it impossible to set sound triggers up for those attacks without hundreds of triggers for one attack. Howeve,r if you have more questions obout how t
o get started, we can help.

Re: anyone play lostsouls?

If you use mush, you need a plugin to make it work with jaws, then what you can do is route jaws to pc and use the jaws cursor to read while typing in the window. Otherwise, I use vipmud for most games besides alter because Im too lazy to set things up. Its a really tricky game, fortunately the people seem nice, and the wikki is informative. I suggest giving it a go.
