Hi, the answer lies in the history records and it shows the Canaries
belonged to Potugal. The Spanish took over the Azores islands and
controlled for s little over 60 years when England mediated the deal where
Potugal was to keep the Azores and Madeira and give up the Canarie's.
Regarding Puerto

Yes, I had a Vietnamese Phuc. On the seating chart I wrote Fook so no
substitute would embarrass him. And I've had plenty where I felt bad for

Linda,
Thanks for the context of the conversation. I do know that when I was doing my
research, I found names on Pico that I did not think would be "traditionally"
Portuguese. Joanna, Barbara and Eugenia come to mind. The last one caused a

I've apparently missed the beginning of this conversation, so I'm curious as to

Thank you for the clarification, but as teachers you and I have probably seen

Hi Gayle,
Cheri answered your question, but for context: I mentioned "Gertrudes"
because in the records I've looked at, it seemed to be an extremely popular
name for girls in the late 19th century-- something I would never have
guessed. The article Cheri linked to stated that "As far as
Huh, well here's an interesting paradox: "Linda" is on the approved list,
but I have only come across it in all the records I've reviewed one time;
it was given to an exposta who died at birth. "Rosa", my sister's name and
given in honor of her grandmother, her great-great grandmother,

Hi Paul, I have some really early Andrade Silva’s 1747 in Santa Maria. I found
it interesting when you posted because Andrade Silva is unusual. Silva is not
a Santa Maria name usually. I can share them with you if you think it might
be a clue.

My apologies Cheri if my post offended you or anyone else, that was not my
intent. Francisco is/was the missing sibling of my grandmother Gloria. I
would research him get frustrated, then move onto another person or branch.
After taking a long break I would start the process all over again. I

Eugenia! don't think I've seen that one. I have seen "Aida." Those wacky

Nowadays you see such names that normally weren't allowed to be given to a
portuguese baby unless one of the parents was foreign and the name was
legal in that country. A friend of mine and her husband are both portuguese
and last year they named their baby Yasmin.
But still, the top 5 names
Manuel is on the list. Go to bed and look tomorrow.

Hi all,
I thought I would try and revive this topic of Puerto Rican matches to
Azorean ancestry on FTDNA Family Finder. My Uncle's DNA recently came back
and I have been trying to sift through his matches. His maternal side is
from Madeira, but his Paternal side is from the Azores.
