Subject: [Bes-admins] Adding an administrator to BAS

Hi all,

I'm really tired and irritable at the moment but there's no excuse for
forgetting how to do this. Unfortunately, I have to ask.

A new member of our helpdesk want permissions on our Blackberry Administration
Service so she can activate / manage our devices. She
will authenticate directly with our Active Directory. How on earth do I add
her? I've entered the following information under
Administrator user > Create an administrator user:

Display name: jhaWhatever (the jha means I can identify the role she holds)

Authentication type: Active Directory

Domain: Our netbios domain name

Administrator password: This is where I'm going wrong. What password is it
asking for? It's clearly not the user's password, and
neither is it the local BAS password or BES Service Account password.

Someone please help before my head explodes L

Richard

Subject: [Bes-admins] FW: BlackBerry Agent Issues

We are using BES 5 with 5 different MS Exchange 2003 mail servers (one for each
of our locations). Four of the locations/servers
are doing fine. The connection to the 5th server has suddenly posed an issue
the last day or two. The agent for that server (now
agents since we've created some additional static agents) will periodically get
restarted by the BlackBerry controller. The message
in the Windows Event Viewer of the BlackBerry server is:

agent 5 missed 2 heartbeats. Restarting.

When I look at that agent's log it shows this before restarting each time.

[5] (04/20 13:02:50.003):{0x2A6C} Controller: Requested to stop
[50106] (04/20 13:02:50.295):{0x1D74} Stopping BlackBerry Mailbox Agent 5 for
Server vTolBlackberry

Any ideas? I spoke to RIM and will be calling them back, but they didn't sound
overly sure the first time I mentioned the issue.
Yesterday this occurred ten times and I had to restart the controller and/or
dispatcher service for the agent to work again. We
have rebooted the Exchange server in question and BlackBerry server.

Our SQL admin thinks my BES database is overloading our SQL server, apparently
at least in terms of I/O. To take the strain off, he
wants to move the besmgmt database to a different server. What is the best way
to do this? I have two BES servers (5.0.3) in HA. The
SQL box is SQL 2005, I believe SP3 but not certain. I have approximately 200
Blackberry users. Personally, I didn't think the BES
database was that intense for a SQL server but my server keeps losing

things that used other SQL databases on that box stopped working until I
rebooted it. RDP didn't work until I rebooted it a second

I'll bet $1.00 that the only reason they want to move it is to silence you.

Tell them to do their due diligence and look at the performance of the server

Thanks. I saw even the KB article for 5.0.3 Exchange on the DBNS said the SQL
server had to be on server 2003, but another article
says it's now supported on 2008 as of SP1. I assume the original article was
just never updated?

I'm a bit torn on the database. I really don't like the thought of moving it,
but then if they don't figure it out soon, it's really
going to annoy me. My BES servers are losing connection to the database much
more than I'm comfortable with.

I'm actually wondering if part of why they want to move me is that BES is the
only thing actively complaining.

even tried to put a password on it and lock it, still
noting. All you get is the message that says the screen is locked and press the
lock button to unlock it. Does anyone know of a fix

I think it may be all or nothing. We use an auto-config file and figure that
the same conditions should apply to a user going through the proxy regardless

switching to the internet browser so they could bypass the proxy.

Already did and installed everything but couldn't send emails to other domains
and couldn't sync contacts. Everything else was
working fine. Their Lotus Admin was onsite and couldn't find the problem which
was definately on Lotus Domino replica which was on
BB Server. Error was that due to policy rules he can not send outbound emails
while everything was set as it should be so obviously
some error was made during replica installation.

Delete the besmgmt database

Run the created statement again (leaving besmgmt.cfg as the default … or change
the database name if yours is not BESMgmt … don’t change anything else in there)

Restore your database on top of the newly created one with created

Restart dispatcher service.

Or … the transaction log is full … is it?

Please don’t email me directly but rather the list so everyone can see the

Hello , we did everything by the book. As far as instructions goes, changing
the database to new sql server, but the only service that would not start up is
the BB dispatcher,

and the new sql server name did not change in the blackberry manager. Our
exchange server is hosted in Canada and we use mapi services to sync email, not
sure is this has

anything to do with it but figured I would let you know.

We received this eror The BlackBerry Dispatcher service terminated with
service-specific error 5608. We did the following resolution but did not fix
the error, wondering if any one has any other possible solutions.

Environment

*   BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0 and 4.1

Problem

When trying to start the BlackBerry Dispatcher, after moving the BlackBerry
Configuration Database to a remote Microsoft® SQL Server™, you receive error
code 5608.

Cause

This issue may be caused by one of the following:

1. The Microsoft SQL Server does not have the error codes in the master
table database for the BlackBerry Dispatcher service to start.
2. The BlackBerry Configuration Database transaction logs are full.

Resolution

Complete the appropriate resolution.

Cause 1

The Microsoft SQL Server does not have the error codes in the master table
database for the BlackBerry Dispatcher service to start .

Resolution

1. Extract the service pack for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software
version that you are using to a folder location.
2. Copy the Database folder from the extracted folder location to the
remote Microsoft SQL Server.
3. Open the BESMgmt.cfg file in a text editing application (e.g. Microsoft
Notepad).
4. Type cmd=Migrate.
5. Make sure the Microsoft SQL Server and BlackBerry Configuration
Database names are correct.
6. Save and close the BESMgmt.cfg file.
7. Open a command prompt and navigate to the database folder.
8. From the command prompt, type createdb besmgmt.cfg.
9. Confirm the account with which you are logged into the Microsoft SQL
Server has access to the BlackBerry Configuration Database.
10. Start the BlackBerry Dispatcher service.

Cause 2

The BlackBerry Configuration Database transaction logs are full.

Resolution

Back up the transaction logs on the database server for the BlackBerry
Configuration Database.

Does anyone know if there is a way to find out if a device or a user's account
has been provisioned to connect to a BES server?
Quite often we have users who will go out and buy a BB, the sales kid will
automatically add them to the BIS plan. Then they'll come
to us and try to connect to our BES, once it fails then that requires us to get
the user to switch to an enterprise plan. I know
occasionally even with a BIS plan, you'll see the enterprise activation icons
around so it can get the Help Desk a little confused
whether or not it's ready. Wondering if there is a service book or a cmd that
can be ran which will go through a checklist to see if
it's ready to hookup to a BES.

In reply to " Moving BES 5 server to new hardware (steveaschett...@yahoo.com)"

RIM has a user migration tool. As long as you are using the same platform that
would allow you to move the users from one BES server
to the other. It seemed simple to use and it might do the trick if you are
moving to the same mail environment. We were moving from
Exchange to Domino and the data formats do not match so it would not work for
us. But as I said, the same format should be fine.

Our BES 5 server is on some old, out-of-warranty hardware and I just got a

Question: What's the best way to go about doing a server move?

BES is currently running on a 2003 Server, running 5.0. Ideally, I would move
it to a 2008 R2 server with much more RAM etc etc...

If you already have another SRP don't spend the effort on getting a migration
key. The only reason you get it is so you can have 2
servers stood up at the same time.

90 days is all that they will give you ... but you already have a 2nd SRP so
there is no need to do this.

Thanks Chris - I already have another SRP-ID that I was planning on using
during my migration. But I order a "migration kit" -
I just had two BES packages around (Verizon & Novell), but I only used one so
far.

But Is 90 days all they will give you?

>>> Chris Burwell  06/19/10 1:08 PM >>>
The migration kit is just another SRP-ID (Since you cannot have two
servers connected to the Blackberry network with the same SRP-ID).

In my case, RIM issued me a new SRP-ID and said that in 90 days the
SRP-ID that my current/old BES was using would become inactivte.

The migration kit is generally used to make transitioning to a new BES
server easier.

Yes to what?

What AD attribute are you looking to view? Regardless, there is no way to
simply get a "logon id" if you're looking for everything
prior to @domain.com you could export the user data and parse it in excel / etc.

I reviewed the logs to verify the wipe | kill happened, this is all that I can
locate on the search...I looked at the rest of the log and cant seem to locate
a verification that the wipe actually happened. Am I missing something?

Re: [Bes-admins] Implementing New Password Policy Tomorrow for 1300 users

2010-06-28 Thread hdawg
I would not recommend following the path you're taking.

First and foremost I don't ever recommend applying the default policy to
anyone. I recommend making the default policy the most
secure / most restrictive policy and then creating new policies for however you
choose to implement IT Policy.

By doing this you've gone through and explicitly set what you want and don't
have any possible stragglers . you know if someone has
the Default policy assigned to them that someone didn't do what they were
supposed to.

So, create the new policy and assign them to people. I'd do them in groups of
100 in 30 minute intervals . doing the first 10 or so
prior to the group of 100 one at a time to verify that the proper settings are
indeed in place.

Hopefully you've done some testing already and already worked out the kinks
with a pilot group, but if not, now you can.

Hi Everyone,

Can anyone make a good recommendation on the most efficient way to push down a
new password policy to everyone tomorrow. I assume
changing the default policy is the preferred method, and then having an
exception group should that be needed. Once I update the
default policy does it automatically get pushed or do I need to highlight the
users names and click resent IT policy.

Just want to do this is the best possible fashion to minimize problems.

Re: [Bes-admins] ImplementingNew PasswordPolicyTomorrowfor1300 users

2010-06-28 Thread hdawg
Not likely, not should, not maybe ... IT WILL BE AUTOMATIC. Sorry for the
caps, just wanted to clear any doubt. If it doesn't
automatically push, there is problem somewhere in the delivery path..

That said ... this is another good reason to use a separate policy. As soon as
you update this policy you'll be queueing the push
for everyone; if you create a separate policy and assign it to people you can
control the deployment. Sure BES 5 has throttling
yadda yadda, but you're still not in complete control.

You could use the trait tool
(http://docs.blackberry.com/en/admin/deliverables/12059/BlackBerry_Policy_Service_Throttling_EN.pdf)
 to
help out with this ... but I still think you're better off with a new policy
name

Keep an eye on the POLC log files when you do this and the Policy service
executable for memory utilization. Also watch the ALRT
log for any errors and the CTRL log to see if the BlackBerry Controller service
has to kick the Policy service due to it being hung.

Re: [Bes-admins] How often do you restart your BES

2010-07-02 Thread hdawg
Seriously folks ... let's get back on topic.

How often do you restart your BES? Only when patches are required or there is
some big error / problem. If you have planned
reboots of your BES because of problems start to drum up then you have a
systematic / architecture flaw that needs to be addressed.
BES isn't an application that needs reboots to "clear it up".

And to hopefully end the discussion on "how many users do you put on a BES on
ESX?" I've had 4000 users on a single BES.

You can pretty much put any app on ESX ... the reason vendors don't want to
support applications on virtual servers is because
server admins / engineers / architects don't properly spec the resources
required for the application. Baselining and benchmarking
a server for 8 hours one day just doesn't cut it. Lucky for BES it isn't too
taxing on Disk I/O which is without a doubt the single
most improperly spec'd resource for a virtual environment.

I'd also stay away from multiple nics; just isn't needed.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming; Happy Friday.

...yesterday afternoon.

All works well, except that once people have pulled battery for the first time
they lose most of their contacts. I did a wipe /
re-activation for 2 people that fixed the issue. But is their a quicker way to
fix?

Re: [Bes-admins] BES 5 vs BES Express with BIS

BES does not support BIS accounts. The only interaction BES has with BIS
accounts is that a BES can block access to BIS. If a
BlackBerry smartphone is BES provisioned and the BES Admin does not block
access to BIS a user on BES/BES Express can successfully
use BIS.

If you don't need the security / manageability and sync options I'd guess not.
. unless of course you're going to BES Express which
will still give you 95% of everything you'd get with full BES.

to share their password with another party. No matter how reputable the

Yes:
http://www.port3101.org/featured-blackberry-kb-articles/793-kb03735-firewall-connection-requirements-blackberry-enterprise-server.ht
ml.

Keep in mind that all you have to do is explicitly deny port 80/443 to these IP
addresses to block access to OWA. Also, keep in
mind that with BES you're making an outbound-initiated connection and the RIM
NOC never initiates a connection inbound . and even at
that you only need TCP port 3101 open to these IPs.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Bes-admins] Prevent personal Blackberries from accessing company email

2010-07-20 Thread hdawg
Sigh.

You don't need to outright block all inbound access to those IP addresses; just
port 80 and 443 . or whatever ports you have IIS
serving OWA running on. That said, you could also block all inbound/outbound
traffic to those IPs with the exception of TCP port
3101 outbound initiated. Remember, the NOC doesn't make any inbound
connections; the BES makes a connection to the NOC, holds that
session open and all the data flows through it. Much in the same way that when
you make a VPN connection you establish a direct
connection with an endpoint. You initiate the connection and provide some form
of credential to authenticate . BES does the same
thing with the SRP Key and Auth Id.

That SRP connection always stays open . if it closes / drops communication
between the BES and HHs stop.

HDawg,

Your post shows these addresses as the BIS servers:

BIS IP Range

206.51.26.0/24

193.109.81.0/24

204.187.87.0/24

206.53.144.0/20

216.9.240.0/20

67.233.64.0/19

93.186.16.0/20

68.171.224.0/19

Another post on your site
http://www.port3101.org/featured-blackberry-kb-articles/793-kb03735-firewall-connection-requirements-blackberry-enterprise-server.ht
ml shows the same IP range for BES:

BES IP Range

206.51.26.0 /24

193.109.81.0/24

204.187.87.0/24

216.9.240.0/20

206.53.144.0/20

67.223.64.0/19

93.186.16.0/20

68.171.224.0/19

Which means that I can't block those IP's or BES stops working as well.

Back to the drawing board.

BIS uses IMAP and POP3. Are you sure it's turned off?

Other options include offline sync using Desktop manager or a 3rd-party EAS
bridge like AstraSync.

I just found out that we have people with personal Blackberries accessing their
company email, they are definitely not set up on my
BES, so I'm guessing they must be using BIS. How can I prevent them from
accessing their company email on their personal devices?
I know it's not via IMAP or POP3, we have that turned off at the Exchange level.

Thanks!

people don't take the time to read through it. It gives

I wish there was a consolidated resource that accounted for the various
iterations/possibilities that need to be
considered/configured to prevent unauthorized third party access to BES (be it

beast?

Food for thought...

Displaced and/or rogue information on an unmanaged device is a disaster waiting

The ONLY way is by users' hardcoding username/password combos on BBs. This is
a complete security meltdown. My CIO is melting in
his chair now while hearing the words in this thread.

It basically comes down to policy. Not only is it a security issue for
corporate data and such, you also can't control the password
lockout on personal devices (not connected to the BES). No Corporate policy on
the BB, no BB access. That's the credo we are
forced to enforce!

We went through this about two years ago when people started configuring OWA on
their iPhones. Now we have to start blocking GMAILs
Google Calendar as people have figured out that they can access their calendar
on their iPhones by configuring Google Calendar and
forwarding. The security implications are so frustrating!

It's policy that no personal handheld devices can access email.

In principle I agree with you on why not BB OWA if PC OWA is OK, but I still
get to enforce the policy.

So that takes care of the actual mail delivery issue but there is a lurking
issue with BIS access. That issue is users giving (or
being comfortable with giving) their credentials to another company. Maybe we
are just a little too paranoid over here? That is
what I think most institutions are getting at when they decide to block BIS
access. Don't get me wrong, its important to block new
data from getting out onto a phone with no device management or policy

2010-07-21 Thread hdawg
Has anyone turned on reconciliation for permanently deleted email messages on
BES 5? We have a few users that want it turned on.

Ø Yes, have been so for years.

My only concern is the mention of recurring message scans being used to detect
these permanently deleted messages.

Ø Don’t be concerned

Will it slow down mail delivery?

Ø Not noticeably

Reconciliation?

Ø Nope

Anything else to be aware of?

Ø Notify your users before you make this change and understand the limitations
of it. The biggest problem with implementing hard
deletes is the administrators don’t understand the limitations of it and don’t
effectively communicate to the end users.

http://www.port3101.org/featured-blackberry-kb-articles/1225-kb04853-how-enable-hard-deletes-blackberry-enterprise-server.html

The support for hard deletes uses a Message State Database stored in the
computer memory. This database is enabled by default even
if the Hard Deletes Reconciliation feature is disabled. By default, the last
100 email messages are tracked for hard delete support
in the Message State Database however this number can be changed.
The Message State Database may be reset so that email messages redirected to a
BlackBerry smartphone during a previous BlackBerry
Enterprise Server session will not be deleted, even if they are hard deleted in
the BlackBerry smartphone user's mailbox. Any of the
following actions will reset the Message State Database:

* Either of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Professional
Software are restarted.
* The BlackBerry smartphone user is moved to another BlackBerry
Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Professional Software.
* The BlackBerry smartphone user's mailbox is moved to another Microsoft®

Users can delete email messages permanently in Microsoft® Outlook®. You can
configure a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server to remove
permanently deleted messages from BlackBerry devices. If you turn on hard
deletes reconciliation, the BlackBerry Messaging Agent
also deletes email messages from BlackBerry devices when users archive or move
email messages to personal folders in Microsoft

messages, the BlackBerry Messaging Agent uses recurring
message scans to detect permanently deleted email messages on the messaging
server, and then deletes the email messages from
BlackBerry devices.

1. In the BlackBerry Administration Service, on the Servers and components
menu, expand BlackBerry Solution topology >
BlackBerry Domain > Component view > Email.
2. Click the instance that you want to change.
3. Click Edit instance.
4. On the Messaging tab, in the Messaging options section, in the Hard

5. Click Save all.
6. On the computer that hosts the BlackBerry Dispatcher, restart the
BlackBerry Dispatcher.

For those keeping track, this particular issue prevented activation of all
users on the system, existing unactivated and new users.

Deleting/recreating did not help, no errors in event logs or anything
particularly useful in the BES server logs. Same for
restarting BES services on server. The users on the server saw no problems with
any service at all the entire time, ie, everything
else was working fine.

Miraculously, a full server reboot and (probably more importantly) a RAM
increase resulted in multiple successful activations! The
server was almost out of RAM, but I have never seen that affect an activation
before.

Anyone else seen that as a solution before? Thanks!

In my original post I specified that we wanted to put our policy on the device

bbsak) after the host has activated and push the initial default policy. They
do not resend the policy on schedule after the initial
activation. Please see my original post.

Ah, ok, both. Well, once the device is bound to the BES it is "owned" by that
bes. New policies, new encryption keys, etc. Once
the device hits the hosted BES those devices will receive whatever is assigned
from that BES, overwriting yours. (It sounds like
you will probably get a blank DEFAULT policy, but that's just a guess.) You
always push something for a policy, even if it is only
the Default.

How does policy affect encryption? As I understand it, encryption just has to
do with messaging services and policy is how
corporate/IT policies are applied.

Basically I'm looking for a way to do the reverse or removing the policy. I had
an idea, the same way we can install a blank policy
by changing a registry setting for desktop manager (or maybe it's for BES, I
don't recall) and then sync a policy.bin file. In
theory this should work with an exported policy file.

In 5.0 it would be an unknown app policy.

In 4.1.x unknown app policy doesn't exist, but you simply define the first line
in a software config as having an app control policy
set to disallow and then set each app you want in the software config to either
optional or required and it'll be allowed nthe
device.

First, do this:

Now regardless of when you activate ... it'll prepopulate ... turn it off if

Second, reactivate the device. If you want to wipe ... sure I guess ... but

1. Mails: bes does not push old mails if the same bb device(pin) is activating

1a: does he have mails in inbox and sent that can be pushed? If everything is

2. Every ea pushes some old(1,5 month) and all new.

I would sent a wipe command to his bb(to remove the pin/device from the

The procedure I outlined works and works quite well. It is the recommended

remove applications from people's devices and required each user to reinstall

We installed a new firewall this morning, and BES mail push stopped. Looks
like BES is communicating with Exchange, but not with
the outside world. I'm told port 3101 is open, but can't confirm at this
point. Is there a log I can look at which might provide

Hello all,

I am trying to help out a person at our work who no longer has an active
BlackBerry with our Company. We do want to wipe her old
BlackBerry (personally owned, not Company owned), however she has some personal
text messages on the device that she needs to '.keep
on the phone and in tact.' Some personal reason, I did not divulge. Anyways,
is there a best method to ensure that our Company
information isn't on the device, while maintaining the integrity of her instant

We had an e-mail get through that was a phishing attempt against Fidelity.
We're looking at running scripts to remove it from
mailboxes, but it will not be in deleted items. Would hard delete
reconciliation remove this from devices?

If not, what is the best way to accomplish this (other than asking users to
delete it themselves.)

Re: [Bes-admins] Windows Mobile - Off Topic Question

2010-09-16 Thread hdawg
You don't need the IIS logs, you can use the following vbscript to hit the
exchange mailbox servers which'll identify the devices
and last sync time and dump it into a pretty htm file.

http://gsexdev.blogspot.com/2006/09/enumerating-devices-registered-via.html

only downside is you need to run it against mailbox server . but its going to
pull all partnership data for you so you'll get a
complete list, instead of what just gets picked up in the iis logs.

Guys,

I know this is not Blackberry related and completely off topic. So if you want

I need to find a way to identify Windows Mobile 5.X devices in the IIS Logs for
Exchange 2003. We are beginning to deploy Exchange
2007 in production and apparently Windows Mobile 5.X devices can't take
advantage off all the new policy settings, so we need to
assign these users a separate Exchange policy. I have some scripts that use
logparser to extract Device type from the IIS logs but
it doesn't identify this: MSFT-PPC/5.1.xxx or MSFT-SPhone/5.1.xxx type which is
what I need to find.

Scratching my head on this one. Try posting on a MS forum but nobody responded.
Maybe I picked the wrong one. I picked an
Activesynch forum.

They are not; just certain ones.

The installation manual tells you what needs to be in place.

Re: [Bes-admins] Patch for IE 6 for BAS

I would ask whomever told you that where to get it . because that doesn't
appear to be the case:
http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB23494

That said, IE6 IS compatible . just that it can become "very slow or
unresponsive".

Perhaps use Firefox portable or something like that.

Everyone, I was told that there is a patch that can be applied to Internet
Explorer 6 so that it is compatible with the BES 5.02 and
above. Is anyone familiar with the name of this patch and how to find it? My
understanding is IE6 natively in incompatible.

Check the your SQL tables for incompatible version types. Old versions of the

installed if it is in the user sql entry in the sync device mgmt table I

Forget 64 bit, it won't install on 2008 period. Personally, I think you need to
look into BES Express, you don't need to buy
licenses for that. It's a replacement for BPS, but also gets you up to the 5.x

another slick tool is process eplorer either 64 or 32 bit flavors (depends on

This is the official order, though I have seen
documents even from RIM that have a different order.
I've never seen anything bad happen if it's done in the wrong order, just some
extra errors in the event log, but BES seems to throw
warnings out just as normal business so I never really was concerned about it.
Besides, the services by default aren't set with
dependencies, so there's no real order to the start when the server is rebooted.

Anyone that says that they can support iPhones with the same "level of care" as
BES is lying. . unless their "level of care" of BES

Not to be a BES fanboi; but we're talking apples and oranges here . not even in
the same game.

We have the same issue here. There are some third party companies that say
they can support iPhones with the same level of care as
BES but I have yet to actually get one to work. We purchased a solution but it
was very difficult to install and we still don't
have the results we were promised.

Re: [Bes-admins] Blackberry vs Iphone

2011-02-28 Thread hdawg
The APIs supported with iOS4 are good. They're not great, but they're good and
present a compelling case in a lot of scenarios.

FIPS 140?

HIPPA compliant?

Cause me to not toss and turn every once in a while at night?

Yeah not so much.

My take is you need to look at your industry, your requirements, and then talk
to others in the same boat. Look at your BB policy .
look at your laptop policy (think of all the things you can do on your laptop
that you can/can't do on your iPhone/BB . yet such
little restrictions sometimes).

Also, talk to the vendors in the space (disclaimer: I work for one). A lot of
time is spent discussing what options are out there
and I never walk away from a discussion about what is happening in the market.
Sure I want to sell my wares, but sharing what I've
learned with customers (I feel) is some of the most valuable information .
hopefully we all learn something and you don't think of
me as typical vendor scum.

Apple will continue to improve upon what is in place (keep in mind how big and
successful the consumer space is for Apple) and
vendors will support the new technology. We'll see the same thing from
Google/Android, MS/Nokia/Win Phone 7, HP/WebOS, etc.

Just keep in mind the big picture here: it isn't about locking down a device
and securing it . it's about making end users
productive and providing a higher quality of service to those users. Yes,
security is a part of it . but why are we giving people
these devices / supporting them anyway?

And now I'll step off my soapbox and look out the window of the train as I head
back to my office.

I agree and I carry a iPhone for the fun apps and Pandora and I do all my
serious work on my Bold. Unfortunately the execs of the
world see the glitz and glamour of the iPhone and they have the IT people
scrambling to find a way to secure it to their standards.
To my knowledge the hooks into iOS4 just can't handle that kind of security yet.
